Light-Gated Rotation in a Molecular Motor Functionalized with a Dithienylethene Switch

Unraveling the Dynamic Molecular Motions of a Twin-Cavity Cage with Slow Configurational but Rapid Conformational Interconversions

Featuring diverse structural motions/changes, dynamic molecular systems hold promise for executing complex tasks. However, their structural complexity presents formidable challenge in elucidating their kinetics, especially when multiple structural motions are intercorrelated. We herein introduce a twin-cavity cage that features interconvertible C3- and C1-configurations, with each configuration exhibiting interchangeable P- and M-conformations. This molecule is therefore composed of four interconnected chiral species (P)-C3, (M)-C3, (P)-C1, (M)-C1. We showcase an effective approach to decouple these sophisticated structural changes into two kinetically distinct pathways. Utilizing time-dependent 1H NMR spectroscopy at various temperatures, which disregards the transition between mirror-image conformations, we first determine the rate constant (kc) for the C3- to C1-configuration interconversion, while time-dependent circular dichroism spectroscopy at different temperatures quantifies the observed rate constant (kobs) of the ensemble of all the structural changes. As kobs ≫ ${{\rm { \gg }}}$ kc, it allows us to decouple the overall molecular motions into a slow configurational transformation and rapid conformational interconversions, with the latter further dissected into two independent conformational interchanges, namely (P)-C3← → ${ \mathbin{{\stackrel{\textstyle\rightarrow} { {\smash{\leftarrow}\vphantom{_{\vbox to.5ex{\vss}}}} } }} }$ (M)-C3 and (P)-C1← → ${ \mathbin{{\stackrel{\textstyle\rightarrow} { {\smash{\leftarrow}\vphantom{_{\vbox to.5ex{\vss}}}} } }} }$ (M)-C1. This work, therefore, sheds light on the comprehensive kinetic study of complex molecular dynamics, offering valuable insights for the rational design of smart dynamic materials for applications of sensing, separation, catalysis, molecular machinery, etc.

Azotriptycenes: Photoswitchable Molecular Brakes

The control of molecular motions is a central topic of molecular machine research. Molecular brakes are fundamental building blocks towards such goal as they allow deliberately decelerating specific motions after an outside stimulus is applied. Here we present azotriptycenes as structural framework for light-controlled molecular brakes. The intrinsic kinetics and their changes upon azotriptycene isomerization are scrutinized comprehensively by a mixed theoretical and variable temperature NMR approach. With azotriptycenes C-N bond rotation rates can be decelerated or accelerated reversibly by up to five orders of magnitude. Rate change effects are highly localized and are strongest for the C-N bond connecting a triptycene rotor fragment to the central diazo group. The detailed mechanistic insights provide a solid basis for further conscious design and applications in the future.

Photo-Controlled Nano-Supramolecular Size and Reversible Luminescent Behaviors Based on Cucurbit[7]uril Cascaded Assembly

Supramolecular luminescent material with switchable behavior and photo-induced aggregation with emission enhancement is a current research hot spot. Herein, a size-tunable nano-supramolecular assembly with reversible photoluminescent behavior was constructed by noncovalent polymerization of diarylethene-bridged bis(coumarin) derivative (DAE-CO), cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), and β-cyclodextrin-grafted hyaluronic acid (HACD). Benefiting from the macrocyclic confinement effect, the guest molecule DAE-CO was included into the cavity of CB[7] to give enhanced fluorescence emission of the resulting DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2 with longer lifetime at 432 nm to 1.43 ns, thereby further enhancing fluorescence output and lifetime (1.46 ns) when further assembled with HACD, compared with the free DAE-CO (0.95 ns). In addition, DAE-CO, DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2, and DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2&HACD all possessed characteristics of aggregation-induced emission and reversible photo-switched structural interconversion, exhibiting an obvious photophysical activation phenomenon of self-aggregation into larger nanoparticles with increase in fluorescence emission intensity, lifetime, and size after irradiation, which could be increased step by step with the alternating irradiation of 254 nm (5 min) or >600 nm (30 s) repeated 7 times. These supramolecular assemblies were successfully used in the tumor cells' targeted imaging and anti-counterfeiting because of the capability of HACD for recognizing specific receptors overexpressed on the surface of tumor cells and the excellent photo-regulated switch ability of DAE-CO, providing an approach of constructing photo-induced emission-enhanced luminescent materials.

