Formation of Linear Supramolecular Polymers That Is Driven by CH⋅⋅⋅π Interactions in Solution and in the Solid State

Construction of Supramolecular Polymer Network Elastomers Based on Pillar[5]arene/Alkyl Chain Host-Guest Interactions

As a special kind of supramolecular compound with many favorable properties, pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) show potential application in many fields. Although we have come a long way using pillar[n]arene to prepare SPNs and construct a series of smart materials, it remains a challenge to enhance the mechanical strength of pillar[n]arene-based SPNs. To address this issue, a new supramolecular regulation strategy was developed, which could precisely control the preparation of pillar[n]arene-based SPN materials with excellent mechanical properties by adjusting the polymer network structures. Specifically, we utilized the host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene and the alkyl chain of butyl acrylate monomer to form a supramolecular polymer network and achieved the transformation of different states by regulating the cross-linking density of the polymer networks. Additionally, the polymer networks exhibited good stimuli responsiveness as well as excellent dynamic properties and reconfigurable characteristics through a temperature change and the addition of competitive hosts or guests. The research provided new possibilities for the development of polymer materials.

Non-Covalent Self-Assembly Behaviors Based on Racemic Binaphthol Scaffolds

Understanding the fundamental mechanisms involved in the construction and organization of multi-scale structures is crucial for the design and manufacture of complex functional systems with long-range molecular arrangements. In this paper, a series of compounds have been synthesized using racemic binaphthols as the skeleton and a Suzuki coupling reaction for derivatization at the 6,6' positions, which resulted in various structures bearing different functional groups. Control over the self-assembly of these racemic binaphthol derivatives was successfully achieved by adjusting the types and positions of the substituents in the parent binaphthol compound, which revealed the key factors influencing the types of the non-covalent interactions and the self-assembly process. For example, the single-crystal structures of the resulting compounds indicated that assembly structures such as single helix and double helix based on non-traditional hydrogen bond motifs could be obtained, and fascinating non-covalent self-assembly structures such as molecular ladders and catenane discovered.

Construction of Slide-Ring Polymers Based on Pillar[5]Arene/Alkyl Chain Host-Guest Interactions

Slide-ring polymers exhibit distinctive mechanical properties, making them highly promising for applications in emerging fields such as energy storage devices and smart sensing. However, existing slide-ring polymer systems primarily rely on hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions to achieve ring-axle interlocking in aqueous phases. This reliance limits the construction of slide-ring networks mainly to water-soluble polymers, excluding a diverse range of lipophilic polymers. Therefore, it is crucial to introduce efficient construction strategies that facilitate interpenetration in organic solvents, enabling the development of diverse slide-ring polymers and expanding their range and applications. Herein, by utilizing the pillar[5]arene/alkyl chain host-guest interactions, we successfully facilitated the interpenetration of a pillar[5]arene and poly(caprolactone), enabling the efficient construction of two slide-ring polymer networks in organic solvents. One of these two slide-ring polymers demonstrates a unique network deformation mechanism along with outstanding mechanical properties compared with the control covalently cross-linked polymer network, including maximum stress (4.43 vs 1.98 MPa), maximum strain (1285 vs 330 %), and toughness (35.4 vs 3.92 MJ/m3). More importantly, this strategy of making slide-ring polymers is highly versatile, given the wide range of macrocyclic arenes and alkyl chain-containing polymers it can accommodate.

Characterizing X-Ray and Solution State Conformations for a Model Qubit System: {Cr7Ni} Ring Rotaxanes on a Mixed Metal Triangle

The synthesis of a series of [4]rotaxanes, each consisting of three [2]rotaxanes joined via a central {CrNi2} triangular linker, is reported. The resultant four [4]rotaxanes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Orientation-selective 4-pulse double electron-electron resonance (DEER) measurements between the three {Cr7Ni} rings incorporated in each [4]rotaxane reveal that each system is conformationally fluxional in solution, with the most abundant conformations found to differ significantly from the crystal structure geometry for each compound. The degree of similarity between conformations is evaluated using a novel application of the earth mover's distance analysis.

