Pd Nanocubes@ZIF-8: Integration of Plasmon-Driven Photothermal Conversion with a Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient and Selective Catalysis

Enhancing the Lewis acidity of single atom Tb via introduction of boron to achieve efficient photothermal synergistic CO2 cycloaddition

Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly urgent to lower the escalating carbon dioxide (CO2) to reduce greenhouse effect. Fortunately, it is an ideal strategy by using the inexhaustible solar energy as the driving force to manipulate the cycloaddition reaction, the atomic efficiency of which is 100 %. This work represents the first attempt on utilization of rare-earth metal Tb with atomic dispersion, and the structure of Tb coordinated with 4 N-atoms and 2B-atoms was constructed on interconnected carbon hollow spheres. The introduction of electron-deficient B reduces the electron density of Tb, thereby boosting Lewis acidity and promoting the occurrence of ring-opening reaction. The mechanism exploration enunciates that TbN4B2/C is a photothermal synergistic catalyst, the combined action of photogenerated electrons and strong Lewis acidic site of Tb reduces the free energy of the rate-determining step, and then improving the yield of cyclic carbonate up to 739 mmol g-1h-1.

Recent Applications of Photothermal Conversion in Organic Synthesis

Photothermal conversion is a novel heating method that has emerged in recent years, wherein certain species can convert light to heat with great efficiency. These photothermal agents have shown immense promise for generating nanoscale thermal gradients under mild, visible light irradiation, providing a pathway for combining photochemistry with thermally driven reactivity. While this novel heating mechanism has been leveraged to great effect for applications such as photothermal therapeutics and steam water purification, it has seen limited use in organic synthesis. This outlook explores instances wherein the photothermal effect was used directly or as a synergistic component to drive organic reactions and postulates how it may be used moving forward.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Highly Active and Sintering-Resistant Pt Clusters Supported on FeOx-Hydroxyapatite Achieved by Tailoring Strong Metal-Support Interactions

The catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts is closely related to their structure. While Pt-based catalysts are widely used in many catalytic reactions because of their exceptional intrinsic activity, they tend to deactivate in high-temperature reactions, requiring a tedious and expensive regeneration process. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a promising strategy to improve the stability of supported metal nanoparticles, but often at the price of the activity due to either the coverage of the active sites by support overlay and/or the too-strong metal-support bonding. Herein, we newly constructed a supported Pt cluster catalyst by introducing FeOx into hydroxyapatite (HAP) support to fine-tune the SMSIs. The catalyst exhibited not only high catalytic activity but also sintering resistance, without deactivation in a 100 h test for catalytic CO oxidation. Detailed characterizations reveal that FeOx introduced into HAP weaken the strong covalent metal-support interaction (CMSI) between Pt and FeOx while simultaneously inhibiting the oxidative strong metal-support interaction (OMSI) between Pt and HAP, giving rise to both high activity and thermal stability of the supported Pt clusters.

Heteroatom-Doped Ag25 Nanoclusters Encapsulated in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with unique optical properties and abundant catalytic sites are promising in photocatalysis. However, their light-induced instability and the difficulty of utilizing the photogenerated carriers for photocatalysis pose significant challenges. Here, MAg24 (M=Ag, Pd, Pt, and Au) NCs doped with diverse single heteroatoms have been encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH2, affording MAg24@UiO-66-NH2. Strikingly, compared with Ag25@UiO-66-NH2, the MAg24@UiO-66-NH2 doped with heteroatom exhibits much enhanced activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production, among which AuAg24@UiO-66-NH2 presents the best activity up to 3.6 mmol g-1 h-1, far superior to all other counterparts. Moreover, they display excellent photocatalytic recyclability and stability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that MAg24 NCs encapsulated into the MOF create a favorable charge transfer pathway, similar to a Z-scheme heterojunction, when exposed to visible light. This promotes charge separation, along with optimized Ag electronic state, which are responsible for the superior activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Tailoring Charge Flow in Carbon-Defective Cu-MOF with Pd Nanoparticles: A Boost for Visible Light Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor in Bioanalysis

The photoactive material was of significant importance in organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) bioanalysis as it influences the photoinduced voltage and the μC* product, resulting in a varying sensor sensitivity. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as photoactive materials in OPECT analysis is promising, yet it remains a grand challenge due to the inherently narrow light absorption range and high electron-hole recombination rate. Herein, Pd NPs were encapsulated as electron acceptors into the Cu-MOF using a double-solvent method, followed by pyrolysis at the proper temperature. After pyrolysis, Cu-MOF transformed into a carbon defect-rich composite of CuO and Cu2O while retaining its high porosity and structural morphology. The resulting carbon defect-rich pyrolysis Cu-MOF (p-Cu-MOF) served as an active support, facilitating the separation of electrons and holes. The photoelectrons trigger the electron transfer of adjacent active metal components and the formation of a Schottky junction between Pd and the MOFs. This effect induces the electron donation from the MOFs. Moreover, Pd/pyrolysis Cu-MOF exhibits significantly higher visible light absorption, better water stability, and higher electrical conductivity compared to Cu-MOF and Pd/Cu-MOF. An OPECT sensor was fabricated by utilizing Pd/p-Cu-MOF as the photoactive material and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the channel material on an integrated laser-etched FTO. The aptamer was used as the recognition element, enabling sensitive and efficient detection of residual isocarbophos.

