Abstract
Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, which are recognized as state-of-the-art platforms applied in various separation processes, have attracted widespread attention. Nonetheless, to overcome the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, which is crucial for achieving efficient separation, it is important to rationally design and manipulate MOF membrane structure. Given remarkable advances in the past decade, a timely summary of recent advancement in this field has become indispensable. This review introduces major strategies for fabricating oriented MOF membranes, including in situ growth, contra-diffusion method, interface-assisted approach, and laminated nanosheet assembly. New insights into their updated progress and potential are elucidated. Of particular note, recent development and emerging applications of oriented MOF membranes, illustrating their potential to address environmental and energy challenges, are highlighted. Finally, remaining challenges facing their bath production and practical applications are discussed.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted a continually increasing level of interest for large-scale energy storage because they are highly safe and have high energy density and abundant reserves. However, Zn anodes face significant challenges such as severe dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We here propose an efficient Zn2+ sieve strategy for modulating the anode chemistry using two-dimensional NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. Theoretical investigations reveal the crucial role of the Ti MOF in regulating Zn2+ solvation structures for fast diffusion and uniform deposition and decreasing HER reactivity. The structure of the nanosheets enables abundant accessible desolvation sites and shortened ionic pathways. As a result, the MOF nanosheet-protected Zn anode exhibited greatly improved cycling stability in both symmetric cells and full cells. Operando optical monitoring and postmortem analysis revealed effective suppression of dendrite growth and HER by Ti MOF nanosheets. This anti-HER MOF-enabled Zn2+ sieve strategy provides a viable Zn anode and provides new insights for optimizing aqueous batteries.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been largely investigated worldwide for their use in the capture of radioactive iodine due to its potential release during nuclear accident events and reprocessing of nuclear fuel. The present work deals with the capture of gaseous I2 under a continuous flow and its subsequent transformation into I3- within the porous structures of three distinct, yet structurally related, terephthalate-based MOFs: MIL-125(Ti), MIL-125(Ti)_NH2, and CAU-1(Al)_NH2. The synthesized materials exhibited specific surface areas (SSAs) with similar order of magnitude: 1207, 1099, and 1110 m2 g-1 for MIL-125(Ti), MIL-125(Ti)_NH2, and CAU-1(Al)_NH2, respectively. Because of that, it was possible to evaluate the influence of other variables over the iodine uptake capacity─such as band gap energies, functional groups, and charge transfer complexes (CTC). After 72 h of contact with the I2 gas flow, MIL-125(Ti)_NH2 was able to trap 11.0 mol mol-1 of I2, followed by MIL-125(Ti) (8.7 mol mol-1), and by CAU-1(Al)_NH2 (4.2 mol mol-1). The enhanced ability to retain I2 in the MIL-125(Ti)_NH2 was associated with a combined effect between its amino group (which has a great affinity toward iodine), its smaller band gap (2.5 eV against 2.6 and 3.8 eV for CAU-1(Al)_NH2 and MIL-125(Ti), respectively), and its efficient charge separation. In fact, the presence of a linker-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism in MIL-125(Ti) compounds separates the photogenerated electrons and holes into the two distinct moieties of the MOF: the organic linker (which stabilizes the holes) and the oxy/hydroxy inorganic cluster (which stabilizes the electrons). This effect was observed using EPR spectroscopy, whereas the reduction of the Ti4+ cations into the paramagnetic Ti3+ species was evidenced after irradiation of the pristine Ti-based MOFs with UV light (<420 nm). In contrast, because CAU-1(Al)_NH2 exhibits a purely linker-based transition (LBT)─with no EPR signals related to Al paramagnetic species─it tends to exhibit faster recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers as, in this case, both electrons and holes are located over the organic linker. Furthermore, the transformation of the gaseous I2 into In- [n = 5, 7, 9, ...] intermediates and then into I3- species was evaluated using Raman spectroscopy by following the evolution of their respective bands at about 198, 180, and 113 cm-1. This conversion─which is favored by an effective charge separation and smaller band gaps─increases the I2 uptake capacity of the compounds by creating specific adsorption sites for these anionic species. In fact, because the -NH2 groups act as an antenna to stabilize the photogenerated holes, both In- and I3- are adsorbed into the organic linker via an electrostatic interaction with these positively charged entities. Finally, changes regarding the EPR spectra before and after the iodine loading were considered to propose a mechanism for the electron transfer from the MOFs structure to the I2 molecules considering their different characteristics.

