Side-On Bonded Beryllium Dinitrogen Complexes

Pentacoordinated pyramidal structures and bonding properties of WN10-/0: anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations

Anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to investigate the structural and bonding properties of WN10-/0. The electron affinity of WN10 is measured to be 1.582 ± 0.030 eV. The frequency of the NN stretch in WN10 is measured to be 2170 ± 80 cm-1, which is red-shifted with respect to that of the dinitrogen molecule indicating that the NN bonds are weakened in WN10. The theoretical adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) and vertical detachment energy (VDE) of WN10- obtained by calculations at the CCSD(T)/CBS level agree well with experimental results. The structures of WN10-/0 are C4v symmetric pentacoordinated pyramidal structures with five end-on dinitrogen ligands. Our experiments show that the peak of WN10- is dominant in the mass spectrum of anionic WNn, whereas the mass peak of WN12+ is dominant in the mass spectrum of cationic WNn, implying that the stabilities of WNn clusters are strongly related to their charge states.

InnTl4-nH+ (n = 0∼4): Tetracoordinate Hydrogen in a Planar Fashion?

The recent report of planar tetracoordinate hydrogen (ptH) in In4H+ is very intriguing in planar hypercoordinate chemistry. Our high-level CCSD(T) calculations revealed that the proposed D4h-symmetric ptH In4H+ is a first-order saddle point with an imaginary frequency in the out-of-plane mode of the hydrogen atom. In fact, at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV5Z/aug-cc-pV5Z-PP level, the C4v isomer, with the H atom located 0.70 Å above the In4 plane, is 0.5 kcal/mol more stable than the D4h isomer. However, given the small perturbation from planarity and essentially barrierless C4v ↔ D4h ↔ C4v transition, the vibrationally averaged structure can still be considered as a planar. Extending our exploration to the InnTl4-nH+ (n = 0-3) systems, we found all these ptH structures, except for In2Tl2H+, to be the putative global minimum. The single σ-delocalized interaction between the central hydrogen atom and InnTl4-n ligand rings proves pivotal in establishing planarity and aromaticity and conferring substantial stability upon these rule-breaking ptH species.

BeM(CO)3- (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and BeM(CO)3 (M = Ni, Pd, Pt): Triply bonded terminal beryllium in zero oxidation state

We perform detailed potential energy surface explorations of BeM(CO)3- (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and BeM(CO)3 (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) using both single-reference and multireference-based methods. The present results at the CASPT2(12,12)/def2-QZVPD//M06-D3/def2-TZVPPD level reveal that the global minimum of BeM(CO)3- (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and BePt(CO)3 is a C3v symmetric structure with an 1A1 electronic state, where Be is located in a terminal position bonded to M along the center axis. For other cases, the C3v symmetric structure is a low-lying local minimum. Although the present complexes are isoelectronic with the recently reported BFe(CO)3- complex having a B-Fe quadruple bond, radial orbital-energy slope (ROS) analysis reveals that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in the title complexes is slightly antibonding in nature, which bars a quadruple bonding assignment. Similar weak antibonding nature of HOMO in the previously reported BeM(CO)4 (M = Ru, Os) complexes is also noted in ROS analysis. The bonding analysis through energy decomposition analysis in combination with the natural orbital for chemical valence shows that the bonding between Be and M(CO)3q (q = -1 for M = Co, Rh, Ir and q = 0 for M = Ni, Pd, Pt) can be best described as Be in the ground state (1S) interacting with M(CO)30/- via dative bonds. The Be(spσ) → M(CO)3q σ-donation and the complementary Be(spσ) ← M(CO)3q σ-back donation make the overall σ bond, which is accompanied by two weak Be(pπ) ← M(CO)3q π-bonds. These complexes represent triply bonded terminal beryllium in an unusual zero oxidation state.

Screening seven-electron boron-centered radicals for dinitrogen activation

The activation of dinitrogen is significant as nitrogen-containing compounds play an important role in industries. However, the inert NN triple bond caused by its large HOMO-LUMO gap (10.8 eV) and high bond dissociation energy (945 kJ mol-1 ) renders its activation under mild conditions particularly challenging. Recent progress shows that a few main group species can mimic transition metal complexes to activate dinitrogen. Here, we demonstrate that a series of seven-electron (7e) boron-centered radical can be used to activate N2 via density functional theory calculations. It is found that boron-centered radicals containing amine ligand perform best on the thermodynamics of dinitrogen activation. In addition, when electron-donating groups are introduced at the boron atom, these radicals can be used to activate N2 with low reaction barriers. Further analysis suggests that the electron transfer from the boron atom to the π* orbitals of dinitrogen is essential for its activation. Our findings suggest great potential of 7e boron radicals in the field of dinitrogen activation.

Preparation of a Compound with a SiII -SiIV -SiII Bonding Arrangement

Herein, we report the synthesis of a rare bis-silylene, 1, in which two SiII atoms are bridged by a SiIV atom. Compound 1 contains an unusual SiII -SiIV -SiII bonding arrangement with SiII -SiIV bond distances of 2.4212(8) and 2.4157(7) Å. Treatment of 1 with Fe(CO)5 afforded a dinuclear Fe0 complex 2 with two unusually long Si-Si bonds (2.4515(8) and 2.4488(10) Å). We have also carried out a detailed computational study to understand the nature of the Si-Si bonds in these compounds. Natural bond orbital (NBO) and energy decomposition analysis-natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) analyses reveal that the Si-Si bonds in 1 and 2 are of an electron-sharing nature.

