Abstract
Arenes are 2D aromatics while dicarbadodecaborane clusters are branded as 3D aromatic molecules. In this work we prepare molecules that feature fused 2D/3D aromatic systems that represent boron-doped analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-carborane substituent enables swift arene borylation on boron bromide or hydride precursors to furnish five- and six-membered boracycles in conjugation with the arene. The mechanism was modeled by DFT computations implying a concerted transition state and analyzing the photophysical properties revealed high quantum yields in the six-membered systems.

Abstract
A Lewis superacidic bis(borane) C6F4{B(C6F5)2}2 was reacted with tungsten N2-complexes [W(N2)2(R2PCH2CH2PR2)2] (R = Ph or Et), affording zwitterionic boryldiazenido W(ii) complexes trans-[W(L)(R2PCH2CH2PR2)2(N2{B(C6F5)2(C6F4B(C6F5)3})] (L = ø, N2 or THF). These compounds feature only one N-B linkage of the covalent type, as a result of intramolecular boron-to-boron C6F5 transfer. Complex trans-[W(THF)(Et2PCH2CH2PEt2)2(N2{B(C6F5)2C6F4B(C6F5)3})] (5) was shown to split H2, leading to a seven-coordinate complex [W(H)2(Et2PCH2CH2PEt2)2(N2{B(C6F5)2}2C6F4)] (7). Interestingly, hydride storage at the metal triggers backward C6F5 transfer. This reverts the bis(boron) moiety to its bis(borane) state, now doubly binding the distal N, with structural parameters and DFT computations pointing to dative N→B bonding. By comparison with an N2 complex [W(H)2(Et2PCH2CH2PEt2)2(N2{B(C6F5)3}] (10) differing only in the Lewis acid (LA), namely B(C6F5)3, coordinated to the distal N, we demonstrate that two-fold LA coordination imparts strong N2 activation up to the diazene-diide (N22-) state. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a neutral LA coordination that induces reduction of N2.

Abstract
Phosphinoborenium cations stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were synthesized via the reaction of bromo(phosphino)boranes with NHCs. Their structures were investigated by heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory calculations. They possess a planar trigonal boron center directly bonded with the pyramidal phosphanyl group (PR2) and can be treated as cationic phosphinoboranes. The reactivity of the selected NHC-phosphinoborenium cation was tested toward AuCl·SMe2 and Ph2PCl. In both reactions, the titled compound acted as a phosphido group donor under heterolytic cleavage of the P-B bond. Control experiments with parent phosphinoborane emphasized differences between the reactivity of low-coordinate neutral and cationic species with P-B functionality.

Abstract
This report unveils an advancement in the formation of a Lewis superacid (LSA) and an organic superbase by the geometrical deformation of an organoboron species towards a T-shaped geometry. The boron dication [2]2+ supported by an amido diphosphine pincer ligand features both a large fluoride ion affinity (FIA>SbF5 ) and hydride ion affinity (HIA>B(C6 F5 )3 ), which qualifies it as both a hard and soft LSA. The unusual Lewis acidic properties of [2]2+ are further showcased by its ability to abstract hydride and fluoride from Et3 SiH and AgSbF6 respectively, and effectively catalyze the hydrodefluorination, defluorination/arylation, as well as reduction of carbonyl compounds. One and two-electron reduction of [2]2+ affords stable boron radical cation [2]⋅+ and borylene 2, respectively. The former species has an extremely high spin density of 0.798e at the boron atom, whereas the latter compound has been demonstrated to be a strong organic base (calcd. pKBH + (MeCN)=47.4) by both theoretical and experimental assessment. Overall, these results demonstrate the strong ability of geometric constraining to empower the central boron atom.

