Recent Applications of Chiral Ferrocene Ligands in Asymmetric Catalysis

Synthesis and catalytic properties of palladium(II) complexes with P,π-chelating ferrocene phosphinoallyl ligands and their non-tethered analogues

Hybrid phosphines usually combine a phosphine moiety with another heteroatom secondary donor group in their structures while compounds equipped with hydrocarbyl π-donor moieties remain uncommon. This contribution reports the synthesis and structural characterization of the first P/π-allyl-chelating complexes that were obtained using the structurally flexible and redox-active ferrocene unit as the scaffold, viz. [PdCl(R2PfcCHCHCH2-η3:κP)] (1R; R = Ph and cyclohexyl (Cy); fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl). These compounds were synthesized from the respective phosphinoferrocene carboxaldehydes R2PfcCHO via reaction with vinylmagnesium bromide to generate 1-(phosphinoferrocenyl)allyl alcohols, which were subsequently acetylated. The resulting allyl acetates reacted smoothly with [Pd2(dba)3]/[Et3NH]Cl (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) to produce the target compounds. Complexes 1R and their nontethered analogues [PdCl(η3-C3H5)(FcPR2-κP)] (5R; Fc = ferrocenyl) were evaluated as pre-catalysts for the Pd-catalysed allylic amination of cinnamyl acetate with aliphatic amines and Suzuki-Miyaura-type cross-coupling of 4-tolylboronic acid with benzoyl chloride. In these reactions, better results were achieved with compounds 5R (particularly with 5Ph), presumably because they form more stable LPd(0)-type catalysts.

Electroactive Behavior of Adjustable Vinylferrocene Copolymers in Electrolyte Media

The redox-active properties of a series of ferrocene-containing vinyl polymers were investigated in aqueous and organic media. Each metallopolymer contained vinylferrocene (VFc) and a non-redox-active species (X), and was combined with carbon nanotubes (CNT) to generate P(VFcn-co-X1-n)-CNT composites for heterogeneous electrochemical analysis. Tunable pseudocapacitances spanning ca. 0.03-280 F/g VFc in aqueous solution were achieved by varying the copolymer composition, with P(VFc0.11-co-HEMA0.89) producing standardized values at ca. 160-180 F/g VFc even for differently hydrated anions. Additionally, the polymer-bound ferrocene/ferrocenium redox potential was seen to depend prominently on its electrolyte anion's Gibbs free energy of hydration. Although the hydrophilic chloride anion negatively influenced the electrochemical stability of the VFc units when in their PVFc homopolymer, copolymerizing them with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and introducing perchlorate anions ameliorated their overall capacity retention by 64% and 38%, respectively. Lastly, the electrodes' responses in aprotic and protic solvents were examined for correlations with numerous solvent polarity metrics and solubility measures, with a notable observation being the stability and pseudocapacitive increase of the styrene (St)-containing P(VFc0.27-co-St0.73)-CNT from 5 to ca. 190 F/g VFc when in methanol instead of water. This study can help provide insight regarding material design considerations for redox moiety implementation in electrochemical applications.

Ferrocenyl Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes. Study of their Structural Features and the Influence of Bridging and Phosphane Ligands in a Catalytic Cyclization Reaction

The combination of the ferrocene moiety with gold(I) catalysis remains a relatively unexplored field. In this article, we delve into the synthesis, characterization, and potential catalytic activity of four complexes utilizing both monodentate and bidentate ferrocenyl diphenylphosphane ligands (ppf and dppf), coordinated with two gold(I) metal centers, linked by either chloride or pentafluorophenylthiolate bridging ligands. This leads to the formation of cationic "self-activated" precatalysts capable of initiating the catalytic cycle without the need for external additives. The catalytic activity of these complexes was assessed through a model reaction in gold(I) catalysis, specifically the cyclization of a N-propargylbenzamide to produce an oxazole. In addition, we studied and compared the influence exerted by both the phosphane and the bridging ligand on the performance of these catalysts.

