Abstract
The substituted tetrahydrofuran core is a structural motif in many biologically active and natural compounds. However, the scarcity of enantioselective methods developed towards its synthesis makes this field challenging and attractive to explore. Herein, the first Brønsted-base catalyzed enantioselective (3+2) annulation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with aldehydes and ketones affording enantioenriched 2,3,5-substituted tetrahydrofurans is reported. The reaction concept is based on activation of racemic β-cyclopropyl ketones by a chiral bifunctional Brønsted base which catalyzes the (3+2) annulation for a range of aldehydes and ketones. For aldehydes, the annulation furnished tetrahydrofurans in excellent yield, good diastereoselectivity and with excellent enantioselectivity up to >99 % ee. Surprisingly, aromatic aldehydes afforded the cis-2,5-substituted tetrahydrofurans as the major diastereoisomer, while for aliphatic aldehydes the trans-cycloadduct was favored. The reaction also proceeds well for ketones affording spiro tetrahydrofurans in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee). Hammett studies have been conducted to elucidate the influence of the electronic nature of benzaldehydes on the stereoselectivity. Based on the diastereochemical outcome for the aldehydes, two reaction paths for aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes are proposed. Finally, two diastereoselective synthetic transformations have been conducted to demonstrate the synthetic potential of the obtained products.

Abstract
We describe a Rh(I) catalyzed asymmetric ring opening of racemic vinyl cyclopropanes using aryl boronic acids as C-nucleophiles. When ferrocene-based chiral bisphosphines are used as ligands, the products are obtained with regioselectivities typically 99:1 r.r. and ee's generally between 88 and 96%. A wide range of aryl boronic acids can be used, and the products can be converted into a variety of targets. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that Zn(OTf)2 plays a significant role in the reaction by promoting rhodium-ligand complex formation and accelerating the reaction. We expect this method and these mechanistic insights to be useful in the development of new asymmetric methods.

Abstract
Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs), featuring two fused cyclopropane rings, have found widespread application in organic synthesis. Their versatile reactivity towards radicals, nucleophiles, cations, and carbenes makes them suitable for various reactions, including ring-opening and annulation strategies. Despite this versatility, their potential as enophiles in an ene reaction remains underexplored. Considering this and given the challenges of achieving diastereoselectivity in ring-opening reactions of BCBs, herein, we present a unique method utilizing BCBs as enophiles in a mild and diastereoselective Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed formal ene reaction with thioindolinones/thiolactams, delivering 1,3-disubstituted cyclobutane derivatives in high yields and excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity. Notably, structurally different thiolactam derivatives underwent diastereoselective addition to BCBs, affording the corresponding cyclobutanes. The synthesized thioindole-substituted cyclobutanes could serve as a versatile tool for subsequent functional group manipulations.

Abstract
A single-crystal-to-single-crystal solid-state reaction of vinylogous donor-acceptor cyclopropanes is documented. The enantiospecific synthesis of new products, distinct from those obtained in solution, is achieved for the target compounds. Photopolymerization occurred upon X-ray exposure to the crystals. Notably, in one case, this reactivity exhibits selectivity since an ordered arrangement of polymers and unreacted cocrystallized monomeric conformers has been observed. Structural characterization of the complete transformation monitored through single-crystal X-ray diffraction and supported by molecular dynamics simulations sheds light on the subtle role of crystal packing in the reaction process. Moreover, the X-ray diffraction (XRD)-resolved structure of a donor-acceptor cyclopropane intermediate reveals an elongation in bond length that corroborates the existence of the so-called "push-pull effect".

Abstract
A metal-free hexafluoroisopropanol-mediated hydro-phosphorothiolation of styrenes and donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with S-hydrogen phosphorothioates in a Markovnikov fashion has been developed under ambient reaction conditions to afford a library of S-alkyl phosphorothioates. Notably, this strategy provides a simple and efficient way to produce biologically significant kitazin and iprobenfos derivatives. Mechanistic studies disclose that the reaction proceeds through a carbocation intermediate.

Abstract
Herein we report an efficient two-carbon homologated variant of Friedel-Crafts alkylation via photochemical radical alkene stitching. Readily available feedstock alkenes are used as bridges between photogenerated alkyl radicals and arenes, opening a route to γ-aryl-carbonyls for chemo-divergent access to aryltetralone and γ-lactones, a gateway to 2,7'-cyclolignans.

