Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) To establish the distribution pattern of cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) and propose optimized clinical target volume (CTV) boundaries specific to oral/ oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OSCC/OPSCC). MATERIALS/METHODS 531 patients with pathologically confirmed OSCC/OPSCC were enrolled from January 2013 to June 2022. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the minimal distance from the lesion's edge to the body's midline: ≤1 cm or > 1 cm. The geometric center of cervical metastatic LN was marked on a template CT. LN distribution probability maps were established. The relationships between the LN distribution and consensus guidelines were analyzed to propose modifications for CTV boundaries specific to OSCC/OPSCC. RESULTS A total of 1962 positive LNs were enrolled. Compared with the > 1 cm group, the ≤ 1 cm group has following feature tendencies: male smokers, younger, median organs, large gross lesion, infiltrative growth pattern, contralateral LNM. The most frequently involved level of LNM was ipsilateral II, but ipsilateral Ib had the highest involvement rate in the > 1 cm OSCC group. In addition, tongue cancer had a higher incidence of LN extranodal extension (ENE), which mainly distributes in ipsilateral level II. The skip metastasis was prone to from level III to Vb (3.5 %) in LN(+)/ENE (-), and level Ib to VIa (3.7 %) in LN(+)/ENE (+). Accordingly, we proposed the following modifications: 1. only including lateral and posterior margin of submandibular gland within 5 mm; 2. retracting posterior boundary of level II to front edge of levator scapula muscle, and descending the upper boundary to transverse process of C2 vertebra only for OSCC; 3. including posterior third of thyroglossal muscle or anterior edge of sternocleidomastoid muscle; 4. sparing level Va in case of only level II involvement; 5. including upper area of the thyroid cartilage plate in case of level Ib LN(+)/ENE (+); 6. sparing level VIIa is considered. CONCLUSION This is the first description of LN topographic spread patterns for OSCC/OPSCC. Modified CTV for prophylactic irradiation was proposed to spare the organs at risk and minimize adverse effects.

