Abstract
We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavelength microstrip line resonator realized using epitaxially grown copper films on single crystal Al2O3 substrates. The one-dimensional microstrip line resonator exhibits a quality factor of more than 200 at room temperature, close to the upper limit determined by radiation losses. The surface characterizations of the copper strip of the resonator by atomic force microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy show that the surface is atomically clean, flat, and single crystalline. Measuring the ESR spectrum at 15 K from a few nm thick molecular film of YPc2, we find a continuous-wave ESR sensitivity of 2.6 × 1011 spins/G · Hz1/2, indicating that a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.9 G · Hz1/2 is expected from a monolayer of YPc2 molecules. Advanced pulsed ESR experimental capabilities, including dynamical decoupling and electron-nuclear double resonance, are demonstrated using free radicals diluted in a glassy matrix.

Abstract
Aquaculture wastewater contained large amounts of pathogenic microorganisms, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). In this study, the nutrient recoveries and wastewater disinfection were simultaneously achieved using Mg-coconut shell carbon (Mg-CSC). The composites were prepared by a ball milling method. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was in-situ generated by the dissolved oxygen reduction driven by Mg corrosion on the CSC surface, which inactivated the microorganisms. Besides that, Mg corrosion provided sufficient Mg ions and appropriate pH conditions for struvite formation. The results show that 5.4-log E.coli removal was achieved under different conditions. Improving the Mg/CSC ratio and composite dosage could shorten the time required for disinfection. In addition to H2O2, singlet oxygen played a critical role. Reactive oxygen species destroyed the cellular structure and killed the bacteria. The recoveries of NH4+-Nand P under certain conditions were about 60% and 91%, respectively. An increased composite dosage could improve the recovery ratio of P. Excessive dosages were not beneficial for removing NH4+-N. The characterization result revealed that struvite crystals were the main precipitates on the CSC surface. The Mg-CSC composites also revealed satisfied nutrient recovery and disinfection performances in the real aquaculture wastewater treatment process.

Abstract
Room-temperature molecular oxygen (O2) dissociation is challenging toward chemical reactions due to its triplet ground-state and spin-forbidden characteristic. Herein, we demonstrate that BiOCl of oxygen and chlorine dual vacancies can photocatalytically dissociate O2 into monatomic reactive oxygen (•O-) for the ring opening of aromatic refractory pollutants toward deep oxidation. The electron-rich and geometry-flexible dual vacancies of oxygen and chlorine remarkably lengthen the O-O bond of adsorbed O2 from 1.21 to 2.74 Å, resulting in the rapid O2 dissociation and the subsequent •O- formation. During the photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethazine, the in situ-formed •O- plays an indispensable role in breaking the critical intermediate of pyrimidine containing a stubborn aromatic heterocyclic ring, thus facilitating the overall mineralization. More importantly, BiOCl of oxygen and chlorine dual vacancies is also superior to its monovacancy counterparts on the degradation of other refractory pollutants containing conjugated six-membered rings, including p-chlorophenol, p-chloronitrobenzene, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and p-nitrobenzoic acid. This study sheds light on the importance of sophisticated defects for regulating the O2 activation manner and deliveries a novel O2 activation approach for environmental remediation with solar energy.

Abstract
Conventional oxygen electrocatalysts are expensive for industrial use. Transition metal oxides (TMOs), as a more economical option, have emerged as an alternative to potentially replace conventional precious metal catalysts. However, many experimental studies have suggested that although a few of the TMOs supported by conductive substrates are stable under electrocatalytic conditions, their performances are far from the industrial level, especially in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). At present, their ORR and also oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances are still not well understood. In this study, we analyze the effects of the support on ORR/OER adsorbate binding to TMO catalysts. We show that for wide bandgap TMOs (e.g., ZrO2 and HfO2), the use of a metal support leads to a marked enhancement of the adsorbate binding strengths due to a significant induced electron charge gain in the adsorbates, and a considerable up-shift in the ORR/OER adsorbate binding scaling relation. Meanwhile, these support-induced effects are significant even with relatively thick TMO layers on a thin metal substrate, requiring a large thickness cutoff to eliminate the influence. In contrast, the metal-like TMOs (e.g., PdO2 and SnO2) are less affected by the metal support. This study suggests that the thickness of the TMO layer can be used to tune the adsorption properties of electronegative adsorbates and thus provides an interesting new design option for oxygen electrocatalysis.

Abstract
Ultrathin dielectric/insulating films on metals are often used as decoupling layers to allow for the study of the electronic properties of adsorbed molecules without electronic interference from the underlying metal substrate. However, the presence of such decoupling layers may effectively change the electron donating properties of the substrate, for example, by lowering its work function and thus enhancing the charging of the molecular adsorbate layer through electron tunneling. Here, an experimental study of the charging of para-sexiphenyl (6P) on ultrathin MgO(100) films supported on Ag(100) is reported. By deliberately changing the work function of the MgO(100)/Ag(100) system, it is shown that the charge transfer (electronic coupling) into the 6P molecules can be controlled, and 6P monolayers with uncharged molecules (Schottky-Mott regime) and charged and uncharged molecules (Fermi level pinning regime) can be obtained. Furthermore, it was found that charge transfer and temperature strongly influence the orientation, conformation, and wetting behavior (physical coupling) of the 6P layers on the MgO(100) thin films.