Unveiling the Anomaly of Reduction of Carborane-bis-silylene-Stabilised Silylone/Germylone Leading to Unusual Oxidation of Si0 /Ge0 to SiI /GeI with EDA-NOCV Analyses

Researchers have successfully isolated Si0 /Ge0 species, termed silylone and germylone, with two lone pairs of electrons on them. These elusive compounds have been stabilised in singlet ground states by using different donor base ligands. Driess et al. in particular have made strides in this area, isolating carborane-bis-silylene-stabilised silylone/germylone and their N+ /Pb analogues. Carborane (C2 B10 H10 ) plays a pivotal role as a redox-active ligand, converting from closo-carborane to nido-carborane with the addition of two electrons. Notably, anomalous oxidation of Si0 /Ge0 centres in carborane-bis-silylene-stabilised species to SiI /GeI has been reported, resulting in the formation of dimeric SiI -SiI /GeI -GeI di-cationic units. The energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) study focuses on the carborane-bis-silylene ligand in the free state, and its three other species, including silylone/germylone species. Interestingly, it reveals that the carborane unit in an anionic doublet state tends to form one electron-sharing bond and one dative bond with the counter fragment in its cationic doublet state. This helps us to rationalise why the carborane unit undergoes intramolecular electronic rearrangements leading to the formation of a di-anionic carborane unit with a significantly elongated C-C bond (2.38-2.68 Å) and undergoes unusual oxidation of Si0 /Ge0 to SiI /GeI .

Organometallic Allene [(μ-C)(Fe(CO)4 )2 ]: Bridging Carbon Showing Transformation from Classical Electron-Sharing Bonding to Double σ-Donor and Double π-Acceptor Ligation

Allenes (R2 C=C=CR2 ) have been traditionally perceived to feature localized orthogonal π-bonds between the carbon centres. We have carried out quantum-mechanical studies of the organometallic allenes envisioned by the isolobal replacement of the terminal CH2 groups by the d8 Fe(CO)4 fragment. Our studies have identified two organometallic allenes viz. D2d symmetric [(μ-C)(Fe(CO)4 )2 ] (2) and D3 symmetric [(μ-C)(Fe(CO)4 )2 ] (3) with trigonal bipyramidal coordination at the Fe atoms. Compound 2 features the bridging carbon atom in an equatorial position with respect to the ligands on the TM centre, while 3 features the central carbon atom in an axial position. The bis-pseudoallylic anionic delocalisation proposed in the C2-C1-C3 spine of organic allene is retained in the organometallic allene 2, and is transformed to a typical three-centre bis-allylic anionic delocalisation in the organometallic allene 3. The topological analysis of electron density also indicates a bis-allylic anionic type delocalisation in the organometallic allenes. The quantitative bonding analysis using the EDA-NOCV method suggests a transition from classical electron-sharing bonding between the central carbon atom and the terminal groups in 1 to donor-acceptor bonding in 3. Meanwhile, both electron-sharing and donor-acceptor bonding models are found to be probable heuristic bonding representations in the organometallic allene 2.

Open shell versus closed shell bonding interaction in cyclopropane derivatives: EDA-NOCV analyses

Cyclopropane ring is a very common motif in organic/bio-organic compounds. The chemical bonding of this strained ring is taught to all chemistry students. This three-membered cyclic, C3 ring is quite reactive which has attracted both, synthetic and theoretical chemists to rationalize/correlate its stability and bonding with its reactivity and physical properties over a century. There are a few bonding models (mainly the Bent-Bond model and Walsh model) of this C3 ring that are debated to date. Herein, we have carried out energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) to study the two most reactive bonds of cyclopropane rings of 49 different organic compounds containing different functional groups to obtain a much deeper bonding insight toward a more general bonding model of this class of compounds. The EDA-NOCV analyses of fragment orbitals and susequent bond formation revealed that the nature of the CC bond of the cyclopropane (splitting two bonds at a time out of three CC bonds) ring is preferred to form two dative covalent CC bonds (between a singlet olefin-fragment and an excited singlet carbene-fragment with a vacant sp2 orbital and a filled p-orbital) for the majority (37/49) of compounds over two covalent electron sharing bonds in some (7/49) compounds (between an excited triplet olefin and triplet carbene), while a few (5/49) compounds show flexibility to adopt either the electron sharing or dative covalent bond as both are equally possible. The effects of functional groups on the nature of chemical bond in cyclopropane rings have been studied in detail. Our bonding analyses are in line with the QTAIM analyses which produce small negative values of the Laplacian, significantly positive values of bond ellipticity, and accumulation of electron densities around the ring critical point of C3 -rings. These corresponding QTAIM parameters of C3 -rings are quite different for CC single bonds of normal hydrocarbons as expected. The chemical bonding in the majority of cyclopropane rings can be very similar to those of metal-olefin systems.

Inorganometallic allenes [(Mn(η5-C5H5)(CO)2)2(μ-E)] (E = Si-Pb): bis-allylic anionic delocalisation similar to organometallic allene but differential σ-donation and π-backdonation

The chemistry of heavy group-14 tetrel atoms is known to diverge from that of the lighter congener carbon. Here, we report the structure and bonding in inorganometallic allenes [(MnCp(CO)2)2(μ-E)] (2E, E = Si-Pb; Cp = η5-C5H5). These inorganometallic allenes are structurally similar to the lighter organometallic analog [(MnCp(CO)2)2(μ-C)] (2C). The bonding analysis of these compounds at the M06/def2-TZVPP//BP86/def2-SVP level of theory identifies a linear Mn-E-Mn spine with delocalised, mutually orthogonal π-systems across this back-bone. This results in a bis-allylic anionic bonding scenario. However, the strength of the Mn-E bonding is found to be weaker in these inorganometallic allenes. The energy decomposition analysis at the BP86/TZ2P//BP86/def2-SVP level of theory further reveals that the bonding in these compounds cannot be represented by one unique heuristic bonding model, but multiple bonding models. For all 2E (E = C-Pb), the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson bonding model is one of the best bonding representations, where the central tetrel atom acts as a 4e- σ-donor and 4e- π-acceptor. The bonding analysis indicates that the carbon atom in the organometallic allene acts as a better π-acceptor than σ-donor, while the heavier tetrel atoms in the inorganometallic allenes are better σ-donors than π-acceptors. The npz-orbital is found to be a better σ-donor than the valence ns-orbital. However, when the bonding representation is changed to a traditional electron-sharing model, the contribution from the ns-orbital was found to be the largest in comparison to the interaction from the remaining three valence np-orbitals. It can be suggested that the ns-orbitals contribute more towards chemical bonding when participating via an electron-sharing interaction than a donor-acceptor interaction.