A Temperature-Sensitive Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymer Constructed by Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycle and Pillar[5]arene-Based Host-Guest Interactions

The application of thermosensitive fluorescent supramolecular polymers in advanced optical materials, chemical sensors, artificial optical devices, and external stimulus responses remains underdeveloped. In this study, we introduced a novel method for constructing a mechanically interlocked fluorescent supramolecular polymer utilizing host-guest interactions, including C-H···π interactions and π-π stacking. This polymer exhibits outstanding temperature-sensitive fluorescence properties and is environmentally friendly due to its recyclability. Leveraging the polymer's fluorescence response at critical temperature ranges, we developed a high-temperature warning device. This device utilizes the temperature-sensitive fluorescence characteristic of the polymer to indicate dangerous temperature levels, thereby demonstrating its potential in practical safety applications.

Supramolecular-macrocycle-based functional organic cocrystals

Supramolecular macrocycles, renowned for their remarkable capabilities in molecular recognition and complexation, have emerged as pivotal elements driving advancements across various innovative research fields. Cocrystal materials, an important branch within the realm of crystalline organic materials, have garnered considerable attention owing to their simple preparation methods and diverse potential applications, particularly in optics, electronics, chemical sensing and photothermal conversion. In recent years, macrocyclic entitles have been successfully brought into this field, providing an essential and complementary channel to create novel functional materials, especially those with multiple functionalities and smart stimuli-responsiveness. In this Review, we present an overview of the research efforts on functional cocrystals constructed with macrocycles, covering their design principles, preparation strategies, assembly modes, and diverse functions and applications. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives are outlined. We anticipate that this review will serve as a valuable and timely reference for researchers interested in supramolecular crystalline materials and beyond, catalyzing the emergence of more original and innovative studies in related fields.

Influence of halogen-halogen interactions in the self-assembly of pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymers

Halogen-halogen interactions play a pivotal role in the formation and stability of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we investigate the assembly dynamics and dissociation pathways of linear supramolecular polymers based on pillar[5]arene-mediated by guest halogen-halogen interactions (C-X × X-C) in both the solution and solid states. The structure of the solid-state supramolecular assembly was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The binding affinities of four different 1,4-dihalobutane guests with pillar[5]arene were investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopic titration and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The formation of the halogen-bonded linear supramolecular polymer in solution was demonstrated using diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and ITC. Our findings highlight the dependence of the dissociation process on halogen nature within the encapsulated guest, revealing that the process is entropically driven (TΔS = 27.12 kJ mol-1) and enthalpically disfavored (ΔH = 9.99 kJ mol-1). Moreover, the disassembly of supramolecular polymers promoted by N-containing compounds was investigated using 1H NMR spectroscopy and ITC, revealing that the process is driven both enthalpically (ΔH = -2.64 kJ mol-1) and entropically (TΔS = 15.70 kJ mol-1). Notably, the data suggest the formation of N⋯I bonding interactions at both ends of the inclusion guest, elucidating the intricate interplay of halogen interactions and host-guest chemistry in supramolecular polymer systems.

Solution-based Supramolecular Hierarchical Assembly of Frenkel Excitonic Nanotubes Driven by Gold Nanoparticle Formation and Temperature

Translating nature's successful design principle of solution-based supramolecular self-assembling to broad applications─ranging from renewable energy and information technology to nanomedicine─requires a fundamental understanding of supramolecular hierarchical assembly. Though the forces behind self-assembly (e.g., hydrophobicity) are known, the specific mechanism by which monomers form the hierarchical assembly still remains an open question. A crucial step toward formulating a complete mechanism is understanding not only how the monomer's specific molecular structure but also how manifold environmental conditions impact the self-assembling process. Here, we elucidate the complex correlation between the environmental self-assembling conditions and the resulting structural properties by utilizing a well-characterized model system: well-defined supramolecular Frenkel excitonic nanotubes (NTs), self-assembled from cyanine dye molecules in aqueous solution, which further self-assemble into bundled nanotubes (b-NTs). The NTs and b-NTs inhabit distinct spectroscopic signatures, which allows the use of steady-state absorption spectroscopy to monitor the transition from NTs to b-NTs directly. Specifically, we investigate the impact of temperature (ranging from 23 °C, 55 °C, 70 °C, 85 °C, up to 100 °C) during in situ formation of gold nanoparticles to determine their role in the formation of b-NTs. The considered time regime for the self-assembling process ranges from 1 min to 8 days. With our work, we contribute to a basic understanding of how environmental conditions impact solution-based hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly in both the thermodynamic and the kinetic regime.

