Abstract
Removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) from water, especially hydrophilic and ionized ones, is challenging for water remediation. Herein, porous β-cyclodextrin polymers (PCPs) with tailored functionalization were prepared based on molecular expansion strategy and sulfonation. Partially benzylated β-cyclodextrin was knotted by external crosslinker to form PCP1, and knotting PCP1 by expansion molecule generated PCP2. PCP1 and PCP2 were sulfonated to achieve PCP1-SO3H and PCP2-SO3H. Based on systematical adsorption evaluation toward multiple categories of OMPs, it was found that the introduced strong polar -SO3H group could bring strong hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. PCP2 showed the highest surface (998.97 m2/g) displayed more excellent adsorption performance toward neutral and anionic OMPs, and the adsorption mechanism for this property of PCP2 was dominated by hydrophobic interactions. In addition, the PCP1-SO3H with the lowest surface area (39.75 m2/g) rather than PCP2-SO3H with higher surface (519.28 m2/g) exhibited more superior adsorption towards hydrophilic and cationic OMPs, benefiting by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions as well as appropriate porosity. These results not only confirmed the performance enhancement of PCPs through the integration of novel preparation strategy, but also provided fundamental guidance for PCPs design for water remediation.

Abstract
The ion extraction and electro/photo catalysis are promising methods to address environmental and energy issues. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of promising template to construct absorbents and catalysts because of their stable frameworks, high surface areas, controllable pore environments, and well-defined catalytic sites. Among them, ionic COFs as unique class of crystalline porous materials, with charges in the frameworks or along the pore walls, have shown different properties and resulting performance in these applications with those from charge-neutral COFs. In this review, current research progress based on the ionic COFs for ion extraction and energy conversion, including cationic/anionic materials and electro/photo catalysis is reviewed in terms of the synthesis strategy, modification methods, mechanisms of adsorption and catalysis, as well as applications. Finally, we demonstrated the current challenges and future development of ionic COFs in design strategies and applications.

Abstract
Since the chemical industry is largely dependent on petrol-based feedstocks, new sources are required for a sustainable industry. Conversion of biomass to high-value compounds provides an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach, which might be a potential solution to reduce petrol-based starting materials. This also applies for N-heterocycles, which are a common structural motif in natural products, pharmaceuticals and functional polymers. The synthesis of pyrroles is a well-studied and established process. Nevertheless, most routes described are not in line with the principles of green and sustainable chemistry and employ harsh reaction conditions and harmful solvents. In this study, 3,4-dihydroxyketons are used as excellent platform chemicals for the production of N-substituted pyrrole-2-carboxylic- and pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acids, as they can be prepared from glucose through the intermediate d-glucarate and converted into pyrrolic acid derivatives under mild conditions in water. The scope of this so far unknown reaction was examined using a variety of primary amines and aqueous ammonium chloride leading to pyrrolic acid derivatives with N-substituents like alkane-, alkene-, phenyl- and alcohol-groups with yields up to 20 %. The combination of both, enzymatic conversion and chemical reaction opens up new possibilities for further process development. Therefore, a continuous chemo-enzymatic system was set up by first employing an immobilized enzyme to catalyze the conversion of d-glucarate to the 3,4-dihydroxyketone, which is further converted to the pyrrolic acid derivatives by a chemical step in continuous flow.

Abstract
In this study, a novel dual Brønsted acidic-basic nano-scale porous organic polymer catalyst, PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H, was synthesized through various steps: preparation of a 3D network of polycalix, modification with (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxysilane, then functionalization of polymer with piperazine and n-butyl sulfonic acid under the provided conditions. The catalyst characterization was performed by FT-IR, TGA, EDS, elemental mapping, PXRD, TEM, and FE-SEM analyses, confirming high chemical stability, activity, recoverability, and excellent covalent anchoring of functional groups. So, the designed catalyst was utilized for preparing spiro-acenaphthylene and amino-spiroindene heterocycles, providing good performance with a high yield of the corresponding products. Accordingly, this catalyst can be used in different organic transformations. Necessary experiments were conducted for the recyclability test of the polymeric catalyst, and the results showed the PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H catalyst can be reused 10 times without any decrease in its activity or quality with excellent stability. The structure of resultant spiro heterocycles was confirmed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT-IR.

