Triply Interlocked [2]catenanes: Rational Synthesis, Reversible Conversion Studies and Unprecedented Application in Photothermal Responsive Elastomer

Triply interlocked [2]catenane complexes featuring two identical, mechanically interlocked units are extraordinarily rare chemical compounds, whose properties and applications remain open to detailed studies. Herein, we introduce the rational design of a new ligand precursor, L1, suitable for the synthesis of six triply interlocked [2]catenanes by coordination-driven self-assembly. The interlocked compounds can be reversibly converted into the corresponding simple triangular prism metallacage by addition of H2O or DMF solvents to their CH3OH solutions, thereby demonstrating the importance of π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions in the formation of triply interlocked [2]catenanes. Moreover, extensive studies have been conducted to assess the remarkable photothermal conversion performance. Complex 6 a, exhibiting outstanding photothermal conversion performance (conversion efficiency in solution : 31.82 %), is used to prepare novel photoresponsive elastomer in combination with thermally activated liquid crystal elastomer. The resultant material displays robust response to near-infrared (NIR) laser and the capability of completely reforming the shape and reversible actuation, paving the way for the application of half-sandwich organometallic units in photo-responsive smart materials.

Enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages templated by in situ self-organized D2h-symmetric anions

The control of a molecule's geometry, chirality, and physical properties has long been a challenging pursuit. Our study introduces a dependable method for assembling D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. Specifically, D2h-symmetric anions, like oxalate and chloranilic anions, self-organize around a metal ion to form chiral-at-metal anionic complexes, which template the formation of D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. The chirality of the trigonal bipyramid is determined by the point chirality of chiral amines used in forming the ligands. Additionally, these cages exhibit chiral selectivity for the included chiral-at-metal anionic template. Our method is broadly applicable to various ligand systems, enabling the construction of larger cages when larger D2h-symmetric anions, like chloranilic anions, are employed. Furthermore, we successfully produce enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal cages with anthracene-containing backbones using this approach, which would be otherwise infeasible. These cages exhibit circularly polarized luminescence, which is modulable through the reversible photo-oxygenation of the anthracenes.

Efficient and Selective Construction of 41 2 Metalla-links Using Weak C-H⋅⋅⋅Halogen Interactions

Through a coordination-driven self-assembly method, four4 1 2 ${4_1^2 }$ metalla-links and one tetranuclear monocycle were constructed with high selectivity and yield by adjusting the substituent species of the building blocks, as evidenced using X-ray crystallographic analysis, electrospray ionization-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF/MS), elemental analysis and detailed solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Based on X-ray crystallographic analysis and independent gradient model analysis, a significant factor leading to the formation of4 1 2 ${4_1^2 }$ metalla-links was the introduction of F, Cl, Br and I atoms, which generated additional weak C-H⋅⋅⋅X (X=F, Cl, Br and I) interactions. Furthermore, the dynamic conversion of4 1 2 ${4_1^2 }$ metalla-links to monocyclic rings in methanol solution was systematically investigated using quantitative 1H NMR techniques.

Steric and Geometrical Frustration Generate Two Higher-Order CuI12L8 Assemblies from a Triaminotriptycene Subcomponent

The use of copper(I) in metal-organic assemblies leads readily to the formation of simple grids and helicates, whereas higher-order structures require complex ligand designs. Here, we report the clean and selective syntheses of two complex and structurally distinct CuI12L8 frameworks, 1 and 2, which assemble from the same simple triaminotriptycene subcomponent and a formylpyridine around the CuI templates. Both represent new structure types. In T-symmetric 1, the copper(I) centers describe a pair of octahedra with a common center but whose vertices are offset from each other, whereas in D3-symmetric 2, the metal ions form a distorted hexagonal prism. The syntheses of these architectures illustrate how more intricate CuI-based complexes can be prepared via subcomponent self-assembly than has been possible to date through consideration of the interplay between the subcomponent geometry and solvent and electronic effects.

