Abstract
A cerium-oxo nanocluster capped by chloride ligands, [CeIV38-nCeIIInO56-(n+1)(OH)n+1Cl51(H2O)11]10- (n = 1-24), has been isolated from acidic chloride solutions by using potassium counterions. The crystal structure was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction. At the center of the cluster is a {Ce14} core that exhibits the same fluorite-type structure as bulk CeO2, with eight-coordinate Ce sites bridged by tetrahedral oxo anions. The {Ce14} is further surrounded by a peripheral shell of six tetranuclear {Ce4} subunits that are located on each of the faces of the core to yield the {Ce38} cluster. The surface of the cluster is capped by 51 bridging/terminal chloride ligands and 11 water molecules; the anionic cluster is charge balanced by potassium counterions that exist in the outer coordination sphere. While assignment of the Ce oxidation state by bond valence summation was ambiguous, Ce L3-edge X-ray absorption, X-ray photoelectron, and UV-vis-NIR absorption results were consistent with a CeIII/CeIV cluster. Systematic changes in the XANES and UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra over time pointed to reactivity of the cluster upon exposure to air. These changes were examined using single crystal X-ray diffraction, and a clear single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation was captured; an overall loss of surface-bound chlorides and water molecules as well as new μ2-OH sites was observed on the cluster surface. This work provides a rare snapshot of metal oxide cluster reactivity. The results may hold implications for understanding the physical and chemical properties of ceria nanoparticles and provide insight into the behavior of other metal-oxo clusters of significant technological and environmental interest.

Abstract
The mainstream applications of visible-light photoredox catalysis predominately involve outer-sphere single-electron transfer (SET) or energy transfer (EnT) processes of precious metal RuII or IrIII complexes or of organic dyes with low photostability. Earth-abundant metal-based Mn Ln -type (M=metal, Ln =polydentate ligands) complexes are rapidly evolving as alternative photocatalysts as they offer not only economic and ecological advantages but also access to the complementary inner-sphere mechanistic modes, thereby transcending their inherent limitations of ultrashort excited-state lifetimes for use as effective photocatalysts. The generic process, termed visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH), entails the formation of suitable light-absorbing ligated metal-substrate complexes (Mn Ln -Z; Z=substrate) that can undergo homolytic cleavage to generate Mn-1 Ln and Z. for further transformations.

Abstract
Visible-light-induced C-H aerobic oxidation is an important chemical transformation that can be applied for the synthesis of aromatic ketones. High-cost catalysts and toxic solvents were generally needed in the present methodologies. Here, an efficient aqueous C-H aerobic oxidation protocol was reported. Through CeCl3 -mediated photocatalysis, a series of aromatic ketones were produced in moderate to excellent yields. With air as the oxidant, this reaction could be performed under mild conditions in water and demonstrated high activity and functional group tolerance. This method is economical, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly, and it will provide inspiration for the development of aqueous photochemical synthesis reactions.

Abstract
Utilizing light is a smart way to fuel chemical transformations as it allows the energy to be selectively focused on certain molecules. Many reactions involving electronically excited species proceed via open-shell intermediates, which offer novel and unique routes to expand the hitherto used synthetic toolbox in organic chemistry. The direct conversion of non-prefunctionalized, less activated compounds is a highly desirable goal to pave the way towards more sustainable and atom-economic chemical processes. Photoexcited closed-shell anions have been shown to reach extreme potentials in single electron transfer reactions and reveal unusual excited-state reactivity. It is, therefore, surprising that their use as a reagent or photocatalyst is limited to a few examples. In this Review, we briefly discuss the characteristics of anionic photochemistry, highlight pioneering work, and show recent progress which has been made by utilizing photoexcited anionic species in organic synthesis.

Abstract
We describe a cerium-catalyzed aerobic oxidative ring expansion for the expedient construction of synthetically challenging macrolactones under visible-light conditions. Cyanoanthracene has been employed as co-catalyst to accelerate the turnover of the cerium cycle leading to a fast conversion within 20 min of irradiation. Taking advantage of the high efficiency and operationally simple conditions, a collection of over 100 macrolactones equipped with ring systems ranging from 9- to 19-membered macrocycles have been prepared from simple building blocks. Moreover, the enabling potential of this strategy to simplify the generation of molecular complexity has been demonstrated through the concise synthesis of sonnerlactone.

Abstract
The energy of visible photons and the accessible redox potentials of common photocatalysts set thermodynamic limits to photochemical reactions that can be driven by traditional visible-light irradiation. UV excitation can be damaging and induce side reactions, hence visible or even near-IR light is usually preferable. Thus, photochemistry currently faces two divergent challenges, namely the desire to perform ever more thermodynamically demanding reactions with increasingly lower photon energies. The pooling of two low-energy photons can address both challenges simultaneously, and whilst multi-photon spectroscopy is well established, synthetic photoredox chemistry has only recently started to exploit multi-photon processes on the preparative scale. Herein, we have a critical look at currently developed reactions and mechanistic concepts, discuss pertinent experimental methods, and provide an outlook into possible future developments of this rapidly emerging area.

Abstract
The copper-photocatalyzed borylation of aryl, heteroaryl, vinyl and alkyl halides (I and Br) was reported. The reaction proceeded using a new heteroleptic Cu complex under irradiation with blue LEDs, giving the corresponding boronic-acid esters in good to excellent yields. The reaction was extended to continuous-flow conditions to allow an easy scale-up. The mechanism of the reaction was studied and a mechanism based on a reductive quenching (CuI /CuI */Cu0 ) was suggested.