Abstract
Cyclopropanes that carry an electron-accepting group react as electrophiles in polar, ring-opening reactions. Analogous reactions at cyclopropanes with additional C2 substituents allow one to access difunctionalized products. Consequently, functionalized cyclopropanes are frequently used building blocks in organic synthesis. The polarization of the C1-C2 bond in 1-acceptor-2-donor-substituted cyclopropanes not only favorably enhances reactivity toward nucleophiles but also directs the nucleophilic attack toward the already substituted C2 position. Monitoring the kinetics of non-catalytic ring-opening reactions with a series of thiophenolates and other strong nucleophiles, such as azide ions, in DMSO provided the inherent SN2 reactivity of electrophilic cyclopropanes. The experimentally determined second-order rate constants k 2 for cyclopropane ring-opening reactions were then compared to those of related Michael additions. Interestingly, cyclopropanes with aryl substituents at the C2 position reacted faster than their unsubstituted analogues. Variation of the electronic properties of the aryl groups at C2 gave rise to parabolic Hammett relationships.

Abstract
The use of benzotriazoles as nucleophilic triggers in the three-component Yb(OTf)3-catalyzed ring-opening 1,3-aminofunctionalization of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes is presented. Using N-halo succinimide (NXS) as the third component, the reaction afforded the 1,3-aminohalogenation product in up to an 84% yield. Moreover, using alkyl halides or Michael acceptors as the third components, the 3,1-carboaminated products are formed in up to a 96% yield in a one-pot operation. Employing Selectfluor as the electrophile, the reaction furnished the 1,3-aminofluorinated product in a 61% yield.

Abstract
New homo-sesquiterpenes are accessible after conversion of presilphiperfolan-8β-ol synthase (BcBOT2) with cyclopropylmethyl analogs of farnesyl diphosphate, and this biotransformation is dependent on subtle structural refinements. Two of the three cyclisation products are homo variants of germacrene D and germacrene D-4-ol while the third product reported contains a new bicyclic backbone for which no analogue in nature has been described so far. The findings on diphosphate activation are discussed and rationalised by relaxed force constants and dissociation energies computed at the DFT level of theory.

Abstract
Lewis acid-catalysed reactions of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with 1,3-disubstituted 5-aminopyrazoles were investigated. Under catalysis with gallium(III) chloride, products of the three-membered ring opening via a nucleophilic attack of the exocyclic amino group were obtained in a chemoselective manner. Oppositely, in the presence of scandium(III) triflate, products of either N-alkylation or C(4)-alkylation, or a mixture of both were formed. The products of the C(4) alkylation were transformed in one step into tetrahydropyrazolo[3,4-b]azepines that are attractive for medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

Abstract
Azepanes are important seven-membered heterocycles, which are present in numerous natural and synthetic compounds. However, the development of convergent synthetic methods to access them remains challenging. Herein, we report the Lewis acid catalyzed (4+3) annulative addition of aryl and amino donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with 2-aza-1,3-dienes. Densely substituted azepane derivatives were obtained in good to excellent yields and with high diastereoselectivity. The reaction occurred under mild conditions with ytterbium triflate as the catalyst. The use of copper triflate with a trisoxazoline (Tox) ligand led to an enantioselective transformation. The obtained cycloadducts were convenient substrates for a series of further modifications, showing the synthetic utility of these compounds.

Abstract
Two-step, ring-opening 1,3-carbothiolation of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes employing alkyl halides and in situ generated dithiocarbamates (from amines and CS2) has been demonstrated under mild conditions. The reaction is operationally simple and works with good functional group compatibility. Three new bonds including C-N, C-S, and C-C are formed in this 1,3-bifunctionalization strategy. Electron-poor olefins can also be used as electrophiles instead of alkyl halides. The use of enantiomerically pure D-A cyclopropane afforded enantiopure 1,3-carbothiolated product, thus demonstrating the stereospecificity of the reaction.

