Heterocyclization Strategy for Construction of Linear Conjugated Polymers: Efficient Metal‐Free Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction

High-Performance Room Temperature Ammonia Sensors Based on Pure Organic Molecules Featuring B-N Covalent Bond

Exploring organic semiconductor gas sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity is crucial for the development of sensor technology. Herein, for the first time, a promising chemiresistive organic polymer P-BNT based on a novel π-conjugated triarylboron building block is reported, showcasing an excellent responsivity over 30 000 (Ra/Rg) against 40 ppm of NH3, which is ≈3300 times higher than that of its B-N organic small molecule BN-H. More importantly, a molecular induction strategy to weaken the bond dissociation energy between polymer and NH3 caused by strong acid-base interaction is further executed to optimize the response and recovery time. As a result, the BN-H/P-BNT system with rapid response and recovery times can still exhibit a high responsivity of 718, which is among the highest reported NH3 chemiresistive sensors. Supported by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, it is revealed that the N-H fractions in BN-H small molecule promoted the charge distribution on phenyl groups, which increases charge delocalization and is more conducive to gas adsorption in such molecular systems. Notably, these distinctive small molecules also promoted charge transfer and enhanced electron concentration of the P-BNT sensing polymer, thus achieving superior B-N-containing organic molecules with excellent sensing performance.

Solvent Effects on Metal-free Covalent Organic Frameworks in Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Binding water molecules to polar sites in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is inevitable, but the corresponding solvent effects in electrocatalytic process have been largely overlooked. Herein, we investigate the solvent effects on COFs for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Our designed COFs incorporated different kinds of nitrogen atoms (imine N, pyridine N, and phenazine N), enabling tunable interactions with water molecules. These interactions play a crucial role in modulating electronic states and altering the catalytic centers within the COFs. Among the synthesized COFs, the one with pyridine N atoms exhibits the highest activity, with characterized by a half-wave potential of 0.78 V and a mass activity of 0.32 A mg-1, which surpass those from other metal-free COFs. Theoretical calculations further reveal that the enhanced activity can be attributed to the stronger binding ability of *OOH intermediates to the carbon atoms adjacent to the pyridine N sites. This work sheds light on the significance of considering solvent effects on COFs in electrocatalytic systems, providing valuable insights into their design and optimization for improved performance.

Positional Thiophene Isomerization: A Geometric Strategy for Precisely Regulating the Electronic State of Covalent Organic Frameworks to Boost Oxygen Reduction

With the oxygen conversion efficiency of metal-free carbon-based fuel cells dramatically improved, the building blocks of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) raised principal concerns on the catalytic active sites with indistinct electronic states. Herein, to address this issue, we demonstrate COFs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by regulating the edge-hanging thiophene units, and the molecular geometries are further modulated via positional thiophene isomerization strategy, affording isomeric COF-α with 2-substitution and COF-β with 3-substitution on the frameworks. The electronic states and intermediate adsorption ability are well-regulated through geometric modification, resulting in controllable chemical activity and local density of π-electrons. Notably, the introduction of thiophene units with different substitution positions into a pristine pure carbon-based COF model COF-Ph achieves excellent activity with a half-wave potential of 0.76 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, which is higher than most of those metal-free or metal-based electrocatalysts. Utilizing the combination of theoretical prediction and in situ Raman spectra, we show that the isomeric thiophene skeleton (COF-α and COF-β) can induce the dangling unit activation, accurately identifying the pentacyclic-carbon (thiophene α-position) adjacent to sulfur atom as active sites. The results suggest that the isomeric dangling groups in COFs are suitable for the ORR with promising geometry construction.

Confined Synthesis of Dual-Atoms Within Pores of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts exhibit higher reactivity and selectivity than the single-atom catalysts. The pyrolysis of bimetal salt precursors is the most typical method for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts; however, the finiteness of bimetal salts limits the variety of dual-atomic catalysts. In this study, a confined synthesis strategy for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts is developed. Owing to the in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in the pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the migration and aggregation of metal atoms are suppressed adequately during the pyrolysis process. The resultant catalyst contains abundant Zn─Co dual atomic sites with 2.8 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Co. The catalyst exhibits high reactivity toward oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V, which is superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Zn atoms in the Zn─Co dual atomic sites promote the formation of intermediate OOH*, and thus contribute to high catalytic performance. This study provides new insights into the design of dual-atom catalysts using COFs.