Enhanced photocatalysis of metal/covalent organic frameworks by plasmonic nanoparticles and homo/hetero-junctions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention in photocatalysis due to their unique features including extensive surface area, adjustable pores, and the ability to incorporate various functional groups. However, challenges such as limited visible light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination often hinder their photocatalytic efficiency. Recent developments have introduced plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) and junctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF/COF-based photocatalysts improved by integration of plasmonic NPs and junctions. We begin by examining the utilization of plasmonic NPs, known for absorbing longer-wavelength light compared to typical MOFs/COFs. These NPs exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when excited, effectively enhancing the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. Moreover, we discuss the role of homo/hetero-junctions in facilitating charge separation, further boosting the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. The mechanisms behind the improved photocatalytic performance of these composites are discussed, along with an assessment of challenges and opportunities in the field, guiding future research directions.

Spectroscopic visualization of reversible hydrogen spillover between palladium and metal-organic frameworks toward catalytic semihydrogenation

Hydrogen spillover widely occurs in a variety of hydrogen-involved chemical and physical processes. Recently, metal-organic frameworks have been extensively explored for their integration with noble metals toward various hydrogen-related applications, however, the hydrogen spillover in metal/MOF composite structures remains largely elusive given the challenges of collecting direct evidence due to system complexity. Here we show an elaborate strategy of modular signal amplification to decouple the behavior of hydrogen spillover in each functional regime, enabling spectroscopic visualization for interfacial dynamic processes. Remarkably, we successfully depict a full picture for dynamic replenishment of surface hydrogen atoms under interfacial hydrogen spillover by quick-scanning extended X-ray absorption fine structure, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics calculation. With interfacial hydrogen spillover, Pd/ZIF-8 catalyst shows unique alkyne semihydrogenation activity and selectivity for alkynes molecules. The methodology demonstrated in this study also provides a basis for further exploration of interfacial species migration.

Well-defined Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) hollow nanoflower heterostructures for selective dection and monitoring of benzoylurea insecticides from food and water

Developing a platform for the selective detection and effective monitor of toxic contaminants is a major challenge to address organic contaminants contamination in environmental science. Here, for the first time, the thickness-controllable Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) heterogeneous materials with special hollow nanoflower (HFs) morphology had been synthesized. The morphology and shell thickness of the nano-petal could be tuned by changing the reaction time. The resultant Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) HFs exhibited the hollow nanoflower shapes and exposed abundant accessible active sites. The enrichment performance of Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) HFs was approximately 1.4-1.7 times that of spherical Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) composite for benzoylurea insecticides (BUs). Furthermore, the optimal sample achieved the wide linearity (0.05-500 ng mL-1) and low limits of detection, (0.003-0.01 ng mL-1) for BUs. The research provides a new strategy for highly sensitive detection and monitoring of harmful pollutant levels in the environment.

Quantitative Study on the Influence of Bromide Ions toward the Reduction Kinetics for Size-Tunable Palladium Nanocubes

During the preparation of nanocrystals, regulating the dosage of key additives in the reaction system and the reaction temperature commonly affects the sizes and morphologies of the products. Despite the fact that bromide ions play a pivotal role in the synthesis of palladium nanocubes (Pd NCs), there is still a lack of quantitative and in-depth research on how the ions affect the reduction kinetics of Pd precursors and further on products. In this work, Pd NCs with different sizes have been prepared under various reaction conditions coupled to a systematic mechanism study. Quantitative measurements demonstrate that the reduction processes could be considered quasi-first-order reactions, and the corresponding kinetic parameters have been obtained. Furthermore, a linear relationship is discovered between k and the average size (d) of Pd NCs. The investigation on the growth patterns of four chosen systems reveals that given reaction conditions lead to certain results with unique growth patterns.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

Tetrahedral Imidazolate Frameworks with Auxiliary Ligands (TIF-Ax): Synthetic Strategies and Applications

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Recently, we reported a new kind of MOF, namely tetrahedral imidazolate frameworks with auxiliary ligands (TIF-Ax), by adding linear ligands (Hint) into the zinc-imidazolate system. Introducing linear ligands into the M2+-imidazolate system overcomes the limitation of imidazole derivatives. Thanks to the synergistic effect of two different types of ligands, a series of new TIF-Ax with interesting topologies and a special pore environment has been reported, and they have attracted extensive attention in gas adsorption, separation, catalysis, heavy metal ion capture, and so on. In this review, we give a comprehensive overview of TIF-Ax, including their synthesis methods, structural diversity, and multi-field applications. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of the rational design and syntheses of new TIF-Ax from the aspects of their composition, solvent, and template. This review provides deep insight into TIF-Ax and a reference for scholars with backgrounds of porous materials, gas separation, and catalysis.