Abstract
Concurrent regulation of crystallographic orientation and thickness of zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) membranes is challenging but promising for their performance enhancement. In this study, we pioneered the fabrication of uniform triangular-shaped, 40 nm thick UiO-66 nanosheet (NS) seeds by employing an anisotropic etching strategy. Through innovating confined counter-diffusion-assisted epitaxial growth, highly (111)-oriented 165 nm-thick UiO-66 membrane was prepared. The significant reduction in thickness and diffusion barrier in the framework endowed the membrane with unprecedented CO2 permeance (2070 GPU) as well as high CO2 /N2 selectivity (35.4), which surpassed the performance limits of state-of-the-art polycrystalline MOF membranes. In addition, highly (111)-oriented 180 nm-thick NH2 -UiO-66 membrane showing superb H2 /CO2 separation performance with H2 permeance of 1230 GPU and H2 /CO2 selectivity of 41.3, was prepared with the above synthetic procedure.

Abstract
Molecular sieving membranes have great potential for energy-saving separations, but they suffer from permeability-selectivity trade-off limitation. In this report, simultaneous hetero-crystallization and hetero-linker coordination of metal-organic framework (MOF) hollow fiber membranes through one-pot synthesis for precise gas separation is reported. It is found that the hetero-polycrystalline membranes consist of 2D and 3D MOF phases and are defect-free and roughly orientated, hetero-linker exchange of 3D phase by larger geometric ones can narrow transport pathway, and framework rigidification occurs and thus fixes MOF channels. The prepared membranes are robust and reproducible, and exhibit substantially improved performance, with H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 selectivities up to 361, 482, and 541, respectively, accompanied by high H2 permeance over 1100 gas permeation units, which can easily outclass trade-off upper bounds of state-of-the-art membranes.

Abstract
Complete suppression of twin crystal formation in oriented metal-organic framework (MOF) film remains a great challenge. In this study, we successfully avoided the twin generation in c-oriented NH2-MIL-125 film through simple competitive metal ion-based coordination modulation. Simultaneously, relevant mechanism associated with twin suppression was elucidated.