Abstract
gem-Difluorocyclopropane diester is disclosed as a new type of donor–acceptor cyclopropane, which smoothly participates in (3 + 2)-cycloadditions with various aldehydes and ketones. This work represents the first application of gem-difluorine substituents as an unconventional donor group for activating cyclopropane substrates in catalytic cycloaddition reactions. With this method, a wide variety of densely functionalized gem-difluorotetrahydrofuran skeletons, which are otherwise difficult to prepare, could be readily assembled in high yields under mild reaction conditions. Computational studies show that the cleavage of the C–C bond between the difluorine and diester moieties occurs upon a SN2-type attack of the carbonyl oxygen. A new type of donor–acceptor cyclopropane with gem-difluorine as an unconventional donor group undergoes (3 + 2)-cycloadditions with various aldehydes/ketones, affording densely functionalized gem-difluorotetrahydrofurans.![]()

Abstract
The cyclopropane ring features prominently in active pharmaceuticals, and this has spurred the development of synthetic methodologies that effectively incorporate this highly strained motif into such molecules. As such, elegant solutions to prepare densely functionalized cyclopropanes, particularly ones embedded within the core of complex structures, have become increasingly sought-after. Here we report the stereospecific synthesis of a set of cyclopropanes with vicinal quaternary stereocenters via the solvent-free solid-state photodenitrogenation of crystalline 1-pyrazolines. Density functional theory calculations at the M062X/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory were used to determine the origin of regioselectivity for the synthesis of the 1-pyrazolines; favorable in-phase frontier molecular orbital interactions are responsible for the observation of a single pyrazoline regioisomer. It was also shown that the loss of N2 may take place via a highly selective solid-state thermal reaction. Scalability of the solid-state photoreaction is enabled through aqueous nanocrystalline suspensions, making this method a "greener" alternative to effectively facilitate the construction of cyclopropane-containing molecular scaffolds.

Abstract
An expeditious synthetic route to access functionalized pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazoline scaffolds has been achieved via domino ring opening cyclization (DROC) reactions of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes and 2-amino(methyl)aniline derivatives. This novel iron catalyzed transformation is amenable to a wide range of substrates. Three new C-N bonds and two rings were sequentially constructed in this divergent one-pot process. The advantages of simple operation, high yields and general applicability make this procedure highly attractive and practical too.

Abstract
The concepts of bond strength and bond order are at the very heart of chemistry. Nevertheless, the study of local mechanical bond strengths in large polyatomic molecules is a nontrivial task. In a recent publication, Peters and Lehnert et al. [Inorg. Chem. 2020, 59 (20), 14967-14982] found a quite strong (reverse) dative Fe···B bond for a synthesized low-spin {FeNO}10 complex supported by an ambiphilic trisphosphineborane ligand. Their conclusion was, among other criteria, based on a surprisingly high Fe-B force constant of 1.56 mdyn/Å. Nevertheless, this high value might be based on numerical ambiguities of (rigid) real-space force constants, a flaw, that may affect many other combined spectroscopic and electronic structure studies.

Abstract
The reactivity of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes towards thioketenes was investigated. In a (3+2)-cycloaddition using Sc(OTf)3 as a Lewis acidic catalyst, the corresponding exocyclic thioenol ethers (2-methylidene tetrahydrothiophenes) were formed in moderate to good yields. Unsymmetrical thioketenes provided E/Z mixtures at the double bond, with the Z isomer being preferred.

Abstract
A ytterbium triflate-catalyzed diastereoselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition of quinoxalinones with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes is described. A series of tetrahydropyrrolo-quinoxalinone derivatives were obtained in high yields (up to 96%) with excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 46:1). Other medicinally important heterocycles like benzoxazinone, isoquinoxalinone, and dibenzoxazepine derivatives were also suitable for the desired annulation reaction. The current method is applicable for the scale-up reaction. Further, the utility of this annulation reaction is demonstrated by the synthesis of densely functionalized proline derivatives.

Abstract
We present (3+2)- and (4+2)-cycloadditions of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes with N-sulfinylamines and a sulfur diimide, along with a one-pot, two-step strategy for the formal insertion of HNSO2 into D-A cyclopropanes. These are rare examples of cycloadditions with D-A cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes whereby the 2π component consists of two different heteroatoms, thus leading to five- and six-membered rings containing adjacent heteroatoms.