Dinitrogen Activation by Heteronuclear Bimetallic Cluster Anion FeV- in the Gas Phase

Nitrogen activation is a significant but difficult project in the chemical area. Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and calculated results are used to investigate the reaction mechanism of the heteronuclear bimetallic cluster FeV^- toward N₂ activation. The results clearly show that N₂ can be fully activated by FeV^- at room temperature, forming the FeV(μ₂-N)₂^- complex with the totally ruptured N≡N bond. Electronic structure analysis reveals that the activation of N₂ by FeV^- is achieved by the electron transfer of bimetallic atoms and electron back-donation to the metal core, which demonstrates that heteronuclear bimetallic anionic clusters are very important to nitrogen activation. This study provides important information for the rational design of synthetic ammonia catalysts.

Bonding and stability of elusive silaboryne (SiB) and germaboryne (GeB) with donor base ligands

Stabilizing the exotic chemical species possessing multiple bonds is often extremely challenging due to insufficient orbital overlap, especially involving one heavier element. Bulky aryl groups and/or carbene as ligand have previously stabilized the SiSi, GeGe, and BB triple bonds. Herein, theoretical calculations have been carried out to shed light on the stability and bonding of elusive silaboryne/germaboryne (Si/GeB triple bond) stabilized by donor base ligands ((cAAC)BE(Me)(L); E = Si, L = cAAC^Me , NHC^Me , PMe₃ ; E = Ge, L = cAAC^Me ). The heavier analogues (Sn, Pb) have been further studied for comparison. Additionally, the effects of bulky substituents at the Si and N atoms on the structural parameters and stability of those species have been investigated. Energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV; for Si) showed that cAAC/NHC ligands could stabilize the exotic BSi-Me species more efficiently than PMe₃ ligands. The BSi partial triple bond of the corresponding species possesses a mixture of one covalent electron sharing BSi σ-bond and two dative π-bonds (B ← Si, B → Si).

Achieving Control over the Reduction/Coupling Dichotomy of N2 by Boron Metallomimetics

We report a detailed computational and experimental study of the fixation and reductive coupling of dinitrogen with low-valent boron compounds. Consistent with our mechanistic findings, the selectivity toward nitrogen fixation or coupling can be controlled through either steric bulk or the reaction conditions, allowing for the on-demand synthesis of nitrogen chains. The electronic structure and intriguing magnetic properties of intermediates and products of the reaction of dinitrogen with borylenes are also elucidated using high-level computational approaches.

Dismantlement of ammonia upon interaction with Ben (n ≤ 10) clusters

The interaction of ammonia with Be_n (n < 1-10) clusters has been investigated by density functional theory and ab initio calculations. The main conclusion is that, regardless of the size of the Be cluster, neither the structure of ammonia nor that of the Be clusters are preserved due to a systematic dissociation of its NH bonds and a spontaneous H-shift toward the available Be atoms. This H migration not only leads to rather stable BeH bonds, but dramatically enhances the strength of the BeN bonds as well. Accordingly, the maximum stability is found for the interaction with the beryllium trimer, leading to a complex with three NBe and three BeH bonds. Another maximum in stability, although lower than that reached for n = 3, is found for the Be heptamer, since from n = 6, a new NBe bond is formed, so that complexes from n = 6 to n = 10 are characterized by the formation of a NBe₄ moiety, whose stability reaches a maximum at n = 7. The bonding characteristics of the different species formed are analyzed by means of AIM, NBO, ELF and AdNDP approaches.

Spectroscopic Identification of the Dinitrogen Fixation and Activation by Metal Carbide Cluster Anions PtCn- (n = 4-6)

Nitrogen fixation is confronted with great challenges in the field of chemistry. Herein, we report that single metal carbides PtC_n^- and PtC_nN₂^- (n = 4-6) are indispensable intermediates in the process of nitrogen fixation by mass spectrometry coupled with anionic photoelectron spectroscopy, quantum chemical calculations, and simulated density-of-state spectra. The most stable isomers of these cluster anions are characterized to have linear chain structures. The fixation and activation of dinitrogen are facilitated by the charge transfer from Pt and C_n to N₂. The significance of π back-donation of the 5d orbital of the Pt atom to the antibonding π orbits of N₂ for dinitrogen fixation and activation is discussed in detail. This study not only provides a theoretical basis at the molecular level for the activation of dinitrogen by mononuclear metal carbide clusters but also provides a new paradigm for dinitrogen fixation.

Hitting the Bull's Eye: Stable HeBeOH+ Complex

It is now known that the heavier noble gases (Ng=Ar-Rn) show some varying degrees of reactivity with a gradual increase in reactivity along Ar-Rn. However, because of their very small size and very high ionization potential, helium and neon are the hardest targets to crack. Although few neon complexes are isolated at very low temperatures, helium needs very extreme situations like very high pressure. Here, we find that protonated BeO, BeOH⁺ can bind helium and neon spontaneously at room temperature. Therefore, extreme conditions like very low temperature and/or high pressure will not be required for their experimental isolation. The Ng-Be bond strength is very high for their heavier homologs and the bond strength shows a gradual increase from He to Rn. Moreover, the Ng-Be attractive energy is almost exclusively originated from the orbital interaction which is composed of one Ng(s/p_σ )→BeOH⁺ σ-donation and two weaker Ng(p_π )→BeOH⁺ π-donations, except for helium. Helium uses its low-lying vacant 2p orbitals to accept π-electron density from BeOH⁺ . Previously, such electron-accepting ability of helium was used to explain a somewhat stronger helium bond than neon for neutral complexes. However, the present results indicate that such π-back donations are too weak in nature to decide any energetic trend between helium and neon.

