Atomic‐Level Modulation of Electronic Density at Cobalt Single‐Atom Sites Derived from Metal–Organic Frameworks: Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Performance

Design of Atomically Dispersed CoN4 Sites and Co Clusters for Synergistically Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Constructing dual-site catalysts consisting of atomically dispersed metal single atoms and metal atomic clusters (MACs) is a promising approach to further boost the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a porous CoSA-AC@SNC featuring the coexistence of Co single-atom sites (CoN4) and S-coordinated Co atomic clusters (SCo6) in S, N co-doped carbon substrate is successfully synthesized by using porphyrinic metal-organic framework (Co-TPyP MOF) as the precursor. The introduction of the sulfur source creates abundant microstructural defects to anchor Co metal clusters, thus modulating the electronic structure of its surrounding carbon substrate. The synergistic effect between the two types of active sites and structural advantages, in turn, results in high ORR performance of CoSA-AC@SNC with half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.86 V and Tafel slope of 50.17 mV dec-1. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also support the synergistic effect between CoN4 and SCo6 by detailing the catalytic mechanism for the improved ORR performance. The as-fabricated Zn-air battery (ZAB) using CoSA-AC@SNC demonstrates impressive peak power density of 174.1 mW cm-2 and charge/discharge durability for 148 h. This work provides a facile synthesis route for dual-site catalysts and can be extended to the development of other efficient atomically dispersed metal-based electrocatalysts.

Size-Dependent Catalysis in Fenton-like Chemistry: From Nanoparticles to Single Atoms

State-of-the-art Fenton-like reactions are crucial in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification. This review explores the latest advancements in heterogeneous metal-based catalysts within AOPs, covering nanoparticles (NPs), single-atom catalysts (SACs), and ultra-small atom clusters. A distinct connection between the physical properties of these catalysts, such as size, degree of unsaturation, electronic structure, and oxidation state, and their impacts on catalytic behavior and efficacy in Fenton-like reactions. In-depth comparative analysis of metal NPs and SACs is conducted focusing on how particle size variations and metal-support interactions affect oxidation species and pathways. The review highlights the cutting-edge characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, indispensable for deciphering the complex electronic and structural characteristics of active sites in downsized metal particles. Additionally, the review underscores innovative strategies for immobilizing these catalysts onto membrane surfaces, offering a solution to the inherent challenges of powdered catalysts. Recent advances in pilot-scale or engineering applications of Fenton-like-based devices are also summarized for the first time. The paper concludes by charting new research directions, emphasizing advanced catalyst design, precise identification of reactive oxygen species, and in-depth mechanistic studies. These efforts aim to enhance the application potential of nanotechnology-based AOPs in real-world wastewater treatment.

Advances and challenges in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide

The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (ECO2RR) is a promising way to realize the transformation of waste into valuable material, which can not only meet the environmental goal of reducing carbon emissions, but also obtain clean energy and valuable industrial products simultaneously. Herein, we first introduce the complex CO2RR mechanisms based on the number of carbons in the product. Since the coupling of C-C bonds is unanimously recognized as the key mechanism step in the ECO2RR for the generation of high-value products, the structural-activity relationship of electrocatalysts is systematically reviewed. Next, we comprehensively classify the latest developments, both experimental and theoretical, in different categories of cutting-edge electrocatalysts and provide theoretical insights on various aspects. Finally, challenges are discussed from the perspectives of both materials and devices to inspire researchers to promote the industrial application of the ECO2RR at the earliest.

Enhanced Electron Delocalization Induced by Ferromagnetic Sulfur doped C3N4 Triggers Selective H2O2 Production

For the 2D metal-free carbon catalysts, the atomic coplanar architecture enables a large number of pz orbitals to overlap laterally, thus forming π-electron delocalization, and the delocalization degree of the central atom dominates the catalytic activity. Herein, designing sulfur-doped defect-rich graphitic carbon nitride (S-Nv-C3N4) materials as a model, we propose a strategy to promote localized electron polarization by enhancing the ferromagnetism of ultra-thin 2D carbon nitride nanosheets. The introduction of sulfur (S) further promotes localized ferromagnetic coupling, thereby inducing long-range ferromagnetic ordering and accelerating the electron interface transport. Meanwhile, the hybridization of sulfur atoms breaks the symmetry and integrity of the unit structure, promotes electron enrichment and stimulating electron delocalization at the active site. This optimization enhances the *OOH desorption, providing a favorable kinetic pathway for the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Consequently, S-Nv-C3N4 exhibits high selectivity (>95 %) and achieves a superb H2O2 production rate, approaching 4374.8 ppm during continuous electrolysis over 300 hour. According to theoretical calculation and in situ spectroscopy, the ortho-S configuration can provide ferromagnetic perturbation in carbon active centers, leading to the electron delocalization, which optimizes the OOH* adsorption during the catalytic process.

Planar Chlorination Engineering: A Strategy of Completely Breaking the Geometric Symmetry of Fe-N4 Site for Boosting Oxygen Electroreduction

Introducing asymmetric elements and breaking the geometric symmetry of traditional metal-N4 site for boosting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are meaningful and challenging. Herein, the planar chlorination engineering of Fe-N4 site is first proposed for remarkably improving the ORR activity. The Fe-N4/CNCl catalyst with broken symmetry exhibits a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.917 V versus RHE, 49 and 72 mV higher than those of traditional Fe-N4/CN and commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. The Fe-N4/CNCl catalyst also has excellent stability for 25 000 cycles and good methanol tolerance ability. For Zn-air battery test, the Fe-N4/CNCl catalyst has the maximum power density of 228 mW cm-2 and outstanding stability during 150 h charge-discharge test, as the promising substitute of Pt-based catalysts in energy storage and conversion devices. The density functional theory calculation demonstrates that the adjacent C─Cl bond effectively breaks the symmetry of Fe-N4 site, downward shifts the d-band center of Fe, facilitates the reduction and release of OH*, and remarkably lowers the energy barrier of rate-determining step. This work reveals the enormous potential of planar chlorination engineering for boosting the ORR activity of traditional metal-N4 site by thoroughly breaking their geometric symmetry.

Aluminium, Nitrogen-Dual-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Co-Existing with Cobalt-Encapsulated Graphitic Carbon Nanotube as an Activity Modulated Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Electrochemistry Applications

There is a rising need to create high-performing, affordable electrocatalysts in the new field of oxygen electrochemistry. Here, a cost-effective, activity-modulated electrocatalyst with the capacity to trigger both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline environment is presented. The catalyst (Al, Co/N-rGCNT) is made up of aluminium, nitrogen-dual-doped reduced graphene oxide sheets co-existing with cobalt-encapsulated carbon nanotube units. Based on X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) studies, it is established that the superior reaction kinetics in Al, Co/N-rGCNT over their bulk counterparts can be attributed to their electronic regulation. The Al, Co/N-rGCNT performs as a versatile bifunctional electrocatalyst for zinc-air battery (ZAB), delivering an open circuit potential ≈1.35 V and peak power density of 106.3 mW cm-2, which are comparable to the system based on Pt/C. The Al, Co/N-rGCNT-based system showed a specific capacity of 737 mAh gZn -1 compared to 696 mAh gZn -1 delivered by the system based on Pt/C. The DFT calculations indicate that the adsorption of Co in the presence of Al doping in NGr improves the electronic properties favoring ORR. Thus, the Al, Co/N-rGCNT-based rechargeable ZAB (RZAB) emerges as a highly viable and affordable option for the development of RZAB for practical applications.