Abstract
The accumulation of organic micropollutants (OMP) in aquatic systems is a major societal problem that can be addressed by approaches including nanofiltration, flocculation, reverse osmosis and adsorptive methods using insoluble materials (e.g. activated carbon, MOFs, nanocomposites). More recently, polymeric versions of supramolecular hosts (e.g. cyclodextrins, calixarenes, pillararenes) have been investigated as OMP sequestrants. Herein, we report our study of the use of water insoluble dimethylcatechol walled acyclic cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) hosts as solid state sequestrants for a panel of five OMPs. A series of hosts (H1-H4) were synthesized by reaction of glycoluril oligomer (monomer-tetramer) with 3,6-dimethylcatechol and fully characterized by spectroscopic means and x-ray crystallography. The solid hosts sequester OMPs from water with removal efficiencies exceeding 90 % in some cases. The removal efficiencies of the new hosts parallel the known molecular recognition properties of analogous water soluble acyclic CB[n]. OMP uptake by solid host occurs rapidly (≈120 seconds). Head-to-head comparison with CB[6] in batch-mode separation and DARCO activated carbon in flow-through separation mode show that tetramer derived host (H4) performs very well under identical conditions. The work establishes insoluble acyclic CB[n]-type receptors as a promising new platform for OMP sequestration.

Abstract
We present the multiple post-modification of organic macrocycles and cages, introducing functional groups into two- and three-dimensional supramolecular scaffolds bearing fluorine substituents, which opens up new possibilities in multi-step supramolecular chemistry employing the vast chemical space of readily available isocyanates. The mechanism and scope of the reaction that proceeds after isocyanate addition to the benzylamine motif via an azadefluorination cyclisation (ADFC) were investigated using DFT calculations, and a series of aromatic isocyanates with different electronic properties were tested. The compounds show excellent chemical stability and were fully characterised. They can be used for subsequent cross-coupling reactions, and ADFC can be used directly to generate cross-linked membranes from macrocycles or cages when using ditopic isocyanates. Single-crystal X-ray (SC-XRD) analysis shows the proof of the formation of the desired supramolecular entity together with the connectivity predicted by calculations and from 19F NMR shifts, allowing the late-stage functionalisation of self-assembled macrocycles and cages by ADFC.

Abstract
The efficient removal of radioactive iodine from an aqueous solution is largely dependent on the adsorbent materials employed. In this work, we report a calix[4]pyrrole-based nanofilm and its application for the rapid removal of iodine from water. The nanofilm was synthesized through a confined dynamic condensation of tetra hydrazide calix[4]pyrrole with 1,3,5-tri-(4-formylphenyl) aldehyde at the air/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) interface. The thickness of the obtained nanofilm is ∼35 nm, enabling fast mass transfer and a high ratio of accessible binding sites for iodine. The pseudo-second-order rate constant of the nanofilm for iodine is ∼0.061 g g-1 min-1, 3 orders of magnitude higher than most reported adsorbent materials. Flow-through nanofiltration tests demonstrated that the nanofilm has an adsorption capacity of 1.48 g g-1, a high removal efficiency, and good reusability. The mechanism study revealed that the moieties of Schiff base, pyrrole, and aromatic rings play a key role for binding iodine. We believe this work provides not only a new strategy for the efficient removal of radioactive iodine from water but also new ideas for designing efficient iodine adsorbents.

Abstract
Detecting trace endocrine disruptors in water is crucial for evaluating the water quality. In this work, a innovative modified polyacrylonitrile@cyanuric chloride-triphenylphosphine nanofiber membrane (PAN@CC-TPS) was prepared by in situ growing triazine porous organic polymers on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and used in the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) to enrich trace nitrobenzene phenols (NPs) in water. The resluted PAN@CC-TPS nanofiber membrane consisted of numerous PAN nanofibers cover with CC-TPS solid spheres (∼2.50 μm) and owned abundant functional groups, excellent enrichment performance and good stability. In addition, the method based on PAN@CC-TPS displayed outstanding capacity in detecting the trace nitrobenzene phenols, with 0.50-1.00 μg/L of the quantification, 0.10-0.80 μg/L of the detection limit, 85.35-113.55 % of the recovery efficiency, and 98.08-103.02 of the enrichment factor, which was comparable to most materials. Meanwhile, when PAN@CC-TPS was adopted in the real water samples (sea water and river water), the high enrichment factors and recovery percentages strongly confirmed the feasibility of PAN@CC-TPS for enriching and detecting the trace NPs. Besides, the related mechanism of extracting NPs on PAN@CC-TPS mainly involved the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and hydrophobic effect.

