Abstract
Lead-free molecular ferroelectrics have garnered considerable attention for their promising potential, but such species with narrow band gap and sensitive photoelectric response are yet inadequate. Herein, we demonstrated the bulk ferroelectric photovoltaic effect in a novel lead-free molecular ferroelectric [C4N2H14][BiI5] with a Curie temperature (Tc) of 366 K and a narrow band gap (Eg) of 1.92 eV. The transformation of the crystal structure from the polar space group P21 to the nonpolar space group P21/m was elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Room-temperature (RT) hysteresis loop reveals the intrinsic ferroelectricity of [C4N2H14][BiI5] with a relative small coercive field (Ec ∼ 0.27 kV/cm), saturation polarization (Ps ∼ 1.87 μC/cm2), and remanent polarization (Pr ∼ 1.61 μC/cm2). [C4N2H14][BiI5]-based solar device exhibits significant PV effects with a steady-state photocurrent (Jsc) of 3.54 μA/cm2 and a photovoltage (Voc) of 0.34 V under AM 1.5 G illumination, which can be significantly improved by adjusting the ferroelectric polarization, reaching a maximum Jsc of 140 μA/cm2 and Voc of 0.51 V. This work offers a promising avenue for lead-free molecular ferroelectric materials in the field of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
A one dimensional (1D) perovskite-type (C6H7NBr)3[CdBr5] (abbreviated 4-BAPC) was synthesized by slow evaporation at room temperature (RT). 4-BAPC crystalizes in the monoclinic system with the space group P21/c. The 1D inorganic chains are formed by corner sharing CdBr6 octahedra. Thermal measurement shows that 4-BAPC is stable up to 190 °C. Optical characterization demonstrates that the grown crystal is an indirect bandgap material with a bandgap value of 3.93 eV, which is consistent with theoretical calculations. The electronic structure, calculated using density functional theory, reveals that the valence band originates from a combination of Br-4p orbitals and Cd-4d orbitals, whereas the conduction band originates from the Cd-5s orbitals. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows that the obtained material exhibits a broad-band white light emission with extra-high CRI of 98 under λ exc = 380 nm. This emission is mainly resulting from the self-trapped exciton recombinations within the inorganic CdBr6 octahedron, and the fluorescence within the organic conjugated ammonium salt.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites are recently emerging as a potential family of semiconductors for versatile optoelectronic applications. Currently, the "perovskitizer" moieties are rigidly limited to small-size cations, while few 2D metal-halides containing guanidinium cations inside perovskite cages have been studied for photodetection. Herein, we present a new 2D hybrid perovskite, (i-BA)2 (G)Pb2 I7 (where G is guanidinium and i-BA is isobutylammonium), which adopts a bilayered framework of {GPb2 I7 }. Single-crystal structure analyses disclose that G cations act as the perovskitizer, confined in the flexible perovskite cages formed by the distorted PbI6 octahedra. Such inorganic sheets are crucial to the superior semiconducting properties and optical bandgap, as verified by the density functional theory calculation. Furthermore, its planar crystal-array photodetector shows fascinating photoelectric performance, including a quite low dark current (∼4.6×10-11 A), a large current switching ratio (∼1.0×103 ), and a notable photo-responsivity of ∼0.72 A W-1 , suggesting great potential of (i-BA)2 (G)Pb2 I7 for photodetection.

Abstract
Two-dimensional hybrid halide perovskites with single chiral and ferroelectricity together with various structural phase transitions provide the possibility for more diverse functional properties. Here, we present a 2D chiral hybrid halide perovskite ferroelectric, [C6 H5 (CH2 )4 NH3 ]2 CdCl4 (4PBA-CdCl4 , 4PBA=4-phenylbutylamine) that experiences two continuous phase transitions from centrosymmetric triclinic P 1 ‾ to polar chiral monoclinic P2 and then to another centrosymmetric tetragonal P4/mmm with increasing temperature, accompanied by symmetry breaking, due to the prominent octahedral distortion and disorder transformation of organic 4PBA cations. In the polar chiral phase, 4PBA-CdCl4 gives a significant CD signal and has a moderate ferroelectric polarization of 0.35 μC/cm2 . In addition, 4PBA-CdCl4 occupies a wide band gap of 4.376 eV that is chiefly contributed by the inorganic CdCl6 octahedron. This finding offers an alternative pathway for designing new phase transitions and related physical properties in hybrid halide perovskites and other hybrid crystals.

