Designed Assembly of Heterometallic Cluster Organic Frameworks Based on Anderson-Type Polyoxometalate Clusters

Two nickel-added poly(polyoxometalate)s built of Keggin-type {Ni6PW9} and Anderson-type NiW6O24via WO4/Sb2O bridges and Ni-O-W linkages with efficient hydrogen evolution activity

Two Ni-added poly(polyoxometalate)s built of Keggin-type {Ni6PW9} and Anderson-type NiW6O24 units via WO4/Sb2O bridges and Ni-O-W linkages, Na4H8[Ni(enMe)2][(Sb2O)2(NiW6O24)-{Ni12O2(OH)4(enMe)4(H2O)3(WO4)2(B-α-PW9O34)2}2]·39H2O (1) and H9[Ni(en)2(H2O)][Ni0.5(en)2(H2O)][Ni-(enMe)2(H2O)][(Sb2O)2(NiW6O24){Ni12O2(OH)4(en)2(enMe)2(H2O)3(WO4)2}-{Ni12O2(OH)4(en)4(H2O)3(WO4)2}(B-α-PW9O34)4]·45H2O (2), have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized, in which the {Ni12(WO4)2(PW9)2} subunit was obtained by the synergistic directing effect of 2 lacunary PW9O34 (PW9) fragments and further linked by a central Anderson-type (Sb2O)2(NiW6O24) bridge. Both compounds represent the first example of Ni-added polyoxometalates (POMs) simultaneously based on Keggin-type and Anderson-type POM components. Photocatalytic studies revealed that 2 can work as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst towards a light-driven H2 evolution reaction, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of as high as 19 214 μmol g-1 h-1 (TON = 1500), which is superior to most of the reported POM-based heterogeneous catalysts.

Staggered Assembly of a Dimeric Au13 Cluster: Impacts on Coupling of Geometric Isomerism

The specific states of aggregation of metal atoms in sub-nanometer-sized gold clusters are related to the different quantum confinement volumes of electrons, leading to novel optical and electronic properties. These volumes can be tuned by changing the relative positions of the gold atoms to generate isomers. Studying the isomeric gold core and the electron coupling between the basic units is fundamentally important for nanoelectronic devices and luminescence; however, appropriate cases are lacking. In this study, the structure of the first staggered di-superatomic Au25 -S was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of Au25 -S were studied by comparing with eclipsed Au25 -E. From Au25 -E to Au25 -S, changes in the electronic structures occurred, resulting in significantly different optical absorptions originating from the coupling between the two Au13 modules. Au25 -S shows a longer electron decay lifetime of 307.7 ps before populating the lowest triplet emissive state, compared to 1.29 ps for Au25 -E. The experimental and theoretical results show that variations in the geometric isomerism lead to distinct photophysical processes owing to isomerism-dependent electronic coupling. This study offers new insights into the connection between the geometric isomerism of nanosized building blocks and the optical properties of their assemblies, opening new possibilities for constructing function-specific nanomaterials.

Laser-Induced Preparation of Anderson-Type Polyoxometalate-Derived Sulfide/Oxide Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Developing cost-effective and high-active electrocatalysts is vital to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional pyrolysis methods require complicated procedures, exact temperatures, and long reaction times, leading to high costs and low yields of electrocatalysts in potential industrial applications. Herein, a rapid and economic laser-induced preparation strategy is proposed to synthesize three bimetallic sulfide/oxide composites (MMoOS, M=Fe, Co, and Ni) on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. A focused CO2 laser with high energy is applied to decompose Anderson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based precursors, enabling the creation of abundant heteropore and defective structures in the MMoOS composites that have multi-components of MS/Mo4O11/MoS2. Remarkably, owing to the structural interactions between the active species, FeMoOS shows superior electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium, exhibiting a low overpotential of 240 mV at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec-1, and good durability for 80 h. Physical characterizations after OER imply that partially dissolved Mo-based species and new-formed NiO/NiOOH can effectively uncover abundant active sites, fasten charge transfer, and modify defective structures. This work provides a rapid laser-induced irradiation method for the synthesis of POM-derived nanocomposites as promoted electrocatalysts.