Abstract
The metal vanadium has superior physical and chemical properties and has a wide range of applications in many fields of modern industry. The increasing demand for vanadium worldwide has led to the need to guarantee sustainable vanadium production. The smelting process of vanadium and titanium magnetite produces vanadium-bearing steel slag, a key material for vanadium extraction. Herein, vanadium production, consumption, and steel slag properties are discussed. A detailed review of methods for extracting vanadium from vanadium-bearing steel slag is presented, including the most commonly used roasting and leaching method, and direct leaching, bioleaching and enhanced leaching methods are also described. Finally, the rules and regulations of steel slag management are introduced. In general, it is necessary to further develop environmentally friendly vanadium extraction methods and technologies from vanadium containing solid wastes. This study provides research directions for the technology of vanadium extraction from steel slag.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We investigated the dynamics of eosinophil depletion during definitive concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT) and their association with the prognosis of stage Ⅱ-Ⅳa nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fuzzy C-means algorithm (FCMA) assessed longitudinal trends in circulating eosinophil counts (CECs) of 1225 patients throughout the period of radical radiotherapy. The prognostic impact on patients' survival was evaluated with Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional risk model was used to determine the hazard ratio for adverse prognostic effects in grades of eosinophil depletion. The interactive effect of pre-treatment CECs and CCRT on outcomes was evaluated using HRs within the framework of Cox regression models. RESULTS Three grades of eosinophil depletion, as defined by the interaction between dynamic types of CECs in the period of treatment and the value of CECs at the termination of treatment, significantly stratified the poor prognosis in terms of progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) [1.57-fold (P = 0.001), 1.69-fold (P = 0.007), and 1.51-fold (P = 0.019) for G1, 2.4-fold (P < 0.001), 2.76-fold (P < 0.001), and 2.31-fold (P < 0.001) for G2, as compared with G0]. Furthermore, high levels of pre-treatment CECs acted as the strongest protective factor against severe depletion grade (G0 vs. G2, HR = 0.20, P = 0.005; G1 vs. G2, HR = 0.14, P < 0.001). However, compared with radiotherapy alone, the benefit from CCRT was attenuated in patients with high pre-treatment CECs. CONCLUSIONS CECs reduction after treatment in patients with NPC may be helpful in the clinical setting to aid in assessing the prognosis for standard treatment of NPC.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) We investigated the dynamics of eosinophil depletion and recovery during definitive concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT) and how they affect the prognosis of stage II-IVA nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. MATERIALS/METHODS A total of 1225 patients with pathologically proven NPC from 2013 to 2019 were enrolled. Fuzzy C-Means Clustering (FCM) was used to assess trends in eosinophil during CCRT longitudinally and to grade eosinophil decline during treatment in combination with absolute eosinophil counts (AECs) at the end of CCRT. Grade G0 refers to patients with no decreasing trend in eosinophils and AECs >0.05×109 cells/L, grade G1 refers to patients with a decreasing trend in eosinophils or AECs between 0-0.05×109 cells/L, grade G2 refers to patients with a decreasing trend in eosinophils and AECs between 0-0.05×109 cells/L. Progression-free survival (PFS) is the primary outcome measure, with overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) as secondary outcome measures. A Cox proportional risk model was used to determine the hazard ratio for adverse prognostic effects in declining grades of eosinophil. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 4.1 years, 376 (30.69%) patients experienced disease progression events. The grade of eosinophil reduction after CCRT was significantly associated with PFS, OS, and DMFS but not with LRFS. After adjusting for demographics, clinical baseline indicators, tumor characteristics, and treatment characteristics, a 1.57-fold (p = 0.001), 1.69-fold (p = 0.007), and 1.51-fold (p = 0.019) increase in the risk of developing PFS, OS, and DMFS was observed for G1 compared with G0, whereas a 2.4-fold (p < 0.001), 2.76-fold (p < 0.001), and 2.31-fold (p < 0.001) increase in the risk of developing PFS, OS, and DMFS was observed for G2. Moreover, among patients with G0, treatment with CCRT with a cumulative dose of platinum-based chemotherapy < 200 mg/m2 resulted in PFS, OS, and DMFS that were not inferior to CCRT with cumulative doses ≥ 200 mg/m2. CONCLUSION Eosinophil is an easily detectable and inexpensive biomarker that may be useful in the clinical setting to aid in assessing the prognosis for standard treatment of NPC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the therapeutic effect and mechanism of the traditional Chinese medicine Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk in rats with complete Freund's adjuvant-induced rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS The chemical targets and RA targets of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk were acquired by the network pharmacological method. The complete Freund's adjuvant-induced rat RA model was used to further explore the mechanism of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk in improving RA. Pathological changes in the volume of toes, body weight and synovial tissues of joints as well as serum inflammatory factor levels before and after the intervention of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk were investigated. The key metabolic pathways were screened by correlations between metabolites and key targets. Finally, a quantitative analysis of key targets and metabolites was experimentally validated. RESULTS Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk administration increased body weight, mitigated foot swelling and downregulated inflammatory cytokine levels in model rats. The histopathology showed that treatment with Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk can induce inflammatory cell infiltration and synovial hyperplasia and obviously reduce cartilage injuries, thus improving arthritis symptoms in rats. According to the network pharmacology-metabonomics association analysis results, the purine metabolic signaling pathway might be the key pathway for RA intervention with Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk. Targeted metabonomics, Western blotting (WB) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT‒PCR) assays showed that the recombinant adenosine deaminase (ADA) mRNA expression level and metabolic level of inosine in Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk administration group were lower than those of the model group. This reflected that Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk could improve RA by downregulating ADA mRNA expression levels and the metabolic level of inosine in the purine signaling pathway. CONCLUSION Based on the "component-disease-target" association analysis, this study concludes that Saposhnikovia divaricata (Trucz.) Schischk improves complete Freund's adjuvant-induced RA symptoms in rats mainly by downregulating ADA mRNA expression levels in the purine metabolic signaling pathway, mitigating foot swelling, improving the levels of serum inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α), and decreasing the ADA protein expression level to intervene in purine metabolism.