Molecular machines stimulate intercellular calcium waves and cause muscle contraction

Intercellular calcium waves (ICW) are complex signalling phenomena that control many essential biological activities, including smooth muscle contraction, vesicle secretion, gene expression and changes in neuronal excitability. Accordingly, the remote stimulation of ICW could result in versatile biomodulation and therapeutic strategies. Here we demonstrate that light-activated molecular machines (MM)-molecules that perform mechanical work on the molecular scale-can remotely stimulate ICW. MM consist of a polycyclic rotor and stator that rotate around a central alkene when activated with visible light. Live-cell calcium-tracking and pharmacological experiments reveal that MM-induced ICW are driven by the activation of inositol-triphosphate-mediated signalling pathways by unidirectional, fast-rotating MM. Our data suggest that MM-induced ICW can control muscle contraction in vitro in cardiomyocytes and animal behaviour in vivo in Hydra vulgaris. This work demonstrates a strategy for directly controlling cell signalling and downstream biological function using molecular-scale devices.

Accounts of applied molecular rotors and rotary motors: recent advances

Molecular machines are nanoscale devices capable of performing mechanical works at molecular level. These systems could be a single molecule or a collection of component molecules that interrelate with one another to produce nanomechanical movements and resulting performances. The design of the components of molecular machine with bioinspired traits results in various nanomechanical motions. Some known molecular machines are rotors, motors, nanocars, gears, elevators, and so on based on their nanomechanical motion. The conversion of these individual nanomechanical motions to collective motions via integration into suitable platforms yields impressive macroscopic output at varied sizes. Instead of limited experimental acquaintances, the researchers demonstrated several applications of molecular machines in chemical transformation, energy conversion, gas/liquid separation, biomedical use, and soft material fabrication. As a result, the development of new molecular machines and their applications has accelerated over the previous two decades. This review highlights the design principles and application scopes of several rotors and rotary motor systems because these machines are used in real applications. This review also offers a systematic and thorough overview of current advancements in rotary motors, providing in-depth knowledge and predicting future problems and goals in this area.

Realizing Photoswitchable Mechanoluminescence in Organic Crystals Based on Photochromism

Organic mechanoluminescent (ML) materials possessing photophysical properties that are sensitive to multiple external stimuli have shown great potential in many fields, including optic and sensing. Particularly, the photoswitchable ML property for these materials is fundamental to their applications but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, photoswitchable ML is successfully realized by endowing reversible photochromic properties to an ML molecule, namely 2-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl) fluoropyridine (o-TPF). o-TPF shows both high-contrast photochromism with a distinct color change from white to purplish red, as well as bright blue ML (λ_ML  = 453 nm). The ML property can be repeatedly switched between ON and OFF states under alternate UV and visible light irradiation. Impressively, the photoswitchable ML is of high stability and repeatability. The ML can be reversibly switched on and off by conducting alternate UV and visible light irradiation in cycles under ambient conditions. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the change of dipole moment of o-TPF during the photochromic process is responsible for the photoswitchable ML. These results outline a fundamental strategy to achieve for the control of organic ML and pave the way to the development of expanded smart luminescent materials and their applications.

