Triamidoamine–Uranium(IV)‐Stabilized Terminal Parent Phosphide and Phosphinidene Complexes

Frustrated Lewis Pair Adduct of Atomic P(-1) as a Source of Phosphinidenes (PR), Diphosphorus (P2 ), and Indium Phosphide

We report phosphinidenes (PR) stabilized by an intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chelate. These adducts include the parent phosphinidene, PH, which is accessed via thermolysis of coordinated HPCO. The reported FLP-PH species acts as a springboard to other phosphorus-containing compounds, such as FLP-adducts of diphosphorus (P₂ ) and InP₃ . Our new adducts participate in thermal- or light-induced phosphinidene elimination (of both PH and PR, R=organic group), transfer P₂ units to an organic substrate, and yield the useful semiconductor InP at only 110 °C from solution.

Uranium(IV) Thio- and Selenoether Complexes: Syntheses, Structures, and Computational Investigation of U-ER2 Interactions

Rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing pincer proligands H[AS₂ Ph 2 ] (1) and H[ASe₂ Ph 2 ] (2) were synthesized, and deprotonation provided the potassium salts [K(AS₂ Ph 2 )(dme)] (3) and [K(ASe₂ Ph 2 )(dme)₂ ] (4). Reaction of two equivalents of 3 or 4 with [UI₄ (dioxane)₂ ] afforded the uranium thioether complex [(AS₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (5) and the first example of a uranium-selenoether complex, [(ASe₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (6). X-ray structures revealed distorted square antiprismatic geometries in which the AE₂ Ph 2 ligands are κ³ -coordinated. The nature of the U-ER₂ bonding in 5 and 6, as well as methyl-free analogues of 5 and 6 and a hypothetical ether analogue, was investigated computationally (including NBO, AIM, and ELF calculations) illustrating increasing covalency from O to S to Se.

Experimental and Computational Studies on a Base-Free Terminal Uranium Phosphinidene Metallocene

The first stable base‐free terminal uranium phosphinidene metallocene is presented; and its structure and reactivity have been studied in detail and compared to that of the corresponding thorium derivative. Salt metathesis reaction of the methyl iodide uranium metallocene Cp’’’₂U(I)Me (2, Cp’’’=η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂) with Mes*PHK (Mes*=2,4,6‐(Me₃C)₃C₆H₂) in THF yields the base‐free terminal uranium phosphinidene metallocene, Cp’’’₂U=PMes* (3). In addition, density functional theory (DFT) studies suggest substantial 5f orbital contributions to the bonding within the uranium phosphinidene [U]=PAr moiety, which results in a more covalent bonding between the [Cp’’’₂U]²⁺ and [Mes*P]²⁻ fragments than that for the related thorium derivative. This difference in bonding besides steric reasons causes different reactivity patterns for both molecules. Therefore, the uranium derivative 3 may act as a Cp’’’₂U(II) synthon releasing the phosphinidene moiety (Mes*P:) when treated with alkynes or a variety of hetero‐unsaturated molecules such as imines, thiazoles, ketazines, bipy, organic azides, diazene derivatives, ketones, and carbodiimides.

Trapping of a Highly Bent and Reduced Form of 2-Phosphaethynolate in a Mixed-Valence Diuranium-Triamidoamine Complex

The chemistry of 2-phosphaethynolate is burgeoning, but there remains much to learn about this ligand, for example its reduction chemistry is scarce as this promotes P-C-O fragmentations or couplings. Here, we report that reduction of [U(Tren^TIPS )(OCP)] (Tren^TIPS =N(CH₂ CH₂ NSiPrⁱ ₃ )₃ ) with KC₈ /2,2,2-cryptand gives [{U(Tren^TIPS )}₂ {μ-η² (OP):η² (CP)-OCP}][K(2,2,2-cryptand)]. The coordination mode of this trapped 2-phosphaethynolate is unique, and derives from an unprecedented highly reduced and highly bent form of this ligand with the most acute P-C-O angle in any complex to date (P-C-O ∡ ≈127°). The characterisation data support a mixed-valence diuranium(III/IV) formulation, where backbonding from uranium gives a highly reduced form of the P-C-O unit that is perhaps best described as a uranium-stabilised OCP^2-. radical dianion. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that this gives unprecedented carbene character to the P-C-O unit, which engages in a weak donor-acceptor interaction with one of the uranium ions.

