Aggregation-induced emission-active supramolecular polymers: from controlled preparation to applications

Supramolecular polymers are typical self-assemblies, in which repeating monomer units are bonded together with dynamic and reversible noncovalent interactions. Supramolecular polymers can combine the advantages of polymer science and supramolecular chemistry. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) means that a molecule remains faintly emissive in the dispersed state but intensively luminescent in a highly aggregated state. AIE has brought new opportunities and further development potential to the field of polymeric chemistry. The integration of AIE luminogens with supramolecular interactions can provide new vitality for supramolecular polymers. Therefore, it is essential for scientists to understand the preparation and applications of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. This review focuses on the recent advanced progress in the preparation of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. In addition, we summarize the newly developed supramolecular polymers with an AIE nature and their applications in chemical sensing, and in vitro and in vivo imaging, as well as the visualization of their structure and properties. Finally, the development trends and challenges of AIE-active supramolecular polymers are prospected.

Total Synthesis of (-)-Fasicularin

Asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-fasicularin was achieved in nine steps from a commercially available inexpensive material, by leveraging (1) an aryl radical-mediated, copper-catalyzed Sonogashira-type cross-coupling, (2) a Au-catalyzed tandem intramolecular alkyne hydroamination/iminium formation/intramolecular allylation, and (3) a tandem hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis/intramolecular reductive amination as key transformations.

Light-Driven Synthesis and Functionalization of Bicycloalkanes, Cubanes and Related Bioisosteres

Bicycloalkanes, cubanes and their structural analogues have emerged as bioisosteres of (hetero)arenes. To meet increasing demand, the chemical community has developed a plethora of novel synthetic methods. In this review, we assess the progress made in the field of light-driven construction and functionalization of such relevant molecules. We have focused on diverse structural targets, as well as on reaction processes giving access to: (i) [1.1.1]-bicyclopentanes (BCPs); (ii) [2.2.1]-bicyclohexanes (BCHs); (iii) [3.1.1]-bicycloheptanes (BCHeps); and (iv) cubanes; as well as other structurally related scaffolds. Finally, future perspectives dealing with the identification of novel reaction manifolds to access new functionalized bioisosteric units are discussed.

Expanding the Frontier of Linear Drug Design: Cu-Catalyzed Csp -Csp 3 -Coupling of Electron-Deficient SF4 -Alkynes with Alkyl Iodides

Despite the attractive properties of tetrafluorosulfanyl (SF4 ) compounds in drug discovery, medicinal research on SF4 molecules is hindered by the scarcity of suitable synthetic methodologies. Drawing inspiration from the well-established Sonogashira cross-coupling of terminal alkynes under Pd-catalysis, it is envisioned that SF4 -alkynes can serve as effective coupling partners. To overcome the challenges associated with the electron-deficient nature of SF4 -alkynes and the lability of the SF4 unit under transition-metal catalysis, an aryl radical mediated Csp -Csp 3 cross-coupling reaction is successfully developed under Cu catalysis. This methodology facilitates the coupling of SF4 -alkynes with alkyl iodides, leading to the immediate synthesis of SF4 -attached drug-like molecules. These findings highlight the potential impact of SF4 -containing molecules in the drug industry, paving the way for further research in this emerging field.

A General Copper Catalytic System for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Unactivated Secondary and Primary Alkyl Halides with Arylborons

Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings (SMC) are powerful tools for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds. However, the couplings of sp3-hybridized alkyl halides with arylborons often encounter several problematic issues such as sluggish oxidation addition of alkyl halides and competitive β-hydride elimination side pathways of metal-alkyl species. In precedent reports, copper is mainly utilized for the coupling of sp2-aryl halides, and the cross-couplings with unactivated alkyl halides are far less reported. Herein, we demonstrate that a high-efficiency copper system enabled the coupling of arylborons with various unactivated secondary and primary alkyl halides including bromides, iodides, and even robust chlorides. The present system features broad scope, excellent functionality tolerance, scalability, and practicality. Moreover, the current system could be applied for the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules in moderate to high efficiency.

Synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes by cross-coupling induced by transition metals - formation of C-C bonds

The synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs), by forming a C-C bond, can be achieved by cross-coupling reactions using transition metal catalysts. Two main strategies are described to access these 1,3-disubstituted BCPs, either from nucleophilic BCPs or electrophilic BCPs. Mechanisms are included where relevant.

Photochemical Sonogashira coupling reactions: beyond traditional palladium-copper catalysis

Sonogashira coupling is one of the Nobel reactions discovered in 1975 to form a C-C bond using palladium and copper as co-catalysts. Incorporating alkyne functionalities either in macro or micro molecules by using this Sonogashira reaction has already proven its viability and relevance in the sphere of synthetic chemistry. While aiming for sustainable chemistry, in recent years, visible light photoredox catalysts have appeared as an advanced tool in this regard. In this review, we aim to portray a comprehensive summary of modern visible light photo redox catalyzed Sonogashira reaction, which will leave space for the readers to rethink alternative strategies to conduct the Sonogashira reaction. This review briefly describes the implementation of various metal-based nanomaterial photocatalysts, developing either copper or palladium-free photocatalytic methods, and organo-photolytic and bioinspired photocatalysts for the Sonogashira coupling reactions. Besides, this review also gives a concise overview of the mechanistic aspects and highlights selective examples for substrate scope.

Cu(I)/N,N-Imine Ligand Catalyzed C(sp3)-C(sp) Coupling of Alkyl Bromides with Alkynes: Scope and Mechanistic Investigation

We have developed an efficient Cu/N,N-bidentate imine ligand catalytic system for C(sp³)-C(sp) coupling to obtain internal alkynes, di/trisubstituted allenes and strained bridged cyclic lactams in moderate to excellent yields from readily available alkyl(benzyl) bromides in one-pot transformation. Density Functional Theory (DFT) assisted mechanistic study along with control experiments support the involvement of bialkynylated copper species which undergo single electron transfer (SET) with alkyl halides to generate radical intermediate in the reaction. The N,N-bidentate imine ligand plays a vital role in stabilization of intermediate copper complex and facilitates the product formation.

Photoinduced Copper-Catalyzed C(sp3)-P Bond Formation by Coupling of Secondary Phosphines with N-(Acyloxy)phthalimides and N-Fluorocarboxamides

A photoinduced copper-catalyzed C(sp³)-P bond formation has been developed by using N-(acyloxy)phthalimides as radical precursors and secondary phosphine boranes as coupling partners. A variety of alkyl carboxylic acid derivatives can be readily transformed into the corresponding phosphines with high reaction efficiency and structural diversity. Besides, utilizing the 1,5-HAT of the N-centered radical process, the δ C(sp³)-H bond can be coupled with secondary phosphines, which provides a novel method for the regioselective formation of C(sp³)-P bonds.

Aryl Radical Enabled, Copper-Catalyzed Sonogashira-Type Cross-Coupling of Alkynes with Alkyl Iodides

Despite the success of Sonogashira coupling for the synthesis of arylalkynes and conjugated enynes, the engagement of unactivated alkyl halides in such reactions remains historically challenging. We report herein a strategy that merges Cu-catalyzed alkyne transfer with the aryl radical activation of carbon-halide bonds to enable a general approach for the coupling of alkyl iodides with terminal alkynes. This unprecedented Sonogashira-type cross-coupling reaction tolerates a broad range of functional groups and has been applied to the late-stage cross-coupling of densely functionalized pharmaceutical agents as well as the synthesis of positron emission tomography tracers.

Photoactive Copper Complexes: Properties and Applications

Photocatalyzed and photosensitized chemical processes have seen growing interest recently and have become among the most active areas of chemical research, notably due to their applications in fields such as medicine, chemical synthesis, material science or environmental chemistry. Among all homogeneous catalytic systems reported to date, photoactive copper(I) complexes have been shown to be especially attractive, not only as alternative to noble metal complexes, and have been extensively studied and utilized recently. They are at the core of this review article which is divided into two main sections. The first one focuses on an exhaustive and comprehensive overview of the structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties of mononuclear copper(I) complexes, typical examples highlighting the most critical structural parameters and their impact on the properties being presented to enlighten future design of photoactive copper(I) complexes. The second section is devoted to their main areas of application (photoredox catalysis of organic reactions and polymerization, hydrogen production, photoreduction of carbon dioxide and dye-sensitized solar cells), illustrating their progression from early systems to the current state-of-the-art and showcasing how some limitations of photoactive copper(I) complexes can be overcome with their high versatility.

