Ammonia Oxidation Enhanced by Photopotential Generated by Plasmonic Excitation of a Bimetallic Electrocatalyst

Ultra-Small High-Entropy Alloy as Multi-Functional Catalyst for Ammonia Based Fuel Cells

Ammonia fuel cells using carbon-neutral ammonia as fuel are regarded as a fast, furious, and flexible next-generation carbon-free energy conversion technology, but it is limited by the kinetically sluggish ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Platinum can efficiently drive these three types of reactions, but its scale-up application is limited by its susceptibility to poisoning and high cost. In order to reduce the cost and alleviate poisoning, incorporating Pt with various metals proves to be an efficient and feasible strategy. Herein, PtFeCoNiIr/C trifunctional high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalysts are prepared with uniform mixing and ultra-small size of 2 ± 0.5 nm by Joule heating method. PtFeCoNiIr/C exhibits efficient performance in AOR (Jpeak = 139.8 A g-1 PGM), ORR (E1/2 = 0.87 V), and HER (E10 = 20.3 mV), outperforming the benchmark Pt/C, and no loss in HER performance at 100 mA cm-2 for 200 h. The almost unchanged E1/2 in the anti-poisoning test indicates its promising application in real fuel cells powered by ammonia. This work opens up a new path for the development of multi-functional electrocatalysts and also makes a big leap toward the exploration of cost-effective device configurations for novel fuel cells.

Quantification and description of photothermal heating effects in plasmon-assisted electrochemistry

A growing number of reports have demonstrated plasmon-assisted electrochemical reactions, though debate exists around the mechanisms underlying the enhanced activity. Here we address the impact of plasmonic photothermal heating with cyclic voltammetry measurements and finite-element simulations. We find that plasmonic photothermal heating causes a reduction in the hysteresis of the anodic and cathodic waves of the voltammograms along with an increase in mass-transport limiting current density due to convection induced by a temperature gradient. At slow scan rates, a temperature difference as low as 1 K between the electrode surface and bulk electrolytic solution enhances the current density greater than 100%. Direct interband excitation of Au exclusively enhances current density by photothermal heating, while plasmon excitation leads to photothermal and nonthermal enhancements. Our study reveals the role of temperature gradients in plasmon-assisted electrochemistry and details a simple control experiment to account for photothermal heating.

Plasmon induced hot carrier distribution in Ag20 -CO composite

The interaction between plasmons and the molecules leads to the transfer of plasmon-induced hot carriers, presenting innovative opportunities for controlling chemical reactions on sub-femtosecond timescales. Through real-time time-dependent density functional theory simulations, we have investigated the enhancement of the electric field due to plasmon excitation and the subsequent generation and transfer of plasmon-induced hot carriers in a linear atomic chain of Ag20 and an Ag20 -CO composite system. By applying a Gaussian laser pulse tuned to align with the plasmon frequency, we observe a plasmon-induced transfer of hot electrons from the occupied states of Ag to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of CO. Remarkably, there is a pronounced accumulation of hot electrons and hot holes on the C and O atoms. This phenomenon arises from the electron migration from the inter-nuclear regions of the C-O bond towards the individual C and O atoms. The insights garnered from our study hold the potential to drive advancements in the development of more efficient systems for catalytic processes empowered by plasmonic interactions.

Probing local charge transfer processes of Pt-Au heterodimers in plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry by CO stripping techniques

CO-stripping experiments are employed as a highly structure-sensitive and in situ strategy to explore the mechanisms of plasmon-enhanced electrooxidation reactions. By using Pt-Au heterodimers as a model catalyst, the plasmon-induced current and potential changes on Pt and Au sites can be identified and explained.

The plasmonic effect of Cu on tuning CO2 reduction activity and selectivity

Copper (Cu) has been widely used for catalyzing the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), but the plasmonic effect of Cu has rarely been explored for tuning the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR. Herein, we conducted a quantitative analysis on the plasmon-generated photopotential (Ehv) of a Cu nanowire array (NA) photocathode and found that Ehv exclusively reduced the apparent activation energy (Ea) of reducing CO2 to CO without affecting the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, the CO production rate was enhanced by 52.6% under plasmon excitation when compared with that under dark conditions. On further incorporation with a polycrystalline Si photovoltaic device, the Cu NA photocathode exhibits good stability in terms of photocurrent and syngas production (CO : H2 = 2 : 1) within 10 h. This work validates the crucial role of the plasmonic effect of Cu on modulating the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR.

