Abstract
The identity of a heteroatom within an aromatic ring influences the chemical properties of that heterocyclic compound. Systematically evaluating the effect of a single atom, however, poses synthetic challenges, primarily as a result of thermodynamic mismatches in atomic exchange processes. We present a photocatalytic strategy that swaps an oxygen atom of furan with a nitrogen group, directly converting the furan into a pyrrole analog in a single intermolecular reaction. High compatibility was observed with various furan derivatives and nitrogen nucleophiles commonly used in drug discovery, and the late-stage functionalization furnished otherwise difficult-to-access pyrroles from naturally occurring furans of high molecular complexity. Mechanistic analysis suggested that polarity inversion through single electron transfer initiates the redox-neutral atom exchange processes at room temperature.

Abstract
We report two practical and step-economical methodologies for the chemodivergent synthesis of tri-substituted pyrroles and 3-oxazolines from the domino reactions of 2H-azirines and acetone. For instance, acetone served as a nucleophile to react with 2H-azirines under the basic conditions to furnish pyrroles. Upon changing the catalyst to TfOH, acetone served as an electrophile to synthesize 3-oxazolines. Moreover, the products could be synthesized on a gram scale, and the possible catalytic cycles were proposed.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application of a new phosphine-free, well-defined, water-soluble, and air-stable Mn(II)-catalyst [Mn(L)(H2O)2Cl](Cl) ([1]Cl) featuring a 1,10-phenanthroline based tridentate pincer ligand, 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L), in dehydrogenative functionalization of alcohols to various N-heterocycles such as quinazolin-4(3H)-ones, quinolines, and quinoxalines are reported here. A wide array of multisubstituted quinazolin-4(3H)-ones were prepared in water under air following two pathways via the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with 2-aminobenzamides and 2-aminobenzonitriles, respectively. 2-Aminobenzyl alcohol and ketones bearing active methylene group were used as coupling partners for synthesizing quinoline derivatives, and various quinoxaline derivatives were prepared by coupling vicinal diols and 1,2-diamines. In all cases, the reaction proceeded smoothly using our Mn(II)-catalyst [1]Cl in water under air, affording the desired N-heterocycles in satisfactory yields starting from cheap and readily accessible precursors. Gram-scale synthesis of the compounds indicates the industrial relevance of our synthetic strategy. Control experiments were performed to understand and unveil the plausible reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Herein, we report a Zn(II)-catalyzed solvent-free sustainable synthesis of tri- and tetra-substituted pyridines using alcohols as the primary feedstock and NH4OAc as the nitrogen source. Using a well-defined air-stable Zn(II)-catalyst, 1a, featuring a redox-active tridentate azo-aromatic pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (La), a wide variety of unsymmetrical 2,4,6-substituted pyridines were prepared by three-component coupling of primary and secondary alcohols with NH4OAc. Catalyst 1a is equally compatible with the four-component coupling. Unsymmetrical 2,4,6-substituted pyridines were also prepared via a four-component coupling of a primary alcohol with two different secondary alcohols and NH4OAc. A series of tetra-substituted pyridines were prepared up to 67% yield by coupling primary and secondary alcohols with 1-phenylpropan-1-one or 1,2-diphenylethan-1-one and NH4OAc. The 1a-catalyzed reactions also proceeded efficiently upon replacing the secondary alcohols with the corresponding ketones, producing the desired tri- and tetra-substituted pyridines in higher yields in a shorter reaction time. A few control experiments were performed to unveil the mechanistic aspects, which indicates that the active participation of the aryl-azo ligand during catalysis enables the Zn(II)-complex to act as an efficient catalyst for the present multicomponent reactions. Aerial oxygen acts as an oxidant during the Zn(II)-catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols, producing H2O and H2O2 as byproducts.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to design new polysubstituted pyrrole derivatives as selective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors to target Alzheimer's disease. In this context, a highly efficient, one-pot, sequential, multi-component synthesis of a diverse range of polysubstituted pyrroles was developed through a sequential domino strategy by the condensation of amines with 1,1-bis(methylthio)-2-nitroethene (BMTNE), Knovenagle reaction of arylglyoxals with malono derivatives and subsequent Michael addition and intramolecular cyclization reaction in EtOH at reflux. Thirty-nine synthesized compounds were evaluated as AChE and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitors. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 4ad (IC50 = 2.95 ± 1.31 µM) was the most potent and selective AChE inhibitor with no significant inhibition against butyrylcholinesterase BChE. A kinetic study of 4ad revealed that this compound inhibited AChE in an uncompetitive mode. Based on a molecular modeling study, compound 4ad due to its small size properly fitted into the active site of AChE compared to BChE and stabilized by H-bond and hydrophobic interactions with the critical residues of the AChE binding pocket. Consequently, it was proposed that the 4ad derivative can be an ideal lead candidate against AD with a simple and practical operation of synthetic procedures.