A Lantern-Shaped Pd(II) Cage Constructed from Four Different Low-Symmetry Ligands with Positional and Orientational Control: An Ancillary Pairings Approach

One of the key challenges of metallo-supramolecular chemistry is to maintain the ease of self-assembly but, at the same time, create structures of increasingly high levels of complexity. In palladium(II) quadruply stranded lantern-shaped cages, this has been achieved through either 1) the formation of heteroleptic (multi-ligand) assemblies, or 2) homoleptic assemblies from low-symmetry ligands. Heteroleptic cages formed from low-symmetry ligands, a hybid of these two approaches, would add an additional rich level of complexity but no examples of these have been reported. Here we use a system of ancillary complementary ligand pairings at the termini of cage ligands to target heteroleptic assemblies: these complementary pairs can only interact (through coordination to a single Pd(II) metal ion) between ligands in a cis position on the cage. Complementarity between each pair (and orthogonality to other pairs) is controlled by denticity (tridentate to monodentate or bidentate to bidentate) and/or hydrogen-bonding capability (AA to DD or AD to DA). This allows positional and orientational control over ligands with different ancillary sites. By using this approach, we have successfully used low-symmetry ligands to synthesise complex heteroleptic cages, including an example with four different low-symmetry ligands.

Controllable Topological Transformations of 818 Molecular Metalla-knots by Oxidation of Thiazole-Based Ligands

By exploiting coordination-driven self-assembly, high yields of two 818 molecular metalla-knots could be obtained using a thiazole-moiety-containing asymmetric dipyridyl ligand 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-5-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzo[d]thiazole (L1 ), as confirmed using X-ray crystallographic analysis, electrospray ionization-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF/MS), and detailed liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. To modulate the self-assembled structures, m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA) was utilized to oxidize thiazole-based ligand L1 to N-thiazole-oxide-based ligand 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-5-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzo[d]thiazole 3-oxide (L2 ), which enabled the selective construction of the corresponding tetranuclear macrocycles. Notably, two molecular metalla-knots could be topologically transformed from 818 knots to simple monocycles because the L1 alkyne bond was inert toward m-CPBA, as confirmed by liquid-state NMR spectroscopy, ESI-TOF/MS, and elemental analysis.

Building Blocks for Molecular Polygons Based on Platinum Vertices and Polyynediyl Edges

Reactions of Cl2P(CH2)3PCl2 and p-MgBrC6H4X (X = a/OMe, b/OtBu, c/tBu, d/SiMe3) give the diphosphines (p-XC6H4)2P(CH2)3P(p-C6H4X)2 (1a-d; 47-66%). Additions of 1a,d to (COD)PtCl2 yield (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)PtCl2 (2a,d; 62-88%), which upon reaction with butadiyne (2 equiv; HNEt2/cat. CuI) give (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2 (3a,d; 34-76%). Alternatively, 3a-d can be accessed from trans-(p-tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2 and 1a-d (30-87%). Reactions of (p-tol3P)2PtCl2 and H(C≡C)2SiR3 (2 equiv, HNEt2/cat. CuI; R = Me/Et/iPr) give trans-(p-tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2SiR3)2 (77-95%), and subsequent additions of 1a,b,d yield the corresponding adducts (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)Pt((C≡C)2SiR3)2 (R/X = Me/OMe, 5a; iPr/OMe, 6a; iPr/OtBu, 6b; iPr/SiMe3, 6d; 52-95%) and (for 5a) a luminescent diplatinum byproduct with trans Pt((C≡C)2SiMe3)2 units. 5a and 6b hydrolyze in the presence of F- to 3a,b (92-93%). Reaction of 2a and 3a (HNEt2/cat. CuI) affords the Pt4C16 polygon ([(CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4OMe)2)2)Pt(C≡C)2]4 as an H2NEt2+ Cl- adduct (66%). The 13C{1H} NMR spectra of 3a-d, 5a, and 6a,b,d feature complex AMXX' (CPtPP') spin systems, and simulations allow J values to be extracted. The crystal structures of 2a, 3a,b,d, 5a, and 6a are determined and analyzed.

Recent Advances in DNA Nanomaterials

Applications of DNA-containing nanomaterials (DNA-NMs) in science and technology are currently attracting increasing attention in the fields of medicine, environment, engineering, etc. Such objects have become important for various branches of science and industries due to their outstanding characteristics such as small size, high controllability, clustering actions, and strong permeability. For these reasons, DNA-NMs deserve a review with respect to their recent advancements. On the other hand, precise cluster control, targeted drug distribution in vivo, and cellular micro-nano operation remain as problems. This review summarizes the recent progress in DNA-NMs and their crossover and integration into multiple disciplines (including in vivo/in vitro, microcircles excisions, and plasmid oligomers). We hope that this review will motivate relevant practitioners to generate new research perspectives and boost the advancement of nanomanipulation.

