Abstract
Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has emerged as an important alternative to noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, there has been no Earth-abundant transition metal catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides reported so far, presumably due to the poisoning of catalysts by sulfur-containing molecules. Herein, we described the first manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines. The key to success is the use of MnBr(CO)5 instead of commonly-employed pincer-manganese catalysts, together with simple NEt3 and CuBr. This protocol features excellent selectivity on sole cleavage of the C=S bond of thioamides, in contrast to the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and unprecedented chemo-selectivity tolerating vulnerable functional groups such as nitrile, ketone, aldehyde, ester, sulfone, nitro, olefin, alkyne and heterocycle, which are usually susceptible to common hydride-type reductive protocols.

Abstract
DFT calculations on the full catalytic cycle for manganese catalysed enantioselective hydrogenation of a selection of ketones have been carried out at the PBE0-D3PCM //RI-BP86PCM level. Mn complexes of an enantiomerically pure chiral P,N,N ligand have been found to be most reactive when adopting a facial coordination mode. The use of a new ligand with an ortho-substituted dimethylamino-pyridine motif has been calculated to completely transform the levels of enantioselectivity possible for the hydrogenation of cyclic ketones relative to the first-generation Mn catalysts. In silico evaluation of substrates has been used to identify those likely to be reduced with high enantiomer ratios (er), and others that would exhibit less selectivity; good agreements were then found in experiments. Various cyclic ketones and some acetophenone derivatives were hydrogenated with er's up to 99 : 1.

Abstract
Manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation reactions have aroused widespread interest in recent years. Among the catalytic systems described, especially PNP- and NNP-Mn pincer catalysts have been reported for the hydrogenation of aldehydes, ketones, nitriles, aldimines and esters. Furthermore, NNP-Mn pincer compounds are efficient catalysts for the hydrogenolysis of less reactive amides, ureas, carbonates, and carbamates. Herein, the synthesis and application of specific imidazolylaminophosphine ligands and the corresponding Mn pincer complexes are described. These new catalysts have been characterized and studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations, and their catalytic activities have been tested in several hydrogenation reactions with good to excellent performance. Especially, the reduction of N-heterocycles can be performed under very mild conditions.

Abstract
A unique family of chiral peraza N6 -macrocyclic ligands, which are conformationally rigid and have a tunable saddle-shaped cavity, is described. Utilizing their manganese(I) complexes, the first example of earth-abundant transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric formal anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of allylic alcohols was realized, providing a practical access to synthetically important chiral γ-amino alcohols in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % yield and 98 % ee). The single-crystal structure of a MnI complex indicates that the manganese atom coordinates with the chiral dialkylamine moiety in a bidentate fashion. Further DFT calculations revealed that five of the six nitrogen atoms in the ligand were engaged in multiple noncovalent interactions with Mn, an isopropanol molecule, and a β-amino ketone intermediate via coordination, hydrogen bonding, and/or CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the transition state, showing a remarkable role of the macrocyclic framework.

Abstract
The asymmetric hydrogenation (AH) of 3H-indoles represents an ideal approach to the synthesis of useful chiral indoline scaffolds. However, very few catalytic systems based on precious metals have been developed to realize this challenging reaction. Herein, we report a Mn-catalyzed AH of 3H-indoles with excellent yields and enantioselectivities. The kinetic resolution of racemic 3H-indoles by AH was also achieved with high s-factors to construct quaternary stereocenters. Many acid-sensitive functional groups, which cannot be tolerated when using a state-of-the-art ruthenium catalyst, were compatible with manganese catalysis. This new process expands the scope of this transformation and highlights the uniqueness of earth-abundant metal catalysis. The reaction could proceed with catalyst loadings at the parts per million (ppm) level with an exceptional turnover number of 72 350. This is the highest value yet reported for an earth-abundant metal-catalyzed AH reaction.

