Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and application of a new cyanostyrylcopillar[5]arene 1 is reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other spectroscopic techniques confirm the identity of the new copillar 1. The X-ray diffraction study reveals that the copillar 1 exhibits a 1D supramolecular chain in the solid state involving π···π interactions along the crystallographic c-axis and 1D chains are further connected by interchain C-H···π interactions to establish 2D supramolecular layers within the crystallographic bc-plane. 2D supramolecular chains on further packing introduce a 3D structure with void spaces filled with hexane molecules. Through minimal deviation in the dihedral angle, the cyano-substituted ethylenic group in 1 shows a conjugation with the phenolic -OH, favoring intramolecular bond conjugation (ITBC) and colorimetrically detects the aliphatic amines over aromatic amines in CH3CN. Among the aliphatic amines, tertiary amines are differentiated from primary and secondary amines by the naked eye through color change. Both in solution and solid states, 1 displays vapor phase detection of volatile aliphatic amines. Antibacterial activity analysis shows that while 1 exhibits the antibiofilm action against Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, it promotes biofilm formation by Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract
A weak CH/O hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) with both rigidity and flexibility that could easily and reversibly switch from a non-crystalline to a crystalline phase was constructed. The specific solvent molecule acts as a "key" to control the crystallinity, while the highly rigid triangle macrocycle as the building block is the "lock". The introduction and removal of the "key" could influence the local flexibility of the whole framework and lead to switchable crystallinity. Furthermore, the obtained HOF exhibits excellent separation efficiency for benzene and cyclohexane (94.4 %).

Abstract
Benzene hydrogenation is an important industrial process. The reaction is incomplete, resulting in a mixture of benzene, cyclohexane, and/or cyclohexene that have to be separated before any further reactions. The currently used extractive and azeotropic distillations are operationally complex and energy intensive. Adsorptive separation provides an alternative energy-efficient method. However, the separation of the ternary mixture by adsorptive separation has not yet been reported. In the present research, we report two macrocyclic hosts with hydrogen-bonding sites in their cavities that are able to separate the ternary mixture of benzene, cyclohexene, and cyclohexane. N-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions were found to play a key role in the selective separation. In addition, fast adsorption, high loading ratios, and easy recycling are achieved with the present system, which is promising for practical applications.

Abstract
The exploitation of new materials for adsorptive separation of industrially important hydrocarbons is of great importance in both scientific research and petrochemical industry. Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) as a robust class of synthetic materials have drawn much attention during the past five years for their superior performance in adsorption and separation. Pillararenes are the main family of macrocyclic arenes used for NACs construction, where the structure-function relationship has been intensively studied. In the past two years, some emerging types of synthetic macrocyclic arenes have been successfully brought into this research field, showing the gradual enrichment and diversification of NACs materials. This Minireview summarizes the recent advances of synthetic macrocycle-based NACs, which are categorized by various practical applications in molecular separation. Besides, NACs-based vapochromic supramolecular systems are also discussed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of NACs are given. We envisage that this Minireview will be a useful and timely reference for those who are interested in new molecular and supramolecular crystals for storage and separation applications.

Abstract
Alkanes composed of C-C and C-H show a low electric polarization, and therefore, there is only very weak interaction between alkanes and adsorbents. Thus, it is difficult to separate a specific alkane from a mixture of alkanes by adsorption. Here, two activated "channel-like" crystals generated from brominated thiacalix[4]arene propyl ethers, which adopt 1,3-alternate and partial cone conformations, recognize specific alkane vapors depending on alkane-shape and -size, sorting in three-type alkane guests such as linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes. Two activated crystals, which are prepared by removal of solvent upon heating under reduced pressure, incorporate branched and/or cyclic alkane vapors by a unique "gate-opening" mechanism via a crystal transformation in the process. Linear alkane vapors do not trigger gate opening and are not taken up by the activated crystals. The shape and size molecular-recognition properties of the activated crystals promises considerable usefulness for the separation of linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes.