Copper-catalyzed deacetonative Sonogashira coupling

A convenient Pd- and phosphine-free protocol for assembling internal alkynes from tertiary propargyl alcohols and (het)aryl halides has been developed. The proposed tandem approach includes the base-promoted retro-Favorskii fragmentation followed by Cu-catalyzed C(sp)-C(sp²) cross-coupling. The use of inexpensive reagents (e.g. a catalyst, additives, a base, and a solvent) and good functional group tolerance make the procedure practical and cost-effective. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a smooth alkynylation of vinyl iodides derived from natural steroidal hormones.

Fe-Catalyzed Selective Formal Insertion of Diazo Compounds into C(sp)-C(sp3) Bonds of Propargyl Alcohols: Access to Alkyne-Substituted All-Carbon Quaternary Centers

The construction of all-carbon quaternary centers, especially those containing an alkyne-substituted framework, represents an important challenge in organic synthesis. Here we present a novel Fe-catalyzed selective formal insertion of diazo compounds into C(sp)-C(sp³) bonds of propargyl alcohols under mild conditions that enables the streamlined construction of alkyne-substituted all-carbon quaternary centers. This unique strategy starts with in situ generation of an ester group in the presence of carboxylic acids, followed by insertion of metal-carbene into C(sp)-C(sp³) bonds, which may open up a new reaction mode for exploring metal-carbene insertion into acyclic C-C bonds.

Radial Type Ring Opening of Sulfonium Salts with Dichalcogenides by Visible Light and Copper Catalysis

Herein, a copper-catalyzed, blue-light-induced free radical type ring opening of sulfonium salts with dichalcogenides has been initially developed. The developed method features an inexpensive copper catalyst and a broad substrate scope, affording practical access to alkyl chalcogenides in high yields. This reaction presents a novel ring-opening model of sulfonium salts, which breaks the limitation that only the nucleophilic ring-opening reaction could form C-heteroatom bonds and C-C bonds.

One-Metal/Two-Ligand for Dual Activation Tandem Catalysis: Photoinduced Cu-Catalyzed Anti-hydroboration of Alkynes

A dual catalyst system based on ligand exchange of two diphosphine ligands possessing different properties in a copper complex has been devised to merge metal- and photocatalytic activation modes. This strategy has been applied to the formal anti-hydroboration of activated internal alkynes via a tandem sequence in which Cu/Xantphos catalyzes the B₂pin₂-syn-hydroboration of the alkyne whereas Cu/BINAP serves as a photocatalyst for visible light-mediated isomerization of the resulting alkenyl boronic ester. Photochemical studies by means of UV–vis absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy have allowed characterizing the photoactive Cu/BINAP species in the isomerization reaction and its interaction with the intermediate syn-alkenyl boronic ester through energy transfer from the triplet excited state of the copper catalyst. In addition, mechanistic studies shed light into catalyst speciation and the interplay between the two catalytic cycles as critical success factors.

Radical Multicomponent Alkyl Alkynylation of Propellane via Synergistic Photoredox and Copper Catalysis

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) are important bioisosteres of aryl, tert-butyl groups, and internal alkynes that can impact key physicochemical properties on drug candidates. Herein, we describe a novel and efficient reaction to synthesize alkyl-alkynyl-substituted BCP derivatives by synergistic photoredox and copper catalysis at room temperature. The mild reaction conditions, simple protocol, broad functional group tolerance, and high efficiency of this procedure make it a valuable strategy for accessing alkynyl-substituted BCPs.

Visible Light-Induced Transition Metal Catalysis

In recent years, visible light-induced transition metal catalysis has emerged as a new paradigm in organic photocatalysis, which has led to the discovery of unprecedented transformations as well as the improvement of known reactions. In this subfield of photocatalysis, a transition metal complex serves a double duty by harvesting photon energy and then enabling bond forming/breaking events mostly via a single catalytic cycle, thus contrasting the established dual photocatalysis in which an exogenous photosensitizer is employed. In addition, this approach often synergistically combines catalyst-substrate interaction with photoinduced process, a feature that is uncommon in conventional photoredox chemistry. This Review describes the early development and recent advances of this emerging field.