Highly Selective Ammonia Oxidation on BiVO4 Photoanodes Co-catalyzed by Trace Amounts of Copper Ions

High-efficient photoelectrocatalytic direct ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) conducted on semiconductor photoanodes remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we develop a strategy of simply introducing ppm levels of Cu ions (0.5-10 mg/L) into NH3 solutions to significantly improve the AOR photocurrent of bare BiVO4 photoanodes from 3.4 to 6.3 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE , being close to the theoretical maximum photocurrent of BiVO4 (7.5 mA cm-2 ). The surface charge-separation efficiency has reached 90 % under a low bias of 0.8 VRHE . This AOR exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.8 % with the water oxidation reaction (WOR) being greatly suppressed. N2 is the main AOR product with FEs of 71.1 % in aqueous solutions and FEs of 100 % in non-aqueous solutions. Through mechanistic studies, we find that the formation of Cu-NH3 complexes possesses preferential adsorption on BiVO4 surfaces and efficiently competes with WOR. Meanwhile, the cooperation of BiVO4 surface effect and Cu-induced coordination effect activates N-H bonds and accelerates the first rate-limiting proton-coupled electron transfer for AOR. This simple strategy is further extended to other photoanodes and electrocatalysts.

Rhombic dodecahedron nanoframes of PtIrCu with high-index faceted hyperbranched nanodendrites for efficient electrochemical ammonia oxidation via preferred NHx dimerization pathways

Ammonia has been emerging as a sustainable and environmentally friendly fuel. However, direct electrochemical ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) in low-temperature fuel cells seriously suffers from high overpotential and deficient durability. Herein, rhombic dodecahedron nanoframe of platinum iridium copper (PtIrCu) with high-index faceted hyperbranched nanodendrites (RDNF-HNDs) was developed using a one-step self-etching solvothermal method. The framework structure with the high-index facets enables the PtIrCu nanocrystals to expose more effective active sites. They exhibit an ultra-low onset potential of 0.33 V vs. RHE and high mass activity of 26.1 A gPtIr-1 at 0.50 V, which is 140 mV lower and 7.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C in the AOR. In situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy verifies that AOR on PtIrCu RDNF-HNDs prefers to the NHx dimerization pathways, effectively alleviating the poison of Nads and NOx. The theoretical calculation also shows that both introducing Cu atoms into PtIr alloy and increasing the content of Ir in PtIrCu alloy can reduce the reaction energy barrier of electrochemical dehydrogenation from *NH2 to *NH. The specific structure of PtIrCu RDNF-NDs provides a new inspiration to solve the critical issue of electrocatalysts for AOR with low activity and durability.

A MXene@AgAu@PDA nanoplatform loaded with AgAu nanocages for enhancing catalytic activity and antibacterial performance

With the rapid development of social industrialization, environmental problems seriously threaten people's health, especially water pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to construct a multifunctional nanoplatform for different scenarios. Two-dimensional MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets loaded with AgAu bimetallic nanocages have been prepared by a one-step method. First, the in situ generated MXene@Ag is used as an auxiliary template, and then HAuCl4 and dopamine are added for in situ redox-oxidizing polymerization reactions to obtain AgAu catalytic nanocages and the protective polydopamine (PDA) layer which can improve the stability and biocompatibility. MXene and PDA have excellent photothermal conversion ability while hollow AgAu nanocages have strong absorption in the near-infrared region and a local surface plasmonic resonance effect. In comparison to the catalytic reaction rates under dark and room temperature conditions, the catalytic kinetic rate of MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets under near-infrared irradiation increases from 0.13 to 0.69 min-1 mg-1. Density functional theory (DFT) is used to study the electron transfer behavior between AgAu nanocages and MXene nanosheets, and the mechanism of the enhanced catalytic reaction rate is analyzed. Besides, due to its Ag ions and photothermal coupling antibacterial properties, 40 μg mL-1 MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets inactivates nearly all E. coli and S. aureus after irradiation with near-infrared light for 6 min.

