Engineering Lattice Oxygen Activation of Iridium Clusters Stabilized on Amorphous Bimetal Borides Array for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Toward Realistic Models of the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) supplies the protons and electrons needed to transform renewable electricity into chemicals and fuels. However, the OER is kinetically sluggish; it operates at significant rates only when the applied potential far exceeds the reversible voltage. The origin of this overpotential is hidden in a complex mechanism involving multiple electron transfers and chemical bond making/breaking steps. Our desire to improve catalytic performance has then made mechanistic studies of the OER an area of major scientific inquiry, though the complexity of the reaction has made understanding difficult. While historically, mechanistic studies have relied solely on experiment and phenomenological models, over the past twenty years ab initio simulation has been playing an increasingly important role in developing our understanding of the electrocatalytic OER and its reaction mechanisms. In this Review we cover advances in our mechanistic understanding of the OER, organized by increasing complexity in the way through which the OER is modeled. We begin with phenomenological models built using experimental data before reviewing early efforts to incorporate ab initio methods into mechanistic studies. We go on to cover how the assumptions in these early ab initio simulations─no electric field, electrolyte, or explicit kinetics─have been relaxed. Through comparison with experimental literature, we explore the veracity of these different assumptions. We summarize by discussing the most critical open challenges in developing models to understand the mechanisms of the OER.

The CuSCN layer between BiVO4 and NiFeOx for facilitating photogenerated carrier transfer and water oxidation kinetics

Modification of oxygen evolution co-catalyst (OEC) on the surface of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) can effectively improve the kinetics of water oxidation, but it is still limited by the small hole extraction driving force at the BiVO4/OEC interface. Modulating the BiVO4/OEC interface with a hole transfer layer (HTL) is expected to facilitate hole transport from BiVO4 to the OEC surface. Herein, a copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) HTL is inserted between BiVO4 and NiFeOx OEC to create BiVO4/CuSCN/NiFeOx photoanode, resulting in a significant enhancement of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. From electrochemical analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the markedly enhanced PEC performance is attributed to the insertion of CuSCN as an HTL, which promotes the extraction of holes from BiVO4 surface and boosts the water oxidation kinetics. The optimal photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 5.6 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) and an impressive charge separation efficiency of 96.2 %. This work offers valuable insights into the development of advanced photoanodes for solar energy conversion and emphasizes the importance of selecting an appropriate HTL to mitigate recombination at the BiVO4/OEC interface.

Synergistic Assistance of Ir Clusters and NiCo2O4 Nanosheets Interfaces in Direct O-O Coupling for High-Efficiency Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

Adopting noble metals on non-noble metals is an effective strategy to balance the cost and activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, a thorough analysis of the synergistic OER is conducted at the heterogeneous interface formed by Ir clusters and NiCo2O4 based on DFT calculations. Specifically, the electrons spontaneously bring an eg occupancy of interfacial Ir close to unity after the absorbed O, providing more transferable electrons for the conversion of the absorbed O-intermediates. Besides, the diffuse distribution of electrons in the Ir 5d orbital fills the antibonding orbital after O is absorbed, avoiding the desorption difficulties caused by the stronger Ir-O bonds. The electrons transfer from Ir to Co atoms at the heterogeneous interface and fill the Co 3d band near the Fermi level, stimulating the interfacial Co to participate in the direct O-O coupling (DOOC) pathway. Experimentally, the ultrathin-modulated NiCo2O4 nanosheets are used to support Ir clusters (Ircluster-E-NiCo2O4) by the electrodeposition method. The as-synthesized Ircluster-E-NiCo2O4 catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an ultralow overpotential of 238 mV and works steadily for 100 h under a high current of 100 mA cm-2, benefiting from the efficient DOOC pathway during the OER.

KIr4O8 Nanowires with Rich Hydroxyl Promote Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer

The sluggish kinetics for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and insufficient catalytic performance over the corresponding Ir-based catalysts are still enormous challenges in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). Herein, it is reported that KIr4O8 nanowires anode catalyst with more exposed active sites and rich hydroxyl achieves a current density of 1.0 A cm-2 at 1.68 V and possesses excellent catalytic stability with 1230 h in PEMWE. Combining in situ Raman spectroscopy and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy results, the modified adsorbate evolution mechanism is proposed, wherein the rich hydroxyl in the inherent structure of KIr4O8 nanowires directly participates in the catalytic process for favoring the OER. Density functional theory calculation results further suggest that the enhanced proximity between Ir (d) and O (p) band center in KIr4O8 can strengthen the covalence of Ir-O, facilitate the electron transfer between adsorbents and active sites, and decrease the energy barrier of rate-determining step from OH* to O* during the OER.

Enhanced stability of boron modified NiFe hydroxide for oxygen evolution reaction

The introduction of non-metal elements including boron has been identified as a significant means to enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in NiFe-based catalysts. To understand the catalytic activity and stability, recent attention has widened toward the Fe species as a potential contributor, prompting exploration from various perspectives. Here, boron incorporation in NiFe hydroxide achieves significantly enhanced activity and stability compared to the boron-free NiFe hydroxide. The boron inclusion in NiFe hydroxide is found to show exceptionally improved stability from 12 to 100 hours at a high current density (200 mA cm-2). It facilitates the production and redeposition of OER-active, high-valent Fe species in NiFe hydroxide based on the operando Raman, UV-vis, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. It is proposed that preserving a homogenous distribution of Fe across the boron-containing catalyst surface enhances OER stability, unlike the bare NiFe hydroxide electrocatalyst, which exhibits uneven Fe dissolution, confirmed through elementary mapping analysis. These findings shed light on the potential of anionic regulation to augment the activity of iron, an aspect not previously explored in depth, and thus are expected to aid in designing practical OER electrocatalysts.

