Clusters Induced Electron Redistribution to Tune Oxygen Reduction Activity of Transition Metal Single-Atom for Metal-Air Batteries

Recent Progress of pH-Responsive Peptides, Polypeptides, and Their Supramolecular Assemblies for Biomedical Applications

Peptides and polypeptides feature a variety of active functional groups on their side chains (including carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, amino, and thiol groups), enabling diverse chemical modifications. This versatility makes them highly valuable in stimuli-responsive systems. Notably, pH-responsive peptides and polypeptides, due to their ability to respond to pH changes, hold significant promise for applications in cellular pathology and tumor targeting. Extensive researches have highlighted the potentials of low pH insertion peptides (pHLIPs), peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs), and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) in biomedicine. Peptide self-assemblies, with their structural stability, ease of regulation, excellent biocompatibility, and biodegradability, offer immense potentials in the development of novel materials and biomedical applications. We also explore specific examples of their applications in drug delivery, tumor targeting, and tissue engineering, while discussing future challenges and potential advancements in the field of pH-responsive self-assembling peptide-based biomaterials.

Bioinspired molecular catalysts with a unique tricopper architecture for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction

In situ growth of intertwined trinuclear copper complexes (nCu3) on a cellulose-derived carbon support (CMC) produced a high-performance electrocatalyst (CMC-nCu3) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which demonstrated superior performance in zinc-air batteries compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work highlights the importance of copper-based molecular catalysts with rich and intertwined tricopper structures for boosting both ORR activity and stability.

Boosting oxygen reduction durability by embedding Co9S8 nanoparticles into Co single atoms anchored porous carbon frameworks

Developing an efficient and low-cost oxygen reduction electrocatalyst is essential for the application of aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we report a facile adsorption-confined pyrolysis strategy to fabricate the hybrid electrocatalyst (denoted as Co9S8/CoSA-PC) by embedding Co9S8 nanoparticles into Co single atoms (Co-SAs) anchored porous carbon sheets for boosting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) durability. In this strategy, the Co2+ ions are first absorbed into oxygen-rich porous carbon nanosheets and further form the Co-SAs with the help of thiourea in the following pyrolysis procedure, which is believed to be able to confine the generated Co9S8 nanoparticles into carbon frameworks due to their interface interaction. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of different components, the obtained Co9S8/CoSA-PC electrocatalyst for ORR exhibits outstanding catalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V and a distinguished long-term durability with a current retention of 80 % after cycling 80 h under alkaline conditions, which is superior to commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the assembled ZABs with Co9S8/CoSA-PC as cathodic catalyst deliver a high specific capacity of 764 mAh gZn-1 at 10 mA cm-2 and the outstanding peak power density of up to 221.4 mW cm-2. This work provides a novel structure design strategy to prepare transition metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts with superior durability for ORR.

Inhibiting Demetalation of Fe─N─C via Mn Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Zinc-Air Batteries

Demetalation caused by the electrochemical dissolution of metallic Fe atoms is a major challenge for the practical application of Fe─N─C catalysts. Herein, an efficient single metallic Mn active site is constructed to improve the strength of the Fe─N bond, inhibiting the demetalation effect of Fe─N─C. Mn acts as an electron donor inducing more delocalized electrons to reduce the oxidation state of Fe by increasing the electron density, thereby enhancing the Fe─N bond and inhibiting the electrochemical dissolution of Fe. The oxygen reduction reaction pathway for the dissociation of Fe─Mn dual sites can overcome the high energy barriers to direct O─O bond dissociation and modulate the electronic states of Fe─N4 sites. The resulting FeMn─N─C exhibits excellent ORR activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.92 V in alkaline electrolytes. FeMn─N─C as a cathode catalyst for Zn-air batteries has a cycle stability of 700 h at 25 °C and a long cycle stability of more than 210 h under extremely cold conditions at -40 °C. These findings contribute to the development of efficient and stable metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for various energy devices.

Decoration of Ag Species into Reduced Graphene Oxide Foam as a Superelastic and Robust Host toward Stable Zn Metal Anodes under Dwell-Fatigue Condition

Deep-sea equipment usually operates under dwell-fatigue condition, which means the equipped energy storage devices must survive under the changing pressure. Special mechanical designs should be considered to maintain the electrochemical performance of electrodes under this extreme condition. In this work, an effective assembly strategy is proposed to accommodate the dwell-fatigue loading using Ag decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) foam (denoted as AGF) as a superelastic and robust Zn host. The wet-press assembly process enables the formation of highly porous and robust framework. The strong synergetic effect between rGO and Ag further guarantees AGF's superelasticity and ultrahigh mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the homogeneously distributed Ag species on the rGO sheets act as zincophilic sites to effectively facilitate Zn plating. Furthermore, AGF offers enough space to address the expansion during the charge and discharge cycles. As expected, the symmetrical cell using this AGF@Zn host demonstrates a long lifespan over 400 h at a depth-of-discharge of 50%. It is worth mentioning that the superelastic AGF host realizes stable Zn plating/stripping under varying pressures.

Enhancing interfacial electron transfer through PANI electron bridge for tailoring dynamic reconstruction and achieving high-performance water oxidation

Tailoring the dynamic reconstruction of transition metal compounds into highly active oxyhydroxides through surface electron state modification is crucial for advancing water oxidation, yet remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a unique polyaniline (PANI) electron bridge was integrated into the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/layer double hydroxides (LDHs) heterojunction to expedite electron transfer from MOFs to LDHs, facilitating electron accumulation at the metal sites within MOF and electron-deficient LDHs. This configuration promotes the surface dynamic reconstruction of LDHs into highly active oxyhydroxides while safeguarding the MOF from corrosion in harsh environments over extended periods. The optimized electronic structure modification of both MOFs and LDHs enhances reaction kinetics. The superior MIL-88B(Fe)@PANI@NiCo LDH catalyst achieved 10 mA∙cm-2 at an overpotential of 202 mV and demonstrated stable operation for 120 h at this current density. This research introduces an innovative approach for guiding electron transfer and dynamic catalyst reconstruction by constructing a PANI electron bridge, potentially paving the way for more efficient catalytic systems.

Selective oxygen reduction reaction: mechanism understanding, catalyst design and practical application

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key component for many clean energy technologies and other industrial processes. However, the low selectivity and the sluggish reaction kinetics of ORR catalysts have hampered the energy conversion efficiency and real application of these new technologies mentioned before. Recently, tremendous efforts have been made in mechanism understanding, electrocatalyst development and system design. Here, a comprehensive and critical review is provided to present the recent advances in the field of the electrocatalytic ORR. The two-electron and four-electron transfer catalytic mechanisms and key evaluation parameters of the ORR are discussed first. Then, the up-to-date synthetic strategies and in situ characterization techniques for ORR electrocatalysts are systematically summarized. Lastly, a brief overview of various renewable energy conversion devices and systems involving the ORR, including fuel cells, metal-air batteries, production of hydrogen peroxide and other chemical synthesis processes, along with some challenges and opportunities, is presented.

