From Virtual to Physical: Integration of Chemical Logic Gates

A Tutorial Review on the Fluorescent Probes as a Molecular Logic Circuit-Digital Comparator

The rapid progress in the field of fluorescent probes and fluorescent sensing material extended this research area toward more complex molecular logic gates capable of carrying out a variety of sensing functions simultaneously. These molecules are able to calculate a composite result in which the analysis is not performed by a man but by the molecular device itself. Since the first report by de Silva of AND molecular logic gate, all possible logic gates have been achieved at the molecular level, and currently, utilization of more complicated molecular logic circuits is a major task in this field. Comparison between two digits is the simplest logic operation, which could be realized with the simplest logic circuit. That is why the right understanding of the applied principles during the implementation of molecular digital comparators could play a critical role in obtaining logic circuits that are more complicated. Herein, all possible ways for the construction of comparators on the molecular level were discussed, and recent achievements connected with these devices were presented.

New Water-Soluble Poly(propylene imine) Dendrimer Modified with 4-Sulfo-1,8-naphthalimide Units: Sensing Properties and Logic Gates Mimicking

A new water-soluble poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPI) modified with 4-sulfo-1,8-naphthalimid units (SNID) and its related structure monomer analog (SNIM) has been prepared by a simple synthesis. The aqueous solution of the monomer exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) at 395 nm, while the dendrimer emitted at 470 nm due to an excimer formation beside the AIE at 395 nm. Fluorescence emission of the aqueous solution of either SNIM or SNID was significantly affected by traces of different miscible organic solvents, and the limits of detection were found to be less than 0.05% (v/v). Moreover, SNID exhibited the function to execute molecular size-based logic gates where it mimics XNOR and INHIBIT logic gates using water and ethanol as inputs and the AIE/excimer emissions as outputs. Hence, the concomitant execution of both XNOR and INHIBIT enables SNID to mimic digital comparators.

Light-responsive nanochannels based on the supramolecular host–guest system

The light-responsive nanochannel of rhodopsin gained wider research interest from its crucial roles in light-induced biological functions, such as visual signal transduction and energy conversion, though its poor stability and susceptibility to inactivation in vitro have limited its exploration. However, the fabrication of artificial nanochannels with the properties of physical stability, controllable structure, and easy functional modification becomes a biomimetic system to study the stimulus-responsive gating properties. Typically, light-responsive molecules of azobenzene (Azo), retinal, and spiropyran were introduced into nanochannels as photo-switches, which can change the inner surface wettability of nanochannels under the influence of light; this ultimately results in the photoresponsive nature of biomimetic nanochannels. Furthermore, the fine-tuning of their stimulus-responsive properties can be achieved through the introduction of host–guest systems generally combined with a non-covalent bond, and the assembling process is reversible. These host–guest systems have been introduced into the nanochannels to form different functions. Based on the host–guest system of light-responsive reversible interaction, it can not only change the internal surface properties of the nanochannel and control the recognition and transmission behaviors but also realize the controlled release of a specific host or guest molecules in the nanochannel. At present, macrocyclic host molecules have been introduced into nanochannels including pillararenes, cyclodextrin (CD), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). They are introduced into the nanochannel through chemical modification or host–guest assemble methods. Based on the changes in the light-responsive structure of azobenzene, spiropyran, retinal, and others with macrocycle host molecules, the surface charge and hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the nanochannel were changed to regulate the ionic and molecular transport. In this study, the development of photoresponsive host and guest-assembled nanochannel systems from design to application is reviewed, and the research prospects and problems of this photo-responsive nanochannel membrane are presented.