Stability and bonding of carbon(0)-iron-N2 complexes relevant to nitrogenase co-factor: EDA-NOCV analyses

The factors/structural features which are responsible for the binding, activation and reduction of N₂ to NH₃ by FeMoco of nitrogenase have not been completely understood well. Several relevant model complexes by Holland et al. and Peters et al. have been synthesized, characterized and studied by theoretical calculations. For a matter of fact, those complexes are much different than real active N₂ -binding Fe-sites of FeMoco, which possesses a central C(4-) ion having an eight valence electrons as an μ₆ -bridge. Here, a series of [(S₃ C(0))Fe(II/I/0)-N₂ ]^n- complexes in different charged/spin states containing a coordinated σ- and π-donor C(0)-atom which possesses eight outer shell electrons [carbone, (Ph₃ P)₂ C(0); Ph₃ P→C(0)←PPh₃ ] and three S-donor sites (i.e. ^- S-Ar), have been studied by DFT, QTAIM, and EDA-NOCV calculations. The effect of the weak field ligand on Fe-centres and the subsequent N₂ -binding has been studied by EDA-NOCV analysis. The role of the oxidation state of Fe and N₂ -binding in different charged and spin states of the complex have been investigated by EDA-NOCV analyses. The intrinsic interaction energies of the Fe-N₂ bond are in the range from -42/-35 to -67 kcal/mol in their corresponding ground states. The S₃ C(0) donor set is argued here to be closer to the actual coordination environment of one of the six Fe-centres of nitrogenase. In comparison, the captivating model complexes reported by Holland et al. and Peter et al. possess a stronger π-acceptor C-ring (S₂ C_ring donor, π-C donor) and stronger donor set like CP₃ (σ-C donor) ligands, respectively.

The Labile Nature of Air Stable Ni(II)/Ni(0)-phosphine/Olefin Catalysts/Intermediates: EDA-NOCV Analysis

Metal ions-based inorganic-organic hybrid composites are often reported acting as good to excellent catalysts with various substrate scopes under milder reaction conditions. The active catalyst of a catalytic cycle is sometimes proposed to be a short-lived reactive intermediate species. A three coordinate (L-Me)Ni(II) intermediate species [L-Me = O 2 N donor dianionic ligand] can bind with short-lived carbene-ester ligands to produce four coordinate Ni(II) species which can act as carbene transfer intermediates under suitable reaction conditions for C-H functionalization or cyclopropanation reactions. The dissociation of phosphine (PPh 3 ) from the Ni(II) centre of (L-Me)Ni(II)(PPh 3 ) ( 1a ) and binding of short lived carbene esters (:CR 1 -CO 2 R 2 ; R 1 = H, Ph; R 2 = aliphatic group; 2-4 and other carbenes; 5-10 ) to Ni(II) rationalize the phenomenon in solution. Air stable Ni(0)-olefin complexes/intermediates ( 12-18 ) have recently been shown to mediate a variety of organic transformations. This analysis will further help organic/organometallic chemists to rationalize the design and synthesis of future catalysts for organic transformation. EDA-NOCV calculations have been performed to shed light on the stability and bonding of those species. Additionally, our analysis provides a proper reason why the analogous (L-Me)Pd-PPh 3 complex ( 1b ) does not dissociate in solution and hence, a similar catalytic product has not been isolated from identical reaction conditions. The stability and the labile nature of Ni(II/0) complexes has been investigated by state-of-the-art EDA-NOCV analyses.

Uncovering the hidden reactivity of benzyne/aryne precursors utilized under milder condition: Bonding and stability studies by EDA-NOCV analyses

Arenes [C₆ H₃ R(TMS)(OTf); also called benzyne/aryne precursors] containing inter-related leaving groups Me₃ Si (TMS) and CF₃ SO₃ (OTf) on the adjacent positions (1,2-position) are generally converted to their corresponding aryne-intermediates via the addition of fluoride anion (F^- ) and subsequent elimination of TMS and OTf groups. This reaction is believed to proceed via the formation of an anionic intermediate [C₆ H₄ (TMS-F)(OTf)]^- . The EDA-NOCV analysis (EDA-NOCV = energy decomposition analysis-natural orbital for chemical valence) of over 35 such precursors of varied types have been reported to reveal bonding and stability of C_Ar Si and COTf bonds. EDA-NOCV showed that the nature of the C_Ar Si bond of C₆ H₃ R(TMS)(OTf) can be expressed as both dative and electron sharing [C_Ar Si, C_Ar →Si]. The C_Ar OTf bond, on the other hand, can be described explicitly as dative [C_Ar ←OTf]. The nature of C_Ar Si bond of [C₆ H₄ (TMS-F)(OTf)]^- exclusively changes to covalent dative σ-bond C_Ar →S(Me)3F on the attachment of F^- to the TMS group of C₆ H₄ (TMS)(OTf). Introduction of σ-electron withdrawing group (like OMe, NMe₂ , and NO₂ ) to the ortho-position of the TMS group of functionalized arynes C₆ H₃ R(TMS)(OTf) prefer to have a covalent dative σ-bond (C_Ar →Si) over an electron-sharing covalent σ-bond (C_Ar Si). If this σ-electron withdrawing group is shifted from ortho-position to meta- and para-positions, then the preference for a dative bond decreases significantly, implying that the electronic effect on the nature of chemical bonds affects through bond paths. This effect dies with distance, similar to the well-known inductive effect.

Recent Progress in Dinitrogen Activation by Gas-Phase Metal Species

Understanding the mechanisms to activate and functionalize dinitrogen (N₂) is of great importance for the rational design of nitrogen-fixation catalysts. Reactions of gas-phase species with N₂ are being actively studied to understand the bond activation and formation processes at a strictly molecular level. This Perspective provides an overview of the recent progress in combined experimental and theoretical studies on the activation and functionalization of N₂ by gas-phase metal species. New mechanistic insights into N₂ molecular adsorption, N≡N cleavage, and N-X (X = C, B, and H) formation have been introduced, in which the new reaction channels of ejecting neutral metal fragments and the coupling reactions of N₂ with other molecules are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and outlooks of N₂ activation in the gas phase are discussed as well.