Abstract
2D oxide nanomaterials constitute a broad range of materials, with a wide array of current and potential applications, particularly in the fields of energy storage and catalysis for sustainable energy production. Despite the many similarities in structure, composition, and synthetic methods and uses, the current literature on layered oxides is diverse and disconnected. A number of reviews can be found in the literature, but they are mostly focused on one of the particular subclasses of 2D oxides. This review attempts to bridge the knowledge gap between individual layered oxide types by summarizing recent developments in all important 2D oxide systems including supported ultrathin oxide films, layered clays and double hydroxides, layered perovskites, and novel 2D-zeolite-based materials. Particular attention is paid to the underlying similarities and differences between the various materials, and the subsequent challenges faced by each research community. The potential of layered oxides toward future applications is critically evaluated, especially in the areas of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, biomass conversion, and fine chemical synthesis. Attention is also paid to corresponding novel 3D materials that can be obtained via sophisticated engineering of 2D oxides.

Abstract
Activating the O2 molecule is at the heart of a variety of technological applications, most prominently in energy conversion schemes including solid oxide fuel cells, electrolysis, and catalysis. Perovskite oxides, both traditionally-used and novel formulations, are the prime candidates in established and emerging energy devices. This work shows that the as-cleaved and unmodified CaO-terminated (001) surface of Ca3Ru2O7, a Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite, supports a full monolayer of superoxide ions, O2-, when exposed to molecular O2. The electrons for activating the molecule are transferred from the subsurface RuO2 layer. Theoretical calculations using both, density functional theory (DFT) and more accurate methods (RPA), predict the adsorption of O2- with Eads = 0.72 eV and provide a thorough analysis of the charge transfer. Non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) are used to resolve single molecules and confirm the predicted adsorption structures. Local contact potential difference (LCPD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on the full monolayer of O2- confirm the negative charge state of the molecules. The present study reports the rare case of an oxide surface without dopants, defects, or low-coordinated sites readily activating molecular O2.

Abstract
Seeking a simple and moderate route to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antibiosis is of great interest and challenge. This work demonstrates that molecule transition and electron rearrangement processes can directly occur only through chemisorption interaction between the adsorbed O2 and high-energy {111} facet-exposed MgO with abundant surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs), hence producing singlet oxygen and superoxide anion radicals without light irradiation. These ROS were confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, in situ Raman, and scavenger experiments. Furthermore, heat plays a crucial role for the electron transfer process to accelerate the formation of ·O2-, which is verified by temperature kinetic experiments of nitro blue tetrazolium reduction in the dark. Therefore, the presence of oxygen vacancy can be considered as an intensification of the activation process. The designed MgO is acquired in one step via constructing a reduction atmosphere during the combustion reaction process, which has an ability similar to that of noble metal Pd to activate molecular oxygen and can be used as an effective bacteriocide in the dark.

Abstract
Controlling the dissociation of single water molecule on an insulating surface plays a crucial role in many catalytic reactions. In this work, we have identified the enhanced chemical reactivity of ultrathin MgO(100) films deposited on Mo(100) substrate that causes water dissociation. We reveal that the ability to split water on insulating surface closely depends on the lattice mismatch between ultrathin films and the underlying substrate, and substrate-induced in-plane tensile strain dramatically results in water dissociation on MgO(100). Three dissociative adsorption configurations of water with lower energy are predicted, and the structural transition going from molecular form to dissociative form is almost barrierless. Our results provide an effective avenue to achieve water dissociation at the single-molecule level and shed light on how to tune the chemical reactions of insulating surfaces by choosing the suitable substrates.

Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy has developed into a powerful tool for the characterization of conductive surfaces, for which the overlap of tip and sample wave functions determines the image contrast. On insulating layers, as the CaO thin film grown on Mo(001) investigated here, direct overlap between initial and final states is not enabled anymore and electrons are transported via hopping through the conduction-band states of the oxide. Carrier transport is accompanied by strong phonon excitations in this case, imprinting an oscillatory signature on the differential conductance spectra of the system. The phonons show a characteristic spatial dependence and become softer around lattice irregularities in the oxide film, such as dislocation lines.

Abstract
Selected areas of heterogeneous catalysis involving nanoporous oxides in the context of clean technology, green chemistry and sustainability are highlighted in this overview. So also is the potential of oxidic membranes in the context of producing hydrogen from water at high temperatures; and a brief survey is given of strategies that are required for the design of better oxidic photocatalysts for the conversion of visible light to H2 and O2. Aspects of physico-chemical characterization of advanced oxidic materials are also outlined.
