An Element-Substituted Cyclobutadiene Exhibiting High-Energy Blue Phosphorescence

Isolation of Fluorescent 2π-Aromatic 1,3-Disiladiboretenes

Herein, we reported the isolation of 2π-aromatic disiladiboretenes (L2Si2B2Ph2) [L = ArC(NtBu)2, Ar = Ph (1), Mes (2)], which have been synthesized from the straightforward reduction of silylene-borane adducts (LSiX → BX2Ph) [X = Cl, Br] with potassium graphite (KC8). X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 revealed that the Si2B2 units are completely planar, and DFT calculations suggested delocalization of 2π-electrons over the Si2B2 rings. Moreover, their photophysical properties and reactivity toward sulfur were also investigated in detail.

Photophysical properties of four-membered BN3 heterocyclic compounds: theoretical insights

CONTEXT

Understanding the photochemistry of boron nitrogen (BN)-containing compounds is an important aspect to enhance the various optical and electronic applications. In this work, we have explored the structure, bonding, reactivity, electronic absorption (UV-Vis), and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) of a series of BN3 ring and open-chain systems. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMO) analysis found that ring systems have a low HOMO-LUMO energy gap as compared to the open-chain systems which insinuates the feasibility of ring systems in the optoelectronic materials. Also, the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps have been computed to pursue the electrophilic and nucleophilic sites available at the surface of the compound. Interestingly, we have found that the open-chain compounds show more molecular charge distribution range rather than the ring compounds. The investigation of photophysical properties showed that the UV-Vis absorption significantly red-shifted in BN3 ring systems as compared to open-chain counterparts. Furthermore, light harvesting efficiency (LHE) was also found higher in the ring systems as compared to the BN3 open-chain systems. Moreover, the computed structural parameters are found well corroborated with the available X-ray data.

METHODS

Structures of all compounds were optimized by using density functional theory (DFT) method, with M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level. All the calculations in this work are carried out in Gaussian 16 program package. GaussView6.1 software was used for the modeling of initial geometries and for the plotting of MEP plots. To account the solvent effect on geometries the polarized continuum model (PCM) was used and tetrahydrofuran (THF) taken as solvent. The NBO6.0 program (incorporated in G16 software) was used for the exploration of bonding nature and stabilization energies of B-N bond. The absorption spectra were simulated by using ORCA 4.2 program.

Double-bond delocalization in non-alternant hydrocarbons induces inverted singlet-triplet gaps

Molecules where the first excited singlet state is lower in energy than the first excited triplet state have the potential to revolutionize OLEDs. This inverted singlet-triplet gap violates Hund's rule and currently there are only a few molecules which are known to have this property. Here, we screen the complete set of non-alternant hydrocarbons consisting of 5-, 6-, 7-membered rings fused into two-, three- and four-ring polycyclic systems. We identify several molecules where the symmetry of the ground-state structure is broken due to bond-length alternation. Through symmetry-constrained optimizations we identify several molecular cores where the singlet-triplet gap is inverted when the structure is in a higher symmetry, pentalene being a known example. We uncover a strategy to stabilize the molecular cores into their higher-symmetry structures with electron donors or acceptors. We design several substituted pentalenes, s-indacenes, and indeno[1,2,3-ef]heptalenes with inverted gaps, among which there are several synthetically known examples. In contrast to known inverted gap emitters, we identify the double-bond delocalized structure of their conjugated cores as the necessary condition to achieve the inverted gap. This strategy enables chemical tuning and paves the way for the rational design of polycyclic hydrocarbons with inverted singlet-triplet gaps. These molecules are prospective emitters if their properties can be optimized for use in OLEDs.

Synthesis and Properties of B4 N4 -Heteropentalenes Fused with Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

Hybrid molecules of π-conjugated carbon rings and BN-heterocyclic rings (h-CBNs) fused with each other have been a rare class of compounds due to the limited availability of their synthetic methods. Here we report the synthesis of new h-CBNs featuring a B₄ N₄ -heteropentalene core and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon wings. Using 1,2-azaborinine derivatives as a building block, we developed a rational synthetic protocol that allows the formation of a B₄ N₄ ring in a stepwise manner, resulting in the fully fused ABA-type triblock molecules. Thus, three derivatives of 1 bearing naphthalene (1_Naph ), anthracene (1_Anth ), or phenanthrene (1_Phen ) wings fused with the B₄ N₄ core were synthesized and characterized. Among them, 1_Phen , which displays the highest triplet-state energy, was found to serve a host material for phosphorescent OLED devices, for which a maximum external quantum efficiency of 13.7 % was recorded. These findings may promote the synthesis of various types of h-CBNs aiming at new properties arising from the synergy of two different π-electronic systems.