Nitrogen fixation and transformation with main group elements

Nitrogen fixation is essential for the maintenance of life and development of society, however, the large bond dissociation energy and nonpolarity of the triple bond constitute a considerable challenge. The transition metals, by virtue of their combination of empty and occupied d orbitals, are prevalent in the nitrogen fixation studies and are continuing to receive a significant focus. The main group metals have always been considered incapable in dinitrogen activation owing to the absence of energetically and symmetrically accessible orbitals. The past decades have witnessed significant breakthroughs in the dinitrogen activation with the main group elements and compounds via either matrix isolation, theoretical calculations or synthetic chemistry. The successful reactions of the low-valent species of the main group elements with inert dinitrogen have been reported via the π back-donation from either the d orbitals (Ca, Sr, Ba) or p orbitals (Be, B, C…). Herein, the significant achievements have been briefly summarized, along with predicting the future developments.

EDA-NOCV analysis of carbene-borylene bonded dinitrogen complexes for deeper bonding insight: A fair comparison with a metal-dinitrogen system

Binding of dinitrogen (N₂ ) to a transition metal center (M) and followed by its activation under milder conditions is no longer impossible; rather, it is routinely studied in laboratories by transition metal complexes. In contrast, binding of N₂ by main group elements has been a challenge for decades, until very recently, an exotic cAAC-borylene (cAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene) species showed similar binding affinity to kinetically inert and non-polar dinitrogen (N₂ ) gas under ambient conditions. Since then, N₂ binding by short lived borylene species has made a captivating news in different journals for its unusual features and future prospects. Herein, we carried out different types of DFT calculations, including EDA-NOCV analysis of the relevant cAAC-boron-dinitrogen complexes and their precursors, to shed light on the deeper insight of the bonding secret (EDA-NOCV = energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence). The hidden bonding aspects have been uncovered and are presented in details. Additionally, similar calculations have been carried out in comparison with a selected stable dinitrogen bridged-diiron(I) complex. Singlet cAAC ligand is known to be an exotic stable species which, combined with the BAr group, produces an intermediate singlet electron-deficient (cAAC)(BAr) species possessing a high lying HOMO suitable for overlapping with the high lying π*-orbital of N₂ via effective π-backdonation. The BN₂ interaction energy has been compared with that of the FeN₂ bond. Our thorough bonding analysis might answer the unasked questions of experimental chemists about how boron compounds could mimic the transition metal of dinitrogen binding and activation, uncovering hidden bonding aspects. Importantly, Pauling repulsion energy also plays a crucial role and decides the binding efficiency in terms of intrinsic interaction energy between the boron-center and the N₂ ligand.

Bonding analysis of the C2 precursor Me3E–C2–I(Ph)FBF3 (E = C, Si, Ge)

A series of possible precursors for generating C2 with the general formula Me3E–C2–I(Ph)FBF3 [E = C (1), Si (2), and Ge (3)] has been theoretically investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The equilibrium geometries of all species show a linear E–C2–I+ backbone. The inspection of the electronic structure of the Me3E–C2 bond by energy decomposition analysis coupled with the natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) method suggests a combination of electron sharing C–C σ-bond and v weak π-dative bond between Me3C and C2 fragments in the doublet state for species 1 (E = C). For species 2 (Si) and 3 (Ge), the analysis reveals σ-dative Me3E–C2 bonds (E = Si, Ge; Me3E←C2) resulting from the interaction of singly charged (Me3E)+ and (C2–IPh(BF4))− fragments in their singlet states. The C2–I bond is diagnosed as an electron sharing σ-bond in all three species, 1, 2 and 3.

Stabilization of Interstellar CSi2 Species by Donor Base Ligands: L-CSi2-L; L = cAACMe, NHCMe, and PMe3

The donor ligand bonded singlet (L)₂Si₂C containing a bent Si₂C unit in the middle has been studied by theoretical quantum mechanical calculations (NBO, QTAIM, EDA-NOCV analyses) [L = cAAC, NHC, Me₃P]. EDA-NOCV analysis suggests that this Si₂C is possible to stabilize by a pair of donor base ligands. The bond dissociation energy of the Si₂C fragment is endothermic (85-45 kcal/mol) with a sufficiently high intrinsic interaction energy (ΔE_int = -89 to -48 kcal/mol). Fifty percent of the total stabilization energy arises from electrostatic interactions, and nearly 45% is contributed by covalent orbital interaction between Si₂C and (L)₂ fragments in their singlet states. 75-80% of the orbital interaction energy is contributed by two sets of σ-donation L → SiCSi ← L. The π-back-donation is only 15-10%. The dispersion energy is not negligible (3-5%). The interaction energy is highest for 1 (L = cAAC) among three compounds. Additionally, (cAAC)₂Si₂C-Ni(CO)₃ (4) has been studied. The interaction energy between 1 and Ni(CO)₃ is nearly 61 kcal/mol with the major contribution coming from donation of electron cloud from electron rich Si₂C backbone to empty hybrid orbital of Ni(CO)₃ fragment. A sufficiently strong π-back-donation from (OC)₃Ni to Si₂C has also been identified.

Predicting Dinitrogen Activation by Five-Electron Boron-Centered Radicals

Due to the high bond dissociation energy (945 kJ mol^-1) and the large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap (10.8 eV), dinitrogen activation under mild conditions is extremely challenging. On the other hand, the conventional Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis under harsh conditions consumes more than 1% of the world's annual energy supply. Thus, it is important and urgent to develop an alternative approach for dinitrogen activation under mild conditions. In comparison with transition metals, main group compounds are less explored for nitrogen activation. Here, we carry out density functional theory calculation to screen boron radicals for dinitrogen activation. As a result, the experimentally available seven-electron boron-centered radicals are found to be inactive to N₂ activation, whereas some five-electron boron-centered radicals become favorable for dinitrogen activation, inviting experimental chemists' examination. The principal interacting spin-orbital analyses suggest that a five-electron boron-centered radical can mimic a transition metal on a synergic interaction with dinitrogen in the transition states.

