A Superstrong and Reversible Ionic Crystal‐Based Adhesive Inspired by Ice Adhesion

Step-growth Polymerization of Aziridines with Elemental Sulfur: Easy Access to Linear Polysulfides and Their Use as Recyclable Adhesives

The bulk radical polymerization of bis(aziridine) with molten elemental sulfur resulted in brittle, cross-linked polymers. However, when the bis(aziridine) was treated with elemental sulfur in the presence of an organobase, the ring-opening reaction of aziridine with oligosulfide anions occurred, leading to the formation of linear polymers by step-growth polymerization. These newly synthesized polymers possess repeating units containing a sulfonamide or amide functional moiety and oligosulfide bonds with an average sulfur segment of about two. A small molecular model reaction confirmed the nucleophilic addition reaction of elemental sulfur to aziridine. It was verified that S-S dynamic bond exchange takes place in the presence of an organic base within the linear chains. The mixture of the synthesized polysulfides with pyridine exhibits exceptional adhesive properties when applied to steel, and aluminum substrates. Notably, these prepared adhesives displayed good reusability due to the dynamic S-S exchange and complete recyclability due to their solution processability. This elemental sulfur-involved polymerization approach represents an innovative method for the synthesis of advanced sulfur-containing polymers, demonstrating the potential for various applications in adhesives and beyond.

Ultrastrong bonding, on-demand debonding, and easy re-bonding of non-sticking materials enabled by reversibly interlocked macromolecular networks-based Janus-like adhesive

Simultaneously gluing hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials is a highly desired but intractable task. Herein, we developed a facile strategy using reversibly interlocked macromolecular networks (ILNs) as an adhesive. As shown by the proof-of-concept assembly of glass/ILNs/fluoropolymer (i.e., a simplified version of a photovoltaic module), the sandwiched ILNs were stratified after hot-pressing owing to temporary decrosslinking enabled by the built-in reversible covalent bonds. The fragmented component networks were enriched near their respective thermodynamically favored substrates to form a Janus-like structure. Strong elaborate interfacial bespoke chemical bonds and mechanical interlocking were thus established accompanied by the reconstruction of ILNs after cooling, which cooperated with the robust cohesion of the core part of the ILNs resulting from topological entanglements and led to a record-high peeling strength of 64.86 N cm-1. Also, the ILN-based Janus-like adhesive possessed reversible recyclability, adhesivity and on-demand de-bondability. The molecular design detailed in this study serves as a guide for developing a high-performance smart adhesive that firmly bonds non-sticking materials. Compared with existing Janus adhesives, our ILNs-based adhesive not only shows extremely useful reversibility but also greatly simplifies the adhesion process with no surface treatment required.

Moisture-Wicking, Breathable, and Intrinsically Antibacterial Electronic Skin Based on Dual-Gradient Poly(ionic liquid) Nanofiber Membranes

Electronic skin can detect minute electrical potential changes in the human skin and represent the body's state, which is critical for medical diagnostics and human-computer interface development. On the other hand, sweat has a significant effect on the signal stability, comfort, and safety of electronic skin in a real-world application. In this study, by modifying the cation and anion of a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and employing a spinning process, a PIL-based multilayer nanofiber membrane (PIL membrane) electronic skin with a dual gradient is created. The PIL electronic skin is moisture-wicking and breathable due to the hydrophilicity and pore size-gradients. The intrinsically antimicrobial activities of PILs allow the safe collection of bioelectrical signals from the human body, such as electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG). In addition, a robotic hand may be operated in real-time, and a preliminary human-computer interface can be accomplished by simple processing of the collected EMG signal. This study establishes a novel practical approach for monitoring and using bioelectrical signals in real-world circumstances via the multifunctional electronic skin.

Ionic Liquid Electrolyte-Based Switchable Mirror with Fast Response and Improved Durability

Electrochemically tunable devices based on reversible metal electrodeposition have attracted extensive attention for energy-saving smart windows, information displays, digital signage, and variable reflectance mirrors, owing to their excellent optical modulation characteristics, low operation voltage, and superb electrochemical stability. Here, we study the effects of ionic liquid (IL)-based electrolytes on electrodeposition of the reversible electrochemical mirrors (REMs) by changing the organic cations of the ILs to obtain devices with the desired spectroelectrochemical and electrodeposited properties. Spectroelectrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscopy images show that organic cations drastically affect the switching speed and cycling durability, which we proposed on the basis of the difference in the absorption energies between cations and Ag(111) surfaces. Higher adsorption energy indicates strong adhesion between organic cations and Ag(111) surfaces, and this strong adsorption would prevent aggregation and agglomeration during the nucleation of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), leading to a denser and more compact electrodeposited Ag film and faster switching speeds (3.3 s for coloring and 14.3 s for bleaching). These findings allow us to fabricate dynamic devices that exhibit reversibly switchable light modulation at fast switching speeds and excellent cycling stability over thousands of cycles without attenuation. The combination of rapid switching and durable cycling stability enables tunable windows, which are based on reversible electrodeposition of metal Ag and IL-based electrolytes, make REM devices a competitive and promising alternative to traditional intelligent response materials.

Shape- and Color-Switchable Polyurethane Thermochromic Actuators Based on Metal-Containing Ionic Liquids

Many creatures have excellent control over their form, color, and morphology, allowing them to respond to the interaction of environmental stimuli better. Here, the bioinspired synergistic shape-color-switchable actuators based on thermally induced shape-memory triethanolamine cross-linked polyurethane (TEAPU) and thermochromic ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared. The thermochromic ILs with various metalized anions, including bis(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrachloro nickelate ([Bmim]₂[NiCl₄]) and bis(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrachloride cobalt ([Bmim]₂[CoCl₄]), are investigated. The actuators exhibit thermochromic response, as evidenced by a shift in the color of the composites, which is due to the formation of the tetrahedral complex MCl₄^2- (M = Ni and Co) after dehydration. The shape-color-switchable thermochromic actuators have strong molecular interaction between TEAPU and ILs and can mimic natural flowers and change the color and shape quickly in a narrow temperature range (30-70 °C). In addition, these thermochromic actuators can lift more than 50 times their weight and withstand strains of more than 1100%. The results represent the potential application in artificial muscle actuators and intelligent camouflages.

Robust and High-Temperature-Resistant Nanofiber Membrane Separators for Li-Metal, Li-Sulfur, and Aqueous Li-Ion Batteries

Mechanically strong separators with good electrolyte wettability and low-shrinkage properties are desirable for highly efficient and safe lithium batteries. In this study, multifunctional nanofiber membranes are fabricated by electrospinning a homogeneous solution containing amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate-grafted siloxane and polyacrylonitrile. After the chemical cross-linking of siloxane, the prepared nanofiber membranes are found to exhibit good mechanical properties, high thermostability, and superior electrolyte-philicity with aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. Li-metal cells with the fabricated membrane separator exhibit high cycling stability (Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% after 1000 cycles). Moreover, improved cycling stability of Li-sulfur batteries can be achieved using these membrane separators. These membrane separators can be further used in flexible aqueous lithium-ion batteries and exhibit steady electrochemistry performance. This work opens up a potential route for designing multifunctional universal separators for rechargeable batteries.
