Abstract
Compared to the effect of the active hydrogen atom in the cation in protic ionic liquids (ILs) on their properties and applications, there are very few reports on the role of the active hydrogen atom in the anion. In order to better understand the role of the active hydrogen atom in the anion, the physical properties, CO2 capture and conversion of three hydantoin-based anion-functionalized ILs ([P4442][Hy], [P4442]2[Hy], and [HDBU][Hy]) have been investigated via experiments, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations in this work. The results show that the active hydrogen atom in the anion can form anionic hydrogen bonding networks, which significantly increase the melting point and viscosity and decrease the basicity of the IL, thereby weakening its ability to capture and convert CO2. Interestingly, [P4442][Hy] undergoes a solid/liquid two-phase transition during CO2 absorption/desorption due to the formation of quasi-intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the active hydrogen atom and the O- atom of the absorbed CO2, suggesting that the presence of the active hydrogen atom gives [P4442][Hy] the potential to be an excellent molecular switch. As there is no active hydrogen atom in the anion of [P4442]2[Hy], it shows excellent CO2 capture and conversion performance through the double-site interaction. [HDBU][Hy] shows the weakest catalytic CO2 conversion due to the presence of active hydrogen atoms on both its anion and cation. Therefore, the active hydrogen atom in the anion may play a more important role in the properties and potential applications of ILs than the active hydrogen atom in the cation.

Abstract
ConspectusIonic liquids (ILs) are attracting increasing interest in science and engineering due to their unique properties that can be tailored for specific applications. Clearly, a better understanding of their behavior on the microscopic scale will help to elucidate macroscopic fluid phenomena and thereby promote potential applications. The advantageous properties of these innovative fluids arise from the delicate balance of Coulomb interactions, hydrogen bonding, and dispersion forces. The development of these properties requires a fundamental understanding of the strength, location, and direction of the different types of interactions and their contribution to the overall phase behavior. Contrary to expectations, hydrogen bonding and dispersion interactions have a significant influence on the structure, dynamics, and phase behavior of ILs.The synergy between experimental and theoretical methods has now advanced to a stage where hydrogen bonds and dispersion effects as well as the competition between the two can be studied in detail. In this account, we demonstrate that a suitable combination of spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and theoretical methods enables the detection, dissection, and quantification of noncovalent interactions, even in complex systems such as ionic liquids. This approach encompasses far-infrared vibrational spectroscopy (FIR), various thermodynamic methods for determining enthalpies of vaporization, and quantum chemical techniques that allow us to switch dispersion contributions on or off when calculating the energies and spectroscopic properties of clusters. We briefly discuss these experimental and theoretical methods, before providing various examples illustrating how the mélange of Coulomb interaction, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion forces can be analyzed, and their individual contributions quantified. First, we demonstrated that both hydrogen bonding and dispersion interactions are manifested in the FIR spectra and can be quantified by observed shifts of characteristic spectral signatures. Through the selection of suitable protic ionic liquids (PILs) featuring anions with varying interaction strengths and alkyl chain lengths, we were able to demonstrate that dispersion interactions can compete with hydrogen bonding. The resultant transition enthalpy serves as a measure of the dispersion interaction. Contrary to expectations, PILs possess lower enthalpies of vaporization compared with aprotic ILs (AILs). The reason for this is simple: In protic ILs, ion pairs carry both the hydrogen bond and attractive dispersion between the cation and anion into the gas phase. By utilizing a well-curated set of protic ILs and molecular analogues, we successfully disentangled Coulomb interaction, hydrogen bonding, and dispersion interaction through purely thermodynamic methods.