Abstract
Syntheses of N-heterocyclic compounds that permit a flexible introduction of various substitution patterns by using inexpensive and diversely available starting materials are highly desirable. Easy to handle and reusable catalysts based on earth-abundant metals are especially attractive for these syntheses. We report here on the synthesis of 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles via the hydrogenation and cyclization of nitro ketones. The latter are easily accessible from three components: a ketone, an aldehyde and a nitroalkane. Our reaction has a broad scope and 23 of the 33 products synthesized are compounds which have not yet been reported. The key to the general hydrogenation/cyclization reaction is a highly active, selective and reusable nickel catalyst, which was identified from a library of 24 earth-abundant metal catalysts.

Abstract
Natural product-inspired compound collections serve as excellent sources for the identification of new bioactive compounds to treat disease. However, such compounds must necessarily be more structurally-enriched than traditional screening compounds, therefore inventive synthetic strategies and reliable methods are needed to prepare them. Amongst the various possible starting materials that could be considered for the synthesis of natural product-inspired compounds, ketones can be especially valuable due to the vast variety of complexity-building synthetic transformations that they can take part in, their high prevalence as commercial building blocks, and relative ease of synthesis. With a view towards developing a unified synthetic strategy for the preparation of next generation bioactive compound collections, this review considers whether ketones could serve as general precursors in this regard, and summarises the opulence of synthetic transformations available for the annulation of natural product ring-systems to ketone starting materials.

Abstract
Because of the widespread use of fossil fuels and the resulting global warming, development of sustainable catalytic transformations is now more important than ever to obtain our desired fuels and building materials with the least carbon footprint and waste production. Many sustainable (de)hydrogenation reactions, including CO2 reduction, H2 carrier systems, and others, have been reported using molecular pincer complexes. A specific subset of pincer complexes containing a central acridine donor with flanking CH2PR2 ligands, known as acridine-based PNP pincer complexes, exhibit special reactivities that are not imitable by other PNP pincer complexes such as pyridine-based or (R2PCH2CH2)2NH type ligands. The goal of this article is to highlight the unique reactivities of acridine-based complexes and then investigate how these reactivities allow these complexes to catalyse many sustainable reactions that traditional pincer complexes cannot catalyse. To that end, we will initially go over the synthesis and structural features of acridine complexes, such as the labile coordination of the central N donor and the observed fac-mer fluxionality. Following that, distinct reactivity patterns of acridine-based complexes including their reactivity with acids and water will be discussed. Finally, we will discuss the reaction systems that have been developed with acridine complexes thus far, including the notable selective transformations of primary alcohols to primary amines using ammonia, N-heteroaromatic synthesis from alcohols and ammonia, oxidation reactions with water with H2 liberation, development of H2 carrier systems, and others, and conclude the article with future possible directions. We hope that the systemic study presented here will aid researchers in developing further sustainable reactions based on the unique acridine-based pincer complexes.

Abstract
Herein, a new strategy for the direct synthesis of functionalized pyrroles from β-amino alcohols and ynones via ruthenium-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling has been demonstrated. This developed methodology proceeds in an atom- and step-economic fashion together with the merits of broad substrate scope, operational simplicity, and water and hydrogen gas as the sole by-products, which provides an alternative and sustainable way to access functionalized pyrroles. Further, this method was applied to the rapid synthesis of the COX-1/COX-2 inhibitor and boron dipyrromethene derivative successfully.

Abstract
N-Heterocycles, such as pyrroles, pyrimidines, quinazolines, and quinoxalines, are important building blocks for organic chemistry and the fine-chemical industry. For their synthesis, catalytic borrowing hydrogen and acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling reactions of alcohols as sustainable reagents have received significant attention in recent years. To overcome the problems of product separation and catalyst reusability, several metal-based heterogeneous catalysts have been reported to achieve these transformations with good yields and selectivity. In this Minireview, we summarize recent developments using both noble and non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts to synthesize N-heterocycles from alcohols and N-nucleophiles via acceptorless dehydrogenation or borrowing hydrogen methodologies. Abstract
AbstractA sustainable and time economic approach has been developed for the synthesis of polysubstituted pyrroles using copper iodide as a catalyst. The reaction proceeded through imine formation followed by cyclization with alkyne-Cu intermediate, which was supported by control experiments studies. The newly formed substituted pyrroles were obtained in excellent yields with high regioselectivity under mild conditions.

Abstract
A Ru-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative multicomponent reaction has been developed. This reaction offers a cost-effective and simple operational strategy to synthesize biologically active 1,8-dioxodecahydroacridine derivatives. The protocol provides a wide range of substrate scope and various functional groups are also well tolerated under the reaction condition. To shed light on the mechanistic and kinetic study, some controlled experiments and deuterium labeling experiments were executed. A time-dependent product distribution experiment is also presented and the reaction scale-up is performed to highlight the practical utility of this strategy.

