Dramatically Enhanced Solubility of Halide-Containing Organometallic Species in Diiodomethane: The Role of Solvent⋅⋅⋅Complex Halogen Bonding

X/Y platinum(II) complexes: some features of supramolecular assembly via halogen bonding

Four series of new luminescent cyclometalated complexes [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] (HC^N = 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy), 2-(1-benzofuran-3-yl)pyridine (Hbfpy), methyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylate (Hmpqc), 2-(1-benzothiophen-3-yl)pyridine (Hbtpy), IPy = 4-iodopyridine, and Y = Cl, Br, I) have been investigated as X/Y 'building blocks' for the construction of a supramolecular network utilizing the I atom in IPy as a halogen bond (XB) donor (the X atom). The σ-hole of the X atom was found to provide non-covalent X⋯Y, X⋯Pt and X⋯π (π system of the metalated chelate ring) interactions for the complexes in the crystal state. NBO analysis confirms donation of the platinum electron density to iodine upon the X⋯Pt interaction. The nature of the X counterpart in XB depends on the nature of the Y atom and the cyclometalating ligand of the Pt(II) complex. DFT calculations show that the HOMO of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] in the S0 state is delocalized over Pt, Y and a C-coordinating fragment of C^N, while the LUMO in most complexes is formed by the Py orbitals of IPy. However, the α-HOMO in the lowest triplet state of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] contains no contribution of the IPy wavefunctions. All Pt(II) complexes exhibited triplet luminescence in solution and in the solid state (Φ up to 0.129), which is determined by the nature of the C^N ligand. The emission profile is independent of the nature of the ligand Y, while the quantum yield decreases from Cl to I. Accordingly, on the basis of DFT calculation, this emission is interpreted as a C^N intraligand charge transfer predominantly. The XB formation did not show an effect on the luminescence of the complexes in the solid phase, however grinding of crystals results in an increase of brightness.

Solution and solid-state studies of hydrogen and halogen bonding with N-heterocyclic carbene supported nickel(II) fluoride complexes

Nickel fluoride complexes of the type [Ni(F)(L)2(ArF)] (L = phosphine, ArF = fluorinated arene) are well-known to form strong halogen and hydrogen bonds in solution and in the solid state. A comprehensive study of such non-covalent interactions using bis(carbene) complexes as acceptors and suitable halogen and hydrogen bond donors is presented. In solution, the complex [Ni(F)(iPr2Im)2(C6F5)] forms halogen and hydrogen bonds with iodopentafluorobenzene and indole, respectively, which have formation constants (K300) an order of magnitude greater than those of structurally related phosphine supported nickel fluorides. Co-crystallisation of this complex and its backbone-methylated analogue [Ni(F)(iPr2Me2Im)2(C6F5)] with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene produces halogen bonding adducts which were characterised by X-ray analysis and 19F MAS solid state NMR analysis. Differences in the chemical shifts between the nickel fluoride and its halogen bonding adduct are well in line with data that were obtained from titration studies in solution.

Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Coordination Polymers Based on Ln(III) and 2,5-Diiodoterephthalates: Structures and Luminescent Behavior

Five new coordination polymers based on Ln3+ and 2,5-diiodoterephthalates (2,5-I-bdc)— {[La2(2,5-I-bdc)3(DMF)4]}·2DMF (1) and {[Ln2(2,5-I-bdc)3(DMF)4]} (Ln = La (2), Nd (3), Sm (4) and Eu (5))—were prepared and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometry. Luminescent behavior was examined (the highest quantum yield is 4.5%); thermal stability was examined using thermogravimetric analysis.

Stacking Interactions: A Supramolecular Approach to Upgrade Weak Halogen Bond Donors

The co-crystallization of tetracyanobenzene (TCB) with haloarenes ArX provided six new co-crystals TCB ⋅ ArX (ArX=PhCl, PhBr, 4-MeC6 H4 Cl, 4-MeC6 H4 Br, 4-MeOC6 H4 Cl, 1,2-Br2 C6 H4 ) which were studied by X-ray diffraction. In these systems, the strong collective effect of π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and lone pair-(X)⋅⋅⋅π-hole-(C) bondings between TCB and ArX promote the strength of X⋅⋅⋅Ncyano halogen bonding (HaB). Theoretical studies showed that the stacking interactions affect the σ-hole depth of the haloarenes, thus significantly boosting their ability to function as HaB donors. According to the molecular electrostatic potential calculations, the σ- hole-(Cl) value (1.5 kcal/mol) in the haloarene 4-MeOC6 H4 Cl (featuring an electron-rich arene moiety and exhibiting very poor σ-hole-(Cl) ability) increases significantly in the stacked trimer (TCB)2  ⋅ 4-MeOC6 H4 Cl (12.5 kcal/mol). Theoretical DFT calculations demonstrate the dramatic increase of X⋅⋅⋅Ncyano HaB strength for stacked trimers in comparison with parent unstacked haloarenes.