Pillararene-Based Supramolecular Polymers for Adsorption and Separation

Supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their perfect combination of supramolecular chemistry and traditional polymer chemistry. The design and synthesis of macrocycles have driven the rapid development of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science. Pillar[n]arenes, a new generation of macrocyclic compounds possessing unique pillar-shaped structures, nano-sized cavities, multi-functionalized groups, and excellent host-guest complexation abilities, are promising candidates to construct supramolecular polymer materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent progress in the design and synthesis of pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) and illustrates their diverse applications as adsorption and separation materials. All performances are evaluated and analyzed in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and recyclability. Typically, PSPs can be categorized into three typical types according to their topologies, including linear, cross-linked, and hybrid structures. The advances made in the area of functional supramolecular polymeric adsorbents formed by new pillararene derivatives are also described in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PSPs for separation-based materials science are discussed. This review will inspire researchers in different fields and stimulate creative designs of supramolecular polymeric materials based on pillararenes and other macrocycles for effective adsorption and separation of a variety of targets.

Polymorphism and Light-Driven Forward Movement of TPE Derivative Micro-Crystal due to ArH-pi Interactions Difference

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) are two classes of opposite luminescence phenomena. It is almost impossible to show both AIE and ACQ effect simultaneously by the same molecule. However, here we report that a simple TPE derivative TAP-TPE grows into both AIE crystals and ACQ ones. It is found that equatorial, contact distance-longer and weak ArH-π interactions exist in AIE crystals while vertical, contact distance-shorter and strong ArH-π interactions appear in ACQ crystals. Theoretical calculation of electron density on the interaction atoms unveils that ACQ crystals have much larger change in electron density than AIE ones, suggesting that the intermolecular electron transfer aroused by the strong ArH-π hydrogen bonds leads to ACQ phenomenon. This result provides a new insight into the emission mechanism in aggregation state. Interestingly, due to the ArH-pi interactions difference, only one of five kinds of crystals shows rapid photochromism, and can act as multimode anti-counterfeiting materials. Very exceptionally, for the first time we find that the photochromic micrometric rod-like crystal even makes forward rolling movement as it repeatedly bends and straightens by responding to on and off of the ultraviolet light irradiation, displaying potential for photo-actuator and light-driven micro-vehicle.

Nanoparticles Based on Silver Chloride and Bambusuril[6] for the Fine-Tuning of Biological Activity

The prevalence of numerous infectious diseases has emerged as a grave concern within the realm of healthcare. Currently, the issue of antibiotic resistance is compelling scientists to explore novel treatment approaches. To combat these infectious diseases, various treatment methods have been developed, harnessing cutting-edge disinfecting nanomaterials. Among the range of metallic nanoparticles employed in medicine, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) stand out as both highly popular and well-suited for the task. They find extensive utility in cancer diagnosis and therapies and as effective antibacterial agents. The interaction between silver and bacterial cells induces significant structural and morphological alterations, ultimately leading to cell demise. In this study, nanoparticles based on silver and bambusuril[6] (BU[6]) were developed for the first time. These NPs can be used for different biomedical purposes. A simple, single-step, and effective synthesis method was employed to produce bambusuril[6]-protected silver chloride nanoparticles (BU[6]-Ag/AgCl NPs) through the complexation of BU[6] with silver nitrate. The NPs were characterized using X-ray phase analysis (XPS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). When the SEM images were examined, it was seen that the synthesized BU[6]-Ag/AgCl NPs were distributed with homogeneous sizes, and the synthesized NPs were mostly spherical and cubic. The EDS spectra of BU[6]-Ag/AgCl NPs demonstrated the presence of Ag, Cl, and all expected elements. BU[6]-Ag/AgCl NPs showed high antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus bacteria.

Applications of macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry

Macrocyclic molecules have been used in various fields owing to their guest binding properties. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry in solution can allow for precise control of complex formation. Although solution-phase host-guest complexes are easily prepared, their limited stability and processability prevent widespread application. Extending host-guest chemistry from solution to the solid state results in complexes that are generally more robust, enabling easier processing and broadened applications. Macrocyclic compounds in the solid state can encapsulate guests with larger affinities than their soluble counterparts. This is crucial for use in applications such as separation science and devices. In this Review, we summarize recent progress in macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry and discuss the basic physical chemistry of these complexes. Representative macrocycles and their solid-state complexes are explored, as well as potential applications. Finally, perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Daisy chain architectures: from discrete molecular entities to polymer materials

Daisy chain architectures, made by the self-complementary threading of an axle covalently linked to a macrocycle, represent a particularly intriguing family of supramolecular and mechanically interlocked (macro)molecules. In this review, we discuss their recent history, their modular chemical structures, and the various synthetic strategies to access them. We also detail how their internal sliding motions can be controlled and how their integration within polymers can amplify that motions up to the macroscopic scale. This overview of the literature demonstrates that the peculiar structure and dynamics of daisy chains have already strongly influenced the research on artificial molecular machines, with the potential to be implemented from nanometric switchable devices to mechanically active soft-matter materials.