A desulphurization strategy for Sonogashira couplings by visible light/copper catalysis

A transition-metal and photocatalyst-free, photoinduced inverse Sonogashira coupling reaction was developed. Under visible-light irradiation, the excited state iodoalkyne acted as an “alkynyl radical synthetic equivalent”.

Stereoretentive and Regioselective Selenium-catalyzed Intermolecular Propargylic C-H Amination of Alkynes

Herein we report an intermolecular propargylic C–H amination of alkynes. This reaction is operationally convenient and requires no transition metal catalysts or additives. Terminal, silyl, and internal alkynes bearing a wide range of functional groups can be aminated in high yields. The regioselectivity of amination for unsymmetrical internal alkynes is strongly influenced by substitution pattern (tertiary > secondary > primary) and by relatively remote heteroatomic substituents. We demonstrate that amination of alkynes bearing α-stereocenters occurs with retention of configuration at the newly-formed C–N bond. Competition experiments between alkynes, kinetic isotope effects, and DFT calculations are performed to confirm the mechanistic hypothesis that initial ene reaction of a selenium bis(imide) species is the rate- and product-determining step. This ene reaction has a transition state that results in substantial partial positive charge development at the carbon atom closer to the amination position. Inductive and/or hyperconjugative stabilization or destabilization of this positive charge explains the observed regioselectivities.

Selenium catalysis enables a general intermolecular propargylic C–H amination of alkynes. The concerted mechanism gives rise to high regioselectivity for the more electron-rich end of the alkyne and retention of the C–H propargylic stereocenter.

Copper-Catalyzed Difluoromethylation of Alkyl Iodides Enabled by Aryl Radical Activation of Carbon-Iodine Bonds

The engagement of unactivated alkyl halides in copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has been historically challenging, due to their low reduction potential and the slow oxidative addition of copper(I) catalysts. In this work, we report a novel strategy that leverages the halogen abstraction ability of aryl radicals, thereby engaging a diverse range of alkyl iodides in copper-catalyzed Negishi-type cross-coupling reactions at room temperature. Specifically, aryl radicals generated via copper catalysis efficiently initiate the cleavage of the carbon-iodide bonds of alkyl iodides. The alkyl radicals thus generated enter the copper catalytic cycles to couple with a difluoromethyl zinc reagent, thus furnishing the alkyl difluoromethane products. This unprecedented Negishi-type difluoromethylation approach has been applied to the late-stage modification of densely functionalized pharmaceutical agents and natural products.

Recent Advances in Visible-Light-Promoted Copper Catalysis in Organic Reactions

In recent years, visible-light-mediated copper photocatalysis has emerged as an attractive strategy for the diverse construction of basic bonds in an ecologically benign and cost-effective fashion. The intense activity in these areas has been stimulated by the distinctive properties of copper photocatalysts and has led to the rapid development and expansion of their applications. In this review, we focus on a series of significant achievements in the use of copper complexes as standalone photocatalysts in organic reactions to exhibit their high flexibility and potential in synthetic chemistry.

Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, termed metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become a mainstay in synthetic methodology over the past decade. Metallaphotoredox catalysis has combined the unparalleled capacity of transition metal catalysis for bond formation with the broad utility of photoinduced electron- and energy-transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation has allowed the engagement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes. Moreover, electron or energy transfer directly with key organometallic intermediates has provided novel activation modes entirely complementary to traditional catalytic platforms. This Review details and contextualizes the advancements in molecule construction brought forth by metallaphotocatalysis.