Charging modulation of the pyridine nitrogen of covalent organic frameworks for promoting oxygen reduction reaction

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are ideal templates for constructing metal-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction due to their highly tuneable skeletons and controllable porous channels. However, the development of highly active sites within COFs remains challenging due to their limited electron-transfer capabilities and weak binding affinities for reaction intermediates. Herein, we constructed highly active catalytic centres by modulating the electronic states of the pyridine nitrogen atoms incorporated into the frameworks of COFs. By incorporating different pyridine units (such as pyridine, ionic pyridine, and ionic imidazole units), we tuned various properties including dipole moments, reductive ability, hydrophilicity, and binding affinities towards reaction intermediates. Notably, the ionic imidazole COF (im-PY-BPY-COF) exhibited greater activity than the neutral COF (PY-BPY-COF) and ionic pyridine COF (ion-PY-BPY-COF). Specifically, im-PY-BPY-COF demonstrated a half-wave potential of 0.80 V in 0.1 M KOH, outperforming other metal-free COFs. Theoretical calculations and in situ synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the carbon atoms in the ionic imidazole rings improved the activity by facilitating binding of the intermediate OOH* and promoting the desorption of OH*. This study provides new insights into the design of highly active metal-like COF catalysts.

Recent Advances in Mechanistic Understanding of Metal-Free Carbon Thermocatalysis and Electrocatalysis with Model Molecules

Metal-free carbon, as the most representative heterogeneous metal-free catalysts, have received considerable interests in electro- and thermo-catalytic reactions due to their impressive performance and sustainability. Over the past decade, well-designed carbon catalysts with tunable structures and heteroatom groups coupled with various characterization techniques have proposed numerous reaction mechanisms. However, active sites, key intermediate species, precise structure-activity relationships and dynamic evolution processes of carbon catalysts are still rife with controversies due to the monotony and limitation of used experimental methods. In this Review, we summarize the extensive efforts on model catalysts since the 2000s, particularly in the past decade, to overcome the influences of material and structure limitations in metal-free carbon catalysis. Using both nanomolecule model and bulk model, the real contribution of each alien species, defect and edge configuration to a series of fundamentally important reactions, such as thermocatalytic reactions, electrocatalytic reactions, were systematically studied. Combined with in situ techniques, isotope labeling and size control, the detailed reaction mechanisms, the precise 2D structure-activity relationships and the rate-determining steps were revealed at a molecular level. Furthermore, the outlook of model carbon catalysis has also been proposed in this work.

n-Type boron β-diketone-containing conjugated polymers for high-performance room temperature ammonia sensors

Organic semiconductor (OSC) gas sensors with good mechanical flexibility have received considerable attention as commercial and wearable devices. However, due to poor resistance to moisture and low conductivity, the improvement in the sensing capability of individual OSCs is limited. Reported here is a promising pathway to construct a series of conjugated organic polymers (COPs) with well-defined pyrimidine (Py-COP) or boron β-diketone (BF-COP) units. Unlike traditional metal- or carbon-based hybrid materials, the developed COPs can provide abundant absorption sites for gaseous analytes. As a result, the as-prepared BF-COP results in an excellent sensing response of over 1500 (Ra/Rg) toward 40 ppm of NH3 at room temperature, which is the highest value among those of pristine COPs as n-type sensing materials. Notably, they can maintain their initial sensing responses for two months and 90% relative humidity resistance. Combining the results of in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, the β-diketone skeleton is found to activate the surface electronic environment, verifying that the electron-deficient B ← O groups are adsorption centers. The B/N-heterocyclic decoration effectively modulates the redox properties and electronic interactions, as well as perturbs charge transfer in typical π-conjugated COPs. These results offer insight into developing highly efficient OSC gas sensors, which potentially have broadened sensing applications in the areas of organoboron chemistry.

