Beyond Molecules: Mesoporous Supramolecular Frameworks Self-Assembled from Coordination Cages and Inorganic Anions

Designing External Pores of Aluminum Oxo Polyhedrons for Efficient Iodine Capture

Although metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) expansion has been studied to date, it is still a rare occurrence for their porous intermolecular assembly for iodine capture. The major limitation is the lack of programmable and controllable methods for effectively constructing and utilizing the exterior cavities. Herein, the goal of programmable porous intermolecular assembly is realized in the first family of aluminum oxo polyhedrons (AlOPs) using ligands with directional H-bonding donor/acceptor pairs and auxiliary alcohols as structural regulation sites. The approach has the advantage of avoiding the use of expensive edge-directed ditopic and face-directed tritopic ligands in the general synthesis strategy of MOPs. Combining theoretical calculations and experiments, the intrinsic relationship is revealed between alcohol ligands and the growth mechanism of AlOPs. The maximum I2 uptake based on the mass gain during sorption corresponds to 2.35 g g-1, representing the highest reported I2 sorption by an MOP. In addition, it can be easily regenerated and maintained the iodine sorption capacity, revealing its further potential application. This method of constructing stable and programmable porous materials will provide a new way to solve problems such as radionuclide capture.

Chiroptical Activity Amplification of Chiral Metal Nanoclusters via Surface/Interface Solidification

It remains a grand challenge to amplify the chiroptical activity of chiral metal nanoclusters (NCs) although it is desirable for fundamental research and practical application. Herein, we report a strategy of surface/interface solidification (SIS) for enhancing the chiroptical activity of gold NCs. Structural analysis of [Au19(2R,4R/2S,4S-BDPP)6Cl2]3+ (BDPP is 2,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane) clusters reveals that one of the interfacial gold atoms is flexible between two sites and large space is present on the surface, thus hampering chirality transfer from surface chiral ligands to metal core and leading to low chiroptical activity. Following SIS by filling the flexible sites and replacing chlorides with thiolate ligands affords another pair of [Au20(2R,4R/2S,4S-BDPP)6(4-F-C6H4S)2]4+, which shows a more compact and organized structure and thus an almost 40-fold enhancement of chiroptical activity. This work not only provides an efficient approach for amplifying the chiroptical activity of metal nanoclusters but also highlights the significance of achiral components in shaping chiral nanostructures.

Porous Salts as Platforms for Heterogeneous Catalysis

The preparation of a new class of reactive porous solids, prepared via straightforward salt metathesis reactions, is described here. Reaction of the dimethylammonium salt of a magnesium-based porous coordination cage with the chloride salt of [Cr^II Cl(Me₄ cyclam)]⁺ affords a porous solid with concomitant removal of dimethylammonium chloride. The salt consists of the ions combined in the expected ratio based on their charge as confirmed by UV-vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, ion chromatography (IC), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The porous salt boasts a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 213 m²  g^-1 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the chromium(II) cations in the structure reside in the interstitial space between porous cages. Importantly, the chromium(II) centers, previously shown to react with O₂ to afford reactive chromium(III)-superoxide adducts, are still accessible in the solid state as confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy. The site-isolated reactive centers have competence toward hydrogen atom abstraction chemistry and display significantly increased stability and reactivity as compared to dissolved ions.

Chiral copper-hydride nanoclusters: synthesis, structure, and assembly

An effective strategy is developed to synthesize a novel and stable layered Cu nanocluster using a one-pot reduction method. The cluster, with a molecular formula of [Cu₁₄(^tBuS)₃(PPh₃)₇H₁₀]BF₄ which has been unambiguously characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibits different structures from previously reported analogues with core-shell geometries. In the absence of chiral ligands, the cluster displays intrinsic chirality owing to the non-covalent ligand-ligand interactions (e.g., C-H⋯Cu interactions and C-H⋯π interactions) to lock the central copper core. The interlacing of chiral-cluster enantiomers forms a large cavity, which lays the foundation for a series of potential applications such as drug filling and gas adsorption. Moreover, the C-H⋯H-C interactions of phenyl groups between different cluster moieties promote the formation of a dextral helix and realization of the self-assembly of nanostructures.

