Structurally Flexible 2D Spacer for Suppressing the Electron-Phonon Coupling Induced Non-Radiative Decay in Perovskite Solar Cells

This study presents experimental evidence of the dependence of non-radiative recombination processes on the electron-phonon coupling of perovskite in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Via A-site cation engineering, a weaker electron-phonon coupling in perovskite has been achieved by introducing the structurally soft cyclohexane methylamine (CMA+) cation, which could serve as a damper to alleviate the mechanical stress caused by lattice oscillations, compared to the rigid phenethyl methylamine (PEA+) analog. It demonstrates a significantly lower non-radiative recombination rate, even though the two types of bulky cations have similar chemical passivation effects on perovskite, which might be explained by the suppressed carrier capture process and improved lattice geometry relaxation. The resulting PSCs achieve an exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5% with a record-high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.20 V for narrow bandgap perovskite (FAPbI3). The established correlations between electron-phonon coupling and non-radiative decay provide design and screening criteria for more effective passivators for highly efficient PSCs approaching the Shockley-Queisser limit.

[Preliminary observation of wearable balance diagnosis and treatment system in evaluating dynamic and static balance function in patients with vestibular vertigo]

A newly developed wearable balance diagnosis and treatment system was studied to evaluate the indexes of the abnormal balance function in patients with vestibular vertigo. A cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 30 patients diagnosed with non-acute vestibular vertigo in the outpatient department of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University from July 2022 to May 2023 were selected as the vertigo group, including 13 males and 17 females, and aged (45.7±13.9) years. Meanwhile, 20 healthy controls (8 males and 12 females) were included as the control group, with a mean age of (43.6±8.0) years. The static balance and limits of stability (LOS) function of all subjects were assessed with wearable balance diagnosis and treatment system developed under the leadership of Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University. In the static balance test, the ratio of eyes open with cushions to eyes open without cushions in the vertigo group was less than that of the control group[1.20% (0.92%, 1.53%) vs 1.49% (1.22%, 1.81%), P=0.008], indicating that patients with non-acute vestibular vertigo may compensate static balance ability earlier. In vertigo group, the directional control in 8 directions, the maximum excursion in anterior, posterior, right anterior and right posterior directions, the endpoint excursion in the posterior, right posterior, and left posterior directions were all smaller than those of the control group (all P<0.05). The reaction time in the left posterior direction of vertigo group was longer than that of the control group (all P<0.05). Those results indicated that the directional control, maximum excursion and endpoint excursion of LOS could be considered as important reference indexes for dynamic balance function.

Dynamic Reversible Oxidation-Reduction of Iodide Ions for Operationally Stable Perovskite Solar Cells under ISOS-L-3 Protocol

Despite rapid advancements in the photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their operational stability remains a significant challenge for commercialization. This instability mainly arises from light-induced halide ion migration and subsequent oxidation into iodine (I2). The situation is exacerbated when considering the heat effects at elevated temperatures, leading to the volatilization of I2 and resulting in irreversible device degradation. Mercaptoethylammonium iodide (ESAI) is thus incorporated into perovskite as an additive to inhibit the oxidation of iodide anion (I-) and  the light-induced degradation pathway of FAPbI3→FAI+PbI2. Additionally, the formation of a thiol-disulfide/I--I2 redox pair within the perovskite film provides a dynamic mechanism for the continuous reduction of I2 under light and thermal stresses, facilitating the healing of iodine-induced degradations. This approach significantly enhances the operational stability of PSCs. Under the ISOS-L-3 testing protocol (maximum power point (MPP) tracking in an environment with relative humidity of ≈50% at ≈65 °C), the treated PSCs maintain 97% of their original power conversion efficieney (PCE) after 300 h of aging. In contrast, control devices exhibit almost complete degradation, primarily due to rapid thermal-induced I2 volatilization. These results demonstrate a promising strategy to overcome critical stability challenges in PSCs, particularly in scenarios involving thermal effects.

Multifunctional Trifluoroborate Additive for Simultaneous Carrier Dynamics Governance and Defects Passivation to Boost Efficiency and Stability of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The main obstacles to promoting the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) include their record power conversion efficiency (PCE), which still remains below the Shockley-Queisser limit, and poor long-term stability, attributable to crystallographic defects in perovskite films and open-circuit voltage (Voc) loss in devices. In this study, potassium (4-tert-butoxycarbonylpiperazin-1-yl) methyl trifluoroborate (PTFBK) was employed as a multifunctional additive to target and modulate bulk perovskite defects and carrier dynamics of PSCs. Apart from simultaneously passivating anionic and cationic defects, PTFBK could also optimize the energy-level alignment of devices and weaken the interaction between carriers and longitudinal optical phonons, resulting in a carrier lifetime of greater than 3 μs. Furthermore, it inhibited non-radiative recombination and improved the crystallization capacity in the target perovskite film. Hence, the target rigid and flexible p-i-n PSCs yielded champion PCEs of 24.99 % and 23.48 %, respectively. More importantly, due to hydrogen bonding between formamidinium and fluorine, the target devices exhibited remarkable thermal, humidity, and operational tracking at maximum power point stabilities. The reduced Young's modulus and residual stress in the perovskite layer also provided excellent bending stability for flexible target devices.

DNA Repair Genetics and the Risk of Radiation Pneumonitis in Patients With Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

AIMS

ERCC1 rs11615 and ERCC2 rs238406 single nuclear polymorphism (SNPs) are known for their association with treatment outcome, likely related to radiosensitivity of both tumor and normal tissue in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. This study aimed to review the effect of 1) these ERCC1/2 SNPs and 2) other SNPs of DNA repair genes on radiation pneumonitis (RP) in patients with lung cancer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

SNPs of our interest included ERCC1 rs11615 and ERCC2 rs238406 and other genes of DNA repair pathways that are functional and biologically active. DNA repair SNPs reported by at least two independent studies were pooled for meta-analysis. The study endpoint was radiation pneumonitis (RP) after radiotherapy. Recessive, dominant, homozygous, heterozygous, and allelic genotype models were used where appropriate.

RESULTS

A total of 16 studies (3080 patients) were identified from the systematic review and 12 studies (2090 patients) on 11 SNPs were included in the meta-analysis. The SNPs were ATM rs189037, ATM rs373759, NEIL1 rs4462560, NEIL1 rs7402844, APE1 rs1130409, XRCC3 rs861539, ERCC1 rs11615, ERCC1 rs3212986, ERCC2 rs238406, ERCC2 rs13181, and XRCC1 rs25487. ERCC1 rs11615 (236 patients) and ERCC2 rs238406 (254 patients) were not significantly associated with RP. Using the allelic model, the G allele for NEIL1 gene was significantly associated with a reduced odds of developing symptomatic (grade ≥2) RP compared to the C allele for rs7402844 (OR 0.70, 95% CI: 0.49, 0.99, P = 0.04). Similarly, the T allele for APE1 gene was significantly associated with a reduced odds of developing symptomatic (grade ≥2) RP compared to the G allele for rs1130409 (OR 0.59, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.81, P = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Genetic variation in the DNA repair pathway genes may play a significant role in the risk of developing radiation pneumonitis in patients with lung cancer. Further studies are needed on genotypic features of DNA repair pathway genes and their association with treatment sensitivity, as such knowledge may guide personalized radiation dose prescription.