P(III)-Directed Asymmetric C-H Arylation toward Planar Chiral Ferrocenes by Palladium Catalysis

Planar chiral ferrocenyl phosphines have been employed as highly valuable ligands in metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. However, their preparation remains a formidable challenge due to the requirement for intricate, multistep synthetic sequences. In addressing this issue, we have developed a groundbreaking enantioselective C-H activation strategy facilitated by P(III) directing groups, enabling the efficient construction of planar chiral ferrocenyl phosphines in a single step. Our innovative approach entails the combination of a palladium catalyst, a parent ferrocenyl phosphine, and a chiral phosphoramidite ligand, leading to exceptional reactivity and enantioselectivity. Remarkably, these novel ligands exhibit remarkable efficacy in silver-catalyzed asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions. We carried out a combination of experimental and computational studies to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the reaction pathway and the factors contributing to enantioselectivity.

Dihydroguaiazulenide Complexes and Catalysts of Group 8-12 Transition Metals: Ligands from Renewable Feedstock Replace, even Outmatch Petrochemical Based Cyclopentadienyl Chemistry

We present an in-depth study of the sterically demanding Cp-synthon (8-H-GuaH)Li isolated from natural product guaiazulene (Gua) as a ligand transfer reagent towards late transition metal complex precursors. The synthesis and full characterization of selected, essentially unexplored homo- and heteroleptic 8-H-guaiazulenide complexes of iron, ruthenium, cobalt, rhodium, platinum, copper and zinc are discussed in detail. In order to demonstrate their potential in catalytic applications, [(GuaH)PtMe3 ] was selected. The latter proved an even higher catalytic activity in light induced olefin hydrosilylation at catalyst loads as low as 5 ppm than classical [CpPtMe3 ] in a typical test reaction of silicone elastomer fabrication. Our results demonstrate that traditional petrochemical based Cp metal chemistry and catalysis can be replaced, sometimes even outmatched by superior catalysts based on cheap building blocks from renewable feedstock.

Triiron Complex with N-Ferrocenyl Aminocarbyne Ligand Bridging a Diiron Core: DFT, Electrochemical, and Biological Insights

The first N-ferrocenyl aminocarbyne complex, [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Fc)}]CF3SO3 ([2]CF3SO3), was synthesized with an 88% yield from [Fe2Cp2(CO)4], isocyanoferrocene (CNFc), and methyl triflate. The synthesis proceeded through the intermediate formation of [Fe2Cp2(CO)3(CNFc)], 1. Multinuclear NMR experiments revealed the presence of cis and trans isomers for [2]CF3SO3 in organic solvents, in agreement with DFT outcomes. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies demonstrated one reduction process occurring prevalently at the diiron core and one oxidation involving the ferrocenyl substituent. The oxidation process is expected to favor the redox activation of [2]+ in a biological environment. Both [2]CF3SO3 and its phenyl analogue [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Ph)}]CF3SO3 ([3]CF3SO3), prepared for comparison, exerted moderate antiproliferative activity against the human cancer cell lines A431, HCT-15, PSN-1, 2008, and U1285. However, [2]CF3SO3 exhibited a higher cytotoxicity than [3]CF3SO3, showed a substantial ability to induce intracellular ROS production, and outperformed cisplatin in a three-dimensional SCLC cell model.

Enantioselective Rh(I)-Catalyzed C-H Arylation of Ferroceneformaldehydes

As an important class of platform molecules, planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds could be transformed into various functional groups offering facile synthesis of chiral ligands and catalysts. However, developing efficient and straightforward methods for accessing enantiopure planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds, especially ferroceneformaldehydes, remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)/phosphoramidite-catalyzed enantioselective C-H bond arylation of ferroceneformaldehydes. Readily available aryl halides such as aryl iodides, aryl bromides, and even aryl chlorides are suitable coupling partners in this transformation, leading to a series of planar chiral ferroceneformaldehydes in good yields and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and >99% ee). The aldehyde group could be transformed into diverse functional groups smoothly, and enantiopure Ugi's amine and PPFA analogues could be synthesized efficiently. The latter was found to be a highly efficient ligand in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions. Mechanistic experiments supported the formation of imine intermediates as the key step during the reaction.