Application of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks in Environmental Remediation: Recent Advances and Future Trends

The hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of porous materials with crystalline frame structures, which are self-assembled from organic structures by hydrogen bonding in non-covalent bonds π-π packing and van der Waals force interaction. HOFs are widely used in environmental remediation due to their high specific surface area, ordered pore structure, pore modifiability, and post-synthesis adjustability of various physical and chemical forms. This work summarizes some rules for constructing stable HOFs and the synthesis of HOF-based materials (synthesis of HOFs, metallized HOFs, and HOF-derived materials). In addition, the applications of HOF-based materials in the field of environmental remediation are introduced, including adsorption and separation (NH3, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2, C2H2/C2He and CeH6, C2H2/CO2, Xe/Kr, etc.), heavy metal and radioactive metal adsorption, organic dye and pesticide adsorption, energy conversion (producing H2 and CO2 reduced to CO), organic dye degradation and pollutant sensing (metal ion, aniline, antibiotic, explosive steam, etc.). Finally, the current challenges and further studies of HOFs (such as functional modification, molecular simulation, application extension as remediation of contaminated soil, and cost assessment) are discussed. It is hoped that this work will help develop widespread applications for HOFs in removing a variety of pollutants from the environment.

An atomically precise Ag18Cu8 nanocluster with rich alkynyl-metal coordination structures and unique SbF6- assembling modes

Elucidating the coordination structures and assembling modes of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) remains a hot topic as it gives answers to the underlying mechanism of nanomaterials and bulk materials in terms of structure-property relationships. Here we report a novel silver-copper alloy NC featuring rich alkynyl-metal coordination modes and unique SbF₆^- assembling structures. The NC, with the composition of [Ag₁₈Cu₈(dppp)₄(^tBu-C₆H₄CC)₂₂](SbF₆)₄ (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)-propane), was prepared by a stepwise synthetic approach. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that such a NC featured a staircase-like Ag₁₈Cu₈ kernel, which was protected by hybrid alkynyl and dppp ligands in diverse coordination structures and multiple environments. The structural analysis also revealed the unique function of SbF₆^- in inducing the assembly of cluster moieties, highlighting the importance of counterions in assembling nanomolecules. The diverse coordination structures of the protective ligands with metal ions and the indispensable roles of counterions in assembling the cluster moieties have also been supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, making it a model system to showcase the uniqueness of atomically precise metal NCs in illustrating the coordination chemistry of nanomaterials and bulk materials at the molecular level.

Supramolecular Coordination Cages for Artificial Photosynthesis and Synthetic Photocatalysis

Because sunlight is the most abundant energy source on earth, it has huge potential for practical applications ranging from sustainable energy supply to light driven chemistry. From a chemical perspective, excited states generated by light make thermodynamically uphill reactions possible, which forms the basis for energy storage into fuels. In addition, with light, open-shell species can be generated which open up new reaction pathways in organic synthesis. Crucial are photosensitizers, which absorb light and transfer energy to substrates by various mechanisms, processes that highly depend on the distance between the molecules involved. Supramolecular coordination cages are well studied and synthetically accessible reaction vessels with single cavities for guest binding, ensuring close proximity of different components. Due to high modularity of their size, shape, and the nature of metal centers and ligands, cages are ideal platforms to exploit preorganization in photocatalysis. Herein we focus on the application of supramolecular cages for photocatalysis in artificial photosynthesis and in organic photo(redox) catalysis. Finally, a brief overview of immobilization strategies for supramolecular cages provides tools for implementing cages into devices. This review provides inspiration for future design of photocatalytic supramolecular host-guest systems and their application in producing solar fuels and complex organic molecules.

Anion Binding as a Strategy for the Synthesis of Porous Salts

Porous salts have recently emerged as a promising new class of ultratunable permanently microporous solids. These adsorbents, which were first reported as ionic solids based on porous cations and anions, can be isolated from a wide variety of charged, permanently porous coordination cages. A challenge in realizing the full tunability of such systems, however, lies in the fact that the majority of coordination cages for which surface areas have been reported are comprised of charge-balanced inorganic and organic building blocks that result in neutral cages. As such, most reported permanently porous coordination cages cannot be used as reagents in the synthesis of porous salts. Here, we show that the facile reaction of TBAX (TBA⁺ = tetra-n-butylammonium; X = F^- and Cl^-) with molybdenum paddlewheel-based coordination cages of the M₄L₄ and M₂₄L₂₄ lantern and cuboctahedra structure types, respectively, affords charged cages by virtue of coordination of halide anions to the internal and/or external metal sites on these structures, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. At a practical level, the TBAX/cage reactions, which are fully reversible upon isolation of the cage with the appropriate solvent, solubilize otherwise rigorously insoluble cages. This method significantly increases the solution processability of these highly porous solids. Toward the formation of new porous salts, halide binding also serves to incorporate charge on neutral cages and make them amenable to simple salt metathesis reactions to afford new porous salts based on anions and cations with intrinsic porosity. A combination of diffraction methods and a suite of spectroscopic tools confirms speciation of the isolated solids, which represent a new class of highly tunable porous salts. Ultimately, this work represents a roadmap for the preparation of new porous solids and showcases the utility and broad applicability of anion binding as a strategy for the synthesis of porous salts.

