Pb 2 BO 3 I: A Borate Iodide with the Largest Second‐Harmonic Generation (SHG) Response in the KBe 2 BO 3 F 2 (KBBF) Family of Nonlinear Optical (NLO) Materials

From Pb6(HPO3)(H2PO3)Cl9 to Pb6(HPO3)2Br8(H2O)·H2O: Halogen Regulation to Achieve Inorganic Metal Phosphite Halide Nonlinear Optical Material with Unprecedented Pb-Centered Polyhedral Units

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are widely used in various fields. The introduction of lone-pair cations is regarded as an effective strategy to explore NLO crystals. In this work, two novel lead phosphite halides, centrosymmetric Pb6(HPO3)(H2PO3)Cl9 and noncentrosymmetric Pb6(HPO3)2Br8(H2O)·H2O, were obtained via a hydrothermal method. Pb6(HPO3)(H2PO3)Cl9 is the first reported lone-pair metal phosphite with two kinds of phosphite groups (HPO32- and H2PO3-) and Pb6(HPO3)2Br8(H2O)·H2O is the first inorganic NLO phosphite halide with a phase-matchable SHG effect of 1.02 × KDP. In addition, the Pb-centered polyhedral units of PbOCl4, PbOCl6, PbO2Cl5, PbO2Br5, PbOBr6, and PbO3(H2O)Br3 in these two structures have never been reported before. An in-depth study on the structure-property relationship of the two compounds with halogen substitution is also performed.

An Unprecedented [BO2]-Based Deep-Ultraviolet Transparent Nonlinear Optical Crystal by Superhalogen Substitution

Solid-state structures with the superhalogen [BO2]- have thus far only been observed with a few compounds whose syntheses require high reaction temperatures and complicated procedures, while their optical properties remain almost completely unexplored. Herein, we report a facile, energy-efficient synthesis of the first [BO2]-based deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) transparent oxide K9[B4O5(OH)4]3(CO3)(BO2) ⋅ 7H2O (KBCOB). Detailed structural characterization and analysis confirm that KBCOB possesses a rare four-in-one three-dimensional quasi-honeycomb framework, with three π-conjugated anions ([BO2]-, [BO3]3-, and [CO3]2-) and one non-π-conjugated anion ([BO4]5-) in the one crystal. The evolution from the traditional halogenated nonlinear optical (NLO) analogues to KBCOB by superhalogen [BO2]- substitution confers deep-UV transparency (<190 nm), a large second-harmonic generation response (1.0×KH2PO4 @ 1064 nm), and a 15-fold increase in birefringence. This study affords a new route to the facile synthesis of functional [BO2]-based oxides, paving the way for the development of next-generation high-performing deep-UV NLO materials.

Recent advances in rational structure design for nonlinear optical crystals: leveraging advantageous templates

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can expand the spectral range of laser outputs have attracted significant attention for their optoelectronic applications. The research progress from the discovery of new single crystal structures to the realization of final device applications involves many key steps and is very time consuming and challenging. Consequently, exploring efficient design strategies to shorten the research period and accelerate the rational design of novel NLO materials has become imperative to address the pressing demand for advanced materials. The recent shift in paradigm toward exploring new NLO crystals involves significant progress from extensive "trial and error" methodologies to strategic approaches. This review proposes the concept of rational structure design for nonlinear optical crystals leveraging advantageous templates. It further discusses their optical characteristics, promising applications as second-order NLO materials, and the relationship between their structure and performance, and highlights urgent issues that need to be addressed in the field of NLO crystals in the future. The review aims to provide ideas and driving impetus to encourage researchers to achieve new breakthroughs in the next generation of NLO materials.

Two Short-Wave UV Beryllium Selenites Exhibiting Diverse Optical Properties Stemming from Functional Group Arrangements

The arrangement of functional groups exerts a crucial role in determining the characteristics of compounds. In this study, we synthesized two novel short-wave ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals: KBe2(SeO3)2(OH)·H2O and K2Be(SeO3)2. Interestingly, the two compounds show the same SeO3 triangular pyramids and K-O polyhedra. However, the two compounds exhibit distinct beryllium-oxygen anion groups: BeO3(OH) for KBe2(SeO3)2(OH)·H2O and BeO4 for K2Be(SeO3)2. This results in the SeO3 groups within the structure having different orientations, ultimately leading to the two compounds exhibiting completely different optical properties. KBe2(SeO3)2(OH)·H2O displays a large second harmonic generation (SHG) effect equivalent to 2× KH2PO4 (KDP), coupled with a large birefringence of 0.078 at 546 nm. In contrast, the SHG effect and birefringence of K2Be(SeO3)2 are only 0.33× that of KDP and 0.024 at 546 nm, respectively. Structural analyses and theoretical calculations indicate that these pronounced differences in optical properties stem from variations in the arrangement of the SeO3 functional groups. This study not only sheds light on the correlation between crystal structure and optical behavior but also presents a hopeful avenue for the advancement of materials in the short-wave UV spectrum.

