Aluminum Molecular Ring Meets Deep Eutectic Solvents: Adaptive Assembly and Optical Behavior

Different from the previous neutral reaction solvent system, this work explores the synthesis of Al-oxo rings in ionic environments. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) formed by quaternary ammonium salts hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and phenols hydrogen bond donor (HBD) further reduce the melting point of the reaction system and provide an ionic environment. Further, the quaternary ammonium salt was chosen as the HBA because it contains a halogen anion that matches the size of the central cavity of the molecular ring. Based on this thought, five Al8 ion pair cocrystals were synthesized via "DES thermal". The general formula is Q+ ⊂ {Cl@[Al8(BD)8(μ2-OH)4L12]} (AlOC-180-AlOC-185, Q+ = tetrabutylammonium, tetrapropylammonium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole; HBD = phenol, p-chlorophenol, p-fluorophenol; HL = benzoic acid, 1-naphthoic acid, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, anthracene-9-carboxylic acid). Structural studies reveal that the phenol-coordinated Al molecular ring and the quaternary ammonium ion pair form the cocrystal compounds. The halogen anions in the DES component are confined in the center of the molecular ring, and the quaternary ammonium cations are located in the organic shell. Such an adaptive cocrystal binding pattern is particularly evident in the structures coordinated with low-symmetry ligands such as naphthoic acid and pyrene acid. Finally, the optical behavior of these cocrystal compounds is understood from the analysis of crystal structure and theoretical calculation.

Precise Modulation of CO2 Sorption in Ti8Ce2-Oxo Clusters: Elucidating Lewis Acidity of the Ce Metal Sites and Structural Flexibility

Investigating the structure-property correlation in porous materials is a fundamental and consistent focus in various scientific domains, especially within sorption research. Metal oxide clusters with capping ligands, characterized by intrinsic cavities formed through specific solid-state packing, demonstrate significant potential as versatile platforms for sorption investigations due to their precisely tunable atomic structures and inherent long-range order. This study presents a series of Ti8Ce2-oxo clusters with subtle variations in coordinated linkers and explores their sorption behavior. Notably, Ti8Ce2-BA (BA denotes benzoic acid) manifests a distinctive two-step profile during the CO2 adsorption, accompanied by a hysteresis loop. This observation marks a new instance within the metal oxide cluster field. Of intrigue, the presence of unsaturated Ce(IV) sites was found to be correlated with the stepped sorption property. Moreover, the introduction of an electrophilic fluorine atom, positioned ortho or para to the benzoic acid, facilitated precise control over gate pressure and stepped sorption quantities. Advanced in situ techniques systematically unraveled the underlying mechanism behind this unique sorption behavior. The findings elucidate that robust Lewis base-acid interactions are established between the CO2 molecules and Ce ions, consequently altering the conformation of coordinated linkers. Conversely, the F atoms primarily contribute to gate pressure variation by influencing the Lewis acidity of the Ce sites. This research advances the understanding in fabricating metal-oxo clusters with structural flexibility and provides profound insights into their host-guest interaction motifs. These insights hold substantial promise across diverse fields and offer valuable guidance for future adsorbent designs grounded in fundamental theories of structure-property relationships.