Vacancy-Enhanced Sb-N4 Sites for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Zn-Air Battery

With the advantages of a Fenton-inactive characteristic and unique p electrons that can hybridize with O2 molecules, p-block metal-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have tremendous potential. Nevertheless, their undesirable intrinsic activity caused by the closed d10 electronic configuration remains a major challenge. Herein, an Sb-based SAC featuring carbon vacancy-enhanced Sb-N4 active centers, corroborated by the results of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure, has been developed for an incredibly effective ORR. The obtained SbSA-N-C demonstrates a positive half-wave potential of 0.905 V and excellent structural stability in alkaline environments. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the carbon vacancies weaken the adsorption between Sb atoms and the OH* intermediate, thus promoting the ORR performance. Practically, the SbSA-N-C-based Zn-air batteries achieve impressive outcomes, such as a high power density of 181 mW cm-2, showing great potential in real-world applications.

Regulation Strategies for Fe-N-C and Co-N-C Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and alkaline membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have received great attention as energy devices of the next generation. Accelerating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics is the key to improve PEMFC and AEMFC performance. Platinum-based catalysts are the most widely used catalysts for the ORR, but their high price and low abundance limit the commercialization of fuel cells. Non-noble metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) is considered to be the most likely material class to replace Pt-based catalysts, among which Fe-N-C and Co-N-C have been widely studied due to their excellent intrinsic ORR performance and have made great progress in the past decades. With the improvement of synthesis technology and a deeper understanding of the ORR mechanism, some reported Fe-N-C and Co-N-C catalysts have shown excellent ORR activity close to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Inspired by the progress, regulation strategies for Fe-N-C and Co-N-C catalysts are summarized in this Review from 5 perspectives: (1) coordinated atoms, (2) environmental heteroatoms and defects, (3) dual-metal active sites, (4) metal-based particle promoters, and (5) curved carbon layers. We also make suggestions on some challenges facing Fe-N-C and Co-N-C research.

Confined Synthesis of Dual-Atoms Within Pores of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts exhibit higher reactivity and selectivity than the single-atom catalysts. The pyrolysis of bimetal salt precursors is the most typical method for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts; however, the finiteness of bimetal salts limits the variety of dual-atomic catalysts. In this study, a confined synthesis strategy for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts is developed. Owing to the in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in the pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the migration and aggregation of metal atoms are suppressed adequately during the pyrolysis process. The resultant catalyst contains abundant Zn─Co dual atomic sites with 2.8 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Co. The catalyst exhibits high reactivity toward oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V, which is superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Zn atoms in the Zn─Co dual atomic sites promote the formation of intermediate OOH*, and thus contribute to high catalytic performance. This study provides new insights into the design of dual-atom catalysts using COFs.

Room-Temperature Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroarene Over Atomic Metal-Nonmetal Catalytic Pair

Constructing atomic catalytic pair emerges as an attractive strategy to achieve better catalytic performance. Herein, an atomic Ir1─P1/NPG catalyst with asymmetric Ir─N2P1 sites that delivers superb activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of various functionalized nitrostyrene is reported. In the hydrogenation reaction of 3-nitrostyrene, Ir1─P1/NPG (NPG refers to N, P-codoped graphene) shows a turnover frequency of 1197 h-1, while the reaction cannot occur over Ir1/NG (NG refers to N-doped graphene). Compared to Ir1/NG, the charge density of the Ir site in Ir1─P1/NPG is greatly elevated, which is conducive to H2 dissociation. Moreover, as revealed by density functional theory calculations and poisoning experiments, the P site in Ir1─P1/NPG is found able to bind nitrostyrene, while the neighboring Ir site provides H to reduce the nitro group in chemoselective hydrogenation of nitrostyrene. This work offers a successful example of establishing atomic catalytic pair for driving important chemical reactions, paving the way for the development of more advanced catalysts to further improve the catalytic performance.

Atomically Dispersed Fe Sites Regulated by Adjacent Single Co Atoms Anchored on N-P Co-Doped Carbon Structures for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Manipulating the coordination environment and electron distribution for heterogeneous catalysts at the atomic level is an effective strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance but remains challenging. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe and Co anchored on nitrogen, phosphorus co-doped carbon hollow nanorod structures (FeCo-NPC) are rationally designed and synthesized. The as-prepared FeCo-NPC catalyst exhibits significantly boosted electrocatalytic kinetics and greatly upshifts the half-wave potential for the oxygen reduction reaction. Furthermore, when utilized as the cathode, the FeCo-NPC catalyst also displays excellent zinc-air battery performance. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the introduction of single Co atoms with Co-N/P coordination around isolated Fe atoms induces asymmetric electron distribution, resulting in the suitable adsorption/desorption ability for oxygen intermediates and the optimized reaction barrier, thereby improving the electrocatalytic activity.

Design Principles and Mechanistic Understandings of Non-Noble-Metal Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Zinc-Air Batteries

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising energy storage systems because of high theoretical energy density, safety, low cost, and abundance of zinc. However, the slow multi-step reaction of oxygen and heavy reliance on noble-metal catalysts hinder the practical applications of ZABs. Therefore, feasible and advanced non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for air cathodes need to be identified to promote the oxygen catalytic reaction. In this review, we initially introduced the advancement of ZABs in the past two decades and provided an overview of key developments in this field. Then, we discussed the working mechanism and the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts from the perspective of morphology design, crystal structure tuning, interface strategy, and atomic engineering. We also included theoretical studies, machine learning, and advanced characterization technologies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-performance relationship of electrocatalysts and the reaction pathways of the oxygen redox reactions. Finally, we discussed the challenges and prospects related to designing advanced non-noble-metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for ZABs.

Molecular architectures of iron complexes for oxygen reduction catalysis-Activity enhancement by hydroxide ions coupling

Developing cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for clean energy generation. Here, we propose an approach to the synthesis of iron phthalocyanine nanotubes (FePc NTs) as a highly active and selective electrocatalyst for ORR. The performance is significantly superior to FePc in randomly aggregated and molecularly dispersed states, as well as the commercial Pt/C catalyst. When FePc NTs are anchored on graphene, the resulting architecture shifts the ORR potentials above the redox potentials of Fe2+/3+ sites. This does not obey the redox-mediated mechanism operative on conventional FePc with a Fe2+-N moiety serving as the active sites. Pourbaix analysis shows that the redox of Fe2+/3+ sites couples with HO- ions transfer, forming a HO-Fe3+-N moiety serving as the ORR active sites under the turnover condition. The chemisorption of ORR intermediates is appropriately weakened on the HO-Fe3+-N moiety compared to the Fe2+-N state and thus is intrinsically more ORR active.