Screw sense and screw sensibility: communicating information by conformational switching in helical oligomers

Biological systems have evolved a number of different strategies to communicate information on the molecular scale. Among these, the propagation of conformational change is among the most important, being the means by which G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) use extracellular signals to modulate intracellular processes, and the way that opsin proteins translate light signals into nerve impulses. The developing field of foldamer chemistry has allowed chemists to employ conformationally well-defined synthetic structures likewise to mediate information transfer, making use of mechanisms that are not found in biological contexts. In this review, we discuss the use of switchable screw-sense preference as a communication mechanism. We discuss the requirements for functional communication devices, and show how dynamic helical foldamers derived from the achiral monomers such as α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) and meso-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine fulfil them by communicating information in the form of switchable screw-sense preference. We describe the various stimuli that can be used to switch screw sense, and explore the way that propagation of the resulting conformational preference in a well-defined helical molecule allows screw sense to control chemical events remote from a source of information. We describe the operation of these conformational switches in the membrane phase, and outline the progress that has been made towards using conformational switching to communicate between the exterior and interior of a phospholipid vesicle.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are well-organized assemblies based on highly oriented and reversible noncovalent interactions containing photosensitive molecules as (co-)monomers. They have attracted increasing interest in smart materials and dynamic systems with precisely controllable functions, such as light-driven soft actuators, photoresponsive fluorescent anticounterfeiting and light-triggered electronic devices. The present review discusses light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers with their main photo-induced changes, e.g., geometry, dipole moment, and chirality. Based on these distinct changes, supramolecular polymers formed by light-activated molecules exhibit photoresponsive disassembly and reassembly. As a consequence, photo-induced supramolecular polymerization, "depolymerization," and regulation of the lengths and topologies are observed. Moreover, the light-controlled functions of supramolecular polymers, such as actuation, emission, and chirality transfer along length scales, are highlighted. Furthermore, a perspective on challenges and future opportunities is presented. Besides the challenge of moving from harmful UV light to visible/near IR light avoiding fatigue, and enabling biomedical applications, future opportunities include light-controlled supramolecular actuators with helical motion, light-modulated information transmission, optically recyclable materials, and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems.

Ytterbium(III) Complex with Photochromic Ruthenium(II) Acetylide Ligand: All Visible Light Photoswitching of NIR Luminescence

We report a ruthenium(II) bisacetylide complex bearing a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) acetylide arm and a coordinating bipyridyl on the trans acetylide unit. Its coordination with Yb(TTA)₃ centers (TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) produces a bimetallic complex in which the dithienylethene isomerization is triggered by both ultraviolet (UV) light absorbed by the DTE unit and 450 nm excitation in a transition of the organometallic moiety. The redox behavior arising from the ruthenium(II) bisacetylide system is fully investigated by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry, revealing a lack of stability of the DTE-closed oxidized state preventing effective redox luminescence switching. On the other hand, the photoswitching of ytterbium(III) near-infrared (NIR) emission triggered by the photochromic reaction is fully operational. The electronic structure of this complex in its different states characterized by strong electronic coupling between the DTE and the ruthenium(II)-based moieties leading to metal-assisted photochromic behavior were rationalized with the help of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.

Probing the Rotary Cycle of Amine-Substituted Molecular Motors

An understanding of the rotary cycle of molecular motors (MMs), a key component of an approach to opening cells using mechanical motion, is important in furthering the research. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used for in situ analysis of illuminated light-active MMs. We found that the presence of a N,N-dimethylethylenediamine in a position conjugated to the central olefin results in changes to the rotation of a second-generation Feringa-type MM. Importantly, the addition decreases the photostability of the compound. The parent compound 1 can withstand >2 h of illumination with no signs of decomposition, while the amino 7 decomposes after 10 min. We found that the degradation can be mitigated by implementing the simple techniques of modulating the light dose, dilution, and stirring the sample while illuminating. Additionally, the presence of moisture affects the rate of the motor's rotation. The addition of the amino group to 1, without moisture present, makes the rotation of motor 7 three times slower than the unfunctionalized parent compound. We also report the use of a method that can be used to determine the molar extinction coefficient of a light-generated metastable species. This method can be used when in situ NMR illumination is not available.