Anomalous Detachment Behavior and Directional Reconstruction Regulation of Leaching-Type Precatalysts for Industrial Water Electrolyzers

Current reconstruction chemistry studies are mainly operated at the laboratory scale, where the operating parameters are different from those used in industrial water electrolyzers. This gap leads to unclear reconstruction behaviors under industrial conditions and constrains the application of catalysts. Here, this work presents a new reconstruction mechanism and anomalous detachment phenomena observed in leaching-type oxygen-evolving precatalysts under industrial conditions, different from the reported results obtained under laboratory conditions. The identified detachment issues are closely linked to the production of a potassium salt separate phase, which proves sensitive to the local environment, and its instability easily leads to catalyst stripping from the substrate. By establishing detachment critical point and operating parameter-detachment correlation, a targeted reconstruction strategy is proposed to achieve smooth ligand leaching and effectively solve the detachment issue. Theoretical analyses validate the dual-site regulation in directionally reconstructed catalysts with optimized intermediate adsorption. Under industrial conditions, the coupled electrolyzer delivers an industrial-level current density at low cell voltage with prolonged durability, 1 A cm-2 at 2 V for over 340 h. This work bridges the gap of leaching-type precatalysts between laboratory test conditions and industrial operating conditions.

Oxygen Radical Coupling on Short-Range Ordered Ru Atom Arrays Enables Exceptional Activity and Stability for Acidic Water Oxidation

The discovery of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid is vital for the commercialization of the proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzer. In this work, we demonstrate that short-range Ru atom arrays with near-ideal Ru-Ru interatomic distances and a unique Ru-O hybridization state can trigger direct O*-O* radical coupling to form an intermediate O*-O*-Ru configuration during acidic OER without generating OOH* species. Further, the Ru atom arrays suppress the participation of lattice oxygen in the OER and the dissolution of active Ru. Benefiting from these advantages, the as-designed Ru array-Co3O4 electrocatalyst breaks the activity/stability trade-off that plagues RuO2-based electrocatalysts, delivering an excellent OER overpotential of only 160 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and outstanding durability during 1500 h operation, representing one of the best acid-stable OER electrocatalysts reported to date. 18O-labeled operando spectroscopic measurements together with theoretical investigations revealed that the short-range Ru atom arrays switched on an oxide path mechanism (OPM) during the OER. Our work not only guides the design of improved acidic OER catalysts but also encourages the pursuit of short-range metal atom array-based electrocatalysts for other electrocatalytic reactions.

Transition metal-based electrocatalysts for alkaline overall water splitting: advancements, challenges, and perspectives

Water electrolysis is a promising method for efficiently producing hydrogen and oxygen, crucial for renewable energy conversion and fuel cell technologies. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are two key electrocatalytic reactions occurring during water splitting, necessitating the development of active, stable, and low-cost electrocatalysts. Transition metal (TM)-based electrocatalysts, spanning noble metals and TM oxides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, borides, chalcogenides, and dichalcogenides, have garnered significant attention due to their outstanding characteristics, including high electronic conductivity, tunable valence electron configuration, high stability, and cost-effectiveness. This timely review discusses developments in TM-based electrocatalysts for the HER and OER in alkaline media in the last 10 years, revealing that the exposure of more accessible surface-active sites, specific electronic effects, and string effects are essential for the development of efficient electrocatalysts towards electrochemical water splitting application. This comprehensive review serves as a guide for designing and constructing state-of-the-art, high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts based on TMs, particularly for applications in water splitting.

Real-time screening of NixBy bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall NH3 synthesis via SG-TC SECM

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis, which couples oxygen evolution at the anode with nitrogen reduction at the cathode, holds great significance for future food and energy needs. Both of these half-cell reactions determine the overall cell potential and efficiency of the process. However, the employment of different catalysts on either side, due to discrete mechanisms, increases the complexity and material processing costs of the system, where the designing of a bifunctional catalyst active towards both the NRR and OER is of huge significance. Unfortunately, the initial screening of the designed catalysts via physical characterizations, optical methods and other techniques, does not provide details about the electrochemical activity. The scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) technique can be useful to screen multi-catalysts at the same time for their electrochemical activities. Herein, we employed the sample generation-tip collection (SG-TC) mode of SECM to screen the designed NixBy catalysts before half-cell investigations, which suggested that the catalyst synthesized via sonochemical reduction (SR), i.e. NixBy (SR), was a better catalyst. This inference was in accordance with the half-cell NRR and OER measurements (FE: 49% for NH3 production, OER overpotential: 300 mV). By virtue of this remarkable bifunctional activity, the NRR-OER coupled full cell was assembled, which initiated the NH3 production at just 1.7 V and produced NH3 (1.08 mg h-1 mgcat-1) at the cathode and O2 (0.81 mg h-1 mgcat-1) at the anode after 2 h of electrolysis at 1.9 V.

