Abstract
This review surveys the synthesis and reactivity of low-oxidation state metalate anions of the d-block elements, with an emphasis on contributions reported between 2006 and 2022. Although the field has a long and rich history, the chemistry of transition metalate anions has been greatly enhanced in the last 15 years by the application of advanced concepts in complex synthesis and ligand design. In recent years, the potential of highly reactive metalate complexes in the fields of small molecule activation and homogeneous catalysis has become increasingly evident. Consequently, exciting applications in small molecule activation have been developed, including in catalytic transformations. This article intends to guide the reader through the fascinating world of low-valent transition metalates. The first part of the review describes the synthesis and reactivity of d-block metalates stabilized by an assortment of ligand frameworks, including carbonyls, isocyanides, alkenes and polyarenes, phosphines and phosphorus heterocycles, amides, and redox-active nitrogen-based ligands. Thereby, the reader will be familiarized with the impact of different ligand types on the physical and chemical properties of metalates. In addition, ion-pairing interactions and metal-metal bonding may have a dramatic influence on metalate structures and reactivities. The complex ramifications of these effects are examined in a separate section. The second part of the review is devoted to the reactivity of the metalates toward small inorganic molecules such as H2, N2, CO, CO2, P4 and related species. It is shown that the use of highly electron-rich and reactive metalates in small molecule activation translates into impressive catalytic properties in the hydrogenation of organic molecules and the reduction of N2, CO, and CO2. The results discussed in this review illustrate that the potential of transition metalate anions is increasingly being tapped for challenging catalytic processes with relevance to organic synthesis and energy conversion. Therefore, it is hoped that this review will serve as a useful resource to inspire further developments in this dynamic research field.

Abstract
Tryptamine-derived isocyanides are valuable building blocks in the construction of spirocyclic indolenines and indolines via dearomatization of the indole moiety. We report the Bu4N[Fe(CO)3NO]-catalyzed carbene transfer of α-diazo esters to 3-(2-isocyanoethyl)indoles, leading to ketenimine intermediates that undergo spontaneous dearomative spirocyclization. The utility of this iron-catalyzed carbene transfer/spirocyclization cascade was demonstrated by its use as a key step in the formal total synthesis of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (±)-aspidofractinine, (±)-limaspermidine, (±)-aspidospermidine, and (±)-17-demethoxy-N-acetylcylindrocarine.

Abstract
A highly efficient Rh(II) catalyzed non-radical protocol to access NH-free C-3 bifunctional oxindoles, which possess 3-allyl and 3-amino simultaneously, was first achieved by employing an intermolecular [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement reaction between diazooxindoles and tertiary allylic amines. Utilizing readily available allylamines as the nitrogen and allyl source concurrently, a wide range of bio-active 3-allyl-3-(amino)oxindoles were obtained in excellent yields under very mild reaction conditions; meanwhile, the TON can be up to 90 000. Our study addresses a gap in the literature by investigating intermolecular rearrangements of ammonium ylides with diazoamides, which have been relatively understudied.

Abstract
The three-component reactions of enaminones, α-diazo esters/ketones, and t-butyl nitrite (TBN) for the switchable synthesis of isomeric isoxazoles have been realized. The catalysis with Cu(II) salt provides 3,4-disubsituted isoxazoles via [3 + 2] cycloaddition. On the other hand, the catalysis of Ag(I) with identical substrates leads to isomeric isoxazoles with reversed C3 and C4 substitution based on a key [2 + 1] cycloaddition.

Abstract
An iron-catalysed carbene transfer reaction of diazo compounds to isocyanides has been developed. The resulting ketenimines are trapped in situ with various bisnucleophiles to access a range of densely functionalized heterocycles (pyrimidinones, dihydropyrazolones, 1H-tetrazoles) in a one-pot process. The electron-rich Hieber anion ([Fe(CO)3 NO]- ) facilitates efficient catalytic carbene transfer from acceptor-type α-diazo carbonyl compounds to isocyanides, providing a cost-efficient and benign alternative to similar noble metal-catalysed processes. Based on DFT calculations a plausible reaction mechanism for activation of the α-diazo carbonyl carbene precursor and ketenimine formation is provided.

Abstract
Glycine derivatives such as ethyl 2-(4-aminophenyl)-2-(phenylamino) acetate is an exciting and essential non-proteinogenic class of amino acids. Herein, we report an efficient and novel route to synthesize glycine derivatives using ethyl glyoxylate, aniline, and its derivatives catalyzed by bismuth salts. In our scheme, mild, non-toxic, and commercially viable reagents were utilized. The synthesized moieties were characterized by ESI-MASS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and XRD techniques. The target glycine derivatives were successfully obtained with a maximum yield of 87%. Moreover, the reaction is very green as water is the only byproduct.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel methodology to access N-aryl proline derivatives using amino-tethered α-diazoesters and cheap, readily available iron salts. Mechanistically, the aminocyclization reaction involves the initial formation of an iron-carbene complex followed by a nucleophilic attack of the aniline nitrogen atom to give an ammonium ylide intermediate, which finally undergoes the iron-promoted dealkylation.

Abstract
The first sequentially combined inorganic base promoted N-addition/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement reaction of α-alkylidene pyrazolinones and propargyl sulfonium salts has been reported to construct homoallyl sulfur-containing pyrazolones with moderate to excellent yields. α-Alkylidene pyrazolinones function as N-nucleophilic agents distinguished from the reported C-addition reactions. Propargyl sulfonium salts were first involved in the [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement protocol differentiated from the well-established annulation reactions. The excellent regioselectivity, the broad scope of substrates, gram-scale synthesis and convenient transformation embody the synthetic superiority of this cascade process.

