Pd8(PDip)6: Cubic, Unsaturated, Zerovalent

Atomically precise nanoclusters hold promise for supramolecular assembly and (opto)electronic- as well as magnetic materials. Herein, this work reports that treating palladium(0) precursors with a triphosphirane affords strongly colored Pd8(PDip)6 that is fully characterized by mass spectrometry, heteronuclear and Cross-Polarization Magic-Angle Spinning (CP-MAS) NMR-, infrared (IR), UV-vis, and X-ray photoelectron (XP) spectroscopies, single-crystal X-Ray diffraction (sc-XRD), mass spectrometry, and cyclovoltammetry (CV). This coordinatively unsaturated 104-electron Pd(0) cluster features a cubic Pd8-core, µ4-capping phosphinidene ligands, and is air-stable. Quantum chemical calculations provide insight to the cluster's electronic structure and suggest 5s/4d orbital mixing as well as minor Pd─P covalency. Trapping experiments reveal that cluster growth proceeds via insertion of Pd(0) into the triphosphirane. The unsaturated cluster senses ethylene and binds isocyanides, which triggers the rearrangement to a tetrahedral structure with a reduced frontier orbital energy gap. These experiments demonstrate facile cluster manipulation and highlight non-destructive cluster rearrangement as is required for supramolecular assembly.

On the Reactivity of Mes*P(PMe3 ) towards Aluminum(I) Compounds - Evidence for the Intermediate Formation of Phosphaalumenes

Phosphaalumenes are the heavier isoelectronic analogs of alkynes and have eluded facile synthesis until recently. We have reported that the combination of a phosphinidene transfer agent, Ar TerP(PMe3 ) (Ar Ter=2,6-Ar2 -C6 H3 ), with (Cp*Al)4 (Cp*=C5 (CH3 )5 ) afforded the phosphaalumenes Ar TerPAlCp* as isolable, violet, thermally stable compounds. In here we describe attempts to utilize Mes*P(PMe3 ) (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3 -C6 H2 ) as a phosphinidene source in combination with different Al(I) precursors, namely Dip NacnacAl (Dip Nacnac=HC[C(Me)NDip]2 , Dip=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ), (Cp*Al)4 and Cp3t Al (Cp3t =1,2,4-tBu3 -C5 H2 ). In all cases the formation of phosphaalumenes was not observed, however, their intermediate formation is indicated by formation of the dimer [Cp*Al(μ-PMes*)]2 (2) and C-H-bond activation products along the putative P=Al bond, giving unusual 1,2-P,Al-tetrahydronaphtalene derivatives 1 and 4, clearly underlining the role the sterically demanding group on phosphorus plays in these transformations. The reactivity studies are supported by theoretical studies, demonstrating a thermodynamic preference for the C-H activation products. Additionally, we show that there are potential pitfalls in the synthesis of Cp*2 AlH, the precursor to make (Cp*Al)4 and give recommendations how to circumvent these.

Photochemical formation and reversible base-induced cleavage of a phosphagallene

The reactivity of Cp*Ga (Cp* = C₅Me₅) towards phosphanylidenephosphoranes of the type ^ArTerP(PMe₃) (^ArTer = ^DipTer 2,6-(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)₂C₆H₃), ^TipTer 2,6-(2,4,6-iPr₃C₆H₂)₂C₆H₃ was investigated. While no thermal reaction was observed (in line with DFT results), irradiation at 405 nm at low temperatures resulted in the formation of phosphagallenes ^DipTerP = GaCp* (1a) and ^TipTerP = GaCp* (1b) accompanied by release of PMe₃. When warming the reaction mixture to ambient temperatures without irradiation, the clean re-formation of ^ArTerP(PMe₃) and Cp*Ga in a second-order reaction was observed. Upon removal of PMe₃, 1a and 1b were isolated and fully characterized. Both derivatives were found to be labile and decomposed to the phosphafluorenes 2a and 2b, indicating generation of the transient phosphinidene ^ArTerP along with Cp*Ga. First reactivity studies show that CO₂ and H₂O cleanly reacted with 1a, affording ^DipTerPCO (3) and ^DipTerPH₂ (4), respectively.

Cationic dialanes with fluxional π-bridged cyclopentadienyl ligands

Unique π-cyclopentadienyl bridged dialanes are synthesized as complex salts with aluminate anions by comproportionation of aluminocenium cations [Al^III(Cp)(Cp*)]⁺/[Al^IIICp₂]⁺ with [(Al^ICp*)₄]. Very short Al-Al bond lengths occur in positively charged Al₂⁴⁺ fragments. Intriguingly, the prepared asymmetric dialane shows a unique fluxional coordination of the cyclopentadienyl ligands.