Co(II)-doped hybrid Zn(II) tetraborate complexes, [ZnxCo(1-x)(1,3-dap)B4O7] (1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane): BET analysis and N2/H2O/D2O adsorption studies

A series of mono/bimetallic isostructural hybrid tetraborates of the general formula [ZnxCo(1-x)(1,3-dap)B4O7] has been prepared using a solvothermal method. Their adsorption/desorption curves for H2O and D2O demonstrate that these materials have a stronger affinity for H2O than for D2O and enrich the D2O content of D2O/H2O mixtures.

Hydrogenation Catalysis by Hydrogen Spillover on Platinum-Functionalized Heterogeneous Boronic Acid-Polyoxometalates

The activation of molecular hydrogen is a key process in catalysis. Here, we demonstrate how polyoxometalate (POM)-based heterogeneous compounds functionalized with Platinum particles activate H2 by synergism between a hydrogen spillover mechanism and electron-proton transfer by the POM. This interplay facilitates the selective catalytic reduction of olefins and nitroarenes with high functional group tolerance. A family of polyoxotungstates covalently functionalized with boronic acids is reported. In the solid-state, the compounds are held together by non-covalent interactions (π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding). The resulting heterogeneous nanoscale particles form stable colloidal dispersions in acetonitrile and can be surface-functionalized with platinum nanoparticles by in situ photoreduction. The resulting materials show excellent catalytic activity in hydrogenation of olefins and nitrobenzene derivatives under mild conditions (1 bar H2 and room temperature).

A porous Anderson-type polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework as a multifunctional platform for selective oxidative coupling with amines

Incorporating catalytic units into a crystalline porous matrix represents a facile way to build high-efficiency heterogeneous catalysts, and by rational design of the porous skeleton with appropriate building blocks the catalytic performance can be significantly enhanced for a series of organic transformations owing to the synergistic effect from the multicomponent and confined porous microenvironment around catalytically active sites. Herein, we demonstrate that the design and synthesis of a porous polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework YL2(H2O)2[CrMo6O18(PET)2]·4H2O (POMOF-1) constructed from Anderson-type [CrMo6O18(PET)2] (PET = pentaerythritol), which can be employed as a multifunctional platform for synthesis of N-containing compounds via selective oxidative coupling with amines. POMOF-1 features microporous 1D channels defined by Y3+ and L, with [CrMo6O18(PET)2] arranged orderly between adjacent Lvia electrostatic interactions. Upon using POMOF-1 as a catalyst and H2O2 as an oxidant, a variety of amines could be effectively converted to value-added amides, imines and azobenzenes via the oxidative cross-coupling with alcohols or homo-coupling. In particular, POMOF-1 showed dramatically improved activity for the N-formylation reaction owing to the synergistic and confinement effect, with the yield of amides up to 95% and 4 times higher than that of homogeneous [CrMo6O18(PET)2]. Meanwhile, the oxidative homo-coupling of arylmethylamines and arylamines can be facilely tuned by adjustment of the amount of oxidant, solvent and additive, affording imines and azobenzenes in high selectivity and yield, respectively. POMOF-1 is robust and can be reused for 5 cycles with little loss of catalytic activity and structural integrity. The work demonstrates that the combination of catalytically active POMs with crystalline porous MOFs holds great potential to build robust and recyclable heterogeneous systems with enhanced activity and selectivity for multifunctional catalysis.

Effective Enrichment of Phosphopeptides Using Magnetic Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

In this study, magnetic polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4-POMOFs) were designed and applied to the enrichment of phosphopeptides. Thanks to the abundant metal oxide and metal ion sites, the material had a strong affinity for phosphopeptides. Simultaneously, the high amount of amino and guanidyl groups provided hydrophilicity and positive charge for phosphopeptide capture. By coupling with MS detection, the established platform possessed good reusability, high sensitivity (0.01 fmol), and high selectivity (α-casein/β-casein/bovine serum albumin = 1:1:5000). Furthermore, the method was successfully used for the detection of phosphopeptides in nonfat milk, human serum, saliva, and A549 cell lysate, showing great potential for practical application.

