Single-electron uranyl reduction by a rare-earth cation

Unsymmetric Co-Facial "Salixpyrrole" Hydrogen Evolution Catalysts: Two Metals are Better than One

Designing ligand architectures that can mimic enzyme active sites is a promising approach for developing efficient small molecule activation catalysts for sustainable energy applications. Some key design features include chemically distinct binding pockets for multiple metal centers and a three-dimensional structure that controls the positioning of catalytic sites. With these principles in mind, mono- and bimetallic unsymmetric cofacial palladium complexes, 2 and 3, respectively, bearing ligands with calixpyrrole and salen coordination sites, or "salixpyrrole" ligands, are reported. These species were accessed in a straightforward Schiff-base reaction with appreciable yields. In addition, both 2 and 3 were found to be active hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts using para-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as the proton source. The two salixpyrrole species displayed different mechanisms of action, with 2 showing a second-order dependence on acid concentration, whereas 3 exhibited a first-order dependence. Moreover, the bimetallic catalyst was significantly more efficient, with higher turnover frequencies, 4640 s-1 vs 1680 s-1 for 2, and lower overpotentials, 0.39 V vs 0.69 V for 2. The results reported herein provide proof-of-concept that bimetallic catalysts with chemically distinct binding sites demonstrate enhanced catalytic properties in comparison to monometallic or symmetric analogues.

A Spectroscopic and Computational Evaluation of Uranyl Oxo Engagement with Transition Metal Cations

We report the synthesis and characterization of five novel Cd2+/UO22+ heterometallic complexes that feature Cd-oxo distances ranging from 78 to 171% of the sum of the van der Waals radii for these atoms. This work marks an extension of our previously reported Pb2+/UO22+ and Ag+/UO22+ complexes, yet with much more pronounced structural and spectroscopic effects resulting from Cd-oxo interactions. We observe a major shift in the U═O symmetric stretch and significant uranyl bond length asymmetry. The ρbcp values calculated using Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) support the asymmetry displayed in the structural data and indicate a decrease in covalent character in U═O bonds with close Cd-oxo contacts, more so than in related compounds containing Pb2+ and Ag+. Second-order perturbation theory (SOPT) analysis reveals that O spx → Cd s is the most significant orbital overlap and U═O bonding and antibonding orbitals also contribute to the interaction (U═O σ/π → Cd d and Cd s → U═O σ/π*). The overall stabilization energies for these interactions were lower than those in previously reported Pb2+ cations, yet larger than related Ag+ compounds. Analysis of the equatorial coordination sphere of the Cd2+/UO22+ compounds (along with Pb2+/UO22+ complexes) reveals that 7-coordinate uranium favors closer, stronger Mn+-oxo contacts. These results indicate that U═O bond strength tuning is possible with judicious choice of metal cations for oxo interactions and equatorial ligand coordination.

A binuclear guanidinate yttrium carbyne complex: unique reactivity toward unsaturated C-N, C-O and C-S bonds

A guanidinato-stabilized binuclear yttrium carbyne complex [(PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2]2Y2(μ2-Me)(AlMe3)2(μ4-CH) (1) was synthesized via C-H bond activation and its versatile reactivities were investigated. Complex 1 underwent σ-bond metathesis with PhSSPh and nucleophilic addition with PhCN to form the corresponding yttrium thiolate complex 3 and aza-allyl complex 4 respectively. Additionally, the rare yttrium carbide complex 5 was also prepared by treatment of complex 1 with S8. Interestingly, in the reaction with PhNCS, the C[double bond, length as m-dash]S double bond was cleaved, followed by C-H bond activation to give the yttrium sulfide complex 7 with a ketenimine dianion ligand. Unexpectedly, the reaction of complex 1 with CO (1 atm) resulted in deoxygenative coupling of CO, to afford mono- or dioxo-yttrium complexes at different temperatures. The mechanism of the possible formation processes of complexes 3 and 9 was elucidated by DFT calculations.

