Assembly-Induced Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Spirocyclic Chiral Silver(I) Clusters

Handedness-Inverted and Stimuli-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nano/Micromaterials Through Pathway-Dependent Chiral Supramolecular Polymorphism

The precise manipulation of supramolecular polymorphs has been widely applied to control the morphologies and functions of self-assemblies, but is rarely utilized for the fabrication of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with tailored properties. Here, this work reports that an amphiphilic naphthalene-histidine compound (NIHis) readily self-assembled into distinct chiral nanostructures through pathway-dependent supramolecular polymorphism, which shows opposite and multistimuli responsive CPL signals. Specifically, NIHis display assembly-induced CPL from the polymorphic keto tautomer, which become predominant during enol-keto tautomerization shifting controlled by a bulk solvent effect. Interestingly, chiral polymorphs of nanofiber and microbelt with inverted CPL signals can be prepared from the same NIHis monomer in exactly the same solvent compositions and concentrations by only changing the temperature. The tunable CPL performance of the solid microbelts is realized under multi external physical or chemical stimuli including grinding, acid fuming, and heating. In particular, an emission color and CPL on-off switch based on the microbelt polymorph by reversible heating-cooling protocol is developed. This work brings a new approach for developing smart CPL materials via supramolecular polymorphism engineering.

BINOL-Based Chiral Macrocycles and Cages

Chirality, a fundamental principle in chemistry, biology, and medicine, is prevalent in nature and in organisms. Chiral molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, are crucial in biomolecular synthesis, as well as in the development of functional materials. Among these, 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (BINOL) stands out for its stable chiral configuration, versatile functionality, and commercial availability. BINOL is widely employed in asymmetric catalysis and chiral materials. This review mainly focuses on recent research over the past five years concerning the use of BINOL derivatives for constructing chiral macrocycles and cages. Their contributions to chiral luminescence, enantiomeric separation, transmembrane transport, and asymmetric catalysis were examined.

Chiral Ligand-Concentration Mediating Asymmetric Transformations of Silver Nanoclusters: NIR-II Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence Lighting

Near infrared (NIR) emitter with circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP), known as NIR CPP, has emerged as a key part in the research of cutting-edge luminescent materials. However, it remains a challenge to obtain nanoclusters with NIR CPP activity. Here, we propose an asymmetric transformation approach to efficiently synthesize two pairs of chiral silver nanoclusters (R/S-Ag29 and R/S-Ag16) using an achiral Ag10 nanocluster as starting material in the presence of different concentration chiral inducer (R/S)-1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogenphosphate (R/S-BNP). R/S-Ag29, formed in the low-concentration R/S-BNP, exhibits a unique kernel-shell structure consisting of a distorted Ag13 icosahedron and an integrated cage-like organometallic shell with a C3 symmetry, and possesses a superatomic 6-electron configuration (1S2|1P4). By contrast, R/S-Ag16, formed in the high-concentration R/S-BNP, features a sandwich-like pentagram with AgI-pure kernel. Profiting from the hierarchically chiral structures and superatomic kernel-dominated phosphorescence, R/S-Ag29 exhibits infrequent CPP activity in the second near-infrared (975 nm) region, being the first instance of NIR-II CPP observed among CPL-active metal nanoclusters. This study presents a new approach to reduce the difficulty of de novo synthesis for chiral silver nanomaterials, and facilitates the design of CPP-active superatomic nanoclusters in NIR region.

Atomically Precise Chiral Metal Nanoclusters for Circularly Polarized Light Detection

Circularly polarized light (CPL) detection is of great significance in various applications such as drug identification, sensing and imaging. Atomically precise chiral metal nanoclusters with intense circular dichroism (CD) signals are promising candidates for CPL detection, which can further facilitate device miniaturization and integration. Herein, we report the preparation of a pair of optically active chiral silver nanoclusters [Ag7(R/S-DMA)2(dpppy)3] (BF4)3 (R/S-Ag7) for direct CPL detection. The crystal structure and molecular formula of R/S-Ag7 clusters are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and high-resolution mass spectrometry. R/S-Ag7 clusters exhibit strong CD spectra and CPL both in solution and solid states. When used as the photoactive materials in photodetectors, R/S-Ag7 enables effective discrimination between left-handed circularly polarized and right-handed circularly polarized light at 520 nm with short response time, high responsivity and considerable discrimination ratio. This study is the first report on using atomically precise chiral metal nanoclusters for CPL detection.