Engineering organic polymers as emerging sustainable materials for powerful electrocatalysts

Cost-effective and high-efficiency catalysts play a central role in various sustainable electrochemical energy conversion technologies that are being developed to generate clean energy while reducing carbon emissions, such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide conversion. In this context, a recent climax in the exploitation of advanced earth-abundant catalysts has been witnessed for diverse electrochemical reactions involved in the above mentioned sustainable pathways. In particular, polymer catalysts have garnered considerable interest and achieved substantial progress very recently, mainly owing to their pyrolysis-free synthesis, highly tunable molecular composition and microarchitecture, readily adjustable electrical conductivity, and high stability. In this review, we present a timely and comprehensive overview of the latest advances in organic polymers as emerging materials for powerful electrocatalysts. First, we present the general principles for the design of polymer catalysts in terms of catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, mass transfer, and stability. Then, the state-of-the-art engineering strategies to tailor the polymer catalysts at both molecular (i.e., heteroatom and metal atom engineering) and macromolecular (i.e., chain, topology, and composition engineering) levels are introduced. Particular attention is paid to the insightful understanding of structure-performance correlations and electrocatalytic mechanisms. The fundamentals behind these critical electrochemical reactions, including the oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and hydrogen oxidation reaction, as well as breakthroughs in polymer catalysts, are outlined as well. Finally, we further discuss the current challenges and suggest new opportunities for the rational design of advanced polymer catalysts. By presenting the progress, engineering strategies, insightful understandings, challenges, and perspectives, we hope this review can provide valuable guidelines for the future development of polymer catalysts.

Preparation of high-strength photochromic alginate fibers based on the study of flame-retardant properties

Color-changing fibers have attracted much attention for their wide applications in camouflage, security warnings, and anti-counterfeiting. The inorganic color-changing material tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been widely investigated for its good stability, controllability, and ease of synthesis. In this study, photochromic alginate fibers (WO3@Ca-Alg) were prepared by incorporating UV-responsive hybrid tungsten trioxide nanoparticles in the fiber production process. The prepared photochromic alginate fibers changed from white to dark blue after 30 min of UV irradiation and returned to their original color after 64 h. It can be seen that WO3@Ca-Alg has the advantage of long color duration. The strength of this fiber reached 2.61 cN/dtex and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) was 40.9 %, which indicates that the fiber exhibited mechanical resistance and flame-retardant properties. After the cross-linking of WO3@Ca-Alg by sodium tetraborate, a new core-shell structure was generated, which was able to encapsulate tungsten trioxide in it, thus reducing the amount of tungsten trioxide loss, and its salt and washing resistance was greatly improved. This photochromic alginate fiber can be mass produced and spun into yarn.

Precise Modulation of Carbon Activity Sites in Metal-Free Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Metal-free carbon-based materials have gained recognition as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in new environmentally-friendly electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The presence of effective active centers is crucial for achieving productive ORR. In this study, we present the synthesis of two metal-free dibenzo[a,c]phenazine-based covalent organic frameworks (DBP-COFs), specifically JUC-650 and JUC-651, which serve as ORR electrocatalysts. Among them, JUC-650 demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline electrolytes, exhibiting an onset potential of 0.90 V versus RHE and a half-wave potential of 0.72 V versus RHE. Consequently, JUC-650 stands out as one of the most outstanding metal-free COF-based ORR electrocatalysts report to date. Experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations confirm that modulation of the frameworks' electronic configuration allows for the reduction of adsorption energy at the Schiff-base carbon active sites, leading to more efficient ORR processes. Moreover, the DBP-COFs can be assembled as excellent air cathode catalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZAB), rivaling the performance of commercial Pt/C. This study provides valuable insights for the development of efficient metal-free organoelectrocatalysts through precise regulation of active site strategies.

Tuning Electronic State and Charge Transport in B←N-Containing 2D Polymer Heterostructures with Efficient Photocatalytic Performance

Linear-conjugated polymers (LCPs) are excellent semiconductor photocatalysts. However, its inherent amorphous structures and simple electron transport channels restrict efficient photoexcited charge separation and transfer. Herein, "2D conjugated engineering" is employed to design high-crystalline polymer photocatalysts with multichannel charge transport by introducing alkoxyphenyl sidechains. The electronic state structure and electron transport pathways of the LCPs are investigated using experimental and theoretical calculations. Consequently, the 2D B←N-containing polymers (2DPBN) exhibit excellent photoelectric characteristics, which enable the efficient separation of electron-hole and rapidly transfer photogenerated carriers to the catalyst surface for efficient catalytic reactions. Significantly, the further hydrogen evolution of 2DPBN-4F heterostructures can be achieved by increasing the fluorine content of the backbones. This study highlights that the rational design of LCP photocatalysts is an effective strategy to spur further interest in photofunctional polymer material applications.