The Superiority of TiO2 Supported on Nickel Foam over Ni-Doped TiO2 in the Photothermal Decomposition of Acetaldehyde

Acetaldehyde decomposition was performed under heating at a temperature range of 25-125 °C and UV irradiation on TiO2 doped by metallic Ni powder and TiO2 supported on nickel foam. The process was carried out in a high-temperature reaction chamber, "The Praying MantisTM", with simultaneous in situ FTIR measurements and UV irradiation. Ni powder was added to TiO2 in the quantity of 0.5 to 5.0 wt%. The photothermal measurements of acetaldehyde decomposition indicated that the highest yield of acetaldehyde conversion on TiO2 and UV irradiation was obtained at 75 °C. The doping of nickel to TiO2 did not increase its photocatalytic activity. Contrary to that, the application of nickel foam as a support for TiO2 appeared to be highly advantageous because it increased the decomposition of acetaldehyde from 31 to 52% at 25 °C, and then to 85% at 100 °C in comparison with TiO2 itself. At the same time, the mineralization of acetaldehyde to CO2 doubled in the presence of nickel foam. However, oxidized nickel foam used as support for TiO2 was detrimental. Most likely, different mechanisms of electron transfer between Ni-TiO2 and NiO-TiO2 occurred. The application of nickel foam greatly enhanced the separation of free carriers in TiO2. As a consequence, high yields from the photocatalytic reactions were obtained.

Surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of metal-organic framework nanocomposites

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites have recently gained intensive attention for biosensing and disease therapy applications owing to their outstanding physiochemical properties. However, the direct growth of MOF nanocomposites is usually hindered by the mismatched lattice in the interface between the MOF and other nanocomponents. Surface ligands, molecules with surfactant-like properties, are demonstrated to exhibit the robust capability to modify the interfacial properties of nanomaterials and can be utilized as a powerful strategy for the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites. Besides this, surface ligands also exhibit significant functions in the morphological control and functionalization of MOF nanocomposites, thus greatly enhancing their performance in biomedical applications. In this review, the surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of MOF nanocomposites are comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites is discussed according to the diverse roles of surface ligands. Then, MOF nanocomposites with different properties are listed with their applications in biosensing and disease therapy. Finally, current challenges and further directions of MOF nanocomposites are presented to motivate the development of MOF nanocomposites with elaborate structures, enriched functions, and excellent application prospects.

Polarization-dependent plasmonic heating in epitaxially grown multilayered metal-organic framework thin films embedded with Ag nanoparticles

The development of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films with various functionalities has paved the way for research into a wide variety of applications. MOF-oriented thin films can exhibit anisotropic functionality in the not only out-of-plane but also in-plane directions, making it possible to utilize MOF thin films for more sophisticated applications. However, the functionality of oriented MOF thin films has not been fully exploited, and finding novel anisotropic functionality in oriented MOF thin films should be cultivated. In the present study, we report the first demonstration of polarization-dependent plasmonic heating in a MOF oriented film embedded with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), pioneering an anisotropic optical functionality in MOF thin films. Spherical AgNPs exhibit polarization-dependent plasmon-resonance absorption (anisotropic plasmon damping) when incorporated into an anisotropic lattice of MOFs. The anisotropic plasmon resonance results in a polarization-dependent plasmonic heating behavior; the highest elevated temperature was observed in case the polarization of incident light is parallel to the crystallographic axis of the host MOF lattice favorable for the larger plasmon resonance, resulting in polarization-controlled temperature regulation. Such spatially and polarization selective plasmonic heating offered by the use of oriented MOF thin films as a host can pave the way for applications such as efficient reactivation in MOF thin film sensors, partial catalytic reactions in MOF thin film devices, and soft microrobotics in composites with thermo-responsive materials.

Direct generation of polypyrrole-coated palladium nanoparticles inside a metal-organic framework for a semihydrogenation catalyst

Herein, the direct synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy)-coated palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) inside a metal-organic framework (MIL-101) was successfully demonstrated. Owing to the PPy coating of PdNPs, the resulting composites exhibited higher semihydrogenation capability (selectivity: up to 96%) than the analog composite without PPy coating.