Rational synthesis of elusive organic-inorganic hybrid metal-oxo clusters: formation and post-functionalization of hexavanadates

Paving the way towards new functional materials relies increasingly on the challenging task of forming organic-inorganic hybrid compounds. In that regard, discrete atomically-precise metal-oxo nanoclusters have received increasing attention due to the wide range of organic moieties that can be grafted onto them through functionalization reactions. The Lindqvist hexavanadate family of clusters, such as [V₆O₁₃{(OCH₂)₃C-R}₂]^2- (V₆-R), is particularly interesting due to the magnetic, redox, and catalytic properties of these clusters. However, compared to other metal-oxo cluster types, V₆-R clusters have been less extensively explored, which is mainly due to poorly understood synthetic challenges and the limited number of viable post-functionalization strategies. In this work, we present an in-depth investigation of the factors that influence the formation of hybrid hexavanadates (V₆-R HPOMs) and leverage this knowledge to develop [V₆O₁₃{(OCH₂)₃CNHCOCH₂Cl}₂]^2- (V₆-Cl) as a new and tunable platform for the facile formation of discrete hybrid structures based on metal-oxo clusters in relatively high yields. Moreover, we showcase the versatility of the V₆-Cl platform through its post-functionalization via nucleophilic substitution with various carboxylic acids of differing complexity and with functionalities that are relevant in multiple disciplines, such as supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry. Hence, V₆-Cl was shown to be a straightforward and versatile starting point for the formation of functional supramolecular structures or other hybrid materials, thereby enabling their exploration in various fields.

Recent Advances in Application of Polyoxometalates in Lignocellulose Pretreatment and Transformation

Lignocellulose, composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, holds immense promise as a renewable resource for the production of sustainable chemicals and fuels. Unlocking the full potential of lignocellulose requires efficient pretreatment strategies. In this comprehensive review, efforts were taken to survey the latest developments in polyoxometalates (POMs)-assisted pretreatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. An outstanding finding highlighted in this review is that the deformation of the cellulose structure from I to II accompanied by the removal of xylan/lignin through the synergistic effect of ionic liquids (ILs) and POMs resulted in a significant increase in glucose yield and improved cellulose digestibility. Furthermore, successful integration of POMs with deep eutectic solvents (DES) or γ-valerolactone/water (GVL/water) systems has demonstrated efficient lignin removal, opening avenues for advanced biomass utilization. This review not only presents the key findings and novel approaches in POMs-based pretreatment but also addresses the current challenges and prospects for large-scale industrial implementation. By offering a comprehensive assessment of the progress in this field, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals aiming to harness the potential of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable chemical and fuel production.

Discrete Arsonate-Grafted Inverted-Keggin 12-Molybdate Ion [Mo12O32(OH)2(4-N3C2H2-C6H4AsO3)4]2- and Formation of a Copper(II)-Mediated Metal-Organic Framework

The discrete inverted-Keggin ion [Mo₁₂O₃₂(OH)₂(4-N₃C₂H₂-C₆H₄AsO₃)₄]^2- (1) has been prepared in an aqueous acidic (pH 0.8) medium by the reaction of MoO₃ with the (4-triazolylphenyl)arsonic acid 4-N₃C₂H₂-C₆H₄AsO₃H₂ under hydrothermal conditions and was isolated as a sodium salt in 21% yield. The exact same reaction in the presence of Cu²⁺ ions resulted in the neutral metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu₂[Mo₁₂O₃₄(4-N₃C₂H₂-C₆H₄AsO₃)₄] (Cu-1) in 68% yield. The inverted-Keggin ion 1 comprises a metal-oxo core, which is capped by four organoarsonate groups, and in Cu-1, individual polyanions are linked in the solid state by coordination of the Cu²⁺ ions with the triazolyl groups. The discrete ion 1 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy, as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the POM-MOF Cu-1 was characterized by single-crystal and powder XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and gas sorption. Cu-1 has channels with a diameter of around ∼0.9 nm and exhibits a water-vapor adsorption capacity of 89.7 cm³ g^-1 (p/p₀ = 0.95).