Metal Clusters Confined in Chiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework for Circularly Polarized-Luminescence Inks

Chiroptical activities arising in nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as one of the most dynamic areas of modern science. However, devising an overarching strategy that is capable of concurrently enhancing the photoluminescence (PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of metal NCs remains a formidable challenge. Herein, gold and silver nanoclusters (AuNCs, AgNCs) are endowed with CPL, for the first time, through a universal host-guest approach─centered around perturbing a chiral microenvironment within chiral hosts, simultaneously enhancing emissions. Remarkably, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of AuNCs has undergone an increase of over 200 times upon confinement, escalating from 0.05% to 12%, and demonstrates a CPL response. Moreover, a three-dimensional (3D) model termed "NCs@CMOF" featuring CPL activity is created using metal cluster-based assembly inks through the process of 3D printing. This work introduces a potentially straightforward and versatile approach for achieving both PL enhancement and CPL activities in metal clusters.

Kinetically Controlled Structural Modulation of the Self-Assembled Silver Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomic precision are growing into a fascinating class of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry. What makes it more interesting is the enhanced optical properties of the ordered structures, including aggregation-induced emission (AIE). However, algorithm dictating the self-assembly of metal NCs in multicomponent environment remains largely unknown, and effective means to manipulate the self-assembly is still lacking, especially under kinetic control. Herein, nanofibers which contain sub-1 nm nanowires and exhibit circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are obtained from crystallization-induced self-assembly (CISA) of water-soluble, negatively charged silver NCs (Ag9 -NCs) in the presence of glutamic acid (Glu). By the introduction of a positively-charged additive (choline chloride, CC), the structure of the nanowires is modulated and the lateral interaction between adjacent nanofibers is adjusted, leading to simultaneous improvement of the phosphorescence and chirality which finally enhances CPP. Importantly, changing the time at which CC is introduced altered the kinetic pathway of the CISA, which enables to effectively manipulate both the final structures of the self-assembled Ag9 -NCs and the output of the optical signals.

Three in One: Three Different Molybdates Trapped in a Thiacalix[4]arene Protected Ag72 Nanocluster for Structural Transformation and Photothermal Conversion

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent crucial intermediates in the formation of insoluble metal oxides from soluble metal ions, however, the rapid hydrolysis-condensation kinetics of MoVI or WVI makes the direct characterization of coexisted molecular species in a given medium extremely difficult. Silver nanoclusters have shown versatile capacity to encapsulate diverse POMs, which provides an alternative scene to appreciate landscape of POMs in atomic precision. Here, we report a thiacalix[4]arene protected silver nanocluster (Ag72b) that simultaneously encapsulates three kinds of molybdates (MoO4 2- , Mo6 O22 8- and Mo7 O25 8- ) in situ transformed from classic Lindqvist Mo6 O19 2- , providing more deep understanding on the structural diversity and condensation growth route of POMs in solution. Ag72b is the first silver nanocluster trapping so many kinds of molybdates, which in turn exert collective template effect to aggregate silver atoms into a nanocluster. The post-reaction of Ag72b with AgOAc or PhCOOAg produces a discrete Ag24 nanocluster (Ag24a) or an Ag28 nanocluster based 1D chain structure (Ag28a), respectively. Moreover, the post-synthesized Ag28a can be utilized as potential ignition material for further application. This work not only provides an important model for unlocking dynamic features of POMs at atom-precise level but also pioneers a promising approach to synthesize silver nanoclusters from known to unknown.