Abstract
Low-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) possess more localized electronic states and narrower conduction and valence bands to promote self-trapping of excitons and stronger exciton emission; therefore, they are widely used as building blocks for various applications in the fields of optoelectronics, photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, luminescence, fluorescence, and so forth. Despite the past decades of intensive study, the discovered low-dimensional chiral HOIPs are rare as of the 1D chiral HOIP single crystals reported in 2003, as well as the low-dimensional chiral HOIP ferroelectrics are particularly scarce since the first chiral two-dimensional (2D) and/or one-dimensional (1D) HOIP ferroelectrics reported. Herein, two new low-dimensional HOIPs with the same conformational formula [R-MPA]2CdCl4 (R-MPA+ = (R)-(-)-1-methyl-3-phenylpropylamine) were successfully synthetized by means of regulating the stoichiometric proportion of R-MPA and CdCl2 in two ways of 1:1 (1) and 2:1 (2). By combining single-crystal X-ray diffraction, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, temperature-dependent dielectric constant, temperature-dependent second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect, polarization-dependent SHG response, and P-E hysteresis loop, we reveal that 1 is a 1D nonchiral molecular ferroelectric and 2 is the first zero-dimensional (0D) chiral ferroelectric with distinct CD signals; meanwhile, 2 exhibits increased properties of high-Tc, large dielectric constant, SHG isotropy, and ferroelectricity than that of 1. These results not only shed light on the high tunability of the low-dimensional HOIP ferroelectrics but also open up an avenue to explore multifunctional chiral ferroelectrics.

Abstract
The optical properties of metal-organic frameworks [M2(bdc)2(dabco)] (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) in the wavelength region of 300-1000 nm were studied, and the electronic band-to-band transitions were determined and characterized by the Kubelka-Munk approach and DFT calculations. Urbach edges for band-to-band transitions were determined. The effect of spin-phonon interactions on the width of Urbach edges in paramagnetic [M2(bdc)2(dabco)] is discussed. The obtained data may be useful to interpret polymerization, hybridization, and catalytic reactions in [M2(bdc)2(dabco)] pores and to design electronic and optical devices.

Absorption and Remission Characterization of Pure, Dielectric (Nano-)Powders Using Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy: An End-To-End Instruction. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2019. Abstract
This paper addresses the challenging task of optical characterization of pure, dielectric (nano-)powders with the aim to provide an end-to-end instruction from appropriate sample preparation up to the determination of material remission and absorption spectra. We succeeded in establishing an innovative preparation procedure to reproducibly obtain powder pellet samples with an ideal Lambertian scattering behavior. As a result, a procedure based on diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was developed that allows for (i) performing reproducible and artifact-free, high-quality measurements as well as (ii) a thorough optical analysis using Monte Carlo and Mie scattering simulations yielding the absorption spectrum in the visible spectral range. The procedure is valid for the particular case of powders that can be compressed into thick, non-translucent pellets and neither requires embedding of the dielectric (nano-)powders within an appropriate host matrix for measurements nor the use of integrating spheres. The reduced spectroscopic procedure minimizes the large number of sources for errors, enables an in-depth understanding of non-avoidable artifacts and is of particular advantage in the field of material sciences, i.e., for getting first insights to the optical features of a newly synthesized, pure dielectric powder, but also as an inline inspection tool for massively parallelised material characterization.