Is cryoablation still suitable for advanced non-small cell lung cancer after failure of first-line chemotherapy? A multicenter, prospective, randomized-controlled trial of eighty-seven patients

The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of cryoablation treatment in advanced NSCLC patients who had failed first-line chemotherapy. Eighty-seven patients from ten hospitals in China were enrolled into the study, forty-four patients received cryoablation treatment plus basic treatment (experimental group), and forty-three patients had basic treatment alone (control group). Follow-up was performed once every three months until the end of the study or the death of the patient. The primary endpoints were overall and post-intervention survival; secondary endpoints included tumor markers, solid tumor efficacy, and symptom changes before and after treatment. There was no significant difference in median OS between the two groups of patients (9.0 months vs 11.2 months, P = 0.583). The disease control rate (DCR) and living quality of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. In terms of OS, indiscriminate use of cryoablation for such patients was not beneficial, though it could improve symptoms of patients. Cryoablation had a significant effect on selected advanced NSCLC patients after the failure of first-line chemotherapy.

Inhibition performance of uniconazole on steel corrosion in simulated concrete pore solution: An eco-friendly way for steel protection

Corrosion inhibitors play a vital role in impeding the corrosion process of steel bars within concrete structures exposed to corrosive environments. Nevertheless, conventional corrosion inhibitors pose environmental risks. In contrast, contemporary studies have explored corrosion inhibitors that are eco-friendly. However, these inhibitors are burdened by high costs and complex production processes, impeding the widespread application in concrete structures. Consequently, this study presents an innovative solution by incorporating uniconazole, an agricultural fungicide, as a corrosion inhibitor for steel bars in concrete structures. The steel bars were exposed to corrosion within a simulated concrete pore solution containing 0.6 mol/L NaCl, both with and without the presence of uniconazole. The morphology and hydrophilicity of the steel bar surface were investigated via optical microscope and contact angle experiments. Electrochemical tests (open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky analysis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to investigate the corrosion inhibition performance and mechanism of uniconazole. The results demonstrate that uniconazole elevates the hydrophobicity and contributes to the corrosion inhibition of steel bars. Electrochemical test results indicate that as the concentration of uniconazole increases from 1 × 10-4 mol/L to 1 × 10-3 mol/L, the inhibition efficiency likewise demonstrates a corresponding increase, escalating from around 50 %-90 %. Uniconazole molecules function as mixed-type inhibitors, exhibiting characteristics of both anode-type and cathode-type inhibitors. The adsorption of uniconazole enhances the stability and thickness of the passive-adsorbed layer on the steel surface, effectively impeding the charge transfer process and obstructing the interaction of corrosive substances with the base metal. In summary, the application of uniconazole exhibits the highlights of efficient, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and the potential for scalable production. This positions uniconazole as a promising candidate for use as a corrosion inhibitor in the domain of concrete structures.

Epitaxial Growth of α-FAPbI3 at a Well-Matched Heterointerface for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells and Solar Modules

Although the FAPbI3 perovskite system exhibits an impressive optoelectronic characteristic and thermal stability because of its energetically unstable black phase at room temperature, it is considerably challenging to attain a controllable and oriented nucleation of α-FAPbI3 . To overcome this challenge, a 2D perovskite with a released inorganic octahedral distortion designed by weakening the hydrogen interactions between the organic interlayer and [PbI6 ]4- octahedron is presented in this study. A highly matched heterointerface can be formed between the (002) facet of the 2D structure and the (100) crystal plane of the cubic α-FAPbI3 , thereby lowering the crystallization energy and inducing a heterogeneous nucleation of α-FAPbI3 . This "epitaxial growth" mechanism results form the highly preferred crystallographic orientation of the (100) facets, improved crystal quality and film uniformity, substantially increased charge transporting characteristics, and suppressed nonradiative recombination losses. An impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.4% (certified 25.2%) is achieved using target PSCs, which demonstrates outstanding ambient and operational stability. The feasibility of this strategy is proved for the scalable deposition of homogeneous and high-quality perovskite thin films by demonstrating the remarkably increased PCE of the large-area perovskite solar module, from 18.2% to 20.1%.

Material and Device Design of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells for Next-Generation Power Supplies

This review outlines the rapid evolution of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs) to address the urgent need for alternative energy sources, highlighting their impressive power conversion efficiency, which increases from 2.62% to over 24% within a decade. The unique optoelectronic properties of perovskite materials and their inherent mechanical flexibilities instrumental in the development of f-PSCs are examined. Various strategies proposed for material modification and device optimization significantly enhance efficiency and bending durability. The transition from small-scale devices to large-area photovoltaic modules for diverse applications is discussed in addition to the challenges and innovative solutions related to film uniformity and environmental stability. This review provides succinct yet comprehensive insights into the development of f-PSCs, paving the way for their integration into various applications and highlighting their potential in the renewable energy landscape.

Cytomegalovirus Infection and Alzheimer's Disease: A Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Evidence on the association of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is scarce and the results are inconsistent.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the association of CMV infection with the risk of AD.

METHODS

Observational studies on the relationship between CMV infection and AD were identified from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library until September 30, 2022. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Random-effect meta-analysis was performed using a generic inverse-variance method, followed by sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses based on study designs, regions, adjustments, and population types.

RESULTS

Our search yielded 870 articles, of which 200 were duplicates and 663 did not meet the inclusion criteria, and finally yielded seven studies with 6,772 participants. No strong evidence was observed in the summary analysis for the association of CMV infection and risk of AD (odds ratio [OR] = 1.33; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88, 2.03, I2 =69.9%). However, subgroup analysis showed that an increased risk of AD was detected in East Asians (OR = 2.39; 95% CI: 1.63, 3.50, I2 = 0.00%), cohort studies (OR = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.35, 2.94, I2 = 28.20%), and studies with confounder adjustment (OR = 2.05; 95% CI: 1.52, 2.77, I2 = 0.00%).

CONCLUSIONS

This meta-analysis provides evidence to support the heterogeneity of the associations between CMV infection and AD. Future studies with larger sample sizes and multi-ethnic populations are necessary.

Malonate differentially affects cell survival and confers chemoresistance in cancer cells via the induction of p53-dependent autophagy

Metabolic network intertwines with cancerous signaling and drug responses. Malonate is a prevailing metabolite in cancer and a competitive inhibitor of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). Recent studies showed that malonate induced reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent apoptosis in neuroblastoma cells, but protected cells from ischemia-reperfusion injury. We here revealed that malonate differentially regulated cell death and survival in cancer cells. While high-dose malonate triggered ROS-dependent apoptosis, the low-dose malonate induced autophagy and conferred resistance to multiple chemotherapeutic agents. Mechanistically, our results showed that malonate increased p53 stability and transcriptionally up-regulated autophagy modulator DRAM (damage-regulated autophagy modulator), thus promoting autophagy. We further proved that autophagy is required for malonate-associated chemoresistance. Collectively, our findings suggest that malonate plays a double-edge function in cancer response to stressors, and highlights a pro-cancer impact of p53-induced autophagy in response to malonate.

Real-time electron clustering in an event-driven hybrid pixel detector

Event-driven hybrid pixel detectors with nanosecond time resolution have opened up novel pathways in modern ultrafast electron microscopy, for example in hyperspectral electron-energy loss spectroscopy or free-electron quantum optics. However, the impinging electrons typically excite more than one pixel of the device, and an efficient algorithm is therefore needed to convert the measured pixel hits to real single-electron events. Here we present a robust clustering algorithm that is fast enough to find clusters in a continuous stream of raw data in real time. Each tuple of position and arrival time from the detector is continuously compared to a buffer of previous hits until the probability of a merger with an old event becomes irrelevant. In this way, the computation time becomes independent of the density of electron arrival and the algorithm does not break the operation chain. We showcase the performance of the algorithm with a 'timepix' camera in two regimes of electron microscopy, in continuous beam emission and laser-triggered femtosecond mode.

