Coupling Electrocatalytic Nitric Oxide Oxidation over Carbon Cloth with Hydrogen Evolution Reaction for Nitrate Synthesis

Hydrogen Peroxide Heterolytic Cleavage Induced Gas Phase Photo-Fenton Oxidation of Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the major air pollutants that may cause ecological imbalance and severe human disease. However, the removal of NO faces challenges of low efficiency, high energy consumption, and production of toxic NO2 byproducts. Herein, we report an efficient *OOH intermediate-involved NO oxidation route with high NO3- selectivity via a gas phase photo-Fenton system. Fe single atoms (Fe SAs)-anchored NH2-UiO-66(Zr) (Fe SAs@NU) was synthesized. The five-coordinated Fe SAs undergo a transient structure reconstitution during the photo-Fenton process, which enables a novel heterolytic cleavage pathway of H2O2 to derive specific ·OOH/·O2- radicals as reactive oxygen species. Therefore, a high NO (550 parts per billion) removal rate of 81% (NO3- selectivity up to 99%) is achieved under visible-light irradiation (>420 nm). This study provides new insight for the high-performance photo-Fenton process via a transient structure reconstitution pathway for the removal of gas phase NOx pollutants.

Integrated electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonium nitrate from dilute NO gas on metal organic frameworks-modified gas diffusion electrodes

The electrocatalytic conversion of NO offers a promising technology for not only removing the air pollutant but also synthesizing valuable chemicals. We design an integrated-electrocatalysis cell featuring metal organic framework (MOF)-modified gas diffusion electrodes for simultaneous capture of NO and generation of NH4NO3 under low-concentration NO flow conditions. Using 2% NO gas, the modified cathode exhibits a higher NH4+ yield and Faradaic efficiency than an unmodified cathode. Notably, the modified cathode shows a twofold increase in NH4+ production with 20 ppm NO gas supply. Theoretical calculations predict favorable transfer of adsorbed NO from the adsorption layer to the catalyst layer, which is experimentally confirmed by enhanced NO mass transfer from gas to electrolyte across the modified electrode. The adsorption layer-modified anode also exhibits a higher NO3- yield for NO electro-oxidation compared to the unmodified electrode under low NO concentration flow. Among various integrated-cell configurations, a single-chamber setup produces a higher NH4NO3 yield than a double-chamber setup. Furthermore, a higher NO utilization efficiency is obtained with a single-gasline operation mode, where the NO-containing gas flows sequentially from the cathode to the anode.

Blocking Metal Nanocluster Growth through Ligand Coordination and Subsequent Polymerization: The Case of Ruthenium Nanoclusters as Robust Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding hydrogen evolution activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. Herein, a possibility of blocking metal ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation to produce highly active Ru nanoclusters supported on an N, S co-doped carbon matrix (Ru/NSC) is demonstrated. To stabilize the nanocluster dispersion, Ru species are initially coordinated through multiple Ru─N bonds with N-rich 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2:6',2''-terpyridine (TPY-NH2) ligands that are subsequently polymerized using a Schiff base. After the pyrolysis of the hybrid composite, highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoclusters with an average size of 1.55 nm are obtained. The optimized Ru/NSC displays minimal overpotentials and high turnover frequencies, as well as robust durability both in alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Besides, outstanding mass activities of 3.85 A mg-1 Ru at 50 mV, i.e., 16 fold higher than 20 wt.% Pt/C are reached. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the outstanding performance by revealing that the low d-band center of Ru/NSC allows the desorption of *H intermediates, thereby enhancing the alkaline HER activity. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to engineering cost-effective and robust electrocatalysts based on carbon-supported transition metal nanoclusters for future energy technologies.