Piecewise-linear embeddings of decussate extended θ graphs and tetrahedra

An nθ graph is an n-valent graph with two vertices. From symmetry considerations, it has vertex–edge transitivity 1 1. Here, they are considered extended with divalent vertices added to the edges to explore the simplest piecewise-linear tangled embeddings with straight, non-intersecting edges (sticks). The simplest tangles found are those with 3n sticks, transitivity 2 2, and with 2⌊(n − 1)/2⌋ ambient-anisotopic tangles. The simplest finite and 1-, 2- and 3-periodic decussate structures (links and tangles) are described. These include finite cubic and icosahedral and 1- and 3-periodic links, all with minimal transitivity. The paper also presents the simplest tangles of extended tetrahedra and their linkages to form periodic polycatenanes. A vertex- and edge-transitive embedding of a tangled srs net with tangled and polycatenated θ graphs and vertex-transitive tangled diamond (dia) nets are described.

A Switchable Palladium(II) Trefoil Entangled Tetrahedron with Temperature Dependence and Concentration Independence

Self-assembly makes metallo-interlocked architectures attractive targets, but being in equilibrium with smaller species means that they can suffer from dilution effects. We show that a junctioned system gives rise to a [Pd4 (L)2 ]8+ trefoil entangled tetrahedron irrespective of concentration. Heating the sample reversibly shifts the equilibrium from the knot to an isomeric non-interlocked dual metallo-cycle, demonstrating that thermodynamic equilibria can still be exploited for switching even in the absence of concentration effects.

Knotting matters: orderly molecular entanglements

Entangling strands in a well-ordered manner can produce useful effects, from shoelaces and fishing nets to brown paper packages tied up with strings. At the nanoscale, non-crystalline polymer chains of sufficient length and flexibility randomly form tangled mixtures containing open knots of different sizes, shapes and complexity. However, discrete molecular knots of precise topology can also be obtained by controlling the number, sequence and stereochemistry of strand crossings: orderly molecular entanglements. During the last decade, substantial progress in the nascent field of molecular nanotopology has been made, with general synthetic strategies and new knotting motifs introduced, along with insights into the properties and functions of ordered tangle sequences. Conformational restrictions imparted by knotting can induce allostery, strong and selective anion binding, catalytic activity, lead to effective chiral expression across length scales, binding modes in conformations efficacious for drug delivery, and facilitate mechanical function at the molecular level. As complex molecular topologies become increasingly synthetically accessible they have the potential to play a significant role in molecular and materials design strategies. We highlight particular examples of molecular knots to illustrate why these are a few of our favourite things.

Transformation networks of metal-organic cages controlled by chemical stimuli

The flexibility of biomolecules enables them to adapt and transform as a result of signals received from the external environment, expressing different functions in different contexts. In similar fashion, coordination cages can undergo stimuli-triggered transformations owing to the dynamic nature of the metal-ligand bonds that hold them together. Different types of stimuli can trigger dynamic reconfiguration of these metal-organic assemblies, to switch on or off desired functionalities. Such adaptable systems are of interest for applications in switchable catalysis, selective molecular recognition or as transformable materials. This review highlights recent advances in the transformation of cages using chemical stimuli, providing a catalogue of reported strategies to transform cages and thus allow the creation of new architectures. Firstly we focus on strategies for transformation through the introduction of new cage components, which trigger reconstitution of the initial set of components. Secondly we summarize conversions triggered by external stimuli such as guests, concentration, solvent or pH, highlighting the adaptation processes that coordination cages can undergo. Finally, systems capable of responding to multiple stimuli are described. Such systems constitute composite chemical networks with the potential for more complex behaviour. We aim to offer new perspectives on how to design transformation networks, in order to shed light on signal-driven transformation processes that lead to the preparation of new functional metal-organic architectures.