Recent Progress on Nickel- and Iron-Based Metallic Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Evolution Reaction: A Review

Developing sustainable energy solutions to safeguard the environment is a critical ongoing demand. Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is a green approach to create effective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for the water oxidation process. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have become commonly utilized materials in recent years because of their distinguishing pore architectures, metal nodes easy accessibility, large specific surface areas, shape, and adaptable function. This review outlines the most significant developments in current work on developing improved MOFs for enhancing EWS. The benefits and drawbacks of MOFs are first discussed in this review. Then, some cutting-edge methods for successfully modifying MOFs are also highlighted. Recent progress on nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe) based MOFs have been critically discussed. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the existing challenges and prospects for Ni- and Fe-based MOFs are summarized.

Lattice oxygen activation and local electric field enhancement by co-doping Fe and F in CoO nanoneedle arrays for industrial electrocatalytic water oxidation

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to renewable energy conversion technologies, but the structure-activity relationships and underlying catalytic mechanisms in catalysts are not fully understood. We herein demonstrate a strategy to promote OER with simultaneously achieved lattice oxygen activation and enhanced local electric field by dual doping of cations and anions. Rough arrays of Fe and F co-doped CoO nanoneedles are constructed, and a low overpotential of 277 mV at 500 mA cm-2 is achieved. The dually doped Fe and F could cooperatively tailor the electronic properties of CoO, leading to improved metal-oxygen covalency and stimulated lattice oxygen activation. Particularly, Fe doping induces a synergetic effect of tip enhancement and proximity effect, which effectively concentrates OH- ions, optimizes reaction energy barrier and promotes O2 desorption. This work demonstrates a conceptual strategy to couple lattice oxygen and local electric field for effective electrocatalytic water oxidation.

Water Activation Triggered by Cu-Co Double-Atom Catalyst for Silane Oxidation

High-performance catalysts sufficient to significantly reduce the energy barrier of water activation are crucial in facilitating reactions that are restricted by water dissociation. Herein we present a Cu-Co double-atom catalyst (CuCo-DAC), which possesses a uniform and well-defined CuCoN6 (OH) structure, and works together to promote water activation in silane oxidation. The catalyst achieves superior catalytic performance far exceeding that of single-atom catalysts (SACs). Various functional silanes are converted into silanols with up to 98 % yield and 99 % selectivity. Kinetic studies show that the activation energy of silane oxidation by CuCo-DAC is significantly lower than that of Cu single-atom catalyst (Cu-SAC) and Co single-atom catalyst (Co-SAC). Theoretical calculations demonstrate two different reaction pathways where water splitting is the rate-determining step and it is accelerated by CuCo-DAC, whereas H2 formation is key for its single-atom counterpart.

Loading IrOx Clusters on MnO2 Boosts Acidic Water Oxidation via Metal-Support Interaction

Noble metal-based electrocatalysts are crucial for efficient acidic water oxidation to develop green hydrogen energy. However, traditional noble metal catalysts loaded on inactive substrates show limited intrinsic catalytic activity, and their large sizes have compromised the atom efficiency of these noble metals. Herein, IrOx nanoclusters with sizes below 2 nm, displaying high atom-utilization efficiency of Ir species, were supported on a redox-active MnO2 nanosubstrate (IrOx/MnO2) with different phases (α-MnO2, δ-MnO2, and ε-MnO2) to explore the optimal combination. Electrochemical measurements showed that IrOx/ε-MnO2 had excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, superior to its counterpart, IrOx/α-MnO2 (242 mV) and IrOx/δ-MnO2 (286 mV). Moreover, it also delivered robust stability with no obvious change in operating potential at 10 mA cm-2 during 50 h of continuous operation. Combining the XPS results and Bader charge analysis, we demonstrated that the strong metal-support interactions of IrOx/ε-MnO2 could effectively regulate the electronic structures of the active Ir atoms and stabilize IrOx nanoclusters on supports to suppress their detachment, resulting in significantly enhanced catalytic activity and stability for acidic OER. DFT calculations further supported that the enhanced catalytic OER performance of IrOx/ε-MnO2 could be ascribed to the appropriate strength of interactions between the active Ir sites and the reaction intermediates of the potential-determining step (*O and *OOH) regulated by the redox-active substrates.

Nanoflower-like high-entropy Ni-Fe-Cr-Mn-Co (oxy)hydroxides for oxygen evolution

High-entropy materials (HEMs) have potential application value in electrocatalytic water splitting because of their unique alloy design concept and significant mixed entropy effect. Here, we synthesize a high-entropy Ni-Fe-Cr-Mn-Co (oxy)hydroxide on nickel foam (NF) by a solvothermal method. The flower-like structure of FeNiCrMnCoOOH/NF can provide abundant active sites, thus improving the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. In 1 M KOH, the FeNiCrMnCoOOH/NF shows an ultra-low overpotential (η10) of 201 mV for the OER, superior to FeNiCrMnAlOOH/NF, FeNiCrMnCuOOH/NF, FeNiCrMnMoOOH/NF, and FeNiCrMnCeOOH/NF. In addition, it exhibits a low η10 of 223 mV in 0.5 M NaCl + 1 M KOH and excellent stability. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements indicate that the synergistic effect between multiple metals accelerates charge transfer, while in situ Raman measurements reveal that NiOOH is a key active species for the OER. This work is of great significance for the construction of high-entropy (oxy)hydroxides for seawater electrolysis.