Nucleation Regulation and Mesoscopic Dielectric Screening in α-FAPbI3

While significant advancements in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of α-FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been made, attaining controllable perovskite crystallization is still a considerable hurdle. This challenge stems from the initial formation of δ-FAPbI3 , a more energetically stable phase than the desired black α-phase, during film deposition. This disrupts the heterogeneous nucleation of α-FAPbI3 , causing the formation of mixed phases and defects. To this end, polarity engineering using molecular additives, specifically ((methyl-sulfonyl)phenyl)ethylamines (MSPEs) are introduced. The findings reveal that the interaction of PbI2 -MSPEs-FAI intermediates is enhanced with the increased polarity of MSPEs, which in turn expedites the nucleation of α-FAPbI3 . This leads to the development of high-quality α-FAPbI3 films, characterized by vertical crystal orientation and reduced residual stresses. Additionally, the increased dipole moment of MSPE at perovskite grain boundaries attenuates Coulomb attractions among charged defects and screens carrier capture process, thereby diminishing non-radiative recombination. Utilizing these mechanisms, PSCs treated with highly polar 2-(4-MSPE) achieve an impressive PCE of 25.2% in small-area devices and 20.5% in large-area perovskite solar modules (PSMs) with an active area of 70 cm2 . These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy in achieving controllable crystallization of α-FAPbI3 , paving the way for scalable-production of high-efficiency PSMs.

Varying effects of tree cover on relationships between satellite-observed vegetation greenup date and spring temperature across Eurasian boreal forests

Earth observation satellites have facilitated the quantification of how vegetation phenology responds to climate warming on large scales. However, satellite image pixels may contain a mixture of multiple vegetation types or species with diverse phenological responses to climate variability. It is unclear how these mixed pixels affect the statistical relationships between satellite-derived vegetation phenology and climate factors. Here, we aim to investigate the impacts of percent tree cover (PTC), a measure of mixed pixel, on the statistical relationships between satellite-derived vegetation greenup date (GUD) and spring air temperature across Eurasian boreal forests at a 0.05° spatial resolution. We estimated GUD using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) time series data. The responses of GUD to interannual variation in spring temperature (April to May) during 2001-2020 were characterized by correlation coefficient (RTAM) and sensitivity (STAM). We then evaluated the local impacts of PTC on spatial variations in RTAM and STAM using partial correlation analysis through spatial moving windows. Our results indicate that, for most areas, forests with higher PTC were associated with stronger RTAM and STAM. Moreover, PTC had stronger local impacts on RTAM and STAM than mean annual temperature and temperature seasonality for 37.3% and 27.4% of the moving windows, respectively. These impacts were spatially varying and different among forest types. Specifically, deciduous broadleaf forests and deciduous needleleaf forests tend to have a higher proportion of these impacts compared to other forest types. Our findings demonstrate the nonnegligible effects of PTC on the statistical responses of GUD to temperature variability at coarse spatial resolution (0.05°) across Eurasian boreal forests.

Dynamic covalent polymer engineering for stable and self-healing perovskite solar cells

Perovskite films are susceptible to degradation during their service period due to their weak mechanical properties. Acylhydrazone-bonded waterborne polyurethane (Ab-WPU) was employed as dynamic covalent polymer engineering to develop self-healing perovskite solar cells (SHPSCs). Ab-WPU enhances the crystallinity of the perovskite film, passivates the defects of the perovskite film through functional groups, and demonstrates promising flexibility and mild temperature self-healing properties of SHPSCs. The champion efficiency of SHPSCs on rigid and flexible substrates reaches 24.2% and 21.27% respectively. The moisture and heat stability of devices were improved. After 1000 bending cycles, the Ab-WPU-modified flexible device can be restored to an efficiency of over 95% of its original efficiency by heating to 60 °C. This is because the dynamic acylhydrazone bond can be activated to repair perovskite film defects at a mild temperature of 60 °C as evidenced by in situ AFM studies. This strategy provides an effective pathway for dynamic self-healing materials in PSCs under operational conditions.

Migrasome: a new functional extracellular vesicle

Migrasome is a novel cellular organelle produced during cell migration, and its biogenesis depends on the migration process. It is generated in a variety of cells such as immune cells, metastatic tumor cells, other special functional cells like podocytes and cells in developing organisms. It plays important roles in various fields especially in the information exchange between cells. The discovery of migrasome, as an important supplement to the extracellular vesicle system, provides new mechanisms and targets for comprehending various biological or pathological processes. In this article, we will review the discovery, structure, distribution, detection, biogenesis, and removal of migrasomes and mainly focus on summarizing its biological functions in cell-to-cell communication, homeostatic maintenance, embryonic development and multiple diseases. This review also creates prospects for the possible research directions and clinical applications of migrasomes in the future.

Ultra Robust and Highly Efficient Flexible Organic Solar Cells with Over 18 % Efficiency Realized by Incorporating a Linker Dimerized Acceptor

The wearable application of flexible organic solar cells (f-OSCs) necessitates high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and mechanical robustness. However, photoactive films based on efficient non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) are typically brittle, leading to poor mechanical stability in devices. In this study, we achieved a remarkable PCE of 18.06 % in f-OSCs while maintaining ultrahigh mechanical robustness (with a crack-onset strain (COS) of higher than 11 %) by incorporating a linker dimerized acceptor (DOY-TVT). Compared to binary blends, ternary systems exhibit reduced non-radiative recombination, suppressed crystallization and diffusion of NF-SMAs, and improved load distribution across the chain networks, enabling the dissipation of the load energy. Thus, the ternary f-OSCs developed in this study achieved, high PCE and stability, surpassing binary OSCs. Moreover, the developed f-OSCs retained 97 % of the initial PCE even after 3000 bending cycles, indicating excellent mechanical stability (9.1 % higher than binary systems). Furthermore, the rigid device with inverted structure based on the optimal active layer exhibited a substantial increase in efficiency retention, with 89.6 % after 865 h at 85 °C and 93 % after more than 1300 h of shelf storage at 25 °C. These findings highlight the potential of the linker oligomer acceptor for realizing high-performing f-OSCs with ultrahigh mechanical robustness.

Predictive value of total ischaemic time and T1 mapping after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

AIM

To investigate the predictive value of ischaemic time and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) T1 mapping in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 127 patients with STEMI treated by primary PCI were studied. All patients underwent CMRI with native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) measurement, 61 of whom also had 4-month follow-up data. The total ischaemic (symptom onset to balloon, S2B) time expressed in minutes was recorded. CMRI cine, T1 mapping, and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) images were analysed to evaluate left ventricular (LV) function, T1 value, ECV, and myocardial infract (MI) scar characteristics, respectively. The correlation between S2B time and T1 mapping was evaluated. The predictive values of S2B time and T1 mapping for large final infarct size were estimated.

RESULTS

The incidence of microvascular obstruction (MVO) increased with the prolongation of ischaemia time. Regardless of MVO or not, ECV in myocardial infarction (ECVMI) was significantly correlated with S2B time (r=0.61, p<0.001), while native T1 in MI (T1MI) was not (r=-0.19, p=0.029). In the 4-month follow-up, native T1MI was improved (1385.1 ± 90.4 versus 1288.6 ± 74 ms, p<0.001). Furthermore, ECVMI was independently associated with final larger infarct size (AUC = 0.89, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.81-0.98, p<0.001) in multivariable regression analysis.

CONCLUSION

ECVMI was correlated with total ischaemic time and was an independent predictor of final larger infarct size.

Changes in the structure and function of the left ventricle in patients with gout: A study based on three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography

PURPOSE

Studies have shown that gout can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (3D-STE), a sensitive imaging technology, enables the detection of subtle myocardial dysfunctions. Our aim is to evaluate the left ventricular (LV) functions in patients with gout using 3D-STE.

