Abstract
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles possessing N-alkenyl substituents are an important structural motif. However, the synthetic methods reported thus far cannot selectively synthesize the Z stereoisomer on the basis of the stereochemistry of the substituted alkenes. Herein, we report the stereoconvergent coupling of heterocycles and alkenyl halides consisting of a mixture of E/Z stereoisomers, which selectively afforded the thermodynamically less stable Z-coupling product. Mechanistic studies suggest that a nickel photoredox catalyst facilitates the formation of N-centered heteroarene radicals.

Abstract
Herein, we report a synthetic method to access a range of highly substituted indoles via the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed transfer of 2° alkyl groups from amines. The transition-metal-free catalytic approach has been demonstrated across a broad range of indoles and amine 2° alkyl donors, including various substituents on both reacting components, to access useful C(3)-alkylated indole products. The alkyl transfer process can be performed using Schlenk line techniques in combination with commercially available B(C6F5)3·nH2O and solvents, which obviates the requirement for specialized equipment (e.g., glovebox).

Abstract
The β-C-H functionalization of amines is one of the most powerful tools for the synthesis of saturated nitrogen-containing heterocycles in organic synthesis. However, the β-C-H functionalization of amines via redox-neutral addition with cyclic-ketimines is still unprecedented. Herein, the β-C-H functionalization of tertiary amines is described, providing the corresponding 1,3-diamines containing the indolin-3-one moiety in high yields via the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed borrowing hydrogen strategy. According to the experimental results, a possible catalytic cycle has been proposed to rationalize the process of this reaction. Notably, the β-C-H alkylation of amines is external oxidant- and transition-metal-free, which makes a significant contribution to promoting economical chemical synthesis.

Abstract
One of the most sustainable and promising approaches for hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) production in a low-cost and environment-friendly way is photosynthesis, which, however, suffers from poor carrier utilization and low H2 O2 productivity. The addition of proton donors such as isopropanol or ethanol can increase H2 O2 production, which, unfortunately, will inevitably elevate the entire cost while wasting the oxidizing power of holes (h+ ). Herein, the tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) is employed as a distinctive proton donor for the thermodynamically feasible and selective semi-dehydrogenation reaction to highly valuable dihydroisoquinolines (DHIQs), and meanwhile, to couple with and promote H2 O2 generation in one photoredox reaction under the photocatalysis by dual-functional Zn3 In2 S6 photocatalyst. Surprisingly, the suitably defective Zn3 In2 S6 offers an excellent and near-stoichiometric co-production performance of H2 O2 and DHIQs at unprecedentedly high rates of 66.4 and 62.1 mmol h-1 g-1 under visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm), respectively, which outperforms all the previously available reports even though sacrificial agents were employed in those reports. Additionally, photocatalytic redox reaction mechanism demonstrates that H2 O2 can be generated through multiple pathways, highlighting the synergistic effect among ROS (·O2 - and 1 O2 ), h+ and proton donor, which has been ignored in previous studies.

Abstract
Molecular hydrogen (H2) is one of the most important energy carriers. In the midterm future, a huge amount of H2 will be produced from a variety of hydrocarbon sources through conversion and removal of contaminants such as CO and CO2. However, bypassing these purification processes is desirable, given their energy consumption and environmental impact, which ultimately increases the cost of H2. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to separate H2 from a gaseous mixture of H2/CO/CO2/CH4 that can include an excess of CO and CO2 relative to H2 and simultaneously store it in N-heterocyclic compounds that act as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which can be applied to produce H2 by subsequent dehydrogenation. Our results demonstrate that LOHCs can potentially be used for H2 purification from CO- and CO2-rich crude H2 in addition to their well-established use in H2 storage.

Abstract
An efficient B(C6F5)3-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-S cross-coupling reaction of thiophenol with indoles was developed, affording a wide range of diaryl sulfides in good yields. An electron donor-acceptor complex between B(C6F5)3 and indoles was formed, facilitating the photoinduced single-electron transfer (SET) from indole substrates to the B(C6F5)3 catalyst. This protocol demonstrates a new reaction model using B(C6F5)3 as a single-electron oxidant.

Abstract
Herein, we present a mild and efficient method for synthesizing enantioenriched tetrahydroquinoline-fused cyclobutenes through a cascade reaction between 1,2-dihydroquinolines and alkynones with catalysis by chiral spiro-bicyclic bisboranes. The bisboranes served two functions: first they catalyzed a hydride transfer to convert the 1,2-dihydroquinoline substrate to a 1,4-dihydroquinoline, and then they activated the alkynone substrate for an enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition reaction with the 1,4-dihydroquinoline generated in situ.

Abstract
Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane has been found to catalyze the two‐fold C(sp3)−H silylation of various trialkylamine derivatives with dihydrosilanes, furnishing the corresponding 4‐silapiperidines in decent yields. The multi‐step reaction cascade involves amine‐to‐enamine dehydrogenation at two alkyl residues and two electrophilic silylation reactions of those enamines, one inter‐ and one intramolecular.

Abstract
The direct dehydrogenation of alkanes is among the most efficient ways to access valuable alkene products. Although several catalysts have been designed to promote this transformation, they have unfortunately found limited applications in fine chemical synthesis. Here, we report a conceptually novel strategy for the catalytic, intermolecular dehydrogenation of alkanes using a ruthenium catalyst. The combination of a redox-active ligand and a sterically hindered aryl radical intermediate has unleashed this novel strategy. Importantly, mechanistic investigations have been performed to provide a conceptual framework for the further development of this new catalytic dehydrogenation system.

