Direct Optical Patterning of Metal-Organic Frameworks via Photoacid-Induced Etching

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks. Coordinative competition labilizes some MOFs under harsh chemical conditions because of their weak bonding. However, instability is not always a negative property of a material. In this study, we demonstrated the use of the acidic lability of MOFs for direct optical patterning. The controllable acid release from the photoacid generator at the exposed area causes bond cleavage between the linkers and metal ions/clusters, leading to solubility changes and pattern formation after development. This process avoids redundant steps and possible contamination in traditional photolithography, while maintaining the original properties of patterned MOFs. The preserved porosity and crystallinity promoted the development of MOFs for gas sensors and solid displays.

Meta-Structured Covalent Organic Framework Nanocoatings with Active and Angle-Independent Structural Coloration

High-performance multifunctional nanocoatings not only protect and enhance substrate materials but also offer additional functionalities. This demands a sophisticated coordination of the coating's inherent properties and microstructural features. Here, a multifunctional active nanocoating via meta-structural engineering of covalent organic framework (COF) deposition materials is presented. This COF nanocoating, characterized by well-defined micropores (1-2 nm), meta-structured textures (30-300 nm), tailored thickness (100-300 nm), and good uniformness, showcases a unique combination of angle-independent structural coloration and ultrafast responsiveness to gaseous stimuli. Remarkably, it demonstrates good compatibility with a wide range of inert substrate materials, from rigid ones like glass and metal to flexible elastomers and nanomaterial films of various shapes and sizes. This versatility enables the facile development of devices that can optically report information about their environments. Examples include chemically active coatings with ultrafast (≈10 ms) color-changing behaviors and programmable actuation behaviors upon exposure to gaseous stimuli, and mechanically active coatings that can detect substrate strain up to 50% yet maintain structural robustness and consistent coloration hue. It is believed that meta-structural engineering of COF nanocoatings on inert substrates can enable them to respond to environmental stimuli, potentially indicating a new trend in developing multifunctional materials and smart devices.

Crosslinking-induced patterning of MOFs by direct photo- and electron-beam lithography

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse chemistry, structures, and properties have emerged as appealing materials for miniaturized solid-state devices. The incorporation of MOF films in these devices, such as the integrated microelectronics and nanophotonics, requires robust patterning methods. However, existing MOF patterning methods suffer from some combinations of limited material adaptability, compromised patterning resolution and scalability, and degraded properties. Here we report a universal, crosslinking-induced patterning approach for various MOFs, termed as CLIP-MOF. Via resist-free, direct photo- and electron-beam (e-beam) lithography, the ligand crosslinking chemistry leads to drastically reduced solubility of colloidal MOFs, permitting selective removal of unexposed MOF films with developer solvents. This enables scalable, micro-/nanoscale (≈70 nm resolution), and multimaterial patterning of MOFs on large-area, rigid or flexible substrates. Patterned MOF films preserve their crystallinity, porosity, and other properties tailored for targeted applications, such as diffractive gas sensors and electrochromic pixels. The combined features of CLIP-MOF create more possibilities in the system-level integration of MOFs in various electronic, photonic, and biomedical devices.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Opportunities for Rational Materials Design in Cancer Therapy

Nanomedicines are extensively used in cancer therapy. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline organic porous materials with several benefits for cancer therapy, including porosity, design flexibility, functionalizability, and biocompatibility. This review examines the use of COFs in cancer therapy from the perspective of reticular chemistry and function-oriented materials design. First, the modification sites and functionalization methods of COFs are discussed, followed by their potential as multifunctional nanoplatforms for tumor targeting, imaging, and therapy by integrating functional components. Finally, some challenges in the clinical translation of COFs are presented with the hope of promoting the development of COF-based anticancer nanomedicines and bringing COFs closer to clinical trials.