Pertechnetate/perrhenate-capped Zr/Hf-Dihydroxide Dimers: Elucidating Zr-TcO4 Co-Mobility in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Spent nuclear fuel contains heavy element fission products that must be separated for effective reprocessing for a safe and sustainable nuclear fuel cycle. 93 Zr and 99 Tc are high-yield fission products that co-transport in liquid-liquid extraction processes. Here we seek atomic-level information of this co-extraction process, as well as fundamental knowledge about ZrIV (and HfIV ) aqueous speciation in the presence of topology-directing ligands such as pertechnetate (TcO4 - ) and non-radioactive surrogate perrhenate (ReO4 - ). In this context, we show that the flat tetrameric oxyhydroxyl-cluster [MIV 4 (OH)8 (H2 O)16 ]8+ (and related polymers) is dissociated by perrhenate/pertechnetate to yield isostructural dimers, M2 (OH)2 (XO4 - )6 (H2 O)6  ⋅ 3H2 O (M=Zr/HfIV ; X=Re/TcVII ), elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We used these model compounds to understand the pervasive 93 Zr-99 Tc coextraction with further speciation studies in water, nitric acid, and tetrabutylphosphate (TBP) -kerosene; where the latter two media are relevant to nuclear fuel reprocessing. SAXS (small angle X-ray scattering), compositional evaluation, and where experimentally feasible, ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) showed that perrhenate/pertechnetate influence Zr/HfIV -speciation in water. In Zr-XO4 solvent extraction studies to simulate fuel reprocessing, we provide evidence that TcO4 - enhances extraction of ZrIV , and compositional analysis of the extracted metal-complexes (Zr-ReO4 study) is consistent with the crystallized ZrIV 2 (OH)2 (ReVII O4 - )6 (H2 O)6 ⋅dimer.

Spatiotemporal Studies of Soluble Inorganic Nanostructures with X-rays and Neutrons

This Review addresses the use of X-ray and neutron scattering as well as X-ray absorption to describe how inorganic nanostructured materials assemble, evolve, and function in solution. We first provide an overview of techniques and instrumentation (both large user facilities and benchtop). We review recent studies of soluble inorganic nanostructure assembly, covering the disciplines of materials synthesis, processes in nature, nuclear materials, and the widely applicable fundamental processes of hydrophobic interactions and ion pairing. Reviewed studies cover size regimes and length scales ranging from sub-Ångström (coordination chemistry and ion pairing) to several nanometers (molecular clusters, i.e. polyoxometalates, polyoxocations, and metal-organic polyhedra), to the mesoscale (supramolecular assembly processes). Reviewed studies predominantly exploit 1) SAXS/WAXS/SANS (small- and wide-angle X-ray or neutron scattering), 2) PDF (pair-distribution function analysis of X-ray total scattering), and 3) XANES and EXAFS (X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure, respectively). While the scattering techniques provide structural information, X-ray absorption yields the oxidation state in addition to the local coordination. Our goal for this Review is to provide information and inspiration for the inorganic/materials science communities that may benefit from elucidating the role of solution speciation in natural and synthetic processes.

Reactivity of metal-oxo clusters towards biomolecules: from discrete polyoxometalates to metal-organic frameworks

Metal-oxo clusters hold great potential in several fields such as catalysis, materials science, energy storage, medicine, and biotechnology. These nanoclusters of transition metals with oxygen-based ligands have also shown promising reactivity towards several classes of biomolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, nucleotides, sugars, and lipids. This reactivity can be leveraged to address some of the most pressing challenges we face today, from fighting various diseases, such as cancer and viral infections, to the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. For instance, metal-oxo clusters and related materials have been shown to be effective catalysts for biomass conversion into renewable fuels and platform chemicals. Furthermore, their reactivity towards biomolecules has also attracted interest in the development of inorganic drugs and bioanalytical tools. Additionally, the structural versatility of metal-oxo clusters allows for the efficiency and selectivity of the biomolecular reactions they promote to be readily tuned, thereby providing a pathway towards reaction optimization. The properties of the catalyst can also be improved through incorporation into solid supports or by linking metal-oxo clusters together to form Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), which have been demonstrated to be powerful heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of the state of the art on biomolecular transformations promoted by metal-oxo clusters and their applications, with a particular focus on structure-activity relationships.