Hydrogen bonding bolstered head-to-tail ligation of functional chromophores in a 0D SbF3·glycine adduct for a short-wave ultraviolet nonlinear optical material

The key properties of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials highly rely on the quality of functional chromophores (FCs) and their optimized interarrangement in the lattice. Despite the screening of various FCs, significant challenges persist in optimizing their arrangement within specific structures. Generally, FC alignment is achieved by designing negatively charged 2D layers or 3D frameworks, further regulated by templating cations. In this study, a novel 0D adduct NLO material, SbF3·glycine, is reported. Neutrally charged 0D [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs, comprising [SbF3] pyramids and zwitterionic glycine, are well-aligned in the structure. The alignment is facilitated by the hydrogen bonding, reinforcing a 'head-to-tail' ligation of [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs. Consequently, the title compound exhibits favorable NLO properties, including a large second-harmonic generation efficiency (3.6 × KDP) and suitable birefringence (cal. 0.057 @ 1064 nm). Additionally, its short absorption cut-off edge (231 nm) positions it as a promising short-wave ultraviolet NLO material. Importantly, the binary SbF3-amino acid system is expected to serve as a new resource for exploring ultraviolet NLO crystals, owing to the abundance of the amino acid family.

1D Cu(I)-based chiral organic-inorganic hybrid material with second harmonic generation and circular polarized luminescence

In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid materials have demonstrated exceptional performance in nonlinear optics, attracting widespread attention. However, there are relatively few examples of coordination compounds synthesized with Cu as the metal center that exhibit excellent nonlinear optical properties. In this study, we successfully synthesized a pair of enantiomers named R/S-Cu2I2 by reacting chiral ligands with CuI. The crystal structure reveals a one-dimensional copper-iodide chain structure built by Cu2I2 clusters, and its ordered arrangement in space provides not only a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) signal (1.24 × KDP) but also a large birefringence (0.15@1064 nm). Under excitation at 395 nm, the crystals exhibit red fluorescence peaked at 675 nm. The CD spectra of R/S-Cu2I2 show a distinct mirror-symmetric Cotton effect, and their CPL signals are corresponding and opposite in the emission range, with a maximum glum of approximately ±2.5 × 10-3. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory were also carried out to enhance our understanding of the correlation between their structures and optical properties.

Anhydrous Aluminum Iodate: Strong Second Harmonic Generation Effect Contributed by Unbonded and Antibonding Orbitals

Exploring materials that balance the second harmonic generation (SHG) effect and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is the frontier of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal research at present. In this work, the NLO property of anhydrous aluminum iodate is extensively explored and discussed first. It exhibits a strong SHG intensity of 18.3 × KH2PO4 (KDP) and a high-powder LIDT of 1.4 × KDP at 1064 nm. Combining experimental and theoretical studies at the atomic level and electronic levels, it is found that the cations in the structure are replaced by cations with small radius and high valence, enabling the production of materials with large SHG responses. Unbonded and antibonding orbitals play a crucial positive role in the SHG response of the structure, whereas bonding orbitals produce a large negative contribution. This provides a scarce example of materials in which bonding orbitals make significant negative contributions.

Pb3[O10Pb20](SiO4)4X10 (X = Cl, Br): The First Pb-Containing Halogen Silicates with Mirror-Symmetric Pseudo-Aurivillius Bilayers

Two new congruently melting Pb-containing halogen silicates, Pb3[O10Pb20](SiO4)4X10 (X = Cl, Br), have been synthesized using a high-temperature solution method. Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmca. In both structures, the mirror-symmetric bilayer composed of Pb-O polyhedra is observed for the first time in Pb-containing silicates and belongs to α-PbO derivatives and is related to the Aurivillius phase. Thermal behavior analysis, UV-vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, and IR spectroscopy were also performed. The Pb3[O10Pb20](SiO4)4Cl10 matrix was doped with Eu3+ ions as a dopant, and its potential application in fluorescence was confirmed from the resulting orange-red emission.

Electron transfer-mediated synergistic nonlinear optical response in the Agn@C18 (n = 4-6) complexes: A DFT study on the electronic structures and optical characteristics

Seeking highly efficient and stable non-linear optical (NLO) materials is crucial yet challenging, given their promising applications in laser diodes and photovoltaics. In this study, we employ the excess electron and charge transfer strategies to theoretically design three novel complexes, namely Agn@C18 (n = 4-6), by adsorbing silver clusters onto the cyclo[18]carbon ring (C18). Our aim is to investigate the NLO characteristics of these complexes using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. The results reveal that the adsorption of Ag clusters onto C18 leads to a decrease in excitation energy and an increase in dipole moment and oscillator strengths, thereby significantly enhancing the hyperpolarizability of the complexes. Strikingly, among all these complexes, Ag6@C18 exhibits the highest first hyperpolarizability value of approximately 109496.2620 au calculated at the B3LYP/cc-PVDZ-pp level of theory, which is about 1.3 × 106 times higher than that of pure C18. This finding validates the effectiveness of the proposed strategies in enhancing the NLO response of the species. Moreover, the calculated UV-Vis absorption spectrum demonstrates that the Agn@C18 complexes with excess electrons exhibit absorption at longer wavelengths (ranging from 385 to 731 nm) compared to C18. In addition, the stability, chemical bonding, and charge transfer characteristics of the Agn@C18 (n = 4-6) complexes were also discussed. These findings highlight the potential of these complexes for the development of highly efficient NLO devices.