Abstract
The rapid development of nuclear energy posed a great threat to the environment and human health. Herein, two hydroxyl-functionalized hyper-crosslinked polymers (PIHCP-1 and PIHCP-2) containing different electron active sites have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of the polyimides. The resulting polymers showed a micro/mesoporous morphology and good thermal and chemical stability. Rely on the high porosity and multi-active sites, the PIHCPs show an ultrahigh iodine uptake capacity reached 6.73 g g-1 and the iodine removal efficiency from aqueous solution also reaches 99.7%. Kinetic analysis demonstrates that the iodine adsorption on PIHCPs was happened on the heterogeneous surfaces in the form of multilayer chemisorption. Electrostatic potential (ESP) calculation proves the great contribution of hydroxyl groups on the iodine capture performance. In addition, the iodine capture efficiency of both adsorbents can be maintained over 91% after four cyclic experiments which ensures their good recyclability for further practical applications.

Abstract
Calix[4]pyrroles are an important class of oligopyrrolic macrocycles and have found applications in many diverse fields including anion recognition. To modulate the properties of the calix[4]pyrrole, several structural modifications are realized. The core-expansion has attracted extra attention as it provides larger cavity-size compared to parent calix[4]pyrrole(s). This review highlights the synthetic development of various core-expanded calix[4]pyrroles and their applications in anion-binding properties. Emphasis is given to the changes in the binding properties observed with expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole(s) in both solution and the solid states. The expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole do not always show higher binding affinities for larger anions as anticipated. Rather, they display reduced affinities with the anions. The truncated form or asymmetric nature of the expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole does not probably allow to access all the available binding sites for the anions and hence reduced binding affinities are observed. The receptors which contain a greater number of binding sites and are somehow rigid or preorganized apparently show enhanced binding affinities for anions. The relative binding constants for halide series indicate that the enlarged molecules are more beneficial for largest iodide among others. However, most of the receptors show selectivity towards smallest fluoride over other anions studied.

Abstract
Developing novel porous adsorbents for efficient wastewater treatment is significant to the environment protection. Herein, three porous polycalix[n]arenes (n = 4, 6, and 8) which had varying cavity sizes of the macrocycle (Azo-CX4P, Azo-CX6P, and Azo-CX8P) were prepared under mild conditions and tested for their potential application in water purification. Azo-CX8P with a larger cavity size of the macrocycle outperformed Azo-CX4P and Azo-CX6P in screening studies involving a range of organic micropollutants. It was proved that Azo-CX8P was especially efficient in the removal of cationic dyes because of its high negative surface charge. In terms of the adsorption of Rhodamine B with Azo-CX8P, the pseudo-second-order rate constant reaches 5.025 g·mg-1·min-1 with the maximum adsorption capacity being 1345 mg·g-1. These values are significantly higher compared with those recorded for most adsorbents. In addition, the easily prepared Azo-CX8P can be reused at least six times without a loss of the adsorption efficiency, demonstrating its potential use in water purification.

Abstract
Modern global industrialization along with the ever-increasing growth of the population has resulted in continuous enhancement in the discharge and accumulation of various toxic and hazardous chemicals in the environment. These harmful pollutants, including toxic gases, inorganic heavy metal ions, anthropogenic waste, persistent organic pollutants, toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds, etc., are destroying the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, systematic monitoring and effective remediation of these toxic pollutants either by adsorptive removal or by catalytic degradation are of great significance. From this viewpoint, porous organic polymers (POPs), being two- or three-dimensional polymeric materials, constructed from small organic molecules connected with rigid covalent bonds have come forth as a promising platform toward various leading applications, especially for efficient environmental remediation. Their unique chemical and structural features including high stability, tunable pore functionalization, and large surface area have boosted the transformation of POPs into various macro-physical forms such as thick and thin-film membranes, which led to a new direction in advanced level pollutant removal, separation and catalytic degradation. In this review, our focus is to highlight the recent progress and achievements in the strategic design, synthesis, architectural-engineering and applications of POPs and their composite materials toward environmental remediation. Several strategies to improve the adsorption efficiency and catalytic degradation performance along with the in-depth interaction mechanism of POP-based materials have been systematically summarized. In addition, evolution of POPs from regular powder form application to rapid and more efficient size and chemo-selective, "real-time" applicable membrane-based application has been further highlighted. Finally, we put forward our perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these materials toward real-world implementation and future prospects in next generation remediation technology.