Abstract
The development of a facile strategy to construct defect-free and flexible metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes with high selectivity and good scalability holds great appeal. Here we report the fabrication of soft-solid MOF composite membranes on polyvinylidene fluoride substrates. A representative membrane comprised of quasi-vertically grown lamellar Zn2 (Bim)4 (Bim=benzimidazolate) and lateral ultrathin polyamide film adhering to the MOF side facets. The straight interlayer galleries within unwrapped Zn2 (Bim)4 acted as predominant pathways, while the polyamide served the function of defect elimination, synergistically inducing an unprecedented H2 /CO2 selectivity of 1084 which set a new record for MOF-based membranes. Separation performance was held constant after membrane rolling up into a tube with a diameter of 3 mm or folding and unfolding at 90° for 50 times. ZIF-67 and ZIF-8 composite membranes based on this strategy also realized extremely high H2 /CO2 separation accuracies. These results, which demonstrate the intrinsic molecular sieving capability of MOFs, will promote the development of MOF-based membranes in practical separation applications.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework membranes are frequently used in gas separations, but rare in pervaporation for liquid chemical upgrading, especially for separating water from polyols, due to lack of highly compact and robust micro-architecture. Here, we report hetero-lattice intergrown membranes in which amino-MIL-101 (Cr) particles embedded into the micro-gaps of MIL-53 (Al) rod arrays after secondary growth. By means of high-resolution TEM and two-dimensional topologic simulation, the connection between these two distinct MOF lattices at molecular-level and their crystallographic geometry harmony is identified, which leads to a close-knit structure at crystal boundaries of membranes. Typically, the membrane shows a separation factor as high as 13,000 for 90/10 ethanediol/water solution in pervaporation, yields polymer-grade ethanediol, and saves ca. 32% of energy consumption vs. vacuum distillation. It has a highly robust micro-architecture, with great tolerance to high pressure, durability against ultrasonic therapy and long-term separation stability over 600 h.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework membranes are usually prepared by in situ or secondary growth in a solution/hydrogel. The use of organic solvents may cause safety and environmental problems and produce solvent-induced defects. Here, highly oriented and permselective ZIF-95 membranes are prepared for the first time via a solvent-free secondary growth method. The solvent-free growth is not only helpful to control the membrane microstructure and thickness, but also to reduce the intercrystalline defects. In case of solvent-free growth, a perfectly oriented structure leads to an outstanding reduction of intercrystalline defects and transport resistances. For the separation of equimolar binary gas mixtures by using the highly oriented ZIF-95 membrane at 25 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H2 /CO2 and H2 /CH4 are 184 and 140, respectively, with H2 permeance of over 1.9×10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 which are much higher than those of the randomly oriented ZIF-95 membrane.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising two-dimensional building block for fabricating high-performance gas separation membranes. Whereas the tortuous transport pathway may increase the transport distance and lead to a low gas permeation rate, introducing spacers into GO laminates is an effective strategy to enlarge the interlayer channel for enhanced gas permeance. Herein, we propose to intercalate CO2 -philic MIL-101(Cr) metal-organic framework nanocrystals into the GO laminates to construct a 2D/3D hybrid structure for gas separation. The interlayer channels were partially opened up to accelerate gas permeation. Meanwhile, the intrinsic pores of MIL-101 provided additional transport pathways, and the affinity of MIL-101 to CO2 molecules resulted in higher H2 /CO2 diffusion selectivity, leading to a simultaneous enhancement in gas permeance and separation selectivity. The MIL-101(Cr)/GO membrane with optimal structures exhibited outstanding and stable mixed-gas separation performance with H2 permeance of 67.5 GPU and H2 /CO2 selectivity of 30.3 during the 120-h continuous test, demonstrating its potential in H2 purification application.

Abstract
Coordination polymer (CP) glasses offer a way to tackle the fabrication challenges encountered by inorganic porous membranes and show great potentials for size-exclusive gas separation. However, their processability and performance still cannot simultaneously meet the requirements for high-performance membrane separation. Herein, we have developed a series of CP glasses (M-P-dmbIm, M=Zn, Cd, Cu, and Mn), which possess low vitrification temperature as well as low viscosity (η) and lave capability above the transition temperatures. The derived glass (ag M-P-dmbIm) membranes show outstanding performances for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 separation, which all far surpass the Robeson upper bound and even rival against the best of the state-of-the-art gas separation membranes. The low viscosities not only allow us to hot-cast or hot-press the CP glasses into thin membranes within 5 min without sacrificing their selectivity and permeability, but also endow the resulted glass membranes with healing ability.

Abstract
We orderly assembled zero-dimensional 2-methylimidazole (mim) molecules into unprecedented supramolecule array membranes (SAMs) through solvent-free vapor processing, realizing the intermolecular spacing of mim at ca. 0.30 nm available as size-sieving channels for distinguishing the tiny difference between H2 (kinetic diameter: 0.289 nm) and CO2 (kinetic diameter: 0.33 nm). The highly oriented and dense membranes yield a separation factor above 3600 for equimolar H2 /CO2 mixtures, which is one order of magnitude higher than those of the state-of-the-art membranes defining 2017's upper bound for H2 /CO2 separation. These SAMs define a new benchmark for molecular sieve membranes and are of paramount importance to precombustion carbon capture. Given the range of supramolecules, we anticipate SAMs with variable intermolecular channels could be applied in diversified separations that are prevalent in chemical processes.

Abstract
In this study, we report an efficient fabrication method for the membrane of a metal-organic framework (MOF) (Kgm-OEt) which is one kind of kagomé-type MOF with a two-dimensional (2D) sheet structure having one-dimensional (1D) channels suitable for separation of H2 from other larger gases. The Kgm-OEt seed layer was created on an Al2 O3 substrate using layer-by-layer (LBL) growth, then a membrane was fabricated by secondary growth. The membrane on a 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTEs)-treated substrate obtained in this method was continuous and defect-free with the crystal orientation suitable for gas transportation, while the membrane grown on an unmodified substrate was loosely packed with unfavorable crystal orientation.