π Back-Donation from a Beryllium Dibromide Fragment at the Expense of Its σ Strength

It is common knowledge that metal-to-ligand π back-donation requires filled atomic orbitals at the metal center. However, we show through a combined experimental and theoretical approach that Be(II)→N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) π back-donation is present in the two carbene adducts [(iPr)BeBr₂] (1) and [(iPr)₂BeBr₂] (2) (iPr = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene). These complexes were characterized with NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy as well as with single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. The unusual bonding situation is understood from the results of energy decomposition analysis in combination with natural orbital for chemical valence and quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules analysis. The obtained findings shed light on the unusually high Be-C bond strength in carbene adducts to beryllium compounds and rationalize their geometry and reactivity.

Cage-···Cage- Interaction: Boron Cluster-Based Noncovalent Bond and Its Applications in Solid-State Materials

Carboranes are boron-carbon clusters with important applications in the fields of materials, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, etc. However, the noncovalent interactions that could determine the solid-state structures and properties of such boron clusters have rarely been investigated. Herein, inspired by the coordinate bond in metallacarborane or ferrocene, the boron cluster-based noncovalent interaction (denoted as cage^-···cage^- interaction) between two nido-carborane clusters was successfully realized by using a pyridinium-based molecular barrier. The X-ray diffraction studies uncover that the cage^-···cage^- interaction has a contacting distance of 5.4-7.0 Å from centroid to centroid in the systems reported here. Theoretical calculations validate the formation of the noncovalent interaction and disclose its repulsive bonding nature that is overcome thanks to the positively charged pyridinium-based framework. Interestingly, such bulk crystalline materials containing the cage^-···cage^- interaction show relevant properties such as full-color absorption in the visible light range and important photothermal effect, which are absent for the control compound without carboranes. This study may offer fundamental insights into the boron cluster-based noncovalent interactions and open a new research avenue to rationally design boron cluster-based materials.

Transition-Metal Chemistry of the Heavier Alkaline Earth Atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba

ConspectusAlkaline earth elements beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium with an ns² valence-shell configuration are usually classified as main-group elements that belong to the s-block atoms. For a long time, the elements were considered to be rather chemically uninteresting atomic species due to preconceived ideas about bonding, structure, and reactivity. They typically use the two ns valence electrons in forming ionic salt compounds with the metal in a formal oxidation state of +2. For the heavier alkaline earth atoms, calcium, strontium, and barium, their (n - 1)d atomic orbitals (AOs) are empty but lie close in energy to the valence np orbitals. Earlier theoretical investigations have already suggested that these elements can employ the (n - 1)d AOs to some extent to form polar bonds in divalent species in which the alkaline earth metal centers are sufficiently positively charged. The d orbital involvement increases from Ca to Sr and markedly in Ba. Thus, barium has been termed an honorary transition metal.Recently, molecular complexes of Ca, Sr, and Ba were prepared in the gas phase and in a low-temperature solid neon matrix and were detected by infrared spectroscopy. An analysis of the electronic structures of [Ba(CO)]⁺, [Ba(CO)]^-, saturated coordinated octacarbonyls [M(CO)₈] and [M(CO)₈]⁺, isoelectronic dinitrogen complexes [M(N₂)₈] and [M(N₂)₈]⁺, and the tribenzene complexes [M(Bz)₃] (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) revealed that the metal-ligand bonding can be straightforwardly discussed using the traditional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson (DCD) model as in classical transition-metal complexes. The metal-ligand bonds can be explained with metal → ligand π back donation from occupied metal (n - 1)d AOs to vacant antibonding π molecular orbitals of the ligands with concomitant σ donation from occupied MOs of the ligands to vacant metal d orbitals of the alkaline earth atoms. In addition, heteronuclear Ca-Fe carbonyl cation complexes were also produced in the gas phase. Bonding analysis of the coordination saturated [CaFe(CO)₁₀]⁺ complex implies that it can be described by the bonding interactions between a [Ca(CO)₆]²⁺ fragment and an [Fe(CO)₄]^- anion fragment in forming a Fe → Ca d-d dative bond. The nature of metal-ligand and metal-metal bonding was quantitatively elucidated by the energy decomposition analysis in conjunction with the natural orbitals for the chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) method, which indicate that the (n - 1)d AOs of the alkaline earth metals are the dominant orbitals participating in the covalent interactions, just as typical transition metals. The results indicate that the heavier alkaline earth elements have a much richer covalent chemistry than previously thought. These findings, along with earlier studies, suggest that the heavier alkaline earth atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba should be classified as transition metals rather than main group atoms in the periodic table of the elements. This interesting structural chemistry, together with some recently reported examples of spectacular reactivity, establishes these elements as exciting and promising research targets in current research.

Energy Decomposition Analysis Coupled with Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence and Nucleus-Independent Chemical Shift Analysis of Bonding, Stability, and Aromaticity of Functionalized Fulvenes: A Bonding Insight

The Donor base ligand-stabilized cyclopentadienyl-carbene compounds L-C5H4 (L = H2C, aAAC; (CO2Me)2C, Py; aNHC, NHC, PPh3; SNHC; aAAC = acyclic alkyl(amino) carbene, aNHC = acyclic N-hetero cyclic carbene, NHC = cyclic N-hetero cyclic carbene, SNHC = saturated N-hetero cyclic carbene, Py = pyridine) (1a-1d, 2a-2c, 3) have been theoretically investigated by energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbitals for chemical valence calculation. Among all these compounds, aNHC=C5H4 (2a) and Ph3P=C5H4 (2c) had been reported five decades ago. The bonding analysis of compounds with the general formula L=C5H4 (1a-1d) [L = (H2C, aAAC, (CO2Me)2C, Py] showed that they possess one electron-sharing σ bond and electron-sharing π bond between L and C5H4 neutral fragments in their triplet states as expected. Interestingly, the bonding scenarios have completely changed for L = aNHC, NHC, PPh3, SNHC. The aNHC analogue (2a) prefers to form one electron-sharing σ bond (CL-CC5H4) and dative π bond (CL ← CC5H4) between cationic (aNHC)+ and anionic C5H4 - fragments in their doublet states. Similar bonding scenarios have been observed for NHC (2b) and PPh3 (2c) (PL-CC5H4, PL ← CC5H4) analogues. In contrast, the SNHC and C5H4 neutral fragments of SNHC=C5H4 (3) prefer to form a dative σ bond (CSNHC → CC5H4) and a dative π bond (CSNHC ← CC5H4) in their singlet states. The pyridine analogue 1d is quite different from 2c from the bonding and aromaticity point of view. The nucleus-independent chemical shifts of all the abovementioned species (1-3) corresponding to aromaticity have been computed using the gauge-independent atomic orbital approach.

