Molecular Geometry and Electronic Structure of Copper Corroles

Copper corroles are known for their unique multiconfigurational electronic structures in the ground state, which arise from the transfer of electrons from the π orbitals of the corrole to the d-orbital of copper. While density functional theory (DFT) provides reasonably good molecular geometries, the determination of the ground spin state and the associated energetics is heavily influenced by functional choice, particularly the percentage of the Hartree-Fock exchange. Using extended multireference perturbation theory methods (XMS-CASPT2), the functional choice can be assessed. The molecular geometries and electronic structures of both the unsubstituted and the meso-triphenyl copper corroles were investigated. A minimal active space was employed for structural characterization, while larger active spaces are required to examine the electronic structure. The XMS-CASPT2 investigations conclusively identify the ground electronic state as a multiconfigurational singlet (S0) with three dominant electronic configurations in its lowest energy and characteristic saddled structure. In contrast, the planar geometry corresponds to the triplet state (T0), which is approximately 5 kcal/mol higher in energy compared to the S0 state for both the bare and substituted copper corroles. Notably, the planarity of the T0 geometry is reduced in the substituted corrole compared with that in the unsubstituted one. By analyzing the potential energy surface (PES) between the S0 and T0 geometries using XMS-CASPT2, the multiconfigurational electronic structure is shown to transition toward a single electron configuration as the saddling angle decreases (i.e., as one approaches the planar geometry). Despite the ability of the functionals to reproduce the minimum energy structures, only the TPSSh-D3 PES is reasonably close to the XMS-CASPT2 surface. Significant deviations along the PES are observed with other functionals.

Synthesis, Spectral, Redox, and Sensing Studies of β-Dicyanovinyl-Appended Corroles and Their Metal Complexes

A new family of β-dicyanovinyl (DCV)-appended corroles represented as MTPC(MN) (where M = 3H, Cu, Ag, and Co(PPh₃) and MN = malononitrile and TPC = 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole) were synthesized starting from the free base mono β-formyl corrole, H₃TPC(CHO), and characterized along with their respective MTPC(CHO) and MTPC complexes as to their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties in nonaqueous media. Comparisons between the two series of corroles demonstrate a pronounced substituent effect of the β-DCV group on the physicochemical properties making the MTPC(MN) derivatives substantially easier to reduce and more difficult to oxidize than the formyl or unsubstituted corroles. In addition, the colorimetric and spectral detection of 11 different anions (X) in the form of tetrabutylammonium salts (TBAX, X = PF₆^-, OAc^-, H₂PO₄^-, CN^-, HSO₄^-, NO₃^-, ClO₄^-, F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, and I^-) were also investigated in nonaqueous media. Of the investigated anions, only CN^- was found to induce changes in the UV-vis and ¹H NMR spectra of the β-DCV metallocorroles. This data revealed that CuTPC(MN) and AgTPC(MN) act as chemodosimeters for selective cyanide ion detection via a nucleophilic attack at the vinylic carbon of the DCV substituent, while (PPh₃)CoTPC(MN) acts as a chemosensor for cyanide ion sensing via axial coordination to the cobalt metal center. A low-limit detection of cyanide ions was observed at 1.69 ppm for CuTPC(MN) and 1.17 ppm for AgTPC(MN) in toluene.

Zinc- and Cadmium meso-Aryl-Isoporphyrins: Non-Aromatic NIR Dyes with Distinct Conformational Features

A series of pyrrolyl and dipyrrinyl isoporphyrins carrying different phenyl and thienyl groups is reported. The compounds are obtained by a one-pot approach in the presence of a template reagent. Thienyl derivatives gave better yields, and were the only subclass to form with steric hindrance. The structural analyses carried out on compounds 1 and 14 revealed distinct conformational differences which are likely to result from an intramolecular NH… Cl hydrogen bridge of the pyrrolyl subclass. In addition, this hydrogen bridge strongly favors one of the two possible atropisomers. Hindered rotation of the meso-aryl groups is observed only in the cases of methylbenzothienyl derivatives 10 and 15 and leads to the observation of several diastereomers. NIR absorptions up to 923 nm are found throughout. Electrochemical investigations into the 1e- and 2e- reduced species unravel axial ligand exchange dynamics for the zinc isoporphyrin radical, and the probable formation of a zinc phlorinate.

Ligand Non-innocence and Single Molecular Spintronic Properties of AgII Dibenzocorrole Radical on Ag(111)

A facile method for the quantitative preparation of silver dibenzo-fused corrole Ag-1 is described. In contrast to the saddle conformation resolved by single-crystal X-ray analysis for Ag-1, it adopts an unprecedented domed geometry, with up and down orientations, when adsorbed on an Ag(111) surface. Sharp Kondo resonances near Fermi level, both at the corrole ligand and the silver center were observed by cryogenic STM, with relatively high Kondo temperature (172 K), providing evidence for a non-innocent Ag^II -corrole^.2- species. Further investigation validates that benzene ring fusion and molecule-substrate interactions play pivotal roles in enhancing Ag(4d(x² -y² ))-corrole (π) orbital interactions, thereby stabilizing the open-shell singlet Ag^II -corrole^.2- on Ag(111) surface. Moreover, this strategy used for constructing metal-free benzene-ring fused corrole ligand gives rise to inspiration of designing novel metal-corrole compound for multichannel molecular spintronics devices.