A Tetradentate Ligand Enables Iron-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Ketones in a CO- or Isocyanide-Free Fashion

We herein reported the design and synthesis of a ferrocene-based tetradentate ligand that is featured with modular synthesis and rigid skeleton. Its iron(II) complex facilitates asymmetric direct hydrogenation of ketones without the participation of extra strong-field ligand such as CO and isocyanide. Hydride donor lithium aluminum hydride (LAH) converted non-reactive Fe(II) species to reactive Fe(II) hydride species. With this catalyst, various chiral alcohols including the intermediate for montelukast could be prepared with satisfactory yields and enantioinduction.

Functionalized Ferrocene Enables Selective Electrosorption of Arsenic Oxyanions over Phosphate─A DFT Examination of the Effects of Substitutional Moieties, pH, and Oxidation State

Ferrocene (Fc)/ferrocenium (Fc+)-decorated carbon nanotube electrode materials have shown promise for selectively adsorbing arsenic (As) over dissimilar anions like Cl- and ClO4-, and isostructural transition-metal oxyanions for water remediation; however, the competition between same-group oxyanions (such as arsenate vs phosphate) is underexplored and poorly understood. We use ab initio calculations to examine the competitive binding of As(V), P(V), and As(III) to Fc/Fc+ with and without functional substitutions (OH, SH, NH2, COOH, CH3, C2H5, NO2, and Cl). This work aims to understand factors that induce the selective binding of toxic arsenic over phosphate. We find that neat Fc cannot distinguish the three oxyanions because physical forces (electrostatics and dispersion) dominate the Fc-oxyanion interactions. However, combined oxidation and substitution effects enable selectivity for As(V) over P(V). Oxidation of Fc to Fc+ allows the formation of Fc+-oxyanion covalent bonds with varying donor-acceptor character depending on the oxyanion. Additionally, NH2 and SH groups that donate charge to the base Fc+ molecule and H-bond to oxyanion induce an energetic preference for As(V) over P(V) by -0.23 and -0.13 eV, respectively. Differences in pKa between As(V)/P(V) and As(III) preclude any preference for As(III) over the other anions. Using the calculated energetics, we predict the pH-dependent binding selectivity of functionalized ferrocenium. These findings demonstrate the challenges of Fc/Fc+-oxyanion interaction for selective binding and provide a path for identifying other molecules and substituents for efficient metallocene adsorbent design.

Hydrophobicity Tuned Polymeric Redox Materials with Solution-Specific Electroactive Properties for Selective Electrochemical Metal Ion Recovery in Aqueous Environments

Adaptable redox-active materials hold great potential for electrochemically mediated separation processes via targeted molecular recognition and reduced energy requirements. This work presents molecularly tunable vinylferrocene metallopolymers (P(VFc-co-X)) with modifiable operating potentials, charge storage capacities, capacity retentions, and analyte affinities in various electrolyte environments based on the hydrophobicity of X. The styrene (St) co-monomer impedes hydrophobic anions from ferrocene access, providing P(VFc-co-St) with specific response capabilities for and greatly improved cyclabilities in hydrophilic anions. This adjustable electrochemical stability enables preferential chromium and rhenium oxyanion separation from both hydrophobic and hydrophilic electrolytes that significantly surpasses capacitive removal by an order of magnitude, with a robust perrhenate uptake capacity of 329 mg/g VFc competitive with established metal-organic framework physisorbents and 17-fold selectivity over 20-fold excess nitrate. Pairing P(VFc-co-X) with other solution-specific electroactive macromolecules such as the pH-dependent poly(hydroquinone) (PHQ) and the cesium-selective nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) generates dual-functionalized electrosorption cells. P(VFc-co-X)//PHQ offers optimizable energetics based on X and pH for a substantial 4.6-fold reduction from 0.21 to 0.04 kWh/mol rhenium in acidic versus near-neutral media, and P(VFc-co-St)//NiHCF facilitates simultaneous extraction of rhenium, chromium, and cesium ions. Proof-of-concept reversible perrhenate separation in flow further highlights such frameworks as promising approaches for next-generation water purification technologies.