Starfruit-Shaped Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks: From 3D Intermediates to 2D Nanosheet Petals with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

We present the fabrication of a novel Starfruit-shaped metal-organic framework (SMOF) composed of zirconium and Tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine linkers. The SMOF exhibits a unique morphology with edge-sharing two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet petals. Our investigation unravels a captivating transformation process, wherein three-dimensional (3D) shuttle-shaped MOFs form initially and subsequently evolve into 2D nanosheet-based SMOF structures. The distinct morphology of SMOF showcases superior catalytic activity in detoxifying G-type nerve agent and blister agent simulants, surpassing that of its 3D counterparts. This discovery of the 3D-to-2D transition growth pathway unlocks exciting opportunities for exploring novel strategies in advanced MOF nanostructure development, not only for catalysis but also for various other applications.

MOF-based nanocomposites as transduction matrices for optical and electrochemical sensing

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline microporous materials have been into research limelight lately due to their commendable physio-chemical properties and easy fabrication methods. They have enormous surface area which can be a working ground for innumerable molecule adhesions and site for potential sensor matrices. Their biocompatibility makes them valuable for in vitro detection systems but a compromised conductivity requires a lot of surface engineering of these molecules for their usage in electrochemical biosensors. However, they are not just restricted to a single type of transduction system rather can also be modified to achieve feat as optical (colorimetry, luminescence) and electro-luminescent biosensors. This review emphasizes on recent advancements in the area of MOF-based biosensors with focus on various MOF synthesis methods and their general properties along with selective attention to electrochemical, optical and opto-electrochemical hybrid biosensors. It also summarizes MOF-based biosensors for monitoring free radicals, metal ions, small molecules, macromolecules and cells in a wide range of real matrices. Extensive tables have been included for understanding recent trends in the field of MOF-composite probe fabrication. The article sums up the future scope of these materials in the field of biosensors and enlightens the reader with recent trends for future research scope.

Highly Ordered Hierarchical Macro-Mesoporous Carbon-Supported Cobalt Electrocatalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have been extensively employed in Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) catalysts due to their significantly larger specific surface areas, distinct metal centers, and well-organized porous structures. However, the microporous structure of MOFs and their derivatives presents mass transfer resistance, limiting their further development. Drawing inspiration from hierarchical structures allowing for the transport and exchange of substances in the biological world, we designed and fabricated biomimetic layered porous structures within ZIF-67 and its derivatives. Based on this, we achieved a three-dimensional ordered layered porous nitrogen-doped carbon-coated magnetic cobalt catalyst (3DOLP Co@NDC) with a biomimetic pore structure. It is found that the 3DOLP Co@NDC (352 mV @10 mA cm-1 ) was better than Co@NDC (391 mV @10 mA cm-1 ). The introduction of a three-dimensional ordered layered porous structure is conducive to increasing the specific surface area of the material, increasing the electrochemical active area, and improving the catalytic performance of the material. The introduction of a three-dimensional ordered layered porous structure would help to build a bionic grade pore structure. The existence of biomimetic grade pore structure can effectively reduce the mass transfer resistance, improve the material exchange efficiency, and accelerate the reaction kinetics.

In-Plane Palladium and Interplanar Copper Dual Single-Atom Catalyst in Bulk-Like Carbon Nitride for Cascade CO2 Photoreduction

Dual single-atom catalysts (DSACs) are promising for breaking the scaling relationships and ensuring synergistic effects compared with conventional single-atom catalysts (SACs). Nevertheless, precise synthesis and optimization of DSACs with specific locations and functions remain challenging. Herein, dual single-atoms are specifically incorporated into the layer-stacked bulk-like carbon nitride, featuring in-plane three-coordinated Pd and interplanar four-coordinated Cu (Pd1 -Cu1 /b-CN) atomic sites, from both experimental results and DFT simulations. Using femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, it is found that the in-plane Pd features a charge decay lifetime of 95.6 ps which is much longer than that of the interplanar Cu (3.07 ps). This finding indicates that the in-plane Pd can provide electrons for the reaction as the catalytically active site in both structurally and dynamically favorable manners. Such a well-defined bi-functional cascade system ensures a 3.47-fold increase in CO yield compared to that of bulk-like CN (b-CN), while also exceeding the effects of single Pd1 /b-CN and Cu1 /b-CN sites. Furthermore, DFT calculations reveal that the inherent transformation from s-p coupling to d-p hybridization between the Pd site and CO2 molecule occurs during the initial CO2 adsorption and hydrogenation processes and stimulates the preferred CO2 -to-CO reaction pathway.

