Design, Synthesis and Characterization of Palladium-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework and Its Application as Heterogeneous Catalysis for C-H Arylation of Azoles

A novel triazine-based covalent organic framework (TFPT-Bz COF) has been constructed by the condensation of 2,4,6-tris(5-formyl-2-pyridinoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TFPT) and benzidine (BZ) with deep eutectic solvent (DES) as the reaction medium. After the introduction of Pd ions through strong coordination to TFPT-Bz COF matrix, the constructed TFPT-Bz COF/Pd composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity for C-H arylation of azoles with aryl halides in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. The protocol allows the arylation of a variety of substituted azoles with diverse aryl halides in high to excellent yield. Moreover, the TFPT-Bz COF/Pd catalyst can be recycled several times without significantly reducing its activity.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Hydrocarbons Designed by π-Extension of Indeno[1,2,3,4-pgra]perylene at the 1,2,12-Positions

The relationship between the overall electronic structure of π-conjugated molecules and the arrangement of their constituent elements is of fundamental importance. Establishing rational design guidelines for conjugated hydrocarbons with narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps is useful to develop near-infrared (NIR) responsive dyes and redox-active materials. This study describes the synthesis and properties of three conjugated hydrocarbons, i. e., an indenonaphthoperylene, an indenoterrylene, and a diindenoterrylene. These molecules exhibit NIR absorption despite the absence of significant antiaromaticity and diradical character. Notably, the indenonaphthoperylene exhibits red-to-NIR emission in the 620-850 nm region. The indenoterrylene and the diindenoterrylene exhibit NIR absorption tailing to 870 and 940 nm, respectively. Moreover, the effect of the π-extension of indenoperylene is disclosed in order to propose guidelines for achieving a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap with negligible antiaromaticity and diradical character.

Cp*Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Arylation of Ferrocenethionamides with Aryl Boronic Acids for the Synthesis of Aryl-Ferrocenes

We developed a Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H arylation of ferrocenethionamides with arylboronic acids for the synthesis of aryl-ferrocenes under mild and base-free conditions, using Ag₂ CO₃ as oxidant. The reaction results in high yields and excellent regioselectivity accommodating a broad scope of substrate range and functional group compatibility, and provides an alternative protocol for the generation of highly functionalized aryl-ferrocene compounds.

Nickel-Catalyzed Direct Arylation Polymerization for the Synthesis of Thiophene-Based Cross-linked Polymers

An earth-abundant nickel(II) bipyridine catalyst, combined with lithium hexamethyldisilazide as base, demonstrates its wide applicability in the direct arylation polymerization of di- and tri-thiophene heteroaryls with poly(hetero)aryl halides. With a nickel catalyst loading of 2.5 mol%, a series of twenty highly cross-linked organic polymers is obtained in 34 to 99 % yields. Using mixed polytopic coupling partners allows obtaining alternating and optically active thiophene-based solids with intrinsic porosity.

C-H Arylation of Benzene with Aryl Halides using H2 and a Water-Soluble Rh-Based Electron Storage Catalyst

This paper reports the first example of C-H arylation of benzene under mild conditions, using H₂ as an electron source {turnover numbers (TONs)=0.7-2.0 for 24 h}. The reaction depends on a Rh-based electron storage catalyst, and proceeds at room temperature and in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the H₂ is inactive during the radical transfer step, greatly reducing unwanted side reactions.

Reusable Manganese Catalyst for Site-Selective Pyridine C-H Arylations and Alkylations

Herein, we disclose a recyclable, hybrid manganese catalyst for site‐selective azine C−H activation by weak amide assistance. The novel, reusable catalyst enabled C3–H arylation and C3–H alkylation with ample scope, and was characterized by detailed transmission electron microscopy analysis.