Dual-function artificial molecular motors performing rotation and photoluminescence

Molecular machines have caused one of the greatest paradigm shifts in chemistry, and by powering artificial mechanical molecular systems and enabling autonomous motion, they are expected to be at the heart of exciting new technologies. One of the biggest challenges that still needs to be addressed is designing the involved molecules to combine different orthogonally controllable functions. Here, we present a prototype of artificial molecular motors exhibiting the dual function of rotary motion and photoluminescence. Both properties are controlled by light of different wavelengths or by exploiting motors' outstanding two-photon absorption properties using low-intensity near-infrared light. This provides a noninvasive way to both locate and operate these motors in situ, essential for the application of molecular machines in complex (bio)environments.

Synergistic interplay between photoisomerization and photoluminescence in a light-driven rotary molecular motor

Photoactuators and photoluminescent dyes utilize light to perform mechanical motion and undergo spontaneous radiation emission, respectively. Combining these two functionalities in a single molecule would benefit the construction of advanced molecular machines. Due to the possible detrimental interaction between the two light-dependent functional parts, the design of hybrid systems featuring both functions in parallel remains highly challenging. Here, we develop a light-driven rotary molecular motor with an efficient photoluminescent dye chemically attached to the motor, not compromising its motor function. This molecular system shows efficient rotary motion and bright photoluminescence, and these functions can be addressed by a proper choice of excitation wavelengths and solvents. The moderate interaction between the two parts generates synergistic effects, which are beneficial for lower-energy excitation and chirality transfer from the motor to the photoluminescent dye. Our results provide prospects towards photoactive multifunctional systems capable of carrying out molecular rotary motion and tracking its location in a complex environment.

Stepping Out of the Blue: From Visible to Near-IR Triggered Photoswitches

Light offers unique opportunities for controlling the activity of materials and biosystems with high spatiotemporal resolution. Molecular photoswitches are chromophores that undergo reversible isomerization between different states upon irradiation with light, allowing a convenient means to control their influence over the system of interest. However, a significant limitation of classical photoswitches is the requirement to initiate the switching in one or both directions using deleterious UV light with poor tissue penetration. Red-shifted photoswitches are hence in high demand and have attracted keen recent research interest. In this Review, we highlight recent progress towards the development of visible- and NIR-activated photoswitches characterized by distinct photochromic reaction mechanisms. We hope to inspire further endeavors in this field, allowing the full potential of these tools in biotechnology and materials chemistry applications to be realized.

Providing theoretical insight into the role of symmetry in the photoisomerization mechanism of a non-symmetric dithienylethene photoswitch

Dithienylethene (DTE) molecular photoswitches have shown to be excellent candidates in the design of efficient optoelectronic devices, due to their high photoisomerization quantum yield (QY), for which symmetry is suggested to play a crucial role. Here, we present a theoretical study on the photochemistry of a non-symmetric dithienylethene photoswitch, with a special emphasis on the effect of asymmetric substitution on the photocyclization and photoreversion mechanisms. We used the Spin-Flip Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (SF-TDDFT) method to locate and characterize the main structures (conical intersections and minima) of the ground state and the first two excited states, S₁ and S₂, along the ring-opening/closure reaction coordinate of the photocyclization and photoreversion processes, and to identify the important coordinates governing the radiationless decay pathways. Our results suggest that while the main features that characterize the photoisomerization of symmetric DTEs are also present for the photoisomerization of the non-symmetric DTE, the lower energy barrier on S₁ along the cycloreversion reaction speaks in favor of a more efficient and therefore a higher cycloreversion QY for the non-symmetric DTEs, making them a better candidate for molecular optoelectronic devices than their symmetric counterparts.