Unveiling the Solvent Effect in Plasmon Enhanced Electrochemistry via the Nanoparticle-Impact Technique

Plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry (PEEC) has been observed to facilitate energy conversion systems by converting light energy to chemical energy. However, comprehensively understanding the PEEC mechanism remains challenging due to the predominant use of ensemble-based methodologies on macroscopic electrodes, which fails to measure electron-transfer kinetics due to constraints from mass transport and the averaging effect. In this study, we have employed nanoparticle impact electrochemistry (NIE), a newly developed electroanalytical technique capable of measuring electrochemical dynamics at a single-nanoparticle level under optimal mass transport conditions, along with microscopic electron-transfer theory for data interpretation. By investigating the plasmon enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at individual silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), we have clearly revealed the previously unknown influence of solvent effects within the PEEC mechanism. This finding suggests an additional approach to optimize plasmon-assisted electrocatalysis and electrosynthesis systems.

Superlattice-based Plasmonic Catalysis: Concentrating Light at the Nanoscale to Drive Efficient Nitrogen-to-Ammonia Fixation at Ambient Conditions

Plasmonic catalysis promises green ammonia synthesis but is limited by the need for co-catalysts and poor performances due to weak electromagnetic field enhancement. Here, we use two-dimensional plasmonic superlattices with dense electromagnetic hotspots to boost ambient nitrogen-to-ammonia photoconversion without needing co-catalyst. By organizing Ag octahedra into a square superlattice to concentrate light, the ammonia formation is enhanced by ≈15-fold and 4-fold over hexagonal superlattice and disorganized array, respectively. Our unique catalyst achieves superior ammonia formation rate and apparent quantum yield up to ≈15-fold and ≈10³ -fold, respectively, better than traditional designs. Mechanistic investigations reveal the abundance of intense plasmonic hotspots is crucial to promote hot electron generation and transfer for nitrogen reduction. Our work offers valuable insights to design electromagnetically hot plasmonic catalysts for diverse chemical and energy applications.

Hot Carrier Lifetimes and Electrochemical Water Dissociation Enhanced by Nickel Doping of a Plasmonic Electrocatalyst

Hot carriers generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation of plasmonic metal nanoparticles are known to enhance electrocatalytic reactions. However, the participation of plasmonically generated carriers in interfacial electrochemical reactions is often limited by fast relaxation of these carriers. Herein, we address this challenge by tuning the electronic structure of a plasmonic electrocatalyst. Specifically, we design an electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that consists of nanoparticles of a ternary Cu-Pt-Ni ternary alloy. The CuPt alloy has both plasmonic attributes and electrocatalytic HER activity. Ni doping contributes an electron-deficient 3d band and fully filled 4s band, which promotes water adsorption and prolongs the lifetimes of excited carriers generated by plasmonic excitation. As an outcome, the Cu-Pt-Ni nanoparticles exhibit boosted activity for electrochemical water dissociation and HER under LSPR excitation.

Plasmoelectric Potential in Plasmon-Mediated Electrochemistry

Plasmon-mediated chemical reactions have attracted intensive research interest as a means of achieving desirable reaction yields and selectivity. The energetic charge carriers and elevated local temperature induced by the nonradiative decay of surface plasmons are thought to be responsible for improving reaction outcomes. This study reports that the plasmoelectric potential is another key contributor in plasmon-mediated electrochemistry. Additionally, we disclose a convenient and reliable method for quantifying the specific contributions of the plasmoelectric potential, hot electrons, and photothermal heating to the electroreduction of oxygen at the plasmonic Ag electrode, revealing that the plasmoelectric potential is the dominating nonthermal factor under short-wavelength illumination and moderate electrode bias. This work elucidates novel mechanistic understandings of plasmon-mediated electrochemistry, facilitating high-performance plasmonic electrocatalyst design optimization.