Investigation of nonlinear optical properties in α-A2BB'O6 (A = Li, Na, K; B = Ti, Zr, Hf; B' = Se, Te) by first-principles calculations

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals based on oxides typically have wide bandgaps and large laser damage thresholds (LDTs), which are important for generating high-power and continuous terahertz radiation. Recently, a new family of NLO materials α-A2BB'O6 including Li2TiTeO6 (LTTO) with a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of 26 × KH2PO4 (KDP) and a large LDT of 550 MW cm-2 were reported. Herein, we systematically study the electronic structures and NLO properties of α-A2BB'O6 (A = Li, Na, K; B = Ti, Zr, Hf; B' = Se, Te) to explore the relationship between the structure and SHG coefficient. First, 15 members of the A2BB'O6 family are demonstrated to be highly stable and NLO materials, excluding K2TiTeO6, K2TiSeO6 and K2ZrSeO6. Then, the electronic band structure, dipole moment and distortion of BO6/B'O6 octahedrons, SHG coefficient and terahertz absorption spectrum are calculated comprehensively with the element variation of A-site, B-site and B'-site. Finally, the magnitude of the SHG coefficient is found to be directly proportional to the value of total dipole moment and distortion, and inversely proportional to the bandgap value. Most importantly, among the A2BB'O6 materials, K2HfSeO6 shows the smallest direct bandgap of 2.99 eV, the largest SHG coefficient d33 of about 5 × LTTO and low terahertz absorbance from 0.1 to 9 THz. Our results provide new NLO crystals that may have potential application in terahertz radiation sources and other nonlinear electronics.

Sb4O5I2: Enhancing Birefringence through Optimization of Sb/I Ratio for Alignment of Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs

Birefringent crystals are the key components of functional optics, contributing significantly to scientific and technological advancements. To enhance birefringence, the presence of stereochemically active lone pairs offers a unique opportunity. In fact, strengthening the stereochemical activity and aligning uniformly lone pairs face tough challenges. Herein, an anisotropic layered crystal, Sb4O5I2, is discovered to exhibit enhanced birefringence. The influence of crystal symmetry on the birefringence of Sb4O5X2 (X = Cl, Br, or I) is found to be minor. Instead, the asymmetric nature of ABUCBs (i.e., cis-X3[SbO3]6- and cis-X3[SbO4]8-) plays a crucial role in enhancing the optical anisotropy. And the orientation of these ABUCBs is equally important. We demonstrate that by adjusting the Sb/I ratio from 5:1 to 2:1, all of the intralayer Sb atoms in Sb5O7I-P63 are forced onto the surface position. This structural adjustment leads to strengthened ionic bonding interactions, enhanced activity of the lone pairs, and uniform alignments of the ABUCBs in Sb4O5I2. Consequently, this results in a 6-fold increase in birefringence.

From NaGa(IO3)3F to NaGa(IO3)2F2 and NaGa(IO3)4: The Effects of Chemical Substitution between F- Anions and IO3- Groups on the Structures and Properties of Gallium Iodates

Introducing F- anions or substituting F- anions with IO3- groups has been proven to be ideal strategies for designing novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar materials, yet systematic investigation into the effect of F- anions or the substitution of IO3- for F- anions on structures and properties remains rarely explored. Herein, two new gallium iodates, NaGa(IO3)2F2 (1) and NaGa(IO3)4 (2), were successfully designed and synthesized based on NaGa(IO3)3F by introducing more F- anions and replacing F- anions with IO3 groups, respectively. Structurally, in compound 1, the adjacent [GaF3(IO3)3]3- polyanions are connected in an antiparallel manner, resulting in a complete cancellation of local polarity. While in compound 2, all IO3 groups in 2D [Ga(IO3)4]∞- layers are aligned, leading to large macroscopic polarization. Additionally, chemical substitution also results in a qualitative improvement in the functional properties of compound 2. It possesses strong SHG response (12 × KDP @1064 nm) and broad optical transparency, coupled with large birefringence (0.21 @1064 nm), showcasing its promise as a promising nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal. The effects of chemical substitution between F- anions and IO3- groups on the structures and properties are discussed in detail.

(C(NH2)3)2(I2O5F)(IO3)(H2O) and C(NH2)3IO2F2: Two Guanidine Fluorooxoiodates with Wide Band Gap and Large Birefringence

Enhancing anisotropy through an effective synergistic arrangement of anionic and cationic groups is crucial for improving the birefringence optical properties of materials. In this work, by transforming I-O into I-F through the fluorination strategy, two metal-free guanidine fluorooxoiodates (C(NH2)3)2(I2O5F)(IO3)(H2O) and C(NH2)3IO2F2 and one guanidine iodate C(NH2)3IO3 were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. An unprecedented dimer [I2O5F] formed by [IO3F] and [IO3] in (C(NH2)3)2(I2O5F)(IO3)(H2O) was found, which greatly enriches the structural diversity of fluorooxoiodates. All three compounds feature a relatively large birefringence (Δn = 0.068, 0.110 and 0.075 at 546 nm) and a short ultraviolet cutoff edge. The theoretical calculation was carried out to understand the electronic structures and linear optical properties.