Controlling forward and backward rotary molecular motion on demand

Synthetic molecular machines hold tremendous potential to revolutionize chemical and materials sciences. Their autonomous motion controlled by external stimuli allows to develop smart materials whose properties can be adapted on command. For the realisation of more complex molecular machines, it is crucial to design building blocks whose properties can be controlled by multiple orthogonal stimuli. A major challenge is to reversibly switch from forward to backward and again forward light-driven rotary motion using external stimuli. Here we report a push-pull substituted photo-responsive overcrowded alkene whose function can be toggled between that of a unidirectional 2^nd generation rotary motor and a molecular switch depending on its protonation and the polarity of its environment. With its simplicity in design, easy preparation, outstanding stability and orthogonal control of distinct forward and backward motions, we believe that the present concept paves the way for creating more advanced molecular machines.

Being able to control motion at the molecular level is vital for many future developments in the molecular sciences. Here, the authors report the controlled forward and backward rotation of a molecular motor guided by external stimuli.

Photocontrolled multiple-state photochromic benzo[b]phosphole thieno[3,2-b]phosphole-containing alkynylgold(I) complex via selective light irradiation

Photochromic materials have drawn growing attention because using light as a stimulus has been regarded as a convenient and environmental-friendly way to control properties of smart materials. While photoresponsive systems that are capable of showing multiple-state photochromism are attractive, the development of materials with such capabilities has remained a challenging task. Here we show that a benzo[b]phosphole thieno[3,2‑b]phosphole-containing alkynylgold(I) complex features multiple photoinduced color changes, in which the gold(I) metal center plays an important role in separating two photoactive units that leads to the suppression of intramolecular quenching processes of the excited states. More importantly, the exclusive photochemical reactivity of the thieno[3,2‑b]phosphole moiety of the gold(I) complex can be initiated upon photoirradiation of visible light. Stepwise photochromism of the gold(I) complex has been made possible, offering an effective strategy for the construction of multiple-state photochromic materials with multiple photocontrolled states to enhance the storage capacity of potential optical memory devices.

Controlling rotary motion of molecular motors based on oxindole

Molecular motors are essential components of artificial molecular machines, which can be used to manipulate and amplify mechanical motion at the nanoscale to create machine-like function. Since the discovery of light-driven rotary molecular motors, the field has been widely developed, including the introduction of molecular motors based on oxindole by our group in 2019. The rotational properties of molecular motors, e.g. absorption wavelength, quantum yield and rotation speed, often critically depend on substituent effects. Up to now, the substituent effects of oxindole-based molecular motors have not yet been investigated. Herein, we present a family of oxindole-based molecular motors functionalised at three different positions on the motor core, with either CN or OMe groups. The motors prepared in this work retain the favourable features of oxindole-based motors, i.e. simple synthesis and visible light addressability. We find that functionalisation has substantial effects on the absorption wavelength of the motors, meanwhile the rotation speed is unaffected. Furthermore, we found that functionalisation of the oxindole molecular motors increases their quantum efficiency considerably in comparison to previous motors of their class.

We present a new family of oxindole-based functionalised at three positions on the upper and lower halves, with methoxy or cyano groups. We find that this allows the absorption wavelength and quantum yields of these motors to be tuned.

Computer-aided design of molecular machines: techniques, paradigms and difficulties

With their development in the past decade, molecular machines, which achieve specific tasks by responding to external stimuli, have gradually come to be regarded as powerful tools for a wide range of applications, rather than interesting molecular toys. This conceptual change in turn motivates scientists to design molecular machines with complex architectures. Due to the lack of general principles bridging the functions and the chemical structures of molecular machines, experience-based design becomes difficult with the increase of size and complexity of the architectures. Computer-aided molecular-machine design, therefore, has attracted widespread attention on account of its ability to model and investigate complex molecular architectures without too much time and expense required for synthetic experiments. Using leading-edge numerical-simulation techniques, the mechanisms underlying achieving tasks through response to external stimuli of a large number of existing molecular machines have been successfully explored. Based on the experience of studying existing molecular machines, generalized methodologies of predicting the properties and working principles of molecular candidates have been established, paving the way for de novo computer-aided design of molecular machines. In this perspective, we introduce cutting-edge techniques that have been applied for investigating and designing molecular machines. We show paradigms of computer-aided design of molecular machines, which can serve as guidelines for the investigation of new supramolecular architectures. Moreover, we discuss the limitations and possible future developments of current techniques and methodologies in the field of computer-aided design of molecular machines.