Asymmetrically Coordinated Calcium Single Atom for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction

S-block single atoms represent an ideal catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as they can suppress the Fenton reaction. However, the symmetry of the s/p orbitals tends to generate either an excessively strong or weak interaction with intermediates. Herein, Ca single atoms coordinated with -S, -OP, and three N atoms (Ca/NPS-HC) were fabricated to modulate the adsorption of intermediates and promote the efficiency of s-block ORR catalysts. The experimental results from ORR demonstrated that the Ca/NPS-HC catalyst exhibited outstanding catalytic capability with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V, a kinetic current density of 56.6 mA cm-2 at 0.85 V, and a Tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1, outperforming commercial Pt/C. The detailed mechanistic studies revealed that the asymmetric coordination of Ca single atoms led to the symmetry-breaking of electron distribution in Ca single atoms, attenuating the s-p hybridization from the intermediate adsorption process, and thereby minimizing the energy barrier of the whole ORR.

Cobalt-Copper-Embedded Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanostructures Derived from Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks as Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

In recent years, researchers have focused on developing zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) as an alternative to Pt electrocatalysts for various applications, including water splitting, lithium-air batteries, zinc-air batteries, and fuel cells. In this study, we synthesized CoCu-ZIF to be used as a precursor in the development of cathode catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Hydrazine played a crucial role in maintaining uniformity in the development and particle size of the ZIF-67 structures. Moreover, it facilitated the rapid formation of the ZIF-67 structures at higher temperatures. A unique pseudorhombic dodecahedral morphology was obtained at a Co/Cu molar ratio of 7:3. Among all the synthesized N-doped carbon nanostructures embedded with Co and Cu nanoparticles, CoCu@NC-750, pyrolyzed at 750 °C, showed superior ORR catalytic performance. This catalyst exhibited a notably higher half-wave potential of 0.816 V and demonstrated a clear 4-electron transfer mechanism. The overpotential of CoCu@NC-750 shifted by only 11 mV over 10,000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, whereas a 55 mV shift was observed for Pt/C. CoCu@NC-750 exhibited a ∼0.8% decrease in current density during a 12-h ORR, in contrast to the 8.3% decline shown by Pt/C. This superior catalytic activity and stability can be attributed to factors such as higher oxygen adsorption induced by the N-doped carbon layer due to the localized changes in electron density and the enhanced stability of the bimetallic core. Our findings suggest that CoCu@NC-750 is a promising alternative to Pt/C in fuel cell cathodes.

Advances of Synergistic Electrocatalysis Between Single Atoms and Nanoparticles/Clusters

Combining single atoms with clusters or nanoparticles is an emerging tactic to design efficient electrocatalysts. Both synergy effect and high atomic utilization of active sites in the composite catalysts result in enhanced electrocatalytic performance, simultaneously provide a radical analysis of the interrelationship between structure and activity. In this review, the recent advances of single-atomic site catalysts coupled with clusters or nanoparticles are emphasized. Firstly, the synthetic strategies, characterization, dynamics and types of single atoms coupled with clusters/nanoparticles are introduced, and then the key factors controlling the structure of the composite catalysts are discussed. Next, several clean energy catalytic reactions performed over the synergistic composite catalysts are illustrated. Eventually, the encountering challenges and recommendations for the future advancement of synergistic structure in energy-transformation electrocatalysis are outlined.

Self-Charging Aqueous Zn//COF Battery with UltraHigh Self-Charging Efficiency and Rate

Self-charging zinc batteries that combine energy harvesting technology with batteries are candidates for reliable self-charging power systems. However, the lack of rational materials design results in unsatisfactory self-charging performance. Here, a covalent organic framework containing pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone groups (COF-PTO) is reported as a cathode material for aqueous self-charging zinc batteries. The ordered channel structure of the COF-PTO provides excellent capacity retention of 98% after 18 000 cycles at 10 A g-1 and ultra-fast ion transfer. To visually assess the self-charging performance, two parameters, namely self-charging efficiency (self-charging discharge capacity/galvanostatic discharge capacity, η) and average self-charging rate (total discharge capacity after cyclic self-charging/total cyclic self-charging time, ν), are proposed for performance evaluation. COF-PTO achieves an impressive η of 96.9% and an ν of 30 mAh g-1 self-charge capacity per hour in 100 self-charging cycles, surpassing the previous reports. Mechanism studies reveal the co-insertion of Zn2+ and H+ double ions in COF-PTO of self-charging zinc batteries. In addition, the C═N and C═O (on the benzene) in COF-PTO are ortho structures to each other, which can easily form metal heterocycles with Zn ions, thereby driving the forward progress of the self-charging reaction and enhancing the self-charging performance.

Manipulation of protein corona for nanomedicines

Nanomedicines have significantly advanced the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for various diseases, while they still encounter numerous challenges. Upon entry into the human body, nanomedicines interact with biomolecules to form a layer of proteins, which is defined as the protein corona that influences the biological properties of nanomedicines. Traditional approaches have primarily focused on designing stealthy nanomedicines to evade biomolecule adsorption; however, due to the intricacies of the biological environment within body, this method cannot completely prevent biomolecule adsorption. As research on the protein corona progresses, manipulating the protein corona to modulate the in vivo behaviors of nanomedicines has become a research focus. In this review, modern strategies focused on influencing the biological efficacy of nanomedicines in vivo by manipulating protein corona, along with their wide-ranging applications across diverse diseases are critically summarized, highlighted and discussed. Finally, future directions for this important yet challenging research area are also briefly discussed. Linker Mediated Electronic-State Manipulation of Conjugated Organic Polymers Enabling Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Conjugated polymers with tailorable composition and microarchitecture are propitious for modulating catalytic properties and deciphering inherent structure-performance relationships. Herein, we report a facile linker engineering strategy to manipulate the electronic states of metallophthalocyanine conjugated polymers and uncover the vital role of organic linkers in facilitating electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Specifically, a set of cobalt phthalocyanine conjugated polymers (CoPc-CPs) wrapped onto carbon nanotubes (denoted CNTs@CoPc-CPs) are judiciously crafted via in situ assembling square-planar cobalt tetraaminophthalocyanine (CoPc(NH2)4) with different linear aromatic dialdehyde-based organic linkers in the presence of CNTs. Intriguingly, upon varying the electronic characteristic of organic linkers from terephthalaldehyde (TA) to 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde (TDA) and then to thieno/thiophene-2,5-dicarboxaldehyde (bTDA), their corresponding CNTs@CoPc-CPs exhibit gradually improved electrocatalytic ORR performance. More importantly, theoretical calculations reveal that the charge transfer from CoPc units to electron-withdrawing linkers (i.e., TDA and bTDA) drives the delocalization of Co d-orbital electrons, thereby downshifting the Co d-band energy level. Accordingly, the active Co centers with more positive valence state exhibit optimized binding energy toward ORR-relevant intermediates and thus a balanced adsorption/desorption pathway that endows significant enhancement in electrocatalytic ORR. This work demonstrates a molecular-level engineering route for rationally designing efficient polymer catalysts and gaining insightful understanding of electrocatalytic mechanisms.