Plasmon Driven Nanocrystal Transformation by Aluminum Nano-Islands with an Alumina Layer

The plasmonic photothermal effects of metal nanostructures have recently become a new priority of studies in the field of nano-optics. Controllable plasmonic nanostructures with a wide range of responses are crucial for effective photothermal effects and their applications. In this work, self-assembled aluminum nano-islands (Al NIs) with a thin alumina layer are designed as a plasmonic photothermal structure to achieve nanocrystal transformation via multi-wavelength excitation. The plasmonic photothermal effects can be controlled by the thickness of the Al₂O₃ and the intensity and wavelength of the laser illumination. In addition, Al NIs with an alumina layer have good photothermal conversion efficiency even in low temperature environments, and the efficiency will not decline significantly after storage in air for 3 months. Such an inexpensive Al/Al₂O₃ structure with a multi-wavelength response provides an efficient platform for rapid nanocrystal transformation and a potential application for the wide-band absorption of solar energy.

Acceleration of the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes over an N-doped porous carbon sphere-confined ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst

Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to obtain alkenes is a key reaction in petrochemical and fine chemical industries. However, the development of stable and highly selective catalysts with uniformly dispersed active sites is still immensely challenging for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In this study, N-doped porous carbon nanospheres (NPCNs) were synthesized by the nanoemulsion self-assembly and subsequently carbonization method. Ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on NPCNs. The obtained PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited an open framework and abundant active sites originating from ultrafine PdCu NPs. In the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, the PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited a remarkable performance and stability, outperforming most of the classical catalysts. The excellent performance was related to the introduction of a secondary metal Cu, which can regulate the electronic state of Pd active sites to further enhance the hydrogenation activity and selectivity. Hence, the facile approach reported herein may be useful for constructing highly dispersed bimetallic NP-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes in the petrochemical industry.

Functionalized reactive polymers for the removal of chemical warfare agents: A review

Protection from and removal of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) from the environment remains a global goal. Activated charcoal, metal oxides, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), polyoxometalates (POMs) and reactive polymers have all been investigated for CWA removal. Composite polymeric materials are rapidly gaining traction as versatile building blocks for personal protective equipment (PPE) and catalytic devices. Polymers are inexpensive to produce and easily engineered into a wide range of materials including films, electro-spun fibers, mixed-matrix membranes/reactors, and other forms. When containing reactive side-chains, hydrolysis catalysts, and/or oxidative catalysts polymeric devices are primed for CWA decontamination. In this review, recent advances in reactive polymeric materials for CWA removal are summarized. To aid in comparing the effectiveness of the different solid catalysts, particular attention is paid to the stoichiometric ratio of reactive species to toxic substrate (CWA or CWA simulant).

A Visible Light-Induced and ROS-Dependent Method for the Rapid Formation of a MOF Composite Membrane with Antibacterial Properties

The diverse application potential of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are currently limited by their challenging and complicated preparation processes. In this study, we successfully developed a novel strategy for the rapid synthesis of a sustainable MOF composite membrane under neutral conditions with improved physicochemical and antibacterial properties. Our reaction pipeline comprised visible light that induced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from ZIF-8 particles, which facilitated the rapid oxidative polymerization of dopamine to polydopamine. The physicochemical properties of the composite membrane were assessed using imaging methods, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption; its antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were measured using optical densitometry. The bactericidal potency of the synthesized membrane was >99% against all tested strains under the conditions of simulated sunlight. Moreover, the composite membrane retained its structural integrity and antibacterial effect after multiple cycles of use and recovery, showcasing remarkable stability. Overall, this study displays a ROS-mediated method for the rapid preparation of sustainable MOF composite membranes under neutral conditions with optimal physicochemical characteristics, antibacterial properties, and performance. Our study provides insights into the use of membrane materials as design platforms for a range of diverse practical applications.

Zero Energy Heating of Solvent with Network-Structured Solar-Thermal Material: Eco-Friendly Palladium Catalysis of the Suzuki Reaction

Solar-thermal materials absorb sunlight and convert it into heat, which is released into the surrounding medium. Utilization of solar energy for solvent heating can be a potential method of eco-friendly organic reactions. However, to date, significant heating of the entire volume of a solvent by 1 sun illumination has not been reported. In the present work, a network structure of solar-thermal materials has been proposed for zero energy heating of a solvent under 1 sun illumination. A network-structured solar-thermal material with an additional catalytic function was fabricated by sputtering palladium into a melamine sponge. The nanocrystalline palladium-decorated melamine sponge (Pd-sponge) has excellent sunlight absorption properties in the entire wavelength range that enable efficient solar-thermal conversion. The Pd-sponge can reduce heat loss to the surroundings by effectively blocking thermal radiation from the heated solvent. The temperature of the reaction solution with the ethanol-water mixture filled in the Pd-sponge increased from 23 to 59 °C under 1 sun illumination. The elevated temperature of the reaction solutions by solar-thermal conversion successfully accelerated the heterogeneous Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reactions with high conversions. Easy and low-energy-consuming multicycle use of the solar-thermal and catalytic properties of the Pd-sponge has also been demonstrated.