Designing light-driven rotary molecular motors

The ability to induce and amplify motion at the molecular scale has seen tremendous progress ranging from simple molecular rotors to responsive materials. In the two decades since the discovery of light-driven rotary molecular motors, the development of these molecules has been extensive; moving from the realm of molecular chemistry to integration into dynamic molecular systems. They have been identified as actuators holding great potential to precisely control the dynamics of nanoscale devices, but integrating molecular motors effectively into evermore complex artificial molecular machinery is not trivial. Maximising efficiency without compromising function requires conscious and judicious selection of the structures used. In this perspective, we focus on the key aspects of motor design and discuss how to manipulate these properties without impeding motor integrity. Herein, we describe these principles in the context of molecular rotary motors featuring a central double bond axle and emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of each design, providing a comprehensive evaluation of all artificial light-driven rotary motor scaffolds currently present in the literature. Based on this discussion, we will explore the trajectory of research into the field of molecular motors in the coming years, including challenges to be addressed, potential applications, and future prospects.

Theoretical study on pentiptycene molecular brake: photoinduced isomerization and photoinduced electron transfer

The isomerization of the double bond plays an important role in the braking and de-braking of the light-controlled molecular brake. Therefore, the pentiptycene-type (Pp-type) light-controlled molecular brake system ((E)- and (Z)-4'-pentiptycyl vinyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile) containing the C = C double bond was theoretically studied. Combining the 6-31G(d) basis set, the ωB97XD functional with dispersion correction was applied to implement the (E)-configuration and (Z)-configuration initial optimization. Next, using the 6-311G(d,p) basis set, the relaxed potential energy surface scans of the rotation angle were operated, and then the optimization calculations of the transition states at the extremum high points. Analyzing the stagnation points and the rotational transition states on the potential energy profiles, the rotation mechanism and basic energy parameters of the molecular brake were obtained. Then, the DFT computations at ground states and the TD-DFT computations of vertical excitation energy were put into practice at the accuracy of the def-TZVP basis set for the two configurations, and using the natural transition orbital (NTO) analyses combining the excitation energies and absorption spectra, the electronic transition characteristics and electron transfer properties of light-controlled molecular brake were studied. Afterwards, in order to investigate the photoinduced isomerization reaction, the C = C double bond was scanned on the relaxed potential energy surface, and the intermediates of the isomerization reaction were searched and analyzed; thus, the braking mechanism of the light-controlled molecular brake was proposed.

Steric Effects on the Thermal Processes of Hemithioindigo Based Molecular Motor Rotation

Tuning the thermal behavior of light driven molecular motors is fundamentally important for their future rational design. In many molecular motors thermal ratcheting steps are comprised of helicity inversions, energetically stabilizing the initial photoproducts. In this work we investigated a series of five hemithioindigo (HTI) based molecular motors to reveal the influence of steric hindrance in close proximity to the rotation axle on this process. Applying a high yielding synthetic procedure, we synthesized constitutional isomeric derivatives to distinguish between substitution effects at the aromatic and aliphatic position on the rotor fragment. The kinetics of thermal helix inversions were elucidated using low temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy and an in situ irradiation technique. In combination with a detailed theoretical description, a comparative analysis of substituent effects on the thermal helix inversions of the rotation cycle is now possible. Such deeper understanding of the rotational cycle of HTI molecular motors is essential for speed regulation and future applications of visible light triggered nanomachines.