Heteroatom-Modulated Assembly of Hexalanthanoid-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Coordination Networks

Two series of lanthanoid (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) {[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)_24-n(ampH₂)_n(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·21H₂O (Ln = Tb, n = 0 (1), Ln = Er, n = 1 (2)) and K₂[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)₂₂(SiW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·23H₂O (Ln = Tb (3), Er (4)) (ampH₂ = (aminomethyl) phosphonic acid)} have been synthesized with tri-lacunary Keggin-type POMs containing different types of heteroatoms. Compounds 1 and 2 display neutral organic-inorganic hybrid POM molecules containing {Ln₆(ampH)₄} ({Ln₆}) cores sandwiched by two {PW₁₁O₃₉} units. By changing the heteroatoms from P^V to Si^IV, the extended 2D networks of 3 and 4 were successfully isolated where the adjacent {Ln₆} clusters were connected by {SiW₁₁O₃₉} moieties. Luminescence performances and magnetic properties of 1-4 have been systematically surveyed. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 display characteristic emissions of Ln components resulting from the 4f-4f transitions, and energy transfer from the POM segments to Ln³⁺ centers in 1 and 3 has been observed based on the lifetime decay behaviors. Furthermore, all compounds can be utilized as electrocatalysts toward reduction of nitrite with high stability.

Proton-Conductive Polyoxometalate Architectures Constructed from Lanthanide-Incorporated Polyoxoniobate Cages

Two new extended polyoxometalate (POM) architectures based on lanthanide-incorporated polyoxoniobate (Ln-incorporated PONb) cages, namely, H₄[Cu^II(en)₂]₄{K₄(H₂O)₂[Cu^II(en)₂]₅[Cu^II₅(trz)₂(en)₄(OH)₂][Dy₂Cu^II₂(en)₂(CO₃)₃(H₂O)₂(OH)₃][Dy(H₂O)₄][DyNb₂₃O₆₈(H₂O)₄]₂}·60H₂O (1, en = ethylenediamine) and H₂₀[Cu^II(en)₂]₄{[Cu^II(en)₂]₄[Dy₂(C₂O₄)(H₂O)₄]₂[(Nb₃₂(OH)₄(H₂O)₃O₈₉]₂}·54H₂O (2), have been successfully synthesized and structurally characterized, demonstrating a feasible strategy to develop functional POM materials. In addition, the proton conductivity and magnetic behaviors of both 1 and 2 were studied.

Lanthanide-Anderson Polyoxometalates Frameworks: Efficient Sulfide Photooxidation

Three polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by the thermal reaction of pyridyl-Anderson polyoxometalate linker and lanthanide ions. With the help of [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ photosensitizer, these frameworks exhibited excellent photocatalytic sulfide oxidation performance with sulfoxide selectivity. The reactive oxygen species as well as the photooxidation mechanism were also explored.

Designed Syntheses of Three {Ni6PW9}-Based Polyoxometalates, from Isolated Cluster to Cluster-Organic Helical Chain

Three new hexa-Ni-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs), [Ni6(OH)3- (DACH)3(H2O)6(PW9O34)]·31H2O (1), [Ni(DACH)2][Ni6(OH)3(DACH)3(HMIP)2(H2O)2(PW9O34)]·56 H2O (2), and [Ni(DACH)2][Ni6(OH)3(DACH)2(AP)(H2O)5(PW9O34)]·2H2O (3) (DACH = 1,2-Diami- nocyclohexane, MIP = 5-Methylisophthalate, AP = Adipate) were successfully made in the presence of DACH under hydrothermal conditions. 1 is an isolated hexa-Ni-substituted Keggin unit decorated by DACH. In order to further construct POM cluster-organic frameworks (POMCOFs) on the basis of 1, by analyzing the steric hindrances and orientations of the POM units, the rigid HMIP and flexible AP ligands were successively incorporated, and another anionic monomeric POM 2 and the new 1D POM cluster organic chain (POMCOC) 3 were obtained. HMIP ligand still acts as a decorating group on the Ni6 core of 2 but results in the different spatial arrangement of the {Ni6PW9} units. AP ligands in 3 successfully bridge adjacent isolated POM cluster units to 1D POMCOC with left-hand helices. The AP in 3 is the longest aliphatic carboxylic acid ligand in POMs, and the 1D POM cluster-AP helical chain represents the first 1D POMCOC with a helical feature.