Co/Ce-MOF-Derived Oxygen Electrode Bifunctional Catalyst for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries

Improving the practicality of rechargeable zinc-air batteries relies heavily on the development of oxygen electrode catalysts that are low-cost, durable, and highly efficient in performing dual functions. In the present study, a catalyst with atomic Ce and Co distribution on a nitrogen-doped carbon substrate was prepared by doping the rare earth elements Ce and Co into a metal-organic framework precursor. Rare earth element Ce, known for its unique structure and excellent oxygen affinity, was utilized to regulate the catalytic activity. The catalyst prepared in this study demonstrated an exceptional electrocatalytic performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm-2, the catalyst exhibited an overpotential of 340 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which was lower than that of commercial IrO2 (370 mV), while achieving a half-wave potential of 0.79 V for the process of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), exhibiting a similar level of effectiveness as commercially accessible Pt/C catalysts (0.8 V). The catalyst's porous structure, interconnected three-dimensional carbon network, and large specific surface area are the factors contributing to the significant improvement in catalytic performance. Furthermore, in comparison to commercial Pt/C+IrO2, the catalyst exhibited good cycling stability and high efficiency in rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Bimetallic iron complex constructed clusters and single atoms neighboring structure to enhance oxygen reduction reaction performance

Electrocatalysts are useful in lowering the energy barrier in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, a catalyst with neighboring Fe single-atom and cluster is created by adsorbing a bimetallic Fe complex onto N-doped carbon and then pyrolyzing it. The resulting catalyst has good performance and a half-wave potential of 0.89 V. When used in Zn-air batteries, the voltage drops by only 8.13 % after 145 h of cycling. Theoretical studies show that electrons transfer from neighboring clusters to single atoms and the catalyst has a lower d-band center. These reduce intermediate desorption energy, hence improving ORR performance. This work demonstrates the capacity to adjust the catalytic properties through the interaction of diverse metal structures, which helps to design more efficient catalysts.

Electron Spin Broken-Symmetry of Fe-Co Diatomic Pairs to Promote Kinetics of Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis for Zinc-Air Batteries

Designing bifunctional catalysts to reduce the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) reaction barriers while accelerating the reaction kinetics is perceived to be a promising strategy to improve the performance of Zinc-air batteries. Unsymmetric configuration in single-atom catalysts has attracted attention due to its unique advantages in regulating electron orbitals. In this work, a seesaw effect in unsymmetric Fe-Co bimetallic monoatomic configurations is proposed, which can effectively improve the OER/ORR bifunctional activity of the catalyst. Compared with the symmetrical model of Fe-Co, a strong charge polarization between Co and Fe atoms in the unsymmetric model is detected, in whom the spin-down electrons around Co atoms are much higher than those spin-up electrons. The seesaw effect occurred between Co atoms and Fe atoms, resulting in a negative shift of the d-band center, which means that the adsorption of oxygen intermediates is weakened and more conducive to their dissociation. The optimized reaction kinetics of the catalyst leads to excellent performance in ZABs, with a peak power density of 215 mW cm-2 and stable cycling for >1300 h and >4000 cycles. Flexible Zinc-air batteries have also gained excellent performance to demonstrate their potential in the field of flexible wearables.

Integration of a Bismuth-Based Tris-Mononuclear Complex with 2D Functional Materials for Highly Efficient and Durable Aqueous Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The eminence of transitioning from traditional fossil fuel-based energy resources to renewable and sustainable energy sources is most evidently crucial. The potential of hydrogen as an alternative energy source has specifically focuses the electrocatalytic water splitting (EWS) as a promising technique for generating hydrogen. Development of efficient electrocatalysts to facilitate the EWS process while rationalizing the limitations of noble metal catalysts like platinum has become one of the daunting tasks. Consequently, porous functional materials such as metal complexes (MCs) and graphene oxide (GO) can act as potential catalysts for EWS. Therefore, a composite of GO and a mononuclear bismuth metal complex is synthesized through in situ facile synthesis, which is further utilized as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Several potential electrocatalytic MC@GO composite (BMGO-3,5,7) materials were prepared with compositional variation of GO (3, 5, and 7 wt %). The experimental results demonstrate that the BMGO5 composite exhibits excellent HER activity with a low overpotential value of 105 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 44 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH solution. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation on the potentiality of the BMC-GO composite for hydrogen evolution from river water splitting was performed in order to address the issue of freshwater depletion. Inclusion of a mononuclear MC for facile synthesis of functional GO-based efficient electrocatalyst material is very scanty in the literature. This unique approach could assist future research endeavors toward designing efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable renewable energy generation. This is one of the first of its kind, where mononuclear MCs were utilized to develop GO-based functional composite materials for efficient electrocatalysis toward sustainable renewable energy generation.

Tailoring Oxygen Reduction Reaction Kinetics of Fe-N-C Catalyst via Spin Manipulation for Efficient Zinc-Air Batteries

The interaction between oxygen species and metal sites of various orbitals exhibits intimate correlation with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Herein, a new approach for boosting the inherent ORR activity of atomically dispersed Fe-N-C matrix is represented by implanting Fe atomic clusters nearby. The as-prepared catalyst delivers excellent ORR activity with half-wave potentials of 0.78 and 0.90 V in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. The decent ORR activity can also be validated from the high-performance rechargeable Zn-air battery. The experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the electron spin-state of monodispersed Fe active sites is transferred from the low spin (LS, t2g 6 eg 0) to the medium spin (MS, t2g 5 eg 1) due to the involvement of Fe atomic clusters, leading to the spin electron filling in σ∗ orbit, by which it favors OH- desorption and in turn boosts the reaction kinetics of the rate-determining step. This work paves a solid way for rational design of high-performance Fe-based single atom catalysts through spin manipulation.

Fe-Co Co-Doped 1D@2D Carbon-Based Composite as an Efficient Catalyst for Zn-Air Batteries

A Fe-Co dual-metal co-doped N containing the carbon composite (FeCo-HNC) was prepared by adjusting the ratio of iron to cobalt as well as the pyrolysis temperature with the assistance of functionalized silica template. Fe1Co-HNC, which was formed with 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D carbon nanosheets including a rich mesoporous structure, exhibited outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities. The ORR half-wave potential is 0.86 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), and the OER overpotential is 0.76 V at 10 mA cm-2 with the Fe1Co-HNC catalyst. It also displayed superior performance in zinc-air batteries. This method provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of efficient transition metal-based carbon catalysts.

Ordered mesoporous carbon with binary CoFe atomic species for highly efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

The exploration of powerful, efficient and precious metal-free electrocatalysts for facilitating the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a crucial endeavor in the development and application of energy conversion and storage devices. Herein, we have rationally designed and synthesized bimetallic CoFe species consisting of CoFe nanoparticles and atomically dispersed dual atoms anchored on an ordered mesoporous carbon matrix (CoFe/NC) as highly efficient ORR electrocatalysts. The pyrolyzation temperature for CoFe/NC plays a vital role in regulating the morphology and composition of both the carbon matrix and CoFe species. The optimized CoFe/NC-750 exhibits a favorable ORR performance in 0.1 M KOH with a high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.87 V vs. RHE, excellent tolerance to methanol and remarkable durability (no obvious decrease in E1/2 value after 3000 cycles), all of which are superior to the performance of commercial Pt/C. Experimental measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the improved ORR performance of CoFe/NC-750 is mainly attributed to the electronic structure of atomically dispersed Fe active sites modulated by the surrounding CoFe alloys and Co single atoms, which accelerates the dissociation and reduction of intermediate OH* species and promotes the ORR process.