Quadruple Role of Pd Catalyst in Domino Reaction Involving Aryl to Alkyl 1,5-Pd Migration to Access 1,9-Bridged Triptycenes

A Pd-catalyzed domino reaction of 1,8,13-tribromo-9-methoxytriptycenes is reported. Under conventional Suzuki coupling conditions, the triptycenes underwent multiple transformations to give 1,9-bridged triptycenes. Based on mechanistic investigations, a single Pd catalyst functions as Pd⁰ , Pd^II and Pd^IV species to catalyze four distinct processes: (1) aryl to alkyl 1,5-Pd migration, (2) intramolecular arylation, (3) homocoupling of phenylboronic acid and (4) Suzuki coupling. DFT calculations revealed that 1,5-Pd migration likely proceeds via both concerted Pd^II and stepwise Pd^IV routes. Asymmetric synthesis of the chiral triptycenes, as well as optical resolution, and further transformation are also reported.

Photoinduced Heterogeneous C-H Arylation by a Reusable Hybrid Copper Catalyst

Heterogeneous copper catalysis enabled photoinduced C-H arylations under exceedingly mild conditions at room temperature. The versatile hybrid copper catalyst provided step-economical access to arylated heteroarenes, terpenes and alkaloid natural products with various aryl halides. The hybrid copper catalyst could be reused without significant loss of catalytic efficacy. Detailed studies in terms of TEM, HRTEM and XPS analysis of the hybrid copper catalyst, among others, supported its outstanding stability and reusability.

An Iron-Based Long-Lived Catalyst for Direct C-H Arylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes

Direct C-H arylation of arenes and heteroarenes to biaryls at ambient temperature has been accomplished using a phenalenyl-supported iron(III) catalyst. The present catalyst requires a chemical reductant such as potassium and functions without any light stimulation. C-H arylation of various heteroarenes including pyridine as well as unactivated arene such as benzene delivered good to excellent yield (28 examples, up to 92 %) at room temperature. A combined effort based on experiments and theoretical calculations established that a phenalenyl-based radical species (generated by chemical reduction of the iron(III) coordinated phenalenyl complex) plays key role during the catalysis. Furthermore, this catalyst displayed remarkable stability during the catalysis, as evident from the fact that it was still usable over ten consecutive catalytic runs without losing its catalytic efficiency.

Meta-Selective C-H Arylation of Aromatic Alcohols with a Readily Attachable and Cleavable Molecular Scaffold

The first example of meta-selective C-H arylations of arene alcohol-based substrates is described. The strategy involves the combination of the transient norbornene strategy with the quinoline-based acetal scaffold to achieve the formation of biaryl compounds. Both a two-step meta-arylation/scaffold cleavage process and a total telescoping procedure are described, highlighting the convenient attributes of attachment, removal, and recovery of the acetal scaffold. Moreover, the meta-arylated compounds can be further derivatized via ortho-selective functionalizations. These processes establish a foundation for catalytic polyfunctionalization of alcohol-based compounds.

Thiazole-Based σ1 Receptor Ligands: Diversity by Late-Stage C-H Arylation of Thiazoles, Structure-Affinity and Selectivity Relationships, and Molecular Interactions

Spirocyclic thiophene derivatives represent promising σ1 ligands with high σ1 affinity and selectivity over the σ2 subtype. To increase ligand efficiency, the thiophene ring was replaced bioisosterically by a thiazole ring, and the pyran ring was opened. Late-stage diversification by regioselective C-H arylation of thiazoles 9 a-c resulted in a set of 53 compounds with high diversity. This set of compounds was analyzed with respect to σ1 affinity, σ1 /σ2 selectivity, lipophilicity (logD7.4 ), lipophilicity-corrected ligand efficiency (LELP), and molecular target interactions. The most promising candidates were pyridyl-substituted thiazole derivatives 33 c (2-(1-benzyl-4-ethoxypiperidin-4-yl)-5-(pyridin-3-yl)thiazole) and 34 c (2-(1-benzyl-4-ethoxypiperidin-4-yl)-5-(pyridin-4-yl)thiazole), possessing low-nanomolar σ1 affinity (Ki =1.3 and 1.9 nm), high σ1 /σ2 selectivity (>1500-fold), low lipophilicity (logD7.4 =1.8) and very good ligand efficiency (LELP=5.5), indicating promising pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Molecular simulation studies, including docking and deconvolution of the free binding energy into its major components, led to decreased hydrophobic stabilization of pyridyl derivatives 33 c and 34 c, which was compensated by lower desolvation energy.