Atomically accurate site-specific ligand tailoring of highly acid- and alkali-resistant Ti(iv)-based metallamacrocycle for enhanced CO2 photoreduction

Skillfully engineering surface ligands at specific sites within robust clusters presents both a formidable challenge and a captivating opportunity. Herein we unveil an unprecedented titanium-oxo cluster: a calix[8]arene-stabilized metallamacrocycle (Ti16L4), uniquely crafted through the fusion of four "core-shell" {Ti4@(TBC[8])(L)} subunits with four oxalate moieties. Notably, this cluster showcases an exceptional level of chemical stability, retaining its crystalline integrity even when immersed in highly concentrated acid (1 M HNO3) and alkali (20 M NaOH). The macrocycle's surface unveils four specific, customizable μ2-bridging sites, primed to accommodate diverse carboxylate ligands. This adaptability is highlighted through deliberate modifications achieved by alternating crystal soaking in alkali and carboxylic acid solutions. Furthermore, Ti16L4 macrocycles autonomously self-assemble into one-dimensional nanotubes, which subsequently organize into three distinct solid phases, contingent upon the specific nature of the four μ2-bridging ligands. Notably, the Ti16L4 exhibit a remarkable capacity for photocatalytic activity in selectively reducing CO2 to CO. Exploiting the macrocycle's modifiable shell yields a significant boost in performance, achieving an exceptional maximum CO release rate of 4.047 ± 0.243 mmol g-1 h-1. This study serves as a striking testament to the latent potential of precision-guided surface ligand manipulation within robust clusters, while also underpinning a platform for producing microporous materials endowed with a myriad of surface functionalities.

A Cationic Octanuclear Zirconium Peroxide Ring with Unusual Thermal Stability

Studies about the reaction of ZrIV ions with peroxides and the properties of the resulting zirconium peroxide clusters are significant for understanding zirconium chemistry in the nuclear fuel cycle and the advancement of less explored Group IV metal oxo clusters. Herein, an octanuclear zirconium peroxide cluster, designated as Zr8, was synthesized and characterized by using multiple techniques. Crystallographic analysis revealed that Zr8 has a ringlike structure and unusual positive charges, while tetravalent metal oxo clusters are mostly neutral. In situ variable-temperature Raman spectra indicated that Zr8 has unexpected thermal stability, which may be related to the strong interaction between ZrIV ions and peroxide groups. Small-angle X-ray scattering data showed that Zr8 self-assembled in the reactant solution prior to crystallization. In short, Zr8 expands the limited family of zirconium peroxide clusters and enriches the properties of metal peroxides.

Accurate binding of porous aluminum molecular ring catalysts with the substrate

Metal molecular rings are a class of compounds with aesthetically pleasing symmetry and fundamentally useful properties. The reported work generally focuses on the ring center cavity, and there is little known about those on the ring waist. Herein, we report the discovery of porous aluminum molecular rings and their performance and contribution to the cyanosilylation reaction. We develop a facile ligand induced aggregation and solvent regulation strategy towards AlOC-58NC and AlOC-59NT with high purity, high yield (75% and 70%, respectively) and gram-level scale-up. These molecular rings exhibit a "two-tier" pore feature involving the general central cavity and newly observed equatorial semi-open cavities. AlOC-59NT with two types of one-dimensional channels showed good catalytic activity. The interaction of the aluminum molecular ring catalyst with the substrate has been crystallographically characterized and theoretically confirmed, showing a ring adaptability process that involves the capture and binding of the substrate. This work provides new ideas for the assembly of porous metal molecular rings and to understand the overall reaction pathway involving aldehydes and is expected to inspire the design of low-cost catalysts through structural modifications.