Photocatalytic functionalizations of alkynes

Visible light mediated functionalizations have significantly expanded the scope of alkynes by unraveling new mechanistic pathways and enabling their transformation to diverse structural entities. The photoredox reactions on alkynes rely on their innate capability to generate myriad carbon-centred radicals via single electron transfer (SET), thereby, allowing the introduction of new radical precursors. Moreover, an array of methods have been developed facilitating transformations such as vicinal or gem-difunctionalization, annulation, cycloaddition and oxidative reactions to construct numerous key building blocks of natural and pharmaceutically important molecules. In addition, the introduction of photoredox chemistry has successfully been used to deal with the challenges associated with alkyne functionalization such as stereoselective and regioselective control. This article accounts for several visible light mediated functionalization reactions of alkynes, wherein they have been transformed into α-oxo compounds, β-keto sulfoxides, substituted olefins, N-heterocycles, internal alkynes and sulfur containing compounds. The article has been primarily categorized into various sections based on the reaction type with particular attention being paid to mechanistic details, advancement and future applications.

Visible-light-mediated copper photocatalysis for organic syntheses

Photoredox catalysis has been applied to renewable energy and green chemistry for many years. Ruthenium and iridium, which can be used as photoredox catalysts, are expensive and scarce in nature. Thus, the further development of catalysts based on these transition metals is discouraged. Alternative photocatalysts based on copper complexes are widely investigated, because they are abundant and less expensive. This review discusses the scope and application of photoinduced copper-based catalysis along with recent progress in this field. The special features and mechanisms of copper photocatalysis and highlights of the applications of the copper complexes to photocatalysis are reported. Copper-photocatalyzed reactions, including alkene and alkyne functionalization, organic halide functionalization, and alkyl C-H functionalization that have been reported over the past 5 years, are included.

Nickel-catalyzed deaminative Sonogashira coupling of alkylpyridinium salts enabled by NN2 pincer ligand

Alkynes are amongst the most valuable functional groups in organic chemistry and widely used in chemical biology, pharmacy, and materials science. However, the preparation of alkyl-substituted alkynes still remains elusive. Here, we show a nickel-catalyzed deaminative Sonogashira coupling of alkylpyridinium salts. Key to the success of this coupling is the development of an easily accessible and bench-stable amide-type pincer ligand. This ligand allows naturally abundant alkyl amines as alkylating agents in Sonogashira reactions, and produces diverse alkynes in excellent yields under mild conditions. Salient merits of this chemistry include broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, one-pot transformation, versatile late-stage derivatizations as well as the use of inexpensive pre-catalyst and readily available substrates. The high efficiency and strong practicability bode well for the widespread applications of this strategy in constructing functional molecules, materials, and fine chemicals.

Enabling the Use of Alkyl Thianthrenium Salts in Cross-Coupling Reactions by Copper Catalysis

Alkyl groups are one of the most widely used groups in organic synthesis. Here, a a series of thianthrenium salts have been synthesized that act as reliable alkylation reagents and readily engage in copper-catalyzed Sonogashira reactions to build C(sp³ )-C(sp) bonds under mild photochemical conditions. Diverse alkyl thianthrenium salts, including methyl and disubstituted thianthrenium salts, are employed with great functional breadth, since sensitive Cl, Br, and I atoms, which are poorly tolerated in conventional approaches, are compatible. The generality of the developed alkyl reagents has also been demonstrated in copper-catalyzed Kumada reactions.

Aryl Radical Activation of C-O Bonds: Copper-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Difluoromethylation of Alcohols

Given their ubiquity in natural products and pharmaceuticals, alcohols represent one of the most attractive starting materials for the construction of C-C bonds. We report herein the first catalytic strategy to harness the reactivity of aryl radicals for the activation of C-O bonds in alcohol-derived xanthate esters, allowing for the discovery of the first catalytic deoxygenative difluoromethylation reaction. Under copper-catalyzed conditions, a wide variety of alkyl xanthate esters, readily synthesized from alcohol feedstocks, were activated by catalytically generated aryl radicals and were converted to the alkyl-difluoromethane products via alkyl radical intermediates. This scalable protocol exhibits a broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance, enabling late-stage modification of complex pharmaceutical agents. A one-pot protocol has been developed that allows for the direct use of free alcohols without purification of the xanthate esters. Mechanistic studies are consistent with the hypothesis of aryl radicals being formed and initiating the cleavage of the C-O bonds of xanthate esters, to generate alkyl radicals as the key intermediates. This aryl radical activation approach represents a new strategy for the activation of alcohols as cross-coupling partners.