Fluorophore-based host-guest assembly complexes for imaging and therapy

Recently, supramolecular chemistry with its unique properties has received considerable attention in many fields. Supramolecular fluorescent systems constructed on the basis of macrocyclic hosts are not only effective in overcoming the limitations of imaging and diagnostic reagents, but also in enhancing their performances. This paper summarizes the recent advances in supramolecular fluorescent systems based on host-guest interactions and their application in bioimaging and therapy as well as the challenges and prospects in developing novel supramolecular fluorescent systems.

Supramolecular framework membrane for precise sieving of small molecules, nanoparticles and proteins

Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

A comprehensive review on bio-mimicked multimolecular frameworks and supramolecules as scaffolds for enzyme immobilization

Immobilization depicts a propitious route to optimize the catalytic performances, efficient recovery, minimizing autocatalysis, and also augment the stabilities of enzymes, particularly in unnatural environments. In this opinion, supramolecules and multimolecular frameworks have captivated immense attention to achieve profound controllable interactions between enzyme molecules and well-defined natural or synthetic architectures to yield protein bioconjugates with high accessibility for substrate binding and enhanced enantioselectivities. This scholastic review emphasizes the possibilities of associating multimolecular complexes with biological entities via several types of interactions, namely covalent interactions, host-guest complexation, π - π ${\rm{\pi }}-{\rm{\pi }}$ interactions, intra/inter hydrogen bondings, electrostatic interactions, and so forth offers remarkable applications for the modulations of enzymes. The potential synergies between artificial supramolecular structures and biological systems are the primary concern of this pedagogical review. The majority of the research primarily focused on the dynamic biomolecule-responsive supramolecular assemblages and multimolecular architectures as ideal platforms for the recognition and modulation of proteins and cells. Embracing sustainable green demeanors of enzyme immobilizations in a quest to reinforce site-selectivity, catalytic efficiency, and structural integrality of enzymes are the contemporary requirements of the biotechnological sectors that instigate the development of novel biocatalytic systems.

Multistep sequence-controlled supramolecular polymerization by the combination of multiple self-assembly motifs

The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.

Effect of non-covalent self-dimerization on the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of mixed Cu(i) complexes

A series of six new Cu(i) complexes with ([Cu(N-{4-R}pyridine-2-yl-methanimine)(PPh₃)Br]) formulation, where R corresponds to a donor or acceptor p-substituent, have been synthesized and were used to study self-association effects on their structural and electrochemical properties. X-ray diffraction results showed that in all complexes the packing is organized from a dimer generated by supramolecular π stacking and hydrogen bonding. ¹H-NMR experiments at several concentrations showed that all complexes undergo a fast-self-association monomer-dimer equilibrium in solution, while changes in resonance frequency towards the high or low field in specific protons of the imine ligand allow establishing that dimers have similar structures to those found in the crystal. The thermodynamic parameters for this self-association process were calculated from dimerization constants determined by VT-¹H-NMR experiments for several concentrations at different temperatures. The values for K _D (4.0 to 70.0 M^-1 range), ΔH (-1.4 to -2.6 kcal mol^-1 range), ΔS (-0.2 to 2.1 cal mol^-1 K^-1 range), and ΔG ₂₉₈ (-0.8 to -2.0 kcal mol^-1 range) are of the same order and indicate that the self-dimerization process is enthalpically driven for all complexes. The electrochemical profile of the complexes shows two redox Cu(ii)/Cu(i) processes whose relative intensities are sensitive to concentration changes, indicating that both species are in chemical equilibrium, with the monomer and the dimer having different electrochemical characteristics. We associate this behaviour with the structural lability of the Cu(i) centre that allows the monomeric molecules to reorder conformationally to achieve a more adequate assembly in the non-covalent dimer. As expected, structural properties in the solid and in solution, as well as their electrochemical properties, are not correlated with the electronic parameters usually used to evaluate R substituent effects. This confirms that the properties of the Cu(i) complexes are usually more influenced by steric effects than by the inductive effects of substituents of the ligands. In fact, the results obtained showed the importance of non-covalent intermolecular interactions in the structuring of the coordination geometry around the Cu centre and in the coordinative stability to avoid dissociative equilibria.