Infrared Spectroscopy and Bonding of the B(NN)3+ and B2(NN)3,4+ Cation Complexes

The boron-dinitrogen cation complexes B(NN)₃⁺ and B₂(NN)_3,4⁺ are produced in the gas phase and are studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the N-N stretching vibrational frequency region. The geometric and electronic structures are determined by comparison of the experimental spectra with density functional theory calculations. The B(NN)₃⁺ cation is characterized to have a closed-shell singlet ground state with planar D_3h symmetry. The B₂(NN)₃⁺ cation is determined to have a B═B bonded (NN)₂BBNN structure with C_2v symmetry. Two isomers of the B₂(NN)₄⁺ cation contribute to the experimental spectrum. One is a N₂-tagged complex involving a B₂(NN)₃⁺ core ion. Another one is a B-B bonded B₂(NN)₄⁺ complex with a planar D_2h structure. Bonding analyses reveal that the B-NN interactions in these complexes come mainly from covalent orbital interactions, with the NN → B σ donation being stronger than the B → NN π back-donation.

Stabilization of group 14 elements E = C, Si, Ge by hetero-bileptic ligands cAAC, MCOn with push-pull mechanism

The stability and bonding of a series of hetero-diatomic molecules with general formula (cAAC)EM(CO)_n , where cAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene; E = group 14 elements (C, Si, and Ge); M = transition metal (Ni, Fe, and Cr) have been studied by quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and energy decomposition analysis-natural orbital chemical valence (EDA-NOCV). The equilibrium geometries were calculated at the BP86/def2-TZVPP level of theory. The tri-coordinated group 14 complex (1a, 4a, and 7a) in which one of the CO groups is migrated to the central group 14 element from adjacent metal is theoretically found to be more stable when the central atom (E) is carbon. On the other hand, the two-coordinate group 14 element containing metal-complexes (2, 5, 8, 3, 6, and 9) are found to be more stable with their corresponding heavier analogues. The electronic structures of all the molecules have been analyzed by molecular orbital, topological analysis of electron density and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis at the M06/def2-TZVPP//BP86/def2-TZVPP level of theory. The nature of the cAACE and EM bonds has been studied by EDA-NOCV calculations at BP86-D3(BJ)/TZ2P level of theory. The EDA analysis suggests that the bonding of cAACC(CO) can be best represented by electron sharing σ and π interactions, whereas, C(CO)M(CO)_n-1 by dative σ and π interactions. On the other hand, EDA-NOCV calculations suggests both dative σ and π interactions for cAACE and EM(CO)_n bonds of the corresponding Si and Ge analogues having stronger σ- and relatively weaker π-bonds. The topological analysis of electron density supports the closed-shell interaction for the Si and Ge complexes and open-shell interaction for the carbon complexes. The calculated proton affinity and hydride affinity values corroborated well with the present bonding description. This class of complexes might act as efficient future catalysts for different organic transformations due to the presence of electron rich group 14 element and metal carbonyl.

Highly Coordinated Heteronuclear Calcium-Iron Carbonyl Cation Complexes [CaFe(CO)n ]+ (n=5-12) with d-d Bonding

Heteronuclear calcium-iron carbonyl cation complexes in the form of [CaFe(CO)n ]+ (n=5-12) are produced in the gas phase. Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations confirm that the n=10 complex is the coordination saturated ion where a Fe(CO)4 fragment is bonded with a Ca(CO)6 fragment through two side-on bridging carbonyl ligands. Bonding analysis indicates that it is best described by the bonding interactions between a [Ca(CO)6 ]2+ dication and an [Fe(CO)4 ]- anion forming a Fe→Ca d-d dative bond in the [(CO)6 Ca-Fe(CO)4 ]+ structure, which enriches the pool of experimentally observed complexes of calcium that mimic transition metal compounds. The molecule is the first example of a heteronuclear carbonyl complex featuring a d-d bond between calcium and a transition metal.

Bonding in M(NHBMe)2 and M[Mn(CO)5]2 complexes (M=Zn, Cd, Hg; NHBMe=(HCNMe)2B): divalent group 12 metals with zero oxidation state

Quantum chemical studies using density functional theory were carried out on M(NHBMe)2 and M[Mn(CO)5]2 (M=Zn, Cd, Hg) complexes. The calculations suggest that M(NHBMe)2 and M[Mn(CO)5]2 have D2d and D4d symmetry, respectively, with a 1A1 electronic ground state. The bond dissociation energies of the ligands have the order of Zn > Cd > Hg. A thorough bonding analysis using charge and energy decomposition methods suggests that the title complexes are best represented as NHBMe⇆M0⇄NHBMe and Mn(CO)5⇆M0⇄Mn(CO)5 where the metal atom M in the electronic ground state with an ns2 electron configuration is bonded to the (NHBMe)2 and [Mn(CO)5]2 ligands through donor–acceptor interaction. These experimentally known complexes are the first examples of mononuclear complexes with divalent group 12 metals with zero oxidation state that are stable at ambient condition. These complexes represent the rare situation where the ligands act as a strong acceptor and the metal center acts as strong donor. The relativistic effect of Hg leads to a weaker electron donating strength of the 6s orbital, which explains the trend of the bond dissociation energy.

