Halide Double Perovskite Ferroelectrics

Transition from Dion-Jacobson hybrid layered double perovskites to 1D perovskites for ultraviolet to visible photodetection

New perovskite phases having diverse optoelectronic properties are the need of the hour. We present five variations of R2AgM(iii)X8, where R = NH3C4H8NH3 (4N4) or NH3C6H12NH3 (6N6); M(iii) = Bi3+ or Sb3+; and X = Br- or I-, by tuning the composition of (4N4)2AgBiBr8, a structurally rich hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP). (4N4)2AgBiBr8, (4N4)2AgSbBr8, and (6N6)2AgBiBr8 crystallize as Dion-Jacobson (DJ) HLDPs, whereas 1D (6N6)SbBr5, (4N4)-BiI and (4N4)-SbI have trans-connected chains by corner-shared octahedra. Ag+ stays out of the 1D lattice either when SbBr63- distortion is high or if Ag+ needs to octahedrally coordinate with I-. Band structure calculations show a direct bandgap for all the bromide phases except (6N6)2AgBiBr8. (4N4)2AgBiBr8 with lower octahedral tilt shows a maximum UV responsivity of 18.8 ± 0.2 A W-1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6360 ± 58%, at 2.5 V. When self-powered (0 V), (4N4)-SbI has the best responsivity of 11.7 ± 0.2 mA W-1 under 485 nm visible light, with fast photoresponse ≤100 ms.

Lead-Free Halide Double Perovskite for High-Performance Photodetectors: Progress and Perspective

Lead halide perovskite has become a promising candidate for high-performance photodetectors (PDs) due to its attractive optical and electrical properties, such as high optical absorption coefficient, high carrier mobility, and long carrier diffusion length. However, the presence of highly toxic lead in these devices has limited their practical applications and even hindered their progress toward commercialization. Therefore, the scientific community has been committed to searching for low-toxic and stable perovskite-type alternative materials. Lead-free double perovskite, which is still in the preliminary stage of exploration, has achieved inspiring results in recent years. In this review, we mainly focus on two types of lead-free double perovskite based on different Pb substitution strategies, including A₂M(I)M(III)X₆ and A₂M(IV)X₆. We review the research progress and prospects of lead-free double perovskite photodetectors in the past three years. More importantly, from the perspective of optimizing the inherent defects in materials and improving device performance, we propose some feasible pathways and make an encouraging perspective for the future development of lead-free double perovskite photodetectors.

Rational Design of Ferroelectric 2D Perovskite for Improving the Efficiency of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells Over 23

Despite the great progress of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs), it still faces several challenges during the homogeneous fabrication of high-quality perovskite thin films, and overcoming the insufficient exciton dissociation. To the ends, we rationally design the ferroelectric two-dimensional (2D) perovskite based on pyridine heterocyclic ring as the organic interlayer. We uncover that incorporation of the ferroelectric 2D material into 3D perovskite induces an increased built-in electric field (BEF), which enhances the exciton dissociation efficiency in the device. Moreover, the 2D seeds could assist the 3D crystallization by forming more homogeneous and highly-oriented perovskite crystals. As a result, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 23 % has been achieved by the f-PSCs with outstanding ambient stability. Moreover, the piezo/ferroelectric 2D perovskite intrigues a decreased hole transport barriers at the ITO/perovskite interface under tensile stress, which opens new possibilities for developing highly-efficient f-PSCs.

Two-Step Dielectric Responsive Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Material with Mid-Band Light Emission

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) have received tremendous scientific attention because of the phase transition and photovoltaic properties. However, achieving the special perovskite structure with both two-step dielectric response and luminescence characteristics is rarely reported. Herein, we report an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite, [(BA)₂  ⋅ PbI₄ ] (Compound 1, BA=n-butylamine) by introducing flexible organic cations (HBA⁺ ), with direct mid-band gap as 2.28 eV. Interestingly, this material exhibits two-step reversible dielectric response at 350 K and 460 K (in heating process), respectively. Besides, the photoluminescence was found: it emits charming green light under 365 nm lamp (Photoluminescence quantum yield is 9.52 %). The outstanding two-step dielectric response and luminescence characteristics of this compound might pave the way for the application of dielectric and ferroelectric functional materials in temperature sensors and mechanical switches.

High-Temperature and Large-Polarization Ferroelectric with Second Harmonic Generation Response in a Novel Crown Ether Clathrate

Molecular ferroelectrics of high-temperature reversible phase transitions are very rare and have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this paper is described the successful synthesis of a novel high-temperature host-guest inclusion ferroelectric: [(C₆ H₅ NF₃ )(18-crown-6)][BF₄ ] (1) that shows a pair of reversible peaks at 348 K (heating) and 331 K (cooling) with a heat hysteresis about 17 K by differential scanning calorimetry measurements, thus indicating that 1 undergoes a reversible structural phase transition. Variable-temperature PXRD and temperature-dependent dielectric measurements further prove the phase-transition behavior of 1. The second harmonic response demonstrates that 1 belongs to a non-centrosymmetric space group at room temperature and is a good nonlinear optical material. In its semiconducting properties, 1 shows a wide optical band gap of about 4.43 eV that comes chiefly from the C, H and O atoms of the crystals. In particular, the ferroelectric measurements of 1 exhibit a typical polarization-electric hysteresis loop with a large spontaneous polarization (P_s ) of about 4.06 μC/cm² . This finding offers an alternative pathway for designing new ferroelectric-dielectric and nonlinear optical materials and related physical properties in organic-inorganic and other hybrid crystals.