Modular Platform of Carbohydrates-modified Supramolecular Polymers Based on Dendritic Peptide Scaffolds

Glycopeptide supramolecular polymers displaying multivalent carbohydrates are particularly suitable for immune-relevant biomaterials, due to the important functions of carbohydrates in mediating cell-cell communication and modulating immune responses. However, the diversity and complexity of carbohydrates limited the generation of glycopeptide supramolecular monomers. Thereby, a modular platform of presenting various carbohydrates, especially more complex oligosaccharides, is highly desirable but remains underexplored. Here, we first prepared the linear amphiphilic glycopeptides that self-assembled into spherical nanoparticles and worm-like nanoparticles. Furthermore, the dendritic glycopeptides that self-assembled into uniform nanorods were designed to generate modular supramolecular polymers with variable functionality, via redesigning the molecular backbone. With various functional oligosaccharide-modified supramolecular polymers, the in vitro studies further indicated that these polymers were not cytotoxic to macrophages, and significantly modulated the production of proinflammatory cytokines. These findings provide a promising platform to develop supramolecular glycopeptide biomaterials with potential applications in immunomodulation and immunotherapy.

Real-time chirality transfer monitoring from statistically random to discrete homochiral nanotubes

Real time monitoring of chirality transfer processes is necessary to better understand their kinetic properties. Herein, we monitor an ideal chirality transfer process from a statistically random distribution to a diastereomerically pure assembly in real time. The chirality transfer is based on discrete trimeric tubular assemblies of planar chiral pillar[5]arenes, achieving the construction of diastereomerically pure trimers of pillar[5]arenes through synergistic effect of ion pairing between a racemic rim-differentiated pillar[5]arene pentaacid bearing five benzoic acids on one rim and five alkyl chains on the other, and an optically resolved pillar[5]arene decaamine bearing ten amines. When the decaamine is mixed with the pentaacid, the decaamine is sandwiched by two pentaacids through ten ion pairs, initially producing a statistically random mixture of a homochiral trimer and two heterochiral trimers. The heterochiral trimers gradually dissociate and reassemble into the homochiral trimers after unit flipping of the pentaacid, leading to chirality transfer from the decaamine and producing diastereomerically pure trimers.

Imaging moiety-directed co-assembly for biodegradation control with synchronous four-modal biotracking

The complexity of existing methods for biodegradation control limits the multi-functionality of biomedical materials. It is urgent to develop simple and straightforward strategies to control the biodegradation rate with precise tracking of various parameters in real-time. Here, we show an imaging moiety-directed co-assembly strategy, in which different imaging moieties bearing non-covalent interaction sites are covalently introduced into the poly (D,l-lactic acid) (PDLLA) chain as end groups, followed by alternate non-covalent interactions with polymer chains upon compression molding. This strategy takes advantage of a variety of bonding types (including CH-π, CH-F, etc.) to firmly integrate the PDLLA chains and strongly control the biodegradation rate, making the amorphous prototype degraded much slower than higher-molecular-weight counterparts, and the local inflammatory response is insignificant. On this basis, a synchronous four-modal (X-ray computed tomography + fluorescence + photoacoustics + ultrasound) imaging was achieved on the single entity in vivo, even within a millimeter-scale thick-skin tissue. These imaging signals can precisely correlate the multi parameter variation trend of material mass, volume and molecular weight, signifying that co-assembly can be utilized to develop advanced theranostic systems. SINGLE SENTENCE SUMMARY: We developed an imaging moiety-directed co-assembly strategy to control the biodegradation rate and achieve the synchronization of real-time four-modal imaging in vivo. These imaging signals can precisely correlate the multi-parameter variation trend of material mass, volume and molecular weight, which provided comprehensive biomedical information accessing both qualitatively and quantitatively.