Plasmonic Hot-Electron-Painted Au@Pt Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Detection of H2O2

Plasmon-driven catalysis of metal nanostructures has garnered wide interest. Here, a photogenerated plasmonic hot-electron painting strategy was reported to form Au@Pt composite nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with high catalytic reactivity without using reducing agents. Au nanoparticles, including Au nanospheres (Au NSs), Au nanorods (Au NRs), and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), generated hot electrons under localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation, which made the platinum precursor reduced as a consequence that Pt(0) atoms were painted on the surface of Au NPs to form an asymmetric Pt shell outside the plasmonic Au core. Compared with bare Au NPs, Au@Pt NPs exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of H₂O₂ due to the bimetallic synergistic effect and great dispersion of Au@Pt NP-modified indium tin oxide (Au@Pt NPs/ITO). It exhibited a linear detection of H₂O₂ in a wide concentration range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the plasmonic hot-electron-painted Au@Pt NPs represent a novel and simple method for the design of advanced noble asymmetric metal nanomaterials.

Plasmonically enhanced electrochemistry boosted by nonaqueous solvent

Plasmon excitation of metal electrodes is known to enhance important energy related electrochemical transformations in aqueous media. However, the low solubility of nonpolar gases and molecular reagents involved in many energy conversion reactions limits the number of products formed per unit time in aqueous media. In this Communication, we use linear sweep voltammetry to measure how electrochemical H2O reduction in a nonaqueous solvent, acetonitrile, is enhanced by excitation of a plasmonic electrode. Plasmonically excited electrochemically roughened Au electrodes are found to produce photopotentials as large as 175 mV, which can be harnessed to lower the applied electrical bias required to drive the formation of H2. As the solvent polarity increases, by an increase in the concentration of H2O, the measured photopotential rapidly drops off to ∼50 mV. We propose a mechanism by which an increase in the H2O concentration increasingly stabilizes the photocharged plasmonic electrode, lowering the photopotential available to assist in the electrochemical reaction. Our study demonstrates that solvent polarity is an essential experimental parameter to optimize plasmonic enhancement in electrochemistry.

Plasmon-Assisted Ammonia Electrosynthesis

Ammonia is a promising liquid-phase carrier for the storage, transport, and deployment of carbon-free energy. However, the realization of an ammonia economy is predicated on the availability of green methods for the production of ammonia powered by electricity from renewable sources or by solar energy. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of ammonium from nitrate powered by a synergistic combination of electricity and light. We use an electrocatalyst composed of gold nanoparticles, which have dual attributes of electrochemical nitrate reduction activity and visible-light-harvesting ability due to their localized surface plasmon resonances. Plasmonic excitation of the electrocatalyst induces ammonium synthesis with up to a 15× boost in activity relative to conventional electrocatalysis. We devise a strategy to account for the effect of photothermal heating of the electrode surface, which allows the observed enhancement to be attributed to non-thermal effects such as energetic carriers and charged interfaces induced by plasmonic excitation. The synergy between electrochemical activation and plasmonic activation is the most optimal at a potential close to the onset of nitrate reduction. Plasmon-assisted electrochemistry presents an opportunity for conventional limits of electrocatalytic conversion to be surpassed due to non-equilibrium conditions generated by plasmonic excitation.

Localized surface plasmon resonance for enhanced electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis plays a vital role in energy conversion and storage in modern society. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a highly attractive approach to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity with solar energy. LSPR excitation can induce the transfer of hot electrons and holes, electromagnetic field enhancement, lattice heating, resonant energy transfer and scattering, in turn boosting a variety of electrocatalytic reactions. Although the LSPR-mediated electrocatalysis has been investigated, the underlying mechanism has not been well explained. Moreover, the efficiency is strongly dependent on the structure and composition of plasmonic metals. In this review, the currently proposed mechanisms for plasmon-mediated electrocatalysis are introduced and the preparation methods to design supported plasmonic nanostructures and related electrodes are summarized. In addition, we focus on the characterization strategies used for verifying and differentiating LSPR mechanisms involved at the electrochemical interface. Following that are highlights of representative examples of direct plasmonic metal-driven and indirect plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic reactions. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion on the remaining challenges and future opportunities for coupling LSPR with electrocatalysis.