Cd8(BO3)4SiO4: Metal Cation Inducing the Formation of Isolated [BO3] and [SiO4] Units in Borate Silicate

The first compound of cadmium-borate silicate Cd8(BO3)4SiO4, crystallizing in space group P42/n (no. 86), has been successfully synthesized by the conventional high-temperature solution method and melts congruently. The zero-dimensional anionic groups of Cd8(BO3)4SiO4 are isolated [BO3] triangles and isolated [SiO4] tetrahedra which are filled in the framework formed by [CdO6] polyhedra. It has a moderate birefringence (Δn = 0.053 at 546 nm), which is measured by experiment and evaluated by first-principles calculations; meanwhile, the source of birefringence is revealed through the response electronic distribution anisotropy method. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum indicates that Cd8(BO3)4SiO4 possesses a wide optical transparency range, with a UV cutoff edge at about 254 nm. This work enriches the structure chemistry of borate silicates, and we discussed the possible methods for the exploration and synthesis of novel optical crystals possessing zero-dimensional anionic groups in the borate silicate system.

C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O and BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2: Two Oxalate Chlorides Obtained by Chemical Scissors Strategy Exhibiting Low-Dimensional Structural Networks and Balanced Overall Optical Properties

Low-dimensional crystalline materials have attracted much attention due to their special physical and chemical properties. Herein, two new oxalate chlorides, C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O and BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2, were synthesized. C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O presents the unique {[Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)]-}∞ zigzag chain, while BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2 shows a novel {[Cd(C2O4)1.5Cl]2-}∞ layer. They showed large measured band gaps, which were 3.76 and 4.53 eV, respectively, and the latter was the largest band gap in the A-M-C2O4-X (A = Monovalent cationic or alkaline earth metals, X = F, Cl, Br, I) family. They exhibit a large calculated birefringence of 0.075 and 0.096 at 1064 nm, respectively. This study promotes the exploration of synthesizing low-dimensional crystalline materials with balanced overall optical performances by a chemical scissors strategy.

K(NH4)Zn2(PO4)2: a Beryllium-Free Sr2Be2B2O7 Derivative with Enhanced Interlayer Connectivity

A novel zinc phosphate derivative of Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO), K(NH4)Zn2(PO4)2 (KNZP), featuring [Zn2P2O8]∞2- double layers akin to the [Be2B2O7]∞4- layers in SBBO, was successfully synthesized via a moderate hydrothermal method. Through the substitution of BeO4 and BO3 with ZnO4 and PO4, the issue of toxicity has been effectively resolved, while the enhanced interlayer interactions facilitated by covalent and hydrogen bonding in KNZP overcome the inherent structural instability. Notably, KNZP exhibits a wide transparent window and a moderate second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, reaching 0.7 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), rendering it type-I phase-matchable, indicating that it is a promising UV nonlinear optical (NLO) material.

LiGa(IO3 )4 : An Excellent NLO Material with Unprecedented 2D [Ga(IO3 )4 ]∞ - Layer Synthesized by Aliovalent Substitution

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the solid-state lasers for their ability to expand wavelength spectral to the regions where the directing lasing is difficult or even impossible, yet the rational design of a high-performance NLO crystal remains a great challenge owing to the severe structural and properties' requirements. Herein, a new noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar gallium iodate, LiGa(IO3 )4 , with a novel 2D anionic layer, is successfully designed and synthesized by the aliovalent substitution strategy based on classic α-LiIO3 . The 2D [Ga(IO3 )4 ]∞ - layer in LiGa(IO3 )4 is built from the GaO6 octahedra and highly polarizable units IO3 . Compared with its parent compound, the partial replacement of A-site Li+ cation with main group Ga3+ cation facilitates LiGa(IO3 )4 to possess excellent NLO properties, including the large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (14 × KH2 PO4 (KDP) @ 1064 nm), wide bandgap (4.25 eV), large birefringence (0.23 @ 1064 nm), and wide optical transparency from UV to mid-IR. These reveal that LiGa(IO3 )4 will be a promising NLO crystal.

Three-dimensional porous borocarbonitride composed of pentagonal motifs as a high-performance pyroelectric material

Pyroelectric materials have been attracting significant attention due to their intrinsic and permanent polarization, where the induced polarization is not associated with specific conditions, such as ferroelectric phase transition, strain gradient, dopants, and electric field. Thus, these materials have great potential for wide applications in energy conversion. Here, we propose a new 3D porous borocarbonitride termed PH-BCN, which is composed of pentagonal motifs with intrinsic polarization along the [0001] direction. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that PH-BCN possesses a record high longitudinal electromechanical coupling coefficient with the value of k33 = 97.99%, a remarkably strong SHG response (χ(2)xzx(0) = χ(2)yzy(0) = χ(2)zxx(0) = χ(2)zyy(0) = -6.23 pm V-1 and χ(2)zzz(0) = 21.21 pm V-1), and a record high shift current value of 908.58 μA V-2 due to the intrinsic vertical polarization. This study expands the family of pentagon-based materials, and may open a new frontier in the design of high-performance pyroelectric materials as well.