Single-Atom Mn Catalysts via Integration with Mn Sub Nano-Clusters Synergistically Enhance Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Integrating single atoms and clusters into one system represents a novel strategy for achieving the desired catalytic performance. In comparison to single-atom catalysts, catalysts combining single atoms and clusters harness the advantages of both, thus displaying greater potential. Nevertheless, constructing single-atom-cluster systems remains challenging, and the fundamental mechanism for enhancing catalytic activity remains elusive. In this study, a directly confined preparation of a 3D hollow sea urchin-like carbon structure (MnSA/MnAC-SSCNR) is developed. Mn single atoms synergistically interact with Mn clusters, optimizing and reducing energy barriers in the reaction pathway, thus enhancing reaction kinetics. Consequently, in contrast to Mn single-atom catalysts (MnSA-SSCNR), MnSA/MnAC-SSCNR exhibits significantly improved oxygen reduction activity, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.90 V in 0.1 m KOH, surpassing that of MnSA-SSCNR and Pt/C. This work demonstrates a strategy of remote synergy between heterogeneous single atoms and clusters, which not only contributes to electrocatalytic reactions but also holds potential for reactions involving more complex products.

The Challenges and Opportunities for TiO2 Nanostructures in Gas Sensing

Chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal oxides have been widely applied in industrial monitoring, medical diagnosis, environmental pollutant detection, and food safety. To further enhance the gas sensing performance, researchers have worked to modify the structure and function of the material so that it can adapt to different gas types and environmental conditions. Among the numerous gas-sensitive materials, n-type TiO2 semiconductors are a focus of attention for their high stability, excellent biosafety, controllable carrier concentration, and low manufacturing cost. This Perspective first introduces the sensing mechanism of TiO2 nanostructures and composite TiO2-based nanomaterials and then analyzes the relationship between their gas-sensitive properties and their structure and composition, focusing also on technical issues such as doping, heterojunctions, and functional applications. The applications and challenges of TiO2-based nanostructured gas sensors in food safety, medical diagnosis, environmental detection, and other fields are also summarized in detail. Finally, in the context of their practical application challenges, future development technologies and new sensing concepts are explored, providing new ideas and directions for the development of multifunctional intelligent gas sensors in various application fields.

Regulating the frontier orbital of iron phthalocyanine with nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets for improving oxygen reduction activity

Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) has attracted widespread attention for its tunable electronic structure. However, the Fe-N sites suffer from undesirable oxygen reduction activity due to the symmetric geometries. A suitable substrate was thus needed to induce electron redistribution around Fe-N to improve the activity. Herein, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (N-CNSs) were prepared by a simple high temperature pyrolysis. Then iron phthalocyanine was loaded on the ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (FePc@N-CNSs) by a low-cost and simple solution method. This composite catalyst shows an excellent ORR activity with a half potential of 0.88 V, an onset potential of 0.99 V and durability superior to commercial Pt/C. When used as an air cathode catalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries, FePc@N-CNS modified batteries outperform Pt/C + RuO2 modified batteries with higher power density and superior constant current charge-discharge cycling stability of 37 hours. The regulated electronic structure of FePc by the N-CNS substrate was revealed further by DFT calculations, which explained the enhanced adsorption of the active center to the intermediates and the increased ORR performance.

Self-Catalyzed Growth of Co4N and N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes toward Bifunctional Cathode for Highly Safe and Flexible Li-Air Batteries

The practical application of high-energy density lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is severely impeded by the notorious cycling stability and safety, which mainly comes from slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at cathodes, causing inferior redox overpotentials and reactive lithium metal in flammable liquid electrolyte. Herein, a bifunctional electrode, a safe gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), and a robust lithium anode are proposed to alleviate above problems. The bifunctional electrode is composed of N-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) and Co4N by in situ chemical vapor deposition self-catalyzed growth on carbon cloth (N-CNTs@Co4N@CC). The self-supporting, binder-free N-CNTs@Co4N@CC electrode has a strong and stable three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive structure, which provides interconnectivity between the active sites and the electrode to promote the transfer of electrons. Furthermore, the N-CNT-intertwined Co4N ensures efficient catalytic activity. Hence, the electrode demonstrates improved electrochemical properties even under a large current density (2000 mA g-1) and long cycling operation (250 cycles). Moreover, a highly safe and flexible rechargeable cell using the 3D N-CNTs@Co4N@CC electrode, GPE, and robust lithium anode design has been explored. The open circuit voltage is stable at ∼3.0 V even after 9800 cycles, which proves the mechanical durability of the integrated GPE cell. The stable cable-type Li-air battery was demonstrated to stably drive the light-emitting diodes (LEDs), highlighting the reliability for practical use.

Single-Atomic Co-N4 Sites with CrCo Nanoparticles for Metal-Air Battery-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

Designing highly active and robust earth abundant trifunctional electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion applications remain an enormous challenge. Herein, we report a trifunctional electrocatalyst (CrCo/CoN4@CNT-5), synthesized at low calcination temperature (550 °C), which consists of Co-N4 single atom and CrCo alloy nanoparticles and exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and oxygen reduction reaction. The catalyst is able to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline electrolytic cell at a very low cell voltage of ∼1.60 V. When the catalyst is equipped in a liquid rechargeable Zn-air battery, it endowed a high open-circuit voltage with excellent cycling durability and outperformed the commercial Pt/C+IrO2 catalytic system. Furthermore, the Zn-air battery powered self-driven water splitting system is displayed using CrCo/CoN4@CNT-5 as sole trifunctional catalyst, delivering a high H2 evolution rate of 168 μmol h-1. Theoretical calculations reveal synergistic interaction between Co-N4 active sites and CrCo nanoparticles, favoring the Gibbs free energy for H2 evolution. The presence of Cr not only enhances the H2O adsorption and dissociation but also tunes the electronic property of CrCo nanoparticles to provide optimized hydrogen binding capacity to Co-N4 sites, thus giving rise to accelerated H2 evolution kinetics. This work highlights the importance of the presence of small quantity of Cr in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity as well as robustness of single-atom catalyst and suggests the design of the multifunctional robust electrocatalysts for long-term H2 evolution application.

A 700 nm LED Light Activated Ru(II) Complex Destroys Tumor Cytoskeleton via Photosensitization and Photocatalysis

Photoactivable chemotherapy (PACT) using metallic complexes provides spatiotemporal selectivity over drug activation for targeted anticancer therapy. However, the poor absorption in near-infrared (NIR) light region of most metallic complexes renders tissue penetration challenging. Herein, an NIR light triggered dinuclear photoactivable Ru(II) complex (Ru2) is presented and the antitumor mechanism is comprehensively investigated. The introduction of a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) linker greatly enhances the intramolecular charge transition, resulting in a high molar extinction coefficient in the NIR region with an extended triplet excited state lifetime. Most importantly, when activated by 700 nm NIR light, Ru2 exhibits unique slow photodissociation kinetics that facilitates synergistic photosensitization and photocatalytic activity to destroy diverse intracellular biomolecules. In vitro and in vivo experiments show that when activated by 700 nm NIR light, Ru2 exhibits nanomolar photocytotoxicity toward 4T1 cancer cells via the induction of calcium overload and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. These findings provide a robust foundation for the development of NIR-activated Ru(II) PACT complexes for phototherapeutic application.