Dynamic B/N Lewis Pairs: Insights into the Structural Variations and Photochromism via Light-Induced Fluorescence to Phosphorescence Switching

Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τ_RTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Haptotropism in a Nickel Complex with a Neutral, π-Bridging cyclo-P4 Ligand Analogous to Cyclobutadiene

Dedicated to Professor Manfred Scheer on the occasion of his 65th birthday The reaction of (1)Ni(η2 -cod), 2, incorporating a chelating bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) 1, with P4 in pentane yielded the dinuclear complex [(2)Ni]2 (μ2 ,η2  : η2 -P4 ), 3, formally featuring a cyclobutadiene-like, neutral, rectangular, π-bridging P4 -ring. In toluene, the butterfly-shaped complex [(1)Ni]2 (μ2 ,η2  : η2 -P2 ), 4, with a formally neutral P2 -unit was obtained from 2 and either P4 or 3. Computational studies showed that a haptotropic rearrangement involving two isomers of the μ2 ,η2  : η2 -P4 coordination mode and a low-energy μ2 ,η4  : η4 -P4 coordination mode, as previously predicted for related nickel cyclobutadiene complexes, could explain the coalescence observed in the low-temperature NMR spectra of 3. The insertion of the (1)Ni fragment into a P-P bond of P7 (SiMe3 )3 , forming complex 5 with a norbornane-like P7 ligand, was also observed.

The hidden aromaticity in borazine

The aromaticity of borazine (B3N3H6), also known as the inorganic benzene, is a controversial issue since this compound has several characteristics that could qualify it as an aromatic compound. However, recent studies using magnetic criteria indicate that this compound should be considered as a non-aromatic system. This assignment is mainly due to diatropic currents in the nitrogen atoms without observation of ring currents. The present work shows by means of the magnetic criteria that borazine has a ring current hidden by the local contributions of degenerate orbitals π1 and π2. Additionally, the study of borazine's first triplet state antiaromaticity using the magnetic and energetic criteria by means of isomerization stabilization energies (ISEs) together with Baird's and Hückel's rules suggests that borazine is best described as an (weakly) aromatic system.

Tunable Fluorescence and Afterglow in Organic Crystals for Temperature Sensing

The modulation of the properties of emission from multiple emission states in a single-component organic luminescent material is highly desirable in data anticounterfeiting, information storage, and bioapplications. Here, a single-component luminescent organic crystal of difluoroboron diphenyl β-diketonate with controllable multiple emission colors is successfully reported. The temperature-dependent luminescence experiments supported by high-level theoretical calculations demonstrate that the ratio of the fluorescence between the monomer and excimer and the phosphorescence maxima of the excimer can be effectively regulated. In addition, the temperature-dependent fluorescence and afterglow dual-emission color changes provide a new strategy for the design of highly accurate double-checked temperature sensors.

Synthesis of Four-Membered BN3 Heterocycles by the Borylation of Triazenes

Borylated triazenes were synthesized by the dehydrocoupling of triazenes with 9-borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane, by the condensation of triazenes with BEt₃, or by the reaction of sodium triazenides with dialkyl- or diarylboron halides. The structures of the products were found to depend on the size of the substituents. Sterically demanding mesityl groups at boron or nitrogen gave rise to open-chain structures, whereas smaller substituents led to the formation of novel BN₃ heterocycles.

Tunable Second-Level Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Solid Supramolecules between Acrylamide-Phenylpyridium Copolymers and Cucurbit[7]uril

A series of solid supramolecules based on acrylamide-phenylpyridium copolymers with various substituent groups (P-R: R=-CN, -CO₂ Et, -Me, -CF₃ ) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) are constructed to exhibit tunable second-level (from 0.9 s to 2.2 s) room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the amorphous state. Compared with other solid supramolecules P-R/CB[7] (R=-CN, -CO₂ Et, -Me), P-CF₃ /CB[7] displays the longest lifetime (2.2 s), which is probably attributed to the fluorophilic interaction of cucurbiturils leading to a uncommon host-guest interaction between 4-phenylpyridium with -CF₃ and CB[7]. Furthermore, the RTP solid supramolecular assembly (donors) can further react with organic dyes Eosin Y or SR101 (acceptors) to form ternary supramolecular systems featuring ultralong phosphorescence energy transfer (PpET) and visible delayed fluorescence (yellow for EY at 568 nm and red for SR101 at 620 nm). Significantly, the ultralong multicolor PpET supramolecular assembly can be further applied in fields of anti-counterfeiting and information encryption and painting.