A spectroscopic, structural, and computational study of Ag-oxo interactions in Ag+/UO22+ complexes

Twelve novel Ag⁺/UO₂²⁺ heterometallic complexes have been prepared and characterized via structural, spectroscopic, and computational methods to probe the effects of Ag-oxo interactions on bonding and photophysical properties of the uranyl cation. Structural characterization reveals Ag-oxo interaction distances ranging from 2.475(3) Å to 4.287(4) Å. These interactions were probed using luminescence and Raman spectroscopy which displayed little effect on the luminescence intensity and the energy of the Raman active UO symmetric stretch peak as compared to previously reported Pb-oxo interactions. Computational efforts via density functional theory-based natural bond orbital analysis revealed that the highest stabilization energy associated with the Ag-oxo interaction had a value of only 11.03 kcal mol^-1 and that all other energy values fell at 7.05 kcal mol^-1 or below indicating weaker interactions relative to those previously reported for Pb²⁺/UO₂²⁺ heterometallic compounds. In contrast, quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis of bond critical point electron density values indicated higher electron density in Ag-oxo interactions as compared to Pb-oxo interactions which suggests more covalent character with the Ag⁺. Overall, this data indicates that Ag⁺ has a less significant effect on UO₂²⁺ bonding and photophysical properties as compared to other Pb²⁺, likely due to the high polarizability of the cation.

Synthesis and Characterization of Pyridine Dipyrrolide Uranyl Complexes

The first actinide complexes of the pyridine dipyrrolide (PDP) ligand class, (^MesPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF) and (^Cl2PhPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF), are reported as the U^VI uranyl adducts of the bulky aryl substituted pincers (^MesPDP^Ph)^2- and (^Cl2PhPDP^Ph)^2- (derived from 2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (H₂^MesPDP^Ph, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), and 2,6-bis(5-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (H₂^Cl2PhPDP^Ph, Cl₂Ph = 2,6-dichlorophenyl), respectively). Following the in situ deprotonation of the proligand with lithium hexamethyldisilazide to generate the corresponding dilithium salts (e.g., Li₂^ArPDP^Ph, Ar = Mes of Cl₂Ph), salt metathesis with [UO₂Cl₂(THF)₂]₂ afforded both compounds in moderate yields. The characterization of each species has been undertaken by a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including combustion analysis, infrared, electronic absorption, and NMR spectroscopies. In both complexes, single-crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed a distorted octahedral geometry in the solid state, enforced by the bite angle of the rigid meridional (^ArPDP^Ph)^2- pincer ligand. The electrochemical analysis of both compounds by cyclic voltammetry in tetrahydrofuran (THF) reveals rich redox profiles, including events assigned as U^VI/U^V redox couples. A time-dependent density functional theory study has been performed on (^MesPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF) and provides insight into the nature of the transitions that comprise its electronic absorption spectrum.

Mono- and Disamarium Azacryptand Complexes: A Platform for Cooperative Rare-Earth Metal Chemistry

Mono- (H₃LSm) and disamarium complexes (LSm₂) were prepared by reaction of the azacryptand N[(CH₂)₂NHCH₂-p-C₆H₄CH₂NH(CH₂)₂]₃N (H₆L) with 1 or 2 equiv of Sm[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃, respectively. The disamarium complex features free coordination sites on both metal centers available for bridging ligands shielded by phenylenes from tetrahydrofuran (THF) coordination. The reaction of LSm₂ with KCN and 18-crown-6 yielded the adduct [LSm₂-μ-η¹:η¹-CN][K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂] featuring a bridging cyanide. The complexes were characterized by crystallography, electrochemical analysis, NMR, and optical spectroscopy, and the effective magnetic moments were determined via the Evans method.