Zn(II) and Co(II) 3D Coordination Polymers Based on 2-Iodoterephtalic Acid and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane: Structures and Sorption Properties

Metal-organic frameworks [M₂(2-I-bdc)₂bpe] (M = Zn(II) (1), Co(II) (2), 2-I-bdc = 2-iodoterephtalic acid, and bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry. Both compounds retain their 3D structure after the removal of guest DMF molecules. Selectivity of sorption of different organic substrates from the gas phase was investigated for both complexes.

Halogen bonding in cadmium(II) MOFs: its influence on the structure and on the nitroaldol reaction in aqueous medium

A solvothermal reaction of Cd(II) with the dicarboxyl-functionalized arylhydrazone pro-ligands, 5-(2-(2,4,6-trioxotetrahydro-pyrimidin-5(2H)-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₅L¹) and 5-(2-(2,4-dioxopentan-3-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₃L²), or their halogen bond donor centre(s) decorated analogs 2,4,6-triiodo-5-(2-(2,4,6-trioxotetrahydropyrimidin-5(2H)-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₅L³) and 5-(2-(2,4-dioxopentan-3-ylidene)hydrazineyl)-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid (H₃L⁴), leads to the formation of known [Cd(H₃L¹)(H₂O)₂]_n (1) and new {[Cd(HL²)(H₂O)₂(DMF)]·H₂O}_n (2), [Cd(H₃L³)]_n (3) and {[Cd₂(μ-H₂O)₂(μ-H₂L⁴)₂(H₂L⁴)₂]·2H₂O}_n (4) coordination compounds, respectively. The aggregation of mononuclear units via Cd-OC and Cd-OH₂ coordination and C_Ar-I⋯I types of intramolecular halogen bonds lead to a dinuclear tecton 4. Both C_Ar-I⋯O and C_Ar-I⋯I types of intermolecular halogen bonds play a fundamental role in the supramolecular architectures of the obtained metal-organic frameworks 3 and 4. Theoretical (DFT) calculations confirmed the presence of the C_Ar-I⋯O and C_Ar-I⋯I halogen bonds in 3 and 4 and allowed their characterisation. The formation of intermolecular noncovalent interactions between the attached iodine substituents to the hydrazone ligands and polar solvent (water or methanol) molecules promoted, at least in part, the solubility of the corresponding complexes (3 and 4), which act as homogeneous catalyst precursors in the Henry reaction between aldehydes and nitroethane. The corresponding β-nitroalkanol products were obtained in good yields (66-79%) and with good diastereoselectivity (threo/erythro ca. 72 : 28) in water at room temperature.

The Isocyanide Complexes cis-[MCl2(CNC6H4-4-X)2] (M = Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Br) as Tectons in Crystal Engineering Involving Halogen Bonds

The isocyanide complexes cis-[MCl2(CNC6H4-4-X)2] (M = Pd; X = Cl, Br; M = Pt; X = Br) form isomorphous crystal structures exhibiting the Cl/Br and Pd/Pt exchanges featuring 1D chains upon crystallisation. Crystal packing is supported by the C–X···X–C halogen bonds (HaBs), C–H···X–C hydrogen bonds (HB), X···M semicoordination, and C···C contacts between the C atoms of aryl isocyanide ligands. The results of DFT calculations and topological analysis indicate that all the above contact types belong to attractive noncovalent interactions. A projection of the electron localization function (ELF) and an inspection of the electron density (ED) and the electrostatic potential (ESP) reveal the amphiphilic nature of X atoms playing the role of HaB donors, HaB and HB acceptors, and a nucleophilic partner in X···M semicoordination.