Surface atom knockout for the active site exposure of alloy catalyst

The fine regulation of catalysts by the atomic-level removal of inactive atoms can promote the active site exposure for performance enhancement, whereas suffering from the difficulty in controllably removing atoms using current micro/nano-scale material fabrication technologies. Here, we developed a surface atom knockout method to promote the active site exposure in an alloy catalyst. Taking Cu3Pd alloy as an example, it refers to assemble a battery using Cu3Pd and Zn as cathode and anode, the charge process of which proceeds at about 1.1 V, equal to the theoretical potential difference between Cu2+/Cu and Zn2+/Zn, suggesting the electricity-driven dissolution of Cu atoms. The precise knockout of Cu atoms is confirmed by the linear relationship between the amount of the removed Cu atoms and the battery cumulative specific capacity, which is attributed to the inherent atom-electron-capacity correspondence. We observed the surface atom knockout process at different stages and studied the evolution of the chemical environment. The alloy catalyst achieves a higher current density for oxygen reduction reaction compared to the original alloy and Pt/C. This work provides an atomic fabrication method for material synthesis and regulation toward the wide applications in catalysis, energy, and others.

Collective Effect in a Multicomponent Ensemble Combining Single Atoms and Nanoparticles for Efficient and Durable Oxygen Reduction

Metal single-atom catalysts represent one of the most promising non-noble metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, they still suffer from insufficient activity and, particularly, durability for practical applications. Leveraging density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning (ML), we unravel an unexpected collective effect between FeN4OH sites, CeN4OH motifs, Fe nanoparticles (NPs), and Fe-CeO2 NPs. The collective effect comprises differently-weighted electronic and geometric interactions, whitch results in significantly enhanced ORR activity for FeN4OH active sites with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.948 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) in alkaline, relative to a commercial Pt/C (E1/2, 0.851 VRHE). Meanwhile, this collective effect endows the shortened Fe-N bonds and the remarkable durability with negligible activity loss after 50,000 potential cycles. The ML was used to understand the intricate geometric and electronic interactions in collective effect and reveal the intrinsic descriptors to account for the enhanced ORR performance. The universality of collective effect was demonstrated effective for the Co, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Mn-based multicomponent ensembles. These results confirm the importance of collective effect to simultaneously improve catalytic activity and durability.

One-step sintering construction of electromagnetic synergistic Co7Fe3/Co@CBC nanocomposites for enhanced microwave absorption properties

Based on the synergistic modulation of electromagnetic parameters and microstructure design, multidimensional porous magnetic carbon-based nanocomposites have become ideal materials with efficient absorption properties. What's more, a carbon-magnetic alloy composite is a commonly used and efficient microwave absorber. In this paper, Co7Fe3/Co@CBC (CFCC) nanocomposites with strong magnetism, a three-phase composition, and a three-dimensional porous structure were synthesized by reducing Fe2+ and Co2+ using chestnut-shell biomass carbon (CBC). Biomass carbon with a higher specific surface area provides numerous active sites for Co7Fe3 nanosheets and Co nanospheres to form three-dimensional ping-pong chrysanthemum-like nanocomposites, which generate rich heterogeneous interfaces and conductive network structures. By adjusting the amount of added biomass, the electromagnetic parameters can be effectively regulated to achieve efficient microwave absorption properties. When the amount of biomass added varies within the range of 1.0 to 2.5 g, all samples exhibit a favorable effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of over 5.88 GHz. In particular, the CFCC-2.0 composite exhibits optimal microwave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of -59.25 dB and an EAB of 6.34 GHz at a thickness of 2.8 mm. The simulation and modeling analysis results of radar cross section (RCS) further confirm the exceptional attenuation capability of composite materials at multiple incident angles. The exceptional microwave absorption properties and stability of EAB for the Co7Fe3/Co@CBC nanocomposite make it a promising candidate in the field of absorbing materials. This work also provides some feasible ideas for designing stable broadband wave-absorbing materials.

Hygroscopic Solutes Enable Non-van der Waals Electrolytes for Fire-Tolerant Dual-Air Batteries

Thermal safety issues of batteries have hindered their large-scale applications. Nonflammable electrolytes improved safety but solvent evaporation above 100 °C limited thermal tolerance, lacking reliability. Herein, fire-tolerant metal-air batteries were realized by introducing solute-in-air electrolytes whose hygroscopic solutes could spontaneously reabsorb the evaporated water solvent. Using Zn/CaCl2 -in-air/carbon batteries as a proof-of-concept, they failed upon burning at 631.8 °C but self-recovered then by reabsorbing water from the air at room temperature. Different from conventional aqueous electrolytes whose irreversible thermal transformation is determined by the boiling points of solvents, solute-in-air electrolytes make this transformation determined by the much higher decomposition temperature of solutes. It was found that stronger intramolecular bonds instead of intermolecular (van der Waals) interactions were strongly correlated to ultra-high tolerance temperatures of our solute-in-air electrolytes, inspiring a concept of non-van der Waals electrolytes. Our study would improve the understanding of the thermal properties of electrolytes, guide the design of solute-in-air electrolytes, and enhance battery safety.

Fe, N, S co-doped carbon network derived from acetate-modified Fe-ZIF-8 for oxygen reduction reaction

In this work, potassium acetate (KAc) was added during the synthesis of a Zn-Fe based metal-organic framework (Fe-ZIF-8) to increase the fixed amount of Fe while simultaneously enhancing the number of pores. Electrospinning was utilized to embed KAc-modified Fe-ZIF-8 (Fe-ZIF-8-Ac) into the polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mesh, to obtain a network composite (Fe@NC-Ac) with hierarchical porous structure. Fe@NC-Ac was co-pyrolyzed with thiourea, resulting in Fe, N, S co-doped carbon electrocatalyst. The electrochemical tests indicated that the prepared catalyst displayed relatively remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity, with an onset potential (Eonset) of 1.08 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) and a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.94 V, both higher than those of the commercial Pt/C (Eonset = 0.95 V and E1/2 = 0.84 V), respectively. Assembled into Zn-air batteries, the optimized catalyst exhibited higher open circuit voltage (1.698 V) and peak power density (90 mW cm-2) than those of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (1.402 V and 80 mW cm-2), respectively. This work provided a straightforward manufacturing strategy for the design of hierarchical porous carbon-based ORR catalysts with desirable performance.

The Contact Interface Electronic Coupling of Cobalt and Zirconia Enables Stable and Highly Efficient 4e- Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysis

Cobalt (Co) is an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst but suffers from issues of easy deactivation and instability. Here, it shows that ZrO2 can stabilize Co through interface electron coupling and enables highly efficient 4e- ORR catalysis. Porous carbon nanofibers loaded with dispersed Co-nanodots (≈10 nm, 9.63 wt%) and ZrO2 nanoparticles are synthesized as the catalyst. The electron transfer from the metallic Co to ZrO2 causes interface-oriented electron enrichment that promotes the activation and conversion of O2, improving the efficiency of 4e- transfer. Moreover, the simulation results show that ZrO2 acts like an electron reservoir to store electrons from Co and slowly release them to the interface, solving the easy deactivation problem of Co. The catalyst exhibits a high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.84 V, which only decreases by 3.6 mV after 10 000 cycles, showing great stability. Particularly, the enhanced spin polarization of Co in a magnetic field reinforces the interface electron coupling that increases the E1/2 to 0.864 V and decreases the energy barrier of ORR from 0.81 to 0.63 eV, confirming that the proposed strategy is effective for constructing efficient and stable ORR catalysts.