Synthesis, Structure, Reactivity, and Intramolecular Donor-Acceptor Interactions in a Phosphinoferrocene Stibine and Its Corresponding Phosphine Chalcogenides and Stiboranes

Ferrocene-based phosphines equipped with additional functional groups are versatile ligands for coordination chemistry and catalysis. This contribution describes a new compound of this type, combining phosphine and stibine groups at the ferrocene backbone, viz. 1-(diphenylphosphino)-1'-(diphenylstibino)ferrocene (1). Phosphinostibine 1 and the corresponding P-chalcogenide derivatives Ph2P(E)fcSbPh2 (1E, fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl, E = O, S, Se) were synthesized and further converted to the corresponding stiboranes Ph2P(E)fcSb(O2C6Cl4)Ph2 (6 and 6E) by oxidation with o-chloranil. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and theoretical methods. Both NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations confirmed the presence of P → Sb and P═O → Sb donor-acceptor interactions in 6 and 6O, triggered by the oxidation of the stibine moiety into Lewis acidic stiborane. The corresponding interactions in 6S and 6Se were of the same type but significantly weaker. A coordination study with AuCl as the model metal fragment revealed that the phosphine group acts as the "primary" coordination site, in line with its higher basicity. The obtained Au(I) complexes were applied as catalysts in the Au-catalyzed cyclization of N-propargylbenzamide and in the oxidative [2 + 2 + 1] cyclization of ethynylbenzene with acetonitrile and pyridine N-oxides. The catalytic results showed that the stibine complexes had worse catalytic performance than their phosphine counterparts, most likely due to the formation of weaker coordination bonds and hence poorer stabilization of the active metal species. Nevertheless, the stibine moiety could be used to fine-tune the properties of the ligated metal center by changing the oxidation state or substituents at the "remote" Sb atom.

Carbon Nucleophile-Initiated Rauhut-Currier Reaction: An Atom-Economical Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Carbocycles

A Rauhut-Currier reaction cascade is achieved in the presence of carbon nucleophiles under mild conditions. This original atom-economical transformation enables an efficient one-pot synthesis of densely substituted carbocycles from readily accessible substrates. The key promoter role of the cesium cation in the cascade process was demonstrated.

From ferrocene to decasubstituted enantiopure ferrocene-1,1'-disulfoxide derivatives

The functionalization of (R,R)-S,S'-di-tert-butylferrocene-1,1'-disulfoxide by deprotolithiation-electrophilic trapping sequences was studied towards polysubstituted, enantiopure derivatives for which the properties were determined. While the 2,2'-disubstituted ferrocene derivatives were obtained as expected, subsequent functionalization of the 2,2'-di(phenylthio) and 2,2'-bis(trimethylsilyl) derivatives occurred primarily at the 4- or 4,4'-positions. This unusual regioselectivity was discussed in detail in light of pK_a values and structural data. The less sterically hindered 2,2'-difluorinated derivative yielded the expected 1,1',2,2',3,3'-hexasubstituted ferrocenes by the deprotometallation-trapping sequence. Further functionalization proved possible, leading to early examples of 1,1',2,2',3,3',4,4'-octa, nona and even decasubstituted ferrocenes. Some of the newly prepared ferrocene-1,1'-disulfoxides were tested as ligands for enantioselective catalysis and their electrochemical properties were investigated.

Design and synthesis of a new family of planar and central chiral ferrocenyl phosphine ligands

A family of planar chiral indene-fused ferrocenes were prepared through an intramolecular asymmetric C-H arylation in excellent yields (up to 99%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). They were thereafter successfully transformed to chiral ferrocenyl phosphines, featuring both planar and central chiralities, in good yields (up to 83%) and excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 99% de) through highly diastereoselective phosphination. This protocol offers a general method for planar and central chiral ferrocenyl phosphines. The potential applications of the newly developed ligands were demonstrated by a Pd-catalyzed enantioselective allylic alkylation reaction, in which high enantioselectivity (92% ee) and good yield (89%) were obtained.