EDA-NOCV Analysis of Donor-Base-Stabilized Elusive Monomeric Aluminum Phosphides [(L)P-Al(L'); L, L' = cAACMe, NHCMe, PMe3]

Herein, we report on the stability and bonding analysis of donor-base-stabilized monomeric AlP species (1-6) of the general formula (L)P-Al(L'); [L = cAAC^Me, L' = cAAC^Me, NHC^Me, PMe₃, (N ⁱ Pr₂)₂ (1-4); L = L' = NHC^Me, PMe₃ (5 and 6); cAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene; NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene]. Energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) analysis indicates the synthetic viability of this class of species, stabilized in their singlet ground state, in the laboratory. The C_L-P bond is found to be a partial double bond (WBI ∼ 1.45), while the C_L/P_L-Al bond is a single bond (WBI ∼ 0.42-0.69). These bonds are mostly covalent or dative σ/π bonds depending upon the ligands attached. The central P-Al bond is an electron-sharing covalent polar single bond (WBI ∼ 0.80; P-Al) for 1-4 and a dative σ bond for 5 and 6 (WBI ∼ 0.89-0.93; P-Al). The calculated intrinsic interaction energies of the central P-Al bonds are found to be in the range from -116 to -216 kcal/mol (1-3 and 5 and 6). This value is the highest for compound 3, possibly due to the push and pull effects from the ligands PMe₃ and cAAC, respectively.

Heavier group 13/15 multiple bond systems: synthesis, structure and chemical bond activation

Heavier group 13/15 multiple bonds have been under investigation since the late 80s and to date, several examples have been published, which shows the obsoleteness of the so-called double bond rule. Especially in the last few years, more and more group 13/15 multiple bonds became synthetically feasible and their application in terms of small molecule activation has been demonstrated. Our group has recently shown that the combination of the pnictinidene precursor ^DipTer-Pn(PMe₃) (Pn = P, As) in combination with Al(I) synthons afforded the first examples of phospha- and arsaalumenes as isolable and thermally robust compounds. This feature article is intended to show the recent developments in the field, to outline early synthetic approaches and to discuss strategies to unlock the synthetic potential of these elusive chemical bonds.

Generation of a transient base-stabilised arylalumylene for the facile deconstruction of aromatic molecules

While a stable base-free arylalumylene bearing a sterically encumbered terphenyl substituent has been reported previously, we herein report that our attempts to form a base-stabilised arylalumylene bearing a relatively small terphenyl substituent and an N-heterocyclic carbene base led instead to a “masked” dialumene (LRAl Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> AlRL), self-stabilised by one peripheral aromatic group. Intriguingly, examining the behavior of this species or its transient dialumene formed from reducing the diiodoarylalane in aromatic solvents under different conditions reveals that they both decouple into the desired base-stabilised arylalumylene. This transient acyclic, dicoordinate alumylene is highly reactive, deconstructing benzene and toluene to furnish dialuminium derivatives of pentalene, providing the first example of a neutral Al^I compound able to deconstruct these less reactive arenes. Computational insights were also gained on the dialumene dissociation and on the mechanism of arene deconstruction by alumylene.

Attempts to form a base-stabilised arylalumylene by reducing an NHC-coordinated diiodoterphenylalane led to a masked dialumene. Reactivity studies showed it decouples to initially aimed arylalumylene, which easily deconstructs less reactive arenes.

Cyclo-Dipnictadialanes

Using the AlI precursor Cp3t Al in conjunction with triphosphiranes (PAr)3 (Ar=Mes, Dip, Tip) we have succeeded in preparing Lewis base-free cyclic diphosphadialanes with both the Al and P atoms bearing three substituents. Using the sterically more demanding Dip and Tip substituents the first 1,2-diphospha-3,4-dialuminacyclobutanes were obtained, whereas with Mes substituents [Cp3t Al(μ-PMes)]2 is formed. This divergent reactivity was corroborated by DFT studies, which indicated the thermodynamic preference for the 1,2-diphospha-3,4-dialuminacyclobutane form for sterically more demanding groups on phosphorus. Using Cp*Al we could extend this concept to the corresponding cyclic diarsadialanes [Cp*Al(μ-AsAr)]2 (Ar=Dip, Tip) and additionally add the phosphorus variants [Cp*Al(μ-PAr)]2 (P=Mes, Dip, Tip). The reactivity of one variant [Cp3t Al(μ-PPh)]2 towards NHCs was tested and resulted in double NHC-stabilised [Cp3t (IiPr2 )Al(μ-PPh)]2 .