Bonding and stability of donor ligand-supported heavier analogues of cyanogen halides (L')PSi(X)(L)

Fluoro- and chloro-phosphasilynes [X-Si[triple bond, length as m-dash]P (X = F, Cl)] belong to a class of illusive chemical species which are expected to have Si[triple bond, length as m-dash]P multiple bonds. Theoretical investigations of the bonding and stability of the corresponding Lewis base-stabilized species (L')PSi(X)(L) [L' = cAAC^Me (cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene); L = cAAC^Me, NHC^Me (N-heterocyclic carbene), PMe₃, aAAC (acyclic alkyl(amino) carbene); X = Cl, F] have been studied using the energy decomposition analysis-natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) method. The variation of the ligands (L) on the Si-atom leads to different bonding scenarios depending on their σ-donation and π-back acceptance properties. The ligands with higher lying HOMOs prefer profoundly different bonding scenarios than the ligands with lower lying HOMOs. The type of halogen (Cl or F) on the Si-atom was also found to have a significant influence on the overall bonding scenario. The reasonably higher value and endergonic nature of the dissociation energies along with the appreciable HOMO-LUMO energy gap may corroborate to the synthetic viability of the homo and heteroleptic ligand-stabilized elusive PSi(Cl/F) species in the laboratory.

CO-Induced Dinitrogen Fixation and Cleavage Mediated by Boron

The boron atoms react with carbon monoxide and dinitrogen forming the end-on bonded NNBCO complex in solid neon or in nitrogen matrices. The NNBCO complex rearranges to the (η2 -N2 )BCO isomer with a more activated side-on bonded dinitrogen ligand upon visible light excitation. (η2 -N2 )BCO and its weakly CO-coordinated complexes further isomerize to the NBNCO and B(NCO)2 molecules with N-N bond being completely cleaved under UV light irradiation. The geometries, energies and vibrational spectra of the molecules are calculated with quantum chemical methods and the electronic structures are analyzed with charge- and energy-partitioning methods.

Revisiting the Bonding Scenario of Two Donor Ligand Stabilized C2 Species

Quantum chemical calculations using density functional methods were performed for complexes of type L₂C₂ with L = NHC^Me (1), SNHC^Me (2) (S = saturated), cAAC^Me (3), and diamidocarbene (DAC^Me) (4). The equilibrium structures of 1-4 possess almost linear C₄ cores. A high thermochemical stability of the complexes with respect to dissociation, L₂C₂ → C₂ + 2L, is indicated by the large bond dissociation energy following the order 3 > 4 > 2 > 1. The results show that the use of SNHC^Me and DAC^Me as ligands is preferable over NHC^Me. The bonding analysis using charge and energy decomposition methods reveals that (cAAC^Me)₂C₂ and (DAC^Me)₂C₂ possess genuine cumulene C₄ moieties, which results from the electron-sharing bonding between quintet L₂ and quintet C₂ fragments. In contrast, the bonding in (NHC^Me)₂C₂ and (SNHC^Me)₂C₂ comes from a combination of dative and electron-sharing interactions between doublet L₂⁺ and doublet C₂^- fragments.

Dative versus electron-sharing bonding in the isoelectronic argon compounds ArR+ (R = CH3, NH2, OH, and F)

For the series of isoelectronic ArR⁺ (R = CH₃, NH₂, OH, and F) complexes, the nature of the bonding between Ar and R shifts from an Ar → R⁺ dative σ bond in ArCH₃⁺ and ArNH₂⁺ to an Ar⁺–R electron-sharing σ bond in ArOH⁺ and ArF⁺.

Beryllium Atom Mediated Dinitrogen Activation via Coupling with Carbon Monoxide

The reactions of laser-ablated beryllium atoms with dinitrogen and carbon monoxide mixtures form the end-on bonded NNBeCO and side-on bonded (η2 -N2 )BeCO isomers in solid argon, which are predicted by quantum chemical calculations to be almost isoenergetic. The end-on bonded complex has a triplet ground state while the side-on bonded isomer has a singlet electronic ground state. The complexes rearrange to the energetically lowest lying NBeNCO isomer upon visible light excitation, which is characterized to be an isocyanate complex of a nitrene derivative with a triplet electronic ground state. A bonding analysis using a charge- and energy decomposition procedure reveals that the electronic reference state of Be in the NNBeCO isomers has an 2s0 2p2 excited configuration and that the metal-ligand bonds can be described in terms of N2 →Be←CO σ donation and concomitant N2 ←Be→CO π backdonation. The results demonstrate that the activation of N2 with the N-N bond being completely cleaved can be achieved via coupling with carbon monoxide mediated by a main group atom.

Revisiting the Intriguing Electronic Features of the BeOBeC Carbyne and Some Isomers: A Quantum-Chemical Assessment

Extensive high-level quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the rod-shaped molecule BeOBeC, which was recently generated in matrix experiments, exists in two nearly isoenergetic states, the 5 Σ quintet (5 6) and the 3 Σ triplet (3 6). Their IR features are hardly distinguishable at finite temperature. The major difference concerns the mode of spin coupling between the terminal beryllium and carbon atoms. Further, the ground-state potential-energy surface of the [2Be,C,O] system at 4 K is presented and differences between the photochemical and thermal behaviors are highlighted. Finally, a previously not considered, so far unknown C2v -symmetric rhombus-like four-membered ring 3 [Be(O)(C)Be] (3 5) is predicted to represent the global minimum on the potential-energy surface.

Side-On Bonded Beryllium Dinitrogen Complexes

The preparation and spectroscopic identification of the complexes NNBe(η2 -N2 ) and (NN)2 Be(η2 -N2 ) and the energetically higher lying isomers Be(NN)2 and Be(NN)3 are reported. NNBe(η2 -N2 ) and (NN)2 Be(η2 -N2 ) are the first examples of covalently side-on bonded N2 adducts of a main-group element. The analysis of the electronic structure using modern methods of quantum chemistry suggests that NNBe(η2 -N2 ) and (NN)2 Be(η2 -N2 ) should be classified as π complexes rather than metalladiazirines.

Intriguing structural, bonding and reactivity features in some beryllium containing complexes

We highlighted our contributions to Be chemistry which include bond-stretch isomerism in Be₃²⁻ species, Be complexes bound with noble gas, CO, and N₂, Be based nanorotors, and intriguing bonding situations in some Be complexes.