Small-scale soft grippers with environmentally responsive logic gates

Small-scale soft grippers are adaptive and deformable, and can be utilized for confined environments (e.g., the human body). Small-scale soft grippers require logic-based computation to achieve intelligent control and perform logical analysis of the surrounding information. However, it is a great challenge to integrate electronic chips and power supplies (i.e., batteries) on their small systems. Here, the approach provides a route to add computational capabilities via environmentally responsive logic gates in small-scale soft grippers, without electronics, external control, or tethering. Various origami-inspired grippers performing YES, NOT, XOR, AND, OR, NOR and NAND gates, respectively, were developed by stimuli-responsive hydrogels as building blocks. Although the hydrogels respond to different kinds of stimuli, their outputs are the same: a change in hydrogel size, leading to the bending of the arms of the grippers. Hence, the logic gates can be integrated easily within a gripper (e.g., connecting an AND gate to another AND gate). Moreover, the gripper fabricated by dual-responsive hydrogels can intelligently and autonomously switch from an AND gate to an OR gate upon varied environmental stimuli. In addition, a magnetic gripper with an AND gate was fabricated that can analyse different stimuli, and capture and release the targeted object via the environmentally responsive logic gates. This strategy provides a new route to incorporate on-board perception, control and computation via environmentally responsive logic gates in small-scale soft robots and machines.

Dual-Site Fluorescent Sensor as a Multiple Logic System for Studying the Dichotomous Function of Sulfur Dioxide under Oxidative Stress Induced by Peroxynitrite

Intracellular reactive oxygen species and reactive sulfur play a vital role in regulating redox homeostasis and maintaining cell functions. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) has emerged as an important gas signal molecule recently, which is not only a potential reducing agent but also a potential inductor of oxidative stress in organisms. Due to high reactivity, peroxynitrite (ONOO^-) could act on many biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, and cause irreversible damage, eventually leading to cell apoptosis or necrosis. In order to further illuminate the dichotomous role of SO₂ under oxidative stress induced by ONOO^-, we designed the first dual-site fluorescent sensor (NIR-GYf) for separate or continuous detection of SO₂ and ONOO^-. NIR-GYf was successfully used for cell imaging of endogenous SO₂ and ONOO^-. In addition, western blotting analysis was used to verify the oxidation and antioxidation of SO₂ and its dichotomous biological influence. Finally, NIR-GYf was integrated with multiple Boolean logic operations to construct an advanced analysis device, thereby realizing the direct analysis of SO₂ and ONOO^- levels.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles for Multimode Colorimetric Sensing of Multiplex Metal Ions and Molecular Informatization Applications

Plasmonic materials have been widely used in chemo/biosensing and biomedicine. However, little attention has been paid to the application of plasmonic materials in terms of the transition from molecular sensing to molecular informatization. Herein, we demonstrated that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) prepared through facile and rapid microwave heating have multimode colorimetric sensing capabilities to different metal ions (Cr³⁺, Hg²⁺, and Ni²⁺), which can be further transformed into interesting and powerful molecular information technology (massively parallel molecular logic computing and molecular information protection). The prepared AgNPs can quantitatively and sensitively detect Cr³⁺ and Hg²⁺ in actual water samples. The AgNPs' multimode-guided multianalyte sensing processing was further investigated to construct a series of basic logic gates and advanced cascaded logic circuits by considering the analytes as the inputs and the colorimetric signals (like color, absorbance, wavelength shift) as the outputs. Moreover, the selective responses and molecular logic computing ability of AgNPs were also utilized to develop molecular cryptosteganography for encrypting and hiding some specific information, which proves that the molecular world and the information world are interconnected and use each other. This research not only opens the door for the transition from molecular sensing to molecular informatization but also provides an excellent opportunity for the construction of the "metaverse" of the molecular world.

Light and Cation-Driven Optical Switch based on a Stilbene-Appended Terpyridine System for the Design of Molecular-Scale Logic Devices

A molecular system comprising a terpyridine moiety capable of coordinating with different cations and a photoswitchable stilbene unit has been utilized here for the fabrication of multiply configurable logic systems. Incorporation of a substituted stilbene unit into the terpyridine motif generates an intraligand charge-transfer-sensitive module whose absorption and emission spectral properties are highly sensitive to light as well as cations. On the basis of the optical response profile of the receptor in the presence of selected cations as well as light of a specific wavelength, we are able to demonstrate multiple Boolean logic functions such as INHIBIT, IMPLICATION, OR, NOR, and NAND, as well as various combinations of them. Of particular interest, we utilized the present system for the construction of security keypad locks and memory devices by maintaining a proper sequence of the stimuli and monitoring either absorption or emission spectral response at a specific wavelength as the output signal. In addition to various Boolean logic functions, the present system has also the ability to mimic fuzzy logic operations for generating an infinite-valued logic scheme depending on its emission spectral responses upon varying the concentration of cationic (Fe²⁺ and/or Zn²⁺) and anionic (CN^-) inputs.