Abstract
Microstructural optimization (such as thickness and preferred orientation) is a major concern for performance enhancement of zeolite membranes. In this study, we demonstrated that the introduction of hierarchy easily enabled concurrent thickness reduction and orientation control of zeolite membranes. Specifically, hierarchical MFI zeolite membranes comprising higher degree of (h0h) preferentially oriented ultrathin (ca. 390 nm) selective top layers and porous intermediate layers on porous α-Al2 O3 substrates were fabricated. The use of hollow-structured MFI nanoseeds and the employment of single-mode microwave heating during membrane processing were found indispensable for the preparation of MFI zeolite membranes with superior butane isomer separation performance, thereby surpassing the current n-/i-butane selectivity versus n-butane permeance trade-off limits of MFI zeolite membranes prepared via solution-based synthetic protocols.

Abstract
Control of the microstructure grain orientation, grain boundaries and thickness are crucial for MOF membranes. We report a novel synthesis strategy to prepare highly c-oriented ZIF-95 membranes through vapor-assisted in-plane epitaxial growth. In a mixed DMF/water vapor atmosphere, in-plane epitaxial growth of a ZIF-95 seeds layer was achieved to obtain an oriented and well-intergrown ZIF-95 membrane with a thickness of only 600 nm. Demonstrated by both experimental and simulation studies, the c-oriented ZIF-95 membrane displayed superior separation performance because a perfectly oriented structure resulted in a notable reduction of intercrystalline defects and transport pathways. For the separation of equimolar binary mixtures at 100 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H2 /CO2 and H2 /CH4 were 32.2 and 53.7, respectively, with an H2 permeance of over 7.9×10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 , which was 4.6 times higher than that of a randomly oriented ZIF-95 membrane.

Abstract
Flow batteries (FBs) are one of the most attractive candidates for stationary energy storage and vital in realizing the wide application of renewable energies. Membranes play an important role in isolating redox couples while transporting ions to close the internal electrical circuit. Therefore, membranes with high selectivity and conductivity are highly important. Among different membranes, a composite membrane with independent design of support layer and thin selective top layer becomes one of the most promising candidates to break the trade-off between selectivity and conductivity. In this Review, recent studies on composite membranes for FBs and the principles of membrane design in different systems are discussed and summarized. Finally, the future direction on membrane design for different FBs is presented, which will provide an extensive, comprehensive reference to design and construct high-performance composite membranes for FBs.

Abstract
This study systematically evaluates the performance of a series of TiO2 nanoflower (TNF) photocatalysts for aqueous methylene blue photo-oxidation under UV irradiation. TNF nanoflowers were synthesized from Ti(IV) butoxide by a hydrothermal method and then calcined at different temperatures (T = 400-800 °C) for specific periods of time (t = 1-5 h). By varying the calcination conditions, TNF-T-t photocatalysts with diverse physicochemical properties and anatase/rutile ratios were obtained. Many of the TNF-T-1 photocatalysts demonstrated remarkable activity for aqueous methylene blue photo-oxidation at pH 6 under UV excitation (365 nm), with activities following the order TNF-700-1 > TNF-600-1 > TNF-500-1 > TNF-400-1 ∼ P25 TiO2 ≫ TNF-800-1. The activity of the TNF-700-1 photocatalyst (99% anatase, 1% rutile) was 2.3 times that of P25 TiO2 at pH 6 and 14.4 times that of P25 TiO2 at pH 4. Prolonged calcination of the TNFs at 700 °C proved detrimental to dye degradation performance due to excessive rutile formation, which reduced the photocatalyst surface area and suppressed OH• generation. The outstanding activities of TNF-700-1 and TNF-600-1 are attributed to their hierarchical nanoflower morphology which benefitted UV absorption, a near-ideal anatase crystallite size for efficient charge separation, and their unusually low isoelectric point (IEP = 4.3-4.5).