New kind of electride sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M12(η8-C8H8)2M22 (M1 = Na, K and M2 = Ca, Mg): a theoretical study

In the present study, the electronic structures of a series of binuclear sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂M²₂ (M¹ = Na, K and M² = Ca, Mg) are studied theoretically. Each cyclooctatetraene ligand binds with the metal in the η⁸ binding mode. The M²-M² bond length agrees well with the reported bimetallic covalent Ca₂ and Mg₂ bond lengths. The Wiberg bond index (WBI) also indicates the presence of covalent M²-M² bonds, which gives additional stability to the complex. A non-nuclear attractor (NNA) is found in-between the M²-M² bond and the negative Laplacian of the electron density is found at the NNA. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot shows that electron density is localized at the M²-M² bond. Based on the performed analysis, we have concluded that the designed sandwich complexes are electrides. We herein report, for the first time, the electride sandwich complexes of the cyclooctatetraene ligand. Due to the presence of a diffuse electron system, the electride complexes exhibit higher values of the static second hyperpolarizability within the range of 2.6 × 10⁵ to 1.4 × 10⁶ a.u. Among the studied complexes, M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂Ca₂ exhibit a higher value of static second hyperpolarizability.

Beyond phosphorus: synthesis, reactivity, coordination behaviour and catalytic properties of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene

Compared to their widely studied phosphine counterparts, ferrocene stibines have received only marginal attention thus far. This paper describes the synthesis of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene (1*), which is an antimony analogue of the ubiquitous dppf, and our investigations into the reactivity and coordination behaviour of this compound. Thus, distibine 1 was oxidised to stiboranes fc(SbPh₂X₂)₂ (X = Cl, 2*; F, 6*; fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl) and to stibine-stiborane Ph₂SbfcSbPh₂F₂ (5*). Compounds 2 and 6 were easily hydrolysed to produce ferrocenophanes fc[SbPh₂XOSbPh₂X] (X = Cl, 3*; F, 7*). Removing the halogen from 3 with silver(I) salts afforded the corresponding ferrocenophanes with O-bound oxyanions, fc[SbPh₂ZOSbPh₂Z] (Z = NO₃, 4a*; ClO₄, 4b*), which were alternatively prepared from 2 and also converted back to 2 by adding a chloride source. Through investigations into the coordination behaviour of distibine 1, the following compounds were isolated and characterised: [(μ-ClO₄)₂{Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')}₂] (8*), [Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = ClO₄, 9a; SbF₆, 9b*), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1){(arene)MCl₂}₂] (10*, 11*) and [(arene)MCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')][PF₆] (12*, 13*; 10, 12: M/arene = Ru/η⁶-p-cymene, 11, 13; Rh/η⁵-C₅Me₅), [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)RuCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (14), [MCl₂(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (M = Pd, 15*; Pt, 16*), [Pd(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X₂ (X = BF₄, 17a; SbF₆, 17b*), [Pd(η²-ma)(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (18*; ma = maleic anhydride), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1)(AuCl)₂] (19*), and [Au(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = AuCl₂, 20a*; SbF₆, 20b*). Inspection of the structural parameters suggested that complexes featuring 1 exhibit less sterically strained structures than their dppf analogues due to longer M-Sb and Sb-C bonds, which reduce crowding around the ligated metal centre. Cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations revealed that the primary electrochemical oxidation of 1 is reversible and occurs at the ferrocene unit. Based on preliminary catalytic tests in Suzuki-Miyaura biaryl coupling, Pd-1 complexes exhibited a lower efficiency than their respective Pd-dppf analogues. Cp*Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Arylation of Ferrocenethionamides with Aryl Boronic Acids for the Synthesis of Aryl-Ferrocenes

We developed a Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H arylation of ferrocenethionamides with arylboronic acids for the synthesis of aryl-ferrocenes under mild and base-free conditions, using Ag₂ CO₃ as oxidant. The reaction results in high yields and excellent regioselectivity accommodating a broad scope of substrate range and functional group compatibility, and provides an alternative protocol for the generation of highly functionalized aryl-ferrocene compounds.