Selective Electrocatalytic Conversion of Nitric Oxide to High Value-Added Chemicals

The artificial disturbance in the nitrogen cycle has necessitated an urgent need for nitric oxide (NO) removal. Electrochemical technologies for NO conversion have gained increasing attention in recent years. This comprehensive review presents the recent advancements in selective electrocatalytic conversion of NO to high value-added chemicals, with specific emphasis on catalyst design, electrolyte composition, mass diffusion, and adsorption energies of key intermediate species. Furthermore, the review explores the synergistic electrochemical co-electrolysis of NO with specific carbon source molecules, enabling the synthesis of a range of valuable chemicals with C─N bonds. It also provides in-depth insights into the intricate reaction pathways and underlying mechanisms, offering valuable perspectives on the challenges and prospects of selective NO electrolysis. By advancing comprehension and fostering awareness of nitrogen cycle balance, this review contributes to the development of efficient and sustainable electrocatalytic systems for the selective synthesis of valuable chemicals from NO.

Spatial decoupling of bromide-mediated process boosts propylene oxide electrosynthesis

The electrochemical synthesis of propylene oxide is far from practical application due to the limited performance (including activity, stability, and selectivity). In this work, we spatially decouple the bromide-mediated process to avoid direct contact between the anode and propylene, where bromine is generated at the anode and then transferred into an independent reactor to react with propylene. This strategy effectively prevents the side reactions and eliminates the interference to stability caused by massive alkene input and vigorously stirred electrolytes. As expected, the selectivity for propylene oxide reaches above 99.9% with a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 91% and stability of 750-h (>30 days). When the electrode area is scaled up to 25 cm2, 262 g of pure propylene oxide is obtained after 50-h continuous electrolysis at 6.25 A. These findings demonstrate that the electrochemical bromohydrin route represents a viable alternative for the manufacture of epoxides.

Laser-Treated MXene as an Electrochemical Agent to Boost Properties of Semitransparent Photoelectrode Based on Titania Nanotubes

In this study, Ti3C2Tx underwent laser treatment to reshape it, resulting in the formation of a TiO2/Ti3C2Tx heterojunction. The interaction with laser light induced the formation of spherical TiO2 composed of an anatase-rutile phase on the Ti3C2Tx surface. Such a heterostructure was loaded over a titania nanotube (TNT) layer, and the surface area was enhanced through immersion in a TiCl4 solution followed by thermal treatment. Consequently, the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency exhibits a 10-fold increase as compared to bare TNT. Moreover, for the sample produced with optimized conditions, five times higher photoactivity is observed in comparison to bare TNT. It was shown that under visible light irradiation the most photoactive heterojunction based on the tubular layer reveals a substantial drop in the charge transfer resistance of about 32% with respect to the dark condition. This can be attributed to the narrower band gaps of the modified material and improvement of the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Overall results suggest that this investigation underscores TiO2/Ti3C2Tx as a promising noble-metal-free material that enhances both the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical performances of electrode materials based on TNT that can be further used in light-harvesting applications.

Synergy of Pd2+/S2--Doped TiO2 Supported on 2-Methylimidazolium-Functionalized Polypyrrole/Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Nitrogen Electrooxidation

The electrosynthesis of nitrate catalyzed by electrochemical nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) is considered as an alternative and sustainable approach to the conventional industrial manufacture, but optimizing the electrocatalytic NOR performance and fabricating the efficient NOR electrocatalysts at the design level still encounter great challenges. Herein, unique Pd2+- and S2--doped TiO2 (Pb/S-TiO2) nanoparticles are successfully in situ grown on the surface of 2-methylimidazolium-functionalized polypyrrole/graphene oxide (2-MeIm/PPy/GO), which present the typical hierarchical micro-nanostructures, resulting in the excellent electrocatalytic NOR performance with the highest NO3 - yield of 72.69 µg h-1 mg-1 act. and the maximum Faraday efficiency of 8.92% at 2.04 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) due to the synergistic effect of each component. Due to the doping effect, the appropriate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity is achieved by Ti-site, where OER principally occurs, providing *O during the non-electrochemical step of NOR, while the electrocatalytic NOR process as the electrochemical conversion of inert N2 to active *NO intermediates mainly occurs at the Pd-site. Especially, the sulfate radicals in situ formed on Pb/S-TiO2@2-MeIm/PPy/GO further promote nitrogen adsorption and decrease the reaction energy barrier, resulting in the acceleration of NOR. It provides theoretical and practical experience for the design and preparation of NOR electrocatalysts.