Simultaneously Engineering the First and Second Coordination Shells of Single Iron Catalysts for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction

The atomically dispersed Fe-N4 active site presents enormous potential for various renewable energy conversions. Despite its already remarkable catalytic performance, the local atomic microenvironment of each Fe atom can be regulated to further enhance its efficiency. Herein, a novel conceptual strategy that utilizes a simple salt-template polymerization method to simultaneously adjust the first coordination shell (Fe-N3 S1 ) and second coordination shell (C-S-C, a structure similar to thiophene) of Fe-N4 isolated atoms is proposed. Theoretical studies suggest that this approach can redistribute charge density in the MN4 moiety, lowering the d-band center of the metal site. This weakens the binding of oxygenated intermediates, enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity when compared to only implementing coordination shell regulation. Based on the above discovery, a single Fe atom electrocatalyst with the optimal Fe-N3 S1 -S active moiety incorporated in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped graphene (Fe-SAc/NSG) is designed and synthesized. The Fe-SAc/NSG catalyst exhibits excellent alkaline ORR activity, exceeding benchmark Pt/C and most Fe-SAc ORR electrocatalysts, as well as superior stability in Zn-air battery. This work aims to pave the way for creating highly active single metal atom catalysts through the localized regulation of their atomic structure.

Preparation and Application of Single-Atom Cobalt Catalysts in Organic Synthesis and Environmental Remediation

The development of high-performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost-effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non-noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single-atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single-atom Co catalysts (Co-SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co-SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure-activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co-SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co-SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

Salt Effect Engineering Single Fe-N2P2-Cl Sites on Interlinked Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Zn-Air Batteries

Developing efficient metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) single-atom catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is significant for the widespread implementation of Zn-air batteries, while the synergic design of the matrix microstructure and coordination environment of metal centers remains challenges. Herein, a novel salt effect-induced strategy is proposed to engineer N and P coordinated atomically dispersed Fe atoms with extra-axial Cl on interlinked porous carbon nanosheets, achieving a superior single-atom Fe catalyst (denoted as Fe-NP-Cl-C) for ORR and Zn-air batteries. The hierarchical porous nanosheet architecture can provide rapid mass/electron transfer channels and facilitate the exposure of active sites. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the distinctive Fe-N2P2-Cl active sites afford significantly reduced energy barriers and promoted reaction kinetics for ORR. Consequently, the Fe-NP-Cl-C catalyst exhibits distinguished ORR performance with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.92 V and excellent stability. Remarkably, the assembled Zn-air battery based on Fe-NP-Cl-C delivers an extremely high peak power density of 260 mW cm-2 and a large specific capacity of 812 mA h g-1, outperforming the commercial Pt/C and most reported congeneric catalysts. This study offers a new perspective on structural optimization and coordination engineering of single-atom catalysts for efficient oxygen electrocatalysis and energy conversion devices.

Recent Advances in Hierarchical Porous Engineering of MOFs and Their Derived Materials for Catalytic and Battery: Methods and Application

Hierarchical porous materials have attracted the attention of researchers due to their enormous specific surface area, maximized active site utilization efficiency, and unique structure and properties. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a unique mix of properties that make them particularly appealing as tunable porous substrates containing highly active sites. This review focuses on recent advances in the types and synthetic strategies of hierarchical porous MOFs and their derived materials. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the mass diffusion and transport of hierarchical porous structures and the pore size with examples and simulations, while identifying their potential and limitations. On this basis, how the synthesis conditions affect the structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs based hierarchical porous materials with different structures is discussed, highlighting the prospects and challenges for the synthetization, as well as further scientific research and practical applications. Finally, some insights into current research and future design ideas for advanced MOFs based hierarchical porous materials are presented.

Manipulation of Electronic States of Pt Sites via d-Band Center Tuning for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Expediting the torpid kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode with minimal amounts of Pt under acidic conditions plays a significant role in the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, a novel Pt-N-C system consisting of Pt single atoms and nanoparticles anchored onto the defective carbon nanofibers is proposed as a highly active ORR catalyst (denoted as Pt-N-C). Detailed characterizations together with theoretical simulations illustrate that the strong coupling effect between different Pt sites can enrich the electron density of Pt sites, modify the d-band electronic environments, and optimize the oxygen intermediate adsorption energies, ultimately leading to significantly enhanced ORR performance. Specifically, the as-designed Pt-N-C demonstrates exceptional ORR properties with a high half-wave potential of 0.84 V. Moreover, the mass activity of Pt-N-C reaches 193.8 mA gPt-1 at 0.9 V versus RHE, which is 8-fold greater than that of Pt/C, highlighting the enormously improved electrochemical properties. More impressively, when integrated into a membrane electrode assembly as cathode in an air-fed PEMFC, Pt-N-C achieved a higher maximum power density (655.1 mW cm-2) as compared to Pt/C-based batteries (376.25 mW cm-2), hinting at the practical application of Pt-N-C in PEMFCs.

Revealing Distance-Dependent Synergy between MnCo2O4 and Co-N-C in Boosting the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Synergistic effects have been applied to a variety of hybrid electrocatalysts to improve their activity and selectivity. Understanding the synergistic mechanism is crucial for the rational design of these types of catalysts. Here, we synthesize a MnCo2O4/Co-N-C hybrid electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and systematically investigate the synergy between MnCo2O4 nanoparticles and Co-N-C support. Theoretical simulations reveal that the synergy is closely related to the distance between active sites. For a pair of remote active sites, the ORR proceeds through the known 2e- + 2e- relay catalysis while the direct 4e- ORR occurs on a pair of adjacent active sites. Therefore, the formation of the undesired byproduct (H2O2) is inhibited at the interface region between MnCo2O4 and Co-N-C. This synergistic effect is further verified on an anion-exchange membrane fuel cell. The findings deepen the understanding of synergistic catalysis and will provide guidance for the rational design of hybrid electrocatalysts.

Review of Carbon Support Coordination Environments for Single Metal Atom Electrocatalysts (SACS)

This topical review focuses on the distinct role of carbon support coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) for electrocatalysis. The article begins with an overview of atomic coordination configurations in SACs, including a discussion of the advanced characterization techniques and simulation used for understanding the active sites. A summary of key electrocatalysis applications is then provided. These processes are oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR). The review then shifts to modulation of the metal atom-carbon coordination environments, focusing on nitrogen and other non-metal coordination through modulation at the first coordination shell and modulation in the second and higher coordination shells. Representative case studies are provided, starting with the classic four-nitrogen-coordinated single metal atom (MN4 ) based SACs. Bimetallic coordination models including homo-paired and hetero-paired active sites are also discussed, being categorized as emerging approaches. The theme of the discussions is the correlation between synthesis methods for selective doping, the carbon structure-electron configuration changes associated with the doping, the analytical techniques used to ascertain these changes, and the resultant electrocatalysis performance. Critical unanswered questions as well as promising underexplored research directions are identified.