Ferrocene derivatives with planar chirality and their enantioseparation by liquid-phase techniques

In the last decade, planar chiral ferrocenes have attracted a growing interest in several fields, particularly in asymmetric catalysis, medicinal chemistry, chiroptical spectroscopy and electrochemistry. In this frame, the access to pure or enriched enantiomers of planar chiral ferrocenes has become essential, relying on the availability of efficient asymmetric synthesis procedures and enantioseparation methods. Despite this, in enantioseparation science, these metallocenes were not comprehensively explored, and very few systematic analytical studies were reported in this field so far. On the other hand, enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography has been frequently used by organic and organometallic chemists in order to measure the enantiomeric purity of planar chiral ferrocenes prepared by asymmetric synthesis. On these bases, this review aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview on the enantioseparation of planar chiral ferrocenes by discussing liquid-phase enantioseparation methods developed over time, integrating this main topic with the most relevant aspects of ferrocene chemistry. Thus, the main structural features of ferrocenes and the methods to model this class of metallocenes will be briefly summarized. In addition, planar chiral ferrocenes of applicative interest as well as the limits of asymmetric synthesis for the preparation of some classes of planar chiral ferrocenes will also be discussed with the aim to orient analytical scientists towards 'hot topics' and issues which are still open for accessing enantiomers of ferrocenes featured by planar chirality.

Fundamentals of chirality, resolution, and enantiopure molecule synthesis methods

The chirality of molecules is a concept that explains the interactions in nature. We may observe the same formula but different organizations revolving around the chiral center. Since Pasteur's meticulous observation of sodium ammonium tartrate crystals' structure, scientists have discovered many features of chiral molecules. The number of newly approved single enantiomeric drugs increases every year and takes place in the market. Thus, separation or resolution methods of racemic mixtures are of continued importance in the efficacy of drugs, installation of affordable production processes, and convenient synthetic chemistry practice. This article presents the asymmetric synthesis approaches and the classification of direct resolution methods of chiral molecules.

Ferrocene-based P-chiral amidophosphinate: stereoselective synthesis and X-ray structural study

Racemic and enantiopure ferrocene-based P-chiral amidophosphinates have been simply and stereoselectively synthesized by ortho-lithiation of rac- or (R)-Ugi's amine and further reaction with amidochlorophenylphosphinate Cl-P(O)(Ph)NEt₂. This is the first example of an asymmetric reaction of ortho-lithiated Ugi's amine with tetracoordinated phosphorus(V) chlorides. The structures of rac- and (R)-Ugi's amine ferrocenyl(phenyl)phosphinic acid N,N-diethylamide have been extensively studied experimentally (NMR, X-ray analysis, electrochemistry). The CV first peak refers to the oxidation of the amine fragment, which is clearly seen when (R)-Ugi's amine ferrocenyl(phenyl)phosphinic acid N,N-diethylamide reacts with anhydrous acid. The addition of two equivalents of CF₃COOH leads to the protonation of nitrogen atoms, and a classical reversible wave of oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) is observed.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Both Axially and Planar Chiral Ferrocenes via Axial-to-Planar Diastereoinduction

Ferrocenes with planar chirality have emerged as an important class of scaffolds for ligands in asymmetric catalysis; however, ferrocene molecules with polychiral structures have not been well explored. Herein, both axially and planar chiral ferrocenes were synthesized via palladium/chiral norbornene cooperative catalysis and axial-to-planar diastereoinduction. In this work, chiral norbornene was used to stereoselectively control the aromatic axial chirality, and further selectivity induced C(sp²)-H activation for ferrocene planar chirality. Based on density functional theory calculations, the catalytic model of chiral norbornene with the substrate and the axial-to-planar diastereoinduction process were confirmed.

Advanced Application of Planar Chiral Heterocyclic Ferrocenes

This manuscript is reviewing the superior catalytic activity and selectivity of ferrocene ligands in a wide range of reactions: reduction of ketones, hydrogenation of olefins, hydroboration, cycloaddition, enantioselective synthesis of biaryls, Tsuji–Trost allylation. Moreover, the correlation between a ligand structure and its catalytic activity is discussed in this review.