KMB4O6F3 (M = Co, Fe): two-dimensional magnetic fluorooxoborates with triangular lattices directed by triangular BO3 units

Frustrated magnetic systems are of great interest owing to their spin liquid state for application in quantum computing. However, experimentally, spin liquid has not been realized. Thus, experimental explorations of frustrated magnetic systems including triangular lattices are still urgent, particularly for directed synthesis compared to random exploration. Herein, for the first time, directed by the use of a triangular unit of the BO3 anion group, two novel layered magnetic fluorooxoborates KMB4O6F3 (M = Co 1, Fe 2) with triangular lattices have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the P21/c space group with layered magnetic triangular lattices, which are further separated by K+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility curves of both 1 and 2 show no λ-anomaly peak down to a low temperature of 2 K in the absence of a magnetic long-range ordering transition, which are further confirmed by the heat capacity results. The magnetic-field dependence of magnetization at 2 K shows saturation of 2.20μB for 1 and 4.24μB for 2, respectively, at 7 T, after roughly subtracting the Van Vleck paramagnetic contribution. Further in-depth investigation of the underlying physics at a lower temperature below 2 K would be subsequently performed. Moreover, thermal stability and FT-IR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy with optical bandgap properties are also reported. Most importantly, our work provides a promising method to experimentally realize specific magnetic lattices (e.g. triangular lattices) directed by the use of triangular groups (e.g. BO3) as the functional unit.

Cd2 Nb2 Te4 O15 : A Novel Pseudo-Aurivillius-Type Tellurite with Unprecedented Nonlinear Optical Properties and Excellent Stability

Oxides are emerging candidates for mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, their intrinsically weak second harmonic generation (SHG) effects hinder their further development. A major design challenge is to increase the nonlinear coefficient while maintaining the broad mid-IR transmission and high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the oxides. In this study, it is reported on a polar NLO tellurite, Cd2 Nb2 Te4 O15 (CNTO), featuring a pseudo-Aurivillius-type perovskite layered structure composed of three types of NLO active groups, including CdO6 octahedra, NbO6 octahedra, and TeO4 seesaws. The uniform orientation of the distorted units induces a giant SHG response that is ≈31 times larger than that of KH2 PO4 , the largest value among all reported metal tellurites. Additionally, CNTO exhibits a large band gap (3.75 eV), a wide optical transparency window (0.33-14.5 µm), superior birefringence (0.12@ 546 nm), high LIDT (23 × AgGaS2 ), and strong acid and alkali resistance, indicating its potential as a promising mid-IR NLO material.

Centrosymmetric Rb2Sb(C2O4)2.5(H2O)3 and Noncentrosymmetric RbSb2(C2O4)F5: Two Antimony (III) Oxalates as UV Optical Materials

Herein, we have successfully synthesized two rubidium antimony (III) oxalates, namely, Rb2Sb(C2O4)2.5(H2O)3 and RbSb2(C2O4)F5, utilizing a low-temperature hydrothermal method. These two compounds share a similar chemical composition, consisting of Sb3+ cations with active lone pair electrons, alkali metal Rb+ ions, and planar π-conjugated C2O42- anions. However, they exhibit different symmetries, Rb2Sb(C2O4)2.5(H2O)3 is centrosymmetric (CS), while RbSb2(C2O4)F5 is noncentrosymmetric (NCS), which should be caused by the presence of F- ions. Notably, the NCS compound, RbSb2(C2O4)F5, demonstrates a moderate second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, approximately 1.3 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), and exhibits a large birefringence of 0.09 at 546 nm. These characteristics indicate that RbSb2(C2O4)F5 holds promising potential as a nonlinear optical material for ultraviolet (UV) applications. Detailed structural analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that the excellent optical properties arise from the synergistic effects between Sb3+ cations with SCALP and planar π-conjugated [C2O4]2- groups.

Unveiling the Superior Optical Properties of Novel Melamine-Based Nonlinear Optical Material with Strong Second-Harmonic Generation and Giant Optical Anisotropy

Two melamine-based metal halides, (C₃ N₆ H₇ )(C₃ N₆ H₆ )HgCl₃ (I) and (C₃ N₆ H₇ )₃ HgCl₅ (II), are synthesized by incorporating the heavy d¹⁰ cation, Hg²⁺ , and the halide anion, Cl^- . The noncentrosymmetric structure of I results from two unique attributes: large asymmetric secondary building units produced by direct covalent coordination of melamine to Hg²⁺ and a small dihedral angle between melamine molecules. The former makes inorganic modules locally acentric, while the latter prevents planar organic groups from forming deleterious antiparallel arrangement. The unique coordination in I results in an enlarged band gap of 4.40 eV. Due to the large polarizability of the heavy Hg²⁺ cation and the π-conjugated system of melamine, I exhibits a strong second-harmonic generation efficiency of 5 × KH₂ PO₄ , larger than any reported melamine-based nonlinear optical materials to date. Density functional theory calculations indicate that I possesses giant optical anisotropy, with a birefringence of 0.246@1064 nm.