Atomically Dispersed ZnN4 Sites Anchored on P-Functionalized Carbon with Hierarchically Ordered Porous Structures for Boosted Electroreduction of CO2

Tuning the coordination structures of metal sites is intensively studied to improve the performances of single-atom site catalysts (SASC). However, the pore structure of SASC, which is highly related to the accessibility of active sites, has received little attention. In this work, single-atom ZnN4 sites embedded in P-functionalized carbon with hollow-wall and 3D ordered macroporous structure (denoted as H-3DOM-ZnN4 /P-C) are constructed. The creation of hollow walls in ordered macroporous structures can largely increase the external surface area to expose more active sites. The introduction of adjacent P atoms can optimize the electronic structure of ZnN4 sites through long-rang regulation to enhance the intrinsic activity and selectivity. In the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, H-3DOM-ZnN4 /P-C exhibits high CO Faradaic efficiency over 90% in a wide potential window (500 mV) and a large turnover frequency up to 7.8 × 104  h-1 at -1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, much higher than its counterparts without the hierarchically ordered structure or P-functionalization.

Triethylenediamine cobalt complex encapsulated in a metal-organic framework cage to prepare a cobalt single-atom catalyst with a high Co-N4 density for an efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Transition metal single atom catalysts (TM SACs) are the most promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. However, the low density of M-Nx active sites seriously hinders further improvement of the ORR electrocatalytic activity. Here, a strategy for encapsulating nitrogen-rich guest molecules (triethylenediamine cobalt complex, [Co(en)3]3+) was proposed to construct a high-performance cobalt single-atom catalyst (Co-encapsulated SAC/NC). With this strategy, the guest molecules are encapsulated into metal-organic framework (MOF) cages as an additional cobalt source to boost cobalt loading, while abundant nitrogen from guest molecules contributes to the formation of Co-N4 active sites. Remarkably, the resulting Co-encapsulated SAC/NC has a high cobalt loading amount of 4.03 wt%, and spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM) has confirmed that most cobalt exists in a single-atom state. As a result, the Co-encapsulated SAC/NC exhibits excellent ORR catalytic performance with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V. Furthermore, Zn-air batteries employing Co-encapsulated SAC/NC as air cathode show high peak power density and excellent cycling stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that adjacent active sites have different rate-determining steps and lower reaction energy barriers than a single active site.

Atomic Distance Engineering in Metal Catalysts to Regulate Catalytic Performance

It is very important to understand the structure-performance relationship of metal catalysts by adjusting the microstructure of catalysts at the atomic scale. The atomic distance has an essential influence on the composition of the environment of active metal atom, which is a key factor for the design of targeted catalysts with desired function. In this review, we discuss and summarize strategies for changing the atomic distance from three aspects and relate their effects on the reactivity of catalysts. First, the effects of regulating bond length between metal and coordination atom at one single-atom site on the catalytic performance are introduced. The bond lengths are affected by the strain effect of the support and high-shell doping and can evolve during the reaction. Next, the influence of the distance between single-atom sites on the catalytic performance is discussed. Due to the space matching of adsorption and electron transport, the catalytic performance can be adjusted with the shortening of site distance. In addition, the effect of the arrangement spacing of the surface metal active atoms on the catalytic performance of metal nanocatalysts is studied. Finally, a comprehensive summary and outlook of the relationship between atomic distance and catalytic performance is given.

Potential Dominates Structural Recombination of Single Atom Mn Sites for Promoting Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Single atom sites (SAS) often undergo structural recombination in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while the effect of valence state and reconstruction on active centers needs to be investigated thoroughly. Herein, the Mn-SAS catalyst with uniform and precise Mn-N4 configuration is rationally designed. We utilize operando synchrotron radiation to track the dynamic evolution of active centers during ORR. Under the applied potential, the structural evolution of Mn-N4 into Mn-N3 C and further into Mn-N2 C2 configurations is clarified. Simultaneously, the valence states of Mn are increased from +3.0 to +3.8 and then decreased to +3.2. When the potential is removed, the catalyst returned to its initial Mn+3.0 -N4 configuration. Such successive evolutions optimize the electronic and geometric structures of active centers as evidenced by theory calculations. The evolved Mn+3.8 -N3 C and Mn+3.2 -N2 C2 configurations respectively adjust the O2 adsorption and reduce the energy barrier of rate-determining step. Thus, it can achieve an onset potential of 0.99 V, superior stability over 10,000 cycles, and a high turnover frequency of 1.59 s-1 at 0.85 VRHE. Our present work provides new insights into the construction of well-defined SAS catalysts by regulating the valence states and configurations of active centers.

Inductive Effect on Single-Atom Sites

Single-atom catalysts exhibit promising electrocatalytic activity, a trait that can be further enhanced through the introduction of heteroatom doping within the carbon skeleton. Nonetheless, the intricate relationship between the doping positions and activity remains incompletely elucidated. This contribution sheds light on an inductive effect of single-atom sites, showcasing that the activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) can be augmented by reducing the spatial gap between the doped heteroatom and the single-atom sites. Drawing inspiration from this inductive effect, we propose a synthesis strategy involving ligand modification aimed at precisely adjusting the distance between dopants and single-atom sites. This precise synthesis leads to optimized electrocatalytic activity for the ORR. The resultant electrocatalyst, characterized by Fe-N3P1 single-atom sites, demonstrates remarkable ORR activity, thus exhibiting great potential in zinc-air batteries and fuel cells.

Co-Fe3C pair sites catalyst with heterometallic dual active sites for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Newly emerging metal-based pair sites catalysts show great potential because they can provide more metal active centers with synergistic effect for green catalysis, compared with single site catalysts. However, both the synthesis and catalytic mechanisms of the pair sites catalyst with new structural features need to be developed vigorously to promote the desired chemical reactions, especially carbon-based metal catalysts for green energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, we constructed highly active Co-Fe3C pair sites on N-doped graphite catalyst (CNCo-Fe3C) by a two-step strategy, which have electron interactions of heterometallic atoms and can play better synergistic effect. X-ray absorption spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculation further identify the presence of heterometallic active sites in the pair sites catalyst, resulting in electron redistribution and positive d-band center due to the electron interactions. The more positive d-band center model predicts the optimization of the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates, and reduces the energy barrier of the determining step. This further results in superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.90 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs.RHE) and superior long-term stability for about 20 h with only 2.3 % decrease at 0.75 V vs.RHE in 0.1 M KOH solution. Additionally, it also shows significant peak power density of 124 mW cm-2 and prominent cycling stability performance exceeding 400 h at 5 mA cm-2 in the Zn-air battery (ZAB) test, which is higher than that of Pt/C catalyst. This work provides a new idea for the regulation of intrinsic activity of non-noble metal ORR catalysts through the synergistic effect of the pair sites.

