Diverse Applications of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Derivatives as Renewable Starting Materials

This Review summarizes recent efforts to capitalize on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and related furans as emerging building blocks for the synthesis of fine chemicals and materials, with a focus on advanced applications within medicinal and polymer chemistry, as well as nanomaterials. As with all chemical industries, these fields have historically relied heavily on petroleum-derived starting materials, an unsustainable and polluting feedstock. Encouragingly, the emergent chemical versatility of biomass-derived furans has been shown to facilitate derivatization towards valuable targets. Continued work on the synthetic manipulation of HMF, and related derivatives, for access to a wide range of target compounds and materials is crucial for further development. Increasingly, biomass-derived furans are being utilized for a wide range of chemical applications, the continuation of which is paramount to accelerate the paradigm shift towards a sustainable chemical industry.

Hetero-lattice intergrown and robust MOF membranes for polyol upgrading

Metal-organic framework membranes are frequently used in gas separations, but rare in pervaporation for liquid chemical upgrading, especially for separating water from polyols, due to lack of highly compact and robust micro-architecture. Here, we report hetero-lattice intergrown membranes in which amino-MIL-101 (Cr) particles embedded into the micro-gaps of MIL-53 (Al) rod arrays after secondary growth. By means of high-resolution TEM and two-dimensional topologic simulation, the connection between these two distinct MOF lattices at molecular-level and their crystallographic geometry harmony is identified, which leads to a close-knit structure at crystal boundaries of membranes. Typically, the membrane shows a separation factor as high as 13,000 for 90/10 ethanediol/water solution in pervaporation, yields polymer-grade ethanediol, and saves ca. 32% of energy consumption vs. vacuum distillation. It has a highly robust micro-architecture, with great tolerance to high pressure, durability against ultrasonic therapy and long-term separation stability over 600 h.

Elimination of Grain Boundary Defects in Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework ZIF-95 Membrane via Solvent-Free Secondary Growth

Metal-organic framework membranes are usually prepared by in situ or secondary growth in a solution/hydrogel. The use of organic solvents may cause safety and environmental problems and produce solvent-induced defects. Here, highly oriented and permselective ZIF-95 membranes are prepared for the first time via a solvent-free secondary growth method. The solvent-free growth is not only helpful to control the membrane microstructure and thickness, but also to reduce the intercrystalline defects. In case of solvent-free growth, a perfectly oriented structure leads to an outstanding reduction of intercrystalline defects and transport resistances. For the separation of equimolar binary gas mixtures by using the highly oriented ZIF-95 membrane at 25 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H₂ /CO₂ and H₂ /CH₄ are 184 and 140, respectively, with H₂ permeance of over 1.9×10^-7  mol m^-2  s^-1  Pa^-1 which are much higher than those of the randomly oriented ZIF-95 membrane.

Breathing-Assisted Selective Adsorption of C8 Alkyl Aromatics in Zn-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The breathing phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has revealed supramolecular host-guest interactions that could be beneficial for chemical separation in numerous industrial applications. The cost-effective purification of C₈ alkyl aromatics such as o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene remains challenging owing to their similar molecular structures, boiling points, kinetic diameters, polarities, etc. Herein, we report two Zn-based pillar-bilayered MOFs, denoted [Zn₂ (aip)₂ (pillar)] (aip=5-aminoisophthalic acid; pillar: bpy=4,4'-bipyridine or bpe=1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) that exhibit a breathing effect depending on the adsorbed guest molecules. Guest-dependent sorption studies in organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, methanol, benzene, and water vapor display reversible structural flexibility through the breathing effect in both framework compounds. The experiments conducted on C₈ -alkyl aromatics resulting in both MOF compounds can access these isomers in the shrunken pores, and thereby expand the pore size by framework breathing. In C₈ binary mixtures, these Zn-MOFs exhibit selective sorption properties based on the different interactions between guest C₈ aromatics and the framework structure.

Synthesis of Co3 O4 /Carbon Heteroaerogels with Ultrahigh Capacitance via Polyethyleneimine Intercalation of Co2 BIM4 Nanosheets

The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based supercapacitors have attracted intense concentration in recent years due to their regularly arranged porous and tunable pore sizes. However, the performance of the MOFs-derived supercapacitors is also low because of their poor electrical conductivity and rarely accessible active sites. In the present work, we developed a Co-MOF (namely Co₂ BIM₄ , BIM=benzimidazole) nanosheets derived Co₃ O₄ /nitrogen-doped carbon (Co₂ BIM₄ -Co₃ O₄ /NC) heteroaerogel as a novel supercapacitor electrode. The 3D Co₂ BIM₄ -Co₃ O₄ /NC heteroaerogels were obtained by directly intercalating polyethyleneimine (PEI) into the interlayers of Co₂ BIM₄ nanosheets and following by carbonizing the resulting Co₂ BIM₄ /PEI composite. The Co₂ BIM₄ -Co₃ O₄ /NC electrode possessed 3D conductive framework with an overlapped hetero-interface and expanded interlayers, leading to fast and stable charge transfer/diffusion and an enhanced pseudocapacitance performance. Therefore, the Co₂ BIM₄ -Co₃ O₄ /NC electrode showed ultrahigh capacitance of 2568 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 , 1747 F g^-1 at 10 A g^-1 , and excellent long cycling time with a capacitance preservation of 92.7 % following 10000 cycles at 10 A g^-1 , which is very promising for applications in supercapacitors and other energy storage devices.

Anisotropic Gas Separation in Oriented ZIF-95 Membranes Prepared by Vapor-Assisted In-Plane Epitaxial Growth

Control of the microstructure grain orientation, grain boundaries and thickness are crucial for MOF membranes. We report a novel synthesis strategy to prepare highly c-oriented ZIF-95 membranes through vapor-assisted in-plane epitaxial growth. In a mixed DMF/water vapor atmosphere, in-plane epitaxial growth of a ZIF-95 seeds layer was achieved to obtain an oriented and well-intergrown ZIF-95 membrane with a thickness of only 600 nm. Demonstrated by both experimental and simulation studies, the c-oriented ZIF-95 membrane displayed superior separation performance because a perfectly oriented structure resulted in a notable reduction of intercrystalline defects and transport pathways. For the separation of equimolar binary mixtures at 100 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H₂ /CO₂ and H₂ /CH₄ were 32.2 and 53.7, respectively, with an H₂ permeance of over 7.9×10^-7  mol m^-2  s^-1  Pa^-1 , which was 4.6 times higher than that of a randomly oriented ZIF-95 membrane.