Activating lattice oxygen in high-entropy LDH for robust and durable water oxidation

The oxygen evolution reaction is known to be a kinetic bottleneck for water splitting. Triggering the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) can break the theoretical limit of the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism and enhance the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics, yet the unsatisfied stability remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a high-entropy MnFeCoNiCu layered double hydroxide decorated with Au single atoms and O vacancies (AuSA-MnFeCoNiCu LDH), which not only displays a low overpotential of 213 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and high mass activity of 732.925 A g-1 at 250 mV overpotential in 1.0 M KOH, but also delivers good stability with 700 h of continuous operation at ~100 mA cm-2. Combining the advanced spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory calculations, it is demonstrated that the synergistic interaction between the incorporated Au single atoms and O vacancies leads to an upshift in the O 2p band and weakens the metal-O bond, thus triggering the LOM, reducing the energy barrier, and boosting the intrinsic activity.

Electrode/Electrolyte Synergy for Concerted Promotion of Electron and Proton Transfers toward Efficient Neutral Water Oxidation

Neutral water oxidation is a crucial half-reaction for various electrochemical applications requiring pH-benign conditions. However, its sluggish kinetics with limited proton and electron transfer rates greatly impacts the overall energy efficiency. In this work, we created an electrode/electrolyte synergy strategy for simultaneously enhancing the proton and electron transfers at the interface toward highly efficient neutral water oxidation. The charge transfer was accelerated between the iridium oxide and in situ formed nickel oxyhydroxide on the electrode end. The proton transfer was expedited by the compact borate environment that originated from hierarchical fluoride/borate anions on the electrolyte end. These concerted promotions facilitated the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) events. Due to the electrode/electrolyte synergy, Ir-O and Ir-OO- intermediates could be directly detected by in situ Raman spectroscopy, and the rate-limiting step of Ir-O oxidation was determined. This synergy strategy can extend the scope of optimizing electrocatalytic activities toward more electrode/electrolyte combinations.

Strain and Surface Engineering of Multicomponent Metallic Nanomaterials with Unconventional Phases

Multicomponent metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases show great prospects in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, owing to unique crystal structures and abundant structural effects. In this review, we emphasize the progress in the strain and surface engineering of these novel nanomaterials. We start with a brief introduction of the structural configurations of these materials, based on the interaction types between the components. Next, the fundamentals of strain, strain effect in relevant metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases, and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then the progress in surface engineering of these multicomponent metallic nanomaterials is demonstrated from the aspects of morphology control, crystallinity control, surface modification, and surface reconstruction. Moreover, the applications of the strain- and surface-engineered unconventional nanomaterials mainly in electrocatalysis are also introduced, where in addition to the catalytic performance, the structure-performance correlations are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising field are prospected.

CoP@Ni core-shell heterostructure nanowire array: A highly efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

The inferior performance of non-precious metals on electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution can be mainly attributed to the inappropriate adsorption strength of intermediates. A core-shell heterostructure of CoP@Ni is developed by hydrothermal reaction, thermal phosphorization and subsequent electrodeposition, with metallic Ni supported by CoP nanowire array. The as-prepared CoP@Ni core-shell heterostructure nanowire array has a superior activity on hydrogen evolution in alkaline electrolyte, with an overpotential of 71 mV to drive 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 66 mV dec^-1. The electronic structure of CoP@Ni is tuned for modulating the adsorption strength of intermediates. The theoretical calculations reveal that CoP@Ni has metallic characteristics with a zero-bandgap, which leads to the promoted charge transfer. More importantly, the intrinsic activity of CoP@Ni is greatly increased, with a lower energy barrier in the reaction pathway. This work points out the importance of constructing the heterostructure for improving the intrinsic activity, which can pave the way to the exploration of high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Flower-Like Amorphous MoO3- x Stabilized Ru Single Atoms for Efficient Overall Water/Seawater Splitting

Benefitting from the maximum atom utilization efficiency, special size quantum effects and tailored active sites, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been promising candidates for bifunctional catalysts toward water splitting. Besides, due to the unique structure and properties, some amorphous materials have been found to possess better performance than their crystalline counterparts in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, by combining the advantages of ruthenium (Ru) single atoms and amorphous substrates, amorphous molybdenum-based oxide stabilized single-atomic-site Ru (Ru SAs-MoO_{3- x} /NF) catalysts are conceived as a self-supported electrode. By virtue of the large surface area, enhanced intrinsic activity and fast reaction kinetics, the as-prepared Ru SAs-MoO_{3- x} /NF electrode effectively drives both oxygen evolution reaction (209 mV @ 10 mA cm^-2 ) and hydrogen evolution reaction (36 mV @ 10 mA cm^-2 ) in alkaline media. Impressively, the assembled electrolyzer merely requires an ultralow cell voltage of 1.487 V to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . Furthermore, such an electrode also exhibits a great application potential in alkaline seawater electrolysis, achieving a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.759 V. In addition, Ru SAs-MoO_{3- x} /NF only has very small current density decay in the long-term constant current water splitting test.