Metal-organic cages against toxic chemicals and pollutants

The continuous release of toxic chemicals and pollutants into the atmosphere and natural waters threatens, directly and indirectly, human health, the sustainability of the planet, and the future of society. Materials capable of capturing or chemically inactivating hazardous substances, which are harmful to humans and the environment, are critical in the modern age. Metal-organic cages (MOCs) show great promise as materials against harmful agents both in solution and in solid state. This Highlight features examples of MOCs that selectively encapsulate, adsorb, or remove from a medium noxious gases, toxic organophosphorus compounds, water pollutant oxoanions, and some emerging organic contaminants. Remarkably, the toxicity of interacting contaminants may be lowered by MOCs as well. Specific cases pertaining to the use of these cages for the chemical degradation of some harmful substances are presented. This Highlight thus aims to provide an overview of the possibilities of MOCs in this area and new methodological insights into their operation for enhancing their activity and the engineering of further remediation applications.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as ‘glue’ to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

Heterometal-Organic Cages as Photo-Fenton-like Catalysts

Metal-organic cages, a class of supramolecular containers constructed by the self-assembly of metal ions and organic ligands, show great promise as catalytic agents. In this work, we designed and synthesized a series of rhombic dodecahedral Ni-Cu heterometal imidazolate cages (Ni₈Cu₆L₂₄) that can act as highly active photo-Fenton-like catalysts. These cages possess a high ability to generate hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) under visible light in the presence of H₂O₂, which can rapidly degrade organic pollutants (e.g., rhodamine B, methylene blue, and methyl orange) into CO₂ and H₂O. Besides, they are robust catalysts, with high catalytic activity and reusability under conditions in high H₂O₂ concentration, providing potentially advanced materials for degrading persistent organic pollutants.

Surface chiroselective assembly of enantiopure crystalline porous films containing bichiral building blocks

The development of chiral crystalline porous materials (CPMs) containing multiple chiral building blocks plays an important role in chiral chemistry and applications but is a challenging task. Herein, we report the first example of bichiral building block based enantiopure CPM films containing metal-organic cages (MOCs) and metal complexes. The functionalized substrate was immersed subsequently into homochiral metal complex (R)- or (S)-Mn(DCH)3 (DCH = 1,2-diaminocyclohexane) and racemic Ti4L6 cage (L = embonate) solutions by a layer-by-layer growth method. During the assembly process, the substrate surface coordinated with (R)- or (S)-Mn(DCH)3 can, respectively, layer-by-layer chiroselectively connect Δ- or Λ-Ti4L6 cages to form homochiral (R, Δ)- or (S, Λ)-CPM films with a preferred [111] growth orientation, tunable thickness and homogeneous surface. The resulting enantiopure CPM films show strong chirality, photoluminescence, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties as well as good enantioselective adsorption toward enantiomers of 2-butanol and methyl-lactate. The present in situ surface chiroselective strategy opens a new route to assemble homochiral CPM films containing multiple chiral building blocks for chiral applications.

Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C-H⋅⋅⋅F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms

We report the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100 % optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S-BINAPCuBH₄ (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au₇ Ag₆ Cu₂ (R- or S-BINAP)₃ (SCH₂ Ph)₆ ]SbF₆ nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomers exhibited perfect mirror images, and unprecedentedly, the self-assembly driven by the C-H⋅⋅⋅F interaction between the phenyl groups of the superatom moieties and SbF₆ ^- anions induced the formation of bio-mimic left- and right-handed helices, achieving the tertiary chiral nanostructures. DFT calculations revealed the connections between the molecular details and chiral optical activity.

Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Cages for Visible-Light-Driven Water Oxidation

Water oxidation to molecular oxygen is indispensable but a challenge for splitting H₂O. In this work, a series of Co-based metal-organic cages (MOCs) for photoinduced water oxidation were prepared. MOC-1 with both bis(μ-oxo) bridged dicobalt and Co-O (O from H₂O) displays catalytic activity with an initial oxygen evolution rate of 80.4 mmol/g/h and a TOF of 7.49 × 10^-3 s^-1 in 10 min. In contrast, MOC-2 containing only Co-O (O from H₂O) in the structure results in a lower oxygen evolution rate (40.8 mmol/g/h, 4.78 × 10^-3 s^-1), while the amount of oxygen evolved from the solution of MOC-4 without both active sites is undetectable. Isotope experiments with or without H₂¹⁸O as the reactant successfully demonstrate that the molecular oxygen was produced from water oxidation. Photophysical and electrochemical studies reveal that photoinduced water oxidation initializes via electron transfer from the excited [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺* to Na₂S₂O₈, and then, the cobalt active sites further donate electrons to the oxidized [Ru(bpy)₃]³⁺ to drive water oxidation. This proof-of-concept study indicates that MOCs can work as potential efficient catalysts for photoinduced water oxidation.

Heterogeneous postassembly modification of zirconium metal-organic cages in supramolecular frameworks

We report a heterogeneous postassembly modification (PAM) to synthesize a zirconium metal-organic cage decorated with acrylate functional groups, ZrT-1-AA, which cannot be synthesized by direct coordination-driven self-assembly owing to the reactivity and instability of the ligand. The PAM process is carried out in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation under mild reaction conditions with high efficiency, which is confirmed by ESI-TOF-MS and 1H NMR. In addition, ZrT-1-AA is crosslinked into shaped materials to demonstrate its potential applications. The proposed PAM strategy sheds light on the development of Zr-MOCs decorated with reactive functional groups, whose introduction is challenging or impossible via direct self-assembly.

Selective aldehyde reductions in neutral water catalysed by encapsulation in a supramolecular cage

The enhancement of reactivity inside supramolecular coordination cages has many analogies to the mode of action of enzymes, and continues to inspire the design of new catalysts for a range of reactions. However, despite being a near-ubiquitous class of reactions in organic chemistry, enhancement of the reduction of carbonyls to their corresponding alcohols remains very much underexplored in supramolecular coordination cages. Herein, we show that encapsulation of small aromatic aldehydes inside a supramolecular coordination cage allows the reduction of these aldehydes with the mild reducing agent sodium cyanoborohydride to proceed with high selectivity (ketones and esters are not reduced) and in good yields. In the absence of the cage, low pH conditions are essential for any appreciable conversion of the aldehydes to the alcohols. In contrast, the specific microenvironment inside the cage allows this reaction to proceed in bulk solution that is pH-neutral, or even basic. We propose that the cage acts to stabilise the protonated oxocarbenium ion reaction intermediates (enhancing aldehyde reactivity) whilst simultaneously favouring the encapsulation and reduction of smaller aldehydes (which fit more easily inside the cage). Such dual action (enhancement of reactivity and size-selectivity) is reminiscent of the mode of operation of natural enzymes and highlights the tremendous promise of cage architectures as selective catalysts.

Supramolecular and suprabiomolecular photochemistry: a perspective overview

In this perspective review article, we have attempted to bring out the important current trends of research in the areas of supramolecular and suprabiomolecular photochemistry. Since the spans of the subject areas are very vast, it is impossible to cover all the aspects within the limited space of this review article. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to assimilate the basic understanding of how supramolecular interactions can significantly change the photophysical and other related physiochemical properties of chromophoric dyes and drugs, which have enormous academic and practical implications. We have discussed with reference to relevant chemical systems where supramolecularly assisted modulations in the properties of chromophoric dyes and drugs can be used or have already been used in different areas like sensing, dye/drug stabilization, drug delivery, functional materials, and aqueous dye laser systems. In supramolecular assemblies, along with their conventional photophysical properties, the acid-base properties of prototropic dyes, as well as the excited state prototautomerization and related proton transfer behavior of proton donor/acceptor dye molecules, are also largely modulated due to supramolecular interactions, which are often reflected very explicitly through changes in their absorption and fluorescence characteristics, providing us many useful insights into these chemical systems and bringing out intriguing applications of such changes in different applied areas. Another interesting research area in supramolecular photochemistry is the excitation energy transfer from the donor to acceptor moieties in self-assembled systems which have immense importance in light harvesting applications, mimicking natural photosynthetic systems. In this review article, we have discussed varieties of these aspects, highlighting their academic and applied implications. We have tried to emphasize the progress made so far and thus to bring out future research perspectives in the subject areas concerned, which are anticipated to find many useful applications in areas like sensors, catalysis, electronic devices, pharmaceuticals, drug formulations, nanomedicine, light harvesting, and smart materials.