Abstract
The nucleophilic iron complex Bu4 N[Fe(CO)3 (NO)] (TBA[Fe]) is an active catalyst in C-H-amination but also in proton-transfer catalysis. Herein, we describe the successful use of this complex as a proton-transfer catalyst in the cyclocondensation reaction between azides and ketones to the corresponding 1,2,3-triazoles. Cross-experiments indicate that the proton-transfer catalysis is significantly faster than the nitrene-transfer catalysis, which would lead to the C-H amination product. An example of a successful sequential Dimroth triazole-indoline synthesis to the corresponding triazole-substituted indolines is presented.

Abstract
N-O heterocycle compounds play an important role in various fields. Doyle et al. (Cheng et al., 2017) have recently reported an efficient catalyst-controlled selective cyclization reactions of tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBS)-protected enoldiazoacetamides with nitrosoarenes in which the multifunctionalized products 5-isoxazolones and 1,3-oxazin-4-ones were formed through [3+2]- and [5+1]-cyclizations using Rh2(oct)4 and Rh2(cap)4 as catalysts, respectively. The present work studied the mechanism of the reactions in question and the origins of the catalyst-dependent chemoselectivity by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-D3/SMD/6-311+G(d,p)//B3LYP-D3/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The computed results illustrate the importance of the different dirhodium catalysts to gain diversified N-O heterocycle compounds and suggest the specific interaction between the reactants by the real catalyst model. Meanwhile, it is the steric hindrance and electronic effect of the ligands of dirhodium catalysts that control the reaction mechanism. Furthermore, the other auxiliary theoretical analysis, natural bond orbital calculation and distortion/interaction analysis, make the electronic effects, and steric hindrance more distinct.

Abstract
Organosulfur compounds have long played a vital role in organic chemistry and in the development of novel chemical structures and architectures. Prominent among these organosulfur compounds are those involving a sulfur(IV) center, which have been the subject of countless investigations over more than a hundred years. In addition to a long list of textbook sulfur-based reactions, there has been a sustained interest in the chemistry of organosulfur(IV) compounds in recent years. Of particular interest within organosulfur chemistry is the ease with which the synthetic chemist can effect a wide range of transformations through either bond formation or bond cleavage at sulfur. This review aims to cover the developments of the past decade in the chemistry of organic sulfur(IV) molecules and provide insight into both the wide range of reactions which critically rely on this versatile element and the diverse scaffolds that can thereby be synthesized.

Abstract
The functionalization of C-H bonds with non-precious metal catalysts is an important research area for the development of efficient and sustainable processes. Herein, we describe the development of iron porphyrin catalyzed reactions of diazoacetonitrile with N-heterocycles yielding important precursors of tryptamines, along with experimental mechanistic studies and proof-of-concept studies of an enzymatic process with YfeX enzyme. By using readily available FeTPPCl, we achieved the highly efficient C-H functionalization of indole and indazole heterocycles. These transformations feature mild reaction conditions, excellent yields with broad functional group tolerance, can be conducted on gram scale, and thus provide a unique streamlined access to tryptamines.

Abstract
A Cu-catalyzed Sommelet-Hauser dearomatization of dihydrophenanthridine and diazo compounds is reported for the synthesis of spiro-indolines. A spiro-structure with adjacent quaternary and tertiary carbon centers was constructed in one step as a single isomer. Increasing steric hindrance by introducing ortho-substituents dramatically improved substrate reactivity in this transformation.

Abstract
Traditionally employed in the synthesis of small ring systems and rearrangement chemistry, sulfur-based ylides occupy a unique position in the toolbox of the synthetic organic chemist. In recent years a number of pioneering researchers have looked to expand the application of these unorthodox reagents through the use of transition metal catalysis. The strength and flexibility of such a combination have been shown to be of key importance in developing powerful novel methodologies. This chapter summarises recent developments in transition metal-catalysed sulfonium/sulfoxonium ylide reactions, as well as providing a historical perspective. In overviewing the successes in this area, the authors hope to encourage others into this growing field.

Abstract
Slow addition of sodium nitrite allows the in situ preparation of highly explosive diazo compounds and enables their safe and scalable application in iron catalyzed rearrangement reactions of allylic and propargylic sulfides. With catalyst loadings as low as 0.1 mol% an effective entry into α-mercapto-nitriles, α-mercapto-esters and α-trifluoromethyl-sulfides on a gram-scale is achieved.

Abstract
The first example of a biocatalytic [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement reaction involving allylic sulfides and diazo reagents (Doyle-Kirmse reaction) is reported. Engineered variants of sperm whale myoglobin catalyze this synthetically valuable C-C bond-forming transformation with high efficiency and product conversions across a variety of sulfide substrates (e.g., aryl-, benzyl-, and alkyl-substituted allylic sulfides) and α-diazo esters. Moreover, the scope of this myoglobin-mediated transformation could be extended to the conversion of propargylic sulfides to give substituted allenes. Active-site mutations proved effective in enhancing the catalytic efficiency of the hemoprotein in these reactions as well as modulating the enantioselectivity, resulting in the identification of the myoglobin variant Mb(L29S,H64V,V68F), which is capable of mediating asymmetric Doyle-Kirmse reactions with an enantiomeric excess up to 71 %. This work extends the toolbox of currently available biocatalytic strategies for the asymmetric formation of carbon-carbon bonds.

Abstract
Phosphine ligand stabilized air-stable Cu(I) complexes have been successfully used to functionalize the aromatic aminobenzoic acids in a chemoselective manner without implementing protection and deprotection strategy under mild reaction conditions. This chemoselective carbene insertion into -NH bond over -COOH and -OH bonds leads to the wide range of carboxy and hydroxy functionalized α-amino esters (27 examples). All of the isolated new products have been fully characterized using standard analytical methods.