Abstract
Borinic acids [R2B(OH)] and their chelate derivatives are a subclass of organoborane compounds used in cross-coupling reactions, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, polymer or optoelectronics materials. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the synthesis of diarylborinic acids and their four-coordinated analogs. The main strategies to build up borinic acids rely either on the addition of organometallic reagents to boranes (B(OR)3, BX3, aminoborane, arylboronic esters) or the reaction of triarylboranes with a ligand (diol, amino alcohol, etc.). After general practical considerations of borinic acids, an overview of the main synthetic methods, their scope and limitations is provided. We also discuss some mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
Borenium ions, originally synthesized as fundamentally important laboratory curiosities, have attracted significant attention due to their applications in catalysis and frustrated Lewis pair chemistry. However, investigations of the materials properties of these types of compounds are exceptionally rare. Herein, we report the synthesis, molecular structures, and optical properties of a new class of air-stable borenium ions, stabilized by the strongly donating carbodicarbene (CDC) ligand (2, 3, 6). Notably, CDC-borafluorenium ions exhibit thermoluminescence in solution, a result of a twisted intramolecular charge transfer process. The temperature responsiveness, which is observable by the naked eye, is assessed over a 20 to -60 °C range. Significantly, compound 2 emits white light at lower temperatures. In the solid state, these borocations exhibit increased quantum yields due to aggregation-induced emission. CDC-borafluorenium ions with two different counteranions (Br-, BPh4-) were investigated to evaluate the effect of anion size on the solution and solid-state optical properties. In addition, CDCs containing both symmetrical and unsymmetrical N-heterocycles (bis(1-isopropyl-3-methylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene)methane and bis(1,3-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-ylidene)methane) were tested to understand the implications of free rotation about the CDC ligand carbon-carbon bonds. The experimental work is complemented by a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the excited-state dynamics.

Abstract
Spectacular progress has recently been achieved in transition metal-catalyzed C-H borylation of phosphines as well as directed electrophilic C-H borylation. As shown here, P-directed electrophilic borylation provides a new, straightforward, and efficient access to phosphine-boranes. It operates under metal-free conditions and leverages simple, readily available substrates. It is applicable to a broad range of backbones (naphthyl, biphenyl, N-phenylpyrrole, binaphthyl, benzyl, naphthylmethyl) and gives facile access to various substitution patterns at boron (by varying the boron electrophile or post-derivatizing the borane moiety). NMR monitoring supports the involvement of P-stabilized borenium cations as key intermediates. DFT calculations reveal the existence and stabilizing effect of π-arene/boron interactions in the (biphenyl)(i-Pr)2 P→BBr2 + species.

Abstract
Potent main‐group Lewis acids are capable of activating element‐hydrogen bonds. To probe the rivalry for hydride between silylium‐ and borenium‐ion centers, a neutral precursor with the hydrosilane and hydroborane units in close proximity on a naphthalene‐1,8‐diyl platform was designed. Abstraction of one hydride leads to a hydroborane‐stabilized silylium ion rather than a hydrosilane‐coordinated borenium ion paired with [B(C6F5)4]− or [HCB11Cl11]− as counteranions. Characterization by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction supported by DFT calculations reveals a cationic, unsymmetrical open three‐center, two‐electron (3c2e) Si−H−B linkage.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H borylation has been widely used in the preparation of organoboron compounds. Here, we developed a general protocol on metal-free P(III)-directed C-H borylation of phosphines mediated by BBr3 , resulting in the formation of products bearing both phosphorus and boron. The development of the metal-free strategy to mimic previous metallic processes has shown low cost, superior practicality, and environmental friendliness. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the preferred pathway for this metal-free directed C-H borylation process.

Abstract
An unexpected rearrangement occurred when an imidazolinium based OCO pincer-type ligand (1) reacted with PCl3 producing a chlorophosphine with a pendant oxazolium "arm" (3). The mechanism of this rearrangement was studied both experimentally and by density functional theory (DFT) computations. The deprotonation of 3 led to further unexpected results.

Abstract
Lewis acids are highly sought after for their applications in sensing, small-molecule activation, and catalysis. When combined with π-conjugated molecular frameworks, Lewis acids with unique optoelectronic properties can be realized. Here, we use a tridentate formazanate ligand to create a planar, redox-active, fluorescent, and strongly Lewis-acidic borenium cation. We also demonstrate that this compound can act as a colourimetric probe for reactivity.