Gradual Size Enlargement of Aluminum-Oxo Clusters and the Photochromic Properties

Metallic clusters, assembled by functional motifs, possess the attribute of regulating the properties by changing inorganic and organic components. In this work, a series of aluminum-oxo clusters, [Al₆O(dmp)₄(Hdmp)₂]·2ⁱPrOH [Al₆-1, H₃dmp = 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid], [Al₆(H₂thmmg)₆]·2DMF·2H₂O [Al₆-2, H₅thmmg = N-tris(hydroxymethyl)methylglycine], [Al₈(OH)₄(NAP-OH)₁₂(MeO)₇(MeOH)]Cl·7MeCN·3MeOH (Al₈, HNAP-OH = 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid), and [Al₁₀(NA)₁₀(MeO)₂₀] (Al₁₀, HNA = nicotinic acid), were obtained based on different carboxylic acids, realizing metallic ring size enlargement from 5.91 to 9.32 Å. They all exhibit good chemical stability. Importantly, the Al₈ cluster displays obvious photochromic behavior from pale yellow to orange yellow, originating from the generation of photoinduced radicals in the metal-assisted ligand-ligand electron transfer process of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNAP-OH). This work enriches the metal ring cluster chemistry and reports the example of the aluminum-oxo cluster-based photochromic material, developing a novel system of photochromic materials.

Keeping Superprotonic Conductivity over a Wide Temperature Region via Sulfate Hopping Sites-Decorated Zirconium-Oxo Clusters

Metal-oxo clusters have emerged as advanced proton conductors with well-defined and tunable structures. Nevertheless, the exploitation of metal-oxo clusters with high and stable proton conductivity over a relatively wide temperature range still remains a great challenge. Herein, three sulfate groups decorated zirconium-oxo clusters (Zr₆ , Zr₁₈ , and Zr₇₀ ) as proton conductors are reported, which exhibit ultrahigh bulk proton conductivities of 1.71 × 10^-1 , 2.01 × 10^-2 , and 3.73 × 10^-2  S cm^-1 under 70 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), respectively. Remarkably, Zr₆ and Zr₇₀ with multiple sulfate groups as proton hopping sites show ultralow activation energies of 0.22 and 0.18 eV, respectively, and stable bulk conductivities of >10^-2  S cm^-1 between 30 and 70 °C at 98% RH. Moreover, a time-dependent proton conductivity test reveals that the best performing Zr₆ can maintain high proton conductivity up to 15 h with negligible loss at 70 °C and 98% RH, representing one of the best crystalline cluster-based proton conducting materials.

Interfacial Unit-Dependent Catalytic Activity for CO Oxidation over Cerium Oxysulfate Cluster Assemblies

Atomically precise cerium oxo clusters offer a platform to investigate structure-property relationships that are much more complex in the ill-defined bulk material cerium dioxide. We investigated the activity of the MCe70 torus family (M = Cd, Ce, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn), a family of discrete oxysulfate-based Ce70 rings linked by monomeric cation units, for CO oxidation. CuCe70 emerged as the best performing MCe70 catalyst among those tested, prompting our exploration of the role of the interfacial unit on catalytic activity. Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) studies of the catalysts indicated a lower temperature reduction in CuCe70 as compared to CeCe70. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) indicated that CuCe70 exhibited a faster formation of Ce3+ and contained CO bridging sites absent in CeCe70. Isothermal CO adsorption measurements demonstrated a greater uptake of CO by CuCe70 as compared to CeCe70. The calculated energies for the formation of a single oxygen defect in the structure significantly decreased with the presence of Cu at the linkage site as opposed to Ce. This study revealed that atomic-level changes in the interfacial unit can change the reducibility, CO binding/uptake, and oxygen vacancy defect formation energetics in the MCe70 family to thus tune their catalytic activity.

Recent advances in the applications of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks and molecular clusters

This perspective highlights the recent advances in the structural and practical aspects of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks (Th-MOFs) and molecular clusters. Thorium, as an underexplored actinide, features surprisingly rich coordination geometries and accessibility of the 5f orbital. These features lead to a myriad of topologies and electronic structures, many of which are undocumented for other tetravalent metal-containing MOFs or clusters. Moreover, Th-MOFs inherit the modularity, structural tunability, porosity, and versatile functionality of the state-of-the-art MOFs. Recognizing the radioactive nature of these thorium-bearing materials that may limit their practical uses, Th-MOFs and Th-clusters still have great potential for various applications, including radionuclide sequestration, hydrocarbon storage/separation, radiation detection, photoswitch, CO₂ conversion, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. The objective of this updated perspective is to propose pathways for the renaissance of interest in thorium-based materials.