First examples of rare-earth metal azacryptand complexes are presented in the form of mono- and dinuclear samarium compounds, which can be prepared selectively. The bridging phenylenes of the azacryptand ligand prevent THF coordination to the samarium ions and provide available binding sites within the complexes. We investigated cyanide coordination using the disamarium complex to demonstrate the utility of the vacant intermetallic space for binding small molecules.

Heterobimetallic uranyl(VI) alkoxides of lanthanoids: formation through simple ligand exchange

Lanthanoid and actinoid silylamides are versatile starting materials. Herein we show how a simple ligand exchange with tert-butanol leads to the formation of the first trimeric heterobimetallic uranyl(VI)-lanthanoid(III) alkoxide complexes. The μ³ coordination of the endogenous uranyl oxo atom results in a significant elongation of the bond length and a significant deviation from the linear uranyl arrangement.

Pb-Oxo Interactions in Uranyl Hybrid Materials: A Combined Experimental and Computational Analysis of Bonding and Spectroscopic Properties

Reported are the syntheses and characterization of six new heterometallic UO₂²⁺/Pb²⁺ compounds. These materials feature rare instances of M-oxo interactions, which influence the bonding properties of the uranyl cation. The spectroscopic effects of these interactions were measured using luminescence and Raman spectroscopy. Computational density functional theory-based natural bonding orbital and quantum theory of atoms in molecules methods indicate interactions arise predominantly through charge transfer between cationic units via the electron-donating uranyl O sp^x lone pair orbitals and electron-accepting Pb²⁺ p orbitals. The interaction strength varies as a function of Pb-oxo interaction distance and angle with energy values ranging from 0.47 kcal/mol in the longer contacts to 21.94 kcal/mol in the shorter contacts. Uranyl units with stronger interactions at the oxo display an asymmetric bond weakening and a loss of covalent character in the U═O bonds interacting closely with the Pb²⁺ ion. Luminescence quenching is observed in cases in which strong Pb-oxo interactions are present and is accompanied by red-shifting of the uranyl symmetric Raman stretch. Changes to inner sphere uranyl bonding manifest as a weakening of the U═O bond as a result of interaction with the Pb²⁺ ion. Comprehensive evaluation of the effects of metal ions on uranyl spectra supports modeling efforts probing uranyl bonding and may inform applications such as forensic signatures.

Differential uranyl(v) oxo-group bonding between the uranium and metal cations from groups 1, 2, 4, and 12; a high energy resolution X-ray absorption, computational, and synthetic study

Uranyl Pacman takes them all: the bonding of s- and d-block cations to uranyl is compared by experiment, spectroscopy and theory.

The uranyl(vi) ‘Pacman’ complex [(UO₂)(py)(H₂L)] A (L = polypyrrolic Schiff-base macrocycle) is reduced by Cp₂Ti(η²-Me₃SiC Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CSiMe₃) and [Cp₂TiCl]₂ to oxo-titanated uranyl(v) complexes [(py)(Cp₂Ti^IIIOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 1 and [(ClCp₂Ti^IVOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 2. Combination of Zr^II and Zr^IV synthons with A yields the first Zr^IV–uranyl(v) complex, [(ClCp₂ZrOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 3. Similarly, combinations of Ae⁰ and Ae^II synthons (Ae = alkaline earth) afford the mono-oxo metalated uranyl(v) complexes [(py)₂(ClMgOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 4, [(py)₂(thf)₂(ICaOUO)(py) (H₂L)] 5; the zinc complexes [(py)₂(XZnOUO)(py)(H₂L)] (X = Cl 6, I 7) are formed in a similar manner. In contrast, the direct reactions of Rb or Cs metal with A generate the first mono-rubidiated and mono-caesiated uranyl(v) complexes; monomeric [(py)₃(RbOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 8 and hexameric [(MOUO)(py)(H₂L)]₆ (M = Rb 8b or Cs 9). In these uranyl(v) complexes, the pyrrole N–H atoms show strengthened hydrogen-bonding interactions with the endo-oxos, classified computationally as moderate-strength hydrogen bonds. Computational DFT MO (density functional theory molecular orbital) and EDA (energy decomposition analysis), uranium M₄ edge HR-XANES (High Energy Resolution X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) and 3d4f RIXS (Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering) have been used (the latter two for the first time for uranyl(v) in 7 (ZnI)) to compare the covalent character in the U^V–O and O–M bonds and show the 5f orbitals in uranyl(vi) complex A are unexpectedly more delocalised than in the uranyl(v) 7 (ZnI) complex. The O_exo–Zn bonds have a larger covalent contribution compared to the Mg–O_exo/Ca–O_exo bonds, and more covalency is found in the U–O_exo bond in 7 (ZnI), in agreement with the calculations.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