Enhancing the Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Europium Coordination Polymers by Doping a Chromophore Ligand into Superhelices

Lanthanide-based molecular materials showing efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity with a high quantum yield are attractive due to their potential applications in data storage, optical sensors, and 3D displays. Herein we present an innovative method to achieve enhanced CPL activity and a high quantum yield by doping a chromophore ligand into a coordination polymer superhelix. A series of homochiral europium(III) phosphonates with a helical morphology were prepared with the molecular formula S-, R-[Eu(cyampH)3-3n(nempH)3n]·3H2O (S/R-Eu-n, n = 0-5%). The doping of chromophore ligand S- or R-nempH2 into superhelices of S/R-Eu-0% not only turned on the CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor |glum| on the order of 10-3 but also increased the quantum yield by about 14-fold. This work may shed light on the development of efficient CPL-active lanthanide-based coordination polymers for applications.

Hyperconjugative Aromaticity-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescence Enhancement in Polyaurated Heterocycles

Hyperconjugative aromaticity (HA) frequently appears in metalla-aromatics, but its effect on photophysical properties remains unexplored to date. Herein, we reveal two different HA scenarios in nearly isostructural triaurated indolium and benzofuranylium compounds. The biased HAs show a discernible effect on the spatial arrangement of metal atoms and thus tailor metal parentage in frontier orbitals and the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Theoretical calculations and structural analyses demonstrate that HA not only influences the degree of electron delocalization over the trimetalated aromatic rings but also affects π-coordination of Au(I) and intercluster aurophilic interaction. Consequently, the triaurated benzofuranylium complex shows better photoluminescence performance (quantum yield up to 49.7%) over the indolium analogue. Furthermore, four pairs of axially chiral bibenzofuran-centered trinuclear and hexanuclear gold clusters were purposefully synthesized to correlate their HA-involved structures with the chiroptical response. The triaurated benzofuranylium complexes exhibit strong circular dichroism (CD) response in solution but CPL silence even in solid film. In contrast, the hexa-aurated homologues display strong CD and intense CPL signals in both aggregated state and solid film (luminescence anisotropy factor glum up to 10-3). Their amplified chiroptical response is finally ascribed to the dominant intermolecular exciton couplings of large assemblies formed through the HA-tailored aggregation of hexanuclear compounds.

Chiral Hydride Cu18 Clusters Transform to Superatomic Cu15Ag4 Clusters: Circularly Polarized Luminescence Lighting

The manipulation of metal cluster enantiomers and their reconstruction remain challenging. Here, for the first time, we report an enantiomeric pair of hydride copper clusters [Cu18H(R/S-PEA)12](BF4)5 (R/S-Cu18H) made using designed chiral ligands. By manipulation of R/S-Cu18H with Ag+ ions, H- ions are released, leading to the reconstruction of 15 Cu atoms. Moreover, 4 Ag atoms replaced Cu atoms at the specific sites, resulting in the formation of homochiral [Cu15Ag4(R/S-PEA)12](BF4)5 (R/S-Cu15Ag4) with an isomorphic metal skeleton. This process was accompanied by a reduction reaction generating two free valence elections in the chiral alloying counterparts, which displayed orange emission. The solid-state R/S-Cu15Ag4 exhibited a photoluminescence quantum yield of 7.02% and excellent circularly polarized luminescence. The chiral transformations were resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The development of chiral copper hydride precursor-based metal clusters with chiroptical activities holds tremendous promise for advancing the field of optoelectronics and enabling new applications in lighting, displays, and beyond.

Bright circularly polarized photoluminescence in chiral layered hybrid lead-halide perovskites

Hybrid perovskite semiconductor materials are predicted to lock chirality into place and encode asymmetry into their electronic states, while softness of their crystal lattice accommodates lattice strain to maintain high crystal quality with low defect densities, necessary for high luminescence yields. We report photoluminescence quantum efficiencies as high as 39% and degrees of circularly polarized photoluminescence of up to 52%, at room temperature, in the chiral layered hybrid lead-halide perovskites (R/S/Rac)-3BrMBA2PbI4 [3BrMBA = 1-(3-bromphenyl)-ethylamine]. Using transient chiroptical spectroscopy, we explain the excellent photoluminescence yields from suppression of nonradiative loss channels and high rates of radiative recombination. We further find that photoexcitations show polarization lifetimes that exceed the time scales of radiative decays, which rationalize the high degrees of polarized luminescence. Our findings pave the way toward high-performance solution-processed photonic systems for chiroptical applications and chiral-spintronic logic at room temperature.