Abstract
Herein, β-cyclodextrin-containing hybrid polymers (P1, P2 and P3) were prepared through crosslinking partially benzylated β-cyclodextrin (PBCD) by octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS). P1 stood out in screening studies and the residual hydroxyl groups of PBCD was sulfonate-functionalized. The obtained P1-SO3Na showed greatly enhanced adsorption towards cationic MPs and maintained the excellent adsorption performance towards neutral MPs. The rate constants (k2) of cationic MPs upon P1-SO3Na were 9.8-34.8 times larger than those upon P1. The equilibrium uptakes of the neutral and cationic MPs upon P1-SO3Na were above 94.5 %. Meanwhile, P1-SO3Na demonstrated appreciable adsorption capacities, excellent selectivity, effective adsorption of mixed MPs at environmental levels and good reusability. These results confirmed the great potential of P1-SO3Na as effective adsorbent to remove MPs from water.

Abstract
Toluene and xylene are volatile organic compounds, and long-term exposure to toluene and xylene may cause brain structure and nervous system damage. To evaluate exposure to toluene and xylene in the environment, it is usually possible to monitor their metabolites in organisms, hippuric acid (HA) and methylhippuric acid (MHA). In this work, we designed a new magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent, zirconium postsynthetic-modified magnetic covalent organic polymer (Fe3O4@COP-COOZr), for purifying and enriching HA and 4-MHA. Zirconium ions were immobilized on the magnetic COP surface by postsynthetic modification without the use of additional coating layers or chelating ligands. The developed Fe3O4@COP-COOZr interacted with HA and 4-MHA through the π-π stacking effect and electrostatic interactions, as well as strong chelation with coordinatively unsaturated zirconium sites. The promising affinity material of Fe3O4@COP-COOZr in MSPE had high stability and recyclability. The established MSPE-HPLC-UV method showed low sorbent consumption (10 mg) and high sensitivity (LODs less than 0.1 μg L-1), and can be used for the analysis of HA and 4-MHA in real samples. The recoveries of the proposed method in real urine samples for the simultaneous determination of HA and 4-MHA were in the range of 83.5-103.2 %, and the RSDs were 0.9-7.1 %.

Abstract
As a consequence of rapid industrialization throughout the world, various environmental pollutants have begun to accumulate in water, air, and soil. This endangers the ecological environment of the earth, and environmental remediation has become an immediate priority. Among various environmental remediation techniques, piezocatalytic techniques, which uniquely take advantage of the piezoelectric effect, have attracted much attention. Piezoelectric effects allow pollutant degradation directly, while also enhancing photocatalysis by reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent developments in piezocatalytic techniques for environmental remediation. The origin of the piezoelectric effect as well as classification of piezoelectric materials and their application in environmental remediation are systematically summarized. We also analyze the potential underlying mechanisms. Finally, urgent problems and the future development of piezocatalytic techniques are discussed.

