Abstract
Enantioselective three-component difunctionalization of alkenes with boron reagents represents an attractive strategy for assembling three-dimensional chiral organoboron compounds. However, regio- and enantiocontrol comprise the pivot challenges in these transformations, which predominantly require the use of activated conjugated alkenes. Herein, by utilizing various carbonyl directing groups, including amides, sulfinamides, ketones, and esters, we succeed in realizing a nickel-catalyzed 1,2-borylalkynylation of unactivated alkenes to enable the simultaneous incorporation of a boron entity and an sp-fragment across the double bond. The products contain boryl, alkynyl, and carbonyl functional groups with orthogonal synthetic reactivities, offering three handles for further derivatization to access valuable intermediates. The utility of this ligand-enabled asymmetric protocol has been highlighted through the late-stage decoration of drug-relevant molecules.

Abstract
ConspectusChain-walking offers extensive opportunities for innovating synthetic methods that involve constructing chemical bonds at unconventional sites. This approach provides previously inaccessible retrosynthetic disconnections in organic synthesis. Through chain-walking, transition metal-catalyzed alkene difunctionalization reactions can take place in a 1,n-addition (n ≠ 2) mode. Unlike classical 1,2-regioselective difunctionalization reactions, there remains a scarcity of reports regarding migratory patterns. Moreover, the range of olefins utilized in these studies is quite limited.About five years ago, our research group embarked on a project aimed at developing valuable migratory difunctionalization reactions of alkenes through chain-walking. Our focus was on carboboration of alkenes utilizing nickel catalysis. The reaction commences with the migratory insertion of an olefin into a Ni-Bpin species. Subsequently, a thermodynamically stable alkyl nickel complex is generated through a chain-walking process. This complex then couples with a carbon-based electrophile, leading to the formation of an alkylboron compound. It is worth highlighting that the success of these transformations relies significantly on the utilization of a bisnitrogen-based ligand and LiOMe as a B2pin2 activator. Synthetically, these migratory carboboration reactions establish a robust platform for the rapid and efficient synthesis of a wide range of structurally diverse organoboron compounds, which are not facially accessed by conventional methods. The incorporation of a versatile boron group introduces a wealth of possibilities for subsequent diversifications, significantly enhancing the value of the resulting products and allowing for the creation of a broader range of valuable derivatives and applications. This Account provides a comprehensive overview of our research efforts and advancements in the field of migratory carboboration of unactivated alkenes using nickel catalysis. We begin by outlining the development of a series of 1,1-regioselective carboboration reactions of terminal alkenes. A significant focus is placed on the initial integration of boronate, which not only triggers the formation of thermodynamically stable metal species but also exerts control over remote stereochemistry in reactions involving substituted methylenecyclohexenes. Continuing our exploration, remarkable success is achieved in 1,3-regio- and cis-stereoselectivity when dealing with cyclic alkenes. Remarkably, nickel chain-walking catalysis enables heterocyclic alkenes to be viable coupling partners within our transformations. Moreover, it grants us the ability to achieve regioselectivity for cyclohexenes that was previously unattainable, thus expanding the horizons of regiochemical control in these reactions. Lastly, we present the evolution of ligand-modulated regiodivergent carboboration of allylarenes. By gaining insights into the underlying mechanisms driving regiodivergence, we lay a strong foundation for tackling challenges related to selecting specific sites in chain-walking reactions, especially when dealing with multiple stable factors. We anticipate that our findings, coupled with the mechanistic insights we've gained, will not only advance the realm of nickel chain-walking catalysis but also contribute to the broader understanding of selectivity control in reactions of this nature. This advancement will also catalyze the synthesis of intricate functional molecules, contributing to the creation of complex and valuable compounds in the realm of organic chemistry.

Abstract
The merger of electrochemistry and transition metal catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool to join two electrophiles in an enantioselective manner. However, the development of enantioselective electroreductive cross-couplings of olefins remains a challenge. Inspired by the advantages of the synergistic use of electrochemistry with nickel catalysis, we present here a Ni-catalyzed enantioselective electroreductive cross-coupling of acrylates with aryl halides and alkyl bromides, which affords chiral α-aryl carbonyls in good to excellent enantioselectivity. Additionally, this catalytic reaction can be applied to (hetero)aryl chlorides, which is difficult to achieve by other methods. The combination of cyclic voltammetry analysis with electrode potential studies suggests that the NiI species activates aryl halides by oxidative addition and alkyl bromides by single-electron transfer.