Self-Assembly of Molecular Trefoil Knots Featuring Pentadecanuclear Homoleptic AuI -, AuI /AgI -, or AuI /CuI -Alkynyl Coordination

Metal-free and metal-containing molecular trefoil knots are fascinating ensembles that are usually covalently assembled, the latter requiring the rational design of di- or multidentate/multipodal ligands as connectors. In this work, we describe the self-assembly of pentadecanuclear Au^I trefoil knots [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] from monoalkynes HC≡CR (R=9,9-X₂ -fluorenyl with X=nBu, n-hexyl) and [Au^I (THT)Cl]. Hetero-bimetallic counterparts [Au₉ M₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] (M=Cu/Ag) were self-assembled by reactions of [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] with [Cu(MeCN)₄ ]⁺ /AgNO₃ and HC≡CR. The type of pentadecanuclear trefoil knots described herein is characterized by X-ray crystallography, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. [Au₉ Cu₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] is relatively stable in hexane; its excited state properties were investigated. DFT calculations revealed that non-covalent metal-metal and metal-ligand interactions, together with longer alkyl chain-strengthened inter-ligand dispersion interactions, govern the stability of the trefoil knot structures.

Recent trends in organic cage synthesis: push towards water-soluble organic cages

Research on organic cages has blossomed over the past few years into a mature field of study which can contribute to solving some of the challenging problems. In this review we aim to showcase the recent trends in synthesis of organic cages including a brief discussion on their use in catalysis, gas sorption, host-guest chemistry and energy transfer. Among the organic cages, water-soluble analogues are a special class of compounds which have gained renewed attention in recent times. Due to their advantage of being compatible with water, such cages have the potential of showing biomimetic activities and can find use in drug delivery and also as hosts for catalysis in aqueous medium. Hence, the synthetic strategies for the formation of water-soluble organic cages shall be discussed along with their potential applications.

Structural and anionic effects of microcrystalline Zn-CPs on 4-nitrophenol sensing performances

Coordination polymers (CPs: [ZnL₃]_n(X)_2n, L = trans-1,4-bis(imidazolyl)-2-butene; X⁻ = BF₄⁻, ClO₄⁻, NO₃⁻) allow for detection of the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) oxidation process by enhanced electrochemical signals. Electrochemical measurement is a highly sensitive method providing much evidence of chemical reactions on an electrode surface. In the present study, we designed and synthesized, with reference to X-ray diffraction data and by spectroscopic analyses, new 3D coordination structures containing imidazolyl donors and zinc(ii). The presence of microcrystals [ZnL₃]_n(BF₄)_2n on the working electrode enhanced the redox signals. Therefore, we propose a simple catalytic process that can explain these results and clarify the influence of anions that constitute CP materials used to improve electrochemical detection applications. The CP materials were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric (TG) analyses, single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), and electrochemical analyses.

To investigate structural and anionic effects of coordination polymers (CPs) on electrochemical sensors, Zn-CPs were synthesized and used for 4-nitrophenol oxidation sensors.

Amplification of weak chiral inductions for excellent control over the helical orientation of discrete topologically chiral (M3L2) n polyhedra

Superb control over the helical chirality of discrete (M₃L₂)_n polyhedra (n = 2,4,8, M = Cu^I or Ag^I) created from the self-assembly of propeller-shaped ligands (L) equipped with chiral side chains is demonstrated here. Almost perfect chiral induction (>99 : 1) of the helical orientation of the framework was achieved for the largest (M₃L₂)₈ cube with 48 small chiral side chains (diameter: ∼5 nm), while no or moderate chiral induction was observed for smaller polyhedra (n = 2, 4). Thus, amplification of the weak chiral inductions of each ligand unit is an efficient way to control the chirality of large discrete nanostructures with high structural complexity.

Superb control over the helical chirality of highly-entangled (M₃L₂)_n polyhedra (M = Cu(i), Ag(i); n = 2,4,8) was achieved via multiplication of weak chiral inductions by side chains accumulated on the huge polyhedral surfaces.

Metallosupramolecular cages: from design principles and characterisation techniques to applications

Although metallosupramolecular cages are self-assembled from seemingly simple building blocks, metal ions and organic ligands, architectures of increasingly large size and complexity are accessible and exploited in applications from catalysis to the stabilisation of reactive species. This Tutorial Review gives an introduction to the principles for designing metallosupramolecular cages and highlights advances in the design of large and lower symmetry cages. The characterisation and identification of cages relies on a number of complementary techniques with NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and computational methods being the focus of this review. Finally, examples of cages are discussed where these design principles and characterisation techniques are put into practice for an application or function of the cage.