Abstract
In this article, two two-dimensional and three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks are synthesized by the self-assembly of copper(I) halide and the hexamethylenetetramine (hmt) ligand. Compound 1 is a two-dimensional metal-organic framework composed of a pyramidal Cu4I5 cluster and hexamethylenetetramine, in which hmt-bridged Cu clusters form a two-dimensional (4,4)-connected net with a point symbol of (44·62) (44·62). Compound 2 is a homochiral three-dimensional metal-organic framework material generated through an unusual spontaneous crystallization from achiral precursors. The two compounds were characterized by a series of analyses such as infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Both of them exhibit unexpected stability under a wide range of conditions of acid and base. In addition, the fluorescence intensity changes regularly under acid-base conditions. Stokes shift shows a good linear relationship with -log [H+], which makes them become promising acid-base sensors. Compounds 1 and 2 also display selective adsorption and a significant degradation effect on the organic dye methylene blue. In addition, the fluorescence study indicated that compound 2 could be used as a sensor to detect Cr3+.

Abstract
The lanthanide(III) chloride oxidomolybdates(VI) with the empirical formula Ln3Cl3[MoO6] (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd) were synthesized by solid-state reactions utilizing the respective lanthanide trichloride, lanthanide sesquioxide (where available), and molybdenum trioxide together with lithium chloride as a fluxing agent. The title compounds crystallize in hexagonal space group P63/ m ( a = 942-926 pm, c = 542-533 pm, Z = 2). Besides tetracapped trigonal prismatically coordinated Ln3+ cations, noncondensed trigonal prismatic [MoO6]6- entities are found in the crystal structure. In addition to X-ray diffraction, the title compounds were also characterized by single-crystal Raman and infrared spectroscopy as well as measurements to determine their magnetic susceptibility and behavior at low temperatures. The most outstanding properties of the Ln3Cl3[MoO6] representatives (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd), however, are of an optical nature, because their band gaps, determined by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, show a significant shift toward lower energies compared to those of other rare-earth metal chloride molybdates with a different polyhedral arrangement. This culminates in La3Cl3[MoO6]:Eu3+ exhibiting luminescence, which can be excited in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum by a blue light-emitting diode.

Abstract
[C6N2H18][SbI5] (1), a novel metal halide semiconductor with dielectric relaxation behavior, has been successfully synthesized, in which the cavities between the one-dimensional [SbI5] n2- polyanions are occupied by 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediammonium (2-MPDA) cations. 1 undergoes a reversible solid-state phase transition at TC = 192.7 K and shows a step-like dielectric anomaly. Interestingly, above TC, distinct dielectric dispersion in a wide temperature range is also witnessed. Remarkably, the solid state UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of 1 exhibits a slightly gentler absorption edge at about 650 nm; that is, 1 adopts an indirect band gap with 1.92 electron volts. The combined narrow band gap, strong photoconductivity effect, and excellent dielectric relaxation might shed light on the exploitation of lead-free hybrid metal halide molecular materials with promising application prospects in thermoresponsive relaxation-type dielectric materials and photovoltaic conversion devices.

Abstract
Haloplumbate-based perovskites display promising functionalities for advanced photovoltaic, optoelectronic and other applications with high performances and low costs. Herein, we present a study of variable-temperature crystal structures, dielectrics and conductance at 153-513 K, and luminescence at ambient temperature for a one-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskite, [N-methyldabconium]PbI3 (1). Hybrid 1 shows extra thermo- and water-stability (thermal decomposition at ca. 653 K), switchable dielectric behaviour and conductance at around 348 K, owing to symmetry-breaking structure phase transition from the hexagonal space group P63/mmc in the high-temperature phase to the orthogonal space group Pcba in the low-temperature phase, and bright yellow-green emission at room temperature, originating from the electron transition within the semiconducting {PbI3}∞ chains. This study will broaden the scope of lead halide-based hybrid materials for practical application in optical and electrical devices.