Abstract
In contrast to transition metal-catalysed C-H functionalisation, highly efficient construction of C-C and C-X (X = N, O, S, B, Si, etc.) bonds through metal-free catalytic C-H functionalisation remains one of the most challenging tasks for synthetic chemists. In recent years, electron-deficient boron-based catalyst systems have exhibited great potential for C-H bond transformations. Such emerging systems may greatly enrich the chemistry of C-H functionalisation and main-group element catalysis, and will also provide enormous opportunities in synthetic chemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical biology. This article aims to give a timely comprehensive overview to recognise the current status of electron-deficient boron-based catalysis in C-H functionalisation and stimulate the development of more efficient catalytic systems.

Abstract
We disclose a catalytic method for β-C(sp3)-H functionalization of N-alkylamines for the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched β-substituted amines, entities prevalent in pharmaceutical compounds and used to generate different families of chiral catalysts. We demonstrate that a catalyst system comprising of seemingly competitive Lewis acids, B(C6F5)3, and a chiral Mg- or Sc-based complex, promotes the highly enantioselective union of N-alkylamines and α,β-unsaturated compounds. An array of δ-amino carbonyl compounds was synthesized under redox-neutral conditions by enantioselective reaction of a N-alkylamine-derived enamine and an electrophile activated by the chiral Lewis acid co-catalyst. The utility of the approach is highlighted by late-stage β-C-H functionalization of bioactive amines. Investigations in regard to the mechanistic nuances of the catalytic processes are described.

Abstract
An aerobic dehydrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles catalyzed by Grubbs catalyst is developed. The reaction is applicable to various nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The exceptionally high functional group compatibility of this method was confirmed by the oxidation of an unprotected dihydroindolactam V to indolactam V. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the oxygen-mediated structural change of the Grubbs catalyst, we integrated ring-closing metathesis and subsequent aerobic dehydrogenation to develop the novel assisted-tandem catalysis using molecular oxygen as a chemical trigger. The utility of the assisted-tandem catalysis was demonstrated by the concise synthesis of N-containing fused heteroarenes including a natural antibiotic, pyocyanine.

Abstract
This Essay highlights the complex issue of twinning in science publications. Historical accounts present cases where two scientists focused on the same problem and came up with the same solution following different paths. This has changed in the present day. The concurrent publication of rather similar research papers from different groups has increased in frequency since 2010. In the past, twinning in research publications was serendipitous, and there was a healthy competition among teams working on similar projects. Today, twinning has become more frequent. This can be attributed to the urge of researchers to have publications on popular topics, the tendency to base research programs on popular keywords, and funding agencies preferentially supporting certain areas of research. With vast amounts of literature being generated, editorial offices and referees may not be able to find these twins very easily. As we inch away from human ingenuity towards artificial intelligence, twinning may become even more frequent.

Abstract
Tandem Friedel-Crafts (FC) and C-H/C-O coupling reactions catalyzed by tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (B(C6 F5 )3 ) were achieved without using any other additive in the absence of solvent. This process can be used for the reactions between a series of dialkylanilines and vinyl ethers with good isolated yields of bis(4-dialkylaminophenyl) compounds. Based on combined theoretical and experimental studies, the possible reaction mechanism was proposed. B(C6 F5 )3 can activate the C=C and C-O bond for FC and C-H/C-O coupling reactions respectively. The FC reaction is slow, which is followed by a fast C-H/C-O coupling.

Abstract
An efficient catalytic method to convert an α-C-H bond of N-alkylamines into an α-C-alkynyl bond was developed. In the past, such transformations were carried out under oxidative conditions, and the enantioselective variants were confined to tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives. Here, we disclose a method for the union of N-alkylamines and trimethylsilyl alkynes, without the presence of an external oxidant and promoted through cooperative actions of two Lewis acids, B(C6F5)3 and a Cu-based complex. A variety of propargylamines can be synthesized in high diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The utility of the approach is demonstrated by the late-stage site-selective modification of bioactive amines. Kinetic investigations that shed light on various mechanistic nuances of the catalytic process are presented.

Abstract
Through a rapid screening of Cp*Ir complexes based on a turn-on type fluorescence readout, a [Cp*Ir(dipyrido[3,2-a : 2',3'-c]phenazine)Cl]+ complex was found to catalyze the blue-light promoted dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles under physiological conditions. In the dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines, the catalyst preferentially yielded the monodehydrogenated product, accompanying H2O2 generation. We surmise that this mechanism may be reminiscent of flavin-dependent oxidases.

Abstract
Described herein is the development of a borane-catalyzed cine-silylative ring-opening of α-methyl azacycles. This transformation involves four-step cascade processes: (i) exo-dehydrogenation of alicyclic amine, (ii) hydrosilylation of the resultant enamine, (iii) silylium-induced cis-β-amino elimination to open the ring skeleton, and (iv) hydrosilylation of the terminal olefin. The present borane catalysis also works efficiently for the C-N bond cleavage of acyclic tertiary amines. On the basis of experimental and computational studies, the silicon atom was elucidated to play a pivotal role in the β-amino elimination step.

Abstract
Aromatic N-heterocycles such as quinolines, isoquinolines, and indolines are synthesized via sodium tert-butoxide-promoted oxidative dehydrogenation of the saturated heterocycles in DMSO solution. This reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and has a good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies suggest a radical pathway involving hydrogen abstraction of dimsyl radicals from the N-H bond or α-C-H of the substrates and subsequent oxidation of the nitrogen or α-aminoalkyl radicals.

Abstract
![]()
The
direct C3 alkylation of indoles and oxindoles is a challenging
transformation, and only a few direct methods exist. Utilizing the
underexplored ability of triaryl boranes to mediate the heterolytic
cleavage of α-nitrogen C–H bonds in amines, we have developed
a catalytic approach for the direct C3 alkylation of a wide range
of indoles and oxindoles using amine-based alkylating agents. We also
employed this borane-catalyzed strategy in an alkylation-ring opening
cascade.