Regulating electronic states of nitride/hydroxide to accelerate kinetics for oxygen evolution at large current density

Rational design efficient transition metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for water splitting. However, industrial water-alkali electrolysis requires large current densities at low overpotentials, always limited by intrinsic activity. Herein, we report hierarchical bimetal nitride/hydroxide (NiMoN/NiFe LDH) array as model catalyst, regulating the electronic states and tracking the relationship of structure-activity. As-activated NiMoN/NiFe LDH exhibits the industrially required current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 at overpotential of 266 mV with 250 h stability for OER. Especially, in-situ electrochemical spectroscopic reveals that heterointerface facilitates dynamic structure evolution to optimize electronic structure. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy implies accelerated OER kinetics and intermediate evolution due to fast charge transport. The OER mechanism is revealed by the combination of theoretical and experimental studies, indicating as-activated NiMoN/NiFe LDH follows lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism with accelerated kinetics. This work paves an avenue to develop efficient catalysts for industrial water electrolysis via tuning electronic states.

Effect of B-Doping and Manifestation on TiO2-Supported IrO2 for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Water Electrolysis

To commercialize hydrogen production by proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, the amount of rare and precious metal (iridium) required for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) must be greatly reduced. In order to solve the problem, carrier loading is used to reduce the amount of iridium. Unlike the carrier modified by conventional metal element doping, this work doped the carrier with the nonmetallic element and then prepared IrO₂/TiB_xO₂ composite catalyst using the Adams melting method. B-doped TiO₂ supports with different doping amounts show the main phase rutile structure. Among them, the conductivity of B-doped carrier shows an increasing trend with the increase of doping amount, because boron can form holes and negative centers after doping, and more carriers improve the conductivity of the support. In addition, since element B is manifested from inside to outside on the support, B can affect the catalytic process. After the manifestation of element B, the carrier loaded with IrO₂ exhibited superior electrocatalytic properties. The voltammetric charge per unit mass of 40IrO₂/TiB_0.3O₂#2 (where #2 represents B after manifestation) reaches 1970 mC (cm² mg)^-1, the corresponding overpotential is 273 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm^-2, and the Tafel slope is 61.9 mV/dec Also, the charge transfer resistance is only 15 Ω. Finally, in the stability test, the composite catalyst is also better than pure IrO₂ in the 20 000 s operation. Therefore, element B has an unexpectedly positive effect on the catalytic progress on the surface of the support after its manifestation.

Pd-PdO Nanodomains on Amorphous Ru Metallene Oxide for High-Performance Multifunctional Electrocatalysis

Developing highly efficient multifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for future sustainable energy  pursuits, but remains a great challenge. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy is used to confine atomically thin Pd-PdO nanodomains to amorphous Ru metallene oxide (RuO₂ ). The as-synthesized electrocatalyst (Pd₂ RuOx-0.5 h) exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward the pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (η₁₀  = 14 mV in 1 m KOH, η₁₀  = 12 mV in 0.5 m H₂ SO₄ , and η₁₀  = 22 mV in 1 m PBS), alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (η₁₀  = 225 mV), and overall water splitting (E₁₀  = 1.49 V) with high mass activity and operational stability. Further reduction endows the material (Pd₂ RuOx-2 h) with a promising alkaline oxygen reduction activity, evidenced by high halfway potential, four-electron selectivity, and excellent poison tolerance. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to the rational integration of favorable nanostructures, including 1) the atomically thin nanosheet morphology, 2) the coexisting amorphous and defective crystalline phases, and 3) the multi-component heterostructural features. These structural factors effectively regulate the material's electronic configuration and the adsorption of intermediates at the active sites for favorable reaction energetics.

Dual Integrating Oxygen and Sulphur on Surface of CoTe Nanorods Triggers Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The bottleneck of large-scale implementation of electrocatalytic water-splitting technology lies in lacking inexpensive, efficient, and durable catalysts to accelerate the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Owing to more metallic features, transition metal telluride (TMT) with good electronic conductivity holds promising potential as an ideal type of electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), whereas most TMTs reported up to now still show unsatisfactory OER performance that is far below corresponding sulfide and selenide counterparts. Here, the activation and stabilization of cobalt telluride (CoTe) nanoarrays toward OER through dual integration of sulfur (S) doping and surface oxidization is reported. The as-synthesized CoO@S-CoTe catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of only 246 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a long-term stability of more than 36 h, outperforming commercial RuO₂ and other reported telluride-based OER catalysts. The combined experimental and theoretical results reveal that the enhanced OER performance stems from increased active sites exposure, improved charge transfer ability, and optimized electronic state. This work will provide a valuable guidance to release the catalytic potential of telluride-based OER catalysts via interface modulating engineering.

Pseudo-Pt Monolayer for Robust Hydrogen Oxidation

Heteroepitaxial core-shell structure is conducive to combining the advantages of the epilayer and the substrate, creating a novel multifunctionality for catalysis application. Herein, we report a pseudomorphic-Pt atomic layer (PmPt) epitaxially growing on an IrPd-core matrix (PmPt@IrPd/C) as an efficient and stable catalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction that exhibits ∼29.2 times more mass activity enhancement than that of benchmark Pt/C. The PmPt@IrPd/C catalyst also gives rise to ∼25.0 times more enhancement than Pt/C during a 50,000-cycle accelerated stability test. This robust stability originates from the resistance to carbon corrosion owing to the stronger H2O interaction instead of carbon oxide (COx) poison species, and the modulated hydroxyl (OH*) adsorption could inhibit the OH* species from shuffling the surface Pt atoms away from the substrate. Moreover, the anion-exchange membrane fuel cells assembled by PmPt@IrPd/C with an ultralow Pt loading of 0.009 mgPt cm-2 in the anode can deliver a power density of 1.27 W cm-2.