Recent developments in the investigation of driving forces for transforming coinage metal nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters serve as an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. The transformation of metal nanoclusters has been fully reflected in their studies from every aspect, including the structural evolution analysis, physicochemical property regulation, and practical application promotion. In this review, we highlight the driving forces for transforming atomically precise metal nanoclusters and summarize the related transforming principles and fundamentals. Several driving forces for transforming nanoclusters are meticulously reviewed herein: ligand-exchange-induced transformations, metal-exchange-induced transformations, intercluster reactions, photochemical transformations, oxidation/reduction-induced transformations, and other factors (intrinsic instability, pH, temperature, and metal salts) triggering transformations. The exploitation of transforming principles to customize the preparations, structures, physicochemical properties, and practical applications of metal nanoclusters is also disclosed. At the end of this review, we provide our perspectives and highlight the challenges remaining for future research on the transformation of metal nanoclusters. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in metal nanoclusters, and we believe that this review will provide researchers with a comprehensive synthetic toolbox and insights on the research fundamentals needed to realize more cluster-based nanomaterials with customized compositions, structures, and properties.

A wearable gloved sensor based on fluorescent Ag nanoparticles and europium complexes for visualized assessment of tetracycline in food samples

The abuse of tetracycline antibiotics leads to accumulating residues in the human body, seriously affecting human health. Establishing a sensitive, efficient, and reliable method for qualitative and quantitative detection of tetracycline (TC) is necessary. This study integrated silver nanoclusters and europium-based materials into the same nano-detection system to construct a visual and rapid TC sensor with rich fluorescence color changes. The nanosensor has the advantages of a low detection limit (10.5 nM), high detection sensitivity, fast response, and wide linear range (0-30 μM), which can meet the analysis requirements of different types of food samples. In addition, portable devices based on paper and gloves were designed. Through the smartphone's chromaticity acquisition and calculation analysis application (APP), the real-time rapid visual intelligent analysis of TC in the sample can be realized, which guides the intelligent application of multicolor fluorescent nanosensors.

Multicolor Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Inorganic Crystalline Nanostructures Induced by Atomic Chirality

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is well-studied in molecular systems but has been rarely reported in pure inorganic nanoscale crystals. Herein, we develop a family of pure inorganic rare-earth nanowires with robust and color-tunable CPL emissions. The chiral rare earth nanowires possess intrinsic atomic chirality with controlled handedness that is guided by the enantiomers with molecular chirality in the synthesis. By varying luminescent ions incorporated in the crystal lattice, color-tunable CPL can be achieved and is thermally robust, preserving emission over 300 °C, distinct from existing CPL-active materials. Moreover, as a proof of concept, we demonstrate that the synthesized nanostructures can be easily dispersed in a polymer matrix to enable transparent and flexible CPL films. This study opens up a promising avenue to design robust and tunable CPL materials helpful to the understanding of inorganic chiral information and capable of further applications in novel optoelectronic devices.

Stepwise Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Metal Cluster Ensembles

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are usually endowed by chiral linkers and/or guests. The strategy using chiral secondary building units in MOFs for solving the trade-off of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and high dissymmetry factors (|g_lum |) has not been demonstrated. This work directionally assembles predesigned chiral silver clusters with ACQ linkers through reticular chemistry. The nanoscale chirality of the cluster transmits through MOF's framework, where the linkers are arranged in a quasi-parallel manner and are efficiently isolated and rigidified. Consequently, this backbone of chiral cluster-based MOFs demonstrates superb CPL, high PLQYs of 50.3%, and |g_lum | of 1.2 × 10^-2 . Crystallographic analyses and DFT calculations show the quasi-parallel arrangement manners of emitting linkers leading to a large angle between the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments, boosting CPL response. As compared, an ion-pair-direct assembly without interactions between linkers induces one-ninth |g_lum | and one-sixth PLQY values, further highlighting the merits of directional arrangement in reticular nets. In addition, a prototype CPL switching fabricated by a chiral framework is controlled through alternating ultraviolet and visible light. This work is expected to inspire the development of reticular chemistry for high-performance chiroptical materials.