An AB2 -Type Hyperbranched Supramolecular Polymer Based on Calix[4]pyrrole Anion Recognition: Construction, Stimuli-Responsiveness, and Morphology Tuning

An AB₂ -type monomer comprised of a calix[4]pyrrole skeleton and alternating bis-carboxylate units is reported and used for the construction of a novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer based on anion recognition ability of calix[4]pyrrole. ¹ H-, DOSY-NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and dynamic light scattering techniques are used for the characterization of the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer exhibiting thermo-, pH-, and chemical responsiveness, as well as concentration dependent morphology tune as inferred from electron microscopy analyses. The present study enriches the field of supramolecular polymers with a new construction motif, building block, and provides a simple approach for the fabrication of smart polymer material with multi-responsiveness and -morphologies. Construction of a supramolecular framework consisting of cucurbit[8]uril and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine

We report the supramolecular self-assembly of cucurbit[8]uril(Q[8]) and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine inclusion complex. The complex is cultured in 3 M hydrochloric acid solution under CdCl2 induction conditions to obtain a new crystal, the structure of which was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The results show that the crystal belongs to the monoclinic crystal system with a C2/m space group. The host–guest interaction ratio of Q[8] and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) piperazine is 1:2.

Thiapillar[6]arene: Synthesis, Functionalization, and Properties

The design and synthesis of new macrocycles with well-defined cavities represent a promising avenue for the development of new supramolecular hosts. Moreover, the ability to diversify a macrocycle through chemical manipulations enables the fine-tuning and tailoring of properties. In this report, the synthesis and functionalization of thiapillar[6]arene, a pillar[6]arene analogue in which the bridging methylene groups are replaced by sulfurs, are described. First, we demonstrate the scalable synthesis of the parent thiapillar[6]arene. Next, the diversification of thiapillar[6]arene is demonstrated via functionalization of the phenols and oxidation of the sulfur atoms. The solid-state structures of two thiapillar[6]arene derivatives are reported, and the effect of sulfur oxidation state on the macrocyclic conformation is discussed. All sulfone derivatives described were found to demonstrate high luminescence quantum yields (ΦF = 0.43–0.66) in CH2Cl2 with emission maxima between λ = 404 and 462 nm. Lastly, assessment of the electrochemical properties of the sulfone derivatives by square-wave voltammetry revealed electron-accepting ability owing to the oxidation of the sulfur atoms, with four reduction events observed for the analogues surveyed. Overall, this work implicates thiapillar[6]arene as a modular scaffold amenable for further applications in host–guest chemistry and sensing.

Copillar[5]arene Chemistry: Synthesis and Applications

Research on pillar[n]arenes has witnessed a very quick expansion. This emerging class of functionalized macrocyclic oligoarenes not only offers host–guest properties due to the presence of the central cavity, but also presents a wide variety of covalent functionalization possibilities. This short review focuses on copillararenes, a subfamily of pillar[n]arenes. In copillararenes, at least one of the hydroquinone units bears different functional groups compared to the others. After having defined the particular features of copillararenes, this short review compares the different synthetic strategies allowing their construction. Some key applications and future perspectives are also described.

Topological-skeleton controlled chirality expression of supramolecular hyperbranched and linear polymers

The topology of polymers plays an essential role in their chemical, physical and biological properties. However, their effects on chirality-related functions remain unclear. Here, we reported the topology-controlled chirality expression in the chiral supramolecular system for the first time. Two topological supramolecular polymers, hyperbranched (HP) and linear (LP) supramolecular polymers produced by the host-guest interactions of branched and linear monomers, respectively, exhibited completely different chirality expressions despite the same molecular chirality of their monomers. Significantly, due to the branch points and strong steric hindrance existing in HP, cis-HP showed an enhanced and sign-inverted Cotton effect in the n-π* bands compared with cis-LP, as a result that the distinctive chirality induction and transfer were controlled by the topological skeletons. This topology-controlled chirality induction and transfer in the photoswitchable supramolecular polymers not only enables us to elucidate the in-depth effects of topology on the chiral expression in biopolymers but also inspires the design of chiroptical and bioinspired materials.

Noncovalently bound and mechanically interlocked systems using pillar[n]arenes

Pillar[n]arenes are pillar-shaped macrocyclic compounds owing to the methylene bridges linking the para-positions of the units. Owing to their unique pillar-shaped structures, these compounds exhibit various excellent properties compared with other cyclic host molecules, such as versatile functionality using various organic synthesis techniques, substituent-dependent solubility, cavity-size-dependent host-guest properties in organic media, and unit rotation along with planar chiral inversion. These advantages have enabled the high-yield synthesis and rational design of pillar[n]arene-based mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs). In particular, new types of pillar[n]arene-based MIMs that can dynamically convert between interlocked and unlocked states through unit rotation have been produced. The highly symmetrical pillar-shaped structures of pillar[n]arenes result in simple NMR spectra, which are useful for studying the motion of pillar[n]arene wheels in MIMs and creating sophisticated MIMs with higher-order structures. The creation and application of polymeric MIMs based on pillar[n]arenes is also discussed.