Abstract
The unusual Au3+ ternary halide AuPb2I7 has been isolated from reactions of AuI, PbI2, and I2. AuPb2I7 crystallizes in the triclinic P1̅ space group as micron-scale needles with cell dimensions a = 4.5170(3) Å, b = 7.3847(4) Å, c = 12.2970(7) Å, α = 76.374(4)°, β = 83.711(4)°, γ = 72.987(3)° at room temperature with ρ = 6.538 g/cm3 and has no structural phase transition down to 100 K. The title compound has a unique three-dimensional structure composed of [Pb2I7]3- pseudolayers extending in [010] bridged by square planar Au3+ at an oblique angle in the [001] direction. The pseudolayers are composed of 1/∞[Pb2I2]2+ chains propagating down [100] linked by square planar I- ions through [010]. AuPb2I7 has a bandgap of 1.17 eV and is stable in air for several days, before degrading to PbI2, Au0, and I2. Density functional theory calculations show that AuPb2I7 is an indirect bandgap semiconductor where the bandgap stems predominantly from Au-I metal-ligand charge transfer.

Abstract
N-Salicilideneanilines are among the most studied thermo- and photochromic systems in the solid state. Although thermochromism is a general property of crystalline N-salicilideneanilines, photochromism is known in a limited number of cases. As a method for the construction of thermo- and photo-responsive molecular architectures, the co-crystallisation of 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene (I2F4) with three selected imines of o-vanillin, named 1, 2 and 3, obtained through a condensation reaction with 3-aminopyridine, 4-bromoaniline and 4-iodoaniline, respectively, is reported herein. All crystals and co-crystals have been characterised by means of solid-state complementary techniques (X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, absorption and emission spectroscopy). The role of halogen bonding and crystal packing in the optical and chromic properties of all solid materials is discussed. All solids exhibit thermochromic behaviour, and three of them (2, 22 ⋅I2F4 and 32 ⋅I2F4) are also photochromic. Imine derivative 3 crystallises in two different polymorphic forms (3 A and 3 B) and a solvate (3Solv ). The bromo and iodo derivatives, 2 and 3 B, are isomorphous and form isomorphous co-crystals with I2F4, but behave differently when exposed to UV light because only crystalline 2 is photochromic. Interestingly, the replacement of bromine with iodine seems to turn off the photochromism because crystalline 3 A and 3Solv , and even the 20.7 30.3 solid solution, do not manifest photochromic behaviour.

Abstract
The present study deals with the structural characterization and classification of the novel compounds 1-8 into perovskite subclasses and proceeds in extracting the structure-band gap relationships between them. The compounds were obtained from the employment of small, 3-5-atom-wide organic ammonium ions seeking to discover new perovskite-like compounds. The compounds reported here adopt unique or rare structure types akin to the prototype structure perovskite. When trimethylammonium (TMA) was employed, we obtained TMASnI3 (1), which is our reference compound for a "perovskitoid" structure of face-sharing octahedra. The compounds EASnI3 (2b), GASnI3 (3a), ACASnI3 (4), and IMSnI3 (5) obtained from the use of ethylammonium (EA), guanidinium (GA), acetamidinium (ACA), and imidazolium (IM) cations, respectively, represent the first entries of the so-called "hexagonal perovskite polytypes" in the hybrid halide perovskite library. The hexagonal perovskites define a new family of hybrid halide perovskites with a crystal structure that emerges from a blend of corner- and face-sharing octahedral connections in various proportions. The small organic cations can also stabilize a second structural type characterized by a crystal lattice with reduced dimensionality. These compounds include the two-dimensional (2D) perovskites GA2SnI4 (3b) and IPA3Sn2I7 (6b) and the one-dimensional (1D) perovskite IPA3SnI5 (6a). The known 2D perovskite BA2MASn2I7 (7) and the related all-inorganic 1D perovskite "RbSnF2I" (8) have also been synthesized. All compounds have been identified as medium-to-wide-band-gap semiconductors in the range of Eg = 1.90-2.40 eV, with the band gap progressively decreasing with increased corner-sharing functionality and increased torsion angle in the octahedral connectivity.