Record Aluminum Molecular Rings for Optical Limiting and Nonlinear Optics

Crystalline cluster materials, a class of functional motif aggregations, provide a great opportunity for tuning the properties stemming from the flexible and accurate variation of inorganic and organic compositions. In this study, we demonstrate the effects of functional ligand and ring size regulation on the structures and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Revealed by the single-crystal X-ray analysis results, aluminum molecular ring expansion is achieved by 2×9 and 3×6 strategies. In terms of the given organic shells, we further tuned the aluminum molecular ring sizes from 3.0 nm to 1.7 nm. The picosecond Z-scan measurements results revealed that the third-order NLO performances do not only depend on the general conjugate interactions but are also related to hydrogen bonding, polarizability, and ring sizes. The large nonlinear absorption coefficient and onset prove that the observed samples are promising candidates for the field of nonlinear optics.

Triethanolamine stabilized non-alkyl Sn4Cd4 and alkyl Sn2Cd12 oxo clusters with distinct electrocatalytic activities

Two unprecedented Sn/Cd-oxo clusters, including non-alkyltin Sn^II₂Sn^IV₂Cd₄ and alkyltin Sn^IV₂Cd₁₂, have been constructed using triethanolamine and inorganic or organic tin precursors, respectively. Comparative electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction experiments show that the presence of non-alkyl and variable-valent tin centres could greatly improve the catalytic activities.

Oxo-Cluster-Based Zr/HfIV Separation: Shedding Light on a 70-Year-Old Process

Zirconium and hafnium in the tetravalent oxidation state are considered the two most similar elements on the periodic table, based on their coexistence in nature and their identical solid-state chemistry. However, differentiating solution phase chemistry is crucial for their separation for nuclear applications that exploit the neutron capture of Hf and neutron transparency of Zr. Here we provide molecular level detail of the multiple factors that influence Zr/Hf separation in a long-exploited, empirically designed industrial solvent-extraction process that favors Hf extraction into an organic phase. In the aqueous solution, both Hf and Zr form an oxo-centered tetramer cluster with a core formula of [OM₄(OH)₆(NCS)₁₂]^4- (OM₄-NCS, M = Hf, Zr). This was identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, as well as small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), of both the aqueous and organic phase. In addition to this phase, Zr also forms (1) a large oxo-cluster formulated [Zr₄₈O₃₀(OH)₉₂(NCS)₄₀(H₂O)₄₀] (Zr₄₈) and (2) NCS adducts of OZr₄-NCS. Zr₄₈ was identified first by SAXS and then crystallized by exploiting favorable soft-metal bonding to the sulfur of NCS. While the large Zr₄₈ likely cannot be extracted due to its larger size, the NCS adducts of OZr₄-NCS are also less favorable to extraction due to the extra negative charge, which necessitates coextraction of an additional countercation (NH₄⁺) per extra NCS ligand. Differentiating Zr and Hf coordination and hydrolysis chemistry adds to our growing understanding that these two elements, beyond simple solid-state chemistry, have notable differences in chemical reactivity.