Abstract
Homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts based on metal complexes provide a diverse and highly tunable tool for the fine chemical industry. To fully unleash their potential, fast and effective methods for the evaluation of catalytic properties are needed. In turn, this requires changes in the experimental approaches to test and evaluate the performance of the catalytic processes. Design of experiment combined with statistical analysis can enable time‐ and resource‐efficient experimentation. In this work, we employ a set of different statistical models to obtain the detailed kinetic description of a highly active homogeneous Mn (I) ketone hydrogenation catalyst as a representative model system. The reaction kinetics were analyzed using a full second order polynomial regression model, two models with eliminated parameters and finally a model which implements “chemical logic”. The coefficients obtained are compared with the corresponding high‐quality kinetic parameters acquired using conventional kinetic experiments. We demonstrate that various kinetic effects can be well captured using different statistical models, providing important insights into the reaction kinetics and mechanism of a complex catalytic reaction.

Abstract
A Cp*Ir(III) complex (1) of a newly designed ligand L1 featuring a proton-responsive pyridyl(benzamide) appended on N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been synthesized. The molecular structure of 1 reveals a dearomatized form of the ligand. The protonation of 1 with HBF4 in tetrahydrofuran gives the corresponding aromatized complex [Cp*Ir(L1 H)Cl]BF4 (2). Both compounds are characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. The protonation of 1 with acid is examined by 1 H NMR and UV-vis spectra. The proton-responsive character of 1 is exploited for catalyzing α-alkylation of ketones and β-alkylation of secondary alcohols using primary alcohols as alkylating agents through hydrogen-borrowing methodology. Compound 1 is an effective catalyst for these reactions and exhibits a superior activity in comparison to a structurally similar iridium complex [Cp*Ir(L2 )Cl]PF6 (3) lacking a proton-responsive pendant amide moiety. The catalytic alkylation is characterized by a wide substrate scope, low catalyst and base loadings, and a short reaction time. The catalytic efficacy of 1 is also demonstrated for the syntheses of quinoline and lactone derivatives via acceptorless dehydrogenation, and selective alkylation of two steroids, pregnenolone and testosterone. Detailed mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations substantiate the role of the proton-responsive ligand in the hydrogen-borrowing process.

Abstract
Hydrogenation reactions are fundamental functional group transformations in chemical synthesis. Here, we introduce an electrochemical method for the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes by in situ formation of a Mn-H species. We utilise protons and electric current as surrogate for H2 and a base-metal complex to form selectively the alcohols. The method is chemoselective for the hydrogenation of C=O bonds over C=C bonds. Mechanistic studies revealed initial 3 e- reduction of the catalyst forming the steady state species [Mn2 (H-1 L)(CO)6 ]- . Subsequently, we assume protonation, reduction and internal proton shift forming the hydride species. Finally, the transfer of the hydride and a proton to the ketone yields the alcohol and the steady state species is regenerated via reduction. The interplay of two manganese centres and the internal proton relay represent the key features for ketone and aldehyde reduction as the respective mononuclear complex and the complex without the proton relay are barely active.

Abstract
The reductive amination of ketones and aldehydes by ammonia is a highly attractive method for the synthesis of primary amines. The use of catalysts, especially reusable catalysts, based on earth-abundant metals is similarly appealing. Here, the iron-catalyzed synthesis of primary amines through reductive amination was realized. A broad scope and a very good tolerance of functional groups were observed. Ketones, including purely aliphatic ones, aryl-alkyl, dialkyl, and heterocyclic, as well as aldehydes could be converted smoothly into their corresponding primary amines. In addition, the amination of pharmaceuticals, bioactive compounds, and natural products was demonstrated. Many functional groups, such as hydroxy, methoxy, dioxol, sulfonyl, and boronate ester substituents, were tolerated. The catalyst is easy to handle, selective, and reusable and ammonia dissolved in water could be employed as the nitrogen source. The key is the use of a specific Fe complex for the catalyst synthesis and an N-doped SiC material as catalyst support.