Boosting Oxygen Reduction Reaction Kinetics by Designing Rich Vacancy Coupling Pentagons in the Defective Carbon

In the energy conversion context, the design and synthesis of high-performance metal-free carbon nanomaterials with topological defects for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are essential. Herein, we first report a template-assisted strategy to fabricate carbon defect electrocatalysts with rich vacancy coupling pentagons (VP) as active sites in two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanosheets (VP/CNs). Experimental characterizations verify the presence of abundant VP active sites in the VP/CNs electrocatalyst, and the ORR activity is linearly related to the amounts of VP active sites. In situ spectroscopic results identify that the VP/CNs can catalyze direct O-O bond cleavage, bypassing the formation of traditional *OOH intermediates, resulting in the fast kinetics of ORR via a dissociative pathway. The as-prepared VP/CNs show outstanding intrinsic activity for alkaline ORR (half-wave potential of 0.86 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) with an almost 99% efficiency for four-electron selectivity, outperforming that using the benchmark of Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the cooperative effect between carbon vacancy and adjacent pentagons significantly increases the charge transfer and achieves a lower ORR reaction energy barrier compared with the counterpart of adjacent pentagons or single pentagon. The well-designed carbon defects pave a new avenue for the rational design of metal-free electrocatalysts with high efficiency.

A Conductive Two-dimensional Trimetallic FeCoNi-Benzenehexathiol π-d Conjugated Metal-organic Framework for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The poor electrically conductivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the main factor hinder their application in electrocatalysis field. In this work, we synthesize a conductive two-dimensional (2D) trimetallic π-d conjugated metal-organic framework (MOF) FeCoNi-BHT (BHT = 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexathiol) through coordinating Co, Fe and Ni ions with 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexathiol ligands. FeCoNi-BHT is demonstrated possessing homogeneously dispersed abundant Co-S4, Fe-S4, Ni-S4 single-atom active sites (14.26 wt% of the metal elements) and a large specific surface area (267.05 m2g-1). The room temperature conductivity of FeCoNi-BHT is measured to be 92 S m-1, indicating its metallic behavior. DFT theoretical calculation reveals that the π-d conjugation structure of FeCoNi-BHT is responsible for its metallic behavior. In addition, FeCoNi-BHT exhibits prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (an overpotential of 266 mV vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel value of 58 mV dec-1) in alkaline media. The combined experimental and DFT studies reveal that the synergistic effect of Co, Fe, Ni sites of FeCoNi-BHT contribute to its prominent OER activity. This work paves a new avenue of developing 2D π-d conjugated MOFs with different metal centers as highly efficient eletrocatalysts.

Boosting oxygen reduction reaction kinetics through perturbating electronic structure of single-atom Fe-N3S1 catalyst with sub-nano FeS cluster

Single atomic Fe-N4 catalyst exhibits a great prospect for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and adjusting the intrinsic coordination structure and the carbon matrix structure effectively improves the catalytic activity. However, controlling the active site coordination structure and its surrounding environment at atomic level remains a challenge. In this paper, Fe-N3S1 and FeS sub-nano cluster were innovatively concatenated on S, N co-doped carbon matrix (SNC), denoted as FeS/FeSA@SNC catalysts, for modulating ORR catalysis performance. Both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations have confirmed that the local electron configuration of Fe center is modulated by this unique structure combination leading to optimized ORR kinetics. Based on this design, the synthesized FeS/FeSA@SNC delivers ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.9 V (vs. RHE), excelling that of commercial Pt/C (0.87 V) and the Zn-air battery (ZAB) with this cathode catalyst delivers a peak power density of 126 mW cm-2. This work presents a novel strategy for manipulating the single-atom active sites through control the local coordination structure and provides a reference for the development of novel efficient ORR electrocatalysts.

Adapting Synthetic Models of Heme/Cu Sites to Energy-Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction

In nature, cytochrome c oxidases catalyze the 4e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the heme/Cu site, in which CuI is used to assist O2 activation. Because of the thermodynamic barrier to generate CuI , synthetic Fe-porphyrin/Cu complexes usually show moderate electrocatalytic ORR activity. We herein report on a Co-corrole/Co complex 1-Co for energy-efficient electrocatalytic ORR. By hanging a CoII ion over Co corrole, 1-Co realizes electrocatalytic 4e- ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V versus RHE, which is outstanding among corrole-based electrocatalysts. Notably, 1-Co outperforms Co corrole hanged with CuII or ZnII . We revealed that the hanging CoII ion can provide an electron to improve O2 binding thermodynamically and dynamically, a function represented by the biological CuI ion of the heme/Cu site. This work is significant to present a remarkable ORR electrocatalyst and to show the vital role of a second-sphere redox-active metal ion in promoting O2 binding and activation.

Neighboring Platinum Atomic Sites Activate Platinum-Cobalt Nanoclusters as High-Performance ORR/OER/HER Electrocatalysts

The rational design of efficient and multifunctional electrocatalysts for energy conversion devices is one of the major challenges for clean and renewable energy transition. Herein, the local electronic structure of cobalt-platinum nanoclusters is regulated by adjacent platinum atomic site encapsulated in N-doped hollow carbon nanotubes (PtSA -PtCo NCs/N-CNTs) by pyrolysis of melamine-orientation-induced zeolite imidazole metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-67) with thimbleful platinum doping. The introduction of melamine can reactivate adjacent carbon atoms and initiate the oriented growth of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes. The systematic analysis suggests the significant role of thimbleful neighboring low-coordinated Pt─N2 in altering the localized electronic structure of PtCo nanoclusters. The optimized PtSA -PtCo NCs/N-CNTs-900 exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER)/oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/ catalytic performance reaching the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH under the low 47 (HER) and 252 mV (OER) overpotentials, and a high half-wave potential of 0.86 and 0.89 V (ORR) in 0.1 m KOH and 0.1 m HClO4 , respectively. Remarkably, the PtSA -PtCo NC/N-CNT-900 also presents outstanding catalytic performances toward water splitting and rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The theoretical calculations reveal that optimal regulation of the electronic structure of PtCo nanoclusters by thimbleful neighboring Pt atomic reduces the reaction energy barrier in electrochemical process, facilitating the ORR/OER/HER performance.

Insight into Defect Engineering of Atomically Dispersed Iron Electrocatalysts for High-Performance Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Atomically dispersed and nitrogen coordinated iron catalysts (Fe-NCs) demonstrate potential as alternatives to platinum-group metal (PGM) catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, in the context of practical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performances of Fe-NCs remain unsatisfactory. Herein, improved MEA performance is achieved by tuning the local environment of the Fe-NC catalysts through defect engineering. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived nitrogen-doped carbon with additional CO2 activation is employed to construct atomically dispersed iron sites with a controlled defect number. The Fe-NC species with the optimal number of defect sites exhibit excellent ORR performance with a high half-wave potential of 0.83 V in 0.5 M H2 SO4 . Variation in the number of defects allows for fine-tuning of the reaction intermediate binding energies by changing the contribution of the Fe d-orbitals, thereby optimizing the ORR activity. The MEA based on a defect-engineered Fe-NC catalyst is found to exhibit a remarkable peak power density of 1.1 W cm-2 in an H2 /O2 fuel cell, and 0.67 W cm-2  in an H2 /air fuel cell, rendering it one of the most active atomically dispersed catalyst materials at the MEA level.