Abstract
Background Despite its effectiveness, the standard course of chemoradiation for the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) results in considerable treatment-related adverse effects. Studies proved that HPV-positive OPC is very sensitive to radiotherapy. Using de-escalation therapy as a new strategy is critical to maintaining positive outcomes while alleviating side effects. However, some studies hold that reduced dose causes insufficient effect on tumor killing. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis of survival and adverse reactions in patients with HPV-related OPC by retrospective analysis and evaluated the therapeutic effect of reducing the radiation dose. Methods Data were double-selected and extracted by searching seven electronic databases, Original studies in all language treated HPV-associated OPC with reduced-dose and standard-dose therapies were included. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and incidence rates of adverse events were obtained by pooling analyses. Statistical analyses were performed using RStudio Version 1.1.383 (RStudio, Boston, MA, USA) via the Meta-Analysis R Package (metafor). Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic and the Cochran Q test. We used Stata (version 15.0) for forest graph. Results Thirteen studies were included in this meta-analysis, involving a dose range of 66-70 Gy for the standard treatment regimen and <66 Gy for the reduced-dose group. There was no significant difference in the age of the patients in the standard and the reduced treatment groups (60.9±5.9 vs. 58.6±2.4 years). Nine studies were included as standard cohort and thirteen studies were enrolled as reduced-dose cohort. The 2- and 3-year overall survival rates in the reduced-dose group (95.66% and 91.51%, respectively) were superior to those in the standard-dose group (88.36% and 87.46%, respectively). There was no significant difference in PFS between the two groups. A systematic review of articles on dose reduction and the standard dose was also conducted. The most common complication in reduced-dose radiation was oral mucositis (36.4%), followed by decreased white blood cell (WBC) count (30.5%) and dry mouth (29.1%). Conclusions Reducing the radiation dose in patients with HPV-related OPC substantially alleviates the treatment toxicities and optimizes the quality of life of patients while at the same time maintaining favorable oncologic outcomes.

Abstract
Background and Objective Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the fundamental anti-cancer regimens by means of inducing in situ tumor vaccination and driving a systemic anti-tumor immune response. It can affect the tumor microenvironment (TME) components consisting of blood vessels, immunocytes, fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix (ECM), and might subsequently suppress anti-tumor immunity through expression of molecules such as programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1). Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), especially anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 therapies, have been regarded as effective in the reinvigoration of the immune system and another major cancer treatment. Experimentally, combination of RT and ICIs therapy shows a greater synergistic effect than either therapy alone. Methods We performed a narrative review of the literature in the PubMed database. The research string comprised various combinations of "radiotherapy", "programmed death-ligand 1", "microenvironment", "exosome", "myeloid cell", "tumor cell", "tumor immunity". The database was searched independently by two authors. A third reviewer mediated any discordance of the results of the two screeners. Key Content and Findings RT upregulates PD-L1 expression in tumor cells, tumor-derived exosomes (TEXs), myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and macrophages. The signaling pathways correlated to PD-L1 expression in tumor cells include the DNA damage signaling pathway, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway, interferon gamma (IFN-γ) pathway, cGAS-STING pathway, and JAK/STATs pathway. Conclusions PD-L1 upregulation post-RT is found not only in tumor cells but also in the TME and is one of the mechanisms of tumor evasion. Therefore, further studies are necessary to fully comprehend this biological process. Meanwhile, combination of therapies has been shown to be effective, and novel approaches are to be developed as adjuvant to RT and ICIs therapy.