Uranyl to Uranium(IV) Conversion through Manipulation of Axial and Equatorial Ligands

The controlled manipulation of the axial oxo and equatorial halide ligands in the uranyl dipyrrin complex, UO₂Cl(L), allows the uranyl reduction potential to be shifted by 1.53 V into the range accessible to naturally occurring reductants that are present during uranium remediation and storage processes. Abstraction of the equatorial halide ligand to form the uranyl cation causes a 780 mV positive shift in the U^V/U^IV reduction potential. Borane functionalization of the axial oxo groups causes the spontaneous homolysis of the equatorial U-Cl bond and a further 750 mV shift of this potential. The combined effect of chloride loss and borane coordination to the oxo groups allows reduction of U^VI to U^IV by H₂ or other very mild reductants such as Cp*₂Fe. The reduction with H₂ is accompanied by a B-C bond cleavage process in the oxo-coordinated borane.

Controlling uranyl oxo group interactions to group 14 elements using polypyrrolic Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands

Heterodinuclear uranyl/group 14 complexes of the aryl- and anthracenyl-linked Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands L^Me and L^A were synthesised by reaction of UO₂(H₂L) with M{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂ (M = Ge, Sn, Pb). For complexes of the anthracenyl-linked ligand (L^A) the group 14 metal sits out of the N₄-donor plane by up to 0.7 Å resulting in relatively short MOUO distances which decrease down the group; however, the solid state structures and IR spectroscopic analyses suggest little interaction occurs between the oxo and group 14 metal. In contrast, the smaller aryl-linked ligand (L^Me) enforces greater interaction between the metals; only the Pb^II complex was cleanly accessible although this complex was relatively unstable in the presence of HN(SiMe₃)₂ and some organic oxidants. In this case, the equatorial coordination of pyridine-N-oxide causes a 0.08 Å elongation of the endo UO bond and a clear interaction of the uranyl ion with the Pb(ii) cation in the second donor compartment.

Organometallic Neptunium Chemistry

Fifty years have passed since the foundation of organometallic neptunium chemistry, and yet only a handful of complexes have been reported, and even fewer have been fully characterized. Yet, increasingly, combined synthetic/spectroscopic/computational studies are demonstrating how covalently bonding, soft, carbocyclic organometallic ligands provide an excellent platform for advancing the fundamental understanding of the differences in orbital contributions and covalency in f-block metal-ligand bonding. Understanding the subtleties is the key to the safe handling and separations of the highly radioactive nuclei. This review describes the complexes that have been synthesized to date and presents a critical assessment of the successes and difficulties in their analysis and the bonding information they have provided. Because of increasing recent efforts to start new Np-capable air-sensitive inorganic chemistry laboratories, the importance of radioactivity, the basics of Np decay and its ramifications (including the radiochemical synthesis of one organometallic compound), and the available anhydrous starting materials are also surveyed. The review also highlights a range of instances in which important differences in the chemical behavior between Np and its closest neighbors, uranium and plutonium, are found.