Abstract
In this study, we determined the enthalpies of vaporisation for a suitable set of molecular and ionic liquids using modern techniques for vapour pressure measurements, such as the quartz crystal microbalance, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gas chromatographic methods. This enabled us to measure reasonable vapour pressures, avoiding the problem of the decomposition of the ionic liquids at high temperatures. The enthalpies of vaporisation could be further analysed by applying the well-known "group contribution" methods for molecular liquids and the "centerpiece" method for ionic liquids. This combined approach allowed for the dissection of the enthalpies of vaporisation into different types of molecular interaction, including hydrogen bonding and the dispersion interaction in the liquid phase, without knowing the existing species in both the liquid and gas phases.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are recognized as an environmentally friendly alternative to replacing volatile molecular solvents. Knowledge of vaporization thermodynamics is crucial for practical applications. The vaporization thermodynamics of five ionic liquids containing a pyridinium cation and the [NTf2] anion were studied using a quartz crystal microbalance. Vapor pressure-temperature dependences were used to derive the enthalpies of vaporization of these ionic liquids. Vaporization enthalpies of the pyridinium-based ionic liquids available in the literature were collected and uniformly adjusted to the reference temperature T = 298.15 K. The consistent sets of evaluated vaporization enthalpies were used to develop the “centerpiece”-based group-additivity method for predicting enthalpies of vaporization of ionic compounds. The general transferability of the contributions to the enthalpy of vaporization from the molecular liquids to the ionic liquids was established. A small, but not negligible correction term was supposed to reconcile the estimated results with the experiment. The corrected “centerpiece” approach was recommended to predict the vaporization enthalpies of ILs.

Abstract
In this work, we have theoretically studied the dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) constructed from geminal methylimidazolium dication with varying amino acid anions and spacers using density functional theory. Amino acid-based DILs form via strong C-H···O hydrogen bonds. These hydrogen bonds have a significant role in stabilizing the DILs. The higher cation-anion interaction energy in the order of covalent bond energy and liquid density of DILs imply higher thermal stability than their mono analogues. The C-H stretching frequencies are above 3100 cm-1 in all complexes and form a signature for DILs. Interestingly, aliphatic and aromatic amino acid anions show similar molecular properties. Overall, the DILs formed from amino acids exhibit high stability and large surface tension and are chemically non-toxic; hence, they can replace inorganic DILs.

Abstract
The formation of aggregates of ionic species is a crucial process in liquids and solutions. Ion speciation is particularly interesting for the case of ionic liquids (ILs) since these Coulombic fluids consist solely of ions. Most of their unique properties, such as enthalpies of vaporization and conductivities, are strongly related to ion pair formation. Here, we show that the balance of hydrogen-bonded contact ion pairs (CIP) and solvent-separated (SIP) ion pairs in protic ionic liquids (PILs) and in their mixtures with water can be well understood by a combination of far-infrared (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of PIL/water aggregates, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of PIL/water mixtures. This combined approach is applied to mixtures of triethylammonium methanesulfonate [Et3NH][MeSO3] with water. It is shown that ion speciation in this mixture depends on three parameters: the relative hydrogen bond acceptor strength of the counter ion and the molecular solvent, the solvent concentration, and the temperature. For selected PIL/water mixtures, the equilibrium constants for CIPs and SIPs were determined as a function of the solvent content and temperature. Finally, for the studied PIL/water mixtures, the transition from CIPs to SIPs could be understood on enthalpic and entropic grounds. A detailed picture of this interconversion process could be described at the molecular level by means of MD simulations. In addition, the concentration dependence of ion pair formation can be well understood with help of a simplified "cartoon-like" statistical model describing hydrogen bond redistribution.