METHODS

80 subjects: 40 with gout and 40 as normal controls were involved. We obtained and analyzed these parameters from the dynamic images of a 3D full-volume dataset: global longitudinal strain (GLS), global circumferential strain (GCS), global radial strain (GRS), Twist, 16-segmental time-to-peak longitudinal strain (TTP) and systolic dyssynchrony index (SDI)besides other relevant parameters.

RESULTS

Compared with the normal group, gout patients were more likely to have left ventricular remodeling. The patients with gout showed decreased Em, increased E/Em and larger volume index of the left atrium (LAVI) indicating reduced diastolic function. The peak GLS (-17.42 ± 2.02 vs. -22.40 ± 2.57, P < 0.001), GCS (-27.04 ± 3.75 vs. -34.85 ± 4.99, P < 0.001), GRS (38.22 ± 4.28 vs. 46.15 ± 5.17, P < 0.001), and Twist (15.18 ± 5.45 vs. 19.02 ± 5.29, P = 0.015) were significantly lower in patients with gout than in healthy participants. The SDI (5.57 ± 1.46 vs. 4.91 ± 1.19, P = 0.016) was significantly increased in patients with gout compared with normal controls. There was no significant between-group difference in TTP (P = 0.43). The systolic GLS, GRS and GCS peak values increased gradually from the base to the apex, with the lowest values in the basal segment in patients with gout. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed among these strains GLS has the largest area under the curve (AUC: 0.93, P < 0.001), the cutoff value of -18.97% with a sensitivity and specificity of 80.0% and 92.0%, respectively, for differentiating two groups. A multivariate linear regression analysis shows that the relationship between gout and strain parameters including GLS, GRS, and GCS is statistically significant (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Although patients with gout having a normal ejection fraction, structural remodeling of the left ventricle and subclinical LV deformation may occur. 3D-STE can detect subtle cardiac dysfunctions in patients with gout at an early stage.

A Deformable Additive on Defects Passivation and Phase Segregation Inhibition Enables the Efficiency of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells over 24

The defects and phase segregation in perovskite will significantly reduce the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, a deformable coumarin is employed as a multifunctional additive for formamidinium-cesium (FA-Cs) perovskite. During the annealing process of perovskite, the partial decomposition of coumarin passivates the Pb2+ , iodine, and organic cation defects. Additionally, coumarin can affect colloidal size distributions, resulting in relatively large grain size and good crystallinity of target perovskite film. Hence, the carrier extraction/transport can be promoted, trap-assisted recombination is reduced, and energy levels are optimized in target perovskite films. Furthermore, the coumarin treatment can significantly release residual stress. As a result, the champion power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 23.18% and 24.14% are obtained for Br-rich (FA0.88 Cs0.12 PbI2.64 Br0.36 ) and Br-poor (FA0.96 Cs0.04 PbI2.8 Br0.12 ) based devices, respectively. The flexible PSCs based on Br-poor perovskite exhibit an excellent PCE of 23.13%, one of the highest values for flexible PSCs reported to date. Due to the inhibition of phase segregation, the target devices exhibit excellent thermal and light stability. This work provides new insights into the additive engineering of passivating defects, stress relief, and inhibition of phase segregation of perovskite films, offering a reliable method to develop state-of-the-art solar cells.

Pioneering research on blue "hot exciton" polymers and their application in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes

An innovative novel category of polymeric hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) blue materials prepared via solution processing has yet to be reported. This study introduces three polymers, namely PZ1, PZ2, and PZ3, incorporating donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structures with carbazole functioning as the donor and benzophenone as the acceptor. To regulate the luminescence mechanism and conjugation length, carbonyl and alkyl chains are strategically inserted into the backbone. Theoretical calculation and transient absorption spectroscopy illustrate that the robust spin-orbit coupling between high-lying singlet excited states (Sm: m ⩽ 4) and triplet excited states (Tn: n ⩽ 7) of the polymers hastens and significantly heightens the efficiency of reverse intersystem crossing processes from Tn states. Furthermore, the existence of multiple degenerated frontier molecular orbits and significant overlaps between Tn and Sm states give rise to added radiative pathways that boost the radiative rate. This study marks a fundamental and initial manifestation of HLCT materials within the polymer field and provides a new avenue for the design of highly efficient polymeric emitters.

NRF1-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis antagonizes innate antiviral immunity

Mitochondrial biogenesis is the process of generating new mitochondria to maintain cellular homeostasis. Here, we report that viruses exploit mitochondrial biogenesis to antagonize innate antiviral immunity. We found that nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF1), a vital transcriptional factor involved in nuclear-mitochondrial interactions, is essential for RNA (VSV) or DNA (HSV-1) virus-induced mitochondrial biogenesis. NRF1 deficiency resulted in enhanced innate immunity, a diminished viral load, and morbidity in mice. Mechanistically, the inhibition of NRF1-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis aggravated virus-induced mitochondrial damage, promoted the release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), increased the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), and activated the innate immune response. Notably, virus-activated kinase TBK1 phosphorylated NRF1 at Ser318 and thereby triggered the inactivation of the NRF1-TFAM axis during HSV-1 infection. A knock-in (KI) strategy that mimicked TBK1-NRF1 signaling revealed that interrupting the TBK1-NRF1 connection ablated mtDNA release and thereby attenuated the HSV-1-induced innate antiviral response. Our study reveals a previously unidentified antiviral mechanism that utilizes a NRF1-mediated negative feedback loop to modulate mitochondrial biogenesis and antagonize innate immune response.

[Current status and update of infantile hemangioma in diagnosis and therapy]

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are benign vascular tumors commonly observed in children. It is important to familiar with the characteristic features of hemangioma before diagnosis. Lesions located special position including periorbital and beard region, segmental hemangioma related PHACE syndrome and LUMBAR syndrome, hepatic hemangioma and related possible risks should be recognized. Early evaluation and assessment of risk grades should be done as early as possible before proliferation phase, so as to choosing the optimal treatment opportunity and scheme. β-blockers are the mainstay of therapy for moderate-to-high risk hemangiomas nowadays. Early initiation of treatment can prevent adverse complications and achieve the best outcome. During the diagnosis and treatment of infantile hemangioma, it emphasizes updating of the concept of naming and classification, treatment timing control and therapeutic scheme selection. Standardized clinical diagnosis and treatment should be promoted currently.

First Dark Matter Search Results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9  GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36  GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48}  cm at the 90% confidence level.

Surface Structure Analysis and Formaldehyde Removal Mechanism of Lotus Shell Biochar: An Experimental and Theoretical Perspective

The adsorption of gaseous HCHO by raw lotus shell biochar carbonized at 500, 700, and 900 °C from the perspective of its internal crystal structure and surface functional groups was investigated by an integrated approach of experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that lotus shell biochar carbonized at 700 °C had the best adsorption effect at a HCHO concentration of 10.50 ± 0.30 mg/m³, with an adsorption removal rate of 87.64%. The HCHO removal efficiency by lotus shell biochar carbonized at 500 and 900 °C was determined to be 80.96 and 83.07%, respectively. The HCHO adsorption on lotus shell biochar carbonized at 700 °C conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and was predominantly controlled by chemical adsorption. The Langmuir isotherm was the underlying mechanism for the monomolecular layer adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.329 mg/g. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the adsorption of HCHO on the surface of CaCO₃ and KCl in lotus shell biochar carbonized at 700 °C was a chemical adsorption process, with adsorption energies ranging from -64.375 to -87.554 kJ/mol. The strong interaction between HCHO and the surface was attributed to the electron transfer from HCHO to the surface, facilitated by metal atoms (Ca or K) and the oxygen atoms of HCHO. The carboxyl group on the surface of lotus shell biochar carbonized at 700 °C was identified as the key functional group responsible for HCHO adsorption. This study advanced our understanding of the environmental functions of inorganic crystals and surface functional groups in raw biochar and will enable the further development of biochar materials in environmental applications.