A Quantum-Guided Molecular Mechanics Force Field for the Ferrocene Scaffold

Ferrocene derivatives have a wide range of applications, including as ligands in asymmetric catalysis, due to their chemical stability, rigid backbone, steric bulk, and ability to encode stereochemical information via planar chirality. Unfortunately, few of the available molecular mechanics force fields incorporate parameters for the accurate study of this important building block. Here, we present a MM3* force field for ferrocenyl ligands, which was generated using the quantum-guided molecular mechanics (Q2MM) method. Detailed validation by comparison to DFT calculations and crystal structures demonstrates the accuracy of the parameters and uncovers the physical origin of deviations through excess energy analysis. Combining the ferrocene force field with a force field for Pd-allyl complexes and comparing the crystal structures shows the compatibility with previously developed MM3* force fields. Finally, the ferrocene force field was combined with a previously published transition-state force field to predict the stereochemical outcomes of the aminations of Pd-allyl complexes with different amines and different chiral ferrocenyl ligands, with an R² of ∼0.91 over 10 examples.

Recent Advances in Transition-Metal-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization of Ferrocene Amides

During the past decades, in synthetic organic chemistry, directing-group-assisted C-H functionalization is found to be a key tool for the expedient and site-selective construction of C-C and hybrid bonds. Among C-H functionalization of ferrocene derivatives, the directed group strategy is undoubtedly the most commonly used method. Compared to the other directing groups, ferrocene amides can be synthesized easily and are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions because its metal centre permits fine, tuneable and reversible coordination. The family of amide directing groups mainly comprises monodentate and bidentate directing groups, which are categorized on the basis of coordination sites. In this review, various C-H bond functionalization reactions of ferrocene using amide directing groups are broadly discussed.

Thioamide directed iridium(I)-catalyzed C-H arylation of ferrocenes with aryl boronic acids

The first Ir(I)-catalyzed thioamide-assisted C-H arylation of ferrocenes with aryl boronic acids under base-free mild reaction conditions in the presence of Ag₂CO₃ as an oxidant with eco-friendly 2-MeTHF as a solvent was developed. This reaction has a wide range of substrates (37 examples) and functional group tolerance (18-94% yields), and provides promising access to aryl thioamide-ferrocene compounds with good yields and regioselectivity.

Synthesis and crystal structure of [(Sp )-(2-phenylferrocenyl)methyl]trimethylammonium iodide dichloromethane monosolvate

The packing of the title disubstituted ferrocene derivative is stabilized by weak C—H⋯X (X = I, Cl), C—H⋯π(Cp) and C—Cl⋯π(phen­yl) inter­actions, building a three-dimensional network. The cation has planar chirality with S_p(Fc) absolute configuration. The structure of the title compound is compared with related disubstituted (tri­meth­ylammonio)­methyl ferrocenes.

As a follow-up to our research on the chemistry of disubstituted ferrocene derivatives, the synthesis and the structure of the title compound, [Fe(C₅H₅)(C₁₅H₁₉N)]I·CH₂Cl₂, is described. The cation mol­ecule is built up from a ferrocene disubstituted by a tri­methyl­ammonium methyl group and a phenyl ring. The asymmetric unit contains the iodide to equilibrate the charge and a disordered di­chloro­methane solvate. The disordered model results from a roughly statistical exchange (0.6/0.4) between one Cl and one H. The packing of the structure is stabilized by weak C—H⋯X (X = I, Cl), C—H⋯π(Cp) and C—Cl⋯π(phen­yl) inter­actions, building a three-dimensional network. The cation has planar chirality with S_p(Fc) absolute configuration. The structure of the title compound is compared with related disubstituted (tri­meth­ylammonio)­methyl ferrocenes.

Recent advances in the synthesis of ferrocene derivatives via 3d transition metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization

In recent years, transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization has gradually developed into a powerful tool for the synthesis of ferrocenes in an atom- and step-economic fashion. However, despite significant achievements, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. The use of inexpensive and sustainable 3d metals in the C-H functionalization of ferrocenes remains challenging, especially the development of asymmetric versions. Herein, we summarize the remarkable recent progress in the synthesis of ferrocenes by 3d transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation until December 2021.