Rapid Melt-Quenching Enables General Synthesis of High-Loading Single-Atom Catalysts with Bicontinuous Nanoporous Structure

Single-atom catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their unique atomic structures and extraordinary activities in catalyzing chemical reactions. However, the lack of general and efficient approaches for producing high-density single atoms on suitably tailored supporting matrixes hinders their industrial applications. Here, a rapid melt-quenching strategy with high throughput to synthesize single atoms with high metal-atom loadings of up to 9.7 wt% or 2.6 at% on nanoporous metal compounds is reported, representing several-fold improvements compared to benchmarks in the literature. Mechanism characterizations reveal that the high-temperature melting provides the essential liquid environment and activation energy to achieve the atomization of metals, while the following rapid-quenching pins the isolated metal atoms and stabilizes the coordination environment. In comparison with carbon-supported single-atom catalysts, various collaboration combinations of single atoms and nanoporous metal compounds can be synthesized using the strategy, thus achieving efficient hydrazine oxidation-assisted H₂ production. This synthesis protocol is highly compatible with automatic operation, which provides a feasible and general route to design and manufacture specific single-atom catalysts with tunable atomic metal components and supporting matrixes, thus promoting the deployment of single-atom catalysts for various energy technology applications.

Identification of the Origin for Reconstructed Active Sites on Oxyhydroxide for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The regulation of atomic and electronic structures of active sites plays an important role in the rational design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts toward electrocatalytic hydrogen generation. However, the precise identification of the active sites for surface reconstruction behavior during OER remains elusive for water-alkali electrolysis. Herein, irreversible reconstruction behavior accompanied by copper dynamic evolution for cobalt iron layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) precatalyst to form CoFeCuOOH active species with high-valent Co species is reported, identifying the origin of reconstructed active sites through operando UV-Visible (UV-vis), in situ Raman, and X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopies. Density functional theory analysis rationalizes this typical electronic structure evolution causing the transfer of intramolecular electrons to form ligand holes, promoting the reconstruction of active sites. Specifically, unambiguous identification of active sites for CoFeCuOOH is explored by in situ ¹⁸ O isotope-labeling differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and supported by theoretical calculation, confirming mechanism switch to oxygen-vacancy-site mechanism (OVSM) pathway on lattice oxygen. This work enables to elucidate the vital role of dynamic active-site generation and the representative contribution of OVSM pathway for efficient OER performance.

Lattice oxygen activation in disordered rocksalts for boosting oxygen evolution

The recent development of some special oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts shows that the lattice oxygen could participate in the catalysis process via the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM), which the provides good possibility of exploring advanced electrocatalysts that could overcome the scaling relationship in conventional catalysis processes through a traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism. In this work, we theoretically predict that, benefiting from the unhybridized O-Li orbitals and the resulting metastable Li-O-Li ligands, the lattice oxygen could be easily activated and oxidized at relatively high oxidation voltages. Thus, lithium-excess disordered rocksalts (DRX) should possess the potential for acting as active OER electrocatalysts, which catalyze through the LOM pathway. The isotope labelling experimental results show that the lattice oxygen in the DRX was activated and participated in the OER process through the LOM pathway. The typical DRX of Li_1.2Fe_0.4Ti_0.5O₂ displays obviously pH-dependent OER activity under the LOM process and shows a low overpotential of 263 mV to reach 10 mA cm^-2 with long-term stability for 100 hours. The turnover frequency of Li_1.2Fe_0.4Ti_0.5O₂ is nearly 9 times that of LiFePO₄ at the overpotential of 300 mV. This work opens a new chemical space for exploring efficient electrocatalysts to enhance the OER performance through the LOM pathway.

Theoretical Exploration on the Role of Magnetic States to the N2 Fixation behaviors of 2D Transition Metal Tri-borides (TMB3 s)

Fixing nitrogen (N₂ ) by electrosynthesis method has become a promising way to ammonia (NH₃ ) production, nevertheless, developing electrocatalysts combining long-term stable and low-cost feathers are still a great challenge to date. Using comprehensive first-principles calculations, we herein investigate the potential of a new class of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal tri-borides (TMB₃ s) as nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) electrocatalysts, and explore the effect of magnetic orders on the NRR. Our results show that the TMB₃ s can sufficiently activate N₂ and convert it to NH₃ . Particularly, TiB₃ is identified as a high-efficiency catalyst for NRR because of its low limiting potential (-0.24 V) and good suppression of the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). For the first time, we present that these TMB₃ s with various magnetic states exhibit different performances in the adsorption of N₂ and NRR intermediates, and minor effect on activation of N₂ . Besides, VB₃ , CrB₃ , MnB₃ , and FeB₃ monolayers possess the superior capacity to suppress surface oxidation via the self-activating process, which reduces ^* O/^* OH into ^* H₂ O under NRR electrochemical conditions, thus favoring the N₂ electroreduction. This work paves the way for finding high-performance NRR catalysts for transition metal borides and pioneering the research of magnetic states effects in NRR.