A pentazolate-based bowl-shaped molecular container

A three-dimensional bowl-shaped molecular container based on pentazole was first synthesized. These containers are sealed and linked by the assembled "molecular plane". Each container has an ovoid cavity occupied by one DMSO guest molecule. The self-assembly of this molecular container will provide opportunities for the use of pentazole in supramolecular chemistry.

Synthetic Approaches to Metallo-Supramolecular CoII Polygons and Potential Use for H2O Oxidation

Metal-directed self-assembly has been applied to prepare supramolecular coordination polygons which adopt tetrahedral (1) or trigonal disklike topologies (2). In the solid state, 2 assembles into a stable halide-metal-organic material (Hal-MOM-2), which catalyzes H₂O oxidation under photo- and electrocatalytic conditions, operating with a maximum TON = 78 and TOF = 1.26 s^-1. DFT calculations attribute the activity to a Co^III-oxyl species. This study provides the first account of how Co^II imine based supramolecules can be employed as H₂O oxidation catalysts.

"Eggs in egg cartons": co-crystallization to embed molecular cages into crystalline lattices

Discrete (M3L2) n cages assembled from a tripodal ligand (L) and metal ions (M: Cu(i) or Ag(i)) are embedded in networked coordination hosts formed by partial dissociation of the same discrete cages during the crystallization process. The resulting "eggs-in-an-egg-carton" structures provide unique examples of the co-crystallization of discrete and infinite coordination frameworks.

Coordinative-to-covalent transformation, isomerization dynamics, and logic gate application of dithienylethene based photochromic cages

Photochromic coordinative cages containing dynamic C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N imine bonds are assembled from a dithienylethene-based aldehyde and tris-amine precursors via metallo-component self-assembly. The resulting metal-templated cages are then reduced and demetalated into pure covalent-organic cages (COCs), which are otherwise difficult to prepare via de novo organic synthesis. Both the obtained coordinative and covalent cages can be readily interconverted between the ring-open (o-isomer) and one-lateral ring-closed (c-isomer) forms by UV/vis light irradiation, demonstrating distinct absorption, luminescence and photoisomerization dynamics. Specifically, the ring-closed c-COCs show a blue-shifted absorption band compared with analogous metal-templated cages, which can be applied in photoluminescence (PL) color-tuning of upconversion materials in different ways, showing potential for constructing multi-readout logic gate systems.

Metal-templated component self-assembly and then demetalation affords photochromic covalent organic cages applicable for upconversion PL-color tuning for logic gates.

Silver-Driven Coordination Self-Assembly of Tetraphenylethene Stereoisomer: Construct Charming Topologies and Their Mechanochromic Behaviors

A series of silver coordination complexes (CCs) have been synthesized through self-assembly of five pyridine-substituted tetraphenylethylene stereoisomer ligands with silver ions (named Ag-TPE-2by-1-E, Ag-TPE-2by-2-E, Ag-TPE-2by-2-Z, Ag-TPE-2by-3-E, and Ag-TPE-2by-3-Z). These silver CCs show distinct topologies including beaded chain frameworks, linear structures, and discrete metallacycles. The single-crystal analysis results reveal the critical role of the space distribution of the coordination site and stereoisomer ligands in controlling the silver CCs' geometry configuration and modulating the optical properties. Luminescent investigations revealed that Ag-TPE-2by-2-E, Ag-TPE-2by-2-Z, Ag-TPE-2by-3-E, and Ag-TPE-2by-3-Z possess obvious mechanocharomic behaviors, which can be achieved several reversible cycles through repeated grinding and methanol soaking processes. However, the Ag-TPE-2by-1-E showed tenacious stability toward mechanical grinding and temperature. Thus, these silver CCs provide a good platform to investigate the influence of the space distribution of the coordination site of ligands on their geometry and mechanocharomic properties.