Abstract
The kinetics of the ring-opening reactions of thiophenolates with geminal bis(acceptor)-substituted cyclopropanes in DMSO at 20 °C was monitored by photometric methods. The determined second-order rate constants of the SN 2 reactions followed linear relationships with Mayr nucleophilicity parameters (N/sN ) and Brønsted basicities (pKaH ) of the thiophenolates as well as with Hammett substituent parameters (σ) for groups attached to the thiophenolates. Phenyl-substituted cyclopropanes reacted by up to a factor of 15 faster than their unsubstituted analogues, in accord with the known activating effect of adjacent π-systems in SN 2 reactions. Variation of the electronic properties of substituents at the phenyl groups of the cyclopropanes gave rise to parabolic Hammett relationships. Thus, the inherent SN 2 reactivity of electrophilic cyclopropanes is activated by electron-rich π-systems because of the more advanced C1-C2 bond polarization in the transition state. On the other hand, electron-poor π-systems also lower the energetic barriers for the attack of anionic nucleophiles owing to attractive electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed oxidative dehydrogenative reaction of quinoline N-oxides with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes has been demonstrated to construct C2-alkylated quinolines containing a γ-keto diester motif. The use of molecular oxygen as an oxidant, excellent site-selectivity, and good functional group tolerance are the important features in this process. The preliminary mechanistic studies demonstrate that the catalyst plays a dual role as a Lewis acid and a redox catalyst.

Abstract
We describe a general electrochemical method to functionalize donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes and -butanes with arenes utilizing Friedel-Crafts-type reactivity. The catalyst-free strategy relies on the direct anodic oxidation of the strained carbocycles, which leads after C(sp3)-C(sp3) cleavage to radical cations that act as electrophiles for the arylation reaction. Broad reaction scopes in regard to cyclopropanes, cyclobutanes, and aromatic reaction partners are presented. Additionally, a plausible electrolysis mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
We describe the first electrochemical activation of D-A cyclopropanes and D-A cyclobutanes leading after C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) cleavage to the formation of highly reactive radical cations. This concept is utilized to formally insert molecular oxygen after direct or DDQ-assisted anodic oxidation of the strained carbocycles, delivering β- and γ-hydroxy ketones and 1,2-dioxanes electrocatalytically. Furthermore, insights into the mechanism of the oxidative process, obtained experimentally and by additional quantum-chemical calculations are presented. Abstract
A concise approach for the synthesis of substituted 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines via double nucleophilic addition of primary arylamines to ortho-alkynyl donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (o-ADACs) in the presence of a catalytic Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O and CuI/AgOTf system has been developed. Further applying this protocol, some of the derived malonates were converted into the corresponding monoesters under Krapcho decarboxylation reaction conditions. Thereafter, these esters were transformed into the respective acids and alcohols. In addition, multifunctionalized 4-(2,2,2-trifluoroacetyl) 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines were also obtained with excess TFAA.

Abstract
We propose a new concept of the triple role of protic ionic liquids with nucleophilic anions: a) a regenerable solvent, b) a Brønsted acid inducing diverse transformations via general acid catalysis, and c) a source of a nucleophile. The efficiency of this strategy was demonstrated using thiocyanate-based protic ionic liquids for the ring-opening of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. A wide variety of activated cyclopropanes were found to react with 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate under mild metal-free conditions via unusual nitrogen attack of the ambident thiocyanate ion on the electrophilic center of the three-membered ring affording pyrrolidine-2-thiones bearing donor and acceptor substituents at the C(5) and C(3) atoms, respectively, in a single time-efficient step. The ability of 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate to serve as a triplex reagent was exemplarily illustrated by (4+2)-annulation with 1-acyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopropane, epoxide ring-opening and other organic transformations.