Dynamic rhenium dopant boosts ruthenium oxide for durable oxygen evolution

Heteroatom-doping is a practical means to boost RuO₂ for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, a major drawback is conventional dopants have static electron redistribution. Here, we report that Re dopants in Re_0.06Ru_0.94O₂ undergo a dynamic electron accepting-donating that adaptively boosts activity and stability, which is different from conventional dopants with static dopant electron redistribution. We show Re dopants during OER, (1) accept electrons at the on-site potential to activate Ru site, and (2) donate electrons back at large overpotential and prevent Ru dissolution. We confirm via in situ characterizations and first-principle computation that the dynamic electron-interaction between Re and Ru facilitates the adsorbate evolution mechanism and lowers adsorption energies for oxygen intermediates to boost activity and stability of Re_0.06Ru_0.94O₂. We demonstrate a high mass activity of 500 A g_cata.^-1 (7811 A g_Re-Ru^-1) and a high stability number of S-number = 4.0 × 10⁶ n_oxygen n_Ru^-1 to outperform most electrocatalysts. We conclude that dynamic dopants can be used to boost activity and stability of active sites and therefore guide the design of adaptive electrocatalysts for clean energy conversions.

Modulating the Surface Electronic Structure of Active Ni Sites by Engineering Hierarchical NiFe-LDH/CuS over Cu Foam as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Water electrolysis encounters a challenging problem in designing a highly efficient, long durable, non-noble metal-free electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, in our work, a two-step hydrothermal reaction was performed to construct a hierarchal NiFe-layer double hydroxide (LDH)/CuS over copper foam for the overall water splitting reaction. While employed the same as an anode material, the designed heterostructure electrode NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu exhibits excellent OER performance and it demands 249 mV overpotential to reach a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 with a lower Tafel slope value of 81.84 mV dec^-1. While as a cathode material, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu shows superior HER performance and it demands just 28 mV of overpotential value to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a lower Tafel slope value of 95.98 mV dec^-1. Hence, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu outperforms the commercial Pt/C and RuO₂ in terms of activity in HER and OER, respectively. Moreover, when serving as both the cathode and anode catalysts in an electrolyzer for total water splitting, the synthesized electrode only needs a cell potential of 1.55 V versus RHE to reach a current density of 20 mA cm^-2 and long-term durability for 25 h in alkaline media. To study the interfacial electron transfer, Mott-Schottky experiments were performed, representing that the electron is transferred from n-type NiFe-LDH to p-type CuS as a result of creating the p-n junction in NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu. The formation of this p-n junction allows the LDH layer to be more active toward the OH- adsorption and thereby could allow the OER or HER with a less energy input. This work affords another route to a cost effective, highly efficient catalyst toward producing clean energy across the globe.

Solar-Driven Catalytic Urea Oxidation for Environmental Remediation and Energy Recovery

The water-energy nexus is highly related to sustainable societal development. As one of the most abundant biowastes discharged into the environment, mild abatements and green conversions of urea wastewater have been widely investigated. Due to abundant sources, global distribution, and easy control, light-based catalytic strategies have become alternative on-site treatment approaches. After comprehensively surveying the recent progress, recent achievements of urea oxidation under light irradiation are reviewed herein. Several typical light-promoted systems employed in urea conversion, including photocatalysis, photo-electrocatalysis, photo-biocatalysis, and photocatalytic fuel cells, are meticulously introduced and discussed, from catalyst designs and medium conditions to established mechanisms. To realize the goal of sustainability, the chemical energy in urea-rich water could be utilized for the value-added production of hydrogen fuel and electricity. Finally, based on current developments, existing challenges are enumerated and developmental prospects in the future of light-driven urea conversion technologies are proposed.

Perovskite-Based Electrocatalysts for Cost-Effective Ultrahigh-Current-Density Water Splitting in Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Cell

Development of cost-effective water splitting technology that allows low-overpotential operation at high current density with non-precious catalysts is the key for large-scale hydrogen production. Herein, it is demonstrated that the versatile perovskite-based oxides, usually applied for operating at low current density and room temperature in alkaline solution, can be developed into low-cost, highly active and durable electrocatalysts for operating at high current densities in a zero-gap anion exchange membrane electrolyzer cell (AEMEC). The composite perovskite with mixed phases of Ruddlesden-Popper and single perovskite is applied as the anode in AEMEC and exhibits highly promising performance with an overall water-splitting current density of 2.01 A cm^-2 at a cell voltage of only 2.00 V at 60 °C with stable performance. The elevated temperature to promote anion diffusion in membrane boosts oxygen evolution kinetics by enhancing lattice-oxygen participation. The bifunctionality of perovskites further promises the more cost-effective symmetrical AEMEC configuration, and a primary cell with the composite perovskite as both electrodes delivers 3.00 A cm^-2 at a cell voltage of only 2.42 V. This work greatly expands the use of perovskites as robust electrocatalysts for industrial water splitting at high current density with great practical application merit.

CoFeNiMnZnB as a High-Entropy Metal Boride to Boost the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

High-entropy materials offer numerous advantages as catalysts, including a flexible composition to tune the catalytic activity and selectivity and a large variety of adsorption/reaction sites for multistep or multiple reactions. Herein, we report on the synthesis, properties, and electrocatalytic performance of an amorphous high-entropy boride based on abundant transition metals, CoFeNiMnZnB. This metal boride provides excellent performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), including a low overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, a reduced Tafel slope of 56.8 mV dec^-1, and very high stability. The outstanding OER performance of CoFeNiMnZnB is attributed to the synergistic interactions between the different metals, the leaching of Zn ions, the generation of oxygen vacancies, and the in situ formation of an amorphous oxyhydroxide at the CoFeNiMnZnB surface during the OER.