Abstract
Tantalum nitride (Ta3 N5 ) highlights an intriguing paradigm for converting solar energy into chemical fuels. However, its photocatalytic properties are strongly governed by various intrinsic/extrinsic defects. In this work, we successfully prepared a series of Mg-doped mesoporous Ta3 N5 using a simple method. The photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties were investigated from the viewpoint of how defects such as accumulation of oxygen and nitrogen vacancies contribute to the catalytic activity. Our findings suggest that Mg doping is accompanied by an accumulation of oxygen species and a simultaneous elimination of nitrogen vacancies in Ta3 N5 . These oxygen species in Ta3 N5 induce delocalized shallow donor states near the conduction band minimum and are responsible for high electron mobility. The superior photocatalytic activity of Mg-doped Ta3 N5 can then be understood by the improved electron-hole separation as well as the lack of nitrogen vacancies, which often serve as charge-recombination centers.

Abstract
Semiconducting ferroelectricity is realized in hybrid perovskite-type compounds (cyclohexylammonium)2 PbBr4-4 x I4 x (x = 0-1). By adjusting the composition x, the bandgap is successfully tuned from previously reported 3.65 eV to as low as 2.74 eV, and the excellent ferroelectricity was kept intact. This finding may contribute to improving the photoelectronic and/or photovoltaic performance of hybrid perovskite-type compounds.

Inorganic semiconductor ferroelectrics such as BiFeO3 have shown great potential in photovoltaic and other applications. Currently, semiconducting properties and the corresponding application in optoelectronic devices of hybrid organo-plumbate or stannate are a hot topic of academic research; more and more of such hybrids have been synthesized. Structurally, these hybrids are suitable for exploration of ferroelectricity. Therefore, the design of molecular ferroelectric semiconductors based on these hybrids provides a possibility to obtain new or high-performance semiconductor ferroelectrics. Here we investigated Pb-layered perovskites, and found the layer perovskite (benzylammonium)2PbCl4 is ferroelectric with semiconducting behaviours. It has a larger ferroelectric spontaneous polarization Ps=13 μC cm−2 and a higher Curie temperature Tc=438 K with a band gap of 3.65 eV. This finding throws light on the new properties of the hybrid organo-plumbate or stannate compounds and provides a new way to develop new semiconductor ferroelectrics. Lead-halide perovskite compounds have seen a considerable interest for their optoelectronic properties. Here, the authors discover a ferroelectric halide perovskite compound as an alternative pathway towards designing semiconductor ferroelectrics.

Abstract
The synthesis and properties of the hybrid organic/inorganic germanium perovskite compounds, AGeI3, are reported (A = Cs, organic cation). The systematic study of this reaction system led to the isolation of 6 new hybrid semiconductors. Using CsGeI3 (1) as the prototype compound, we have prepared methylammonium, CH3NH3GeI3 (2), formamidinium, HC(NH2)2GeI3 (3), acetamidinium, CH3C(NH2)2GeI3 (4), guanidinium, C(NH2)3GeI3 (5), trimethylammonium, (CH3)3NHGeI3 (6), and isopropylammonium, (CH3)2C(H)NH3GeI3 (7) analogues. The crystal structures of the compounds are classified based on their dimensionality with 1–4 forming 3D perovskite frameworks and 5–7 1D infinite chains. Compounds 1–7, with the exception of compounds 5 (centrosymmetric) and 7 (nonpolar acentric), crystallize in polar space groups. The 3D compounds have direct band gaps of 1.6 eV (1), 1.9 eV (2), 2.2 eV (3), and 2.5 eV (4), while the 1D compounds have indirect band gaps of 2.7 eV (5), 2.5 eV (6), and 2.8 eV (7). Herein, we report on the second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of the compounds, which display remarkably strong, type I phase-matchable SHG response with high laser-induced damage thresholds (up to ∼3 GW/cm(2)). The second-order nonlinear susceptibility, χS(2), was determined to be 125.3 ± 10.5 pm/V (1), (161.0 ± 14.5) pm/V (2), 143.0 ± 13.5 pm/V (3), and 57.2 ± 5.5 pm/V (4). First-principles density functional theory electronic structure calculations indicate that the large SHG response is attributed to the high density of states in the valence band due to sp-hybridization of the Ge and I orbitals, a consequence of the lone pair activation.