Light-Induced Selective Hydrogenation over PdAg Nanocages in Hollow MOF Microenvironment

Selective hydrogenation with high efficiency under ambient conditions remains a long-standing challenge. Here, a yolk-shell nanostructured catalyst, PdAg@ZIF-8, featuring plasmonic PdAg nanocages encompassed by a metal-organic framework (MOF, namely, ZIF-8) shell, has been rationally fabricated. PdAg@ZIF-8 achieves selective (97.5%) hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to vinylaniline with complete conversion at ambient temperature under visible light irradiation. The photothermal effect of Ag, together with the substrate enrichment effect of the catalyst, improves the Pd activity. The near-field enhancement effect from plasmonic Ag and optimized Pd electronic state by Ag alloying promote selective adsorption of the -NO₂ group and therefore catalytic selectivity. Remarkably, the unique yolk-shell nanostructure not only facilitates access to PdAg cores and protects them from aggregation but also benefits substrate enrichment and preferential -NO₂ adsorption under light irradiation, the latter two of which surpass the core-shell counterpart, giving rise to enhanced activity, selectivity, and recyclability.

Combination of Plasmon-Mediated Photochemistry and Seed-Mediated Methods for Synthesis of Bicomponent Nanocrystals

Plasmon resonances of metal nanocrystals resulted from free electrons oscillating around nanocrystals, leading to a strong electromagnetic field around them. Because these oscillating electrons possess higher energy than the original ones, also known as hot electrons, these were widely used as photocatalysts for various reactions. Also, the strength and distribution of the electromagnetic field around the nanocrystals strongly depended on their morphology and excited irradiation, which led to the reaction environment around nanocrystals being controllable. Here, we integrated the seed-mediated and plasmon-mediated photochemistry methods for fabricating bimetallic and semiconductor-metal nanocrystals with controllable morphologies and compositions of the nanocrystals, resulting from the highly anisotropic reaction environment around the nanocrystals. The highly anisotropic reaction environment around the template nanocrystal was caused by the distribution of electromagnetic fields around it and its exposure area in the reaction solution. This new synthesis method should enable the fabrication of various multicomponent nanocrystals with desirable functions for potential applications, such as photocatalysts, chemical sensors, biosensors, biomedicines, etc.

Palladium decoration directed synthesis of ZIF-8 nanocubes with efficient catalytic activity for nitrobenzene hydrogenation

A palladium precursor (H₂PdCl₄) has been utilized as a novel structure-directing agent for controlling the morphology of ZIF-8. Using reverse micelles as nanoreactors, the Pd/ZIF-8 nanocomposite with a uniform size distribution is obtained. It is revealed that Pd(II) can selectively coordinate with the (100) plane of ZIF-8. As a result, the morphology of ZIF-8 is transformed from rhombic dodecahedral to cubic. After hydrogen treatment, the as-obtained Pd NPs/ZIF-8 nanocubes show efficient catalytic activity for nitrobenzene hydrogenation, which is higher than that of the commercially available Pd/C catalyst.

Solar Energy Catalysis

When it comes to using solar energy to promote catalytic reactions, photocatalysis technology is the first choice. However, sunlight can not only be directly converted into chemical energy through a photocatalytic process, it can also be converted through different energy-transfer pathways. Using sunlight as the energy source, photocatalytic reactions can proceed independently, and can also be coupled with other catalytic technologies to enhance the overall catalytic efficiency. Therefore, sunlight-driven catalytic reactions are diverse, and need to be given a specific definition. We propose a timely perspective for catalytic reactions driven by sunlight and give them a specific definition, namely "solar energy catalysis". The concept of different types of solar energy catalysis, such as photocatalysis, photothermal catalysis, solar cell powered electrocatalysis, and pyroelectric catalysis, are highlighted. Finally, their limitations and future research directions are discussed.

Photothermal-Driven High-Performance Selective Hydrogenation System Enabled by Delicately Designed IrCo Nanocages

The incorporation of a transition metal into a noble metal for the formation of nanoalloys paves a potential way to modulate the electronic structures and spatial arrangement modes, thereby manipulating the target catalysis under the desired reaction pathways. Herein, a top-down synthetic route to fabricate IrCo nanoalloys with delicately designed compositions and morphologies at an extremely low calcination temperature of 200 °C is reported, which efficiently breaks through the thermodynamic limitations caused by the large atomic radii and electronegativity discrepancies between Co and Ir. A high-performance selective hydrogenation system enabled by the synthesized IrCo nanoalloys and the light irradiation is further established. Significantly, the unique properties of IrCo alloy, involving the special capability of generating local heating rather than hot electrons under light irradiation (the hot-electron effect was considered detrimental to hydrogenation reactions), as well as the highly polarized surface which aids in the hydrogen transfer from borane-ammonia complex (AB) to 4-nitrostyrene (4-NS) are discovered.