One-Step Pyrolysis Construction of Bimetallic Atom-Cluster Sites for Boosting Bifunctional Catalytic Activity in Zn-Air Batteries

Due to their unique advantages, single atoms and clusters of transition metals are expected to achieve a breakthrough in catalytic activity, but large-scale production of active materials remains a challenge. In this work, a simple solvent-free one-step annealing method is developed and applied to construct diatomic and cluster active sites in activated carbon by utilizing the strong anchoring ability of phenanthroline to metal ions, which can be scaled for mass productions. Benefiting from the synergy between the different metals, the obtained sub-nano-bimetallic atom-cluster catalysts (FeNiAC -NC) exhibit high oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) activity (E1/2 = 0.936 V vs. RHE) and a small ORR/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) potential gap of only 0.594 V. An in-house pouch Zn-air battery is assembled using an FeNiAC -NC catalyst, which demonstrates a stability of 1000 h, outperforming previous reports. The existence of clusters and their effects on catalytic activity is analyzed by density functional theory calculations to reveal the chemistry of nano-bimetallic atom-cluster catalysts.

Current Status and Perspectives of Dual-Atom Catalysts Towards Sustainable Energy Utilization

The exploration of sustainable energy utilization requires the implementation of advanced electrochemical devices for efficient energy conversion and storage, which are enabled by the usage of cost-effective, high-performance electrocatalysts. Currently, heterogeneous atomically dispersed catalysts are considered as potential candidates for a wide range of applications. Compared to conventional catalysts, atomically dispersed metal atoms in carbon-based catalysts have more unsaturated coordination sites, quantum size effect, and strong metal-support interactions, resulting in exceptional catalytic activity. Of these, dual-atomic catalysts (DACs) have attracted extensive attention due to the additional synergistic effect between two adjacent metal atoms. DACs have the advantages of full active site exposure, high selectivity, theoretical 100% atom utilization, and the ability to break the scaling relationship of adsorption free energy on active sites. In this review, we summarize recent research advancement of DACs, which includes (1) the comprehensive understanding of the synergy between atomic pairs; (2) the synthesis of DACs; (3) characterization methods, especially aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron spectroscopy; and (4) electrochemical energy-related applications. The last part focuses on great potential for the electrochemical catalysis of energy-related small molecules, such as oxygen reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and N2 reduction reaction. The future research challenges and opportunities are also raised in prospective section.

Primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma with EWSR1::CREB1 fusion: a literature review

PURPOSE

This review primarily aims to review the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, imaging, pathology, immunohistochemistry, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of Primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma (PPMS) with EWS RNA binding protein 1::cAMP response element binding protein 1 (EWSR1::CREB1) fusion. It provides reference for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

METHODS

Retrospectively collected the literature about PPMS with EWSR1::CREB1 fusion, its clinical, radiology, histology, molecular characteristics and current treatment strategies were collated and analyzed. This review provides a detailed differential diagnosis of the disease.

RESULTS

PPMS is an exceptionally rare, low-grade malignant tumor of the lung. This tumor commonly infiltrates lung tissue and develops within bronchial passages. It is identified by a genetic rearrangement involving the EWSR1 gene and a distinct chromosomal translocation t(2; 22)(q33; q12). Variants include EWSR1::CREB1 fusion and EWS RNA binding protein 1::activating transcription factors (EWSR1::ATF1) fusion. PPMS with EWSR1::CREB1 fusion is more prevalent among middle-aged individuals and affects both sexes almost equally. Clinical symptoms are relatively non-specific, primarily including cough, hemoptysis, and weight loss. Most patients undergo surgery and experience a favorable prognosis. Further research is required to validate the effectiveness of alternative treatments for PPMS with EWSR1::CREB1 fusion.

CONCLUSION

EWSR1 rearrangement and EWSR1::CREB1 fusion are crucial genetic features of PPMS and serve as important diagnostic markers. Immunohistochemically, PPMS tests positive for EMA. In terms of treatment, surgery has been the primary approach in recent years. Therefore, the efficacy of other treatments still requires further investigation.

Single-atom tailored atomically-precise nanoclusters for enhanced electrochemical reduction of CO2-to-CO activity

The development of facile tailoring approach to adjust the intrinsic activity and stability of atomically-precise metal nanoclusters catalysts is of great interest but remians challenging. Herein, the well-defined Au8 nanoclusters modified by single-atom sites are rationally synthesized via a co-eletropolymerization strategy, in which uniformly dispersed metal nanocluster and single-atom co-entrenched on the poly-carbazole matrix. Systematic characterization and theoretical modeling reveal that functionalizing single-atoms enable altering the electronic structures of Au8 clusters, which amplifies their electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO activity by ~18.07 fold compared to isolated Au8 metal clusters. The rearrangements of the electronic structure not only strengthen the adsorption of the key intermediates *COOH, but also establish a favorable reaction pathway for the CO2 reduction reaction. Moreover, this strategy fixing nanoclusters and single-atoms on cross-linked polymer networks efficiently deduce the performance deactivation caused by agglomeration during the catalytic process. This work contribute to explore the intrinsic activity and stability improvement of metal clusters.

Unraveling Valence Electron Number Dependent Excitonic Effects over M1-N3C1 Sites in Single-Atom Catalysts

Excitonic effects significantly influence the selective generation of reactive oxygen species and photothermal conversion efficiency in photocatalytic reactions; however, the intrinsic factors governing excitonic effects remain elusive. Herein, a series of single-atom catalysts with well-defined M1-N3C1 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) active sites are designed and synthesized to investigate the structure-activity relationship between photocatalytic materials and excitonic effects. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations unveil that excitonic effects are positively correlated with the number of valence electrons in single metal atoms. The single Mn atom with 5.93 valence electrons exhibits the weakest excitonic effects, which dominate superoxide radical (O2•-) generation through charge transfer and enhance photothermal conversion efficiency. Conversely, the single Ni atom with 9.27 valence electrons exhibits the strongest excitonic effects, dominating singlet oxygen (1O2) generation via energy transfer while suppressing photothermal conversion efficiency. Based on the valence electron number dependent excitonic effects, a reaction environment with hyperthermia and abundant cytotoxic O2•- is designed, achieving efficient and stable water disinfection. This work reveals single metal atom dependent excitonic effects and presents an atomic-level methodology for catalytic application targeted reaction environment tailoring.

Boosting Electrocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis via Synergistic Effect of Iron-Based Single Atoms and Clusters

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NO3RR) is gaining attention for low carbon emissions and environmental protection. However, low ammonia production rate and poor selectivity have remained major challenges in this multi-proton coupling process. Herein, we report a facile strategy toward a novel Fe-based hybrid structure composed of Fe single atoms and Fe3C atomic clusters that demonstrates outstanding performance for synergistic electrocatalytic NO3RR. By operando synchrotron Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical computation, we clarify that Fe single atoms serve as the active site for NO3RR, while Fe3C clusters facilitate H2O dissociation to provide protons (*H) for continued hydrogenation reactions. As a result, the Fe-based electrocatalyst exhibits ammonia Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100%, with a corresponding production rate of 24768 μg h-1 cm-2 at -0.4 V vs RHE, exceeding most reported metal-based catalysts. This research provides valuable guidance toward multi-step reactions.

