News from Silicon: An Isomer of Hexasilabenzene and A Metal-Silicon Triple Bond

Formation and Characterization of BeFe(CO)4 - Anion with Beryllium-Iron Bonding

Heteronuclear BeFe(CO)₄ ^- anion complex is generated in the gas phase, which is detected by mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. The complex is characterized to have a Be-Fe bonded Be-Fe(CO)₄ ^- structure with C_3v symmetry and all of the four carbonyl ligands bonded on the iron center. Quantum chemical studies indicate that the complex has a quite short Be-Fe bond. Besides one electron-sharing σ bond, there are two additional, albeit weak, Be ← Fe(CO)₄ ^- dative π bonding interactions. The findings imply that metal-metal bonding between s-block and transition metals is viable under suitable coordination environment.

An Open-Shell Singlet SnI Diradical and H2 Splitting

The first SnI diradical [(ADCPh )Sn]2 (4) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADCPh ={CN(Dipp)}2 CPh; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) scaffold has been isolated as a green crystalline solid by KC8 reduction of the corresponding bis-chlorostannylene [(ADCPh )SnCl]2 (3). The six-membered C4 Sn2 -ring of 4 containing six π-electrons shows a diatropic ring current, thus 4 may also be regarded as the first 1,4-distannabenzene derivative. DFT calculations suggest an open-shell singlet (OS) ground state of 4 with a remarkably small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEOS-T =4.4 kcal mol-1 ), which is consistent with CASSCF (ΔES-T =6.6 kcal mol-1 and diradical character y=37 %) calculations. The diradical 4 splits H2 at room temperature to yield the bis-hydridostannylene [(ADCPh )SnH]2 (5). Further reactivity of 4 has been studied with PhSeSePh and MeOTf.

Crystalline Divinyldiarsenes and Cleavage of the As=As Bond

The first divinyldiarsenes [{(NHC)C(Ph)}As]₂ (NHC=IPr 3 a, SIPr 3 b; IPr=C{(NAr)CH}₂ ; SIPr=C{(NAr)CH₂ }₂ ; Ar=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) are reported. Compounds 3 a and 3 b were prepared by the reduction of corresponding chlorides {(NHC)C(Ph)}AsCl₂ (NHC=IPr 2 a, SIPr 2 b) with Mg. Calculations revealed a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap of 3.86 (3 a) and 4.24 eV (3 b). Treatment of 3 a with (Me₂ S)AuCl led to the cleavage of the As=As bond to restore 2 a, which is expected to proceed via the diarsane [{(IPr)C(Ph)}AsCl]₂ (4). Remarkably, 4 as well as 2 a can be selectively accessed on treatment of 3 a with an appropriate amount of C₂ Cl₆ . Moreover, 3 a readily reacts with PhEEPh (E=Se or Te) at room temperature to give {(IPr)C(Ph)}As(EPh)₂ (E=Se 5 a; Te 5 b), revealing the cleavage of As=As and E-E bonds and the formation of As-E bonds. Such highly selective stepwise oxidation (3 a→4→2 a) and bond metathesis (3 a→5 a,b) reactions are unprecedented in main-group chemistry.

The planarity of heteroatom analogues of benzene: Energy component analysis and the planarization of hexasilabenzene

There are various nonplanar heteroatom analogues of benzene-cyclic 6π electron systems-and among them, hexasilabenzene (Si₆ H₆ ) is well known as a typical example. To determine the factors that control their planarity, quantum chemical calculations and an energy component analysis were performed. The results show that the energy components mainly controlling the planarity of benzene and hexasilabenzene are different. For hexasilabenzene, electron repulsion energy was found to be significantly important for the planarity. The application of the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect and the Carter-Goddard-Malrieu-Trinquier model for the interpretation of the planarity of the benzene analogues was also investigated. Furthermore, based on the quantitative results, it was revealed that the planarization of hexasilabenzene is realized by introducing substituents with π-accepting ability, such as the boryl group, that bring about a reduction of the π-electron repulsion on the silicon skeleton. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Designing the Backbone of Hexasilabenzene Derivatives with a High Unimolecular Kinetic Stability