Facet-controlled assembly for organizing metal-organic framework particles into extended structures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials characterized by their high porosity and chemical tailorability. To realize the full potential of synthesized MOFs, it is important to transform them from crystalline solid powders into materials with integrated morphologies and properties. One promising approach is facet-controlled assembly, which involves arranging individual crystalline MOF particles into ordered macroscale structures by carefully controlling the interactions between particles. The resulting assembled MOF structures maintain the characteristics of individual particles while also exhibiting improved properties overall. In this article, we emphasize the essential concepts of MOF assembly, highlighting the impact of building blocks, surface interactions, and Gibbs free energy on the assembly process. We systematically examine three methods of guiding facet-controlled MOF assembly, including spontaneous assembly, assembly guided by external forces, and assembly through surface modifications. Lastly, we offer outlooks on future advancements in the fabrication of MOF-based material and potential application exploration.

Recent Advances in Multifunctional Reticular Framework Nanoparticles: A Paradigm Shift in Materials Science Road to a Structured Future

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) have become a highly sought-after research domain that offers a promising avenue for developing cutting-edge nanostructured materials, both in their pristine state and when subjected to various chemical and structural modifications. Metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks are examples of these emerging materials that have gained significant attention due to their unique properties, such as high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, unique structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research on base-stable POFs, emphasizing the distinct pros and cons of reticular framework nanoparticles compared to other types of nanocluster materials. Thereafter, the review highlights the unique opportunity to produce multifunctional tailoring nanoparticles to meet specific application requirements. It is recommended that this potential for creating customized nanoparticles should be the driving force behind future synthesis efforts to tap the full potential of this multifaceted material category.

Alignment of Breathing Metal-Organic Framework Particles for Enhanced Water-Driven Actuation

As the majority of known metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess anisotropic crystal lattices and thus anisotropic physicochemical properties, a pressing practical challenge in MOF research is the establishment of robust and simple processing methods to fully harness the anisotropic properties of the MOFs in various applications. We address this challenge by applying an E-field to precisely align MIL-88A microcrystals and generate MIL-88A@polymer films. Thereafter, we demonstrate the impact of MOF crystal alignment on the actuation properties of the films as a proof of concept. We investigate how different anisotropies of the MIL-88A@polymer films, specifically, crystal anisotropy, particle alignment, and film composition, can lead to the synergetic enhancement of the film actuation upon water exposure. Moreover, we explore how the directionality in application of the external stimuli (dry/humid air stream, water/air interface) affects the direction and the extent of the MIL-88A@polymer film movement. Apart from the superior water-driven actuation properties of the developed films, we demonstrate by dynamometer measurements the higher degree of mechanical work performed by the aligned MIL-88A@polymer films with the preserved anisotropies compared to the unaligned films. The insights provided by this work into anisotropic properties displayed by aligned MIL-88A@polymer films promise to translate crystal performance benefits measured in laboratories into real-world applications. We anticipate that our work is a starting point to utilize the full potential of anisotropic properties of MOFs.

Combinatorial Synthesis of Covalent Organic Framework Particles with Hierarchical Pores and Their Catalytic Application

Precise tailoring of the aggregation state of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to form a hierarchical porous structure is critical to their performance and applications. Here, we report a one-pot and one-step strategy of using dynamic combinatorial chemistry to construct imine-based hollow COFs containing meso- and macropores. It relies on a direct copolymerization of three or more monomers in the presence of two monofunctional competitors. The resulting particle products possess high crystallinity and hierarchical pores, including micropores around 0.93 nm, mesopores widely distributed in the range of 3.1-32 nm, and macropores at about 500 nm, while the specific surface area could be up to 748 m2·g-1, with non-micropores accounting for 60% of the specific surface area. The particles demonstrate unique advantages in the application as nanocarriers for in situ loading of Pd catalysts at 93.8% loading efficiency in the copolymerization of ethylene and carbon monoxide. The growth and assembly of the copolymer could thus be regulated to form flower-shaped particles, efficiently suppressing the fouling of the reactor. The copolymer's weight-average molecular weight and the melting temperature are also highly improved. Our method provides a facile way of fabricating COFs with hierarchical pores for advanced applications in catalysis.