Designed assembly of heterometallic zeolite-like framework materials from two different supertetrahedral metal clusters

This work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the synthesis of new zeolite-like framework materials. With the strategy of using two different supertetrahedral clusters as secondary building units, two new heterometallic zeolite-like frameworks with isomeric structures but tunable topologies were first made. Besides, the porous nature and the proton conduction performance of the new materials were further studied.

Chiral {Ni6PW9} Cluster-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties

A chiral three-dimensional polyoxometalate cluster-organic framework (POMCOF) H₃[(btc)Ni₆(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂O)₅(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)]·17H₂O (1, btc = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate) has been made under hydrothermal conditions in the absence of amine or chiral starting reagents. 1 shows high stability in CH₃CN/DMF (1:3), acidic, and basic solutions with the pH ranging from 2 to 12 for 5 days. The UV-vis reflectance spectra and Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that 1 could be a suitable catalyst for photocatalysis. Visible-light-driven H₂ evolution studies have demonstrated that 1 is an ecofriendly, efficient, and recyclable catalyst with a H₂ evolution rate of 1058.24 μmol h^-1g^-1. Nonlinear optical (NLO) measurement reveals that 1 exhibits a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response of about 1.4 times that of KH₂PO₄ (KDP), indicating that 1 is a potential NLO material as well.

Cations Modulated Assembly of Triol-Ligand Modified Cu-Centered Anderson-Evans Polyanions

Counter-cations are essential components of polyoxometalates (POMs), which have a distinct influence on the solubility, stabilization, self-assembly, and functionality of POMs. To investigate the roles of cations in the packing of POMs, as a systematic investigation, herein, a series of triol-ligand covalently modified Cu-centered Anderson-Evans POMs with different counter ions were prepared in an aqueous solution and characterized by various techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Using the strategy of controlling Mo sources, in the presence of triol ligand, NH₄⁺, Cu²⁺ and Na⁺ were introduced successfully into POMs. When (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄ was selected, the counter cations of the produced POMs were ammonium ions, which resulted in the existence of clusters in the discrete state. Additionally, with the modulation of the pH of the solutions, the modified sites of triol ligands on the cluster can be controlled to form δ- or χ-isomers. By applying MoO₃ in the same reaction, Cu²⁺ ions served as linkers to connect triol-ligand modified polyanions into chains. When Na₄Mo₈O₂₆ was employed as the Mo source to react with triol ligands in the presence of CuCl₂, two 2-D networks were obtained with {Na₄(H₂O)₁₄} or {{Na₂(H₂O)₄} sub-clusters as linkers, where the building blocks were δ/δ- and χ/χ-isomers, respectively. The present investigation reveals that the charges, sizes and coordination manners of the counter cations have an obvious influence on the assembled structure of polyanions.

Supramolecular assemblies of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates: from functional building blocks to hierarchical nanomaterials

This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the supramolecular organisation and hierarchical self-assembly of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates (hereafter referred to as hybrid POMs), and their emerging role as multi-functional building blocks in the construction of new nanomaterials. Polyoxometalates have long been studied as a fascinating outgrowth of traditional metal-oxide chemistry, where the unusual position they occupy between individual metal oxoanions and solid-state bulk oxides imbues them with a range of attractive properties (e.g. solubility, high structural modularity and tuneable properties/reactivity). Specifically, the capacity for POMs to be covalently coupled to an effectively limitless range of organic moieties has opened exciting new avenues in their rational design, while the combination of distinct organic and inorganic components facilitates the formation of complex molecular architectures and the emergence of new, unique functionalities. Here, we present a detailed discussion of the design opportunities afforded by hybrid POMs, where fine control over their size, topology and their covalent and non-covalent interactions with a range of other species and/or substrates makes them ideal building blocks in the assembly of a broad range of supramolecular hybrid nanomaterials. We review both direct self-assembly approaches (encompassing both solution and solid-state approaches) and the non-covalent interactions of hybrid POMs with a range of suitable substrates (including cavitands, carbon nanotubes and biological systems), while giving key consideration to the underlying driving forces in each case. Ultimately, this review aims to demonstrate the enormous potential that the rational assembly of hybrid POM clusters shows for the development of next-generation nanomaterials with applications in areas as diverse as catalysis, energy-storage and molecular biology, while providing our perspective on where the next major developments in the field may emerge.