Abstract
Background and purpose Radiotherapy (RT) is a double-edged sword in regulating immune responses. This study aimed to investigate the impact of thoracic RT on circulating eosinophils and its association with patient outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and methods This retrospective study included 240 patients with advanced NSCLC treated with definitive thoracic RT from January 2012 to January 2020. Statistics included Kaplan-Meier analysis of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), multivariate Cox analyses to identify significant variables, and Spearman’s correlation to qualify the relationship between dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters and EIR. Results Absolute eosinophil counts (AECs) showed an increasing trend during RT and an obvious peak in the 1st month after RT. Thresholds of eosinophil increase ratio (EIR) at the 1st month after RT for both OS and PFS were 1.43. Patients with high EIR above 1.43 experienced particularly favorable clinical outcomes (five-year OS: 21% versus 10%, P<0.0001; five-year PFS: 10% versus 8%, P=0.014), but may not derive PFS benefit from the addition of chemotherapy to RT. The higher a patient’s EIR, the larger the potential benefit in the absence of chemotherapy. DVH parameters including heart mean dose and heart V10 were negatively associated with EIR. None of these DVH parameters was correlated with the clinical outcomes. Conclusion EIR may serve as a potential biomarker to predict OS and PFS in NSCLC patients treated with RT. These findings require prospective studies to evaluate the role of such prognostic marker to identify patients at risk to tailor interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) is the end stage of the development of heart disease, whose prognosis is poor. The previous research of our team indicated that the formulae containing Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata and Lepidii Semen Descurainiae Semen (ALRP-LSDS) could inhibit myocardial hypertrophy, inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis, delay myocardial remodeling (REM), and improve the prognosis of patients with HF effectively. In order to explore the mechanism of ALRP-LSDS for the treatment of HF, a combined approach of network pharmacology and molecular docking was conducted. METHODS Public database TCMSP was used to screen the active compounds of ALRP-LSDS. The targets of screened active compounds were obtained from the TCMSP database and predicted using the online analysis tool PharmMapper. The targets of HF were obtained from 6 databases including GeneCards, OMIM, DrugBank, TTD, PharmGKB, and DisGeNET. Protein-protein interaction and enrichment analysis were performed, respectively, by STRING and Metascape online tools after merging the targets of active compounds and HF. Cytoscape software was used to conduct networks. Finally, molecular docking was performed by Vina to verify the correlation between key targets and active compounds. RESULTS Final results indicated that the active compounds including β-sitosterol, isorhamnetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and (R)-norcoclaurine, the targets including AKT1, CASP3, and MAPK1 might be the main active compounds and key targets of ALRP-LSDS for the treatment of HF separately. The binding ability of AKT1 to the main active compounds was better compared with the other 2 key targets, which means it might be more critical. The pathways including AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, Pathways in cancer, and Fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis might play important roles in the treatment of HF with ALRP-LSDS. In general, ALRP-LSDS could inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis, delay REM, and improve cardiac function through multicompound, multitarget, and multipathway, which contributes to the treatment of HF. CONCLUSIONS Based on the combined approach of network pharmacology and molecular docking, this study screened out the main active compounds, key targets, and main pathways of ALRP-LSDS for the treatment of HF, and revealed its potential mechanisms, providing a theoretical basis for further research.

Abstract
Flexible optoelectronic synaptic devices that functionally imitate the neural behavior with tunable optoelectronic characteristics are crucial to the development of advanced bioinspired neural networks. In this work, amorphous oxide-decorated GaN nanowire arrays (GaOx@GaN NWAs) are prepared on flexible graphite paper. A GaOx@GaN NWA-based flexible device has tunable persistent photoconductivity (PPC) and shows a conversible fast/slow decay process (SDP). Photoconductivity can be modulated by single or double light pulses with different illumination powers and biases. PPC gives rise to the high-performance SDP such as a long decay time of 2.3 × 105 s. The modulation mechanism is proposed and discussed. Our results reveal an innovative and efficient strategy to produce decorated NWAs on a flexible substrate with tunable optoelectronic properties and exhibit potential for flexible neuromorphic system applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) formulae in the treatment of insomnia compared with those of conventional western medicines. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy and safety of Banxia formulae in the treatment of insomnia were searched from the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP), and Wanfang database. The literature collected was from the time when the databases were established to April 2020. Quality assessment and meta-analysis were conducted by using Cochrane bias risk assessment tool and RevMan 5.2, respectively. Publication bias was assessed by Egger's test. RESULTS Fourteen RCTs with 910 participants were identified. A total of 46 traditional Chinese medicines involving 2 different dosage forms were used in the included studies. Meta-analysis indicated that Banxia formulae had more significant effects on improving the total effective rate (RR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.31), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, MD = -1.05, 95% CI -1.63 to -0.47), and the TCM syndrome score (SMD = -0.78, 95% CI -1.18 to -0.39). Meanwhile, on reducing adverse events, Banxia formulae also showed an advantage (RR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.93). CONCLUSION According to the current studies, the efficacy of Banxia formulae in the treatment of insomnia is better than that of the conventional western medicines, and its safety is relatively stable. However, due to the limitations of this study, further research and evaluation are needed.