Single-Photon Near-Infrared-Responsiveness from the Molecular to the Supramolecular Level via Platination of Pentacenes

Near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness is important for various applications. Currently, single-photon NIR-responsive systems are rare compared to systems that display two-photon absorption and triplet-triplet annihilation processes. Supramolecular stacking of photo-responsive chromophores results in decreased efficiency due to space-confinement effects. Herein we show that σ-platination of pentacenes is a feasible protocol to build single-photon NIR-responsive systems, with advantages including a low HOMO-LUMO energy gap, high photochemical efficiency, and pathway specificity. The pentacene-to-endoperoxidation transformation is accompanied by color and absorbance changes. The high photo-oxygenation efficiency of σ-platinated pentacenes facilitates NIR responsiveness in one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, resulting in the disappearance of supramolecular chirality signals and disruption of self-assembled nanofibers. Overall, the σ-platination strategy opens up new avenues toward NIR photo-responsive materials at the molecular and supramolecular levels.

Trace mild acid-catalysed Z → E isomerization of norbornene-fused stilbene derivatives: intelligent chiral molecular photoswitches with controllable self-recovery

Stilbene derivatives have long been known to undergo “acid-catalyzed” Z → E isomerization, where a strong mineral acid at high concentration is practically necessary. Such severe reaction conditions often cause undesired by-reactions and limit their potential application. Herein, we present a trace mild acid-catalyzed Z → E isomerization found with stilbene derivatives fused with a norbornene moiety. By-reactions, such as the migration of the C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C double bond and electrophilic addition reactions, were completely inhibited because of the ring strain caused by the fused norbornene component. Direct photolysis of the E isomers at selected wavelengths led to the E → Z photoisomerization of these stilbene derivatives and thus constituted a unique class of molecular switches orthogonally controllable by light and acid. The catalytic amount of acid could be readily removed, and the Z → E isomerization could be controlled by turning on/off the irradiation of a photoacid, which allowed repeated isomerization in a non-invasive manner. Moreover, the Z isomer produced by photoisomerization could spontaneously self-recover to the E isomer in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid. The kinetics of Z → E isomerization were adjustable by manipulating catalytic factors and, therefore, unprecedented molecular photoswitches with adjustable self-recovery were realized.

Quantitative Z → E isomerization was catalyzed by trace mild acids to offer molecular switches orthogonally controllable by acid and light.

Effects of n → π* Orbital Interactions on Molecular Rotors: The Control and Switching of Rotational Pathway and Speed

The role of n → π* orbital interactions in the rotational pathway and barrier of biaryl-based molecular rotors was elucidated through a combined experimental and computational study. The n → π* interaction in the transition state can lead to the acceleration of rotors. The competition between the n → π* interaction and hydrogen bonding further enabled the reversal of the pathway and greasing/braking the rotor in response to acid/base stimuli, thereby creating a switchable molecular rotor.

Synthesis strategies for non-symmetric, photochromic diarylethenes

Diarylethenes (DAEs) represent an important class of photochromes with notable characteristics, like thermally irreversible photoisomerization and high fatigue resistance. Structural diversification of the DAE scaffold has enabled further refinement of photochromic properties and realization of new applications, ranging from advanced materials to tools for studying biological systems. In particular, methods for synthesizing non-symmetric DAE scaffolds, which are typically more challenging to synthesize than their symmetric counterparts, have grown over the past 20 years. These developments are surveyed in this review, with discussion of how access to these compounds has contributed to the improvement of photochromic properties and paved the way for exploring new applications of DAEs. First, non-symmetric DAE structures are classified and their uses and applications are overviewed. Subsequent sections discuss the main strategies that have been used to access non-symmetric DAEs with examples illustrating the impact of non-symmetric DAEs in the growing field of light-controlled molecular systems.

Electronic transport induced by doping on the electrodes in molecular devices

The electronic transport properties of molecular device based on photochromic diarylethene with carbon nanotube electrode are investigated by density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green’s function. The devices with open and closed configurations show a switching effect. It is found that doping of different amounts of nitrogen atoms on left electrodes results in different electronic transport properties. In addition, we discuss the observed oscillation of current in the devices induced by doping using transmission eigenstates and transmission spectra of the device. The local density of states of the device is calculated to analyze the observed rectifying behavior. The results suggest that doping of nitrogen atoms on the left electrode can be considered as a factor to modulate the electronic transport properties of molecular device.