Four Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Borates: From 2D Layers to 3D Oxoboron Cluster Organic Frameworks

Four inorganic-organic hybrid borates, K[B₆O₉(OH)(en)]·H₂O (1, en = ethylenediamine), K[B₆O₉(OH)(1,3-dap)]·H₂O (2, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), K[B₆O₉(OH)(1,6-dah)_0.5]·H₂O (3, 1,6-dah = 1,6-diaminlhexane) and [(1,3-dap)Cd@B₅O₈(OH)]·0.5H₂O (4), were made under solvothermal conditions. 1 and 2 are isostructural and feature a 2D layer built by B₆O₉(OH) clusters and modified by en and 1,3-dap via B-N-C linkages. By replacing en and 1,3-dap with longer and more flexible 1,6-dah, a new type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 3 was obtained, which was composed of the same B₆O₉(OH) cluster layers as in 1 and 2 and 1,6-dah linkers. By replacing alkali metal K with transition metal Cd under similar synthetic conditions, another type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 4 was made in which the Cd-centered wheel cluster layers and 1,3-dap linkers were connected via Cd-N-C linkages.

Cationic coordination polymers with thirteen-fold interpenetrating dia networks: selective coloration and ion-controlled photochromism

A novel Cd-based cationic coordination polymer (Cd-CCP) constructed using viologen derivatives, which exhibits an unusual thirteen-fold interpenetrating diamondoid network, has been synthesized. Notably, Cd-CCP displays selective and naked-eye distinguished coloration and ion-controlled photochromism towards halide anions.

Nicotinic-Acid-Ornamented Tetrameric Rare-Earth-Substituted Phospho(III)tungstates with the Coexistence of Mixed Keggin/Dawson Building Blocks and Its Honeycomb Nanofilm for Detecting Toxins

A fascinating class of nicotinic-acid-ornamented tetrameric rare-earth (RE)-substituted phospho(III)tungstates [NH₂(CH₃)₂]₁₀Na₄H₈[RE₂(NA)(HNA)(H₂O)₆(W₂O₄)(β-H₂P₂^IIIW₁₃O₄₉)(α-HP^IIIW₉O₃₃)]₂·22 H₂O [RE = Nd³⁺ (1-Nd), Tb³⁺ (2-Tb), Dy³⁺ (3-Dy), Ho³⁺ (4-Ho), HNA = nicotinic acid] were isolated through a one-step reaction method of Na₂WO₄·2H₂O, H₃PO₃, HNA, NH₂(CH₃)₂·HCl, and RE(NO₃)·6H₂O. Of meticulous concern is that HPO₃^2- was used as a template to construct tetrameric RE-substituted phospho(III)tungstates including mixed heteropolyoxotungstate building blocks. Their hybrid polyoxoanions are composed of two symmetrical [RE₂(NA)(HNA)(H₂O)₆(W₂O₄)(β-H₂P₂^IIIW₁₃O₄₉)(α-HPW₉O₃₃)]^11- units linked by RE-O-W bonds. The symmetrical unit consists of one peculiar heterometal nicotinic-acid-ornamented [RE₂(NA)(HNA)(W₂O₄)]⁹⁺ cluster connecting a pentavacant Dawson-like [β-H₂P₂W₁₃O₄₉]^12- and a trivacant Keggin [α-HPW₉O₃₃]^8- subunits. Furthermore, dimethyldioctadecylammonium chloride (DMDODA·Cl) was used to combine with 1-Nd in the CHCl₃-H₂O system through electrostatic interactions, leading to the 1-Nd@DMDODA composite material. The honeycomb-patterned film of the 1-Nd @DMDODA composite material was successfully constructed by using the breath figure method on a glassy carbon electrode, which can offer abundant binding sites to Au nanoparticles (nano-Au). Ulteriorly, Au-functionalized 1-Nd@DMDODA-modified electrode was utilized as an electrochemical sensor to detect ochratoxin A, showing a good detection limit of 1.19 pM.