Azine Steric Hindrances Switch Halogen Bonding to N-Arylation upon Interplay with σ-Hole Donating Haloarenenitriles

An interplay between 4-bromo- and 4-iodo-5-nitrophthalonitriles (XNPN, X=Br or I) and any one of the azines (pyridine 1, 4-dimethylaminopyridine 2, isoquinoline 3, 4-cyanopyridine 4, 2-methylpyridine 5, 2-aminopyridine 6, quinoline 7, 1-methylisoquinoline 8, and 2,2'-bipyridine 9) proceeds differently depending on steric and electronic effects of the heterocycles. Sterically unhindered azines 1-3 underwent N-arylation to give the corresponding azinium salts (characterized by ¹ H and ¹³ C{H} NMR and high-resolution ESI-MS). In contrast, azines 4-9 with sterically hindered N atoms or bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent, form stable co-crystals with XNPN, where two interacting molecules are bound by halogen bonding. In all obtained co-crystals, X⋅⋅⋅N structure-directed halogen bonds were recognized and theoretically evaluated including DFT calculations (PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory), QTAIM analysis, molecular electrostatic potential surfaces, and noncovalent interaction plot index. Estimated energies of halogen bonding vary from -7.6 kcal/mol (for 6 ⋅ INPN) to -11.4 kcal/mol (5 ⋅ INPN).

Modulation of luminescence properties for [cyclometalated]-PtII(isocyanide) complexes upon co-crystallisation with halosubstituted perfluorinated arenes

C–X⋯Cl–Pt Halogen bonds and πh⋯d_z2[Pt^II] contacts led to the 2-fold increase of phosphorescence quantum yields for [cyclometalated]-Pt^II(isocyanide) complexes upon co-crystallisation with halosubstituted perfluorinated arenes.

Crystal engineering strategies towards halogen-bonded metal–organic multi-component solids: salts, cocrystals and salt cocrystals

This highlight presents an overview of the current advances in the preparation of halogen bonded metal–organic multi-component solids, including salts and cocrystals comprising neutral and ionic constituents.

Non-Covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry

The problem of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds is a hot topic in modern chemistry, material science, crystal engineering and related fields of knowledge. Researchers in various fields of chemistry and other disciplines (physics, crystallography, computer science, etc.) are welcome to submit their works on this topic for our Special Issue “Non-Covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry”. The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight and overview modern trends and draw the attention of the scientific community to various types of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds. In this editorial, I would like to briefly highlight the main successes of our research group in the field of the fundamental study of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds over the past 5 years.

The halogen bond with isocyano carbon reduces isocyanide odor

Predominantly, carbon atoms of various species function as acceptors of noncovalent interactions when they are part of a π-system. Here, we report on the discovery of a halogen bond involving the isocyano carbon lone pair. The co-crystallization or mechanochemical liquid-assisted grinding of model mesityl isocyanide with four iodoperfluorobenezenes leads to a series of halogen-bonded adducts with isocyanides. The obtained adducts were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state IR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies, and also by thermogravimetric analysis. The formation of the halogen bond with the isocyano group leads to a strong reduction of the isocyanide odor (3- to 46-fold gas phase concentration decrease). This manipulation makes isocyanides more suitable for laboratory storage and usage while preserving their reactivity, which is found to be similar between the adducts and the parent isocyanide in some common transformations, such as ligation to metal centers and the multi-component Ugi reaction.

New Crystal Forms for Biologically Active Compounds. Part 2: Anastrozole as N-Substituted 1,2,4-Triazole in Halogen Bonding and Lp-π Interactions with 1,4-Diiodotetrafluorobenzene

For an active pharmaceutical ingredient, it is important to stabilize its specific crystal polymorph. If the potential interconversion of various polymorphs is not carefully controlled, it may lead to deterioration of the drug’s physicochemical profile and, ultimately, its therapeutic efficacy. The desired polymorph stabilization can be achieved via co-crystallization with appropriate crystallophoric excipients. In this work, we identified an opportunity for co-crystallization of anastrozole (ASZ), a well-known aromatase inhibitor useful in second-line therapy of estrogen-dependent breast cancer, with a classical XB donor, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene (1,4-FIB). In the X-ray structures of ASZ·1.5 (1,4-FIB) co-crystal, different non-covalent interactions involving hydrogen and halogen atoms were detected and studied by quantum chemical calculations and QTAIM analysis at the ωB97XD/DZP-DKH level of theory.

Halogen Bonding in Isostructural Co(II) Complexes with 2-Halopyridines

Three complexes [Co(2-XPy)2Cl2] (X = Cl, Br, and I) were prepared and characterized, representing a rare case of isostructurality within the Cl-Br-I row. The nature of halogen bonding (XB) in a solid state was studied by DFT calculations, revealing a tendency of XB energy growth for heavier halogens.