Tangled piecewise-linear embeddings of trivalent graphs

A method is described for generating and exploring tangled piecewise-linear embeddings of trivalent graphs under the constraints of point-group symmetry. It is shown that the possible vertex-transitive tangles are either graphs of vertex-transitive polyhedra or bipartite vertex-transitive nonplanar graphs. One tangle is found for 6 vertices, three for 8 vertices (tangled cubes), seven for 10 vertices, and 21 for 12 vertices. Also described are four isogonal embeddings of pairs of cubes and 12 triplets of tangled cubes (16 and 24 vertices, respectively). Vertex 2-transitive embeddings are obtained for tangled trivalent graphs with 6 vertices (two found) and 8 vertices (45 found). Symmetrical tangles of the 10-vertex Petersen graph and the 20-vertex Desargues graph are also described. Extensions to periodic tangles are indicated. These are all interesting and viable targets for molecular synthesis.

Symmetric tangled Platonic polyhedra

Tangled tetrahedra, octahedra, cubes, icosahedra, and dodecahedra are generalizations of classical—untangled—Platonic polyhedra. Like the Platonic polyhedra, all vertices, edges, and faces are symmetrically equivalent. However, the edges of tangled polyhedra are curvilinear, or kinked, to allow entanglement, much like warps and wefts in woven fabrics. We construct the most symmetric entanglements of these polyhedra via assemblies of multistrand helices wound around edges of the conventional polyhedra; they are all necessarily chiral. The construction gives self-entangled chiral polyhedra and compound polyhedra containing catenated multiple tetrahedra or “generalized θ-polyhedra.” An unlimited variety of tangling is possible for any given topology. Related structures have been observed in synthetic materials and clathrin assemblies within cells.

Conventional embeddings of the edge-graphs of Platonic polyhedra, {f, z}, where f, z denote the number of edges in each face and the edge-valence at each vertex, respectively, are untangled in that they can be placed on a sphere (S2) such that distinct edges do not intersect, analogous to unknotted loops, which allow crossing-free drawings of S1 on the sphere. The most symmetric (flag-transitive) realizations of those polyhedral graphs are those of the classical Platonic polyhedra, whose symmetries are *2fz, according to Conway’s two-dimensional (2D) orbifold notation (equivalent to Schönflies symbols I_h, O_h, and T_d). Tangled Platonic {f, z} polyhedra—which cannot lie on the sphere without edge-crossings—are constructed as windings of helices with three, five, seven,… strands on multigenus surfaces formed by tubifying the edges of conventional Platonic polyhedra, have (chiral) symmetries 2fz (I, O, and T), whose vertices, edges, and faces are symmetrically identical, realized with two flags. The analysis extends to the “θ_z” polyhedra, {2,z}. The vertices of these symmetric tangled polyhedra overlap with those of the Platonic polyhedra; however, their helicity requires curvilinear (or kinked) edges in all but one case. We show that these 2fz polyhedral tangles are maximally symmetric; more symmetric embeddings are necessarily untangled. On one hand, their topologies are very constrained: They are either self-entangled graphs (analogous to knots) or mutually catenated entangled compound polyhedra (analogous to links). On the other hand, an endless variety of entanglements can be realized for each topology. Simpler examples resemble patterns observed in synthetic organometallic materials and clathrin coats in vivo.

Mechanochemical synthesis of mechanical bonds in M12L8 poly-[n]-catenanes

Using mechanochemistry by grinding TPB and ZnBr₂, an amorphous poly-[n]-catenane of interlocked M12L8 nanocages is obtained in good yields (∼80%) and within 15 minutes. The mechanical bond among the icosahedral M12L8 cages in the amorphous phase has been demonstrated by single crystal XRD, powder XRD and FT-IR spectroscopy following an amorphous-to-crystalline transformation by guest uptake of the amorphous phase. High-resolution solid-state ¹³C NMR spectroscopy gives insights into the local structure of the amorphous catenane focusing on TPB aromatic-aromatic interactions.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Encapsulation Properties of Rigid and Flexible Porphyrin Cages Assembled from N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Metal Bonds

Four porphyrins equipped with imidazolium rings on the para positions of their meso aryl groups were prepared and used as tetrakis(N-heterocyclic carbene) (NHC) precursors for the synthesis of porphyrin cages assembled from eight NHC-M bonds (M = Ag⁺ or Au⁺). The conformation of the obtained porphyrin cages in solution and their encapsulation properties strongly depend on the structure of the spacer -(CH₂)_n- (n = 0 or 1) between meso aryl groups and peripheral NHC ligands. In the absence of methylene groups (n = 0), porphyrin cages are rather rigid and the short porphyrin-porphyrin distance prevents the encapsulation of guest molecules like 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). By contrast, the presence of methylene functions (n = 1) between meso aryl groups and peripheral NHCs offers additional flexibility to the system, allowing the inner space between the two porphyrins to expand enough to encapsulate guest molecules like water molecules or DABCO. The peripheral NHC-wingtip groups also play a significant role in the encapsulation properties of the porphyrin cages.