Abstract
The Ni-catalyzed alkylboration of endocyclic olefins is a stereo- and regioselective approach for the synthesis of boron-containing compounds. We report a detailed density functional theory (DFT) study to elucidate the mechanism and origins of the stereo-, chemo-, and regioselectivity of alkylboration of endocyclic olefins enabled by nickel catalysis. The alkylboration proceeds via the migratory insertion of alkenes, β-H elimination of the Ni(II) complex, subsequent migratory insertion leading to a new Ni(II) complex, combined with an alkyl radical, and reductive eliminations. The electronic effects of the endocyclic olefins synergistically control the regioselectivity toward the C1- and C2-position boration. In C1-position boration, a more electron-deficient carbon atom tends to combine with an electron-rich -Bpin group and leads to C1-position boration products. The stereoselectivity is influenced by the solvent effect, and the interaction between the substrate and Ni-catalyzed groups, the low-polarity solvent 1,4-dioxane, and a favorable steric hindrance effect result in the cis-alkylboration product. Chemoselectivity toward 1,3-alkylboration results from the steric hindrance effects of the -Bpin group.

Abstract
The addition of a nitrogen-based functional group to alkenes via a direct catalytic method is an attractive way of synthesizing value-added amides. The regioselective hydroamidation of unactivated alkenes is considered one of the easiest ways to achieve this goal. Herein, we report the NiH-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov intermolecular hydroamidation of unactivated alkenes enabled by using 2,9-dibutylphenathroline (diBuphen) as the ligand. This protocol provides a platform for the direct synthesis of over 90 structurally diverse N-alkyl amides using dioxazolones, which can be easily derived from abundant carboxylic acid feedstocks. This method succeeds for both terminal and internal unactivated alkenes and some natural products. Mechanistic studies including DFT calculations reveal an initial reversible insertion/elimination of the [NiH] to the alkene, followed by the irreversible amidation to furnish the N-alkyl amides. By crossover experiments and deuterium labeling studies, the observed anti-Markovnikov regioselectivities are suggested to be controlled by the sterical environment of the coupling reaction.

Abstract
Alkenes represent one of the most useful building blocks for organic synthesis, owing to their abundance and versatile reactivity. Transition metal (Pd, Cu, Co, Ni, Fe, etc.) catalyzed difunctionalization of alkenes provides efficient access to substituted molecules from readily available alkenes by installing functional groups across their carbon-carbon double bonds. Particularly, Nickel-based catalytic complexes have attracted a great deal of attention. This is because they are prone to undergoing oxidative addition and slow β-hydride elimination, and can access both two-electron and radical pathways. Numerous elegant Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methods, e.g., (hetero)arylboration, alkenylboration, alkylboration and alkynylboration of alkenes, have been developed with broad scopes and a high tolerance to a variety of functional groups. Therefore, the Ni-catalyzed carboboration of alkenes has become an efficient synthetic protocol to deliver substituted compounds by the cross-coupling of alkenes, electrophiles, and B2Pin2. Despite this progress, a number of challenging issues remaining in the field include broadening the types of carboboration reactions, especially the asymmetric ones, diversifying electrophile types (which is limited to halogens for now) and gaining profound insight into the reaction mechanisms. This review summarizes the recent progress in this emerging field from the literature published since 2018. It will provide the scientific community with convenience to access collective information and to accelerate their further research in order to broaden the scope of methodology and application in drug discovery programs.

Abstract
Substituted six-membered cyclic hydrocarbons are common constituents of biologically active compounds. Although methods for the synthesis of thermodynamically favored, disubstituted cyclohexanes are well established, a reliable and modular protocol for the synthesis of their stereoisomers is still elusive. Herein, we report a general strategy for the modular synthesis of disubstituted cyclohexanes with excellent kinetic stereocontrol from readily accessible substituted methylenecyclohexanes by the implementation of chain-walking catalysis. Mechanistically, the initial introduction of a sterically demanding boron ester group adjacent to the cyclohexane is key to guiding the stereochemical outcome. The synthetic potential of this methodology has been highlighted in late-stage modification of complex bioactive molecules and in comparison with current cross-coupling techniques.

Regio- and enantioselective remote hydroarylation using a ligand-relay strategy. Nat Commun 2022; 13:2471. Abstract
The design of a single complicated chiral ligand to well-promote each step of an asymmetric cascade reaction is sometimes a formidable challenge in transition metal catalysis. In this work, a highly regio- and enantioselective Ni-catalysed migratory hydroarylation relay process has been achieved with the combination of two simple ligands, one which accomplishes chain-walking and the other causing asymmetric arylation. This formal asymmetric C(sp3)−H arylation provides direct access to a wide range of structurally diverse chiral 1,1-diarylalkanes, a structural unit found in a number of bioactive molecules. The value of this strategy was further demonstrated by the Ni-catalysed migratory asymmetric 1,3-arylboration. Migratory alkene isomerizations and cross-coupling reactions are both possible under nickel catalysis, but usually require different conditions. Here the authors show a combined protocol to isomerize a double bond and then, via an in-situ exchange of ligands, perform an enantioselective C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling.