Low-cost photo-switches based on stilbene-appended Zn(II)-terpyridine complexes

We report herein the synthesis, characterization, photophysics, and photo-isomerization behaviors of three Zn(II)-terpyridine complexes of the type [Zn(tpy-pvp-X)₂]²⁺ (X = H, Me, and NO₂) covalently tethered with stilbene moiety. The complexes exhibit absorption bands stretching up to the edge of the visible domain due to ligand → ligand charge transfer (LLCT) transitions and strong emission at room temperature in the visible due to radiative deactivation of ³LLCT state having lifetime within 1.0-3.0 ns. The stilbene motifs in the complexes undergo trans to cis isomerization upon irradiating with UV and visible light accompanied by significant alteration of their absorption, emission, and ¹H NMR spectral profiles. Apart from the variation of electron donating and electron withdrawing substituent (X), the isomerization studies were also carried out in three different solvents (DCM, MeCN, and DMSO) to further tune their kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The rate, rate constant and quantum yield of isomerization were estimated in all the solvents. The reverse process (cis to trans) also occurs very slowly on keeping but could be accelerated upon heating. Trans to cis photoisomerization leads to quenching of emission in case of 1 and 2, whereas backward thermal cis to trans conversion leads to restoration of emission. By contrast, for the nitro-derivative (3) forward process induces emission enhancement, while backward process gives rise to emission quenching. In essence, "on-off" and "off-on" emission switching is feasible for 1 and 2, whereas "off-on" and "on-off" emission switching occurs in case of 3. Emission spectral responses upon successive action of photonic and thermal input lead to the fabrication of INHIBIT and IMPLICATION logic gates. DFT and TD-DFT computational investigations were also undertaken to visualize their electronic structures, correct assignment of the spectral bands, and mode of isomerization process.

Stimuli-Responsive Molecular Switches and Logic Devices Based on Ru(II)-Terpyridyl-Imidazole Coordination Motif

We report herein the synthesis, photophysics, and electrochemistry of three Ru(II)-terpyridine complexes derived from a new terpyridyl-imidazole ligand (tpy-HImzPh₃F₂) and study their pH- and temperature-responsive behaviors toward the fabrication of molecular switches. The complexes emitted at room temperature (RT) have a lifetime within the 4.5-49.0 ns domain, depending on the auxiliary ligand and the solvent used. In the acidic region, the complexes exhibit emission, indicating the "on-state", while in the basic condition, the emission is totally quenched, indicating the "off-state". Similarly, when the temperature is lowered, the emission intensity and lifetime are enhanced, demonstrating the on-state, while increase of temperature leads to quenching of the emission intensity and lifetime, designated as the off-state. In both cases, the process is reversible. The bathochromic shift of the spectral band together with the emission quenching and lowering of the Ru³⁺/Ru²⁺ potential is also observed upon deprotonation at elevated pH. In addition, systematic variation of the absorption spectral behaviors upon variation of pH helps in evaluation of the pK_a's of the complexes. In essence, the complexes can act as switches emanated from a huge change in their absorption, emission, and redox behaviors as a function of their acidity/basicity (pH) and temperature. Moreover, their emission spectral responses as a function of pH and temperature were utilized for the fabrication of two-input binary logic gates. Density-functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) computations are performed for appropriate interpretation of the spectral bands.

Infochemistry and the Future of Chemical Information Processing

Nowadays, information processing is based on semiconductor (e.g., silicon) devices. Unfortunately, the performance of such devices has natural limitations owing to the physics of semiconductors. Therefore, the problem of finding new strategies for storing and processing an ever-increasing amount of diverse data is very urgent. To solve this problem, scientists have found inspiration in nature, because living organisms have developed uniquely productive and efficient mechanisms for processing and storing information. We address several biological aspects of information and artificial models mimicking corresponding bioprocesses. For instance, we review the formation of synchronization patterns and the emergence of order out of chaos in model chemical systems. We also consider molecular logic and ion fluxes as information carriers. Finally, we consider recent progress in infochemistry, a new direction at the interface of chemistry, biology, and computer science, considering unconventional methods of information processing.