Fabrication of a lamellar alginate-based aerogel decorated with carbon quantum dots for controlled fluorescence behaviors

This study aimed to construct an alginate aerogel doped with carbon quantum dots and investigate the fluorescence properties of the composites. The carbon quantum dots with the highest fluorescence intensity were obtained using a methanol-water ratio of 1 : 1, a reaction time of 90 minutes, and a reaction temperature of 160 °C. The fluorescent carbon quantum dot sodium alginate-based aerogel (FCSA) obtained by compounding alginate and carbon quantum dots exhibited excellent fluorescence properties when the concentration of nano-carbon quantum dot solution was 10.0 vol%. By incorporating nano-carbon quantum dots, the fluorescence properties of the lamellar alginate aerogel can be easily and efficiently adjusted. The alginate aerogel decorated with nano-carbon quantum dots exhibits promising potential in biomedical applications due to its biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable properties.

Thienylene combined with pyridylene through planar triazine networks for applications as organic oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts

Covalent triazine networks are interesting candidates for organic electrocatalytic materials due to their tunable, durable and sustainable nature. However, the limited availability of molecular designs that ensure both two-dimensionality and functional groups in the π-conjugated plane has hindered their development. In this work, a layered triazine network composed of thiophene and pyridine ring was synthesized by the novel mild liquid phase condition. The resulting network showed layered nature since its intramolecular interaction stabilized its planar conformation. The connection on the 2-position of the heteroaromatic ring prevents steric hindrance. The simple acid treatment method could be used to exfoliate the networks, resulting in high yields of nanosheets. The planar triazine network showed superior electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction in the structure-defined covalent organic networks.

Heterocyclic Modulated Electronic States of Alkynyl-Containing Conjugated Microporous Polymers for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key process in green energy conversion technology. Heteroatom doping has been proven to be a prospective strategy to prepare metal-free carbon-based electrocatalysts, but such methods often suffer from uncontrollable catalyst frameworks and imprecise active sites. Herein, an organic heterocyclic strategy is adopted to modulate the charge redistribution of alkynyl-containing conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) by introducing varied five-membered heterocyclic structures. Among these CMPs, the S, 2N-containing thiadiazole heterocyclic molecule (CMP-Tdz) with carbonized alginate materials (C_CA ) displays a remarkable quasi-four-electron-transfer ORR pathway, exhibiting an excellent half-wave potential (E_1/2 ) of 0.77 V, coupled with superior methanol tolerance and electrochemical stability, which are among the highest performance in the metal-free organic catalytic material systems. Density functional theory calculations prove that the high catalytic performance of these catalysts originates from the sp-hybridized C atom (site-2) which is activated by their adjacent heterocyclic structures. Importantly, the five-membered heterocyclic structures can also modulate the local charge distribution, and increase dipole moment, with significantly improved catalytic kinetics. This incorporation of chemically designed heterocyclic-containing alkynyl-CMPs provides a new approach to developing efficient metal-free carbon-based electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Designing Thiophene-Enriched Fully Conjugated 3D Covalent Organic Framework as Metal-Free Oxygen Reduction Catalyst for Hydrogen Fuel Cells

The application of three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in renewable energy fields is greatly limited due to their non-conjugated skeletons. Here, we design and successfully synthesize a thiophene-enriched fully conjugated 3D COF (BUCT-COF-11) through an all-thiophene-linked saddle-shaped building block (COThTh-CHO). The BUCT-COF-11 exhibits excellent semiconducting property with intrinsic metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Using the COF as cathode catalyst, the assembled anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) exhibited a high peak power density up to 493 mW cm^-2 . DFT calculations reveal that thiophene introduction in the COF not only improves the conductivity but also optimizes the electronic structure of the sample, which therefore boosts the ORR performance. This is the first report on the application of COFs as metal-free catalysts in fuel cells, demonstrating the great potential of fully conjugated 3D COFs as promising semiconductors in energy fields.