Abstract
Abstract Objective To investigate the frequency distribution features of 11 Y-SNP of Guizhou Shui ethnic group, explore its genetic relationship with other ethnic groups and evaluate its forensic application value. Methods Multiplex amplification of the 11 Y-SNP of samples of 180 unrelated male individuals from Guizhou Shui ethnic group was performed with microsequencing technique. The frequency of haplogroup was calculated by direct counting method, and principal component analysis (PCA) of Guizhou Shui ethnic group and reference ethnic groups was performed by using Multi-variate statistical package (MVSP). The Fst genetic distance between Guizhou Shui ethnic group and other ethnic groups was calculated with Arlequin v3.5. The phylogenetic tree was established with MEGA 4.0 software according to the Fst value. Results Six types of Y chromosome haplogroups were observed in total. Among which, the distribution frequency of O-M175 haplogroup was the highest (71.11%), followed by C-M130 (25.00%), and D-M174 (3.89%). O1b-M268 (31.11%) and O2a2-IMS-JST021354 (28.33%) had a relatively high distribution frequency in O haplogroup. The paternal relationship between Guizhou Shui ethnic group and Guizhou Gelao ethnic group in the same language group was the closest. Conclusion The distribution of Y-SNP haplogroup of the Shui ethnic group in Guizhou has certain specificity, which can provide basic data for forensic biogeographic inference.

Abstract
Regenerating genes (Reg) have been found during the search for factors involved in pancreatic islet regeneration. Our recent study discovered that pancreatic β-cell-specific overexpression of Reg3β protects against streptozotocin (Stz) -induced diabetes in mice. To investigate its potential roles in the treatment of diabetes, we produced a recombinant Reg3β protein and provided evidence that it is active in promoting islet β-cell survival against Stz- triggered cell death. Though ineffective in alleviating preexisting diabetes, pretreatment of recombinant Reg3β was capable of minimizing the Stz-induced hyperglycemia and weight loss, by preserving serum and pancreatic insulin levels, and islet β-cell mass. No obvious changes were observed in the rate of cell proliferation and hypertrophy in α- or acinar-cells after treatment with recombinant Reg3β. The underlying mechanism of Reg3β-mediated protection seems to involve Akt activation which upregulates Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL levels and consequently promotes cell survival.

Abstract
TRPA1 channels are non-selective cation channels that could be activated by plant-derived pungent products, including gingerol, a main active constituent of ginger. Ginger could improve the digestive function; however whether ginger improves the digestive function through activating TRPA1 receptor in gastrointestinal tract has not been investigated. In the present study, gingerol was used to stimulate cell lines (RIN14B or STC-1) while depletion of extracellular calcium. TRPA1 inhibitor (rethenium red) and TRPA1 gene silencing via TRPA1-specific siRNA were also used for mechanistic studies. The intracellular calcium and secretion of serotonin or cholecystokinin were measured by fura-2/AM and ELISA. Stimulation of those cells with gingerol increased intracellular calcium levels and the serotonin or cholecystokinin secretion. The gingerol-induced intracellular calcium increase and secretion (serotonin or cholecystokinin) release were completely blocked by ruthenium red, EGTA, and TRPA1-specific siRNA. In summary, our results suggested that gingerol derived from ginger might improve the digestive function through secretion releasing from endocrine cells of the gut by inducing TRPA1-mediated calcium influx.