Abstract
Developing of fast and efficient adsorbents for removal of low concentration refractory organics in water is significant. Herein, a novel calix[4]arene-based porous organic polymer CaPy is constructed through Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling polycondensation. The strong polar sulfonate is further anchored onto the polymer skeleton of CaPy and three sulfonate-modified anionic polymers CaPy-S1, CaPy-S2, and CaPy-S3 were obtained and fully characterized. The adsorption isotherms showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of CaPy, CaPy-S1, CaPy-S2, and CaPy-S3 toward methylene blue (MB) were 270, 1454, 558 and 1381 mg g-1, whereas those for Rhodamine B (RhB) were 183, 2653, 1132, and 1796 mg g-1, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity toward RhB was the highest reported vale among the currently used synthetic adsorbents. In addition, the pseudo-second-order rate constants of CaPy, CaPy-S1, CaPy-S2, and CaPy-S3 toward MB were 0.00572, 0.488, 2.24, and 0.192 g mg-1 min-1, respectively, and those toward RhB were 0.000234, 0.138, 0.0819, and 0.203 g mg-1 min-1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order rate constant of CaPy-S2 toward MB was 2.24 g mg-1 min-1 indicating one of the highest adsorption speeds. The activation energy of CaPy-S1 for RhB and MB were 121 and 109 kJ mol-1, respectively, demonstrating that the adsorption of both dyes on CaPy-S1 was chemisorption process. Further, the obtained values of Gibbs free energy were negative, revealing that the adsorption process was spontaneous. This work provides an effective approach for improving adsorption performance via post-modification.

Abstract
Wastewater containing organic pollutants with high toxicity and poor biodegradability poses a considerable threat to human health and the ecosystem. Although adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are currently the most widely used technologies for wastewater treatment, limitations of these two independent processes make the treatment effect unsatisfactory. Herein, a system of integrating adsorption and subsequent in situ AOPs is established by a 3D carbon aerogel embedded with Fe-doped carbonitrides (Fe-NC/CAG). The SEM and BET analysis demonstrate that Fe-NC/CAG possesses porous structures with a specific surface area of 518.7 m2/g. The XRD result indicates the formation of Fe0 and Fe3O4 in Fe-NC/CAG. The impacts of operational parameters such as Fe-NC/CAG dosage, pollutants concentration, temperature, initial pH, and inorganic ions on the adsorption efficiency are investigated. The adsorption kinetics is predominantly based on the pseudo-second-order model. After adsorbing organic pollutants, the Fe-NC/CAG is immersed in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) solution. The adsorbed pollutants are in situ degraded by PMS-based AOPs, leading to the regeneration of Fe-NC/CAG. At optimum conditions, the integrating process established by Fe-NC/CAG achieves over 90% removal of antibiotics, phenolics, and dyes as well as keeps stable performance even after 6 cycles. This integrating adsorption and AOPs system is expected to open up a rich field for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The toxicity, corrosiveness, and volatility of elemental bromine presents challenges for its safe storage and transportation. Purification from other halogens is also difficult. Here, we report an easy-to-prepare calix[4]pyrrole-based azo-bridged porous organic polymer (C4P-POP) that supports efficient bromine capture. C4P-POP was found to capture bromine as a vapor and from a cyclohexane source phase with maximum uptake capacities of 3.6 and 3.4 g·g-1, respectively. Flow-through adsorption experiments revealed that C4P-POP removes 80% of the bromine from a 4.0 mM cyclohexane solution at a flow rate of 45 mL·h-1. C4P-POP also allowed the selective capture of bromine from a 1:1 mixture of bromine and iodine in cyclohexane.

Abstract
Recycling precious metals from electronic waste not only benefits environmental protection, but is also favorable for alleviating resource shortages. Ionic porous organic polymers, as one type of burgeoning material, are regarded as excellent adsorbents due to their high ion density, but their application in precious metal recovery is still very limited. Here, V-PPOP-Br, a highly stable and easy-to-build cationic porous organic polymer, was successfully prepared for the first time. By linking porphyrins with viologens, V-PPOP-Br obtained the characteristics of a hierarchical porous structure, a high ion density skeleton, and a rich nitrogen content, which gave it an ultrahigh adsorption capacity (Qmax = 792.22 mg g-1) and rapid adsorption rate for Au(III). V-PPOP-Br also had an effective Au(III) recovery capability from SIM cards. Mechanism investigation confirmed that this remarkable adsorption performance was attributed to the interplay of ion exchange, redox reactions and coordination. Moreover, V-PPOP-Br had excellent recyclability and could maintain an ultrahigh adsorption efficiency of 81% after eight consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments. These excellent performances as well as the roughly calculated gold recycling economics ($37.37/g V-PPOP-Br) confirmed that it possesses promising potential as an ionic porous material for gold recovery.