Abstract
A base-free and acceptorless Ru-catalyzed dehydrogenative approach has been developed for the synthesis of N-heterocycles by using 1,3-dicarbonyls and amino alcohols through a domino sequential enamine formation and intramolecular oxidative cyclization strategy. This unified approach is also applicable for the synthesis of O-heterocycles involving 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol as a coupling reactant via consecutive C-alkylation and intramolecular cyclization steps. The present protocol is general for the synthesis of varieties of biologically important scaffolds, such as tetrahydro-4H-indol-4-one, 3,4-dihydroacridin-1(2H)-one, and tetrahydro-1H-xanthen-1-ones derivatives using a single catalytic system, viz. RuH2CO(PPh3)3. Environmentally benign H2O and H2 are the only byproducts in this domino process. Moreover, RuH2CO(PPh3)3-catalyzed C3-alkylation of tetrahydro-4H-indol-4-one using alcohol as a alkylating partner is also described in this report. For the first time, a solvent-free gram-scale reaction for the acceptorless dehydrogenative annulation has been demonstrated. A plausible mechanism for the Ru-catalyzed base-free and acceptorless dehydrogenative annulation of amino alcohols or 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohols has been provided with several experimental investigations and spectroscopic evidence.

Abstract
N-(Hetero)aryl-4,5-unsubstituted pyrroles were synthesized from (hetero)arylamines, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, and α-bromoacetaldehyde acetal by using aluminum(III) chloride as a Lewis acid catalyst through [1 + 2 + 2] annulation. This new versatile methodology provides a wide scope for the synthesis of different functional N-(hetero)aryl-4,5-unsubstituted pyrrole scaffolds, which can be further derived to access multisubstituted pyrrole-3-carboxamides. In the presence of 1.2 equiv of KI, a polysubstituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivative was also successfully synthesized.

Abstract
A bifunctional 3d-metal catalyst for the cascade synthesis of diverse pyrroles from nitroarenes is presented. The optimal catalytic system Co/NGr-C@SiO2 -L is obtained by pyrolysis of a cobalt-impregnated composite followed by subsequent selective leaching. In the presence of this material, (transfer) hydrogenation of easily available nitroarenes and subsequent Paal-Knorr/Clauson-Kass condensation provides >40 pyrroles in good to high yields using dihydrogen, formic acid, or a CO/H2 O mixture (WGSR conditions) as reductant. In addition to the favorable step economy, this straightforward domino process does not require any solvents or external co-catalysts. The general synthetic utility of this methodology was demonstrated on a variety of functionalized substrates including the preparation of biologically active and pharmaceutically relevant compounds, for example, (+)-Isamoltane.

Abstract
Selective linkage of renewable alcohols and ammonia into functional products would not only eliminate the prepreparation steps to generate active amino agents but also help in the conservation of our finite fossil carbon resources and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emission. Herein the development of a novel 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,8-naphthyridine-based iridium (III) complex is reported, which exhibits excellent catalytic performance toward a new hydrogen transfer-mediated annulation reaction of 2-nitrobenzylic alcohols with alcohols and ammonia. The catalytic transformation proceeds with the striking features of good substrate and functional group compatibility, high step and atom efficiency, no need for additional reductants, and liberation of H2O as the sole by-product, which endows a new platform for direct access to valuable quinazolines. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the non-coordinated N-atom in the ligand serves as a side arm to significantly promote the condensation process by hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
Covalent attachment of a 1,2,4-triazole iridium complex to mesoporous MCM-41 generated a heterogeneous catalyst that was found to be effective in the synthesis of 2-aryl isoindolines, quinolines, cyclic amines, and symmetrical secondary amines through a cascade borrowing hydrogen strategy. Interestingly, the supported heterogeneous iridium catalyst prepared from the 1,2,4-triazole iridium complex and mesoporous MCM-41 exhibited high catalytic activity in the preparation of 2-aryl isoindoline derivatives and symmetrical secondary amines. The catalyst system is highly recyclable for at least five times. Besides the important effect of the triazole, iridium sites grafted on siliceous supports can act as multifunctional catalytic centers and thus greatly enhance the catalytic activity of the catalysts. Furthermore, mechanistic experiments revealed that the reaction is initiated by an initial alcohol dehydrogenation and promoted by an iridium hydride intermediate. Importantly, the direct detection of a diagnostic iridium hydride signal confirmed that the synthesis of 2-aryl isoindolines occurs by a borrowing hydrogen process. This work provides an efficient example of isoindolines synthesis through a borrowing hydrogen strategy.

Abstract
An efficient and operationally simple protocol has been demonstrated for the synthesis of 1,3,5,7-tetrasubstituted pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidines via TBHP-mediated direct oxidative coupling of N-uracil amidines and methylarenes under metal-free conditions. Due to the inherent stability of methylarenes compared to aldehydes, the presented synthetic protocol is adaptable to a broad substrate scope, is operationally simple, has no need for stringent protection in the whole preparation process, and has the potential to prepare valuable products that are currently inaccessible or challenging to prepare using conventional methods. It is a significantly important complement to the conventional synthetic methods. The reaction possesses an efficient tandem oxidation-imination-cyclization process.