Fast Dynamic Synthesis of MIL-68(In) Thin Films in High Optical Quality for Optical Cavity Sensing

Fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films rigidly anchored on suitable substrates is a crucial prerequisite for the integration of these porous hybrid materials into electronic and optical devices. Thus, far, the structural variety for MOF thin films available through layer-by-layer deposition was limited, as the preparation of those surface-anchored metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs) has several requirements: mild conditions, low temperatures, day-long reaction times, and nonaggressive solvents. We herein present a fast method for the preparation of the MIL SURMOF on Au-surfaces under rather harsh conditions: Using a dynamic layer-by-layer synthesis for MIL-68(In), thin films of adjustable thickness between 50 and 2000 nm could be deposited within only 60 min. The MIL-68(In) thin film growth was monitored in situ using a quartz crystal microbalance. In-plane X-ray diffraction revealed oriented MIL-68(In) growth with the pore-channels of this interesting MOF aligned parallel to the support. Scanning electron microscopy data demonstrated an extraordinarily low roughness of the MIL-68(In) thin films. Mechanical properties and lateral homogeneity of the layer were probed through nanoindentation. These thin films showed extremely high optical quality. By applying a poly(methyl methacrylate) layer and further depositing an Au-mirror to the top, a MOF optical cavity was fabricated that can be used as a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The MIL-68(In)-based cavity showed a series of sharp resonances in the ultraviolet-visible regime. Changes in the refractive index of MIL-68(In) caused by exposure to volatile compounds led to pronounced position shifts of the resonances. Thus, these cavities are well suited to be used as optical read-out sensors.

Beyond Microporosity in Porous Organic Molecular Materials (POMMs)

Porous organic molecular materials (POMMs) are a novel class of porous materials that cover a wide range of organic-based molecular building blocks connected through weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking, van der Waals and electrostatic interactions. Despite of their diverse chemical and structural nature, common features to POMMs include solution processability, crystallinity and microporosity. Herein, we focus, for the first time, on the advance of the field of POMMs beyond the archetypical microporosity. In particular, we highlight relevant examples of meso- and macroporous POMMs, as well as hierchachical ones (micro-/meso-, micro-/macro- and meso-/macroporous). We also remark some of their unique properties, and how they can be key in many applications.

Construction of Covalent Organic Framework Nanofiber Membranes for Efficient Adsorption of Antibiotics

Techniques beyond crystal engineering are critical for manufacturing covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and to explore them for advanced applications. However, COFs are normally obtained as insoluble, unmeltable, and thus nonprocessible microcrystalline powders. Therefore, it is a significant challenge to implement COFs into larger architectures and structural control on different length scales. Herein, a facile strategy is presented to prepare flexible COF nanofiber membranes by in-situ growth of COFs on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber substrates via a reversible polycondensation-termination approach. The obtained PAN@COF nanofiber membranes with vertically aligned COF nanoplates combine a large functional surface with efficient mass transport, thus making it a promising adsorbent, for example, for water purification. The antibiotic pollutant ofloxacin (OFX) is removed from water with a superior absorption capacity of ≈236 mg g^-1 and removal efficiency as high as 98%. The here presented in-situ growth of COFs on nanofiber membranes can be extended to various Schiff base-derived COF materials with different compositions, providing a highly efficient way to construct flexible COF-based membranes for several applications.