Axially Symmetric U-O-Ln- and U-O-U-Containing Molecules from the Control of Uranyl Reduction with Simple f-Block Halides

The reduction of U^VI uranyl halides or amides with simple Ln^II or U^III salts forms highly symmetric, linear, oxo-bridged trinuclear U^V /Ln^III /U^V , Ln^III /U^IV /Ln^III , and U^IV /U^IV /U^IV complexes or linear Ln^III /U^V polymers depending on the stoichiometry and solvent. The reactions can be tuned to give the products of one- or two-electron uranyl reduction. The reactivity and magnetism of these compounds are discussed in the context of using a series of strongly oxo-coupled homo- and heterometallic poly(f-block) chains to better understand fundamental electronic structure in the f-block.

Assessing crystal field and magnetic interactions in diuranium-μ-chalcogenide triamidoamine complexes with UIV-E-UIV cores (E = S, Se, Te): implications for determining the presence or absence of actinide-actinide magnetic exchange

We report the synthesis and characterisation of a family of diuranium(iv)-μ-chalcogenide complexes including a detailed examination of their electronic structures and magnetic behaviours. Treatment of [U(Tren^TIPS)] [1, Tren^TIPS = N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₃] with Ph₃PS, selenium or tellurium affords the diuranium(iv)-sulfide, selenide, and telluride complexes [{U(Tren^TIPS)}₂(μ-E)] (E = S, 2; Se, 5; Te, 6). Complex 2 is also formed by treatment of [U(Tren^TIPS){OP(NMe₂)₃}] (3) with Ph₃PS, whereas treatment of 3 with elemental sulfur gives the diuranium(iv)-persulfido complex [{U(Tren^TIPS)}₂(μ-η²:η²-S₂)] (4). Complexes 2-6 have been variously characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, and optical spectroscopies, room temperature Evans and variable temperature SQUID magnetometry, elemental analyses, and complete active space self consistent field spin orbit calculations. The combined characterisation data present a self-consistent picture of the electronic structure and magnetism of 2, 5, and 6, leading to the conclusion that single-ion crystal field effects, and not diuranium magnetic coupling, are responsible for features in their variable-temperature magnetisation data. The presence of magnetic coupling is often implied and sometimes quantified by such data, and so this study highlights the importance of evaluating other factors, such as crystal field effects, that can produce similar magnetic observables, and to thus avoid misassignments of such phenomena.

Recent advances in structural studies of heterometallic uranyl-containing coordination polymers and polynuclear closed species

A survey is given of recent original structural results on heterometallic species incorporating uranyl ions, particularly with carboxylate ligands.

Synthesis and SMM behaviour of trinuclear versus dinuclear 3d–5f uranyl(v)–cobalt(ii) cation–cation complexes

Trinuclear versus dinuclear heterodimetallic U^VO₂⁺⋯Co²⁺ complexes were selectively assembled via a cation–cation interaction by tuning the ligand. The trimeric complex, exhibits magnetic exchange and slow relaxation providing the first example of a U–Co exchange-coupled SMM.

Exploring the catalytic activity of Lewis-acidic uranyl complexes in the nucleophilic acyl substitution of acid anhydrides

Uranyl(vi) ion is a strongly hard Lewis-acid and plays a catalytic role in the nucleophilic acyl substitution of acid anhydrides.

Subtle Interactions and Electron Transfer between U(III) , Np(III) , or Pu(III) and Uranyl Mediated by the Oxo Group

A dramatic difference in the ability of the reducing An(III) center in AnCp3 (An=U, Np, Pu; Cp=C5 H5 ) to oxo-bind and reduce the uranyl(VI) dication in the complex [(UO2 )(THF)(H2 L)] (L="Pacman" Schiff-base polypyrrolic macrocycle), is found and explained. These are the first selective functionalizations of the uranyl oxo by another actinide cation. At-first contradictory electronic structural data are explained by combining theory and experiment. Complete one-electron transfer from Cp3 U forms the U(IV) -uranyl(V) compound that behaves as a U(V) -localized single molecule magnet below 4 K. The extent of reduction by the Cp3 Np group upon oxo-coordination is much less, with a Np(III) -uranyl(VI) dative bond assigned. Solution NMR and NIR spectroscopy suggest Np(IV) U(V) but single-crystal X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetometry suggest a Np(III) -U(VI) assignment. DFT-calculated Hirshfeld charge and spin density analyses suggest half an electron has transferred, and these explain the strongly shifted NMR spectra by spin density contributions at the hydrogen nuclei. The Pu(III) -U(VI) interaction is too weak to be observed in THF solvent, in agreement with calculated predictions.