Advances on Axial Coordination Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for Energy Electrocatalysis: A Review

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have garnered increasingly growing attention in renewable energy scenarios, especially in electrocatalysis due to their unique high efficiency of atom utilization and flexible electronic structure adjustability. The intensive efforts towards the rational design and synthesis of SACs with versatile local configurations have significantly accelerated the development of efficient and sustainable electrocatalysts for a wide range of electrochemical applications. As an emergent coordination avenue, intentionally breaking the planar symmetry of SACs by adding ligands in the axial direction of metal single atoms offers a novel approach for the tuning of both geometric and electronic structures, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic performance at active sites. In this review, we briefly outline the burgeoning research topic of axially coordinated SACs and provide a comprehensive summary of the recent advances in their synthetic strategies and electrocatalytic applications. Besides, the challenges and outlooks in this research field have also been emphasized. The present review provides an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the axial coordination design of SACs, which could bring new perspectives and solutions for fine regulation of the electronic structures of SACs catering to high-performing energy electrocatalysis.

Atomically Dispersed FeN2 P2 Motif with High Activity and Stability for Oxygen Reduction Reaction Over the Entire pH Range

The past decade has witnessed the great potential of Fe-based single-atom electrocatalysis in catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it remains a grand challenge to substantially improve their intrinsic activity and long-term stability in acidic electrolytes. Herein, we report a facile chemical vapor deposition strategy, by which high-density Fe atoms (3.97 wt%) are coordinated with square-planar para-positioned nitrogen and phosphorus atoms in a hierarchical carbon framework. The as-crafted atomically dispersed Fe catalyst (denoted Fe-SA/PNC) manifests an outstanding activity towards ORR over the entire pH range. Specifically, the half-wave potential of 0.92 V, 0.83 V, and 0.86 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) are attained in alkaline, neutral, and acidic electrolytes, respectively, representing the high performance among reported catalysts to date. Furthermore, after 30,000 durability cycles, the Fe-SA/PNC remains to be stable with no visible performance decay when tested in 0.1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2 SO4 , and only a minor negative shift of 40 mV detected in 0.1 M HClO4 , significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C counterpart. The coordination motif of Fe-SA/PNC is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides atomic-level insight into improving the activity and stability of non-noble metal ORR catalysts, opening up an avenue to craft the desired single-atom electrocatalysts.

An Unusual Microdomain Factor Controls Interaction of Organic Halides with the Palladium Phase and Influences Catalytic Activity in the Mizoroki-Heck Reaction

In this work, using a combination of scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), the transformations of palladium-containing species in imidazolium ionic liquids in reaction mixtures of the Mizoroki-Heck reaction and in related organic media are studied to understand a challenging question of the relative reactivity of organic halides as key substrates in modern catalytic technologies. The microscopy technique detects the formation of a stable nanosized palladium phase under the action of an aryl (Ar) halide capable of forming microcompartments in an ionic liquid. For the first time, the correlation between the reactivity of the aryl halide and the microdomain structure is observed: Ar-I (well-developed microdomains) > Ar-Br (microphase present) > Ar-Cl (minor amount of microphase). Previously, it is assumed that molecular level factors, namely, carbon-halogen bond strength and the ease of bond breakage, are the sole factors determining the reactivity of aryl halides in catalytic transformations. The present work reports a new factor connected with the nature of the organic substrates used and their ability to form a microdomain structure and concentrate metallic species, highlighting the importance of considering both the molecular and microscale properties of the reaction mixtures.

Mimicking Metalloenzyme Microenvironments in the Transition Metal-Single Atom Catalysts for Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Synthesis in an Acidic Medium

Electrochemical reduction of oxygen into hydrogen peroxide in an acidic medium offers an energy-efficient and green H2 O2 synthesis as an alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. Unfortunately, high overpotential, low production rates, and fierce competition from traditional four-electron reduction limit it. In this study, a metalloenzyme-like active structure is mimicked in carbon-based single-atom electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction to H2 O2 . Using a carbonization strategy, the primary electronic structure of the metal center with nitrogen and oxygen coordination is modulated, followed by epoxy oxygen functionalities close to the metal active sites. In an acidic medium, CoNOC active structures proceed with greater than 98% H2 O2 selectivity (2e- /2H+ ) rather than CoNC active sites that are selective to H2 O (4e- /4H+ ). Among all MNOC (M = Fe, Co, Mn, and Ni) single-atom electrocatalysts, the CoNOC is the most selective (> 98%) for H2 O2 production, with a mass activity of 10 A g-1 at 0.60 V vs. RHE. X-ray absorption spectroscopy is used to identify the formation of unsymmetrical MNOC active structures. Experimental results are also compared to density functional theory calculations, which revealed that the structure-activity relationship of the epoxy-surrounded CoNOC active structure reaches optimum (ΔG*OOH ) binding energies for high selectivity.

Integrating Dual-Single-Atom Moieties with N, S Co-Coordination Configurations for Oxidative Cascaded Catalysis

Oxidation reaction is of critical importance in chemical industry, in which the primary O2 activation step still calls for high-performance catalysts. Here, a newly developed precise locating carbonization strategy for the fabrication of 21 kinds of dual-metal single-atom catalysts with N, S co-coordinated configurations is reported. As is exemplified by CoN3 S1 /CuN4 @NC, systematical characterizations and in situ observations imply the atomic CoN3 S1 and CuN4 sites immobilized on N-doped carbon, over which the remarkable electron redistribution originating from their unsymmetrical coordination configurations. Impressively, the obtained CoN3 S1 /CuN4 @NC exhibits unprecedented capability in O2 activation and enables a spontaneous process through its dynamic configuration, significantly outperforming the CoN4 /CuN4 @NC and CoN3 S1 @NC counterparts. Hence, the CoN3 S1 /CuN4 @NC shows attractive performance in domino synthesis of natural flavone and 19 kinds of derivatives from benzyl alcohol, 2'-hydroxyacetophenone, and corresponding substituted substrates via aerobic oxidative coupling-dehydrogenation. Detailed reaction mechanisms and molecule behaviors over CoN3 S1 /CuN4 @NC are also investigated through in situ experiments and simulations.

Dual-Active-Sites Single-Atom Catalysts for Advanced Applications

Dual-Active-Sites Single-Atom catalysts (DASs SACs) are not only the improvement of SACs but also the expansion of dual-atom catalysts. The DASs SACs contains dual active sites, one of which is a single atomic active site, and the other active site can be a single atom or other type of active site, endowing DASs SACs with excellent catalytic performance and a wide range of applications. The DASs SACs are categorized into seven types, including the neighboring mono metallic DASs SACs, bonded DASs SACs, non-bonded DASs SACs, bridged DASs SACs, asymmetric DASs SACs, metal and nonmetal combined DASs SACs and space separated DASs SACs. Based on the above classification, the general methods for the preparation of DASs SACs are comprehensively described, especially their structural characteristics are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the in-depth assessments of DASs SACs for variety applications including electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis and photocatalysis are provided, as well as their unique catalytic mechanism are addressed. Moreover, the prospects and challenges for DASs SACs and related applications are highlighted. The authors believe the great expectations for DASs SACs, and this review will provide novel conceptual and methodological perspectives and exciting opportunities for further development and application of DASs SACs.