Abstract
The synthesis of element-carbon double bonds is of great importance for the development and understanding of reactive π-bonded systems in chemistry. The seven-membered heterocyclic system 4 b is readily made by internal C-H activation at a pendent isopropyl methyl group of the respective [(IPr)C6 F5 BH]+ borenium ion. Subsequent deprotonation with the IMes carbene gives the neutral cyclic boraalkene system 5 b. The B=C double bond in compound 5 b adds carbon dioxide, CS2 , sulfur dioxide, phenyl isocyanate, an acetylenic ester or two NO molecules to give the corresponding four-membered ring annulated heterocycles. With sulfur or selenium 5 b gives the respective three-membered ring systems. N2 O reacts with 5 b to give a mixture of the related oxaborirane 18 and a unique [B]OH containing diazoalkane product 19.

Abstract
Incorporation of cationic boron atoms into molecular frameworks is an established strategy for creating chemical species with unusual bonding and reactivity but is rarely thought of as a way of enhancing molecular optoelectronic properties. Using boron formazanate dyes as examples, we demonstrate that the wavelengths, intensities, and type of the first electronic transitions in BN heterocycles can be modulated by varying the charge, coordination number, and supporting ligands at the cationic boron atom. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements and density-functional (DFT) calculations show that these modulations are caused by changes in the geometry and extent of π-conjugation of the boron formazanate ring. These findings suggest a new strategy for designing optoelectronic materials based on π-conjugated heterocycles containing boron and other main-group elements.

Abstract
Hydride abstraction from the heterocyclic carbene borane adducts (NHC)BH2 C6 F5 (NHC: IMes or IMe4 ) gave the B-H containing [(NHC)B(H)C6 F5 ]+ borenium cations. They added carbon monoxide to give the respective [(NHC)B(H)(C6 F5 )CO]+ boron carbonyl cations. Carbon nucleophiles add to the boron carbonyl to give [B](H) acyls. Hydride reduced the [B]CO cation to hydroxymethylborane derivatives.

Abstract
This work describes the synthesis and characterization of a highly reactive cationic borole. Halide abstraction with Li{Al[OC(CF3 )3 ]4 } from the NHC-chloroborole adduct yields the first stable NHC-supported 1-(Me NHC)-2,5-(SiMe3 )2 -3,4-(Ph*)2 -borole cation. Electronically, it features both a five-membered cyclic conjugated 4 π-electron system and a cationic charge and thus resembles the yet elusive cyclopentadienyl cation. The borole cation was characterized crystallographically, spectroscopically (NMR, UV/Vis), by cyclovoltammetry, microanalysis and mass-spectrometry and its electronic structure was probed computationally. The cation reacts with tolane and reversibly binds carbon monoxide. Direct comparison with the structurally related, yet neutral, 1-mesityl borole reveals strong Lewis acidity, reduced HOMO-LUMO gaps, and increased anti-aromatic character.

Abstract
The intramolecular C-H borylation of (hetero)arenes and alkenes using electrophilic boranes is a powerful transition metal free methodology for forming C-B bonds. These C-H borylation reactions are preceded by intermolecular bond (both dative and covalent) formation, with examples proceeding via initial C-B and N-B bond formation dominating this field thus both are discussed in depth herein. Less prevalent intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation reactions that proceed by intermolecular O-B, S-B and P-B bond formation are also summarised. Mechanistic studies are presented that reveal two mechanisms for C-H borylation, (i) electrophilic aromatic substitution (prevalent with B-X electrophiles); (ii) σ-bond metathesis mediated (prevalent with B-H and B-R electrophiles). To date, intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation is utilised mainly for accessing boron containing conjugated organic materials, however recent developments, summarized herein alongside early studies, have highlighted the applicability of this methodology for forming synthetically versatile organo-boronate esters and boron containing bioactives. The multitude of synthetic procedures reported for intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation contain many common features and this enables key requirements for successful C-H borylation and the factors effecting regioselectivity and substrate scope to be identified, discussed and summarized.