Human activities and species biological traits drive the long-term persistence of old trees in human-dominated landscapes

Old trees have many ecological and socio-cultural values. However, knowledge of the factors influencing their long-term persistence in human-dominated landscapes is limited. Here, using an extensive database (nearly 1.8 million individual old trees belonging to 1,580 species) from China, we identified which species were most likely to persist as old trees in human-dominated landscapes and where they were most likely to occur. We found that species with greater potential height, smaller leaf size and diverse human utilization attributes had the highest probability of long-term persistence. The persistence probabilities of human-associated species (taxa with diverse human utilization attributes) were relatively high in intensively cultivated areas. Conversely, the persistence probabilities of spontaneous species (taxa with no human utilization attributes and which are not cultivated) were relatively high in mountainous areas or regions inhabited by ethnic minorities. The distinctly different geographic patterns of persistence probabilities of the two groups of species were related to their dissimilar responses to heterogeneous human activities and site conditions. A small number of human-associated species dominated the current cohort of old trees, while most spontaneous species were rare and endemic. Our study revealed the potential impacts of human activities on the long-term persistence of trees and the associated shifts in species composition in human-dominated landscapes.

Improved Measurement of the Evolution of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

Reactor neutrino experiments play a crucial role in advancing our knowledge of neutrinos. In this Letter, the evolution of the flux and spectrum as a function of the reactor isotopic content is reported in terms of the inverse-beta-decay yield at Daya Bay with 1958 days of data and improved systematic uncertainties. These measurements are compared with two signature model predictions: the Huber-Mueller model based on the conversion method and the SM2018 model based on the summation method. The measured average flux and spectrum, as well as the flux evolution with the ^{239}Pu isotopic fraction, are inconsistent with the predictions of the Huber-Mueller model. In contrast, the SM2018 model is shown to agree with the average flux and its evolution but fails to describe the energy spectrum. Altering the predicted inverse-beta-decay spectrum from ^{239}Pu fission does not improve the agreement with the measurement for either model. The models can be brought into better agreement with the measurements if either the predicted spectrum due to ^{235}U fission is changed or the predicted ^{235}U, ^{238}U, ^{239}Pu, and ^{241}Pu spectra are changed in equal measure.

Noninvasive prediction of node-positive breast cancer response to presurgical neoadjuvant chemotherapy therapy based on machine learning of axillary lymph node ultrasound

OBJECTIVES

To explore an optimal model to predict the response of patients with axillary lymph node (ALN) positive breast cancer to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) with machine learning using clinical and ultrasound-based radiomic features.

METHODS

In this study, 1014 patients with ALN-positive breast cancer confirmed by histological examination and received preoperative NAC in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University (QUH) and Qingdao Municipal Hospital (QMH) were included. Finally, 444 participants from QUH were divided into the training cohort (n = 310) and validation cohort (n = 134) based on the date of ultrasound examination. 81 participants from QMH were used to evaluate the external generalizability of our prediction models. A total of 1032 radiomic features of each ALN ultrasound image were extracted and used to establish the prediction models. The clinical model, radiomics model, and radiomics nomogram with clinical factors (RNWCF) were built. The performance of the models was assessed with respect to discrimination and clinical usefulness.

RESULTS

Although the radiomics model did not show better predictive efficacy than the clinical model, the RNWCF showed favorable predictive efficacy in the training cohort (AUC, 0.855; 95% CI 0.817-0.893), the validation cohort (AUC, 0.882; 95% CI 0.834-0.928), and the external test cohort (AUC, 0.858; 95% CI 0.782-0.921) compared with the clinical factor model and radiomics model.

CONCLUSIONS

The RNWCF, a noninvasive, preoperative prediction tool that incorporates a combination of clinical and radiomics features, showed favorable predictive efficacy for the response of node-positive breast cancer to NAC. Therefore, the RNWCF could serve as a potential noninvasive approach to assist personalized treatment strategies, guide ALN management, avoiding unnecessary ALND.

Clinical characteristics and prognostic analysis of SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer

PURPOSE

To improve the understanding of special types of tumors, we summarized and analyzed the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer (SMARCA4-dNSCLC).

METHODS

We selected 105 patients with SMARCA4-dNSCLC and 221 patients with SMARCA4-intact non-small cell lung cancer (SMARCA4-iNSCLC) by performing immunohistochemical analysis of 1520 NSCLC samples, and we assessed the patients' clinicopathological features and survival state.

RESULTS

(1) SMARCA4-dNSCLC was significantly associated with older age, male sex, smoking history, larger invasive tumor size, higher tumor proliferation index (Ki-67), more adrenal metastases, more lymph node metastases, and few EGFR mutations (p < 0.05). The tumors were mostly negative for thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1), CD34, and p40 and positive for cytokeratin 7 (CK7) in immunohistochemistry (IHC). Nineteen SMARCA4-dNSCLC patients mostly had TP53, SMARCA4, and LRP1B mutations, and 48% of them had SMARCA4 frameshift mutations. SMARCA4-dNSCLC patients have a worse prognosis than SMARCA4-iNSCLC patients (HR: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.17-0.45). The overall survival (OS) of patients with stage III SMARCA4-dNSCLC was worse than that of patients with SMARCA4-iNSCLC, and the OS of stage IV SMARCA4-dNSCLC patients was also worse than that of SMARCA4-iNSCLC patients (p < 0.01). (2) Multivariate regression analysis showed that sex (HR: 4.12; 95% CI: 1.03-16.39) and smoking history (HR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.04-5.02) had significant effects on the survival time of SMARCA4-dNSCLC patients. In SMARCA4-dNSCLC patients without distant metastases (stage I-III), patients with stage N2 or N3 lymph node metastases (HR: 6.35; 95% CI: 1.07-37.47) had a poor prognosis. Among patients with SMARCA4-dNSCLC who were treated and had distant metastases (stage IV), male patients and patients treated with immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy showed a longer median overall survival (mOS).

CONCLUSION

SMARCA4-dNSCLC has unique clinicopathological features and a shorter survival prognosis than SMARCA4-iNSCLC. The efficacy of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy needs to be observed for longer periods.

Influencing factors of early dramatic recovery of neurological function after intravenous thrombolysis in patients with branch atheromatous disease

BACKGROUND

Intravenous thrombolysis can significantly improve the neurological function of patients with acute ischemic stroke. However, the expected early dramatic recovery (EDR) of neurological function after thrombolysis is not achieved in some patients with branch atheromatous disease (BAD). Here we evaluated the factors associated with EDR after thrombolysis in BAD patients.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective study on 580 consecutive BAD patients. All patients met the diagnostic criteria of BAD and received intravenous recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA). EDR was defined when the improvement of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score was >8 points within 2 or 24 hours after rt-PA, or the total NIHSS score was 0 or 1. The factors associated with EDR were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

Among 580 patients, the incidence of EDR was 35.2% (204 cases). Compared with patients without EDR, patients with EDR had lower incidence of diabetes (15.7% vs 29.3%, P < .001), lower NIHSS scores at 2 and 24 hours after rt-PA (P < .001), less cerebral hemorrhage (0% vs 5.3%, P = .001), and shorter onset to treatment time (OTT) (P < .001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis in propensity score-matched cohort showed that EDR was associated with OTT (adjusted OR = 0.994; 95% CI, 0.989-0.999) and NIHSS score after rt-PA (adjusted OR = 0.768; 95% CI, 0.663-0.890). Notably, diabetes (adjusted OR = 0.477, 95% CI, 0.234-0.972) was an independent factor related to EDR of neurological function in BAD patients. In the subgroup analysis, a lower incidence of diabetes (adjusted OR = 0.205, 95% CI: 0.059-0.714, P = .013) and a lower NIHSS score after thrombolysis in patients with paramedian pontine infarction (adjusted OR = 0.809, 95% CI: 0.656-0.997, P = .047) were significantly associated with EDR.