Non-noble metal single-atoms for oxygen electrocatalysis in rechargeable zinc-air batteries: recent developments and future perspectives

Ever-growing demands for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) call for the development of advanced electrocatalysts. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), particularly those for isolating non-noble metals (NBMs), are attracting great interest due to their merits of low cost, high atom utilization efficiency, structural tunability, and extraordinary activity. Rational design of advanced NBM SACs relies heavily on an in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms. To gain a better understanding of the reaction mechanisms of oxygen electrocatalysis in ZABs and guide the design and optimization of more efficient NBM SACs, we herein organize a comprehensive review by summarizing the fundamental concepts in the field of ZABs and the recent advances in the reported NBM SACs. Moreover, the selection of NBM elements and supports of SACs and some effective strategies for enhancing the electrochemical performance of ZABs are illustrated in detail. Finally, the challenges and future direction in this field of ZABs are also discussed.

The activation mechanism of peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate by modified hydrochar: Based on the multiple active sites formed by N and Fe

Modified hydrochar (NHC@Fe), with multiple functional groups and transition metal oxide-containing surface, was successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The differences in its catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation were studied in detail. Experimental and DFT studies showed that abundant active sites, namely, transition metals and functional groups on NHC@Fe provided multiple effective pathways for the activation of persulfate (PS). The NHC@Fe/PMS and NHC@Fe/PDS systems could degrade about 80% of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in 120 min and were found to be better than those modified by iron or nitrogen alone. This emphasized the advantage of N-Fe co-modification in persulfate activation. Although the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle accelerated the activation, the activation of PMS mainly relied on Fe3+, whereas that of PDS mainly relied on Fe2+. Moreover, Fe-N, pyrrolic N, pyridine N, C-O, and O-CO groups also played a key role in the activation process, but the dominant action sites were not the same. Multiple free radicals, such as SO4•-, •OH, O2•-, and 1O2 were generated in PMS and PDS activation systems. 1O2 induced non-free radical pathway was mainly involved in the degradation of TC in both activation systems, but the generation pathway of 1O2 was more direct and rapid in the PDS system. This study provides detailed DFT models of the active sites activated by PMS and PDS and discusses the activation pathways of PMS and PDS along with the similarities and differences in ROS reaction mechanisms.

Recent Progress on Durable Metal-N-C Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

It is essential for the widespread application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to investigate low-cost, extremely active, and long-lasting oxygen reduction catalysts. Initial performance of PGM-free metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has advanced significantly, particularly for Fe-N-C-based catalysts. However, the insufficient stability of M-N-C catalysts still impedes their use in practical fuel cells. In this review, we focus on the understanding of the structure-stability relationship of M-N-C ORR catalysts and summarize valuable guidance for the rational design of durable M-N-C catalysts. In the first section of this review, we discuss the inherent degrading mechanisms of M-N-C catalysts, such as carbon corrosion, demetallation, H2 O2 attack, etc. As we gain a thorough comprehension of these deterioration mechanisms, we shift our attention to the investigation of strategies that can mitigate catalyst deterioration and increase its stability. These strategies include enhancing the anti-oxidation of carbon, fortifying M-N bonds, and maximizing the effectiveness of free radical scavengers. This review offers a prospective view on the enhancement of the stability of non-noble metal catalysts.

Emerging Xene-Based Single-Atom Catalysts: Theory, Synthesis, and Catalytic Applications

In recent years, the emergence of novel 2D monoelemental materials (Xenes), e.g., graphdiyne, borophene, phosphorene, antimonene, bismuthene, and stanene, has exhibited unprecedented potentials for their versatile applications as well as addressing new discoveries in fundamental science. Owing to their unique physicochemical, optical, and electronic properties, emerging Xenes have been regarded as promising candidates in the community of single-atom catalysts (SACs) as single-atom active sites or support matrixes for significant improvement in intrinsic activity and selectivity. In order to comprehensively understand the relationships between the structure and property of Xene-based SACs, this review represents a comprehensive summary from theoretical predictions to experimental investigations. Firstly, theoretical calculations regarding both the anchoring of Xene-based single-atom active sites on versatile support matrixes and doping/substituting heteroatoms at Xene-based support matrixes are briefly summarized. Secondly, controlled synthesis and precise characterization are presented for Xene-based SACs. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for the development of Xene-based SACs are highlighted.

Precise Design and Modification Engineering of Single-Atom Catalytic Materials for Oxygen Reduction

Due to their unique electronic and structural properties, single-atom catalytic materials (SACMs) hold great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Coordinating environmental and engineering strategies is the key to improving the ORR performance of SACMs. This review summarizes the latest research progress and breakthroughs of SACMs in the field of ORR catalysis. First, the research progress on the catalytic mechanism of SACMs acting on ORR is reviewed, including the latest research results on the origin of SACMs activity and the analysis of pre-adsorption mechanism. The study of the pre-adsorption mechanism is an important breakthrough direction to explore the origin of the high activity of SACMs and the practical and theoretical understanding of the catalytic process. Precise coordination environment modification, including in-plane, axial, and adjacent site modifications, can enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of SACMs and promote the ORR process. Additionally, several engineering strategies are discussed, including multiple SACMs, high loading, and atomic site confinement. Multiple SACMs synergistically enhance catalytic activity and selectivity, while high loading can provide more active sites for catalytic reactions. Overall, this review provides important insights into the design of advanced catalysts for ORR.

Ternary Heteroatomic Doping Induced Microenvironment Engineering of Low Fe-N4-Loaded Carbon Nanofibers for Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Fabricating highly efficient and long-life redox bifunctional electrocatalysts is vital for oxygen-related renewable energy devices. To boost the bifunctional catalytic activity of Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts, it is imperative to fine-tune the coordination microenvironment of the Fe sites to optimize the adsorption/desorption energies of intermediates during oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) and simultaneously avoid the aggregation of atomically dispersed metal sites. Herein, a strategy is developed for fabricating a free-standing electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed Fe sites (≈0.89 wt.%) supported on N, F, and S ternary-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (FeN4 -NFS-CNF). Both experimental and theoretical findings suggest that the incorporation of ternary heteroatoms modifies the charge distribution of Fe active centers and enhances defect density, thereby optimizing the bifunctional catalytic activities. The efficient regulation isolated Fe centers come from the dual confinement of zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polymerized ionic liquid (PIL), while the precise formation of distinct hierarchical three-dimensional porous structure maximizes the exposure of low-doping Fe active sites and enriched heteroatoms. FeN4 -NFS-CNF achieves remarkable electrocatalytic activity with a high ORR half-wave potential (0.90 V) and a low OER overpotential (270 mV) in alkaline electrolyte, revealing the benefit of optimizing the microenvironment of low-doping iron single atoms in directing bifunctional catalytic activity.