Halogen Bonding Provides Heterooctameric Supramolecular Aggregation of Diaryliodonium Thiocyanate

The crystal structure of the newly synthesized 4-methoxyphenyl(phenyl)iodonium thiocyanate, [PhI(4-C6H4OMe)](SCN), represents the first example of 16-membered cyclic heterooctamer formed by halogen bonding between the iodonium cation and SCN−. Results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations followed by the topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) method at the ωB97XD/DZP-DKH level of theory reveal that energies of attractive intermolecular noncovalent interactions I···S and I···N (responsible for the formation of heterooctameric supramolecular clusters {PhI(4-C6H4OMe)}4·{SCN}4 in the solid state structure of [PhI(4-C6H4OMe)](SCN)) vary from 0.9 to 8.5 kcal/mol.

One- and Two-Dimensional Iodine-Rich Iodobismuthate(III) Complexes: Structure, Optical Properties, and Features of Halogen Bonding in the Solid State

Reactions of BiI₃, I₂, and iodide salts of two different pyridinum cations result in the formation of the novel iodine-rich iodobismuthates(III) (1,3-MePy)₄{[Bi₄I₁₆](I₂)} (1) and (1-MePy){[BiI₄](I₂)_0.5) (2), where the halometalate anions are connected by diiodine linkers into one- or two-dimensional supramolecular structures. Both complexes reveal narrow optical band gaps and fairly high thermal stability, favoring their potential use in photovoltaic devices.

The (Dioximate)NiII/I2 System: Ligand Oxidation and Binding Modes of Triiodide Species

Reinvestigation of (o-benzoquinonedioximate)₂Ni/I₂ systems demonstrated that the reaction itself and also the crystallization conditions dramatically affect the identity of generated species. Crystallization (CHCl₃, 20-25 °C) of the nickel(II) dioximate complex [Ni(bqoxH)₂] (bqoxH₂ = o-benzoquinonedioxime) with I₂ in the 1:(1-10) molar ratios of the reactants led to several (o-benzoquinonedioximate)₂Ni derivatives and/or iodine adducts [Ni(I)(bqoxH)(bqoxH₂)]·³/₂I₂, [Ni(I₃)(bqoxH)(bqoxH₂)]·[Ni(bqoxH)₂], and [Ni(I₃)(bqox^•-)(bqoxH₂)]·I₂; the latter one, featuring the anion-radical bqox^•- ligand, is derived from the formal (-2H⁺/1e^-)-oxidation of bqoxH₂. In these three adducts, various types of noncovalent interactions were identified experimentally and their existence was supported theoretically. The [Ni(I₃)(bqox^•-)(bqoxH₂)]·I₂ adduct exhibits simultaneous semicoordination and coordination patterns of the triiodide ligand; this is the first recognition of the semicoordination of any polyiodide ligand to a metal center. The semicoordination noncovalent contact Ni···I₃ (3.7011(10) Å) is substantially longer that the Ni-I₃ coordination bond (2.8476(9) Å), and the difference in energies between these two types of linkages is 8-12 kcal/mol.

Chlorotellurate(iv) supramolecular associates with “trapped” Br2: features of non-covalent halogen⋯halogen interactions in crystalline phases

Dihalomethanes as Bent Bifunctional XB/XB-Donating Building Blocks for Construction of Metal-involving Halogen Bonded Hexagons

The dihalomethanes CH₂ X₂ (X=Cl, Br, I) were co-crystallized with the isocyanide complexes trans-[MX^M ₂ (CNC₆ H₄ -4-X^C )₂ ] (M=Pd, Pt; X^M =Br, I; X^C =F, Cl, Br) to give an extended series comprising 15 X-ray structures of isostructural adducts featuring 1D metal-involving hexagon-like arrays. In these structures, CH₂ X₂ behave as bent bifunctional XB/XB-donating building blocks, whereas trans-[MX^M ₂ (CNC₆ H₄ -4-X^C )₂ ] act as a linear XB/XB acceptors. Results of DFT calculations indicate that all XCH₂ -X⋅⋅⋅X^M -M contacts are typical noncovalent interactions with estimated strengths in the range of 1.3-3.2 kcal mol^-1 . A CCDC search reveals that hexagon-like arrays are rather common but previously overlooked structural motives for adducts of trans-bis(halide) complexes and halomethanes.