Recent Progress in Modular Electrochemical Synthesis of Hydrogen and High-Value-added Chemicals based on Solid Redox Mediator

Electrochemical synthesis of H2 and high-value-added chemicals is an efficient and cost-effective approach that can be powered using renewable electricity. Compared to a conventional electrochemical production system, the modular electrochemical production system (MEPS) based on a solid redox mediator (SRM) can separate the anodic and cathodic reactions in time and space. The MEPS can avoid the use of membranes and formation of useless products, as well as eliminate the mutual dependence of production rates at anode and cathode. The SRM can temporarily store or release electrons and ions to pair with cathodic and anodic reactions, respectively, in MEPS. Designing of SRMs with large charge capacity and good cyclability is of great significance for constructing a high-performance MEPS. This work summarizes the design principles, recent advances in MEPS based on SRM, and application in redox flow cells. Moreover, structure design strategies as well as in situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations for SRM is also proposed. It is expected to promote the vigorous development of MEPS based on SRM. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of MEPS based on SRM are discussed.

Controllable Assembly of Highly Oxidized Cobalt on Graphdiyne Surface for Efficient Conversion of Nitrogen into Nitric Acid

The manufacture of nitric acid (HNO3 ) consumes large amounts of energy and causes serious environmental pollution. Electrochemical synthesis is regarded as a key way to eliminate carbon emissions from the chemicals industry. The selective electrosynthesis of HNO3 from nitrogen was achieved by controllable assembly of cobalt metal on graphdiyne surface using a powerful tool of electrochemistry at ambient conditions. As an advanced material, graphdiyne (GDY) has a large conjugated structure on its surface and is rich in sp-C triple bond skeleton, which can achieve strong interaction with metal atoms, resulting in incomplete charge transfer between graphdiyne and cobalt atoms. The experimental and theoretical calculation results show that the highly oxidized cobalt on graphdiyne (HOCo/GDY) can selectively and efficiently activate and convert the nitrogen into the key intermediate *NO, which promotes the efficient overall conversion performance of nitrogen to nitric acid. Thus, the highest nitric acid yield (192.0 μg h-1  mg-1 ) and Faradaic efficiency (21.5 %) were achieved at low potentials.

Enhancement of Pt-O Synergistic Sites through Titanium Vacancies for Low-Temperature Nitrogen Oxide Reduction

Improving the reaction rate of each step is significant for accelerating the multistep reaction of NO reduction by H2. However, simultaneously enhancing the activation of different gaseous reactants using single-atom catalysts remains a challenge to maximize the activity. Herein, we propose a strategy that utilizes titanium-vacancy-regulated electronic properties of single atoms and defective support (Pt1/d-TiO2) to facilitate electron transfer from edge-share O atoms (OTi) to adjacent Pt single atoms. This leads to the formation of low-valence Pt and unsaturated-charge OTi sites, which causes the catalytic reaction to follow a synergistic mechanism. Specifically, experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate that low-valence Pt sites finely tune the adsorption of H2 molecules, consequently lowering the dissociation energy from 0.15 to as low as 0.01 eV. Moreover, using quasi-in situ spectroscopy, we clearly observe NO molecules being adsorbed on interfacial oxygen sites of a defective support. Then, the bond energy of the N-O bond is weakened through an electron acceptance-donation mechanism between unsaturated-charge OTi sites and NO, thereby facilitating NO activation. The designed single-atom catalysts with synergistic sites exhibit unmatched activity at low temperatures (above 90% NOx conversion at 100 °C), along with higher turnover frequency value (0.74 s-1) and superior stability, making them potentially suitable for industrial applications.