Abstract
We report an earth-abundant-metal-catalyzed double and single methylation of alcohols. A manganese catalyst, which operates at low catalyst loadings and short reaction times, mediates these reactions efficiently. A broad scope of primary and secondary alcohols, including purely aliphatic examples, and 1,2-aminoalcohols can be methylated. Furthermore, alcohol methylation for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals has been demonstrated. The catalyst system tolerates many functional groups among them hydrogenation-sensitive examples and upscaling is easily achieved. Mechanistic investigations are indicative of a borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer mechanism involving a bimetallic K-Mn catalyst. The catalyst accepts hydrogen as a proton and a hydride from alcohols efficiently and reacts with a chalcone via hydride transfer.

Abstract
Direct reductive alkylation of amines with carboxylic acid is carried out by using an inexpensive, air-stable cobalt/triphos catalytic system with molecular hydrogen as the reductant. This efficient synthetic method proceeds through reduction and condensation, followed by reduction of the in situ-generated imine into the amine in a green catalytic process.

Abstract
A practical and sustainable synthesis of substituted quinolines was achieved through the annulation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with various secondary alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, or nitriles, under hydrogen-borrowing conditions. Under the catalysis of well-defined rhenium complexes bearing tridentate diphosphinoamino ligands, the reaction proceeded efficiently (31 examples were isolated with yields up to 96 %) affording a variety of quinoline derivatives.

Abstract
A new Mn-catalyzed alkylation of secondary alcohols with non-activated alcohols is presented. The use of a stable and well-defined manganese pincer complex, stabilized by a PNN ligand, together with a catalytic amount of base enabled the conversion of renewable alcohol feedstocks to a broad range of higher-value alcohols in good yields with water as the sole byproduct. The strategy eliminates the need for exogenous and detrimental alkyl halides as well as the use of noble metal catalysts, making the C-alkylation through double hydrogen autotransfer a highly sustainable and environmentally benign process. Mechanistic investigations support a hydrogen autotransfer mechanism in which a non-innocent ligand plays a crucial role.

Abstract
While the coordination chemistry of monometallic complexes and the surface properties of extended metal particles are well understood, the control of metal nanocluster formation has remained challenging. The isolation of discrete metal clusters provides an especially rare snapshot at the nanoscale of cluster growth. The synthesis and full characterization of the first early-transition-metal alkynyl cubane and the first μ3 -alkynyl Mn3 motif are reported.

Abstract
A catalytic system based on complexes comprising abundant and cheap manganese together with readily available aminotriazole ligands is reported. The new Mn(I) complexes are catalytically competent in transfer hydrogenation of ketones with 2-propanol as hydrogen source. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions at 80 °C for 20 h with 3 % of catalyst loading using either KO t Bu or NaOH as base. Good to excellent yields were obtained for a wide substrate scope with broad functional group tolerance. The obtained results by varying the substitution pattern of the ligand are consistent with an out-sphere mechanism for the H-transfer.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, manganese-catalyzed hydrosilylation of C=O or C=C/C≡C unsaturated bonds have undergone enormous developments. In this focus review, the hydrosilylation reactions of alkenes, alkynes, and carbonyl-containing substrates catalyzed by manganese complexes are summarized. Moreover, the mechanisms of the manganese-catalyzed hydrosilylation are briefly discussed.

Abstract
While the coordination chemistry of monometallic complexes and the surface characteristics of larger metal particles are well understood, preparations of molecular metallic nanoclusters remain a great challenge. Discrete planar metal clusters constitute nanoscale snapshots of cluster growth but are especially rare owing to the strong preference for three-dimensional structures and rapid aggregation or decomposition. A simple ligand-exchange procedure has led to the formation of a novel heteroleptic Mn6 nanocluster that crystallized in an unprecedented flat-chair topology and exhibited unique magnetic and catalytic properties. Magnetic susceptibility studies documented strong electronic communication between the manganese ions. Reductive activation of the molecular Mn6 cluster enabled catalytic hydrogenations of alkenes, alkynes, and imines.