Breaking Local Charge Symmetry of Iron Single Atoms for Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

The electrochemical conversion of nitrate pollutants into value-added ammonia is a feasible way to achieve artificial nitrogen cycle. However, the development of electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia reduction reaction (NO3 - RR) has been hampered by high overpotential and low Faradaic efficiency. Here we develop an iron single-atom catalyst coordinated with nitrogen and phosphorus on hollow carbon polyhedron (denoted as Fe-N/P-C) as a NO3 - RR electrocatalyst. Owing to the tuning effect of phosphorus atoms on breaking local charge symmetry of the single-Fe-atom catalyst, it facilitates the adsorption of nitrate ions and enrichment of some key reaction intermediates during the NO3 - RR process. The Fe-N/P-C catalyst exhibits 90.3 % ammonia Faradaic efficiency with a yield rate of 17980 μg h-1  mgcat -1 , greatly outperforming the reported Fe-based catalysts. Furthermore, operando SR-FTIR spectroscopy measurements reveal the reaction pathway based on key intermediates observed under different applied potentials and reaction durations. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the optimized free energy of NO3 - RR intermediates is ascribed to the asymmetric atomic interface configuration, which achieves the optimal electron density distribution. This work demonstrates the critical role of atomic-level precision modulation by heteroatom doping for the NO3 - RR, providing an effective strategy for improving the catalytic performance of single atom catalysts in different electrochemical reactions.

Cobalt nanoparticles-catalyzed aerobic oxygenation and esterification of alkynes via C≡C bonds cleavage

An unprecedented efficient protocol is developed for the oxidative cleavage of C≡C bonds in alkynes to produce structure-diverse esters using heterogeneous cobalt nanoparticles as catalyst with molecular oxygen as the oxidant. A diverse set of mono- and multisubstituted aromatic and aliphatic alkynes can be effectively cleaved and converted into the corresponding esters. Characterization analysis and control experiments indicate high surface area and pore volume, as well as nanostructured nitrogen-doped graphene-layer coated cobalt nanoparticles are possibly responsible for excellent catalytic activity. Mechanistic studies reveal that ketones derived from alkynes under oxidative conditions are formed as intermediates, which subsequently are converted to esters through a tandem sequential process. The catalyst can be recycled up to five times without significant loss of activity.

Chemical Kinetics of Metal Single Atom and Nanocluster Formation on Surfaces: An Example of Pt on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

The production of atomically dispersed metal catalysts remains a significant challenge in the field of heterogeneous catalysis due to coexistence with continuously packed sites such as nanoclusters and nanoparticles. This work presents a comprehensive guidance on how to increase the degree of atomization through a selection of appropriate experimental conditions and supports. It is based on a rigorous macro-kinetic theory that captures relevant competing processes of nucleation and formation of single atoms stabilized by point defects. The effects of metal-support interactions and deposition parameters on the resulting single atom to nanocluster ratio as well as the role of metal centers formed on point defects in the kinetics of nucleation have been established, thus paving the way to guided synthesis of single atom catalysts. The predictions are supported by experimental results on sputter deposition of Pt on exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride, as imaged by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy.

Sustainable zinc-air battery chemistry: advances, challenges and prospects

Sustainable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are considered promising energy storage devices owing to their inherent safety, high energy density, wide operating temperature window, environmental friendliness, etc., showing great prospect for future large-scale applications. Thus, tremendous efforts have been devoted to addressing the critical challenges associated with sustainable ZABs, aiming to significantly improve their energy efficiency and prolong their operation lifespan. The growing interest in sustainable ZABs requires in-depth research on oxygen electrocatalysts, electrolytes, and Zn anodes, which have not been systematically reviewed to date. In this review, the fundamentals of ZABs, oxygen electrocatalysts for air cathodes, physicochemical properties of ZAB electrolytes, and issues and strategies for the stabilization of Zn anodes are systematically summarized from the perspective of fundamental characteristics and design principles. Meanwhile, significant advances in the in situ/operando characterization of ZABs are highlighted to provide insights into the reaction mechanism and dynamic evolution of the electrolyte|electrode interface. Finally, several critical thoughts and perspectives are provided regarding the challenges and opportunities for sustainable ZABs. Therefore, this review provides a thorough understanding of the advanced sustainable ZAB chemistry, hoping that this timely and comprehensive review can shed light on the upcoming research horizons of this prosperous area.

Single-atom Iron Catalyst with Biomimetic Active Center to Accelerate Proton Spillover for Medical-level Electrosynthesis of H2 O2 Disinfectant

Electrosynthesis of H2 O2 has great potential for directly converting O2 into disinfectant, yet it is still a big challenge to develop effective electrocatalysts for medical-level H2 O2 production. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of electrocatalysts with biomimetic active centers, consisting of single atomic iron asymmetrically coordinated with both nitrogen and sulfur, dispersed on hierarchically porous carbon (FeSA -NS/C). The newly-developed FeSA -NS/C catalyst exhibited a high catalytic activity and selectivity for oxygen reduction to produce H2 O2 at a high current of 100 mA cm-2 with a record high H2 O2 selectivity of 90 %. An accumulated H2 O2 concentration of 5.8 wt.% is obtained for the electrocatalysis process, which is sufficient for medical disinfection. Combined theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations verified the rationally-designed catalytic active center with the atomic Fe site stabilized by three-coordinated nitrogen atoms and one-sulfur atom (Fe-N3 S-C). It was further found that the replacement of one N atom with S atom in the classical Fe-N4 -C active center could induce an asymmetric charge distribution over N atoms surrounding the Fe reactive center to accelerate proton spillover for a rapid formation of the OOH* intermediate, thus speeding up the whole reaction kinetics of oxygen reduction for H2 O2 electrosynthesis.

Highly Porous Polypyrrole (PPy) Hydrogel Support for the Design of a Co-N-C Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have emerged as one of the most promising platinum-group metal (PGM)-free cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Among the various approaches to enhance the ORR performance of the catalysts, increasing the density of accessible active sites is of paramount importance. Thus, nitrogen-rich support with abundant porosity can be very propitious. Herein, we report a highly porous polypyrrole (PPy) hydrogel as a versatile support for the facile design of a Co-N-C electrocatalyst for ORR. The resulting Co-N-C catalyst with abundant micro- and mesoporous combinations demonstrates a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.825 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in O2-saturated 0.1M KOH with just 2.1 wt % Co content. The ORR performance reduces only 11 mV (E1/2) after 5000 cycles of accelerated durability test (ADT), portraying its excellent stability. The catalyst retains ≈83% of its original current during a short-term durability test at 0.8 V vs RHE for 25 h. Furthermore, the catalyst shows electron transfer approaching ≈4 with low H2O2 yield in the potential range 0.5-0.9 V vs RHE. This work provides a simple design strategy to synthesize M-N-C catalysts with increased accessible active site density and enhanced mass transport for ORR and other electrocatalytic applications.