Crystalline-Amorphous Ni3S2-NiMoO4 Heterostructure for Durable Urea Electrolysis-Assisted Hydrogen Production at High Current Density

Developing bifunctional catalysts with good performance at a high current density for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can effectively relieve the severe environmental and energy pressures. Herein, amorphous NiMoO₄ decorated Ni₃S₂ grown on nickel foam (Ni₃S₂-NiMoO₄/NF) is prepared to accelerate UOR and HER. The crystalline-amorphous heterostructure could regulate the interfacial electron structure to reduce the electron density near Ni₃S₂ for optimizing UOR and HER. The decoration of NiMoO₄ enhances its anti-poisoning ability for CO-intermediate species to show good stability at high current densities. Meanwhile, the nano-/microstructure with high hydrophilicity improves mass transfer and the accessibility of electrolyte. Driving high current densities of ±1000 mA cm^-2, it merely needs 1.38 V (UOR) and -263 mV (HER). For urea electrolysis, it can deliver 1000 mA cm^-2 at 1.73 V and stably operate at 500 mA cm^-2 for 120 h. Therefore, this study provides new ideas for durable urea electrolysis-assisted H₂ production.

Plasmon-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Conductive Polymer-Based Nano-Heterojunction for Small Molecule Metabolites Diagnostics

Conductive polymers are promising electrode candidates in the nonenzymatic catalytic detection of small molecule metabolites, due to the tunable electronic conductivity and versatile modifiability. However, the complex catalytic reaction pathway of conductive polymers results in lower detection sensitivity and a narrower linear range compared with clinical metal-based and carbon-based electrodes. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), characterized by deep strong light-matter coupling, has great potential in driving surface catalytic reactions at an ultrafast rate. Here, we constructed a salix argyracea-like polypyrrole nanowires/silver nanoparticles (PPy/AgNPs) heterojunction electrode using polydopamine as a dopant and chelator. Through cyclic voltammetry, the Mott-Schottky curve, and COMSOL simulation, we demonstrated that the LSPR-excited photocarriers enhanced PPy/AgNPs electrode electrocatalysis. Thus, the detection current response and linear range were significantly improved under the LSPR excitation when taking glucose and hydrogen peroxide as models of small molecule metabolites. Furthermore, we discussed the LSPR-enhanced detection mechanism of PPy/AgNPs electrode from the aspects of the Tafel slope, the apparent electron diffusion coefficient, and the charge transfer resistance. This strategy opens a new avenue toward the design of LSPR-enhanced conductive polymer electrodes.

An Initial Covalent Organic Polymer with Closed-F Edges Directly for Proton-Exchange-Membrane Fuel Cells

Covalent organic polymers (COPs) are a class of rising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to the atomically metrical control of the organic molecular components along with highly architectural robustness and thermodynamic stability even in acid or alkaline media. However, the direct application of pristine COPs as acidic ORR electrocatalysts, especially in device manner, e.g., in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), remains a big challenge. Currently, the decoration toward electronic structures of active sites is considered a vital pathway to enhancing the acidic ORR activity of carbon-based electrocatalysts. Here, an initial F-decorated fully closed π-conjugated quasi-phthalocyanine COP (denoted as COP_BTC -F) is reported. The introduction of the closed-F edges stepwise drags more electrons from FeN₄ sites in COP_BTC -F into the catalyst margin, which weakens the occupied numbers of bonding orbitals between COP_BTC -F and OH* intermediates at the rate-determining step, exhibiting over five times intrinsic performance beyond the counterpart without F functionalities (termed as COP_BTC ). Significantly, the maximum power density utilizing COP_BTC -F as a cathode catalyst in PEMFCs is remarkably increased by an order of magnitude compared with COP_BTC , which is a stride forward among catalysts based on a pyrolysis-free conjugated-polymer network in device manner to date.

Oxygen Reduction Activity of B←N-Containing Organic Molecule Affected by Asymmetric Regulation

Organic molecular catalysts have received great attention as they have the merits of well-controlled molecular structures for the development of catalytic chemistry. Herein, the electronic distribution of active sites is regulated by asymmetrically introducing S-heterocycle on one side of the molecular core. As a result, the asymmetric as-PYT and as-BNT show higher oxygen reduction performance than their symmetric counterparts without (s-PY, s-PY2T) or with two S-heterocycle units (s-BN, s-BN2T). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the carbon atoms (site-12) at symmetric s-BN and s-BN2T are the catalytic active sites, while for asymmetric as-BNT, it has changed to amino-N atom (site-14). Due to the non-uniform charge distribution and increased dipole moment of as-BNT caused by asymmetric molecular configuration, the kinetics of catalytic reaction has changed significantly. The catalytically active sites of specific N atoms are further verified experimentally and theoretically by using sterically hindered phenyl groups. This work provides a simple but efficient method to design metal-free oxygen reduction electrocatalysts.