Abstract
Regenerating gene 3α (Reg3α) protein is a trophic factor that stimulates cell and tissue proliferation, neogenesis and also acts against apoptosis and necrosis. In order to explore the potential roles of recombinant Reg3α (rReg3α), we produced a mature rReg3α polypeptide for direct administration in l-arginine (L-Arg) induced acute pancreatitis (AP) in mice. Our results showed that rReg3α stimulated cell proliferation through Erk1/2 and p38 phosphorylation and also cyclin D1 upregulation mediated by Akt/ATF-2 signaling. Moreover, rReg3α administration significantly reduced the pancreatic damage caused by L-Arg injection, as shown in histological examination and serum amylase, lipase and C-reactive protein (CRP) assays. Not only acinar cell necrosis but also apoptosis found in the pancreas of AP mice were alleviated by rReg3α. Finally, upregulated Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL and suppressed poly (ADP-ribose) synthetase/polymerase (PARP) levels were detected as being relevant to the mechanism of rReg3α protection. We therefore conclude that rReg3α acts as a protective polypeptide against AP in mice by enhancing Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expressions and suppressing PARP level.

Abstract
Nao-Qing solution has been shown to be clinically effective in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The purpose of this study was to improve the pharmacokinetics and brain uptake of Nao-Qing, administered as an oil-in-water microemulsion. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were given Nao-Qing microemulsion by intranasal or intragastric routes. Samples of blood, brain, heart, liver, lung and kidney were collected at pre-determined time intervals, and the contents of ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 (active ingredients of the Nao-Qing microemulsion) were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that contents of ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 in Nao-Qing microemulsion was 8475.13 ± 54.61 μg/ml and 6633.42 ± 527.27 μg/ml, respectively, and that the particle size, pH and viscosity of the microemulsion were 19.9 ± 5.07 nm, 6.1 and 3.056 × 10(-3 )Pas, respectively. Absorption of ginsenoside Rg1 was higher than that of ginsenoside Rb1, which was barely detectable after intragastric administration; furthermore, the concentration of ginsenoside Rg1 in blood and other tissues at each time point was lower for intragastric than for intranasal administration. Compared with intragastric administration, intranasal administration resulted in a shorter tmax (0.08 versus 1 h), a higher Cmax (16.65 versus 11.29 μg/ml), and a higher area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) (592.91 versus 101.70 μgċh/ml) in the brain. The relative rates of uptake (Re) and the ratio of peak concentration (Ce) in the brain were 126.31% and 147.48% for ginsenoside Rg1, respectively. These data illustrate that intranasal administration can promote the absorption of drugs in Nao-Qing microemulsion and achieve fast effect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To prepare PEG-PLA polymeric micelles loaded with vinpocetine (VP). METHODS VP micelles were prepared by thin-film hydration method, single factors affecting drug loading content, encapsulation efficiency, productivity, particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) such as dosage, type of organic solvent, quantity of organic solvent, hydration temperature, hydration speed, amount of hydration water, hydration time were investigated, and the optimum technology was obtained. The mean particle size and PDI were determined by DLS. The drug loading content, encapsulation efficiency, productivity of VP micelles were investigated by UV. RESULTS The drug loading content and particle size of VP micelles were 20.35% and 118.3 nm, respectively. CONCLUSION The technology of VP micelles prepared by thin-film hydration method is practical and simple. It's valuable to be further studied.

Abstract
In order to examine the effect of radiation on growing tissue, especially the fibroblasts and their end-product, the collagen fibres, tails from 24 mice were irradiated at an age of 8 days with 20 Gy and 30 Gy (60Co). Tails from 18 animals served as controls. Six mice from each group were sacrificed on day 8, 20 and 30. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the fibroblasts and the collagen fibrils. Non-irradiated fibroblasts had a nucleus rich in chromatin and an abundant endoplasmic reticulum with cisternae and condensing vacuoles. On day 20, approximately 50%, and on day 30, 25% of the fibroblasts irradiated with 30 Gy had a sparse endoplasmic reticulum pointing to a reduction of protein synthesis. While, on day 20, the fibrils irradiated with 20 Gy and with 30 Gy had significantly larger diameters compared to the controls, on day 30, the irradiated fibrils had a notably smaller diameter compared to the controls; 30 Gy-fibrils were larger than the 20 Gy-fibrils on both days. On day 20, the binding mean value of the 30 Gy-fibrils exceeded that of the controls and was significantly higher than that of the 20 Gy-fibrils, which was lower, though not significantly, than the controls. On day 30, the banding mean value of the 30 Gy-fibrils was notably lower than the control; and the value of the 20 Gy-fibrils was significantly lower than that of the 30 Gy-fibrils. The results are explained as an edema together with an inhibitory effect on the protein synthesis of the fibroblasts caused by the irradiation. This deduction is further supported by light microscopy of the tails.