Maneuvering Applications of Covalent Organic Frameworks via Framework-Morphology Modulation

Translating the performance of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from laboratory to macroscopic reality demands specific morphologies. Thus, the advancement in morphological modulation has recently gained some momentum. A clear understanding of nano- to macroscopic architecture is critical to determine, optimize, and improve performances of this atomically precise porous material. Along with their chemical compositions and molecular frameworks, the prospect of morphology in various applications should be discussed and highlighted. A thorough insight into morphology versus application will help produce better-engineered COFs for practical implications. 2D and 3D frameworks can be transformed into various solids such as nanospheres, thin films, membranes, monoliths, foams, etc., for numerous applications in adsorption, separation photocatalysis, the carbon dioxide reduction, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. However, the research on COF chemistry mainly focuses on correlating structure to property, structure to morphology, and structure to applications. Here, critical insights on various morphological evolution and associated applications are provided. In each case, the underlying role of morphology is unveiled. Toward the end, a correlation between morphology and application is provided for the future development of COFs.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a highly mobile cancerogenic and teratogenic heavy metal ion. Among the varied technologies applied today to address chromium water pollution, photocatalysis offers a rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III). In contrast to classic photocatalysts, Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous semiconductors that can couple the Cr(VI) to Cr(III) photoreduction to the chromium species immobilization. In this minireview, we wish to discuss and analyze the state-of-the-art of MOFs for Cr(VI) detoxification and contextualizing it to the most recent advances and strategies of MOFs for photocatalysis purposes. The minireview has been structured in three sections: (i) a detailed discussion of the specific experimental techniques employed to characterize MOF photocatalysts, (ii) a description and identification of the key characteristics of MOFs for Cr(VI) photoreduction, and (iii) an outlook and perspective section in order to identify future trends.

A covalent organic framework/graphene aerogel electrocatalyst for enhanced overall water splitting

The rational design of covalent organic framework (COF) based hybrid materials is of paramount importance to address the fundamental challenges of COFs with respect to their poor electron mobilization and the limited number of accessible active sites. Herein, we propose a new strategy for the fabrication of covalently bonded COF grafted graphene aerogel hybrid materials for electrocatalytic application. An in situ step-growth polymerization approach was developed to achieve the hybridization of COFs along the surface of amino-functionalized graphene nanosheets. By taking advantage of the three-dimensional conductive networks and highly accessible active sites, the cobalt-incorporated COF/graphene hybrid aerogel shows high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performances with an overpotential of 300 and 275 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, respectively, under alkaline conditions. When applied to an electrochemical water-splitting electrolyzer, it is able to produce hydrogen and oxygen at competitive rates of 1.14 and 0.58 μL s^-1, respectively, under ambient conditions, demonstrating its potential for practical applications.

Tri-templating Synthesis of Multilevel Mesoporous Silica Microspheres with a Complex Interior Structure for Efficient CO2 Capture and Catalysis

Multilevel porous architectures with microscopic shape control and tailor-made complex structures offer great potential for various innovative applications, but their elaborate design and synthesis have remained a scientific and technological challenge. Herein, we report a simple and effective tri-templating method, in which microscale Pickering droplets, nanoscale polystyrene colloids (PS), and molecular cetyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles are synchronously employed, for the fabrication of such micro-nanohierarchical mesoporous silica microspheres. In this protocol, Pickering droplet-directed interfacial sol-gel growth and its spatially confined surfactant assembly-directed sol-gel coating on PS suspensions are coupled together, enabling the successful formation of structured mesoporous silica that consists of numerous nanocompartments enclosed by a permeable shell. By varying the quantity of PS colloidal templates, rational regulation of the complex interior structure is achieved. Also, ascribed to the multilevel arrangement, this peculiar architecture not only shows desirable fast mass transport of external molecules but also possesses easy handling ability. After loading with tetraethylenepentamine or enzyme species, the yielded microspherical CO₂ sorbents or immobilized biocatalysts, respectively, exhibit enhanced CO₂ capture capacity and enzymatic catalysis efficiency. Notably, taking advantage of their microscopic characteristics, the immobilized biocatalysts could be ideally packed in a fixed-bed reactor for long-term continuous-flow enzymatic reactions. This tri-templating strategy provides a new synthetic route to access other multilevel microscopic materials with fascinating complex structures and paves a way to promote their practical applications.