A stable superatomic Cu6(SMPP)6 nanocluster with dual emission

We have synthesized single crystals of a highly stable Cu₆ nanocluster protected by six ligands of 2-mercapto-5-n-propylpyrimidine (SMPP). This Cu₆(SMPP)₆ cluster has a quasi-octahedral superatomic Cu₆ core, with the Cu atoms being protected by both -S- and N-bidentate coordination of the SMPP ligands. Interestingly, each Cu atom is linked with an N atom, while the two neighboring Cu atoms on the same triangular facet are linked by the -S- bridge of the ligand. Single-crystal parsing results show that the altered orientation of the SMPP ligands give rise to three packing modes (named as 1, 2, and 3) of the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ NCs. Apart from the well-organized coordination, this Cu₆(SMPP)₆ nanocluster exhibits superatomic stability with a metallic core of 4 valence electrons (1S²2S²||3S²), enabling to largely balance the interactions between the polynuclear core and delocalized electrons. Interestingly, the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ NCs display dual emissions in both ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and near-infrared (NIR) regions. First-principles calculations well reproduce the experimental spectrum, shedding light on the nature of excitation states and metal-ligand interactions in the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ cluster.

Plasmonic Chiral Metasurface-Induced Upconverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Achiral Upconversion Nanoparticles

Chirality induction, transfer, and manipulation have aroused great interest in achiral nanomaterials. Here, we demonstrate strong upconverted circularly polarized luminescence from achiral core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) via a plasmonic chiral metasurface-induced optical chirality transfer. The Yb³⁺-sensitized core-shell UCNPs with good dispersity exhibit intense upconversion luminescence of Tm³⁺ and Nd³⁺ through the energy transfer process. By spin-coating the core-shell UCNPs on this chiral metasurface, strong enhancement and circular polarization modulation of upconversion luminescence can be achieved due to resonant coupling between surface plasmons and upconversion nanoparticles. In the UCNPs-on-metasurface composite, a significant upconversion luminescence enhancement can be achieved with a maximum enhancement factor of 32.63 at 878 nm and an overall enhancement factor of 11.61. The luminescence dissymmetry factor of the induced upconverted circularly polarized luminescence can reach 0.95 at the emission wavelength of 895 nm. The UCNPs-on-metasurface composite yields efficient modulation for the emission intensity and polarization of UCNPs, paving new pathways to many potential applications in imaging, sensing, and anticounterfeiting fields.

Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence via Chirality Induction and Energy Transfer from Organic Films to Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) films with high dissymmetry factors hold great potential for optoelectronic applications. Herein, we propose a strategy for achieving strongly dissymetric CPL in nanocomposite films based on chirality induction and energy transfer to semiconductor nanocrystals. First, focusing on a purely organic system, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and CPL activity of organic liquid crystals (LCs) forming helical nanofilaments was detected, featuring green emission with high dissymmetry factors g_lum ∼ 10^-2. The handedness of helical filaments, and thus the sign of CPL, was controlled via minute amounts of a small chiral organic dopant. Second, nanocomposite films were fabricated by incorporating InP/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) into the LC matrix, which induced the chiral assembly of QDs and endowed them with chiroptical properties. Due to the spectral matching of the components, energy transfer (ET) from LC to QDs was possible enabling a convenient way of tuning CPL wavelengths by varying the LC/QD ratio. As obtained, composite films exhibited absolute g_lum values up to ∼10^-2 and thermally on/off switchable luminescence. Overall, we demonstrate the induction of chiroptical properties by the assembly of nonchiral building QDs on the chiral organic template and energy transfer from organic films to QDs, representing a simple and versatile approach to tune the CPL activity of organic materials.