Acid/base responsive assembly/dis-assembly of a family of zirconium(IV) clusters with a cyclic imide-dioxime ligand

The hydrolytically stable dioxime ligand (2Z-6Z)-piperidine-2,6-dione (H₃pidiox) acts as a strong chelator mainly with hard metals in high oxidation states, a pre-requisite for potential applications in metal sequestering processes from aqueous solutions. Reaction of ZrCl₄ with H₃pidiox in methanol gives the mononuclear compound [Zr^IV(η¹,η¹,η²-H₂pidiox-O,N,O')₂(OH₂)₂]Cl₂·H₂O·CH₃OH (1), while the same reaction mixture in the presence of KOH gave the pentanuclear ZrOC [ZrIV5(μ₂-OH)₄(OH₂)₄(μ₂-η¹,η¹,η²-Hpidiox-O,N,O')₄(η¹,η¹,η¹-HpidioxO,N,O')₄]·5KCl·3CH₃OH·8H₂O (2). Compound 1 is formed at very acidic pH = 0, and the pentanuclear ZrOC 2 at higher pH values (pH = 2). Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis, multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS spectrometry. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis of 1 revealed a mononuclear zirconium(IV) compound containing an eight-coordinate zirconium atom bound to two singly deprotonated H₂pidiox^- ligands and two water molecules in a severely distorted bicapped octahedral geometry. The pentanuclear ZrOC 2 constitutes the second example of a Zr₅ cluster to be reported and the first one in which the four zirconium atoms are arranged in a tetrahedral arrangement with the fifth occupying the center of the tetrahedron. 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopies of the acidic CD₃OD solutions of complex 1 reveal a fast equilibrium between 1 and 2. Addition of KOH into a CH₃OH solution of 2 results in the controlled fast transformation of 2 to an asymmetric hexanuclear ZrOC 3 as evidenced by the NMR and real-time ESI-MS solution studies. Further addition of KOH to the solution of 3 leads to the ZrOC 4, and on the basis of NMR and ESI-MS data and in comparison with the known hexanuclear titanium(IV)/H₃pidiox cluster, it is concluded that the cluster 4 should have a hexanuclear structure. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) demonstrated not only the structural stability 1 and 2 in solution, but also revealed the reversible pH driven dis-assembly/re-assembly process between the monomeric 1 and the pentanuclear ZrOC 2.

Macrocyclic Inorganic Tin-Containing Oxo Clusters: Heterometallic Strategy for Configuration and Catalytic Activity Modulation

In this work, the first examples of inorganic macrocyclic tin-oxo clusters which are stabilized by sulfate ligands are reported. As determined by X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, the prepared inorganic Sn₁₀ -oxo cluster displays interesting mixed valence behaviors, with 8 Sn⁴⁺ located at the cyclic skeleton and two Sn²⁺ encapsulated in the center. When further introducing Ti⁴⁺ and In³⁺ ions to the synthetic systems, heterometallic Sn₂ Ti₆ and SnIn₅ Ti₆ complexes with Ti₆ (SO₄ )₉ and SnIn₅ (SO₄ )₁₂ macrocyclic skeletons were prepared whose configuration and packing models were affected by the ionic radius of incorporated metals. Moreover, comparative CO₂ reduction experiments confirm that such heterometallic composition can significantly improve the catalytic activities of these inorganic macrocyclic oxo clusters. This work represents a milestone in constructing inorganic tin complexes and also macrocyclic metal oxo clusters with tunable configurations and properties.

Role of Organic Fluoride Salts in Stabilizing Niobium Oxo-Clusters Catalyzing Epoxidation

We present here that easily available organic salts can stabilize/modify niobium (Nb) oxo-clusters. The as-synthesized Nb oxo-clusters have been characterized by various methods. These Nb oxo-clusters were catalytically active for the epoxidation of allylic alcohols and olefins with H₂O₂ as an oxidant. Notably, Nb-OC@TBAF-0.5 appeared as highly dispersed nanosized particles and showed the highest catalytic activity, which can be attributed to the following reasons on the basis of characterization. First, the strong coordination of fluorine ions with Nb sites and the steric protection with bulky organic cations led to high stabilization and dispersion of the oxo-clusters in the course of the reaction. Second, a hydrogen-bond interaction between the coordinated fluorine atom and the -OH group of allylic alcohol favored the epoxidation reaction. Third, the electron density of Nb sites decreased due to the strong electron-withdrawing ability of F^- adjacent to Nb sites, thus promoting the electrophilic oxygen transfer to the C═C bond.