Abstract
Ionic liquids are described by a delicate balance of Coulomb interaction, hydrogen bonding and dispersion forces. Dissecting the different types of interactions from thermodynamic properties is still a challenge. Here, we show that comparison of vaporization enthalpies of tetra-alkyl-ammonium ionic liquids with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [NTf2]- anions and the related molecular liquids, trialkylamines, allows for determining dispersion interactions in the gas phase ion-pairs. For this purpose, we measured vapor pressures and vaporization enthalpies of these ionic and molecular liquids by using a quartz-crystal microbalance. For supporting these data, we determined the vaporization enthalpies additionally from experimental activity coefficients at infinite dilution. Characteristic alkyl chain length dependences of the vaporization enthalpies have been established and were used for quantifying the dispersion forces in the gas phase species. The dissected dispersion contributions suggest that the alkyl chains do not show star-like topologies but embrace the anion maximizing the dispersion interactions. For the longest alkyl chains with eight carbon atoms, the dispersion interaction is as strong as two and a half hydrogen bonds. The proportion of dispersion in the gas phase species depending on the number of methylene groups in the ammonium cations is strongly supported by quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Abstract
Ibuprofen is a well-established non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, inhibiting the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase. One of the key features defining the ibuprofen structure is the doubly intermolecular O-HO[double bond, length as m-dash]C hydrogen bond in cyclic dimers as know from carboxylic acids and confirmed by X-ray analysis. Until now, there was neither information about the vaporization enthalpy of ibuprofen nor about how this thermal property is determined by the subtle balance between different types of intermolecular interaction. In this study we derive the vaporization enthalpy of ibuprofen from thermochemical experiments to be . We dissected the hydrogen bond energy, EHB = 45.0 kJ mol-1, exclusively from measured vaporization enthalpies of related aliphatic carboxylic acids, their homomorph methyl esters and alkyl acetates, respectively. This contribution from hydrogen bonding could be confirmed almost quantitatively from quantum chemical calculations of ibuprofen clusters, which also suggest dispersion interaction of similar order (Edisp = 47 kJ mol-1). Following the full analysis of the gas-vapor transition enthalpy, we studied the changing structural components from the solid to the liquid phase of ibuprofen by means of Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. The cyclic dimers as observed in the X-ray patterns are essentially preserved in the liquid state just above the melting point. However, with increasing temperature the doubly hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers are replaced by singly hydrogen-bonded linear dimers in the liquid ibuprofen. The transfer enthalpy from the temperature-dependent equilibria of both dimers as obtained from the IR intensity ratios of the vibrational bands quantifies for the first time the energy of the released, single hydrogen bond to be EHB = 21.0 kJ mol-1. Overall, we show that a combination of thermodynamics, infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemistry provides quantification and detailed understanding of structure and molecular interaction in ibuprofen and related compounds.

Abstract
We present deuteron quadrupole coupling constants (DQCC) for hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) in the crystalline or glassy states characterizing two types of hydrogen bonding: The regular Coulomb-enhanced hydrogen bonds between cation and anion (c-a), and the unusual hydrogen bonds between cation and cation (c-c), which are present despite repulsive Coulomb forces. We measure these sensitive probes of hydrogen bonding by means of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The DQCCs of (c-a) ion pairs and (c-c) H-bonds are compared to those of salt bridges in supramolecular complexes and those present in molecular liquids. At low temperatures, the (c-c) species successfully compete with the (c-a) ion pairs and dominate the cluster populations. Equilibrium constants obtained from molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations show van't Hoff behavior with small transition enthalpies between the differently H-bonded species. We show that cationic-cluster formation prevents these ILs from crystallizing. With cooling, the (c-c) hydrogen bonds persist, resulting in supercooling and glass formation.

Abstract
For ionic liquids (ILs), both the large number of possible cation + anion combinations and their ionic nature provide a unique challenge for understanding intermolecular interactions. Cohesive energy density, ced, is used to quantify the strength of intermolecular interactions for molecular liquids, and is determined using the enthalpy of vaporization. A critical analysis of the experimental challenges and data to obtain ced for ILs is provided. For ILs there are two methods to judge the strength of intermolecular interactions, due to the presence of multiple constituents in the vapour phase of ILs. Firstly, cedIP, where the ionic vapour constituent is neutral ion pairs, the major constituent of the IL vapour. Secondly, cedC+A, where the ionic vapour constituents are isolated ions. A cedIP dataset is presented for 64 ILs. For the first time an experimental cedC+A, a measure of the strength of the total intermolecular interaction for an IL, is presented. cedC+A is significantly larger for ILs than ced for most molecular liquids, reflecting the need to break all of the relatively strong electrostatic interactions present in ILs. However, the van der Waals interactions contribute significantly to IL volatility due to the very strong electrostatic interaction in the neutral ion pair ionic vapour. An excellent linear correlation is found between cedIP and the inverse of the molecular volume. A good linear correlation is found between IL cedIP and IL Gordon parameter (which are dependent primarily on surface tension). ced values obtained through indirect methods gave similar magnitude values to cedIP. These findings show that cedIP is very important for understanding IL intermolecular interactions, in spite of cedIP not being a measure of the total intermolecular interactions of an IL. In the outlook section, remaining challenges for understanding IL intermolecular interactions are outlined.