Robust Enantiomeric Two-Dimensional Assembly of Atomically Precise Silver Clusters

The facile syntheses of enantiomeric atomically precise silver clusters starting from achiral ligands remain a substantial challenge to explore. In this work, a pair of atomically precise enantiomers of R/S-[Ag₁₇Cl(ⁱPrS)₉S(CH₃COO)₅H₂O] (R/S-Ag₁₇, ⁱPrS = isopropanethiolate) clusters have been synthesized using a viable solvothermal approach. The chirality of the resulting enantiomeric R/S-Ag₁₇ clusters is attributed to the asymmetric arrangement of surface achiral ligands. Both R/S-Ag₁₇ enantiomers could form the two-dimensional (2D) assemblies via intercluster interactions of basic building blocks containing Ag₁₆S₈ moieties, ⁱPrS-Ag motifs, and S^2- linkers. Such a small ligand-induced 2D assembly greatly contributes to the enhancement of thermal stability and photocatalytic activity of R/S-Ag₁₇ clusters, providing possibilities for exploring robust coinage cluster-based assembly with attractive catalytic properties.

Structural Control and Chiroptical Response in Intrinsically Tetra- and Pentanuclear Chiral Gold Clusters

Controlling the synthesis of chiral metal clusters in the aspects of nuclearity number, metal-metal interaction, and spatial arrangement of metal atoms is crucial for establishing the correlation of detailed structural factors with chiroptical activity. Herein, a series of enantiopure gold complexes with nuclearity numbers ranging from 2 to 5 were constructed and structurally characterized. On the basis of the annulation reaction between two aurated μ₂-imido nucleophilic units with various aldehydes, we finely adjusted the metal-metal interaction and torsion angles of a characteristic tetranuclear metal cluster by introducing different substituents into the resulting imidazolidine dianionic chiral skeleton. Further structural investigations, contrast experiments, and time-dependent density functional theory calculations confirmed that the chiroptical response of the acquired asymmetric metal clusters was mainly affected by the geometrically twisted arrangement of metal atoms. Finally, the tetranuclear gold cluster compound with the shortest intermetallic interaction and the largest torsion angle of a Au₄ core showed the highest absorption anisotropy factor up to 2.2 × 10^-3. In addition, the correlation of structural factors with the stability of chiral gold clusters was thoroughly evaluated by monitoring the CD, UV-vis, and NMR spectra at elevated temperatures. Insight into the relationship between the structural factors with the chiroptical property and stability of chiral gold clusters in this work will help us to design and achieve more stable chiral metal clusters and stimulate their practical applications in chiroptical functional materials.

Controllable spontaneous resolution in ultrasmall Cu-Ag bimetallic cluster ion pairs from achiral components

Bimetallic cluster ion pairs containing a quaternary phosphonium and an ultrasmall Cu₂Ag₃ anionic cluster protected by thiolates: (PPh₃R'')[Cu₂Ag₃(SR')₆] (R'SH = cyclohexylthiol (CySH), R'' = Ph, 1; Me, 2; Et, 3; Pr, 4; R'SH = tert-butylthiol (^tBuSH) and R'' = Ph, 5) were reported. Without any chiral source, 1 crystallizes as conglomerate crystals with homochiral packings and spontaneous resolution occurs, while four other clusters 2-5 crystallize as racemic crystals with heterochiral packings. These results indicate that racemic and homochiral crystallization in the cluster system could be controlled through fine-tuning internal achiral structural components.

Self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures

Controlled assembly of inorganic nanoparticles with different compositions, sizes and shapes into higher-order structures of collective functionalities is a central pursued objective in chemistry, physics, materials science and nanotechnology. The emerging chiral superstructures, which break spatial symmetries at the nanoscale, have attracted particular attention, owing to their unique chiroptical properties and potential applications in optics, catalysis, biology and so on. Various bottom-up strategies have been developed to build inorganic chiral superstructures based on the intrinsic configurational preference of the building blocks, external fields or chiral templates. Self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures have demonstrated significant superior optical activity from the strong electric/magnetic coupling between the building blocks, as compared with the organic counterparts. In this Review, we discuss recent progress in preparing self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures, with an emphasis on the driving forces that enable symmetry breaking during the assembly process. The chiroptical properties and applications are highlighted and a forward-looking trajectory of where research efforts should be focused is discussed.