Emission Switching in the Near-Infrared by Reversible Trans-Cis Photoisomerization of Styrylbenzene-Conjugated Osmium Terpyridine Complexes

A new array of homoleptic osmium(II) complexes based on styrylbenzene-conjugated terpyridine ligands (tpy-pvp-X) were synthesized and their photophysical, electrochemical, and photoisomerization behaviors thoroughly investigated in this work. Both electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents were incorporated onto a tpy-pvp-X (X = H, Me, Cl, NO₂, and Ph) moiety to tune the optical properties and also the rate of photoisomerization behaviors in the complexes. All complexes display strong spin-allowed singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer bands in the visible (495-506 nm) and weak singlet ground state to triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (³MLCT) broad bands within the 600-700 nm range. The complexes also exhibit strong phosphorescence emission from their ³MLCT state in the near-infrared domain (737-752 nm) at room temperature with excited-state lifetimes spanning between 107 and 165 ns. Two styrylbenzene units promote reversible trans-trans to trans-cis/cis-cis isomerization induced by light. The rate constants and quantum yields of photoisomerization were found to vary linearly with the Hammett σ_p parameters of the substituents. The rate and quantum yields were also found to decrease with increasing polarity of the solvents. Considerable modulation of the optical behavior along with luminescence switching in the complexes has been achieved upon photoisomerization. Moreover, the optical outputs as a function of two photonic stimuli inputs were used to demonstrate the binary function of a two-input IMPLICATION logic gate. In conjunction with the experimental study, computational investigations were also carried out in all three conformations of the complexes (trans-trans, trans-cis, and cis-cis) to have a perception of their electronic structures and for correct assignment of their absorption and emission spectral bands.

The non-adiabatic exciton transfer in tetrathiafulvalene chains: a theoretical study of signal transmission in a molecular logic system

Using an exciton as a carrier was examined as a possible solution to the problem of signal transmission between molecular logic gates. A tetrathiafulvalene chain was chosen as a model for a molecular logic system and its distinct logic states were described as excitons located at certain tetrathiafulvalene units. The parameters of the exciton transfer between the units of the chain were studied. The transfer rate between the two adjacent units was calculated using the Plotnikov-Bixon-Jortner theory basing on molecular parameters calculated using TD-DFT. The order of electronic states was studied at the MCQDPT and TD-DFT levels of theory. It was found that certain functional groups in the chain can make exciton transfer faster than its recombination. The exciton can effectively carry a signal through the chain, which in turn can be enlarged and modified.

Four-in-One: Advanced Copper Nanocomposites for Multianalyte Assays and Multicoding Logic Gates

The usage of non-noble-metal nanomaterials for nanoprobes or functional modules is still a big challenge because of their poor stability, functionality, and surface plasmon resonance property. In this work, copper ion, mercaptosuccinic acid, and nanocrystalline cellulose are combined for facile one-step synthesis and self-assembly of ultrasmall copper nanoparticles to produce supercolloidal particles (NCC@MSA-Cu SPs). Cu SPs show advanced multifunctionality for fast point-of-care tests (POCTs) of four metal ions (Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Ag⁺, and Zr⁴⁺). These selective recognitions integrate four different chemical reaction mechanisms (ion etching, core-shell deposition, templated synthesis, and precipitation) to produce four distinct readout signals. The multisignal mode-guided multianalyte sensing strategy can effectively avoid interference that affects single signal mode-based sensing. Benefiting from the creative multi-input and multireadout abilities, the visual multicoding logic gates of OR, NOR, AND, and INHIBIT are built based on optical responses of Cu SPs.