Macrocycle-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, generated by connecting monomers through noncovalent interactions, have received considerable attention over the past years, as they provide versatile platforms for developing diverse aesthetically pleasing polymeric structures with promising applications in a variety of fields, such as medicine, catalysis, and sensing. In the development of supramolecular polymers, macrocyclic hosts play a very important role. Benefiting from their abundant host-guest chemistry and self-assembly characteristics, macrocycles themselves or their host-guest complexes can self-assemble to form well-ordered supramolecular polymeric architectures including pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes. The integration of these topological structures into supramolecular polymeric materials also imbues them with some unforeseen functions. Current interest in macrocycle-based supramolecular polymers is mostly focused on the development of supramolecular soft materials in solution or gel-state, in which the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions endows supramolecular polymers with a wealth of "smart" properties, such as multiresponsiveness and self-repair capabilities. While preparation of macrocycle-derived supramolecular polymers in the solid state is a relatively challenging but intriguing prospect, they are an important part of the field of supramolecular polymers. On one hand, the construction of macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers enables us to obtain new materials with novel properties and functions such as mechano-responsiveness. On the other hand, the molecular structures and arrangements in these materials are well-identified by X-ray crystallography techniques, offering a direct visual representation of the supramolecular polymerization process. The analysis of the role of noncovalent interactions in these architectures allows us to design more sophisticated and elegant supramolecular polymers in a highly rationalized and controllable manner. This Account serves to summarize the research progress on macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers (MSSPs), including the contributions toward this field made by our group. For constructing MSSPs, the key point is to control noncovalent interactions. Thus, in this Account, we primarily classify these MSSPs by different noncovalent interactions involved to connect the monomers, including metal-ligand interactions, host-guest interactions, π···π stacking, and halogen bonding. These noncovalent interactions are highly associated with the structures and functions of the resultant MSSPs. For instance, using metal-ligand interactions as driving forces, metal clusters can be introduced in MSSPs which afford systems with solid-state luminescence or proton conduction properties; supramolecular polymerization using macrocycle-based host-guest interactions can modulate the molecular arrangement of some specific molecules in the solid state, which further influences their solid-state properties; π···π stacking interactions and halogen bonding give chemists more choice to design MSSPs with various elements. The role of macrocyclic hosts in MSSPs is also revealed in these descriptions. Finally, the remaining challenges are identified for further development of future prospects. We hope that this Account can inspire new discoveries in the realm of supramolecular functional systems and offer new opportunities for the construction of supramolecular architectures and solid-state materials.

GOx-assisted synthesis of pillar[5]arene based supramolecular polymeric nanoparticles for targeted/synergistic chemo-chemodynamic cancer therapy

Background

Cancer is the most serious world's health problems on the global level and various strategies have been developed for cancer therapy. Pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular therapeutic nano-platform (SP/GOx NPs) was constructed successfully via orthogonal dynamic covalent bonds and intermolecular H-bonds with the assistance of glucose oxidase (GOx) and exhibited efficient targeted/synergistic chemo-chemodynamic cancer therapy.

Methods

The morphology of SP/GOx NPs was characterized by DLS, TEM, SEM and EDS mapping. The cancer therapy efficinecy was investigated both in vivo and in vitro.

Results

SP/GOx NPs can load drug molecules (Dox) and modify target molecule (FA-Py) on its surface conveniently. When the resultant FA-Py/SP/GOx/Dox NPs enters blood circulation, FA-Py will target it to cancer cells efficiently, where GOx can catalyst the overexpressed glucose to generate H₂O₂. Subsequently, the generated H₂O₂ in cancer cells catalyzed by ferrocene unit to form •OH, which can kill cancer cells. Furthermore, the loaded Dox molecules released under acid microenvironment, which can further achieve chemo-therapy.

Conclusion

All the experiments showed that the excellent antitumor performance of FA-Py/SP/GOx/Dox NPs, which provided an new method for pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymer for biomedical applications.

