Abstract
Developing approaches to induce noncentrosymmetric (NCS) frameworks through atomic-scale structural optimizations is crucial due to the growing need for new ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, the first two new NCS pyridine carboxylates, ZnBr(C6H3.5FNO2)2 (1) and Cd(C6H3FNO2)2(H2O)2 (2), were successfully synthesized using centrosymmetric (CS) templates and rational structural reconstructions induced by different ionic radius. Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic system and feature metal-centered zero-dimensional (0D) isolated clusters. Substituting the [ZnO2N2O] pyramid in the CS pyridine carboxylate with the [ZnO2N2Br] pyramid in compound 1 breaks the centrality, leading to an NCS framework with a second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 1.7 × KH2PO4 (KDP). Introducing a larger Cd2+ cation results in a trans-to-cis transition of the [MO4N2] (M = Zn, Co, and Ni in CS templates, Cd in 2) octahedra, forming a wing-shaped asymmetric 0D cluster with an SHG response of 2.1 × KDP. These findings indicate an approach that can effectively induce NCS structures of 0D organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Abstract
Pyroelectric materials have been attracting significant attention due to their intrinsic and permanent polarization, where the induced polarization is not associated with specific conditions, such as ferroelectric phase transition, strain gradient, dopants, and electric field. Thus, these materials have great potential for wide applications in energy conversion. Here, we propose a new 3D porous borocarbonitride termed PH-BCN, which is composed of pentagonal motifs with intrinsic polarization along the [0001] direction. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that PH-BCN possesses a record high longitudinal electromechanical coupling coefficient with the value of k33 = 97.99%, a remarkably strong SHG response (χ(2)xzx(0) = χ(2)yzy(0) = χ(2)zxx(0) = χ(2)zyy(0) = -6.23 pm V-1 and χ(2)zzz(0) = 21.21 pm V-1), and a record high shift current value of 908.58 μA V-2 due to the intrinsic vertical polarization. This study expands the family of pentagon-based materials, and may open a new frontier in the design of high-performance pyroelectric materials as well.

Abstract
Structural asymmetry affecting the nonlinear optics (NLO) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is very important in fundamentals and applications but is still a challenge. Herein we develop a series of indium-porphyrinic framework (InTCPP) thin films and provide the first study on the coordination-induced symmetry breaking on their third-order NLO. The continuous and oriented InTCPP(H2) thin films were grown on quartz substrates and then postcoordinated with different cations (Fe2+ or Fe3+Cl-) in InTCPP(H2) (named InTCPP(Fe2+) and InTCPP(Fe3+Cl-)). The third-order NLO results reveal the Fe2+ and Fe3+Cl- coordinated InTCPP thin films have substantially enhanced NLO performance. Moreover, InTCPP(Fe3+Cl-) thin films cause symmetry breaking of microstructures, resulting in a 3-fold increase in the nonlinear absorption coefficient (up to 6.35 × 10-6 m/W) compared to InTCPP(Fe2+). This work not only develops a series of nonlinear optical MOF thin films but also provides new insight into symmetry breaking on MOFs for nonlinear optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
We herein report two asymmetric germanate crystals, KNbGe3 O9 and K3 Nb3 Ge2 O13 , with different structures and optical properties derived from divergent polymerized forms of GeO4 and NbO6 groups. Remarkably, K3 Nb3 Ge2 O13 achieved a rare combination of the strongest second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 17.5×KDP @ 1064 nm and the largest birefringence of 0.196 @ 546 nm in germanates. It features unique [Nb3 O12 ]∞ tubular chains constructed by circular Nb3 O15 tripolymers. Theoretical calculations reveal that the d-p interactions in the Nb3 O15 group are responsible for outstanding optical properties. This work emphasizes the significance of the polymerizable functional units in obtaining high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) and Deep-UV (DUV, λ<200 nm) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials play a significant role to convert the wavelength of laser for producing UV/DUV coherent light in the laser industry. The Al [Ne]3s2 3p1 atom with empty d orbitals can form sp3 , sp3 d, and sp3 d2 hybrid orbitals when bonding with O/F atoms, which leads to the construction of [AlOm Fn ] (m+n=4, 5, 6) units. Therein, aluminoborates have received intensive attention due to the effective structural and functional adjustment effects of the diverse Al-O/F units. Accordingly, numerous aluminoborates as candidates for the next generation of UV/DUV NLO materials were discovered. In this review, recently discovered aluminoborates are overviewed and analyzed, including their syntheses, crystal structure features, and second-order NLO performances. We aim to provide the latest progress and outlook on the crystal chemistry of aluminoborates and boost the finding of the next NLO candidates with high performances.

Abstract
Exploring significant ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is hindered by rigorous and contradictory requirements, especially, possessing a moderate optical birefringence to meet phase-matching (PM). Except for suitable birefringence, small chromatic dispersion is also crucial to blue-shift the PM wavelength. Here, the introduction of fluorinated tetrahedral boron-centred chromophore strategy was proposed to optimize the chromatic dispersion. Herein, [BF4]- unit with large HOMO-LUMO band gap was introduced to Na-B-O-F system and Na4B8O9F10 was designed and synthesized successfully for the first time. Na4B8O9F10 with optimized chromatic dispersion can achieve a short second harmonic generation PM wavelength of 240 nm with a relatively small birefringence (cal. 0.036@1064 nm). Notably, Na4B8O9F10 is the first acentric crystal with [BF4]- unit among reported metal-fluorooxoborate system, involving isolated [BF4]- and novel [B7O10F6]5- fundamental building blocks.

Abstract
Wide ultraviolet (UV) transparency, strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, and sufficient optical birefringence for phase-matching (PM) at short SHG wavelengths are vital for practical UV nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, simultaneously optimizing these properties is a major challenge, particularly for metal phosphates. Herein, we report a non-traditional π-conjugated cation-based UV NLO phosphate [C(NH2 )3 ]6 (PO4 )2 ⋅3 H2 O (GPO) with a short UV cutoff edge. GPO is SHG active at 1064 nm (3.8 × KH2 PO4 @ 1064 nm) and 532 nm (0.3 × β-BaB2 O4 @ 532 nm) and also possesses a significant birefringence (0.078 @ 546 nm) with a band gap >6.0 eV. The PM SHG capability of GPO can extend to 250 nm, indicating GPO is a promising UV solar-blind NLO material. Calculations and crystal structure analysis show that the rare coexistence of wide UV transparency, large SHG response, and optical anisotropy is due to the introduction of π-conjugated cations [C(NH2 )3 ]+ and their favorable arrangement with [PO4 ]3- anions.