Relativistic DFT and experimental studies of mono- and bis-actinyl complexes of an expanded Schiff-base polypyrrole macrocycle

Relativistic DFT calculations present accurate geometries of complexes and redox properties, confirmed by the newly-developed experimental syntheses.

The Renaissance of Non-Aqueous Uranium Chemistry

Prior to the year 2000, non-aqueous uranium chemistry mainly involved metallocene and classical alkyl, amide, or alkoxide compounds as well as established carbene, imido, and oxo derivatives. Since then, there has been a resurgence of the area, and dramatic developments of supporting ligands and multiply bonded ligand types, small-molecule activation, and magnetism have been reported. This Review 1) introduces the reader to some of the specialist theories of the area, 2) covers all-important starting materials, 3) surveys contemporary ligand classes installed at uranium, including alkyl, aryl, arene, carbene, amide, imide, nitride, alkoxide, aryloxide, and oxo compounds, 4) describes advances in the area of single-molecule magnetism, and 5) summarizes the coordination and activation of small molecules, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, dinitrogen, white phosphorus, and alkanes.

Towards dipyrrins: oxidation and metalation of acyclic and macrocyclic Schiff-base dipyrromethanes

Oxidation of acyclic Schiff-base dipyrromethanes cleanly results in dipyrrins, whereas the macrocyclic 'Pacman' analogues either decompose or form new dinuclear copper(ii) complexes that are inert to ligand oxidation; the unhindered hydrogen substituent at the meso-carbon allows new structural motifs to form.

Control of oxo-group functionalization and reduction of the uranyl ion

Uranyl complexes of a large, compartmental N8-macrocycle adopt a rigid, "Pacman" geometry that stabilizes the U(V) oxidation state and promotes chemistry at a single uranyl oxo-group. We present here new and straightforward routes to singly reduced and oxo-silylated uranyl Pacman complexes and propose mechanisms that account for the product formation, and the byproduct distributions that are formed using alternative reagents. Uranyl(VI) Pacman complexes in which one oxo-group is functionalized by a single metal cation are activated toward single-electron reduction. As such, the addition of a second equivalent of a Lewis acidic metal complex such as MgN″2 (N″ = N(SiMe3)2) forms a uranyl(V) complex in which both oxo-groups are Mg functionalized as a result of Mg-N bond homolysis. In contrast, reactions with the less Lewis acidic complex [Zn(N″)Cl] favor the formation of weaker U-O-Zn dative interactions, leading to reductive silylation of the uranyl oxo-group in preference to metalation. Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational analysis of these reactions and of oxo-metalated products isolated by other routes have allowed us to propose mechanisms that account for pathways to metalation or silylation of the exo-oxo-group.

Catalytic one-electron reduction of uranyl(VI) to Group 1 uranyl(V) complexes via Al(III) coordination

Reactions between the uranyl(VI) Pacman complex [(UO2)(py)(H2L)] of the Schiff-base polypyrrolic macrocycle L and Tebbe's reagent or DIBAL result in the first selective reductive functionalisation of the uranyl oxo by Al to form [(py)(R2AlOUO)(py)(H2L)] (R = Me or (i)Bu). The clean displacement of the oxo-coordinated Al(III) by Group 1 cations has enabled the development of a one-pot, DIBAL-catalysed reduction of the U(VI) uranyl complexes to a series of new, mono-oxo alkali-metal-functionalised uranyl(V) complexes [(py)3(MOUO)(py)(H2L)] (M = Li, Na, K).