CONCLUSION

Diabetes is not conducive to EDR of neurological function in patients with BAD, especially in patients with paramedian pontine infraction. Low NIHSS score and short OTT after thrombolysis may be closely related to EDR after intravenous thrombolysis.

A noncanonical autophagy function of ATG9A for Golgi integrity and dynamics

In mammalian cells, the Golgi apparatus serves as the central hub for membrane trafficking. Notably, the membrane trafficking and Golgi integrity are tightly regulated by reversible post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation, phosphorylation and ubiquitination. Nonetheless, how the Golgi apparatus responses to stress to ensure appropriate membrane assembly and distribution of cargo is poorly understood. The Golgi resident protein ATG9A is the only multi-spanning membrane protein in the ATG family and has been demonstrated to traffic through the plasma membrane, endosomes and Golgi to deliver materials for the initiation of macroautophagy/autophagy. Our recent work reveals a noncanonical function of ATG9A for Golgi dynamics and identifies a pathway for sensing Golgi stress via the MARCHF9-ATG9A axis.

Boosting Red Luminescence of Mn4+ in Tantalum Heptafluoride Based on an Ab Initio-Facilitated Sensitizer and Hydrophobic Surface Modification

A narrow-band red-light component is critical to establish high color rendition and a wide color gamut of phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). In this sense, Mn⁴⁺-doped K₂SiF₆ fluoride is the most successful material that has been commercialized. As with K₂SiF₆:Mn⁴⁺ phosphors, Mn⁴⁺-doped tantalum heptafluoride (K₂TaF₇:Mn⁴⁺) fulfills a similar luminescence behavior and has been brought in a promising narrow-band red phosphor. But the limited brightness and low moisture-resistant performances have inevitably blocked its practical application. Herein, we employed the density functional theory (DFT)-based ab initio estimation approach to quickly identify the proper sensitizer by systematically investigating the electronic-band coupling between the several possible sensitizers (Rb, Hf, Zr, Sn, Nb, and Mo) and the luminescent center (Mn). Combined with experimental results, Mo was demonstrated to be the optimal sensitizer, which resulted in a 60% enhancement of the emission. On the side, the moisture sensitivity has been effectively improved via grafting the hydrophobic octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODTMS) layer on the phosphor surface. Through employing the K₂TaF₇:Mn⁴⁺,Mo⁶⁺@ODTMS composite as a red component, warm WLEDs with good performance were achieved with a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4352 K, a luminous efficacy (LE) of 90.1 lm/W, and a color rendering index (Ra) of 83.4. In addition, a wide color gamut reaching up to 102.8% of the NTSC 1953 value could be realized. Aging tests at 85 °C and 85% humidity for 120 h on this device manifested that the ODTMS-modified phosphor had much better moisture stability than that of the unmodified one. These studies provided viable tools for optimizing Mn⁴⁺ luminescence in fluoride hosts.

Precision Measurement of Reactor Antineutrino Oscillation at Kilometer-Scale Baselines by Daya Bay

We present a new determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} and the mass-squared difference Δm_{32}^{2} using a final sample of 5.55×10^{6} inverse beta-decay (IBD) candidates with the final-state neutron captured on gadolinium. This sample is selected from the complete dataset obtained by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in 3158 days of operation. Compared to the previous Daya Bay results, selection of IBD candidates has been optimized, energy calibration refined, and treatment of backgrounds further improved. The resulting oscillation parameters are sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.0851±0.0024, Δm_{32}^{2}=(2.466±0.060)×10^{-3}  eV^{2} for the normal mass ordering or Δm_{32}^{2}=-(2.571±0.060)×10^{-3}  eV^{2} for the inverted mass ordering.

Expression patterns and influence of the two-component system in Vibrio parahaemolyticus of different genotypes

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a foodborne pathogen that threatens global food security and human health. The two-component system (TCS) is a primary method for bacteria self-regulate and adapt to the environment. Previous studies have shown that V. parahaemolyticus has four hemolytic genotypes with diverse biological phenotypes and environmental adaptability, but the mechanism is unclear. In this study, we investigated TCS expression patterns in V. parahaemolyticus with different genotypes for the first time and explored the differences in TCS between strains. The results showed similarities in the TCS expression pattern between VPC17 (tdh+/trh-) and VPC44 (tdh-/trh-), while VPC85(tdh-/trh+) had the least similar TCS expression pattern to the other three strains. Analysis of biological information revealed that different regulations of C4 dicarboxylate transport, tetrathionate uptake, antibiotic resistance, and flagellar synthesis involved in the TCS might influence strains' growth, antibiotic resistance, biofilm, and virulence. The different TCS regulatory abilities of strains might be one of the reasons for diverse biological characteristics and different environmental adaptations. This work provides a theoretical basis and a new research direction for the strain variability of V. parahaemolyticus.

Saturated fatty acids increase LPI to reduce FUNDC1 dimerization and stability and mitochondrial function

Ectopic lipid deposition and mitochondrial dysfunction are common etiologies of obesity and metabolic disorders. Excessive dietary uptake of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) causes mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic disorders, while unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) counterbalance these detrimental effects. It remains elusive how SFAs and UFAs differentially signal toward mitochondria for mitochondrial performance. We report here that saturated dietary fatty acids such as palmitic acid (PA), but not unsaturated oleic acid (OA), increase lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI) production to impact on the stability of the mitophagy receptor FUNDC1 and on mitochondrial quality. Mechanistically, PA shifts FUNDC1 from dimer to monomer via enhanced production of LPI. Monomeric FUNDC1 shows increased acetylation at K104 due to dissociation of HDAC3 and increased interaction with Tip60. Acetylated FUNDC1 can be further ubiquitinated by MARCH5 for proteasomal degradation. Conversely, OA antagonizes PA-induced accumulation of LPI, and FUNDC1 monomerization and degradation. A fructose-, palmitate-, and cholesterol-enriched (FPC) diet also affects FUNDC1 dimerization and promotes its degradation in a non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) mouse model. We thus uncover a signaling pathway that orchestrates lipid metabolism with mitochondrial quality.

Approaching the Fill Factor Limit in Dopant-Free Hole Transporting Layer-Based All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

As an important part of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), hole transporting layer (HTL) has a critical impact on the performance and stability of the devices. In an attempt to alleviate the moisture and thermal stability issues from the commonly used HTL Spiro-OMeTAD with dopant, it is urgent to develop novel HTLs with high stability. In this study, a new class of polymers D18 and D18-Cl are applied as undoped HTL for CsPbI₂Br-based PSCs. In addition to the excellent hole transporting properties, we unveil that D18 and D18-Cl with larger thermal expansion coefficient than that of CsPbI₂Br could impose a compressive stress onto the CsPbI₂Br film upon thermal treatment, which could release the residual tensile stress in the film. As a result, the efficiency of CsPbI₂Br-based PSCs with D18-Cl as HTL reaches 16.73%, and the fill factor (FF) exceeds 85%, which is one of the highest FF records for the conventional-structured device to date. The devices also show impressive thermal stability with over 80% of the initial PCE retained after 85 °C heating for 1500 h.