Abstract
In this paper we probe the reactivity of the borenium cations [C3H2(NCH2C6H4)(NCH2Ph)BH][B(C6F5)4] 2 and [C3H2(NCH2C6H4)2B][B(C6F5)4] 3. The reactions of 2 with cyclohexene or 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene gave the alkyl-aryl borenium salts [PhCH2(CHN)2CCH2C6H4BR][B(C6F5)4] (R = Cy 4, CH2CH2tBu 5) while the corresponding reactions with diphenylacetylene, 1-hexyne and 1-phenyl-1-propyne gave the aryl-alkenyl borenium cation salts [PhCH2(CHN)2CCH2C6H4BC(R1)C(H)R2][B(C6F5)4] (R1 = R2 = Ph 6, R1 = H, R2 = C4H97, R1 = Me, R2 = Ph 8a, R1 = Ph, R2 = Me 8b). In contrast, the reaction of 2 with ethynyldiphenylphosphane or 2-vinylpyridine lead to the formation of the adducts, [PhCH2(CHN)2CCH2C6H4B(H)P(Ph2)CCH][B(C6F5)4] 9, [PhCH2(CHN)2CCH2C6H4B(H)NC5H4C(H)CH2][B(C6F5)4] 10, respectively, while the more bulky donor H2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Ph)PMes2 gave 1,2-hydroboration of the phosphinoalkene affording [PhCH2(CHN)2CCH2C6H4BCH2CH(Ph)PMes2][B(C6F5)4] 11. In another vein of reactivity, one or two equivalents of the FLP, PtBu3/B(C6F5)3 is shown to react with 3 to give the zwitterionic borenium-borate species [C2H2(NCH(BC(CHNCH2C6H4)2)C6H4)(NCH(B(C6F5)3)C6H4)CB] 12 and the anionic bis-borate species[tBu3PH][C2H2(NCH(B(C6F5)3)2C6H4)2CB] 13. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
Certain borenium cations supported by carbenes can function as hydrogenation catalysts for imines. While many carbenes have been explored, variation of the other groups on boron has been less common. We have investigated several carbene-borane adducts in an attempt to understand the ability of a bis-amino cyclopropenylidene (BAC) carbene dicyclohexylborane adduct to hydrogenate relatively sterically unhindered benzyl imines. As an additional variant, a BAC carbene adduct of diphenylborane was prepared. A convenient preparation of diphenylboron fluoride via a potassium fluoroborinate salt was employed in this chemistry. Reaction of diphenylboron fluoride with a BAC carbene afforded a modest yield of a carbene-fluoroborane adduct. Reaction between the fluoroborinate salt and a lithium tetrafluoroborate adduct of the carbene provided the adduct in much improved yield and cleanliness, and the product was structurally characterized. The fluoroborate could be converted to a boron hydride through fluoride-hydride exchange with dimethylchlorosilane. The boron hydride adduct was also structurally characterized. Unlike the BAC carbene dicyclohexylborane adduct, the BAC carbene diphenylborane adduct showed essentially no activity in hydrogenation of imines or enamines.

Abstract
Boron-doping has long been recognized as a promising LUMO energy-lowering modification of graphene and related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Unfortunately, synthetic difficulties have been a significant bottleneck for the understanding, optimization, and application of precisely boron-doped PAHs for optoelectronic purposes. Herein, a facile one-pot hydroboration electrophilic borylation cascade/dehydrogenation approach from simple alkene precursors is coupled with postsynthetic B-substitution to give access to ten ambient-stable core- and periphery-tuned boron-doped PAHs. These include large hitherto unknown doubly boron-doped analogues of anthanthrene and triangulene. Crystallographic, optical, electrochemical, and computational studies were performed to clarify the effect of boron-doped PAH shape, size, and structure on optoelectronic properties. Our molecular tuning allowed the synthesis of molecules exhibiting visible-range absorption, near-unity fluorescence quantum yields, and, to our knowledge, the most facile electrochemical reductions of any reported ambient-stable boron-doped PAHs (corresponding to LUMO energy levels as low as fullerenes). Finally, our study describes the first implementation of a precise three-coordinate boron-substituted PAH as an acceptor material in organic solar cells with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 3%.