Abstract
A novel protocol is established for the long-standing challenge of stereoselective geminal bisglycosylations of saccharides. The merger of PPh3 as a traceless glycosidic leaving group and 1,2-boronate migration enables the simultaneous introduction of C-C and C-B bonds at the anomeric stereogenic center of furanoses and pyranoses. The power of this method is showcased by a set of site-selective modifications of glycosylation products for the construction of bioactive conjugates and skeletons. A scarce metal-free 1,1-difunctionalization process of alkenes is also concomitantly demonstrated.

Abstract
While chiral allylic organophosphorus compounds are widely utilized in asymmetric catalysis and for accessing bioactive molecules, their synthetic methods are still very limited. We report the development of asymmetric nickel/Brønsted acid dual-catalyzed hydrophosphinylation of 1,3-dienes with phosphine oxides. This reaction is characterized by an inexpensive chiral catalyst, broad substrate scope, and high regio- and enantioselectivity. This study allows the construction of chiral allylic phosphine oxides in a highly economic and efficient manner. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest that the 1,3-diene insertion into the chiral Ni-H species is a highly regioselective process and the formation of the chiral C-P bond is an irreversible step.

Abstract
Whereas there is a significant interest in the rapid construction of diversely substituted saturated heterocycles, direct and modular access is currently limited to the mono-, 2,3-, or 3,4-substitution pattern. This Communication describes the straightforward and modular construction of 2,4-substituted saturated heterocycles from readily available materials in a highly stereo- and regioselective manner, which sets the stage for numerous readily accessible drug motifs. The strategy relies on chain walking catalysis.

Abstract
A novel nickel-catalyzed asymmetric 1,2-vinylboration reaction has been developed to afford benzylic alkenylboration products with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities by using a chiral bisoxazoline ligand. Under optimized conditions, a wide variety of chiral 2-boryl-1,1-arylvinylalkanes are efficiently prepared from readily available olefins and vinyl halides in the presence of bis(pinacolato)diboron as the boron source in a mild and easy-to-operate manner. This three-component cascade protocol furnishes exceptional chemo- and stereoselectivity, and its usefulness is illustrated by its application in asymmetric modifications of several structurally complex natural products and pharmaceuticals. Abstract
Synthesis of organosilanes from alkenes is a very important topic owing to their wide applications. A Ni/Cu dual metal-catalyzed arylsilylation of terminal alkenes, featuring migratory selectivity, has been developed. A wide diversity of aliphatic silanes have been prepared from terminal alkenes, aryl halides and Suginome's reagent. This protocol is highlighted by excellent regioselectivity, mild reaction conditions and good functional group tolerance. In addition to benzylic positions, carbon-carbon bonds can also be constructed at allylic positions. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the copper cocatalyst promotes the transmetalation of Suginome's reagent, and the addition of a PyrOx ligand inhibits the formation of side-products from the carbon-Heck pathway. Moreover, studies toward the nature of the PyrOx ligand revealed that the steric hindrance of the oxazoline moiety greatly affects the chain-walking process, but not the arylation step.

Abstract
Through the combination of a Ni-catalyzed alkene alkenylboration followed by hydrogenation, the synthesis of congested Csp3–Csp3-bonds can be achieved. Conditions have been identified that allow for the use of both alkenyl-bromides and -triflates. In addition, the hydrogenation creates another opportunity for stereocontrol, thus allowing access to multiple stereoisomers of the product. Finally, the method is demonstrated in the streamlined synthesis of a biologically relevant molecule. Through the combination of a Ni-catalyzed alkene alkenylboration followed by hydrogenation, the synthesis of congested Csp3–Csp3-bonds can be achieved.![]()

Abstract
Asymmetric multicomponent reactions allow stitching several functional groups in an enantioselective and atom economical manner. The introduction of boron-based reagents as a multicomponent coupling partner has its own merits. In addition to being non-toxic and highly stable, organoboron compounds can be easily converted to other functional groups in a stereoselective manner. In the last decade several transition metal catalyzed asymmetric multicomponent strategies have been evolved using boron based reagents. This review will discuss the merits and scope of multicomponent strategies based on their difference in the reaction mechanism and transition metals involved.

Abstract
Despite remarkable recent advances in transition-metal-catalyzed C(sp3)−C cross-coupling reactions, there remain challenging bond formations. One class of such reactions include the formation of tertiary-C(sp3)−C bonds, presumably due to unfavorable steric interactions and competing isomerizations of tertiary alkyl metal intermediates. Reported herein is a Ni-catalyzed migratory 3,3-difluoroallylation of unactivated alkyl bromides at remote tertiary centers. This approach enables the facile construction of otherwise difficult to prepare all-carbon quaternary centers. Key to the success of this transformation is an unusual remote functionalization via chain walking to the most sterically hindered tertiary C(sp3) center of the substrate. Preliminary mechanistic and radical trapping studies with primary alkyl bromides suggest a unique mode of tertiary C-radical generation through chain-walking followed by Ni–C bond homolysis. This strategy is complementary to the existing coupling protocols with tert-alkyl organometallic or -alkyl halide reagents, and it enables the expedient formation of quaternary centers from easily available starting materials. Formation of tertiary C(sp3)-C bonds is a formidable challenge due to steric interactions and low barriers for isomerization of intermediates. Here, the authors show a Ni-catalyzed migratory 3,3-difluoroallylation of unactivated alkyl bromides at remote tertiary carbon centers.