Construction and application of base-stable MOFs: a critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of porous crystalline materials constructed from organic ligands and metal ions/clusters. Owing to their unique advantages, they have attracted more and more attention in recent years and numerous studies have revealed their great potential in various applications. Many important applications of MOFs inevitably involve harsh alkaline operational environments. To achieve high performance and long cycling life in these applications, high stability of MOFs against bases is necessary. Therefore, the construction of base-stable MOFs has become a critical research direction in the MOF field. This review gives a historic summary of the development of base-stable MOFs in the last few years. The key factors that can determine the robustness of MOFs under basic conditions are analyzed. We also demonstrate the exciting achievements that have been made by utilizing base-stable MOFs in different applications. In the end, we discuss major challenges for the further development of base-stable MOFs. Some possible methods to address these problems are presented.

RuCo Alloy Nanoparticles Embedded into N-Doped Carbon for High Efficiency Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst

For large-scale and sustainable water electrolysis, it is of great significance to develop cheap and efficient electrocatalysts that can replace platinum. Currently, it is difficult for most catalysts to combine high activity and stability. To solve this problem, we use cobalt to regulate the electronic structure of ruthenium to achieve high activity, and use carbon matrix to protect alloy nanoparticles to achieve high stability. Herein, based on the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a novel hybrid composed of RuCo alloy nano-particles and N-doped carbon was prepared via a facile pyrolysis-displacement-sintering strategy. Due to the unique porous structure and multi-component synergy, the optimal RuCo500@NC750 material in both acidic and alkaline media exhibited eminent HER catalytic activity. Notably, the 3-RuCo500@NC750 obtained a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 22 mV and 31 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively, comparable to that of the reference Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, the Tafel slopes of the catalyst are 52 mV Dec−1 and 47 mV Dec−1, respectively, under acid and alkali conditions, and the catalyst has good stability, indicating that it has broad application prospects in practical electrolytic systems. This work contributes to understanding the role of carbon-supported polymetallic alloy in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution process, and provides some inspiration for the development of a high efficiency hydrogen evolution catalyst.

Hollow ZSM-5 zeolite encapsulating Pt nanoparticles: Cage-confinement effects for the enhanced catalytic oxidation of benzene

A zeolitic cage was introduced and rationally fabricated by encapsulating Pt nanoparticles (NPs) in hollow ZSM-5, a nanomaterial with a cavity and porous shell, for efficient catalytic oxidation of benzene. The structure and formation of the zeolitic cage were systematically investigated and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption investigations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The obtained hollow 0.2 Pt@ZSM-5 exhibited a comparable low-temperature catalytic activity with 0.5Pt/ZSM-5 with T₉₀ value of 178 °C. Various characterization techniques combined with adsorption experiments uncover the tremendous role of the zeolitic cage in the catalytic activity toward benzene oxidation. The porous shell prevented benzene dilution and the acidity originating from the hollow interior of ZSM-5 promoted the storage of benzene, thereby forming a high local concentration of benzene around Pt NPs, resulting in excellent catalytic performance. These findings provide valuable insights into the rational design of efficient catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds.

A Tetrathiafulvalene/Naphthalene Diimide-Containing Metal-Organic Framework with fsc Topology for Highly Efficient Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide broad prospects for the development of new photothermal conversion materials, while their design and synthesis remain challenging. A new Zn-MOF (1) containing both tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) as an electron donor and naphthalene diimide (NDI) as an electron acceptor was constructed by using a space limiting effect. The material exhibited wide absorption peaks in the near-infrared region, indicating that there was strong charge transfer interaction between the TTF and NDI units and providing the possibility of photothermal conversion. 1 shows efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion performance. Under 808 nm laser (0.4 W cm^-2) illumination, the temperature of 1 increased rapidly from room temperature to 250 °C, with good thermal stability and cycle durability. This work provides an efficient strategy for promising materials in photothermal therapy.