Two Mixed-Alkali-Metal Selenates as Short-Wave Ultraviolet Nonlinear-Optical Materials

Two novel mixed-alkali-metal selenate nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals, Na₃Li(H₂O)₃(SeO₄)₂·3H₂O (I) and CsLi₃(H₂O)(SeO₄)₂ (II), have been successfully synthesized by an aqueous solution evaporation method. Both compounds feature the unique layers constructed of the same functional moieties including SeO₄ and LiO₄ tetrahedra: [Li(H₂O)₃(SeO₄)₂·3H₂O]_∞^3- layers in I and [Li₃(H₂O)(SeO₄)₂]_∞^- layers in II. The titled compounds display wide optical band gaps of 5.62 and 5.66 eV, respectively, according to the UV-vis spectra. Interestingly, they exhibit significantly different second-order nonlinear coefficients (0.34 × KDP and 0.70 × KDP, respectively). Detailed dipole moment calculations manifest that the large disparity can be attributed to the difference in the dipole moment of the crystallographically independent SeO₄ and LiO₄ groups. This work confirms that alkali-metal selenate system is an excellent candidate for short-wave ultraviolet NLO materials.

SbI3·3S8: A Novel Promising Inorganic Adducts Crystal for Second Harmonic Generation

In the past twenty years, the basic investigation of innovative Non-Linear Optical (NLO) crystals has received significant attention, which has built the crucial heritage for the use of NLO materials. Fundamental research is essential given the scarcity of materials for NLO compounds, especially in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) and middle- and far-infrared (MFIR) regions. In the present work, we synthesized high-quality MFIR SbI₃·3S₈ NLO crystals having a length in the range of 1-5 mm through rapid facile liquid phase ultrasonic reaction followed by the assistance of instantaneous natural evaporation phenomenon of the solvent at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results ratify the hexagonal R3m structure of SbI₃·3S₈ crystal, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) demonstrates that the elemental composition of SbI₃·3S₈ crystal is similar to that of its theoretical composition. The direct and indirect forbidden energy gaps of SbI₃·3S₈ were measured from the optical transmittance spectra and they were shown to be 2.893 eV and 1.986 eV, respectively. The green sparkling signal has been observed from the crystal during the second harmonic generation (SHG) experiment. Therefore, as inorganic adducts are often explored as NLO crystals, this work on the MFIR SbI₃·3S₈ NLO crystal can bring about additional investigations on this hot topic in the near future.

Noncentrosymmetric versus Centrosymmetric: Halogen Induced Variable Coordination Modes of Sn2+ and Structural Transition in Sn3B3O7X (X = Cl and Br)

Two new borate halides, Sn₃B₃O₇X (X = Cl and Br), were successfully synthesized via introducing Sn²⁺ with lone-pair and halogen into borate. Interestingly, halogen-induced variable coordination modes of Sn²⁺ and anion frameworks make them crystallize in different space groups, from noncentrosymmetric (Pna2₁) to centrosymmetric (Pbca). Sn₃B₃O₇Cl possesses an SHG response of about 0.5 times that of KDP, while Sn₃B₃O₇Br exhibits a large birefringence (0.123@1064 nm). The theoretical calculations were performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships.

Ag4B7O12X (X = Cl, Br, I) Heptaborate Family: Comprehensive Crystal Chemistry, Thermal Stability Trends, Topology, and Vibrational Anharmonicity

Using glass crystallization and solid-state techniques, we were able to complete the family of salt-inclusion silver halide borates, Ag₄B₇O₁₂X, by the X = Cl and I members. The new compounds are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, single-crystal and high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. In all structures, the silver atoms exhibit strong anharmonicity of thermal vibrations, which could be modeled using Gram-Charlier expansion, and its asymmetry was characterized by the skewness vector. The topology of the silver halide and borate sublattices has been analyzed separately for the first time. Along the I → Br → Cl series, we observe a decrease of the melting point and configuration entropy and an increase of thermal expansion and its anisotropy and thermal vibration anharmonicity, which indicates decreasing stability.

A Cation-Driven Approach toward Deep-Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Materials

The design of new materials with special performances is still a great challenge, especially for the deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical materials in which it is difficult to balance large bandgaps and strong second harmonic generation responses due to their inverse relationship. Cation variation not only influences the whole structure frameworks but also directly participates in the formation of electronic structures, both of which could lead to the uncontrollability of the properties of the designed materials. Here, a novel approach, aiming at purposeful and foreseeable material designs, is proposed to characterize the role of cations. By the verification of several series of borates, the influences of cation variation on property changes are explored systematically. Accordingly, a feasible strategy of designing deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical materials by substituting barium for lead has been concluded, which could obviously blue-shift the ultraviolet cutoff edge and maintain the relatively strong second harmonic generation response (more than 2 times of KH₂PO₄), achieving the property optimization, and especially works efficiently in fluorooxoborates. The property optimization design strategy and the cation characterization method are not only helpful in exploring nonlinear optical materials but also enlightening in material design and selection.