Tuning Active Metal Atomic Spacing by Filling of Light Atoms and Resulting Reversed Hydrogen Adsorption-Distance Relationship for Efficient Catalysis

Precisely tuning the spacing of the active centers on the atomic scale is of great significance to improve the catalytic activity and deepen the understanding of the catalytic mechanism, but still remains a challenge. Here, we develop a strategy to dilute catalytically active metal interatomic spacing (dM-M) with light atoms and discover the unusual adsorption patterns. For example, by elevating the content of boron as interstitial atoms, the atomic spacing of osmium (dOs-Os) gradually increases from 2.73 to 2.96 Å. More importantly, we find that, with the increase in dOs-Os, the hydrogen adsorption-distance relationship is reversed via downshifting d-band states, which breaks the traditional cognition, thereby optimizing the H adsorption and H2O dissociation on the electrode surface during the catalytic process; this finally leads to a nearly linear increase in hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Namely, the maximum dOs-Os of 2.96 Å presents the optimal HER activity (8 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline media as well as suppressed O adsorption and thus promoted stability. It is believed that this novel atomic-level distance modulation strategy of catalytic sites and the reversed hydrogen adsorption-distance relationship can shew new insights for optimal design of highly efficient catalysts.

Heteroatom-Driven Coordination Fields Altering Single Cerium Atom Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

For current single-atom catalysts (SACs), modulating the coordination environments of rare-earth (RE) single atoms with complex electronic orbital and flexible chemical states is still limited. Herein, cerium (Ce) SAs supported on a P, S, and N co-doped hollow carbon substrate (Ce SAs/PSNC) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are reported. The as-prepared Ce SAs/PSNC possesses a half-wave potential of 0.90 V, a turnover frequency value of 52.2 s-1 at 0.85 V, and excellent stability for the ORR, which exceeds the commercial Pt/C and most recent SACs. Ce SAs/PSNC-based liquid zinc-air batteries (ZABs) exhibit a high and stable open-circuit voltage of 1.49 V and a maximum power density of 212 mW cm-2 . As the catalyst of the air cathode, it also displays remarkable performance in flexible electronic devices. Theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of S and P sites induces significant electronic modulations to the Ce SA active sites. The P and S dopings promote the electroactivity of Ce SAs and improve the overall site-to-site electron transfer within the Ce SAs/PSNC. This work offers a unique perspective for modulating RE-based SACs in a complex coordination environment toward superior electrocatalysis and broad applications in energy conversion and storage devices.

Dynamic active-site induced by host-guest interactions boost the Fenton-like reaction for organic wastewater treatment

In heterogeneous catalysis, uncovering the dynamic evolution of active sites in the working conditions is crucial to realizing increased activity and enhanced stability of catalyst in Fenton-like activation. Herein, we capture the dynamic changes in the unit cell of Co/La-SrTiO₃ catalyst during the exemplary peroxymonosulfate activation process using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy, revealing the substrate tuned its structural evolution, which is the reversible stretching vibration of O-Sr-O and Co/Ti-O bonds in different orientations. This process effectively promotes the generation of key SO₅* intermediates, which is beneficial to the formation of ¹O₂ and SO₄^•- from persulfate on the Co active site. Density functional theory and X-ray absorption spectroscopy show that the optimized structural distortion enhanced the metal-oxygen bond strength by tuning the e_g orbitals and increased the number of transferred electrons to peroxymonosulfate by about 3-fold, achieving excellent efficiency and stability in removing organic pollutants.

Understanding the selection of catalytic pathway on graphene-supported nitrogen coordinated Ru-atom by ab initio molecular dynamics simulation

CONTEXT

In the paper, the ORR/OER on graphene-supported nitrogen coordinated Ru-atom (Ru-N-C) is simulated. We discuss nitrogen coordination influences electronic properties, adsorption energies, and catalytic activity in a single-atom Ru active site. The over potentials on Ru-N-C are 1.12 eV/1.00 eV for ORR/OER. We calculate Gibbs-free energy (ΔG) for every reaction step in ORR/OER process. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the catalytic process on the surface of single atom catalysts, the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations show that Ru-N-C has a structural stability at 300 K and that ORR/OER on Ru-N-C can occur along a typical four-electron process of reaction. AIMD simulations of catalytic processes provide detailed information about atom interactions.

METHODS

In this paper, we use density functional theory (DFT) with PBE functional to study the electronic properties and adsorption properties of graphene-supported nitrogen coordinated Ru-atom (Ru-N-C) Gibbs-free energy and Gibbs-free energy for very reaction step. The structural optimization and all the calculations are carried out by Dmol3 package, adopting the PNT basis set and DFT semicore pseudopotential. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) were run for 10 ps. The canonical (NVT) ensemble, massive GGM thermostat, and a temperature of 300 K are taken into account. The functional of B3LYP and the DNP basis set are chosen for AIMD.

Regulating the Coordination Geometry and Oxidation State of Single-Atom Fe Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

FeNC catalysts demonstrate remarkable activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and Zn-air batteries (ZABs). The local coordination of Fe single atoms in FeNC catalysts strongly impacts ORR activity. Herein, FeNC catalysts containing Fe single atoms sites with FeN₃ , FeN₄ , and FeN₅ coordinations are synthesized by carbonization of Fe-rich polypyrrole precursors. The FeN₅ sites possess a higher Fe oxidation state (+2.62) than the FeN₃ (+2.23) and FeN₄ (+2.47) sites, and higher ORR activity. Density functional theory calculations verify that the FeN₅ coordination optimizes the adsorption and desorption of ORR intermediates, dramatically lowering the energy barrier for OH^- desorption in the rate-limiting ORR step. A primary ZAB constructed using the FeNC catalyst with FeN₅ sites demonstrates state-of-the-art performance (an open circuit potential of 1.629 V, power density of 159 mW cm^-2 ). Results confirm an intimate structure-activity relationship between Fe coordination, Fe oxidation state, and ORR activity in FeNC catalysts.

Oxidative cleavage and ammoxidation of organosulfur compounds via synergistic Co-Nx sites and Co nanoparticles catalysis

The cleavage and functionalization of C-S bonds have become a rapidly growing field for the design or discovery of new transformations. However, it is usually difficult to achieve in a direct and selective fashion due to the intrinsic inertness and catalyst-poisonous character. Herein, for the first time, we report a novel and efficient protocol that enables direct oxidative cleavage and cyanation of organosulfur compounds by heterogeneous nonprecious-metal Co-N-C catalyst comprising graphene encapsulated Co nanoparticles and Co-Nx sites using oxygen as environmentally benign oxidant and ammonia as nitrogen source. A wide variety of thiols, sulfides, sulfoxides, sulfones, sulfonamides, and sulfonyl chlorides are viable in this reaction, enabling access to diverse nitriles under cyanide-free conditions. Moreover, modifying the reaction conditions also allows for the cleavage and amidation of organosulfur compounds to deliver amides. This protocol features excellent functional group tolerance, facile scalability, cost-effective and recyclable catalyst, and broad substrate scope. Characterization and mechanistic studies reveal that the remarkable effectiveness of the synergistic catalysis of Co nanoparticles and Co-Nx sites is crucial for achieving outstanding catalytic performance.