Fabrication of a chiral luminescent hydrogel from gold nanoclusters via molecular recognition

A novel supramolecular chiral hydrogel with enhanced emission was obtained by the co-assembly of achiral thiobarbituric acid-modified gold nanoclusters (TBA-AuNCs) with chiral histidine molecules. Chirality transfer from histidine to the supramolecular hydrogels was achieved through the π-π stacking and intermolecular H-bonding based on molecular recognition. This work gives a creative strategy for the building of chiral nanocluster-based materials.

Generating circularly polarized luminescence from clusterization-triggered emission using solid phase molecular self-assembly

Purely-organic clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) has displayed promising abilities in bioimaging, chemical sensing, and multicolor luminescence. However, it remains absent in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) due to the difficulties in well-aligning the nonconventional luminogens. We report a case of CPL generated with CTE using the solid phase molecular self-assembly (SPMSA) of poly-L-lysine (PLL) and oleate ion (OL), that is, the macroscopic CPL supramolecular film self-assembled by the electrostatic complex of PLL/OL under mechanical pressure. Well-defined interface charge distribution, given by lamellar mesophases of OL ions, forces the PLL chains to fold regularly as a requirement of optimal electrostatic interactions. Further facilitated by hydrogen bonding, the through-space conjugation (TSC) of orderly aligned electron-rich O and N atoms leads to CTE-based CPL, which is capable of transferring energy to an acceptor via a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, making it possible to develop environmentally friendly and economic CPL from sustainable and renewable materials.

Photoluminescence enhancement by controllable aggregation and polymerization of octanuclear gold clusters

Aggregation-induced luminescence behaviors of polynuclear metal clusters are intriguing but still mysterious to date. Herein, we synthesize a series of Au8 clusters with different peripheral ligands to investigate their different supramolecular assembly and distinguishable aggregation-induced luminescent behaviors in solution upon the variation of concentration and solvent polarity. Complex 1a is surrounded by two tetraphenyl ethylene (TPE) moieties, whose dense stacking engenders strong aggregation in solution. Furthermore, the incorporation of the TPE-decorated gold clusters into a polymer backbone promotes molecular restriction within a constrained polymer micelle and thus facilitates efficient emission enhancement of gold clusters. In contrast, the other two gold clusters with small ethynylbenzene and chloride as peripheral ligands exhibit low emission efficiency. The contrastive study showcases how the peripheral ligand arrangements influence assemblies of metal clusters and potentiates such effects in the rational design of cluster-based luminescent materials.

Alkynyl-Stabilized Superatomic Silver Clusters Showing Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We report a new enantiomeric pair of superatomic silver clusters, R/S-Ag₁₇, prepared from chiral alkynyl ligands. R-Ag₁₇ and S-Ag₁₇ possess C₃ symmetry and emit near-infrared (NIR) light with a quantum yield (QY) of 8.0% under ambient condition as well as NIR circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as a result of the chirality of the excited states. Both experiments and theoretical calculations indicate for the first time that the CPL originates from transitions between superatomic 1P_z (along the C₃ axis) and 1S orbitals. This work opens a new avenue for CPL-active metal nanoclusters by utilizing chiral alkynyl ligands and enlightens the chirality transfer from chiral protecting ligands to superatomic states in metal clusters.

Small Figure-Eight Luminophores: Double-Twisted Tethered Cyclic Binaphthyls Boost Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Double-twisted cyclic binaphthyls, in which two naphthalenes are tethered by -O(CH₂ )_n O- linkage (n=1-3), have been synthesized. X-ray analyses and DFT calculations revealed a tightly constrained stereogenic figure-eight geometry. Tethering of two naphthalenes by short linkage forces a small dihedral angle, and the cyclic binaphthyls with short tether (n=1, 2) exhibit remarkable boosting of the g_lum value (1.0-1.6×10^-2 ) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and unusual g_lum /g_abs ratios (0.93-1.3). These experimental high |g_lum | values are in accord with the results of excited state TD-DFT calculations, which show transannular interactions and that consequent extensive delocalization occurs throughout the figure-eight π-core. As a result, the present figure-eight luminophore promote the elongation of the magnetic transition dipole moment that results in significant increases in g_lum values.