Abstract
With the continuous increase of electronic products, there is an urgent need to effectively recover gold from e-waste and other secondary resources other than the original mine. Here, hypercross-linking and polyamine-functionalized porous organic polymers (Pc-POSS-POP) were designed and facially synthesized based on multiple azo-coupling polymerizations between 2,9,16,23-tetraaminophthalocyanine (H2Pc(NH2)4) and octa(aminophenyl)-t8-silsesquioxane (OAPS) for the first time. The reaction requires no metal as a catalyst, thereby benefiting the purification of the product and the industrial scalability. Pc-POSS-POPs possess a hypercross-linking structure, highly conjugated frameworks, nitrogen-rich active sites, and extensively visible and near-infrared light absorption, which was utilized as an absorbent to retrieve Au (III). The results demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs have a high adsorption capacity (862.07 mg g-1) and a rapid adsorption rate toward gold recycling. The maximum adsorption capacity could reach up to 1026.87 mg g-1 as in the case of light irradiation. Due to the strong N coordination sites and the electronic interaction between the -NH4+ groups of Pc-POSS-POPs and AuCl4-, Pc-POSS-POPs also exhibited excellent selectivity toward gold over several coordinated metals [Cr (VI), Co (II), Cd (II), Ni (II), and Hg (II)]. These properties together with the good regenerative ability and superior recyclability demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs possess promising potential as hypercross-linking polymers for capturing and recycling of Au (III).

Abstract
Nanostructured hypercrosslinked porous organic polymers have triggered immense research interest for a broad spectrum of applications ranging from catalysis to molecular separation. However, it still remains a challenge to tune their nanoscale morphology. Herein, we demonstrated a remarkable variation of morphologies of triptycene-based hypercrosslinked microporous polymers starting from irregular aggregates (FCTP) to rigid spheres (SCTP) to two-dimensional nanosheets (SKTP) from three distinct polymerization methodologies, Friedel-Crafts knitting using an external crosslinker, Scholl reaction, and solvent knitting, respectively. Further, the dramatic role of reaction temperatures, catalysts, and solvents resulting in well-defined morphologies was elucidated. Mechanistic investigations coupled with microscopic and computational studies revealed the evolution of 2D nanosheets of a highly porous solvent-knitted polymer (SKTP, 2385 m2 g-1), resulting from the sequential hierarchical self-assembly of nanospheres and nanoribbons. A structure-activity correlation of hypercrosslinked polymers and their sulfonated counterparts for the removal of toxic polar organic micropollutants from water was delineated based on the chemical functionalities, specific surface area, pore size distribution, dispersity, and nanoscale morphology. Furthermore, a sulfonated 2D sheet-like solvent-knitted polymer (SKTPS) exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics (within 30 s) for a large array of polar organic micropollutants, including plastic components, steroids, antibiotic drugs, herbicides, and pesticides with remarkable uptake capacity and excellent recyclability. The current study provides the impetus for designing morphology-controlled functionalized porous polymers for task-specific applications.

Abstract
Preorganization is a key concept in supramolecular chemistry. Preorganized receptors enhance binding by minimizing the organization costs associated with adopting the conformation needed to orient the binding sites toward the guest. Conversely, poorly organized receptors show affinities below what is possible based on the potential of their specific binding interactions. Despite the fact that the organization energy is paid each time like a tax, its value has never been measured directly, though many compounds have been developed to measure its effects. We present a method to quantify the hidden costs of receptor organization by independently measuring the contribution it makes to chloride complexation by a flexible foldameric receptor. This method uses folding energy to approximate organization energy and relies on measurement of the coil-helix equilibrium as a function of solvent. We also rely on the finding, established with rigid receptors, that affinity is inversely related to the solvent dielectric and expect the same for the foldamer's helically organized state. Increasing solvent polarity across nine dichloromethane-acetonitrile mixtures we see an unusual V-shape in affinity (decrease then increase). Quantitatively, this shape arises from weakened hydrogen-bonding interactions with solvent polarity followed by solvent-driven folding into an organized helix. We confirm that dielectric screening impacts the stability of host-guest complexes of flexible foldamers just like rigid receptors. These results experimentally verify the canonical model of binding (affinity depends on the sum of organization and noncovalent interactions). The picture of how solvent impacts complex stability and conformational organization thereby helps lay the groundwork for de novo receptor design.