Near-Infrared Photothermal Catalysis for Enhanced Conversion of Carbon Dioxide under Mild Conditions

Enhanced conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) for cycloaddition with epoxide derivatives is highly desired in organic synthesis and green chemistry, yet it is still a challenge to obtain satisfactory activity under mild reaction conditions of temperature and pressure. For this purpose, an unexploited strategy is proposed here by incorporating near-infrared (NIR) photothermal properties into multicomponent catalysts. Through the electrostatic adsorption of Co- or Ce-substituted polyoxometalate (POM) clusters on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) with covalently grafted polyethyleneimine (PEI), a series of composite catalysts POMs@GO-PEI are prepared. The structural and property characterizations demonstrate the synergistic advantages of the catalysts bearing Lewis acids and bases and local NIR photothermal heating from the GO matrix for dramatically enhanced CO₂ cycloaddition. Noticeably, while the turnover frequency increases up to 2718 h^-1, the heterogeneous catalysts exhibit photothermal stability and recyclability. With this method, the onsite NIR photothermal transformation becomes extendable to more green reaction processes.

Pillar[5]arene-Integrated Three-Dimensional Framework Polymers for Macrocycle-Induced Size-Selective Catalysis

Size-selective catalysis is of key importance in the conversion of crude oil or biomass. Here, we fabricate three pillar[5]arene-integrated porous organic polymers with three-dimensional (3D) network structures using 3D cross-linkers. The resulting polymers possess a high surface-to-mass ratio and exhibit exceptional size-selective catalysis in Knoevenagel condensation reactions. In addition, a mechanistic study indicates that the size-selective catalysis is due to the host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene and substrates. This study suggests that macrocycle-containing polymers could be a promising candidate for size-selective catalysis.

Enhancing the photothermal conversion of tetrathiafulvalene-based MOFs by redox doping and plasmon resonance

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal materials hold great promise for use in several applications, particularly in photothermal therapy, diagnosis, and imaging. However, current NIR responsive materials often show narrow absorption bands and low absorption efficiency, and have long response times. Herein, we demonstrate that the NIR absorption of tetrathiafulvalene-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by redox doping and using plasmonic nanoparticles. In this work, a MOF containing redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units and Dy-carboxylate chains was constructed, Dy-m-TTFTB. The NIR absorption of the as-synthesized Dy-m-TTFTB was further enhanced by Ag⁺ or I₂ oxidation, transforming the neutral TTF into a TTF˙⁺ radical state. Interestingly, treatment with Ag⁺ not only generated TTF˙⁺ radicals, but it also formed Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in situ within the MOF pores. With both TTF˙⁺ radicals and Ag NPs, Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB was shown to exhibit a wide range of absorption wavelengths (200–1000 nm) and also a high NIR photothermal conversion. When the system was irradiated with an 808 nm laser (energy power of 0.7 W cm⁻²), Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB showed a sharp temperature increase of 239.8 °C. This increase was higher than that of pristine Dy-m-TTFTB (90.1 °C) or I₂ treated I₃⁻@Dy-m-TTFTB (213.0 °C).

The photo-response of the redox-active metal–organic framework has been systematically tuned by incorporating plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and tetrathiafulvalene radicals, resulting in efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion materials.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Hydrogen-Release Platform for Multieffective Helicobacter Pylori Targeting Therapy and Intestinal Flora Protective Capabilities

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the leading cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. Antibiotics, as traditional method for eliminating H. pylori, have no targeting effect, which causes serious bacterial resistance and gut dysbacteriosis. Moreover, antibiotics can hardly address hyperactive inflammatory response or damaged gastric mucosal barrier caused by H. pylori infection. Here, a pH-responsive metal-organic framework hydrogen-generation nanoparticle (Pd(H) @ ZIF-8) is reported, which is encapsulated with ascorbate palmitate (AP) hydrogel. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that the outer AP hydrogel can target and adhere to the inflammatory site through electrostatic interactions, and is then hydrolyzed by matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enriching in inflammatory sites. The released Pd(H) @ ZIF-8 nanoparticles are further decomposed by gastric acid to generate zinc ions (Zn²⁺ ) and hydrogen, thus effectively killing H. pylori, alleviating inflammation and restoring impaired gastric mucosa simultaneously. Unexpectedly, this metal-organic framework hydrogen-generation platform (Pd(H) @ ZIF-8 @ AP) also has an effect toward avoiding the imbalance of intestinal flora, which thus provides a more precise, effective, and healthy strategy for the treatment of H. pylori infection.

State-of-the-Art Advancements in Photocatalytic Hydrogenation: Reaction Mechanism and Recent Progress in Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Catalysts

Photocatalytic hydrogenation provides an effective alternative way for the synthesis of industrial chemicals to meet the economic and environment expectations. Especially, over the past few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featured with tunable structure, porosity, and crystallinity, have been significantly developed as many high-performance catalysts in the field of photocatalysis. In this review, the background and development of photocatalytic hydrogenation are systemically summarized. In particular, the comparison between photocatalysis and thermal catalysis, and the fundamental understanding of photohydrogenation, including reaction pathways, reducing species, regulation of selectivity, and critical parameters of light, are proposed. Moreover, this review highlights the advantages of MOFs-based photocatalysts in the area of photohydrogenation. Typical effective strategies for modifying MOFs-based composites to produce their advantages are concluded. The recent progress in the application of various types of MOFs-based photocatalysts for photohydrogenation of unsaturated organic chemicals and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, a brief conclusion and personal perspective on current challenges and future developments of photocatalytic hydrogenation processes and MOFs-based photocatalysts are also highlighted.