Silyl-Phosphino-Carbene Complexes of Uranium(IV)

Unprecedented silyl-phosphino-carbene complexes of uranium(IV) are presented, where before all covalent actinide-carbon double bonds were stabilised by phosphorus(V) substituents or restricted to matrix isolation experiments. Conversion of [U(BIPMTMS )(Cl)(μ-Cl)2 Li(THF)2 ] (1, BIPMTMS =C(PPh2 NSiMe3 )2 ) into [U(BIPMTMS )(Cl){CH(Ph)(SiMe3 )}] (2), and addition of [Li{CH(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}(THF)]/Me2 NCH2 CH2 NMe2 (TMEDA) gave [U{C(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}(BIPMTMS )(μ-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(μ-TMEDA)0.5 ]2 (3) by α-hydrogen abstraction. Addition of 2,2,2-cryptand or two equivalents of 4-N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) to 3 gave [U{C(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}(BIPMTMS )(Cl)][Li(2,2,2-cryptand)] (4) or [U{C(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}(BIPMTMS )(DMAP)2 ] (5). The characterisation data for 3-5 suggest that whilst there is evidence for 3-centre P-C-U π-bonding character, the U=C double bond component is dominant in each case. These U=C bonds are the closest to a true uranium alkylidene yet outside of matrix isolation experiments.

Actinide-Pnictide (An-Pn) Bonds Spanning Non-Metal, Metalloid, and Metal Combinations (An=U, Th; Pn=P, As, Sb, Bi)

The synthesis and characterisation is presented of the compounds [An(TrenDMBS ){Pn(SiMe3 )2 }] and [An(TrenTIPS ){Pn(SiMe3 )2 }] [TrenDMBS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiMe2 But )3 , An=U, Pn=P, As, Sb, Bi; An=Th, Pn=P, As; TrenTIPS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiPri3 )3 , An=U, Pn=P, As, Sb; An=Th, Pn=P, As, Sb]. The U-Sb and Th-Sb moieties are unprecedented examples of any kind of An-Sb molecular bond, and the U-Bi bond is the first two-centre-two-electron (2c-2e) one. The Th-Bi combination was too unstable to isolate, underscoring the fragility of these linkages. However, the U-Bi complex is the heaviest 2c-2e pairing of two elements involving an actinide on a macroscopic scale under ambient conditions, and this is exceeded only by An-An pairings prepared under cryogenic matrix isolation conditions. Thermolysis and photolysis experiments suggest that the U-Pn bonds degrade by homolytic bond cleavage, whereas the more redox-robust thorium compounds engage in an acid-base/dehydrocoupling route.

Crystalline Diuranium Phosphinidiide and μ-Phosphido Complexes with Symmetric and Asymmetric UPU Cores

Reaction of [U(TrenTIPS )(PH2 )] (1, TrenTIPS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiPri3 )3 ) with C6 H5 CH2 K and [U(TrenTIPS )(THF)][BPh4 ] (2) afforded a rare diuranium parent phosphinidiide complex [{U(TrenTIPS )}2 (μ-PH)] (3). Treatment of 3 with C6 H5 CH2 K and two equivalents of benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5) gave the diuranium μ-phosphido complex [{U(TrenTIPS )}2 (μ-P)][K(B15C5)2 ] (4). Alternatively, reaction of [U(TrenTIPS )(PH)][Na(12C4)2 ] (5, 12C4=12-crown-4 ether) with [U{N(CH2 CH2 NSiMe2 But )2 CH2 CH2 NSi(Me)(CH2 )(But )}] (6) produced the diuranium μ-phosphido complex [{U(TrenTIPS )}(μ-P){U(TrenDMBS )}][Na(12C4)2 ] [7, TrenDMBS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiMe2 But )3 ]. Compounds 4 and 7 are unprecedented examples of uranium phosphido complexes outside of matrix isolation studies, and they rapidly decompose in solution underscoring the paucity of uranium phosphido complexes. Interestingly, 4 and 7 feature symmetric and asymmetric UPU cores, respectively, reflecting their differing steric profiles.