Abstract
Gigahertz- to terahertz-frequency infrared and Raman spectra contain a wealth of information concerning the structure, intermolecular forces, and dynamics of ionic liquids. However, these spectra generally have a large number of contributions ranging from slow diffusional modes to underdamped librations and intramolecular vibrational modes. This makes it difficult to isolate effects such as the role of Coulombic and hydrogen-bonding interactions. We have applied far-infrared and ultrafast optical Kerr effect spectroscopies on carefully selected ions with a greater or lesser degree of symmetry in order to isolate spectral signals of interest. This has allowed us to demonstrate the presence of longitudinal and transverse optical phonon modes and a great similarity of alkylammonium-based protic ionic liquids to liquid water. The data show that such phonon modes will be present in all ionic liquids, requiring a reinterpretation of their spectra.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) play a key role in many chemical applications. As regards the theoretical approach, ILs show added difficulties in calculations due to the composition of the ion pair and to the fact that they are liquids. Although density functional theory (DFT) can treat this kind of systems to predict physico-chemical properties, common versions of these methods fail to perform accurate predictions of geometries, interaction energies, dipole moments, and other properties related to the molecular structure. In these cases, dispersion and self-interaction error (SIE) corrections need to be introduced to improve DFT calculations involving ILs. We show that the inclusion of dispersion is needed to obtain good geometries and accurate interaction energies. SIE needs to be corrected to describe the charges and dipoles in the ion pair correctly. The use of range-separated functionals allows us to obtain interaction energies close to the CCSD(T) level. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The accurate prediction of physicochemical properties of condensed systems is a longstanding goal of theoretical (quantum) chemistry. Ionic liquids comprising entirely of ions provide a unique challenge in this respect due to the diverse chemical nature of available ions and the complex interplay of intermolecular interactions among them, thus resulting in the wide variability of physicochemical properties, such as thermodynamic, transport, and spectroscopic properties. It is well understood that intermolecular forces are directly linked to physicochemical properties of condensed systems, and therefore, an understanding of this relationship would greatly aid in the design and synthesis of functionalized materials with tailored properties for an application at hand. This review aims to give an overview of how electronic structure properties obtained from quantum chemical methods such as interaction/binding energy and its fundamental components, dipole moment, polarizability, and orbital energies, can help shed light on the energetic, physical, and spectroscopic properties of semi-Coulomb systems such as ionic liquids. Particular emphasis is given to the prediction of their thermodynamic, transport, spectroscopic, and solubilizing properties.

Abstract
Vibrational spectroscopy has continued use as a powerful tool to characterize ionic liquids since the literature on room temperature molten salts experienced the rapid increase in number of publications in the 1990's. In the past years, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies have provided insights on ionic interactions and the resulting liquid structure in ionic liquids. A large body of information is now available concerning vibrational spectra of ionic liquids made of many different combinations of anions and cations, but reviews on this literature are scarce. This review is an attempt at filling this gap. Some basic care needed while recording IR or Raman spectra of ionic liquids is explained. We have reviewed the conceptual basis of theoretical frameworks which have been used to interpret vibrational spectra of ionic liquids, helping the reader to distinguish the scope of application of different methods of calculation. Vibrational frequencies observed in IR and Raman spectra of ionic liquids based on different anions and cations are discussed and eventual disagreements between different sources are critically reviewed. The aim is that the reader can use this information while assigning vibrational spectra of an ionic liquid containing another particular combination of anions and cations. Different applications of IR and Raman spectroscopies are given for both pure ionic liquids and solutions. Further issues addressed in this review are the intermolecular vibrations that are more directly probed by the low-frequency range of IR and Raman spectra and the applications of vibrational spectroscopy in studying phase transitions of ionic liquids.