Stimuli-Responsive Near-Infrared Emissive Os(II)-Terpyridine Complexes with a Sense of Logic

Two bis-tridentate Os(II) compounds based on a heteroditopic terpyridine-bipyridine-type ligand were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were thoroughly studied. The compounds exhibit strong spin-allowed ¹MLCT bands in the visible domain (489-521 nm) as well as weak ¹GS to ³MLCT bands within the 668-815 nm domain. The compounds display strong luminescence from the ³MLCT state in the near-infrared domain (728-780 nm) at room temperature having lifetimes in the range of 20.0-171.0 ns. After coordination of [Os(tpy-PhCH₃/H₂pbbzim)₂]²⁺ unit to the terpyridine site of tpy-Hbzim-dipy, the complexes offer vacant pyridine-imidazole motifs for interacting with cationic and anionic guests. Consequently, photophysical properties of the compounds were tuned to a great extent upon interaction with selected cations, anions, pH, as well as protons. Anion-induced alteration of the ground- and excited-state properties of the compound lead to recognition of specific anions in solution. Significant change in the optical spectral behaviors as well as switching of emission spectral properties of the compounds was done in the NIR region upon treating with anions, cations, protons, and solvents (dichloromethane, acetonitrile, methanol, dimethylsulfoxide, and water). Moreover, the optical outputs in response to external stimuli were used to demonstrate binary functions of two-input IMPLICATION, NOR, and XNOR logic gates.

Dual-Analyte Chronopotentiometric Aptasensing Platform Based on a G-Quadruplex/Hemin DNAzyme and Logic Gate Operations

Conventional potentiometric ion sensors that rely on a specific ion carrier in a polymeric membrane can hardly achieve multianalyte detection. Inspired by the remarkable ability of built-in logic gate sensors for multianalyte detection, herein we report a potentiometric aptasensing platform based on a G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme and logic gate operations for determination of two analytes using a single membrane electrode. A bifunctional probe with two aptamer units and a signal reporter oligonucleotide with a DNAzyme sequence are assembled on the magnetic beads to form a DNA hybrid structure. The "OR" and "INHIBIT" logic functions can be performed by using the two aptamers and their targets as inputs, and using the chronopotentiometric response based on the G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme-H₂O₂-mediated oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine as output. Kanamycin and oxytetracycline, as commonly used antibiotics, have been employed as the models and successfully measured.

Stimuli-Responsive Luminescent Bis-Tridentate Ru(II) Complexes toward the Design of Functional Materials

We report here the synthesis, characterization, and photophysics of two bis-tridentate Ru(II) complexes based on a heteroditopic ligand and thoroughly studied their stimuli-responsive behaviors toward the design of functional materials. Both complexes display emission at room temperature having lifetimes in the range of 0.5-70.0 ns, depending on coligand and solvent. Substantial modulations of absorption and emission spectral behaviors of the complexes were done upon interaction with anions, and anion-induced changes in the properties lead to recognition of selected anions in both organic and aqueous media. Photophysical properties of the complexes were also tuned by changing the pH of the medium, and p K_a values in both ground and excited states were determined. The presence of free pyridine-imidazole motifs in the complexes leads to substantial modulation of the optical properties and switching of the emission properties upon interaction with selected cations as well as with protons. Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cu²⁺ trigger emission quenching, while Zn²⁺ induces finite enhancement of the emission intensity in the complexes. In essence, modulation of the optical properties and switching of luminescence properties of the complexes were accomplished by a variety of the external stimuli such as anions, cations, protons, and pH, as well as solvent polarity. Importantly, the optical outputs in response to an appropriate set of stimuli were utilized to mimic the functions of two-input IMPLICATION, NOR, and XNOR logic gates.

Hybrid Mesoporous Nanocarriers Act by Processing Logic Tasks: Toward the Design of Nanobots Capable of Reading Information from the Environment

Here, we present the design of smart nanodevices capable of reading molecular information from the environment and acting accordingly by processing Boolean logic tasks. As proof of concept, we prepared Au-mesoporous silica (MS) nanoparticles functionalized with the enzyme glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on the Au surface and with supramolecular nanovalves as caps on the MS surface, which is loaded with a cargo (dye or drug). The nanodevice acts as an AND logic gate and reads information from the solution (presence of glucose and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺)), which results in cargo release. We show the possibility of coimmobilizing GDH and the enzyme urease on nanoparticles to mimic an INHIBIT logic gate, in which the AND gate is switched off by the presence of urea. We also show that such nanodevices can deliver cytotoxic drugs in cancer cells by recognizing intracellular NAD⁺ and the presence of glucose.