A Review on Synthesis Methods of Phyllosilicate- and Graphene-Filled Composite Hydrogels

This review discusses, in brief, the various synthetic methods of two widely-used nanofillers; phyllosilicate and graphene. Both are 2D fillers introduced into hydrogel matrices to achieve mechanical robustness and water uptake behavior. Both the fillers are inserted by physical and chemical gelation methods where most of the chemical gelation, i.e., covalent approaches, results in better physical properties compared to their physical gels. Physical gels occur due to supramolecular assembly, van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic associations, and H-bonding. For chemical gelation, in situ radical triggered gelation mostly occurs.

Molecular Recognition by Pillar[5]arenes: Evidence for Simultaneous Electrostatic and Hydrophobic Interactions

The formation of inclusion complexes between alkylsulfonate guests and a cationic pillar[5]arene receptor in water was investigated by NMR and ITC techniques. The results show the formation of host-guest complexes stabilized by electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic effects with binding constants of up to 10⁷ M⁻¹ for the guest with higher hydrophobic character. Structurally, the alkyl chain of the guest is included in the hydrophobic aromatic cavity of the macrocycle while the sulfonate groups are held in the multicationic portal by ionic interactions.

Crown Ether-Based Supramolecular Polymers: From Synthesis to Self-Assembly

Supramolecular polymers not only possess many advantages of traditional polymers, but also have many unique characteristics. Supramolecular polymers can be constructed by self-assembly of various noncovalent interactions. Host-guest interaction, as one important type of noncovalent interactions, has been widely applied to construct supramolecular polymers. From the perspective of classification of the recognition system motifs, host-guest recognition motifs mainly include crown ether, cyclodextrin, calixarene, cucurbituril, and pillararene-based host-guest recognition pairs. Crown ethers, as the first-generation macrocyclic hosts, have played a very important part in the development of supramolecular chemistry. Due to the easy modification of crown ethers, various crown ether derivatives have been prepared by attaching some functional groups to the edges of crown ethers, which endowed them with some interesting properties and made them ideal candidates for the fabrication of supramolecular polymers. This review gives a review of the preparation of crown ether-based supramolecular polymers (CSPs) and summarizes crown ether-based recognition pairs, organization methods, topological structures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functional characteristics.

Light-controlled interconversion between a [c2]daisy chain and a lasso-type pseudo[1]rotaxane

A pillar[5]arene-based covalent organic framework with pre-encoded selective host-guest recognition

It is highly desirable to maintain both permanent accessible pores and selective molecular recognition capability of macrocyclic cavitands in the solid state. Integration of well-defined discrete macrocyclic hosts into ordered porous polymeric frameworks (e.g., covalent organic frameworks, COFs) represents a promising strategy to transform many supramolecular chemistry concepts and principles well established in the solution phase into the solid state, which can enable a broad range of practical applications, such as high-efficiency molecular separation, heterogeneous catalysis, and pollution remediation. However, it is still a challenging task to construct macrocycle-embedded COFs. In this work, a novel pillar[5]arene-derived (P5) hetero-porous COF, denoted as P5-COF, was rationally designed and synthesized. Featuring the unique backbone structure, P5-COF exhibited selective adsorption of C2H2 over C2H4 and C2H6, as well as significantly enhanced host-guest binding interaction with paraquat, in comparison with the pillar[5]arene-free COF analog, Model-COF. The present work established a new strategy for developing COFs with customizable molecular recognition/separation properties through the bottom-up "pre-porous macrocycle to porous framework" design.

Tetraphenylethene-Embedded Pillar[5]arene and [15]Paracyclophane: Distorted Cavities and Host-Guest Binding Properties

Two aggregation-induced emission (AIE) macrocycles (DMP[5]-TPE and PCP[5]-TPE) were prepared by embedding Tetraphenylethene (TPE) unit into the skeletons of Dimethoxypillar[5]arene (DMP[5]) and [15]Paracyclophane ([15]PCP) at meso position, respectively. In crystal, the PCP[5]-TPE showed a distorted cavity, and the incubation of hexane inside the DMP[5]-TPE cavity caused a distinct change in the molecular conformation compared to PCP[5]-TPE. There was no complexation between PCP[5]-TPE and 1,4-dicyanobutane (DCB). UV absorption experiments showed the distorted cavity of DMP[5]-TPE hindered association with DCB.