Abstract
Migration of metals along a carbon chain is triggered by two of the most common organometallic elementary steps - β-hydride (β-H) elimination and alkene hydrometallation. This process heralds a new future for creating bonds at carbon sites that fall outside the tenets of the conventional wisdom for reactivity and bond formation, and provides an opportunity to leverage β-H elimination to advance the very reaction of alkene difunctionalization it is intrinsically predestined to disrupt. Almost four decades since its genesis, the early adventure for alkene difunctionalization by metal migration was sporadic, and its later development went on a hiatus primarily due to original impetus on arresting β-H elimination for vicinal alkene difunctionalization. With the recent surge on alkene difunctionalization, efforts have been gradually shifting to harnessing the process of β-H elimination to difunctionalize alkenes at sites other than the classical vicinal carbons, termed henceforth nonclassical reaction sites for pedagogical simplicity. In this review article, we extricate and examine the origin and the development of such reactions over the years. This review covers a wide range of reactions for the difunctionalization of alkenes at geminal (1,1), allylic (1,3) and remote (1,n) carbon sites with a variety of coupling partners. These reactions have enabled engineering of complex molecular frameworks with the generation of new carbon-carbon (C-C)/C-C, C-C/C-heteroatom (halogens, O, N, B) and C-B/C-B bonds. The development of these unique transformations is also presented with mechanistic hypotheses and experimental evidences put forward by researchers. Judged by the number of reports emerging recently, it is now strikingly evident that the field of alkene difunctionalization by metal migration has begun to gain momentum, which holds a great future prospect to develop into a synthetic method of enormous potential.

Abstract
During the past decade, many research groups have described catalytic methods for 1,2-carboboration, allowing access to structurally complex organoboronates from alkenes. Various transition metals, especially copper, palladium, and nickel, have been widely used in these reactions. This review summarizes advances in this field, with a special focus on the catalytic cycles involved in different metal-catalyzed carboboration reactions, as well as the regio- and stereochemical consequences of the underlying mechanisms. 1,2-Carboboration of other unsaturated systems, such as alkynes and allenes, are outside of the scope of this review.

Abstract
Olefins are a very important class of compounds and broadly used in the construction of various synthetic building blocks and practical industrial production. The difunctionalization of olefins provides one of the most powerful methods for the C-C or C-X bond formation with a rapid increase of the molecular complexity and synthetic value economically and effectively. Compared with the vigorous growth and abundant achievements of 1,2-difunctionalization of olefins, 1,1-difunctionalization is a relatively emerging and inadequately exploited research direction, despite being tremendously attractive from synthetic perspectives. In this minireview, we provide a brief overview of the advancements of 1,1-difunctionalization of olefins in the past twenty years, and prospects of future developments.

Abstract
Substantial advances in enantioconvergent C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation reactions have been made in recent years through the use of transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of racemic secondary alkyl electrophiles with organometallic reagents. Herein, we report a general process for the asymmetric construction of alkyl-alkyl bonds adjacent to heteroatoms, namely, a nickel-catalyzed enantioconvergent reductive hydroalkylation of olefins with α-heteroatom phosphorus or sulfur alkyl electrophiles. Including the use of readily available olefins, this reaction has considerable advantages, such as mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility, making it a desirable alternative to traditional electrophile-nucleophile cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed 1,2-carboboration of alkenes is emerging as a useful method for chemical synthesis. Prior studies have been limited to only the incorporation of aryl groups. In this manuscript, a method for the 1,2-benzylboration of unactivated alkenes is presented. The reaction combines readily available alkenes, diboron reagents and benzylchlorides to generate synthetically versatile products with control of stereochemistry. The utility of the products as well as the mechanistic details of the process are also presented.

Abstract
A novel nickel/Brønsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric hydroamination of acyclic 1,3-dienes has been established. A wide array of primary and secondary amines can be transformed into allylic amines with high yields and high enantioselectivities under very mild conditions. Moreover, our method is compatible with various functional groups and heterocycles, allowing for late-stage functionalization of biologically active complex molecules. Remarkably, this protocol exhibits good chemoselectivity with respect to amines bearing two different nucleophilic sites. Mechanistic studies reveal that the enantioselective carbon-nitrogen bond-forming step is reversible.