Immobilization of zinc and cadmium by biochar-based sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron in a co-contaminated soil: Performance, mechanism, and microbial response

Mining and smelting of mineral resources causes excessive accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in surrounding soils. Here, biochar-based sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (SNZVI/BC) was designed via a one-step liquid phase reduction method to immobilize cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in a copolluted arable soil. A 60 d soil incubation experiment revealed that Cd and Zn immobilization efficiency by 6 % SNZVI/BC (25.2-26.2 %) was higher than those by individual SNZVI (13.9-18.0 %) or biochar (14.0-19.3 %) based on the changes in diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable PTM concentrations in soils, exhibiting a synergistic effect. Cd2+ or Zn2+ replaced isomorphously Fe2+ in amorphous ferrous sulfide, as revealed by XRD, XPS, and high-resolution TEM-EDS, forming metal sulfide precipitates and thus immobilizing PTMs. PTM immobilization was further enhanced by adsorption by biochar and oxidation products (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) of SNZVI via precipitation and surface complexation. SNZVI/BC also increased the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and soil pH, thus stimulating the abundances of beneficial bacteria, i.e., Bacilli, Clostridia, and Desulfuromonadia. These functional bacteria further facilitated microbial Fe(III) reduction, production of ammonium and available potassium, and immobilization of PTMs in soils. The predicted function of the soil microbial community was improved after supplementation with SNZVI/BC. Overall, SNZVI/BC could be a promising functional material that not only immobilized PTMs but also enhanced available nutrients in cocontaminated soils.

Electrochemically-mediated reactive separation of nitric oxide into nitrate using iron chelate

Valorization of nitric oxide is a promising solution for addressing the environmental and resource issues related to the nitrogen cycle. However, low concentrations of nitric oxide combined with impurities in exhaust streams limit its potential, and it requires extensive energy to produce high-purity nitric oxide. Here, we propose a synergistic reactive separation system that combines iron-chelate selective absorption with an electrochemical reaction to convert nitric oxide to nitrate. Among the iron-based chelates tested, EDTA was found to be the most effective in capturing gas-phase nitric oxide. Direct electrochemical oxidation of Fe-EDTA-NO solution exhibited Faradaic efficiency and a partial current density toward nitrate of 70% and 30.1 mA cm-2 at 2.2 V vs RHE and pH 7, resulting in a 43-fold enhancement of nitrate partial current density and a 2-fold improvement in Faradaic efficiency compared to simple purging without selective absorbent. Nitrate was then selectively recovered from the Fe-EDTA system using simple polarity reversal following electrooxidation with a separation factor of 13 over background sulfate. This study offers a new approach to gas-phase NO remediation and valorization using an electrified means.

Identifying And Unveiling the Role of Multivalent Metal States for Bidirectional UOR and HER Over Ni, Mo-Trithiocyanuric Based Coordination Polymer

Urea oxidation reaction (UOR), an ideal alternative to oxygen evolution reaction (OER), has received increasing attention for realizing energy-saving H2 production and relieving pollutant degradation. Normally, most studied Ni-based UOR catalysts pre-oxidate to NiOOH and then act as active sites. However, the unpredictable transformation of the catalyst's structure and its dissolution and leaching, may complicate the accuracy of mechanism studies and limit its further applications. Herein, a novel self-supported bimetallic Mo-Ni-C3 N3 S3 coordination polymers (Mo-NT@NF) with strong metal-ligand interactions and different H2 O/urea adsorption energy are prepared, which realize a bidirectional UOR/hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reaction pathway. A series of Mo-NT@NF is prepared through a one-step mild solvothermal method and their multivalent metal states and HER/UOR performance relationship is evaluated. Combining catalytic kinetics, in situ electrochemical spectroscopic characterization, and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, a bidirectional catalytic pathway is proposed by N, S-anchored Mo5+ and reconstruction-free Ni3+ sites for catalytic active center of HER and UOR, respectively. The effective anchoring of the metal sites and the fast transfer of the intermediate H* by N and S in the ligand C3 N3 S3 H3 further contribute to the fast kinetic catalysis. Ultimately, the coupled HER||UOR system with Mo-NT@NF as the electrodes can achieve energy-efficient overall-urea electrolysis for H2 production.