SbHPO3F: 2D van der Waals Layered Phosphite Exhibiting Large Birefringence

A novel antimony(III)-based phosphite, SbHPO₃F, featuring a unique two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered structure, has been successfully designed and synthesized via the simultaneous employment of optically active moieties including SbO₃F seesaw and tetrahedral HPO₃ groups. Its optimized layered arrangement formed by the alternating connection of 4-membered rings (4-MRs) and 8-MRs endows the title compound with desirable optical properties including a large birefringence and short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge, implying that it is a potential UV birefringent material.

(C3N6H7)2SbF5·H2O Exhibiting Strong Optical Anisotropy from the Optimal Arrangement of π-Conjugated (C3N6H7)+ Groups

An antimony fluoride melamine birefringent crystal, (C₃N₆H₇)₂SbF₅·H₂O, was obtained by introducing the π-conjugated delocalized melamine and antimony trifluoride via a simple aqueous solution evaporation method. It features one-dimensional parallel [C₃N₆H₇]_∞ chains further connected by hydrogen bonds originated from [SbF₅]^2- groups with lone pairs. The experimental optical band gap (4.74 eV) allows it to be used in the ultraviolet region. The first-principles calculations suggest that (C₃N₆H₇)₂SbF₅·H₂O exhibits a large birefringence (∼0.38@550 nm), which is twice larger than that of the commercial CaCO₃ crystal. Therefore, introducing the fluoride into π-conjugated melamine may be a good tactic to obtain birefringent crystals with large optical anisotropy.

KF·B(OH)3: a KBBF-type material with large birefringence and remarkable deep-ultraviolet transparency

A designed material with large birefringence and remarkable deep-ultraviolet transparency, KF·B(OH)₃, has been discovered. The well-aligned [F·B(OH)₃]^- layers endow a very large bandgap (7.63 eV), comparably large birefringence (0.114 @1064 nm), and the reinforced interlayer bonding of ca. 2.16 × KBe₂BO₃F₂.

Enhanced Interlayer Interaction and Second-Harmonic-Generation Response in a KBe2BO3F2-Type Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Zinc Borate

A new inorganic-organic hybrid zinc borate was prepared under hydrothermal conditions. This compound is the first KBe₂BO₃F₂ (KBBF) derivative with zinc borate layers linked by mononegatively charged amino acids. Notably, it exhibits a relatively large second-harmonic-generation response of about 2.0 times that of KBBF and a moderate birefringence for phase matching in the UV region. The enhanced interlayer interaction was evaluated by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory.

Noncentrosymmetric Rare-Earth Borate Fluoride La2B5O9F3: A New Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Crystal with Enhanced Linear and Nonlinear Performance

In crystal engineering, it is an effective and controllable approach to modify the electronic band structure and optimize crystal performances using rational chemical cosubstitution in a classic structure model. Herein, the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) rare-earth borate fluoride La₂B₅O₉F₃ was designed and synthesized successfully based on the extraordinarily stable M₂B₅O₉X (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Sn, Pb, and Eu; X = Cl, Br, and I) template. Moreover, all 70 rare-earth borate halides were discussed, and the ratio of crystallization in NCS group is only 17.1%, much lower than 34.9% in all anhydrous borates. Benefiting from the substitution of [MOX] by [LaOF] polyhedra with improved hyperpolarizability and anisotropy of polarizability, compared with the M₂B₅O₉X family, La₂B₅O₉F₃ with optimized band structure exhibits the suitable SHG response (1.2 × KH₂PO₄ (KDP) @ 1064 nm), large band gap (6.58 eV), and moderate birefringence, which well achieves the optimal balance among the three critical parameters mentioned above for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications in the short-wavelength region. This work expands the research field of NLO materials to rare-earth borate fluorides and can lead to a better understanding of the role of rare-earth metal cations.

Metal oxyhalides: an emerging family of nonlinear optical materials

Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have drawn enormous academic and technological attention attributable to their indispensable role in laser frequency conversion and other greatly facilitated applications. The exploration of new NLO materials with high performances thus has long been an intriguing research field for chemists and material scientists. However, an ideal NLO material should simultaneously satisfy quite a few fundamental yet rigorous criteria including a noncentrosymmetric structure, large NLO coefficients, desired transparent range, large birefringence, high laser damage threshold, and availability of a large-size single crystal. Therefore, the identification of promising compound systems, targeted design, and experience-based syntheses are crucial to discover novel NLO materials working in the spectral region of interest. As an important family of mixed-anion compounds, versatile metal oxyhalides containing metal-centered oxyhalide functional units ([MO m X n ] (X = F, Cl, Br, and I)) are becoming a marvelous branch for interesting NLO materials. Especially, when the central metals are d0/d10 transition metals or heavy post-transition metals, a number of novel NLO materials with superior functionalities are expected. Our thorough review on the recent achievements of metal oxyhalides for NLO materials are divided into the fast-growing NLO metal oxyhalides with single type halogen anions and the newly identified NLO metal oxyhalides with mixed halogen anions. Here we mainly focus on the design strategy, structural chemistry, NLO-related properties, and structure-property correlation of the metal oxyhalides with relatively large NLO responses. We hope this review can provide an insight on the rational design and future development of emerging metal oxyhalides for NLO and other applications.