Snapshots of Ce70 Toroid Assembly from Solids and Solution

Crystallization at the solid-liquid interface is difficult to spectroscopically observe and therefore challenging to understand and ultimately control at the molecular level. The Ce₇₀-torroid formulated [Ce^IV₇₀(OH)₃₆(O)₆₄(SO₄)₆₀(H₂O)₁₀]^4-, part of a larger emerging family of M^IV₇₀-materials (M = Zr, U, Ce), presents such an opportunity. We elucidated assembly mechanisms by the X-ray scattering (small-angle scattering and total scattering) of solutions and solids as well as crystallizing and identifying fragments of Ce₇₀ by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Fragments show evidence for templated growth (Ce₅, [Ce₅(O)₃(SO₄)₁₂]^10-) and modular assembly from hexamer (Ce₆) building units (Ce₁₃, [Ce₁₃(OH)₆(O)₁₂(SO₄)₁₄(H₂O)₁₄]^6- and Ce₆₂, [Ce₆₂(OH)₃₀(O)₅₈(SO₄)₅₈]^14-). Ce₆₂, an almost complete ring, precipitates instantaneously in the presence of ammonium cations as two torqued arcs that interlock by hydrogen boding through NH₄⁺, a structural motif not observed before in inorganic systems. The room temperature rapid assemblies of both Ce₇₀ and Ce₆₂, respectively, by the addition of Li⁺ and NH₄⁺, along with ion-exchange and redox behavior, invite exploitation of this emerging material family in environmental and energy applications.

CeIV 70 Oxosulfate Rings, Frameworks, Supramolecular Assembly, and Redox Activity*

M^IV molecular oxo-clusters (M=Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu) are prolific in bottoms-up material design, catalysis, and elucidating reaction pathways in nature and in synthesis. Here we introduce Ce₇₀ , a wheel-shaped oxo-cluster, [Ce^IV ₇₀ (OH)₃₆ (O)₆₄ (SO₄ )₆₀ (H₂ O)₁₀ ]^4- . Ce₇₀ crystallizes into intricate high pore volume frameworks with divalent transition metals and Ce-monomer linkers. Eight crystal-structures feature four framework types in which the Ce₇₀ -rings are linked as propellers, in offset-stacks, in a tartan pattern, and as isolated rings. Small-angle X-ray scattering of Ce₇₀ dissolved in butylamine, with and without added cations (Ce^IV , alkaline earths, Mn^II ), shows the metals' differentiating roles in ring linking, leading to supramolecular assemblies. The large acidic pores and abundant terminal sulfates provide ion-exchange behavior, demonstrated with U^IV and Nd^III . Frameworks featuring Ce^III/IV -monomer linkers demonstrate both oxidation and reduction. This study opens the door to mixed-metal, highly porous framework catalysts, and new clusters for metal-organic framework design.

A Toroidal Zr70 Oxysulfate Cluster and Its Diverse Packing Structures

Herein, we report the discovery of a toroidal inorganic cluster of zirconium(IV) oxysulfate of unprecedented size with the formula Zr₇₀(SO₄)₅₈(O/OH)₁₄₆⋅x(H₂O) (Zr₇₀), which displays different packing of ring units and thus several polymorphic crystal structures. The ring measures over 3 nm across, has an inner cavity of 1 nm and displays a pseudo‐10‐fold rotational symmetry of Zr₆ octahedra bridged by an additional Zr in the outer rim of the ring. Depending on the co‐crystallizing species, the rings form various crystalline phases in which the torus units are connected in extended chain and network structures. One phase, in which the ring units are arranged in layers and form one‐dimensional channels, displays high permanent porosity (BET surface area: 241 m² g⁻¹), and thus demonstrates a functional property for potential use in, for example, adsorption or heterogeneous catalysis.