Atomically Conformal Metal Laminations on Plasmonic Nanocrystals for Efficient Catalysis

Despite the enormous application potential, methods for conformal few-atomic-layer deposition on colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) are scarce. Similar to the process of lamination, we introduce a "confine and shine" strategy to homogeneously modify the different surface curvatures of plasmonic NCs with ultrathin conformal layers of diverse catalytic noble metals. This self-limited epitaxial skinlike metal growth harvests the localized surface plasmon resonance to induce reduction chemistry directly on the NC surface, confined inside hollow silica. This strategy avoids any kinetic anisotropic metal deposition. Unlike the conventional thick, anisotropic, and dendritic shells, which show severe nonradiative damping, the skinlike metal lamination preserves the key plasmonic properties of the core NCs. Consequently, the plasmonic-catalytic hybrid nanoreactors can carry out a variety of organic reactions with impressive rates.

Dual Active Center-Assembled Cu31S16-Co9-xNixS8 Heterodimers: Coherent Interface Engineering Induces Multihole Accumulation for Light-Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The design of low-cost yet highly efficient electrocatalysts plays a critical role in energy storage and conversion reactions. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a bottleneck of electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen fuel generation. It is still challenging to extract a high density of charge carriers in noble-metal-free alternative catalysts to facilitate sluggish kinetics. Herein, we report the rational design and coherent interface engineering for combining light-harvesting Cu₃₁S₁₆ with electroactive Co_9-xNi_xS₈ (x = 0-9) to form novel Cu₃₁S₁₆-Co_9-xNi_xS₈ heterodimers. By delicately controlling the kinetic growth in a seed-mediated growth method, the bifunctional centers, even with two distinct crystal phases, were integrated into a synergistic architecture, which achieved full-spectrum solar energy capture and light conversion to drive and activate the electrochemical reaction. Benefiting from the well-defined structure, high-quality interface, oriented attachment, and optimal Co/Ni bimetal ratio, Cu₃₁S₁₆-Co_7.2Ni_1.8S₈ produces a dramatically reduced overpotential (242 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) with a shift of 83 mV under visible-light excitation, achieving a 4.5-fold higher turnover frequency than that of its unirradiated Co_7.2Ni_1.8S₈ counterpart. This enhanced performance also far exceeds commercial RuO₂ (358 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) and most nonprecious-metal nanocatalysts. Further mechanistic studies reveal that coherent interface engineering leads to a strong photo/electricity coupling effect and efficient spatial charge separation, which induces sufficient hot holes that eventually accumulate at the electroactive sites to accelerate the multihole-involved OER. This work would open up new opportunities for the fabrication of non-noble metal electrocatalysts and management of charge carriers.

A highly activated iron phosphate over-layer for enhancing photoelectrochemical ammonia decomposition

Environmentally friendly ammonia (NH₃) decomposition has attracted a lot of interests in recent years to resolve the issue of water eutrophication from a wastewater and achieve a clean H₂ storage. Here, we report a novel strategy for solar-driven ammonia decomposition by introducing a highly-activated iron phosphate (FePi) over-layer on the surface of α-Fe₂O₃ nanorods photoanode (FePi/Fe₂O₃), and innovatively propose a photoelectrochemical (PEC) ammonia degradation system with enhanced performance. After a facile electrochemical (EC) activation, the FePi over-layer is converted into FeOOH. The EC-activated over-layer provides the efficient active sites for the ammonia adsorption process, which promotes the high catalytic kinetics for ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR). Due to the synergistic effect of the electrocatalytic and the photocatalytic process, the FePi/Fe₂O₃ exhibits the enhanced PEC AOR performance, which competes with water oxidation reaction (WOR). Comparing to the initial concentration of ammonia, the FePi/Fe₂O₃ achieves a 54.4% ammonia degradation rate within 3 h at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under 1 sun illumination, which demonstrates the reliable ammonia decomposition performance. This study confirms that it is feasible to achieve PEC ammonia decomposition in an aqueous solution without chloride mediators and provides a promising strategy for the harmless treatment of ammonia wastewater.