Terminal Parent Phosphanide and Phosphinidene Complexes of Zirconium(IV)

The reaction of [Zr(TrenDMBS )(Cl)] [Zr1; TrenDMBS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiMe2 But )3 ] with NaPH2 gave the terminal parent phosphanide complex [Zr(TrenDMBS )(PH2 )] [Zr2; Zr-P=2.690(2) Å]. Treatment of Zr2 with one equivalent of KCH2 C6 H5 and two equivalents of benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5) afforded an unprecedented example (outside of matrix isolation) of a structurally authenticated transition-metal terminal parent phosphinidene complex [Zr(TrenDMBS )(PH)][K(B15C5)2 ] [Zr3; Zr=P=2.472(2) Å]. DFT calculations reveal a polarized-covalent Zr=P double bond, with a Mayer bond order of 1.48, and together with IR spectroscopic data also suggest an agostic-type Zr⋅⋅⋅HP interaction [∡ZrPH =66.7°] which is unexpectedly similar to that found in cryogenic, spectroscopically observed phosphinidene species. Surprisingly, computational data suggest that the Zr=P linkage is similarly polarized, and thus as covalent, as essentially isostructural U=P and Th=P analogues.

Terminal Uranium(V/VI) Nitride Activation of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Disulfide: Factors Governing Diverse and Well-Defined Cleavage and Redox Reactions

The reactivity of terminal uranium(V/VI) nitrides with CE₂ (E=O, S) is presented. Well-defined C=E cleavage followed by zero-, one-, and two-electron redox events is observed. The uranium(V) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (1, Tren^TIPS =N(CH₂ CH₂ NSiiPr₃ )₃ ; B15C5=benzo-15-crown-5) reacts with CO₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (3), whereas the uranium(VI) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)] (2) reacts with CO₂ to give isolable [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)] (4); complex 4 rapidly decomposes to known [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)] (5) with concomitant formation of N₂ and CO proposed, with the latter trapped as a vanadocene adduct. In contrast, 1 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(κ² -CS₃ )][K(B15C5)₂ ] (6), 2, and [K(B15C5)₂ ][NCS] (7), whereas 2 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(NCS)] (8) and "S", with the latter trapped as Ph₃ PS. Calculated reaction profiles reveal outer-sphere reactivity for uranium(V) but inner-sphere mechanisms for uranium(VI); despite the wide divergence of products the initial activation of CE₂ follows mechanistically related pathways, providing insight into the factors of uranium oxidation state, chalcogen, and NCE groups that govern the subsequent divergent redox reactions that include common one-electron reactions and a less-common two-electron redox event. Caution, we suggest, is warranted when utilising CS₂ as a reactivity surrogate for CO₂ .

The HAsAsH molecule has hitherto only been proposed tentatively as a short-lived species generated in electrochemical or microwave-plasma experiments. After two centuries of inconclusive or disproven claims of HAsAsH formation in the condensed phase, we report the isolation and structural authentication of HAsAsH in the diuranium(IV) complex [{U(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-η2:η2-As2H2)] (3, TrenTIPS=N(CH2CH2NSiPri3)3; Pri=CH(CH3)2). Complex 3 was prepared by deprotonation and oxidative homocoupling of an arsenide precursor. Characterization and computational data are consistent with back-bonding-type interactions from uranium to the HAsAsH π*-orbital. This experimentally confirms the theoretically predicted excellent π-acceptor character of HAsAsH, and is tantamount to full reduction to the diarsane-1,2-diide form.

The Renaissance of Non-Aqueous Uranium Chemistry

Prior to the year 2000, non-aqueous uranium chemistry mainly involved metallocene and classical alkyl, amide, or alkoxide compounds as well as established carbene, imido, and oxo derivatives. Since then, there has been a resurgence of the area, and dramatic developments of supporting ligands and multiply bonded ligand types, small-molecule activation, and magnetism have been reported. This Review 1) introduces the reader to some of the specialist theories of the area, 2) covers all-important starting materials, 3) surveys contemporary ligand classes installed at uranium, including alkyl, aryl, arene, carbene, amide, imide, nitride, alkoxide, aryloxide, and oxo compounds, 4) describes advances in the area of single-molecule magnetism, and 5) summarizes the coordination and activation of small molecules, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, dinitrogen, white phosphorus, and alkanes.