Supramolecular assemblies based on Fe8L12 cubic metal–organic cages: synergistic adsorption and spin-crossover properties

Solvent-assisted coordination driven assembly of a supramolecular architecture featuring two types of connectivity from discrete nanocages

The rapid development of supramolecular chemistry provides a powerful bottom-up approach to construct various well-defined nano-architectures with increasing complexity and functionality. Compared to that of small and simple nanometric objects, the self-assembly of larger and more complex nanometric objects, such as nanocages, remains a significant challenge. Herein, we used a discrete nanocage as the monomer to successfully construct a novel three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture, which comprises two types of nanocage building units with different connectivity, using the solvent-assisted coordination-driven assembly approach. The mechanism of this supramolecular assembly process was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, which identified for the first time the formation of a nanocage dimer intermediate during the assembly process. The assembly of discrete nanocages into a 3D supramolecular architecture led to remarkable enhancement of stability and gas adsorption properties.

Cage Based Crystalline Covalent Organic Frameworks

The first two cage based crystalline covalent organic frameworks, cage-COF-1 and cage-COF-2, were constructed from a prism-like three-aldehyde-containing molecular cage. The cage contains two horizontal phloroglucinol and three vertical triazine moieties forming three identical V-shaped cavities. By reacting with p-phenylenediamine and 4,4'-biphenyldiamine, the two cage-COFs were formed with a hexagonal skeleton and possess a unique structure. Due to the pillared cage nodes, the linkers are hanging with their π-surfaces but not C-H sites exposed to the pore, and enjoy certain rotational dynamics as suggested by ¹³C CP/MAS NMR. The antidirection of the diimine linkages leads to rippled layers which pack in unique ABC mode through alternate stacking of the cage twosided faces in both AB and AC layers. Such packing forms trigonal channels along c axis which are interconnected in ab plane due to the large open space created across the hanging linkers, resembling the porous characteristics of 3D COFs. The cage-COFs have a permanent porosity and can adsorb CO₂ facilitated by the intrinsic cage cavities that serve as prime adsorption sites. The unprecedented cage-COFs not only merge the borderline of 2D and 3D COFs but also bridge porous organic cages to extended crystalline organic frameworks.

Ionic organic cage-encapsulating phase-transferable metal clusters

Exploration of metal clusters (MCs) adaptive to both aqueous and oil phases without disturbing their size is promising for a broad scope of applications. The state-of-the-art approach via ligand-binding may perturb MCs' size due to varied metal-ligand binding strength when shuttling between solvents of different polarity. Herein, we applied physical confinement of a series of small noble MCs (<1 nm) inside ionic organic cages (I-Cages), which by means of anion exchange enables reversible transfer of MCs between aqueous and hydrophobic solutions without varying their ultrasmall size. Moreover, the MCs@I-Cage hybrid serves as a recyclable, reaction-switchable catalyst featuring high activity in liquid-phase NH3BH3 (AB) hydrolysis reaction with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 115 min-1.

Permanent porous hydrogen-bonded frameworks with two types of Brønsted acid sites for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis

The search for porous materials with strong Brønsted acid sites for challenging reactions has long been of significant interest, but it remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Here we demonstrate a cage extension strategy to construct chiral permanent porous hydrogen-bonded frameworks with strong Brønsted acid groups for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. We report the synthesis of two octahedral coordination cages using enantiopure 4,4’,6,6’-tetra(benzoate) ligand of 1,1’-spirobiindane-7,7’-phosphoric acid and Ni₄/Co₄-p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene clusters. Intercage hydrogen-bonds and hydrophobic interactions between tert-butyl groups direct the hierarchical assembly of the cages into a permanent porous material. The chiral phosphoric acid-containing frameworks can be high efficient and recyclable heterogeneous Brønsted acid catalysts for asymmetric [3+2] coupling of indoles with quinone monoimine and Friedel-Crafts alkylations of indole with aryl aldimines. The afforded enantioselectivities (up to 99.9% ee) surpass those of the homogeneous counterparts and compare favorably with those of the most enantioselective homogeneous phosphoric acid catalysts reported to date.