A Hydrogen-Bonded Ravel Assembled by Anion Coordination

Anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is showing increasing power in the construction of anionic supramolecular architectures. Herein, by expanding the anion centers from oxoanion (phosphate or sulfate) to organic tris-carboxylates, an Archimedean solid (truncated tetrahedron) and a highly entangled, double-walled tetrahedron featuring a ravel topology have been assembled with tris-bis(urea) ligands. The results demonstrate the promising ability of tris-carboxylates as new anion coordination centers in constructing novel topologies with increasing complexity and diversity compared to phosphate or sulfate ions on account of the modifiable size and easy functionalization character of these organic anions.

Self-Assembled Manganese(I)-Based Selenolato-Bridged Tetranuclear Metallorectangles: Host-Guest Interaction, Anticancer, and CO-Releasing Studies

Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)₃Mn(μ-SeR)₂Mn(CO)₃}₂(μ-L)₂] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

Nanoarchitectonics: what's coming next after nanotechnology?

In science and technology today, the crucial importance of the regulation of nanoscale objects and structures is well recognized. The production of functional material systems using nanoscale units can be achieved via the fusion of nanotechnology with the other research disciplines. This task is a part of the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics, which is a concept moving beyond the area of nanotechnology. The concept of nanoarchitectonics is supposed to involve the architecting of functional materials using nanoscale units based on the principles of nanotechnology. In this focus article, the essences of nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics are first explained, together with their historical backgrounds. Then, several examples of material production based on the concept of nanoarchitectonics are introduced via several approaches: (i) from atomic switches to neuromorphic networks; (ii) from atomic nanostructure control to environmental and energy applications; (iii) from interfacial processes to devices; and (iv) from biomolecular assemblies to life science. Finally, perspectives relating to the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach are discussed.

Photoswitchable Fluorescent Self-Assembled Metallacycles with High Photostability

In this study, photoswitchable fluorescent supramolecular metallacycles with high fatigue-resistance have been constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly by using bithienylethene with dipyridyl units (BTE) as a coordination donor and a fluorescent di-platinum(II) (Pt-F) as a coordination acceptor. The photo-triggered reversible transformation between the ring-open and ring-closed form of the metallacycles was confirmed by ¹ H NMR, ³¹ P NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. This unique property enabled a reversible noninvasive "off-on" switching of fluorescence through efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Importantly, the metallacycles remained structurally intact after up to 10 photoswitching cycles. The photoresponsive property and exceptional photostability of the metallacycles posit their potential promising application in optical switching, image storage, and super-resolution microscopy.

Multidentate, V-Shaped Pyridine Building Blocks as Tectons for Crystal Engineering

The formation of supramolecular structural units through self-assembly is a powerful method to design new architectures and materials endowed with specific properties. With the aim of adding a group of versatile tectons to the toolkit of crystal engineers, we have devised and synthesised four new V-shaped building blocks characterised by an aryl acetylene scaffold comprising three substituted pyridine rings connected by two triple bonds. The judicious choice of different substituents on the pyridine rings provides these tectons with distinctive steric, electrostatic and self-assembly properties, which influence their crystal structures and their ability to form co-crystals. Co-crystals of the tectons with tetraiododifluorobenzene were obtained both via traditional and mechanochemical crystallisation strategies, proving their potential use in crystal engineering. The energetic contributions of the supramolecular interactions at play in the crystal lattice have also been evaluated to better understand their nature and strength and to rationalise their role in designing molecular crystals.