Molecular logic gates: the past, present and future

The field of molecular logic gates originated 25 years ago, when A. P. de Silva published a seminal article in Nature. Stimulated by this ground breaking research, scientists were inspired to join the race to simulate the workings of the fundamental components of integrated circuits using molecules. The rules of this game of mimicry were flexible, and have evolved and morphed over the years. This tutorial review takes a look back on and provides an overview of the birth and growth of the field of molecular logics. Spinning-off from chemosensor research, molecular logic gates quickly proved themselves to be more than intellectual exercises and are now poised for many potential practical applications. The ultimate goal of this vein of research became clearer only recently - to "boldly go where no silicon-based logic gate has gone before" and seek out a new deeper understanding of life inside tissues and cells.

Multiple advanced logic gates made of DNA-Ag nanocluster and the application for intelligent detection of pathogenic bacterial genes

The integration of multiple DNA logic gates on a universal platform to implement advance logic functions is a critical challenge for DNA computing. Herein, a straightforward and powerful strategy in which a guanine-rich DNA sequence lighting up a silver nanocluster and fluorophore was developed to construct a library of logic gates on a simple DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) platform. This library included basic logic gates, YES, AND, OR, INHIBIT, and XOR, which were further integrated into complex logic circuits to implement diverse advanced arithmetic/non-arithmetic functions including half-adder, half-subtractor, multiplexer, and demultiplexer. Under UV irradiation, all the logic functions could be instantly visualized, confirming an excellent repeatability. The logic operations were entirely based on DNA hybridization in an enzyme-free and label-free condition, avoiding waste accumulation and reducing cost consumption. Interestingly, a DNA-AgNCs-based multiplexer was, for the first time, used as an intelligent biosensor to identify pathogenic genes, E. coli and S. aureus genes, with a high sensitivity. The investigation provides a prototype for the wireless integration of multiple devices on even the simplest single-strand DNA platform to perform diverse complex functions in a straightforward and cost-effective way.

Studies on a multifunctional chromo-fluorogenic sensor for dual channel recognition of Zn2+ and CN− ions in aqueous media: mimicking multiple molecular logic gates and memory devices

A new effectual naphthalene-based azomethine receptor has been systematically designed and synthesized as a selective colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for dual channel detection of cations and anions in aqueous environments.

Synthesis, fluorescence-sensing and molecular logic of two water-soluble 1,8-naphthalimides

Two novel highly water-soluble fluorescence sensing 1,8-naphthalimides are synthesized and investigated. The novel compounds are designed on the "fluorophore-receptor₁-spacer-receptor₂" model as a molecular fluorescence probe for determination of cations and anions in 100% aqueous media. The novel probes comprising N-imide and N-phenylpiperazine or morpholine substituents are capable to operate simultaneously via ICT and PET signaling mechanism as a function of pH and to recognize selectively Cu²⁺ and Hg²⁺ over the other representative metal ions. Due to the remarkable fluorescence changes in the presence of protons, hydroxyl anions, Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺, INH and doubly disabled INH logic gates are executed and the systems are able to act as a single output combinatorial logic circuit with four chemical inputs.

Performing Logical Operations with Stimuli-Responsive Building Blocks

Chemical logic gates can be fabricated by synthesizing molecules that have the ability to detect external stimuli (e.g., temperature or pH) and provide logical outputs. It is, however, challenging to fabricate a system that consists of many logic gates using this method: complex molecules can be difficult to synthesize and these logic gates typically cannot be integrated together. Here, we fabricated different types of logic gates by assembling a combination of different types of stimuli-responsive hydrogels that change their size under the influence of one type of stimulus. Importantly, the preparation of these stimuli-responsive hydrogels is widely reported and technically simple. Through designing the geometry of the systems, we fabricated the YES, NOT, OR, AND, NOR, and NAND gates. Although the hydrogels respond to different types of stimuli, their outputs are the same: a change in size of the hydrogel. Hence, we show that the logic gates can be integrated easily (e.g., by connecting an AND gate to an OR gate). In addition, we fabricated a standalone system with the size of a normal drug tablet (i.e., a "smart tablet") that can analyze (or diagnose) different stimuli and control the release of a chemical (or drug) via the logic gates.