Bis-copper(II) Complex of Triply-linked Corrole Dimer and Its Dication

Copper complexes of corroles have recently been a subject of keen interest due to their ligand non-innocent character and unique redox properties. Here we investigated bis-copper complex of a triply-linked corrole dimer that serves as a pair of divalent metal ligands but can be reduced to a pair of trivalent metal ligands. Reaction of triply-linked corrole dimer 2 with Cu(acac)₂ (acac=acetylacetonate) gave bis-copper(II) complex 2Cu as a highly planar molecule with a mean-plane deviation value of 0.020 Å, where the two copper ions were revealed to be divalent by ESR, SQUID, and XPS methods. Oxidation of 2Cu with two equivalents of AgBF₄ gave complex 3Cu, which was characterized as a bis-copper(II) complex of a dicationic triply-linked corrole dimer not as the corresponding bis-copper(III) complex. In accord with this assignment, the structural parameters around the copper ions were revealed to be quite similar for 2Cu and 3Cu. Importantly, the magnetic spin-spin interaction differs depending on the redox-state of the ligand, being weak ferromagnetic in 2Cu and antiferromagnetic in 3Cu.

Electronic Structures of Mono-Oxidized Copper and Nickel Phosphasalen Complexes

Non-innocent ligands render the determination of the electronic structure in metal complexes difficult. As such, a combination of experimental techniques and quantum chemistry are required to correctly elucidate them. This paper deals with the one-electron oxidation of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes featuring a phosphasalen ligand (Psalen), which differs from salen analogues by the presence of iminophosphorane groups (P=N) instead of imines. Various experimental techniques (X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, NMR, EPR, and UV/Vis spectroscopies, and magnetic measurements) as well as quantum chemical calculations were used to define the electronic structure of the oxidized complexes. These can be modified by a small change in the ligand structure, that is, the replacement of a tert-butyl group by a methoxy on the phenoxide ring. The different techniques have allowed quantifying the amount of spin density located on the metal center and on the Psalen ligands. All complexes were found to possess a multi-configurational ground state, in which the ratio of the +II versus +III oxidation state of the metal center, and therefore the phenolate versus phenoxyl radical ligand character, varies upon the substituents. The tert-butyl group favors a strong localization on the metal center whereas with the methoxy group the metallic configurations decrease and the ligand configurations increase. The importance of the geometrical considerations compared with the electronic substituent effect is highlighted by the differences observed between the solid-state (EPR, magnetic measurements) and solution characterizations (EPR and NMR data).

Evidence for a [17] π-Electronic Full-Fledged Non-innocent Gallium(III)-Corrole Radical

One-electron oxidation of a Ga^III -corrole with N(4-BrC₆ H₄ )₃ SbCl₆ resulted in an air-stable non-innocent Ga^III -corrole radical. The single-crystal X-ray crystallography of the 2,17-bis-formyl-5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrolato gallium(III)(chloride) radical ([3-Cl]^. ) revealed delocalization of the unpaired electron, which was further confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and spin density distribution plot. In addition, the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), anisotropy-induced current density (AICD) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) supported a [17] π-electron-conjugated (or antiaromatic) radical.

Synthesis and Characterization of Iridium(V) Coordination Complexes With an N,O-Donor Organic Ligand

We have prepared and fully characterized two isomers of [Ir^IV (dpyp)₂ ] (dpyp=meso-2,4-di(2-pyridinyl)-2,4-pentanediolate). These complexes can cleanly oxidize to [Ir^V (dpyp)₂ ]⁺ , which to our knowledge represent the first mononuclear coordination complexes of Ir^V in an N,O-donor environment. One isomer has been fully characterized in the Ir^V state, including by X-ray crystallography, XPS, and DFT calculations, all of which confirm metal-centered oxidation. The unprecedented stability of these Ir^V complexes is ascribed to the exceptional donor strength of the ligands, their resistance to oxidative degradation, and the presence of four highly donor alkoxide groups in a plane, which breaks the degeneracy of the d-orbitals and favors oxidation.

CO2 Fixation with Epoxides under Mild Conditions with a Cooperative Metal Corrole/Quaternary Ammonium Salt Catalyst System

The cooperative catalytic activity of several metal corrole complexes in combination with tetrabutyl‐ammonium bromide (TBAB) has been investigated for the reaction of epoxides with CO₂ leading to cyclic carbonates. It was found that the use of just 0.05 mol % of a manganese(III)corrole with 2 mol % TBAB exhibits excellent catalytic activity under an atmosphere of CO₂.

Flexible Metal-Porphyrin Dimers (M=MnIII Cl, CoII , NiII , CuII ): Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, Spectroelectrochemistry, and Theoretical Calculations

Four metalloporphyrin dimers linked by bridging amide-bonded xanthene moieties and that contain either Mn^III , Co^II , Ni^II , or Cu^II metal centers were synthesized. Various spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical methods were used to study trends in their properties. Their electronic structure and optical properties were analyzed through a comparison of the electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectral data with the results of time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations.