Twofold Radical-Based Synthesis of N,C-Difunctionalized Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentylamines (BCPAs) are of growing importance to the pharmaceutical industry as sp³-rich bioisosteres of anilines and N-tert-butyl groups. Here we report a facile synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted BCPAs using a twofold radical functionalization strategy. Sulfonamidyl radicals, generated through fragmentation of α-iodoaziridines, undergo initial addition to [1.1.1]propellane to afford iodo-BCPAs; the newly formed C-I bond in these products is then functionalized via a silyl-mediated Giese reaction. This chemistry also translates smoothly to 1,3-disubstituted iodo-BCPs. A wide variety of radical acceptors and iodo-BCPAs are accommodated, providing straightforward access to an array of valuable aniline-like isosteres.

Rhodium-terpyridine Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Aromatic Nitro Compounds in Water

A rhodium terpyridine complex catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines with i-PrOH as hydrogen source and water as solvent has been developed. The catalytic system can work at a substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratio of 2000, with a turnover frequency (TOF) up to 3360 h^-1 , which represents one of the most active catalytic transfer hydrogenation systems for nitroarene reduction. The catalytic system is operationally simple and the protocol could be scaled up to 20 gram scale. The water-soluble catalyst bearing a carboxyl group could be recycled 15 times without significant loss of activity.

Photo-induced copper-catalyzed alkynylation and amination of remote unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds

A method for remote radical C-H alkynylation and amination of diverse aliphatic alcohols has been developed. The reaction features a copper nucleophile complex formed in situ as a photocatalyst, which reduces the silicon-tethered aliphatic iodide to an alkyl radical to initiate 1,n-hydrogen atom transfer. Unactivated secondary and tertiary C-H bonds at β, γ, and δ positions can be functionalized in a predictable manner.

Three-Coordinate Copper(II) Alkynyl Complex in C-C Bond Formation: The Sesquicentennial of the Glaser Coupling

Copper(II) alkynyl species are proposed as key intermediates in numerous Cu-catalyzed C-C coupling reactions. Supported by a β-diketiminate ligand, the three-coordinate copper(II) alkynyl [Cu^II]-C≡CAr (Ar = 2,6-Cl₂C₆H₃) forms upon reaction of the alkyne H-C≡CAr with the copper(II) tert-butoxide complex [Cu^II]-O^tBu. In solution, this [Cu^II]-C≡CAr species cleanly transforms to the Glaser coupling product ArC≡C-C≡CAr and [Cu^I](solvent). Addition of nucleophiles R'C≡C-Li (R' = aryl, silyl) and Ph-Li to [Cu^II]-C≡CAr affords the corresponding C_sp-C_sp and C_sp-C_sp2 coupled products RC≡C-C≡CAr and Ph-C≡CAr with concomitant generation of [Cu^I](solvent) and {[Cu^I]-C≡CAr}^-, respectively. Supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, redox disproportionation forms [Cu^III](C≡CAr)(R) species that reductively eliminate R-C≡CAr products. [Cu^II]-C≡CAr also captures the trityl radical Ph₃C· to give Ph₃C-C≡CAr. Radical capture represents the key C_sp-C_sp3 bond-forming step in the copper-catalyzed C-H functionalization of benzylic substrates R-H with alkynes H-C≡CR' (R' = (hetero)aryl, silyl) that provide C_sp-C_sp3 coupled products R-C≡CR via radical relay with ^tBuOO^tBu as oxidant.

Generation of Alkyl Radicals: From the Tyranny of Tin to the Photon Democracy

Alkyl radicals are key intermediates in organic synthesis. Their classic generation from alkyl halides has a severe drawback due to the employment of toxic tin hydrides to the point that "flight from the tyranny of tin" in radical processes was considered for a long time an unavoidable issue. This review summarizes the main alternative approaches for the generation of unstabilized alkyl radicals, using photons as traceless promoters. The recent development in photochemical and photocatalyzed processes enabled the discovery of a plethora of new alkyl radical precursors, opening the world of radical chemistry to a broader community, thus allowing a new era of photon democracy.