Reticular Nanoscience: Bottom-Up Assembly Nanotechnology

The chemistry of metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) is perhaps the most diverse and inclusive among the chemical sciences, and yet it can be radically expanded by blending it with nanotechnology. The result is reticular nanoscience, an area of reticular chemistry that has an immense potential in virtually any technological field. In this perspective, we explore the extension of such an interdisciplinary reach by surveying the explored and unexplored possibilities that framework nanoparticles can offer. We localize these unique nanosized reticular materials at the juncture between the molecular and the macroscopic worlds, and describe the resulting synthetic and analytical chemistry, which is fundamentally different from conventional frameworks. Such differences are mirrored in the properties that reticular nanoparticles exhibit, which we described while referring to the present state-of-the-art and future promising applications in medicine, catalysis, energy-related applications, and sensors. Finally, the bottom-up approach of reticular nanoscience, inspired by nature, is brought to its full extension by introducing the concept of augmented reticular chemistry. Its approach departs from a single-particle scale to reach higher mesoscopic and even macroscopic dimensions, where framework nanoparticles become building units themselves and the resulting supermaterials approach new levels of sophistication of structures and properties.

Insights on Luminescent Micro- and Nanospheres of Infinite Coordination Polymers

Coordination polymers have been extensively studied in recent years. Some of these materials can exhibit several properties such as permanent porosity, high surface area, thermostability and light emission, as well as open sites for chemical functionalization. Concerning the fact that this kind of compounds are usually solids, the size and morphology of the particles are important parameters when an application is desired. Inside this context, there is a subclass of coordination polymers, named infinite coordination polymers (ICPs), which auto-organize as micro- or nanoparticles with low crystallinity. Specifically, the particles exhibiting spherical shapes and reduced sizes can be better dispersed, enter cells much easier than bulk crystals and be converted to inorganic materials by topotactic transformation. Luminescent ICPs, in particular, can find applications in several areas, such as sensing probes, light-emitting devices and bioimaging. In this review, we present the state-of-the-art of ICP-based spherical particles, including the growth mechanisms, some applications for luminescent ICPs and the challenges to overcome in future commercial usage of these materials.

Surfactant-assisted synthesis of titanium nanoMOFs for thin film fabrication

We use dodecanoic acid as a modulator to yield titanium MOF nanoparticles with good control of size and colloid stability and minimum impact to the properties of the framework to enable direct fabrication of crystalline, porous thin films.

Assembly and Covalent Cross-Linking of an Amine-Functionalised Metal-Organic Cage

The incorporation of reactive functional groups onto the exterior of metal-organic cages (MOCs) opens up new opportunities to link their well-defined scaffolds into functional porous solids. Amine moieties offer access to a rich catalogue of covalent chemistry; however, they also tend to coordinate undesirably and interfere with MOC formation, particular in the case of Cu₂ paddlewheel-based MOCs. We demonstrate that tuning the basicity of an aniline-functionalized ligand enables the self-assembly of a soluble, amine-functionalized Cu₄L₄ lantern cage (1). Importantly, we show control over the coordinative propensity of the exterior amine of the ligand, which enables us to isolate a crystalline, two-dimensional metal-organic framework composed entirely of MOC units (2). Furthermore, we show that the nucleophilicity of the exterior amine of 1 can be accessed in solution to generate a cross-linked cage polymer (3) via imine condensation.