3d-4f Heterometallic cluster incorporated polyoxoniobates with magnetic properties

A series of 3d-4f heterometallic cluster incorporated polyoxoniobates (PONbs) with different magnetic properties were first made and characterized. This work not only provides a promising strategy to make new heterometallic cluster incorporated PONbs but also demonstrates an ideal model to probe how transition-metal ions influence the magnetic property of PONbs.

Tunable Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on 8-Connected Metal Trimers for High Ethane Uptake

Metal trimers [M₃ (O/OH)](OOCR)₆ are among the most important structural building blocks. From these trimers, a great success has been achieved in the design of 6- or 9-connected framework materials with various topological features and outstanding gas-sorption properties. In comparison, 8-connected trimer-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are rare. Given multiple competitive pathways for the formation of 6- or 9-connected frameworks, it remains challenging to identify synthetic or structural parameters that can be used to direct the self-assembly process toward trimer-based 8-connected materials. Here, a viable strategy called angle bending modulation is revealed for creating a prototypical MOF type based on 8-connected M₃ (OH)(OOCR)₅ (Py-R)₃ trimers (M = Zn, Co, Fe). As a proof of concept, six members in this family are synthesized using three types of ligands (CPM-80, -81, and -82). These materials do not possess open-metal sites and show excellent uptake capacity for various hydrocarbon gas molecules and inverse C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ selectivity. CPM-81-Co, made from 2,5-furandicarboxylate and isonicotinate, features selectivity of 1.80 with high uptake capacity for ethane (123 cm³ g^-1 ) and ethylene (113 cm³ g^-1 ) at 298 K and 1 bar.

Viologen-Based Cationic Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Cr2O72- Adsorption and Dye Separation

A novel cationic metal-organic framework composed of {Cu₂(COO)₄} paddle-wheel units and a tetracarboxylic viologen derivative, namely, {[Cu₂(bdcbp)(H₂O)₂]·2NO₃·2H₂O}_n (Cu-CMOF, H₄bdcbpCl₂ = 1,1'-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride), has been successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. In Cu-CMOF, the {Cu₂(COO)₄} unit and viologen derivative both act as four-connected nodes forming an ssb-type cationic network with 4².8⁴ topology, in which the positive charges are distributed on the organic viologen moieties. Deeper insight of the structure indicates that the 3D architecture of Cu-CMOF can be seen as packing of a 26-faceted polyhedral cage and two cuboid cages. Notably, Cu-CMOF displays a highly efficient anion exchange ability for capture and removal of anionic pollutants. UV-vis absorption spectra and digital images demonstrate that Cu-CMOF is capable of adsorbing the dichromate anion and anionic dyes effectively, such as methyl orange (MO^-), Congo red (CR^2-), and New Coccine (NC^3-). Meaningfully, anionic dyes (MO^-, CR^2-, and NC^3-) can be efficiently and selectively removed by Cu-CMOF in the presence of cationic dye methylene blue (MLB⁺). Such behaviors of anionic pollutant adsorption and dye separation are mainly caused by an ion-exchange process facilitated by the large cavity and decentralized distribution of positive charge in Cu-CMOF.

A Copper-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework as an Efficient Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Oxidation of Alkylbenzenes

A copper-containing polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF), Cu^I₁₂Cl₂(trz)₈[HPW₁₂O₄₀] (HENU-7, HENU = Henan University; trz = 1,2,4-triazole), has been successfully synthesized and well-characterized. In addition, the excellent catalytic ability of HENU-7 has been proved by the selective oxidation of diphenylmethane. Under the optimal conditions, the diphenylmethane conversion obtained over HENU-7 is 96%, while the selectivity to benzophenone is 99%, which outperforms most noble-metal-free POM-based catalysts. Moreover, HENU-7 is stable to reuse for five runs without an obvious loss in activity and also can catalyze the oxidation of different benzylic C-H with satisfactory conversions and selectivities, which implied the significant catalytic activity and recyclability.