It is an important subject to theoretically predict the kinetic stability of transient species. In this study, we have studied the kinetic stability of hexasilabenzene Si₆ H₆ and its derivatives, that is, decasilanaphthalene Si₁₀ H₈ and Li-substituted hexasilabenzene Si₆ Li₆ , theoretically by the artificial force induced reaction (AFIR) method combined with the rate constant matrix contraction (RCMC) method. Molecular design was further conducted to extend the unimolecular lifetime of hexasilabenzene derivatives. Although both Si₁₀ H₈ and Si₆ Li₆ were shown to possess shorter lifetimes than Si₆ H₆ , we found that the lifetimes of Si₆ Li₆ changed depending on arrangements of Li atoms around the monocyclic Si₆ backbone. Based on this knowledge, we found that a compound of an atomic composition Si₆ H₄ Li₂ with a planar, monocyclic Si₆ backbone has a relatively long unimolecular lifetime. Moreover, substitution of the two Li atoms by Na atoms further increased the lifetime.

Triple Bonds Between Iron and Heavier Group 15 Elements in AFe(CO)3- (A=As, Sb, Bi) Complexes

Heteronuclear transition-metal-main-group-element carbonyl complexes of AsFe(CO)₃^- , SbFe(CO)₃^- , and BiFe(CO)₃^- were produced by a laser vaporization supersonic ion source in the gas phase, and were studied by mass-selected IR photodissociation spectroscopy and advanced quantum chemistry methods. These complexes have C_3v structures with all of the carbonyl ligands bonded on the iron center, and feature covalent triple bonds between bare Group 15 elements and Fe(CO)₃^- . Chemical bonding analyses on the whole series of AFe(CO)₃^- (A=N, P, As, Sb, Bi, Mc) complexes indicate that the valence orbitals involved in the triple bonds are hybridized 3d and 4p atomic orbitals of iron, leading to an unusual (dp-p) type of transition-metal-main-group-element multiple bonding. The σ-type three-orbital interaction between Fe 3d/4p and Group 15 np valence orbitals plays an important role in the bonding and stability of the heavier AFe(CO)₃^- (A=As, Sb, Bi) complexes.

Structures and electronic properties of B2Si6−/0/+: anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations

The lowest-energy structures of B₂Si₆^q(q= −1, 0, +1) clusters are a peculiar structure with a silicon atom hanging over a distorted bowl-like B₂Si₅framework. It is characterized with σ or π delocalization in chemical bonding.

Structures and chemical properties of silicene: unlike graphene

The discovery of graphene and its remarkable and exotic properties have aroused interest in other elements and molecules that form 2D atomic layers, such as metal chalcogenides, transition metal oxides, boron nitride, silicon, and germanium. Silicene and germanene, the Si and Ge counterparts of graphene, have interesting fundamental physical properties with potential applications in technology. For example, researchers expect that silicene will be relatively easy to incorporate within existing silicon-based electronics. In this Account, we summarize the challenges and progress in the field of silicene research. Theoretical calculations have predicted that silicene possesses graphene-like properties such as massless Dirac fermions that carry charge and the quantum spin Hall effect. Researchers are actively exploring the physical and chemical properties of silicene and tailoring it for wide variety of applications. The symmetric buckling in each of the six-membered rings of silicene differentiates it from graphene and imparts a variety of interesting properties with potential technological applications. The pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) distortion breaks the symmetry and leads to the buckling in silicenes. In graphene, the two sublattice structures are equivalent, which does not allow for the opening of the band gap by an external electric field. However, in silicene where the neighboring Si atoms are displaced alternatively perpendicular to the plane, the intrinsic buckling permits a band gap opening in silicene in the presence of external electric field. Silicene's stronger spin orbit coupling than graphene has far reaching applications in spintronic devices. Because silicon prefers sp(3) hybridization over sp(2), hydrogenation is much easier in silicene. The hydrogenation of silicene to form silicane opens the band gap and increases the puckering angle. Lithiation can suppress the pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion in silicene and hence can flatten silicene's structure while opening the band gap. So far, chemists have not successfully synthesized and characterized a free-standing silicene. But recently chemists have successfully produced silicene sheets and nanoribbons over various substrates such as silver, diboride thin films, and iridium. The supporting substrate critically controls the electronic properties of silicene, and the match of the appropriate support and its use is critical in applications of silicene.