Efficient purification of a nitrate and chlorate mixture in water via photoredox activated intermediate coupling-decoupling pathway

Nitrate (NO3-) is a widespread contaminant that threatens human health and ecological safety. Meanwhile, the disinfection byproducts chlorate (ClO3-) is generated inevitably in conventional wastewater treatment. Therefore, the contaminants mixture of NO3- and ClO3- are universal in common emission units. Photocatalysis technology is a feasible approach for the synergistic abatement of contaminant mixture, where matching suitable oxidation reactions is a potential strategy to improve the photocatalytic reduction reactions. Herein, formate (HCOOH) oxidation is introduced to facilitate the photocatalytic reduction of the NO3- and ClO3- mixture. As a result, high purification efficiency of NO3- and ClO3- mixture are achieved, evidenced by 84.6% e--dependent removal of the mixture at a reaction time of 30 min, with 94.5% N2 selectivity and 100% Cl- selectivity, respectively. Specifically, by the close combination of in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations, the detailed reaction mechanism is revealed, in which the intermediate coupling-decoupling route from NO3- reduction and HCOOH oxidation is established by the chlorate-induced photoredox activation, leading to the significantly enhanced efficiency for the wastewater mixture purification. The practical application of this pathway is established for simulated wastewater to show its wide applicability. This work provides new insights into photoredox catalysis technology for its environmental application.

Oxygen-Bridged Copper-Iron Atomic Pair as Dual-Metal Active Sites for Boosting Electrocatalytic NO Reduction

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to ammonia (NH3 ) is a promising approach to NH3 synthesis. However, due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts, the performance of electrocatalytic NO reduction reaction (NORR) is far from satisfactory. Herein, it is reported that an atomic copper-iron dual-site electrocatalyst bridged by an axial oxygen atom (OFeN6 Cu) is anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (CuFe DS/NC) for NORR. The CuFe DS/NC can significantly enhance the electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis performance (Faraday efficiency, 90%; yield rate, 112.52 µmol cm-2  h-1 ) at -0.6 V versus RHE, which is dramatically higher than the corresponding Cu single-atom, Fe single-atom and all NORR single-atom catalysts in the literature so far. Moreover, an assembled proof-of-concept Zn-NO battery using CuFe DS/NC as the cathode outputs a power density of 2.30 mW cm-2 and an NH3 yield of 45.52 µg h-1  mgcat -1 . The theoretical calculation result indicates that bimetallic sites can promote electrocatalytic NORR by changing the rate-determining step and accelerating the protonation process. This work provides a flexible strategy for efficient sustainable NH3 synthesis.

Hexagonal Cobalt Nanosheets for High-Performance Electrocatalytic NO Reduction to NH3

Electrocatalytic nitric oxide (NO) reduction not only provides an extremely promising strategy for ambient NH₃ generation but also alleviates the artificially disrupted N-cycle balance. However, exploring efficient electrocatalysts to enhance the NO electroreduction performance remains a significant challenge. Herein, a hexagonal-close-packed Co nanosheet (hcp-Co) is prepared and exhibits a high NH₃ yield of 439.50 μmol cm^-2 h^-1 and a Faraday efficiency of 72.58%, outperforming the face-centered cubic phase of the Co nanosheet (fcc-Co) and most reported electrocatalysts. Through the combination of density functional theory calculations and NO temperature-programmed desorption experiments, the superior catalytic NO reduction reaction (NORR) activity on the hcp-Co can be attributed to the unique electron structures and proton shuttle effect. A proof-of-concept device of Zn-NO batteries using the hcp-Co as the cathode is assembled and shows a power density of 4.66 mW cm^-2, which is superior to the reported performance in the literature so far.