Abstract
We examined the differences in molar absorptivity of 4-NP obtained using different kits for ALP measurement and different instruments. The apparent molar absorptivity of 4-NP in the same reaction solution determined by six different instruments was 15.98, 16.72, 16.06, 17.00, 16.27, 17.62 and that using four different reaction solution kits for ALP with the same instrument was 16.90, 17.38, 17.72, 16.11. We measured ALP in three serum samples with six instruments using the same kit and in twelve serum samples with the same instrument using four kits. ALP activities measured using the same molar absorptivity value differed with the instrument(p < 0.01). However, those measured using the apparent molar absorptivity value for each instrument revealed no significant differences(p > 0.05). In conclusion, we suggest that standard material should be contained in each kit for enzyme measurement and the apparent epsilon for each kit and instrument should be obtained to minimize the systematic error caused by using the same epsilon in different laboratories.

Abstract
This study tested the effect of repeated intratumoural injection with recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) on inhibition of growth of breast cancer and on induction of apoptosis of tumour cells. The tumour cell line LDLX43 was used to induce breast cancer in Wistar rats. Group I (10 rats) was the control. Group II (12 rats) received repeated intratumoural injection with rIL-2 and TILs. rIL-2 at the dose of 5 x 10(5) IU/day was given for 7 days, and 1 x 10(7) TILs were injected on the second day of each rIL-2 therapy, for a treatment session. Overall, two treatment sessions of immunotherapy with rIL-2 and TILs were given in all treated animals. Rapid increased tumour volume was found in the control group. In the treated group the total response rate was 42%, of which 25% tumours showed partial regression and 17% tumours reached complete remission where infiltration of plenty of T lymphocytes was detected, indicating that T cell-mediated antitumour immunity is primarily responsible for tumour rejection. Further investigation showed the repeated immunotherapy using intratumoural injection with rIL-2 and TILs could induce the development of apoptosis of breast cancer cells.

Abstract
Specimens taken at surgery from 15 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus were examined with scanning electron microscopy. Nine patients were treated with chemotherapy (cisplatin + 5-fluorouracil), surgery and radiotherapy; one received preoperative radiotherapy only; and the remaining five primary surgery only. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on specimens of both tumor tissue and the mucosa at least 5 cm from the tumor. In adjacent non-tumor tissue, damage due to treatment was observed in the form of changes in microridges and increased cell loss. In tumor tissue, the degree of damage was correlated to tumor response to treatment. For patients with no residual tumor after treatment, the ultrastructure was normalized with a low tumor score, while for patients with residual tumor, the score was high.

Abstract
The relationships among myocardial ATP, intracellular pH, and ischemic contracture in Langendorff-perfused rat hearts were investigated by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy during total global normothermic ischemia while the left ventricular pressure was recorded continuously via an intraventricular balloon. Glucose-perfused hearts (n = 63) were divided into five groups based on the time of onset of contracture (TOC), and three other groups of hearts were treated to vary the ischemic glycogen availability. ATP levels, which showed no evidence of accelerated ATP depletion during contracture, were significant and variable at TOC. Intracellular pH initially declined and then leveled off at TOC, with lower final pH in hearts with later TOC. We conclude that contracture began when anaerobic glycolysis (and thus glycolytic ATP synthesis) stopped. These results, though consistent with the concept that ischemic contracture in normal hearts results from rigor bond formation due to low ATP levels at the myofibrils, suggest that TOC is more closely related to glycolytic ATP production than to total cellular ATP content, thus providing evidence of some degree of subcellular compartmentation or metabolite channeling. In glycolytically inhibited hearts, the quite early contracture may have a Ca2+ component.