Photochromic Conjugated Microporous Polymer Manifesting Bio-Inspired pcFRET and Logic Gate Functioning

Design and synthesis of solid-state photochromic materials remain a challenge because of high structural constrain. However, this can be mitigated in attaining structural flexibility by introducing permanent porosity into the system. Here, we report for the first time the design and synthesis of a photochromic conjugated microporous polymer (pcCMP) by assembling photochromic dithienylethene aldehyde and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide. The yellow photo-isomer pcCMP-O gets converted to a deep-green photo-isomer pcCMP-C by UV-light irradiation, which can be reverted to pcCMP-O by visible light or thermal treatment. Owing to the thermo-irreversible nature, the pcCMP is found to be suitable for designing an INH functioning logic gate. pcCMP-C shows highly enhanced conductivity (92 times) because of enhanced conjugation compared to pcCMP-O. Furthermore, we demonstrate the bio-inspired photo-switchable pcFRET process by encapsulation of a red-emissive green fluorescent protein (gfp) chromophore analogue into the pcCMP. This material shows high processibility and has been exploited further for secret writing.

Designing with Light: Advanced 2D, 3D, and 4D Materials

Recent achievements and future opportunities for the design of 2D, 3D, and 4D materials using photochemical reactions are summarized. Light is an attractive stimulus for material design due to its outstanding spatiotemporal control, and its ability to mediate rapid polymerization under moderate reaction temperatures. These features have been significantly enhanced by major advances in light generation/manipulation with light-emitting diodes and optical fiber technologies which now allows for a broad range of cost-effective fabrication protocols. This combination is driving the preparation of sophisticated 2D, 3D, and 4D materials at the nano-, micro-, and macrosize scales. Looking ahead, future challenges and opportunities that will significantly impact the field and help shape the future of light as a versatile and tunable design tool are highlighted.

Light-Activated Organic Molecular Motors and Their Applications

Molecular motors are at the heart of cellular machinery, and they are involved in converting chemical and light energy inputs into efficient mechanical work. From a synthetic perspective, the most advanced molecular motors are rotators that are activated by light wherein a molecular subcomponent rotates unidirectionally around an axis. The mechanical work produced by arrays of molecular motors can be used to induce a macroscopic effect. Light activation offers advantages over biological chemically activated molecular motors because one can direct precise spatiotemporal inputs while conducting reactions in the gas phase, in solution and in vacuum, while generating no chemical byproducts or waste. In this review, we describe the origins of the first light-activated rotary motors and their modes of function, the structural modifications that led to newer motor designs with optimized rotary properties at variable activation wavelengths. Presented are molecular motor attachments to surfaces, their insertion into supramolecular structures and photomodulating materials, their use in catalysis, and their action in biological environments to produce exciting new prospects for biomedicine.

Photo- and Redox-Driven Artificial Molecular Motors

Directed motion at the nanoscale is a central attribute of life, and chemically driven motor proteins are nature's choice to accomplish it. Motivated and inspired by such bionanodevices, in the past few decades chemists have developed artificial prototypes of molecular motors, namely, multicomponent synthetic species that exhibit directionally controlled, stimuli-induced movements of their parts. In this context, photonic and redox stimuli represent highly appealing modes of activation, particularly from a technological viewpoint. Here we describe the evolution of the field of photo- and redox-driven artificial molecular motors, and we provide a comprehensive review of the work published in the past 5 years. After an analysis of the general principles that govern controlled and directed movement at the molecular scale, we describe the fundamental photochemical and redox processes that can enable its realization. The main classes of light- and redox-driven molecular motors are illustrated, with a particular focus on recent designs, and a thorough description of the functions performed by these kinds of devices according to literature reports is presented. Limitations, challenges, and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.