Triggering Lattice Oxygen Activation of Single-Atomic Mo Sites Anchored on Ni-Fe Oxyhydroxides Nanoarrays for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Tuning the reactivity of lattice oxygen is of significance for lowering the energy barriers and accelerating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, single-atomic Mo sites are anchored on Ni-Fe oxyhydroxide nanoarrays by a facile metal-organic-framework-derived strategy, exhibiting superior performance toward the OER in alkaline media. In situ electrochemical spectroscopy and isotope-labeling experiments reveal the involvement of lattice oxygen during OER cycles. Combining theoretical and experimental investigations of the electronic configuration, it is comprehensively confirmed that the incorporation of single-atomic Mo sites enables higher oxidation state of the metal and strengthened metal-oxygen hybridization, as well as the formation of oxidized ligand holes above the Fermi level. In a word, the considerable acceleration of water oxidation is achieved via enhancing the reactivity of lattice oxygen and triggering the lattice oxygen activation. This work may provide new insights for designing ideal electrocatalysts via tuning the chemical state and activating the anions ligands.

Engineering MoOx /MXene Hole Transfer Layers for Unexpected Boosting of Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

The development of semiconductor photoanodes is of great practical interest for the realization of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, MXene quantum dots (MQD) were grafted on a BiVO₄ substrate, then a MoO_x layer by combining an ultrathin oxyhydroxide oxygen evolution cocatalyst (OEC) was constructed as an integrated photoanode. The OEC/MoO_x /MQD/BiVO₄ array not only achieves a current density of 5.85 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), but also enhances photostability. From electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculations, high PEC performance is ascribed to the incorporation of MoO_x /MQD as hole transfer layers, retarding charge recombination, promoting hole transfer and accelerating water splitting kinetics. This proof-of-principle work not only demonstrates the potential utilization of hole transfer layers, but also sheds light on rational design and fabrication of integrated photoanodes for feasible solar energy conversion.

Defect-rich Fe-doped NiS/MoS2 heterostructured ultrathin nanosheets for efficient overall water splitting

With the demand for efficient hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts, defect-rich two-dimensional (2D) heterostructured materials attract increasing attention due to abundant active sites and facile mass/charge transfer. However, precise manipulation of lattice defects in a 2D heterostructured material is still a challenge. Herein, through pyrolytic sulfurization of a layered Fe-doped Ni/Mo MOF precursor, a series of defect-rich Fe-doped NiS/MoS₂ ultrathin nanosheets were obtained. For 0.1Fe-NiS/MoS₂, abundant lattice defects induced by Fe atoms provide more water adsorption sites, and intimate interface between NiS and MoS₂ can optimize the adsorption energy of a HER/OER intermediate. As a result, both HER and OER activities are significantly enhanced. The respective overpotential is 120 mV and 297 mV for the HER and OER. Small Tafel slopes of 69.0 mV dec^-1 and 54.7 mV dec^-1 indicate favorable electrochemical reaction kinetics. The catalytic performance of this material can be compared with those of 20% Pt/C and RuO₂ catalysts and top-rated MoS₂-based materials. For overall water splitting, only 1.66 V voltage is required to deliver 10 mA cm^-2. Long-term stability of 0.1Fe-NiS/MoS₂ presents a prospect for its practical application.

Preferential Co substitution on Ni sites in Ni–Fe oxide arrays enabling large-current-density alkaline oxygen evolution

Developing low-cost and high-activity transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a large current density is highly demanded for industrial application and remains a big challenge. Herein, we report vertically aligned cobalt doped Ni–Fe based oxide (Co–NiO/Fe₂O₃) arrays as a robust OER electrocatalyst via a simple method combining hydrothermal reaction with heat treatment. Density functional theory calculation and XRD Rietveld refinement reveal that Co preferentially occupies the Ni sites compared to Fe in the Ni–Fe based oxides. The electronic structures of the Co–NiO/Fe₂O₃ could be further optimized, leading to the improvement of the intrinsic electronic conductivity and d-band center energy level and the decrease in the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the OER, thus accelerating its OER electrocatalytic activity. The Co–NiO/Fe₂O₃ nanosheet arrays display state-of-the-art OER activities at a large current density for industrial demands among Fe–Co–Ni based oxide electrocatalysts, which only require an ultra-low overpotential of 230 mV at a high current density of 500 mA cm⁻², and exhibit superb durability at 500 mA cm⁻² for at least 300 h without obvious degradation. The Co–NiO/Fe₂O₃ nanosheet arrays also have a small Tafel slope of 33.9 mV dec⁻¹, demonstrating fast reaction kinetics. This work affords a simple and effective method to design and construct transition metal oxide based electrocatalysts for efficient water oxidation.

Co–NiO/Fe₂O₃ nanosheets featuring Co substitution on Ni sites can effectively regulate electronic structures and exhibit high OER activities with low overpotential (η₅₀₀ = 230 mV), small Tafel slope (33.9 mV dec⁻¹) and superb durability for 300 h.