Plasmonic metal nanostructures: concepts, challenges and opportunities in photo-mediated chemical transformations

Plasmonic metal nanostructures (PMNs) are characterized by the plasmon oscillation of conduction band electron in response to external radiation, enabling strong light absorption and scattering capacities and near-field amplification. Owing to these enhanced light-matter interactions, PMNs have garnered extensive research interest in the past decades. Notably, a growingly large number of reports show that the energetics and kinetics of chemical transformations on PMNs can be modified upon photoexcitation of their plasmons, giving rise to a new paradigm of manipulating the reaction rate and selectivity of chemical reactions. On the other hand, there is urgent need to achieve clear understanding of the mechanism underlying the photo-mediated chemical transformations on PMNs for unleashing their full potential in converting solar energy to chemicals. In this perspective, we review current fundamental concepts of photo-mediated chemical transformations executed at PMNs. Three pivotal mechanistic questions, i.e., thermal and nonthermal effects, direct and indirect charge transfer processes, and the specific impacts of plasmon-induced potentials, are explored based on recent studies. We highlight the critical aspects in which major advancements should be made to facilitate the rational design and optimization of photo-mediated chemical transformations on PMNs in the future.

Light-Induced Voltages in Catalysis by Plasmonic Nanostructures

ConspectusPlasmonic nanostructures have garnered widescale scientific interest because of their strong light-matter interactions and the tunability of their absorption across the solar spectrum. At the heart of their superlative interaction with light is the resonant excitation of a collective oscillation of electrons in the nanostructure by the incident electromagnetic field. These resonant oscillations are known as localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). In recent years, the community has uncovered intriguing photochemical attributes of noble metal nanostructures arising from their LSPRs. Chemical reactions that are otherwise unfavorable or sluggish in the dark are induced on the nanostructure surface upon photoexcitation of LSPRs. This phenomenon has led to the birth of plasmonic catalysis. The rates of a variety of kinetically challenging reactions are enhanced by plasmon-excited nanostructures. While the potential utility for solar energy harvesting and chemical production is clear, there is a natural curiosity about the precise origin(s) of plasmonic catalysis. One explanation is that the reactions are facilitated by the action of the intensely concentrated and confined electric fields generated on the nanostructure upon LSPR excitation. Another mechanism of activation involves hot carriers transiently produced in the metal nanostructure by damping of LSPRs.In this Account, we visit a phenomenon that has received less attention but has a key role to play in plasmonic catalysis and chemistry. Under common chemical scenarios, plasmonic excitation induces a potential or a voltage on a nanoparticle. This photopotential modifies the energetics of a chemical reaction on noble metal nanoparticles. In a range of cases studied by our laboratory and others, light-induced potentials underlie the plasmonic enhancement of reaction kinetics. The photopotential model does not replace other known mechanisms, but it complements them. There are multiple ways in which an electrostatic photopotential is produced by LSPR excitation, such as optical rectification, but one that is most relevant in chemical media is asymmetric charge transfer to solution-phase acceptors. Electrons and holes produced in a nanostructure by damping of LSPRs are not removed at the same rate. As a result, the slower carrier accumulates on the nanostructure, and a steady-state charge is built up on the nanostructure, leading to a photopotential. Potentials of up to a few hundred millivolts have been measured by our laboratory and others. A photocharged nanoparticle is a source of carriers of a higher potential than an uncharged one. As a result, redox chemical reactions on noble metal nanoparticles exhibit lower activation barriers under photoexcitation. In electrochemical reactions on noble metal nanoparticles, the photopotential supplements the applied potential. In a diverse set of reactions, the photopotential model explains the photoenhancement of rates as well as the trends as a function of light intensity and photon energy. With further gains, light-induced potentials may be used as a knob for controlling the activities and selectivities of noble metal nanoparticle catalysts.