Emergent electrochemical functions and future opportunities of hierarchically constructed metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks

Designing spatial and architectural features across from the molecular to bulk scale is one of the most important topics in materials science which has received a lot of attention in recent years. Looking back to the past research, findings on the influences of spatial features denoted as porous structures on the applications related to mass transport phenomena have been widely studied in traditional inorganic materials, such as ceramics over the past two decades. However, due to the difficulties in precise control of the porous structures at the molecular level in this class of materials, the mechanistic understanding of the effects of spatial and architectural features across from the molecular level to meso-/macroscopic scale is still lacking, especially in electrochemical reactions. Further understanding of fundamental electrochemical functions in well-defined architectures is indispensable for the further advancement of key next-generation energy devices. Furthermore, creating periodic porosity in reticular structures is starting to be recognized as an emerging approach to control the electronic structure of materials. In this review, we focus on the investigations on preparing well-defined molecular-level crystalline porous materials known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) into hierarchically constructed architectures from molecular structures lower than the reticular frameworks to meso-/macroscopic scale structures. By connecting well-defined nanosized porous structures in MOFs/COFs and additional length-scale space or shapes, emergent electrochemical functions towards emerging devices, such as beyond Li-ion batteries including all-solid-state rechargeable batteries, are expected to be obtained. By summarizing recent advancements in synthetic strategies of hierarchically constructed MOF/COF based materials and fundamental investigation of their structural effect in a wide spectrum of electrochemical applications, we highlight the importance and future direction of this developing field of hierarchically constructed MOFs/COFs, while emphasizing the required chemical stability of the MOFs/COFs which meet the use in the game-changing electrochemical devices.

Artificial Bioaugmentation of Biomacromolecules and Living Organisms for Biomedical Applications

The synergistic union of nanomaterials with biomaterials has revolutionized synthetic chemistry, enabling the creation of nanomaterial-based biohybrids with distinct properties for biomedical applications. This class of materials has drawn significant scientific interest from the perspective of functional extension via controllable coupling of synthetic and biomaterial components, resulting in enhancement of the chemical, physical, and biological properties of the obtained biohybrids. In this review, we highlight the forefront materials for the combination with biomacromolecules and living organisms and their advantageous properties as well as recent advances in the rational design and synthesis of artificial biohybrids. We further illustrate the incredible diversity of biomedical applications stemming from artificially bioaugmented characteristics of the nanomaterial-based biohybrids. Eventually, we aim to inspire scientists with the application horizons of the exciting field of synthetic augmented biohybrids.

Self-sorting of porous Cu4L2L'2 metal-organic cages composed of isomerisable ligands

We report the self-sorting of a dynamic combinatorial library (DCL) of metal-organic cages composed of a rotationally isomerisable ligand. Convergence of the DCL occurs upon crystallisation and leads to low-symmetry Cu4L2L'2 cages that display differing porosities based on their overall shape and ligand configuration.

Beyond Frameworks: Structuring Reticular Materials across Nano-, Meso-, and Bulk Regimes

Reticular materials are of high interest for diverse applications, ranging from catalysis and separation to gas storage and drug delivery. These open, extended frameworks can be tailored to the intended application through crystal-structure design. Implementing these materials in application settings, however, requires structuring beyond their lattices, to interface the functionality at the molecular level effectively with the macroscopic world. To overcome this barrier, efforts in expressing structural control across molecular, nano-, meso-, and bulk regimes is the essential next step. In this Review, we give an overview of recent advances in using self-assembly as well as externally controlled tools to manufacture reticular materials over all the length scales. We predict that major research advances in deploying these two approaches will facilitate the use of reticular materials in addressing major needs of society.

Polymerization in MOF-Confined Nanospaces: Tailored Architectures, Functions, and Applications

This feature article describes recent trends and advances in structuring network polymers using a coordination-driven metal-organic framework (MOF)-based template approach to demonstrate the concept of crystal-controlled polymerization in confined nanospaces, forming tailored architectures ranging from simple linear one-dimensional macromolecules to tunable three-dimensional cross-linked network polymers and interwoven molecular architectures. MOF-templated network polymers combine the characteristics and advantages of crystalline MOFs (high porosity, structural regularity, and designability) with the intrinsic behaviors of soft polymers (flexibility, processability, stability, or biocompatibility) with widespread application possibilities and tunable properties. The article ends with a summary of the remaining challenges to be addressed, and future research opportunities in this field are discussed.