New Bis-Pyrazole-Bis-Acetate Based Coordination Complexes: Influence of Counter-Anions and Metal Ions on the Supramolecular Structures

A new flexible bis-pyrazol-bis-acetate ligand, diethyl 2,2’-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis (5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl))diacetate (L), has been synthesised, and three coordination complexes, namely, [Zn(L)2](BF4)2 (1), [MnLCl2] (2) and [CdLCl2] (3) have been obtained. All ligands and complexes were characterised by IR, mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiment revealed that the primary supramolecular building block of 1 is a hexagonal chair shaped 0D hydrogen bonded synthon (stabilised by C–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonding and C=O∙∙∙π interactions), which further built into a 2D corrugated sheet-like architecture having a 3-c net honeycomb topology, and finally extended to a 3D hydrogen bonded network structure having a five nodal 1,3,3,3,7-c net, through C–H∙∙∙F interactions. On the other hand, the two crystallographically independent molecules of 2 exhibited two distinct supramolecular structures such as 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure and 1D zigzag hydrogen bonded chain, sustained by C–H∙O and C–H∙∙∙Cl interactions, which are further self-assembled into a 3,4-c network structure, and 3 showed a 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure. The supramolecular structural diversity in these complexes is due to the different conformations adopted by the ligands, which are mainly induced by different metal ions with coordination environments controlled by different anions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was explored for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the supramolecular interactions.

"Eggs in egg cartons": co-crystallization to embed molecular cages into crystalline lattices

Discrete (M3L2) n cages assembled from a tripodal ligand (L) and metal ions (M: Cu(i) or Ag(i)) are embedded in networked coordination hosts formed by partial dissociation of the same discrete cages during the crystallization process. The resulting "eggs-in-an-egg-carton" structures provide unique examples of the co-crystallization of discrete and infinite coordination frameworks.

Coordination-Assembled Water-Soluble Anionic Lanthanide Organic Polyhedra for Luminescent Labeling and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Lanthanide-containing functional complexes have found a variety of applications in materials science and biomedicine because of their unique electroptical and magnetic properties. However, the poor stability and solubility in water of multicomponent lanthanide organic assemblies significantly limit their practical applications. We report here a series of water-stable anionic Ln_2nL_3n-type (n = 2, 3, 4, and 5) lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) constructed by deprotonation self-assembly of three fully conjugated ligands (H₄L¹ and H₄L^2a/b) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety. The outcomes of the LOPs formation reactions were found to be very sensitive toward the reaction conditions including base, metal source, solvents, and concentrations as characterized by a combination of NMR, high-resolution ESI-MS and X-ray crystallography. Ligands H₄L^2a/b manifested an excellent sensitization toward lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu^III and Tb^III), with high luminescent quantum yields for Tb₈L^2a₁₂ (Φ = 11.2% in water) and Eu₈L^2b₁₂ (Φ = 76.8% in DMSO) measured in polar solvents. Furthermore, due to the giant molecular weight and rigidity of the polyhedral skeleton, Gd₈L^2b₁₂ showed a very high longitudinal relaxivity (r₁) of 400.53 mM^-1S^-1. The performance of Gd₈L^2b₁₂ as potential magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents (CAs) in vivo was evaluated with much longer retention time in the tumor sites compared with the commercial Gd^III-based CAs. Dual-modal imaging potential has also been demonstrated with the mixed Eu/Gd LOPs. Our results not only provide a new design route toward water-stable multinuclear lanthanide organic assemblies but also offer potential candidates of supramolecular-edifices for bioimaging and drug delivery.

Isogonal weavings on the sphere: knots, links, polycatenanes

Mathematical knots and links are described as piecewise linear - straight, non-intersecting sticks meeting at corners. Isogonal structures have all corners related by symmetry (`vertex'-transitive). Corner- and stick-transitive structures are termed regular. No regular knots are found. Regular links are cubic or icosahedral and a complete account of these (36 in number) is given, including optimal (thickest-stick) embeddings. Stick 2-transitive isogonal structures are again cubic and icosahedral and also encompass the infinite family of torus knots and links. The major types of these structures are identified and reported with optimal embeddings. The relevance of this work to materials chemistry and biochemistry is noted.

Coordination-Directed Construction of Molecular Links

Since the emergence of the concept of chemical topology, interlocked molecular assemblies have graduated from academic curiosities and poorly defined species to become synthetic realities. Coordination-directed synthesis provides powerful, diverse, and increasingly sophisticated protocols for accessing interlocked molecules. Originally, metal ions were employed solely as templates to gather and position building blocks in entwined or threaded arrangements. Recently, metal centers have increasingly featured within the backbones of the integral structural elements, which in turn use noncovalent interactions to self-assemble into intricate topologies. By outlining ingenious recent examples as well as seminal classic cases, this Review focuses on the role of metal-ligand paradigms in assembling molecular links. In addition, the ever-evolving approaches to efficient assembly, the structural features of the resulting architectures, and their prospects for the future are also presented.