Abstract
The study of main-group molecules that behave and react similarly to transition-metal (TM) complexes has attracted significant interest in recent decades. Most notably, the attractive idea of replacing the all-too-often rare and costly metals from catalysis has motivated efforts to develop main-group-element-mediated reactions. Main-group elements, however, lack the electronic flexibility of TM complexes that arises from combinations of empty and filled d orbitals and that seem ideally suited to bind and activate many substrates. In this review, we look at boron, an element that despite its nonmetal nature, low atomic weight, and relative redox staticity has achieved great milestones in terms of TM-like reactivity. We show how in interelement cooperative systems, diboron molecules, and hypovalent complexes the fifth element can acquire a truly metallomimetic character. As we discuss, this character is powerfully demonstrated by the reactivity of boron-based molecules with H2, CO, alkynes, alkenes and even with N2.

Abstract
Boron and aluminum are lighter Group 13 elements, found in daily life commodities, and considered environmentally benign. Nevertheless, they markedly differ in their elemental properties (e.g., metal character, atomic radius). The use of Lewis acidic complexes of boron and aluminum for methods of bond activation and catalysis (e.g., hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates, polymerization of olefins and epoxides) is quickly expanding. The introduction of cationic charge may boost the metalloid-centered Lewis acidity and allow for its fine-tuning particularly with regard to preference for "hard" or "soft" Lewis bases (i.e., substrates). Especially the isolation of low-coordinate cations (number of ligand atoms smaller than four) demands elaborate techniques of thermodynamic and kinetic stabilization (i.e., electronic saturation and steric shielding) by a ligand system. Furthermore, the properties of the solvent and the counteranion must be considered with care. Here, selected examples of boron and aluminum cations are described.

Abstract
Since the discovery of the first stable N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) in the beginning of the 1990s, these divalent carbon species have become a common and available class of compounds, which have found numerous applications in academic and industrial research. Their important role as two-electron donor ligands, especially in transition metal chemistry and catalysis, is difficult to overestimate. In the past decade, there has been tremendous research attention given to the chemistry of low-coordinate main group element compounds. Significant progress has been achieved in stabilization and isolation of such species as Lewis acid/base adducts with highly tunable NHC ligands. This has allowed investigation of numerous novel types of compounds with unique electronic structures and opened new opportunities in the rational design of novel organic catalysts and materials. This Review gives a general overview of this research, basic synthetic approaches, key features of NHC-main group element adducts, and might be useful for the broad research community.

Abstract
Thermally induced dehydrogenation of the H-bridged cation L2B2H5(+) (L=Lewis base) is proposed to be the key step in the intramolecular C-H borylation of tertiary amine boranes activated with catalytic amounts of strong "hydridophiles". Loss of H2 from L2B2H5(+) generates the highly reactive cation L2B2H3(+), which in its sp(2)-sp(3) diborane(4) form then undergoes either an intramolecular C-H insertion with B-B bond cleavage, or captures BH3 to produce L2B3H6(+). The effect of the counterion stability on the outcome of the reaction is illustrated by formation of LBH2C6F5 complexes through disproportionation of L2B2H5(+) HB(C6F5)3(-) .

Abstract
The development of a one-step borylation of 1,3-diaryloxybenzenes, yielding novel boron-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds, is reported. The resulting boron-containing compounds possess high singlet-triplet excitation energies as a result of localized frontier molecular orbitals induced by boron and oxygen. Using these compounds as a host material, we successfully prepared phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes exhibiting high efficiency and adequate lifetimes. Moreover, using the present one-step borylation, we succeeded in the synthesis of an efficient, thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitter and boron-fused benzo[6]helicene.