Nanoscale Metal Particle Modified Single-Atom Catalyst: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis because of their well-defined active sites, maximum atomic utilization efficiency, and unique unsaturated coordinated structures. However, their effectiveness is limited to reactions requiring active sites containing multiple metal atoms. Furthermore, the loading amounts of single-atom sites must be restricted to prevent aggregation, which can adversely affect the catalytic performance despite the high activity of the individual atoms. The introduction of nanoscale metal particles (NMPs) into SACs (NMP-SACs) has proven to be an efficient approach for improving their catalytic performance. A comprehensive review is urgently needed to systematically introduce the synthesis, characterization, and application of NMP-SACs and the mechanisms behind their superior catalytic performance. This review first presents and classifies the different mechanisms through which NMPs enhance the performance of SACs. It then summarizes the currently reported synthetic strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques of NMP-SACs. Moreover, their application in electro/thermo/photocatalysis, and the reasons for their superior performance are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of NMP-SACs for the future design of advanced catalysts are addressed.

Spatial separation strategy to construct N/S co-doped carbon nanobox embedded with asymmetrically coupled Fe-Co pair-site for boosted reversible oxygen electrocatalysis

The fabrication of a remarkably efficient iron-metal-based pair-site, constrained within carbon support, presents a significant and intricate undertaking, primarily attributable to the propensity of proximate metallic entities to amalgamate into the alloy state. In response to this challenge, a spatial segregation approach was conceptualized, aiming to synthesize an N/S co-doped carbon nanobox hosting an asymmetrically coupled Fe-Co pair-site. This engineered nanostructure manifested remarkable electrocatalytic properties, notably featuring a superb half-wave potential of 0.903 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a commendable overpotential of 0.296 V at 10 mA/cm2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, a homemade Zn-air battery incorporating this nanohybrid catalyst demonstrated a discharge capacity of 737 mAh/g, a specific maximum power density of 239 mW/cm2 as well as notable durability. Work-function calculations suggested that the electronic interaction between Fe and Co phases, along with the synergetic catalysis of N/S co-doped carbon substrate, could facilitate charge redistribution at the interface, create abundant active sites, and optimize the adsorption-desorption energy of oxygen species on the active center, thus markedly reducing the ORR/OER catalytic reaction barriers. These findings highlight a new strategy for designing and synthesizing efficient bifunctional carbon-based catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices.

Atomically Dispersed Iron Regulating Electronic Structure of Iron Atom Clusters for Electrocatalytic H2 O2 Production and Biomass Upgrading

The integration of highly active single atoms (SAs) and atom clusters (ACs) into an electrocatalyst is critically important for high-efficiency two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) to hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Here we report a tandem impregnation-pyrolysis-etching strategy to fabricate the oxygen-coordinated Fe SAs and ACs anchored on bacterial cellulose-derived carbon (BCC) (FeSAs/ACs-BCC). As the electrocatalyst, FeSAs/ACs-BCC exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity and selectivity toward 2e- ORR, affording an onset potential of 0.78 V (vs. RHE) and a high H2 O2 selectivity of 96.5 % in 0.1 M KOH. In a flow cell reactor, the FeSAs/ACs-BCC also achieves high-efficiency H2 O2 production with a yield rate of 12.51±0.18 mol gcat -1  h-1 and a faradaic efficiency of 89.4 %±1.3 % at 150 mA cm-2 . Additionally, the feasibility of coupling the produced H2 O2 and electro-Fenton process for the valorization of ethylene glycol was explored in detail. The theoretical calculations uncover that the oxygen-coordinated Fe SAs effectively regulate the electronic structure of Fe ACs which are the 2e- ORR active sites, resulting in the optimal binding strength of *OOH intermediate for high-efficiency H2 O2 production.

S-Block Potassium Single-atom Electrocatalyst with K-N4 Configuration Derived from K+ /Polydopamine for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Currently, single-atom catalysts (SACs) research mainly focuses on transition metal atoms as active centers. Due to their delocalized s/p-bands, the s-block main group metal elements are typically regarded as catalytically inert. Herein, an s-block potassium SAC (K-N-C) with K-N4 configuration is reported for the first time, which exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability under alkaline conditions. Specifically, the half-wave potential (E1/2 ) is up to 0.908 V, and negligible changes in E1/2 are observed after 10,000 cycles. In addition, the K-N-C offers an exceptional power density of 158.1 mW cm-2 and remarkable durability up to 420 h in a Zn-air battery. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that K-N-C has bifunctional active K and C sites, can optimize the free energy of ORR reaction intermediates, and adjust the rate-determining steps. The crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) results showed that the s orbitals of K played a major role in the adsorption of intermediates, which was different from the d orbitals in transition metals. This work significantly guides the rational design and catalytic mechanism research of s-block SACs with high ORR activity.

Switching the Oxygen Evolution Mechanism on Atomically Dispersed Ru for Enhanced Acidic Reaction Kinetics

Designing stable single-atom electrocatalysts with lower energy barriers is urgent for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction. In particular, the atomic catalysts are highly dependent on the kinetically sluggish acid-base mechanism, limiting the reaction paths of intermediates. Herein, we successfully manipulate the steric localization of Ru single atoms at the Co3O4 surface to improve acidic oxygen evolution by precise control of the anchor sites. The delicate structure design can switch the reaction mechanism from the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) to the optimized adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). In particular, Ru atoms embedded into cation vacancies reveal an optimized mechanism that activates the proton donor-acceptor function (PDAM), demonstrating a new single-atom catalytic pathway to circumvent the classic scaling relationship. Steric interactions with intermediates at the anchored Ru-O-Co interface played a primary role in optimizing the intermediates' conformation and reducing the energy barrier. As a comparison, Ru atoms confined to the surface sites exhibit a lattice oxygen mechanism for the oxygen evolution process. As a result, the delicate atom control of the spatial position presents a 100-fold increase in mass activity from 36.96 A gRu(ads)-1 to 4012.11 A gRu(anc)-1 at 1.50 V. These findings offer new insights into the precise control of single-atom catalytic behavior.

Probing the Activity Enhancement of Carbocatalyst with the Anchoring of Atomic Metal

Enhanced catalysis for organic transformation is essential for the synthesis of high-value compounds. Atomic metal species recently emerged as highly effective catalysts for organic reactions with high activity and metal utilization. However, developing efficient atomic catalysts is always an attractive and challenging topic in the modern chemical industry. In this work, we report the preparation and activity enhancement of nitrogen- and sulfur-codoped holey graphene (NSHG) with the anchoring of atomic metal Pd. When employed as the catalyst for nitroarenes reduction reactions, the resultant Pd/NSHG composite exhibits remarkably high catalytic activity due to the co-existence of dual-active components (i.e., catalytically active NSHG support and homogeneous dispersion of atomic metal Pd). In the catalytic 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction reaction, the efficiency (turnover frequency) is 3.99 × 10-2 mmol 4-NP/(mg cat.·min), which is better than that of metal-free nitrogen-doped holey graphene (NHG) (2.3 × 10-3 mmol 4-NP/(mg cat.·min)) and NSHG carbocatalyst (3.8 × 10-3 mmol 4-NP/(mg cat.·min)), the conventional Pd/C and other reported metal-based catalysts. This work provides a rational design strategy for the atomic metal catalysts loaded on active doped graphene support. The resultant Pd/NSHG dual-active component catalyst (DACC) is also anticipated to bring great application potentials for a broad range of organic fields, such as organic synthesis, environment treatment, energy storage and conversion.