Layered Perovskite-like Nitrate Cs2Pb(NO3)2Br2 as a Multifunctional Optical Material

A novel alkali metal lead halide nitrate, Cs₂Pb(NO₃)₂Br₂, has been successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Interestingly, the title compound features a distinctive Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite-like layered structure, which induces the outstanding multifunctional optical properties, including a large birefringence (0.147@546 nm) and broad light-orange emission. Detailed structural analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that the large birefringence originates from the p-π interaction between the Pb²⁺ cations and NO₃ groups and that the excellent luminescence properties derive from the distortion of PbO₄Br₄ polyhedra. This work not only enriches the variant structure types of layered perovskites but also guides the further exploration of all-inorganic multifunctional optical materials.

Germanium-based superatom clusters as excess electron compounds with significant static and dynamic NLO response; a DFT study

Herein, the geometric, electronic, and nonlinear optical properties of excess electron zintl clusters Ge₅AM₃, Ge₉AM₅, and Ge₁₀AM₃ (AM = Li, Na, and K) are investigated. The clusters under consideration demonstrate considerable electronic stability as well as superalkali characteristics. The NBO charge is transferred from the alkali metal to the Ge-atoms. The FMO analysis shows fabulous conductive properties with a significant reduction in SOMO-LUMO gaps (0.79-4.04 eV) as compared with undoped systems. The designed clusters are completely transparent in the deep UV-region and show absorption in the visible and near-IR region. Being excess electron compounds these clusters exhibit remarkable hyperpolarizability response up to 8.99 × 10^-26 esu, where a static second hyperpolarizability (γ _o) value of up to 2.15 × 10^-30 esu was recorded for Ge₉Na₅ superatom clusters. The excitation energy is the main controlling factor for hyperpolarizability as revealed from the two-level model study. The electro-optical Pockel's effect and the second harmonic generation phenomenon (SHG) are used to investigate dynamic nonlinear optical features. At a lower applied frequency (=532 nm), the dynamic hyperpolarizability and second hyperpolarizability values are significantly higher for the studied clusters. Furthermore, for the Ge₉K₅ cluster, the hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS) increases to 5.03 × 10^-26 esu.

Structure and Origin of the Second-Harmonic Generation Response of Nonlinear Optical Material Sr2Be2B2O7

Sr₂Be₂B₂O₇ (SBBO) has long been considered as one of the most promising deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical materials, but its crystal structure described by space group P6̅c2 in previous studies has remained questionable. On the basis of first-principles calculations coupled with the high-throughput crystal structure prediction method, we found three energetically favorable structures for SBBO with space groups Cm, Pm, and P6̅. These structures and a superstructure of space group Pm-S derived from the Cm structure were refined by the Rietveld method using the available powder X-ray diffraction data. These analyses show that the Pm-S structure is the best one, but its parent Cm structure is almost equally good and has the advantage of having higher symmetry. Via atom response theory analysis, we resolved the cause for the second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses of SBBO at the atomic and orbital level to elucidate the importance of local inversion symmetry in reducing the SHG response.

Sn2 PO4 I: An Excellent Birefringent Material with Giant Optical Anisotropy in Non π-Conjugated Phosphate

Exploring non π-conjugated phosphate birefringent crystal with a large birefringence has been a great challenge. Herein, based on the unique two-dimensional layered structure in KBe₂ BO₃ F₂ (KBBF), two new compounds, Sn₂ PO₄ I and Sn₂ BO₃ I, were designed and synthesized successfully, maintaining the layer structural feature and enhancing the optical anisotropy of crystals. In particular, the birefringence of Sn₂ PO₄ I is larger than or equal to 0.664 @546 nm, which is largest among the reported borates and phosphates, even surpassing commercial birefringent crystals YVO₄ and TiO₂ . This work indicates that a breakthrough in birefringence of inorganic compound was achieved. Also, it provides a guiding idea for exploring large birefringence materials in the future.

LiB9O15·H2dap·H2O: A Cotemplated Acentric Layer-Pillared Borate Built by Mixed Oxoboron Clusters

An acentric layer-pillared borate, LiB₉O₁₅·H₂dap·H₂O (1, dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), cotemplated by organic and inorganic cations and build by mixed oxoboron cluster units of B₆O₁₃^8- and B₃O₇^5-, has first been made under solvothermal conditions, in which the B₆O₁₃^8- clusters link each other to form 2D layers containing 9-membered ring (MR) windows, while the B₃O₇^5- clusters join together to produce 1D chains that further perform as the pillars to connect neighboring layers, resulting in a 3D layer-pillared framework with 13- and 7-MR channels located by H₂dap²⁺ and Li⁺ cations, respectively. Its second harmonic generation shows a response of ∼2.1 times that of KDP (KH₂PO₄).