Key domains and residues of the receptor MRGPRX1 recognizing the peptide ligand BAM8-22

Mas-related G protein-coupled receptors (Mrgprs) are a newly discovered class of G protein-coupled receptors consisting of more than 50 members in recent years. MRGPRX1 can be activated by bovine adrenal medulla peptide 8-22 (BAM8-22), triggering Ca²⁺ influx and then causing pain and itch. It is very important for the discovery of analgesic and antipruritic drugs to elucidate the molecular mechanism of MRGPRX1 recognizing BAM8-22. Here, we identified the functional domains and residues of the receptor MRGPRX1 activating BAM8-22 through molecular model, mutation and living cell calcium imaging. The molecular docking predicted that BAM8-22 interacted with N-terminal, TM4, TM5, TM6 and ECL3 of MRGPRX1. Both ECL3 and TM6 domains were further revealed to play a critical role in the BAM8-22-induced MRGPRX1 activation, whereas TM3 region performed a secondary function. Moreover, the mutation F237A of MRGPRX1 completely lost the activation ability of BAM8-22. These results were consistent with the cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of MRGPRX1-G_αq in complex with BAM8-22 reported most recently. Taken together, our work shows insights into the molecular mechanism of the interaction between the receptor MRGPRX1 and the peptide agonist BAM8-22, and will also provide some valuable clues for the design of analgesic and antipruritic drugs targeting MRGPRX1.

Effect of low temperature on the resistance of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 to acid electrolyzed water

Low temperature can affect the resistance of pathogenic bacteria to other external stress. The present study was envisaged to assess the tolerance of L. monocytogenes and E. coli O157:H7 to acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) under low temperature stress. AEW treatment caused a damage to cell membrane of the pathogenic bacteria, which led to protein leakage and DNA damage. Compared with the pathogenic bacteria cultured at 37 °C (pure culture), the L. monocytogenes and E. coli O157:H7 cells cultivated at low temperature presented a less damage and had a higher survival rate when exposed to AEW. Therefore, 4 °C or 10 °C grown bacteria were less susceptible to AEW than those cultured at 37 °C. And this phenomenon was verified when AEW was used to treat the pathogenic bacteria inoculated in salmon. In addition, transcriptomic sequencing technology (RNA-seq) was used to reveal the mechanism of AEW tolerance of L. monocytogenes under low temperature stress. Transcriptomic analysis showed the expression of the cold shock protein, regulation of DNA-templated transcription, ribosome pathway, phosphotransferase system (PTS), bacteria chemotaxis, SOS response and DNA repair were involved in the resistance of L. monocytogenes to AEW. We speculated that the direct modulation of the expression of cold shock protein CspD, the indirect effect on the expression of cspD by inhibiting the expression of Crp/Fnr family transcriptional regulator or enhancing the level of cAMP by regulating PTS could reduce the resistance of L. monocytogenes cultivated at 4 °C to AEW. Our study contributes to solving the problem of the reduced bacteriostatic effect in cold storage environment.

Comparison between the stem and leaf photosynthetic productivity in Eucalyptus urophylla plantations with different age

We developed a more realistic modeling framework by integrating stem photosynthesis into the canopy carbon assimilation model to compare the photosynthetic productivity between the stem and leaf of Eucalyptus urophylla plantations. Stems of Eucalyptus species with smooth outer bark have photosynthetic green tissue that can recycle internal stem CO₂. However, the potential contribution of stem photosynthesis to forest productivity has not previously been adequately quantified, and we also do not know how it compares to leaf photosynthetic productivity. To assist in addressing this knowledge gap, we conducted field surveys in Eucalyptus urophylla plantations of different ages and developed a more realistic modeling framework by integrating stem photosynthesis into the existing canopy carbon assimilation model. We calculated the proportion of tree stems shaded by neighboring tree trunks based on Poisson spatial point process. Under the stand density of 2000 trees per hectare, the light absorption area of tree trunks of 2-year-old and 7-year-old E. urophylla plantations were 0.11 (± 0.15) and 0.35 (± 0.12) m² stem m^-2 land, the stem photosynthetic productivity (GPP_stem) was 0.72 (± 0.45) and 1.81 (± 1.12) mol C m^-2 month^-1, and the ratios of GPP_stem to leaf photosynthetic productivity (GPP_leaf) were 5.10 and 8.17% for 2- and 7-year-old plantations, respectively. Overall, this study presents the feasibility of incorporating stem photosynthesis into the productivity prediction of E. urophylla plantations by developing the stem light absorption model.

Rational Design of Ferroelectric 2D Perovskite for Improving the Efficiency of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells Over 23

Despite the great progress of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs), it still faces several challenges during the homogeneous fabrication of high-quality perovskite thin films, and overcoming the insufficient exciton dissociation. To the ends, we rationally design the ferroelectric two-dimensional (2D) perovskite based on pyridine heterocyclic ring as the organic interlayer. We uncover that incorporation of the ferroelectric 2D material into 3D perovskite induces an increased built-in electric field (BEF), which enhances the exciton dissociation efficiency in the device. Moreover, the 2D seeds could assist the 3D crystallization by forming more homogeneous and highly-oriented perovskite crystals. As a result, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 23 % has been achieved by the f-PSCs with outstanding ambient stability. Moreover, the piezo/ferroelectric 2D perovskite intrigues a decreased hole transport barriers at the ITO/perovskite interface under tensile stress, which opens new possibilities for developing highly-efficient f-PSCs.

Dynamic changes in protein concentrations of keratins in crop milk and related gene expression in pigeon crops during different incubation and chick rearing stages

1. The objective of this study was to examine the keratin composition of crop milk, the variation of epithelial thickness and keratin (K) gene expression in samples from young pigeon during incubation and chick rearing.2. Crop milk was collected from 1-, 3- and 5-day-old squab crops for keratin content analysis. Results showed that K4 accounted for the highest proportion of all detected keratins.3. In total, 42 pairs of adult pigeons were allocated to seven groups according to different stages to collect crop samples. Gene expression studies showed that the K3 gene expression was maximised at rearing Day 15 (15) and R1 in males and females, respectively. K6a gene level was the greatest at R15 in females, whereas it peaked at incubation Day 4 (I4) in males. The K12, K13, K23 and K80 gene levels were inhibited at the peak period of crop milk formation in comparison with I4. In females, K cochleal expression peaked at I10, whereas it was the greatest at R25 in males. K4 and K14 gene expression was the highest at I10 in females, while K4 and K14 were minimised at I17 and R7 in males, respectively. Gene expressions of K5, K8, K19 and K20 in males and K19 in females were maximised at R1. The K5, K20 and K75 gene levels in females peaked at R7. K75 and K8 expressions in males and females reached a maximum value at R25 and I17, respectively.4. The epithelial thickness of male and female crops reached their greatest levels at R1 and had the highest correlation with K19.5. These results emphasised the importance of keratinisation in crop milk formation, and different keratins probably play various roles during this period. The K19 was probably a marker for pigeon crop epithelium development. The sex of the parent pigeon affected keratin gene expression profiles.