Central-to-Folding Chirality Control: Asymmetric Synthesis of Multilayer 3D Targets With Electron-Deficient Bridges

New multilayer 3D chiral molecules have been designed and synthesized asymmetrically through the strategy of center-to-multilayer folding chirality control and double Suzuki couplings. Individual diastereoisomers were readily obtained and separated via flash column chromatography. The key diastereoisomer was further converted into corresponding enantiomers. These enantiomers possess electron-deficient aromatic bridges layered with top and bottom aromatic scaffolds. X-ray structural analysis has unambiguously confirmed the configuration, and intermolecular packing results in regular planar patterns in solid crystals. The synthesis was achieved in a total of ten steps starting from commercially available starting materials.

Planar Chiral 1,3-Disubstituted Ferrocenyl Phosphine Gold(I) Catalysts

Planar chiral monodentate 1,3-disubstituted ferrocene phosphines inspired on JohnPhos-type ligands have been synthesized and applied to the enantioselective gold(I) catalyzed [4 + 2] cycloaddition of 1,6-arylenynes. Computational studies rationalized the working mode of the catalyst on the folding of the substrate in the chiral environment of the ligand involving attractive noncovalent interactions.

Synthesis of Polysubstituted Ferrocenesulfoxides

The purpose of the study is to design synthetic methodologies, especially directed deprotometalation using polar organometallic reagents, to access polysubstituted ferrocenesulfoxides. From enantiopure 2-substituted (SiMe₃, PPh₂) S-tert-butylferrocenesulfoxides, a third substituent was first introduced at the 5 position (SiMe₃, I, D, C(OH)Ph₂, Me, PPh₂, CH₂NMe₂, F) and removal of the trimethylsilyl group then afforded 2-substituted ferrocenesulfoxides unreachable otherwise. Attempts to apply the “halogen dance” reaction to the ferrocenesulfoxide series led to unexpected results although rationalized in light of calculated pK_a values. Further functionalizations were also possible. Thus, new enantiopure, planar chiral di- and trisubstituted ferrocenes have been obtained, in addition to several original 2-substituted, 2,3- and 2,5-disubstituted, 2,3,5-trisubstituted and even 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted ferrocenesulfoxides, also enantiopure.

Enantiopure ferrocene-1,2-disulfoxides: synthesis and reactivity

The rational use of directed deprotometallation, sulfur oxidation and sulfoxide/lithium exchange allowed the synthesis of enantiopure ferrocene-1,2-disulfoxide derivatives. Not only do they represent the first members of this original family, but some of them have shown promise as ligands in rhodium-catalysed conjugate addition.

Bimetallic complexes that merge metallocene and pincer-metal building blocks: synthesis, stereochemistry and catalytic reactivity

This perspective is to illustrate the synthesis and applications of bimetallic complexes by merging a metallocene and a (cyclopentadienyl/aryl) pincer metal complex. Four possible ways to merge metallocene and pincer-metal motifs are reported and representative examples are discussed in more detail. These bimetallic complexes have been employed in some important catalytic reactions such as cross-coupling, transfer hydrogenation or synthesis of ammonia. The metallocene fragment may tune the electronic properties of the pincer ligand, due to its redox reversible properties. Also, the presence of two metals in a single complex allows their electronic communication, which proved beneficial for, e.g., the catalytic activity of some species. The presence of the metallocene fragment provides an excellent opportunity to develop chiral catalysts, because the metallocene merger generally renders the two faces of the pincer-metal catalytic site diastereotopic. Besides, an extra chiral functionality may be added to the bimetallic species by using pincer motifs that are planar chiral, e.g. by using the different substituents of pincer ligand "arms" or non-symmetrical arene groupings. Post-functionalization of pre-formed pincer-metal complexes, via η⁶-coordination with an areneophile such as [CpRu]⁺ and [Cp*Ru]⁺ presents a striking strategy to obtain diastereomeric metallocene-pincer type derivatives, that actually involve half-sandwich metallocenes. This approach offers the possibility to create diastereomerically pure derivatives by using the chiral TRISPHAT anion. The authors hope that this report of the synthetic, physico-chemical properties and remarkable catalytic activities of metallocene-based pincer-metal complexes will inspire other researchers to continue exploring this realm.