Abstract
A new ionic cyclopropanation process involving the addition of diazo esters to donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DAC) activated by GaCl3 has been developed. The reactions occur via 1,2-zwitterionic gallium complexes with elimination of nitrogen in all cases to give 1,1,2,3-tetrasubstituted cyclopropanes as the main products. Also, a number of related processes with the formation of various polysubstituted cyclopropanes, alkenes, and cyclobutanes, including products of multiple diazo ester addition, have been developed. Obtained by the developed method tetrasubstituted cyclopropanes are activated cyclopropanes such as DAC and can be used for further synthesis in this capacity. Their new reaction with benzaldehyde promoted by TiCl4 and involving one of the additional functional groups has been demonstrated, which leads to five-membered lactones. The mechanisms of the occurring processes, as well as the structures and stereochemistry of a rich range of products formed, are discussed in detail.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes have gained increased momentum over the past two decades. The use of these highly strained three-membered entities paved the way to innovative and original transformations yielding complex cyclic and acyclic architectures that otherwise might be difficult to address. Since the fundamentals were laid by Wenkert and Reissig in the late 1970s, the field has flourished impressively including asymmetric transformations as well as elegant synthetic applications in the construction of natural occurring products. In this Account, we aim to highlight especially our efforts in the context of an efficient access to sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds, of either cyclic or open-chain nature, by exploiting D-A cyclopropane chemistry. Light will be shed on the three fundamental transformations: ring-opening reactions, cycloadditions, and rearrangements. Our synthetic endeavors started back in 2011 guided by quantum chemical studies to obtain 3,3'-linked bisthiophenes along with an unprecedented rearrangement delivering sulfur- and selenium-containing cagelike scaffolds. Inspired by these surprising results, we further deepened our efforts to the construction of new sulfur-carbon and selenium-carbon bonds within the context of D-A cyclopropane chemistry. In the first instance, we capitalized on the great versatility of organosulfur and organoselenium compounds regarding their amphiphilic character to act either as nucleophilic or as electrophilic species. By such an approach, ring-openings via a nucleophilic attack of sulfenyl and selenyl halides furnished 1,3-bishalochalcogenated products. A similar protocol led us to a desymmetrization reaction of meso-cyclopropyl carbaldehydes employing novel chiral imidazolidinone organocatalysts. In contrast, electrophilic sulfur was supplied by N-(arylthio)succinimide substrates to access thiolated γ-amino acid derivatives and their selenium equivalents.Combining the highly reactive thiocarbonyl compounds and vicinal donor-acceptor substituted cyclopropanes opened new vistas in the field of atom-economic cycloaddition reactions to build up sulfur-containing heterocycles of various sizes. The first systematic study of such transformations was made by our group in 2017 leading to highly decorated thiolanes, whereas an intramolecular approach furnished thia-[n.2.1]bicyclic ring systems. Our investigations were then successfully extended to the synthesis of tetrahydroselenophenes by using capricious selenoketones. Recently, we were able to yield the unsaturated analogues, selenophenes, by a (3 + 2)-cycloaddition of D-A cyclopropanes with ammonium selenocyanates followed by oxidation. The formal insertion of thioketenes was realized by employing 3-thioxocyclobutanones as surrogates for disubstituted thioketenes to obtain 2-substituted tetrahydrothiophenes bearing a semicyclic double bond via a (3 + 2) spiroannulation/(2 + 2) cycloreversion sequence. Even the formation of seven-membered S-heterocycles was realized by (4 + 3)-cycloaddition processes. In 2016, we demonstrated the synthesis of benzo-fused dithiepines from in situ generated ortho-bisthioquinones, whereas the utilization of thia-Michael systems as a hetero-4π-component delivered tetrahydrothiepine derivatives containing just one sulfur atom embedded in the ring system.

Abstract
A convenient route to 3- and 5-ylidenebutenolides from readily available cis-2-acylcyclopropane-1-carboxylates is described. Upon exposure to TfOH, synergistic activation of the vicinal acceptors in cis-2-acylcyclopropane-1-carboxylates generates highly strained bicyclic oxocarbenium ion intermediates, which undergo the ring-opening/aryl shift/deprotonation cascade process to form the 3- or 5-ylidenebutenolides depending on the acyl group. On the other hand, the corresponding trans isomers, from which it is difficult to form such oxocarbenium ions, are inactive under the same conditions.

Abstract
AbstractA method has been developed for the synthesis of substituted β-styrylmalonates by conversion of 2-arylcyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylates (ACDCs) in the presence of gallium trichloride into the corresponding 1,2-zwitterionic intermediates or (2-arylethylidene)malonates, followed by treatment with pyridine at room temperature leading to an isomerization of the emerging double bond. This method allows one to expand these reactions to include ACDCs with acceptor substituents at the aromatic ring.

One approach consists in the use of cycloaddition reactions which notably results in high selectivities and atom-economy. To this end, cyclopropanes are ideal substrates since they can provide readily functionalized three- or five-carbon synthons. Herein we report advances made in cycloaddition reactions of cyclopropanes towards the synthesis of medium-sized carbocycles via transition metal catalysis or Lewis acid catalysis.