Bottom-Up Construction and Reversible Structural Transformation of Supramolecular Isomers based on Large Truncated Tetrahedra

A rational synthetic strategy to construct two supramolecular isomers based on polyoxovanadate organic polyhedra with tetrahedral symmetries is presented. VMOP-α, a low-temperature product, has an extremely large cell volume (470 842 ų ), which is one of the top three for well-defined MOPs. The corner-to-corner packing of tetrahedra leads to a quite low density of 0.174 g cm^-3 with 1D channels (ca. 5.4 nm). The effective pore volume is up to 93.6 % of cell volume, nearly the largest found in MOPs. For the high-temperature outcome, VMOP-β, the cell volume is only 15 513 ų . The packing mode of tetrahedra is corner-to-face, giving rise to a high-density architecture (1.324 g cm^-3 ; channel 0.8 nm). Supramolecular structural transformation between VMOP-α and VMOP-β can be reversibly achieved by temperature-induced solvent-mediated transformation. These findings give a good opportunity for understanding 3D supramolecular aggregation and crystal growth based on large molecular tectonics.

Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthetic Strategies and Emerging Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention over the past two decades due to their highly promising applications not only in the fields of gas storage, separation, catalysis, drug delivery, and sensors, but also in relatively new fields such as electric, magnetic, and optical materials resulting from their extremely high surface areas, open channels and large pore cavities compared with traditional porous materials like carbon and inorganic zeolites. Particularly, MOFs involving pores within the mesoscopic scale possess unique textural properties, leading to a series of research in the design and applications of mesoporous MOFs. Unlike previous Reviews, apart from focusing on recent advances in the synthetic routes, unique characteristics and applications of mesoporous MOFs, this Review also mentions the derivatives, composites, and hierarchical MOF-based systems that contain mesoporosity, and technical boundaries and challenges brought by the drawbacks of mesoporosity. Moreover, this Review subsequently reveals promising perspectives of how recently discovered approaches to different morphologies of MOFs (not necessarily entirely mesoporous) and their corresponding performances can be extended to minimize the shortcomings of mesoporosity, thus providing a wider and brighter scope of future research into mesoporous MOFs, but not just limited to the finite progress in the target substances alone.

Hot-Pressing Method To Prepare Imidazole-Based Zn(II) Metal-Organic Complexes Coatings for Highly Efficient Air Filtration

Particulate matters (PMs) air pollution has become a serious environmental issue due to its great threat to human health. Herein, metal-organic complexes PBM-Zn1 and PBM-Zn2 coatings (noted as PBM-Zn-Filter) have been produced by the hot-pressing method on various substrates for the first time. Layer-by-layer PBM-Zn-Filters were also obtained through varying hot-pressing cycles. The obtained PBM-Zn-Filters with high robustness show excellent performance in PMs removal. In particular, benefiting from thelarger conjugation system, micropore structure, lower pressure drop, higher electrostatic potential ζ, and electron cloud exposed metal center of PBM-Zn2 (DFT calculations), PBM-Zn2@melamine foam-4 gives the highest removal rates, PM2.5:99.5% ± 1.2% and PM10:99.3% ± 1.1%, and the removal efficiency for capture PM2.5 and PM10 particles in cigarette smoke were both retained at high levels (>95.5%) after 24 h tests. More importantly, a homemade mask is made up by imbedding the PBM-Zn2@melamine foam-4 into a commercial breathing mask, which shows higher removal efficiency, lower pressure drop, smaller thickness, and higher quality factor than two commercial breathing masks, the PMs removal efficiencies for both PM2.5 and PM10 are 99.6% ± 0.5% and 99.4% ± 0.8%, and acceptable air resistance are demonstrated.

Design and Assembly of a Chiral Metallosalen-Based Octahedral Coordination Cage for Supramolecular Asymmetric Catalysis

Supramolecular containers featuring both high catalytic activity and high enantioselectivity represent a design challenge of practical importance. Herein, it is demonstrated that a chiral octahedral coordination cage can be constructed by using twelve enantiopure Mn(salen)-derived dicarboxylic acids as linear linkers and six Zn₄ -p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene clusters as tetravalent four-connected vertices. The porous cage features a large hydrophobic cavity (≈3944 ų ) decorated with catalytically active metallosalen species and is shown to be an efficient and recyclable asymmetric catalyst for the oxidative kinetic resolution of racemic secondary alcohols and the epoxidation of olefins with up to >99 % enantiomeric excess. The cage architecture not only prevents intermolecular deactivation and stabilizes the Mn(salen) catalysts but also encapsulates substrates and concentrates reactants in the cavity, resulting in enhanced reactivity and enantioselectivity relative to the free metallosalen catalyst.