Controlled Asymmetric Charge Distribution of Active Centers in Conjugated Polymers for Oxygen Reduction

Active center reconstruction is essential for high performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts. Usually, the ORR activity stems from the electronic environment of active sites by charge redistribution. We introduce an asymmetry strategy to adjust the charge distribution of active centers by designing conjugated polymer (CP) catalysts with different degrees of asymmetry. We synthesized asymmetric backbone CP (asy-PB) by modifying B←N coordination bonds and asymmetric sidechain CP (asy-PB-A) with different alkyl chain lengths. Both CPs with backbone and sidechain asymmetry exhibit superior ORR performance to their symmetric counterparts (sy-P and sy-PB). The asy-PB with greater asymmetry shows higher catalytic activity than asy-PB-A with relatively smaller asymmetry. DFT calculations reveal that the increased dipole moment and non-uniform charge distribution caused by asymmetric structure endows the center carbon atom of bipyridine with efficient catalytic activity.

Organoboron molecules and polymers for organic solar cell applications

Organic solar cells (OSCs) are emerging as a new photovoltaic technology with the great advantages of low cost, light-weight, flexibility and semi-transparency. They are promising for portable energy-conversion products and building-integrated photovoltaics. Organoboron chemistry offers an important toolbox to design novel organic/polymer optoelectronic materials and to tune their optoelectronic properties for OSC applications. At present, organoboron small molecules and polymers have become an important class of organic photovoltaic materials. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 16% and 14% have been realized with organoboron polymer electron donors and electron acceptors, respectively. In this review, we summarize the research progress in various kinds of organoboron photovoltaic materials for OSC applications, including organoboron small molecular electron donors, organoboron small molecular electron acceptors, organoboron polymer electron donors and organoboron polymer electron acceptors. This review also discusses how to tune their opto-electronic properties and active layer morphology for enhancing OSC device performance. We also offer our insight into the opportunities and challenges in improving the OSC device performance of organoboron photovoltaic materials.

In-situ X-ray techniques for non-noble electrocatalysts

Electrocatalysis offers an alternative solution for the energy crisis because it lowers the activation energy of reaction to produce economic fuels more accessible. Non-noble electrocatalysts have shown their capabilities to practical catalytic applications as compared to noble ones, whose scarcity and high price limit the development. However, the puzzling catalytic processes in non-noble electrocatalysts hinder their advancement. In-situ techniques allow us to unveil the mystery of electrocatalysis and boost the catalytic performances. Recently, various in-situ X-ray techniques have been rapidly developed, so that the whole picture of electrocatalysis becomes clear and explicit. In this review, the in-situ X-ray techniques exploring the structural evolution and chemical-state variation during electrocatalysis are summarized for mainly oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). These approaches include X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The information seized from these in-situ X-ray techniques can effectively decipher the electrocatalysis and thus provide promising strategies for advancing the electrocatalysts. It is expected that this review could be conducive to understanding these in-situ X-ray approaches and, accordingly, the catalytic mechanism to better the electrocatalysis.

BN-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oligomers: Synthesis, Aromaticity, and Reactivity

BN-embedded oligomers with different pairs of BN units were synthesized by electrophilic borylation. Up to four pairs of BN units were incorporated in the large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Their geometric, photophysical, electrochemical, and Lewis acidic properties were investigated by X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The B-N bonds show delocalized double-bond characteristics and the conjugation can be extended through the trans-orientated aromatic azaborine units. Calculations reveal the relatively lower aromaticity for the inner azaborine rings in the BN-embedded PAH oligomers. The frontier orbitals of the longer oligomers are delocalized over the inner aromatic rings. Consequently, the inner moieties of the BN-embedded PAH oligomers are more active than the outer parts. This is confirmed by a simple oxidation reaction, which has significant effects on the aromaticity and the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions.