Sensing behavior and logic operation of a colorimetric fluorescence sensor for Hg(2+)/Cu(2+) ions

A BODIPY-based 1 as a colorimetric fluorescence sensor was synthesized, and its metal sensing property was investigated. 1 displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg(2+) and Cu(2+) ions among 15 different metal cations. The addition of Hg(2+) and Cu(2+) ions into 1 in CH3CN resulted in a significant bathochromic shift of the UV absorption spectra from 533nm to 560nm and 593nm, respectively, changing the corresponding colors from pink to purple and blue. When excited at 530nm, the fluorescence intensity of 1 was quenched over 75% upon addition of Hg(2+) ions, while 1 with Cu(2+) ions exhibited significant fluorescence enhancement with a 23nm red-shift. Based on these results, three logic gates (OR, IMPLICATION, and INHIBIT) were obtained by controlling the chemical inputs.

Design of Multiple Logic Gates Based on Chemically Triggered Fluorescence Switching of Functionalized Polyethylenimine

In this study, two new functionalized polyethylenimine (PEI), PEIR and PEIQ, have been synthesized by covalently conjugating rhodamine 6G (R6G) or 8-chloroacetyl-aminoquinoline (CAAQ) and have been investigated for their sensing capabilities toward metal ions and anions basing on fluorescence on-off and off-on mechanisms. When triggered by protons, metal ions, or anions, functionalized PEIs can behave as a fluorescence switch, leading to a multiaddressable system. Inspired by these results, functionalized PEI-based logic systems capable of performing elementary logic operations (YES, NOT, NOR, and INHIBIT) and integrative logic operations (OR + INHIBIT) have been constructed by observing the change in the fluorescence with varying the chemical inputs such as protons, metal ions, and anions. Due to its characteristics, such as high sensitivity and fast response, developing functionalized PEI as a new material to perform logic operations may pave a new avenue to construct the next generation of molecular devices with better applicability for biomedical research.

Selective photosensitization through an AND logic response: optimization of the pH and glutathione response of activatable photosensitizers

A series of pH and GSH responsive photosensitizers were designed and synthesized. pKa values were optimized by adjusting the inductive contribution of substituents to reach a pH range (6.0-7.4) relevant to the tumour microenvironment. pH-Activatable behaviour and redox mediated release of the quencher from the PS by GSH allow the construction of an AND logic operator for selective photodynamic action in aqueous solutions.

A Cu²⁺-selective fluorescent chemosensor based on BODIPY with two pyridine ligands and logic gate

A novel near-infrared fluorescent chemosensor based on BODIPY (Py-1) has been synthesized and characterized. Py-1 displays high selectivity and sensitivity for sensing Cu(2+) over other metal ions in acetonitrile. Upon addition of Cu(2+) ions, the maximum absorption band of Py-1 in CH3CN displays a red shift from 603 to 608 nm, which results in a visual color change from pink to blue. When Py-1 is excited at 600 nm in the presence of Cu(2+), the fluorescent emission intensity of Py-1 at 617 nm is quenched over 86%. Notably, the complex of Py-1-Cu(2+) can be restored with the introduction of EDTA or S(2-). Consequently, an IMPLICATION logic gate at molecular level operating in fluorescence mode with Cu(2+) and S(2-) as chemical inputs can be constructed. Finally, based on the reversible and reproducible system, a nanoscale sequential memory unit displaying "Writing-Reading-Erasing-Reading" functions can be integrated.

Fast responding and selective near-IR Bodipy dye for hydrogen sulfide sensing

A Bodipy based, highly selective probe for hydrogen sulfide has been designed, synthesized and demonstrated to detect H2S in living cells. In this design, the reduction of two arylazido groups change the charge transfer characteristics of the 3,5-distyryl substituents on the Bodipy core, producing a 20 nm bathochromic spectral shift in the absorption band, and quenching of the emission by 85% compared to the original intensity, through photoinduced electron transfer.

A PEGylated colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent sensor based on BODIPY for Hg(ii) detection in water