Sn6 and Na4 Oxo Clusters Based Non-centrosymmetric Framework for Solution Iodine Absorption and Second Harmonic Generation Response

A three-dimensional non-centrosymmetric cluster organic framework has successfully been built from the {Sn₆} and {Na₄} cluster units via the oxalate ligand, which belongs to the first 3D framework containing different cluster units in the field of tin-oxo clusters. Besides the interesting structural characteristics, the obtained 3D framework not only can efficiently adsorb the iodine molecules but also displays the second harmonic generation response under the 1064 nm Q-switch laser.

{P2V3W15}-Polyoxometalates Functionalized with Phthalocyaninato Y and Yb Moieties

A tris(alkoxo)pyridine-augmented Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (nBu₄N)₆[WD-Py] (WD = P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉(OCH₂)₃C, Py = C₅H₄N) was functionalized with phthalocyaninato metal moieties (MPc where M = Y or Yb and Pc = C₃₂H₁₆N₈) to afford (nBu₄N)₄[HWD-Py(MPc)] compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect and identify the hybrid assembly. The magnetism studies reveal substantial differences between M = Yb (monomeric, single-ion paramagnetism) and M = Y (containing dimers, radical character). The results of electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetochemical calculations indicate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety to the polyoxometalate and of intermolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety of one molecule to the polyoxometalate unit of another molecule. These compounds with identified V^IV ions represent unique examples of transition-metal/lanthanide complex-POM hybrid compounds with nonphotoinduced charge transfer between electron donor and acceptor centers.

A Ni₁₂-substituted POM and a Ni₆-substituted POM have been synthesized and characterized. The compounds show a moderate catalytic activity in visible-light-driven CO₂ reduction reactions, and can serve as potential proton conduction materials.

Two highly stable inorganic–organic hybrid 3D frameworks based on Cu–Ln incorporated polyoxometalates for selective dye removal and proton conduction

Two highly stable inorganic–organic hybrid 3D TM–Ln incorporated POM-based framework materials have been successfully synthesized. The compounds can not only exhibit moderate proton conductivity but also selectively adsorb cationic dyes.

COF-inspired fabrication of two-dimensional polyoxometalate based open frameworks for biomimetic catalysis

The development of highly efficient and robust biomimetic catalysts is an essential and feasible strategy to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of natural enzymes. Inspired by the synthetic strategy of covalent organic frameworks, we adopted a covalent-bond-driven strategy to prepare polyoxometalate (POM) based open frameworks (NKPOM-OFs = Nankai University POM-OFs) with abundant Mo[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups that can mimic the active center of sulfite oxidase. Four 2-dimensional (2D) NKPOM-OFs were designed and synthesized via the condensation reaction of linear amino-containing POMs with planar tetra-aldehyde monomers. Benefitting from the high crystallinity, the structures of 2D POM-OFs can be successfully determined from structural simulations. The results unveiled that NKPOM-OFs possessed 2D staggered stacking layered structures with the sql topology. All these NKPOM-OFs exhibited high crystallinity and stability and demonstrated outstanding performance to serve as biomimetic catalysts of sulfite oxidase with good recyclability. Notably, exfoliation of NKPOM-OFs under ultrasonic treatment can significantly boost the catalytic activity with almost two times faster reaction rates. This study not only enriches the facile and versatile synthesis strategy for POM-OFs but also provides new biomimetic platforms for biocatalysis.

Stepwise Assembly of an Electroactive Framework from a Co6 S8 Superatomic Metalloligand and Cuprous Iodide Building Units

The design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that incorporate more than one metal cluster constituent is a challenging task. Conventional one-pot reaction protocols require judicious selection of ligand and metal ion precursors, yet remain unpredictable. Stable, preformed nanoclusters, with ligand shells that can undergo additional coordination-driven reactions, provide a platform for assembling multi-cluster solids with precision. Herein, a discrete Co₆ S₈ (PTA)₆ (PTA=1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) superatomic-metalloligand is assembled into a three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymer comprising Cu₄ I₄ secondary building units (SBUs). The resulting heterobimetallic framework (1) contains two distinct cluster constituents and bifunctional PTA linkers. Solid-state diffuse reflectance studies reveal that 1 is an optical semiconductor with a band-gap of 1.59 eV. Framework-modified electrodes exhibit reversible redox behavior in the solid state arising from the Co₆ S₈ superatoms, which remain intact during framework synthesis.