Reversible Transformation and Distribution Determination of Diverse Pt Single-Atom Species

In single-atom catalysts (SACs), the complexity of the support anchoring sites creates a vast diversity of single-atom species with varied coordination environments. To date, the quantitative distribution of these diverse single-atom species in a given SAC has remained elusive. Recently, CeO₂-supported metal SACs have been extensively studied by modulating their local environments via numerous synthetic strategies. However, owing to the absence of a quantitative description, unraveling the site-specific reactivity and regulating their transformation remain challenging. Here, we show that two distinct Pt/CeO₂ SACs can be reversibly generated by oxidative and nonoxidative dispersions, which contain varied Pt₁O_n-Ce^δ+ single-atom species despite similar Pt charge states and coordination numbers. By means of Raman spectroscopy and computational studies, we semiquantitatively reveal the distribution of diverse Pt₁O_n-Ce^δ+ species in each specific SACs. Remarkably, the minority species of Pt₁O₄-Ce³⁺-O_v accounting for only 14.2% affords the highest site-specific reactivity for low-temperature CO oxidation among the other abundant counterparts, i.e., Pt₁O₄-Ce⁴⁺ and Pt₁O₆-Ce⁴⁺. The second nearest oxygen vacancy (O_v) not only acts synergistically with the nearby active metal sites to lower the reaction barrier but also facilitates the dynamic transformation from six-coordinated to four-coordinated sites during cyclic nonoxidative and oxidative dispersions. This work elucidates the quantitative distribution and dynamic transformation of varied single-atom species in a given SAC, offering a more intrinsic descriptor and quantitative measure to depict the inhomogeneity of SACs.

Impact of Coronary Artery Disease on The Outcomes of Catheter Ablation in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

INTRODUCTION

The objective of this study is to investigate the possible impact of coronary artery disease (CAD) on clinical outcomes of catheter ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

METHODS

Patients with AF who underwent coronary computed tomography and catheter ablation were enrolled. The presence of stenotic severity and plaque, characteristics of coronary arteries, clinical data, and adverse outcomes of catheter ablation were analysed.

RESULTS

A total of 243 patients were enrolled, 100 (41%) patients with CAD. The CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke or transient ischemic attack, vascular disease, age 65-74 years, and sex category) score of AF patients with CAD was significantly (P<0.001) higher than of those without CAD. Presence of stenotic artery and plaques increased significantly with increase of CHA2DS2-VASc score (P<0.05). There was no significant (P=0.342) difference in AF recurrence between patients with and without CAD (30% versus 24%). Age, AF type, duration of AF, heart failure, CHA2DS2-VASc score, left ventricular ejection fraction, and left atrial diameter were significantly (P<0.05) correlated with AF recurrence in univariant analysis. Multivariable analysis revealed that duration of AF (hazard ratio [HR] 1.769), heart failure (HR 1.821), and left atrial diameter (HR 1.487, P=0.022) remained significant independent predictors of AF recurrence. Patients with AF and concomitant CAD were significantly (P=0.030) associated with a worse outcome.

CONCLUSION

CAD concomitant with AF may be associated with a worse clinical outcome even though CAD does not significantly affect the risk of AF recurrence after ablation therapy.

Tetrahydroxy Stilbene Glucoside Alleviates Ischemic Stroke by Regulating Conformation-Dependent Intracellular Distribution of PKM2 for M2 Macrophage Polarization

Tetrahydroxy stilbene glucoside (TSG) is a bioactive ingredient with powerful anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. However, the detailed mechanisms concerning the neuroprotective effect of TSG are not fully understood. This study aims to address the molecular mechanism involved in the protective effects of TSG on murine ischemic stroke. We found that TSG meliorated the phenotypes of ischemic stroke in vivo, which was correlated with the increased percentage of infiltrated M2 macrophages in brain after stroke. Mechanistically, TSG regulated macrophage polarization by significantly downregulating the transcriptional levels of M1 marker genes (iNOS and IL-1β) but upregulating that of the M2 marker genes (arg-1 and IL-4) following lipopolysaccharide/interferon-γ stimulation. Consistently, TSG reversed the metabolic profiling of M1 macrophage toward the M2 status at intracellular energy levels. Surprisingly, the knockdown of an established metabolic enzyme pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) that is important for M1 switch in macrophages abolished the promotive effect of TSG on the M2 polarization. Further investigation revealed that TSG markedly downregulated the intracellular ratio of dimer/monomer to the tetramer of PKM2 without affecting its total protein expression, leading to a suppressed nuclear translocation of functioning PKM2 in macrophages for M1 differentiation. Taken together, we identified a novel mechanism for macrophage M2 polarization regulation by a small-molecule chemical that controls the quality (conformation) rather than the quantity (expression) of an intracellular M1-promoting metabolic enzyme, which offers a better understanding of the mechanisms of macrophage plasticity and has serious implication in translational strategies for the treatment of macrophage-mediated neurological diseases with natural bioactive products.

Preparation, characterization, and pharmacokinetics of rivaroxaban cocrystals with enhanced in vitro and in vivo properties in beagle dogs

Rivaroxaban (RIV) is a direct Factor Xa inhibitor anticoagulant, but the oral bioavailability of RIV is estimated to be only 60% due to its poor solubility. The aim of the present study was to improve the solubility and bioavailability of RIV. Five cocrystals—p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DBA), nicotinamide (NA), isonicotinamide (IA), and succinic acid (SA)—were used as cofomers and were successfully obtained and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. RIV-DBA and RIV-HBA cocrystals showed obvious improvements in solubility, dissolution (under sink conditions), and intrinsic dissolution rates versus RIV. Moreover, the dissolution of RIV-HBA, RIV-DBA, and RIV-SA cocrystals under non-sink conditions showed obvious “spring and parachute” patterns. The in vitro permeability levels in a Caco-2 cell model of RIV-DBA and RIV-IA cocrystals were significantly improved versus RIV. Pharmacokinetic studies in beagle dogs showed that RIV-DBA and RIV-HBA cocrystals had higher bioavailability than RIV. The enhancements in solubility and bioavailability indicate the potential of RIV cocrystals as a better candidate for the treatment of thrombosis versus RIV.

[Direct intraoperative two-step distraction and reduction for basilar invagination with atlantoaxial dislocation]

Objective: To assess the clinical impact of direct two-step distraction reduction (TSDR) for basilar invagination (BI) with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD). Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of patients who underwent TSDR and occipitocervical fusion in West China Hospital between October 2013 and March 2021. Depending on whether the preoperative decrease was greater than 50% on preoperative hyperextension X-rays, the patients were split into two groups. The neurological function [Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score], atlantodens interval (ADI), the distance of odontoid process beyond McRae Line (ML) and Wackenheim Line (WL), cervicomedullary angle (CMA), O-C₂ angle (OC2A), and complications incidence were compared between two groups preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: There were 12 men and 23 women among the 35 patients with BI and AAD, and the age ranged from 28 to 71 years, with an mean age of (52.0±13.4) years. In the preoperative reduction ≥50% group, there were 4 males and 9 females with an average age of (54.0±13.8) years; in the preoperative reduction <50% group, there were 8 males and 14 females with a mean age of (50.9±13.4) years. All the patients were followed-up for a mean time of (23.3±13.4) months. There was no significant difference in age, gender, bleeding, length of hospital stay and follow-up time between the two groups (all P>0.05). The JOA score, ADI, WL, ML and CMA of 35 patients were significantly improved when compared with those before operation (all P<0.05). The reduction degree of ADI, ML and WL was more than 80% in 31 cases (88.57%), 30 cases (85.71%) and 31 cases (88.57%), respectively. There was no significant difference in postoperative ADI, ML and WL between the two groups (all P>0.05). All patients had no incision infection, no loosening or breakage of the internal fixators. Dysphagia occurred in 3 patients, non-fusion happened in 1 patient, but no instability in X-ray of cervical dynamic position was found, no loosening or displacement occurred in internal fixators, and partial spontaneous fusion occurred between atlantoaxial lateral mass joints. Conclusions: For BI with AAD without atlantoaxial bony connection or serious atlantoaxial facet joint inclination, TSDR could obtain satisfactory reduction degree. The reduction degree on preoperative hyperextension X-ray doesn't affect the degree of intraoperative reduction.