Abstract
Tiara[5]arenes (T[5]s), a new class of five‐fold symmetric oligophenolic macrocycles that are not accessible from the addition of formaldehyde to phenol, were synthesized for the first time. These pillar[5]arene‐derived structures display both unique conformational freedom, differing from that of pillararenes, with a rich blend of solid‐state conformations and excellent host–guest interactions in solution. Finally we show how this novel macrocyclic scaffold can be functionalized in a variety of ways and used as functional crystalline materials to distinguish uniquely between benzene and cyclohexane.

Abstract
Reported here is the highly efficient separation of industrially important cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE and trans-DCE) isomers by activated crystalline 2,2',4,4'-tetramethoxyl biphen[3]arene (MeBP3) materials, MeBP3α. MeBP3 can be synthesized in excellent yield (99 %), and a cyclic pentamer is also obtained when using 1,2-dichloroethane as the solvent. The structure of MeBP3 in the CH3 CN@MeBP3 crystal displays a triangle-shape topology, forming 1D channels through window-to-window packing. Desolvated crystalline MeBP3 materials, MeBP3α, preferentially adsorb cis-DCE vapors over its trans isomer. MeBP3α is able to separate cis-DCE from a 50:50 (v/v) cis/trans-isomer mixture, yielding cis-DCE with a purity of 96.4 % in a single adsorption cycle. Single-crystal structures and powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the uptake of cis-DCE triggers a solid-state structural transformation of MeBP3, suggesting the adaptivity of MeBP3α materials during the sorption process. Moreover, the separation can be performed over multiple cycles without loss of separation selectivity and capacity.

Host-Guest Complexation Using Pillar[5]arene Crystals: Crystal-Structure Dependent Uptake, Release, and Molecular Dynamics of an Alkane Guest. Chemistry 2019; 25:2497-2502. Abstract
Host-guest complexation has been mainly investigated in solution, and it is unclear how guest molecules access the assembled structures of host and dynamics of guest molecules in the crystal state. In this study, we studied the uptake, release, and molecular dynamics of n-hexane vapor in the crystal state of pillar[5]arenes bearing different substituents. Pillar[5]arene bearing 10 ethyl groups yielded a crystal structure of herringbone-type 1:1 complexes with n-hexane, whereas pillar[5]arene with 10 allyl groups formed 1:1 complexes featuring a one-dimensional (1D) channel structure. For pillar[5]arene bearing 10 benzyl groups, one molecule of n-hexane was located in the cavity of pillar[5]arene, and another n-hexane molecule was located outside of the cavity between two pillar[5]arenes. The substituent-dependent differences in molecular arrangement influenced the uptake, release, and molecular dynamics of the n-hexane guest. The substituent effects were not observed in host-guest chemistry in solution, and these features are unique for the crystal state host-guest chemistry of pillar[5]arenes.

Abstract
The separation of dihalobenzene isomers, such as dichlorobenzene isomers and difluorobenzene isomers, has a high practical value in both synthetic chemistry and industrial production. Herein we provide a simple to operate and energy-efficient adsorptive separation method using nonporous adaptive crystals of perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5) and pillar[6]arene (BrP6). BrP6 crystals show a preference towards the ortho isomer of dichlorobenzene in isomer mixtures, but cannot discriminate difluorobenzene isomers. Single-crystal structures reveal that this selectivity is derived from the stability of the new host-guest crystal structure of BrP6 after uptake of the preferred guest and the binding strength of the host-guest interactions. Furthermore, because of the reversible transition between guest-free and guest-loaded structures, BrP6 crystals are recyclable.

Abstract
In living systems, temperature-sensitive ion channels play a vital role in numerous cellular processes and can be controlled by biological ion channels in response to specific temperature stimuli. Facile pillar[5]arene-based host-guest interactions are introduced into a nanochannel pattern for constructing a temperature-sensitive artificial channel. Ion transport was switched from cations to anions by controlling the extent of the host bound to the guest with temperature stimuli. This efect is mainly due to the changing of the inner surface charge and wettability of the nanochannel during the process. This study paves a new way for better understanding the mechanism of temperature-sensitive properties and shows great promise for biomedical research.