A novel metal–organic framework of Ba–hemin with enhanced cascade activity for sensitive glucose detection

Early glucose detection is important in both healthy people and diabetic patients. Glucose biosensing based on glucose oxidase (GOX) is a common method. However, native proteins are mostly membrane impermeable and are prone to degradation in complex sample environments. Herein, we report a facile one-step biomineralization method by simply mixing aqueous solutions of hemin and barium nitrate with glucose oxidase (GOX) to form Ba–hemin@GOX composites. Glucose (Glu) is introduced through self-driven sampling to trigger the GOX-catalysed production of hydrogen peroxide, which could help the subsequent 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation reaction catalysed by Ba–hemin to yield the blue-coloured product. The sensor exhibited a detection limit as low as 3.08 μM. The operability and accuracy of the Ba–hemin@GOX biosensor were confirmed by the quantitative determination of glucose in real samples, such as tap water, serum and drinks. Moreover, the Ba–hemin@GOX-based colorimetric biosensor showed good selectivity, storage stability and recoverability. The experimental results reveal that a GOX activity of more than 90% was still maintained even after being incubated at 60 °C for 30 minutes, and Ba–hemin@GOX could be reused for glucose detection at least six times. Even after 30 days of storage, the relative activity was still more than 90%. Overall, the developed Ba–hemin@GOX biosensor provides a valuable and general platform for applications in colorimetric biosensing and medical diagnostics.

Thermo-enhanced photocatalytic oxidation of amines to imines over MIL-125-NH2@Ag@COF hybrids under visible light

Thermo-enhanced photocatalysis combines the advantages of thermocatalysis and photocatalysis and provides a very promising approach for the selective oxidation of organic compounds to value-added chemicals. In this work, the amino group in MIL-125-NH₂ first reacts with formaldehyde to form the reducing group (-NH-CH₂OH), which can in situ auto reduce the introduced Ag⁺ ions to Ag clusters/nanoparticles in the cavities. Then the formed MIL-125-NH-CH₂OH@Ag was further coated with a covalent organic framework (COF) through imine bonds to form a series of MIL-125-NH-CH₂OH@Ag@COF hybrids. Oxidative coupling of amines was selected to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of these materials under visible light at set temperatures (20-60 °C). With an optimized composition, MIL-125-NH-CH₂OH@Ag-0.5@COF-2 not only improves the optical properties, but also exhibits the highest conversion (almost 100%) of benzylamine under visible light at 60 °C and good stability for at least three cycles. Free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance detection demonstrated that holes (h⁺), hydroxyl (˙OH) and superoxide radicals (O₂˙^-) were the active species. The results prove that the MIL-125-NH-CH₂OH@Ag@COF hybrid possessed higher photocatalytic performance than individual MIL-125-NH₂, Ag and COF on account of the efficient separation and transfer of photoinduced electrons and holes. Moreover, the promotion of the reaction temperature on the photocatalytic oxidation of amines has been reported, revealing that the conversion of benzylamine over MIL-125-NH-CH₂OH@Ag-0.5@COF-2 at 60 °C is nearly twice as high as that at 20 °C under visible light irradiation. Therefore, the thermo-enhanced photocatalytic oxidation performance of the MOF@Ag@COF hybrid demonstrates the great potential of thermal energy for further improving the photocatalytic selective oxidation performance.

Selective Deposition of Catalytic Metals on Plasmonic Au Nanocups for Room-Light-Active Photooxidation of o-Phenylenediamine

Plasmonic hotspots can enhance hot charge carrier generation, offering new opportunities for improving the photocatalytic activity. In this work, eight types of heteronanostructures are synthesized by selectively depositing catalytic metals at the different sites of highly asymmetric Au nanocups for the photocatalytic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine. The oxidation of this molecule has so far mainly relied on the use of H2O2 as an oxidizing agent in the presence of an appropriate catalyst. The photocatalytic oxidation under visible light has not been reported before. The Au nanocups with AgPt nanoparticles grown at the opening edge and bottom exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. The generated hot electrons and holes both participate in the reaction. The hot carriers from the interband and intraband transitions are both utilized. The optimal catalyst shows a favorable activity even under room light. Simulations reveal that the profound electric field enhancement at the hotspots boosts the hot-carrier density in the catalytic nanoparticles, explaining the overwhelming photocatalytic activity of the optimal catalyst.