Innovative Electrochemical Strategies for Hydrogen Production: From Electricity Input to Electricity Output

Renewable H₂ production by water electrolysis has attracted much attention due to its numerous advantages. However, the energy consumption of conventional water electrolysis is high and mainly driven by the kinetically inert anodic oxygen evolution reaction. An alternative approach is the coupling of different half-cell reactions and the use of redox mediators. In this review, we, therefore, summarize the latest findings on innovative electrochemical strategies for H₂ production. First, we address redox mediators utilized in water splitting, including soluble and insoluble species, and the corresponding cell concepts. Second, we discuss alternative anodic reactions involving organic and inorganic chemical transformations. Then, electrochemical H₂ production at both the cathode and anode, or even H₂ production together with electricity generation, is presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects for the future development of this research field are highlighted.

Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Selective C-N Coupling toward Electrocatalytic Urea Synthesis

The electrocatalytic C-N coupling for one-step urea synthesis under ambient conditions serves as the promising alternative to the traditional urea synthetic protocol. However, the hydrogenation of intermediate species hinders the efficient urea synthesis. Herein, the oxygen vacancy-enriched CeO₂ was demonstrated as the efficient electrocatalyst with the stabilization of the crucial intermediate of *NO via inserting into vacant sites, which is conducive to the subsequent C-N coupling process rather than protonation, whereas the poor selectivity of C-N coupling with protonation was observed on the vacancy-deficient catalyst. The oxygen vacancy-mediated selective C-N coupling was distinguished and validated by the in situ sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The introduction of oxygen vacancies tailors the common catalyst carrier into an efficient electrocatalyst with a high urea yield rate of 943.6 mg h^-1 g^-1, superior than that of partial noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. This work provides novel insights into the catalyst design and developments of coupling systems.

CoP Nanoparticle Confined in P, N Co-Doped Porous Carbon Anchored on P-Doped Carbonized Wood Fibers with Tailored Electronic Structure for Efficient Urea Electro-Oxidation

Electronic structure optimization and architecture modulation are widely regarded as rational strategies to enhance the electrocatalysts catalytic performance. Herein, a hybridization of ZIF-67-derived CoP nanoparticles embedded in P, N co-doped carbon matrix (PNC) and anchored on P-doped carbonized wood fibers (PCWF) is constructed using a simple simultaneous phosphorization and carbonization strategy. Benefiting from the optimized surface/interface electronic structures, abundant exposed active sites, and outstanding conductivity, the CoP@PNC/PCWF can drive the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with greater activity and better stability than most recently reported electrocatalysts, in which a potential as low as 1.32 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) is needed to reach 50 mA cm^-2 and shows excellent durability. Furthermore, for overall urea splitting, using the CoP@PNC/PCWF electrocatalyst as the anode and commercial Pt/C supported on nickel foam as the cathode, an ultralow cell voltage of 1.50 V (vs RHE) is expected to achieve the 50 mA cm^-2 and operate continuously for more than 50 h at 20 mA cm^-2 . The reported strategy may shed light on the use of renewable resources to design and synthesize high-performance non-Ni-based phosphides UOR electrocatalysts for energy-saving H₂ production.

Mesophase Pitch-Based Carbon Fibers: Accelerated Stabilization of Pitch Fibers under Effective Plasma Irradiation-Assisted Modification

Stabilization is the most complicated and time-consuming step in the manufacture of carbon fibers (CFs), which is important to prepare CFs with high performance. Accelerated stabilization was successfully demonstrated under effective plasma irradiation-assisted modification (PIM) of mesophase pitch fibers (PFs). The results showed that the PIM treatment could obviously introduce more oxygen-containing groups into PFs, which was remarkably efficient in shortening the stabilization time of PFs with a faster stabilization heating rate, as well as in preparing the corresponding CFs with higher performance. The obtained graphitized fiber (GF-5) from the PF-5 under PIM treatment of 5 min presented a higher tensile strength of 2.21 GPa, a higher tensile modulus of 502 GPa, and a higher thermal conductivity of 920 W/m·K compared to other GFs. Therefore, the accelerated stabilization of PFs by PIM treatment is an efficient strategy for developing low-cost pitch-based CFs with high performance.