An Inverted-Sandwich Diuranium μ-η5:η5-Cyclo-P5 Complex Supported by U-P5 δ-Bonding

Reaction of [U(TrenTIPS)] [1, TrenTIPS=N(CH2CH2NSiiPr3)3] with 0.25 equivalents of P4 reproducibly affords the unprecedented actinide inverted sandwich cyclo-P5 complex [{U(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-η5:η5-cyclo-P5)] (2). All prior examples of cyclo-P5 are stabilized by d-block metals, so 2 shows that cyclo-P5 does not require d-block ions to be prepared. Although cyclo-P5 is isolobal to cyclopentadienyl, which usually bonds to metals via σ- and π-interactions with minimal δ-bonding, theoretical calculations suggest the principal bonding in the U(P5)U unit is polarized δ-bonding. Surprisingly, the characterization data are overall consistent with charge transfer from uranium to the cyclo-P5 unit to give a cyclo-P5 charge state that approximates to a dianionic formulation. This is ascribed to the larger size and superior acceptor character of cyclo-P5 compared to cyclopentadienyl, the strongly reducing nature of uranium(III), and the availability of uranium δ-symmetry 5f orbitals.

Yttrium complexes of arsine, arsenide, and arsinidene ligands

Deprotonation of the yttrium-arsine complex [Cp'3Y{As(H)2Mes}] (1) (Cp'=η(5)-C5H4Me, Mes=mesityl) by nBuLi produces the μ-arsenide complex [{Cp'2Y[μ-As(H)Mes]}3] (2). Deprotonation of the As-H bonds in 2 by nBuLi produces [Li(thf)4]2[{Cp'2Y(μ3-AsMes)}3Li], [Li(thf)4]2[3], in which the dianion 3 contains the first example of an arsinidene ligand in rare-earth metal chemistry. The molecular structures of the arsine, arsenide, and arsinidene complexes are described, and the yttrium-arsenic bonding is analyzed by density functional theory.

Two-electron reductive carbonylation of terminal uranium(V) and uranium(VI) nitrides to cyanate by carbon monoxide

Two-electron reductive carbonylation of the uranium(VI) nitride [U(Tren(TIPS))(N)] (2, Tren(TIPS)=N(CH2CH2NSiiPr3)3) with CO gave the uranium(IV) cyanate [U(Tren(TIPS))(NCO)] (3). KC8 reduction of 3 resulted in cyanate dissociation to give [U(Tren(TIPS))] (4) and KNCO, or cyanate retention in [U(Tren(TIPS))(NCO)][K(B15C5)2] (5, B15C5=benzo-15-crown-5 ether) with B15C5. Complexes 5 and 4 and KNCO were also prepared from CO and the uranium(V) nitride [{U(Tren(TIPS))(N)K}2] (6), with or without B15C5, respectively. Complex 5 can be prepared directly from CO and [U(Tren(TIPS))(N)][K(B15C5)2] (7). Notably, 7 reacts with CO much faster than 2. This unprecedented f-block reactivity was modeled theoretically, revealing nucleophilic attack of the π* orbital of CO by the nitride with activation energy barriers of 24.7 and 11.3 kcal mol(-1) for uranium(VI) and uranium(V), respectively. A remarkably simple two-step, two-electron cycle for the conversion of azide to nitride to cyanate using 4, NaN3 and CO is presented.

The ketimide ligand is not just an inert spectator: heteroallene insertion reactivity of an actinide-ketimide linkage in a thorium carbene amide ketimide complex

The ketimide anion R2C=N(-) is an important class of chemically robust ligand that binds strongly to metal ions and is considered ideal for supporting reactive metal fragments due to its inert spectator nature; this contrasts with R2N(-) amides that exhibit a wide range of reactivities. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a rare example of an actinide ketimide complex [Th(BIPM(TMS)){N(SiMe3)2}(N=CPh2)] [2, BIPM(TMS)=C(PPh2NSiMe3)2]. Complex 2 contains Th=C(carbene), Th-N(amide) and Th-N(ketimide) linkages, thereby presenting the opportunity to probe the preferential reactivity of these linkages. Importantly, reactivity studies of 2 with unsaturated substrates shows that insertion reactions occur preferentially at the Th-N(ketimide) bond rather than at the Th=C(carbene) or Th-N(amide) bonds. This overturns the established view that metal-ketimide linkages are purely inert spectators.