Abstract
Preparation of nanofilms which are able to reject water-soluble low molecular weight organic compounds in nanofiltration remains to be a challenge. Herein, we report a new kind of self-standing, defect-free, robust, centimeter-sized and thickness controllable calix[4]pyrrole (C[4]P)-based nanofilms with excellent molecular sieving performance in nanofiltration. The nanofilms were prepared via confined dynamic condensation of the tetra-benzoyl-hydrazine derivative of calix[4]pyrrole (CPTBH) with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde (BTC) at the air/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) interface. Nanofiltration tests under 2 bar pressure with porous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the support and a CsF treated CPTBH-BTC nanofilm (∼100 nm) as the selective layer depicted a water permeance of 15 L m-2h-1 bar-1 and a methanol permeance of 45 L m-2h-1 bar-1. High rejection rates (>95%) were found in aqueous solution for most of the tested dyes and pharmaceuticals. Remarkably, the composite membrane also demonstrated good separation performance in aqueous phase to some amino acids and organic dyes with molecular weights around 200 g/mol. High-performance nanofiltration in methanol was also realized. In this case, the molecular weight cutoff value is ∼ 800 g/mol. These findings showed that introduction of macrocyclic hosts is an effective way to develop nanofilms with high solvent permeance but low molecular weight cutoff value.

Abstract
A series of calix[4]pyrrole-based crosslinked polymer networks designed for iodine capture is reported. These materials were prepared by Sonogashira coupling of α,α,α,α-tetra(4-alkynylphenyl)calix[4]pyrrole with bishalide building blocks with different electronic properties and molecular sizes. Despite their low Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas, iodine vapor adsorption capacities of up to 3.38 g g-1 were seen, a finding ascribed to the presence of a large number of effective sorption sites including macrocyclic π-rich cavities, aryl units, and alkyne groups within the material. One particular system, C[4]P-BTP, was found to be highly effective at iodine capture from water (uptake capacity of 3.24 g g-1 from a concentrated aqueous KI/I2 solution at ambient temperature). Fast capture kinetics (kobs =7.814 g g-1 min-1 ) were seen. Flow-through adsorption experiments revealed that C[4]P-BTP is able to remove 93.2 % of iodine from an aqueous source phase at a flow rate of 1 mL min-1 .

Abstract
A new simple method for the synthesis of 2-ethynylphenyl(diaryl)phosphine oxides via ring opening of benzophosphol-3-yl triflates has been developed. This process occurs via nucleophilic attack of a Grignard reagent at the phosphorus center, which results in ring opening and cleavage of a leaving group. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and, within 15-60 min, leads to a library of previously unavailable 2-ethynylphenylphosphine oxides in yields up to 98%.

Abstract
Diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles (DPP) are high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. They have applications in solar cells, fluorescent probes, bioimaging, photodynamic/photothermal therapy, and in many other areas. This article reports a convenient two-step synthesis of various DPP dyes from Pigment Red 254, an inexpensive commercial pigment. The synthesis includes a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of a bis(4-chlorophenyl)DPP derivative with aryl and hetaryl boronic acids under mild reaction conditions. The new dyes show large Stokes shifts and high fluorescence quantum yields, important features for their potential use in technical and biological applications.

Abstract
It is challenging to remove polar organic micropollutants from water through adsorption-mediated processes. Macrocycle-crosslinked polymers were recently shown to be effective adsorbents for nonpolar or charged organic micropollutants through specific host-guest binding, but are rarely used for the treatment of neutral and polar organic micropollutants. This is due to the challenge of recognizing polar molecules in water by macrocyclic hosts. In this research, we report two amide naphthotube-crosslinked polymers which can effectively and rapidly adsorb a wide scope of polar organic micropollutants from water through biomimetic molecular recognition. Amide naphthotubes possess hydrogen bonding sites in their deep hydrophobic cavities and can effectively bind polar organic micropollutants in water through the hydrophobic effects and shielded hydrogen bonds. The cross-linked polymers containing amide naphthotubes are even able to remove a complex mixture of organic micropollutants from water and the used materials can be easily regenerated through washing with MeOH or EtOH. This research provides a solution for the treatment of polar organic micropollutants by using biomimetic molecular recognition in water.
