Sulfamide: A Promising Deep-Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Crystal Assembled from Polar Covalent [SO2 (NH2 )2 ] Tetrahedra

Enhanced UV Nonlinear Optical Properties in Layered Germanous Phosphites through Functional Group Sequential Construction

This study pioneers a novel strategy for synthesizing solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals through functional groups sequential construction, effectively addressing the inherent trade-offs among broad transmittance, enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG), and optimal birefringence. We have developed two innovative van der Waals layered germanous phosphites: GeHPO3, the first Ge(II)-based oxide NLO crystal which exhibits a black phosphorus-like structure, and K(GeHPO3)2Br, distinguished by its exceptional birefringence and graphene-like structure. Significantly, GeHPO3 exhibits a remarkable array of NLO properties, including the highest SHG coefficient recorded among all NLO crystals for phase-matching and generating 266 nm coherent light via quadruple frequency conversion. It delivers a potent SHG intensity, surpassing KH2PO4 (KDP) by 10.3 times at 1064 nm and β-BaB2O4 by 1.3 times at 532 nm, complemented by a distinct UV absorption edge at 211 nm and moderate birefringence of 0.062 at 546 nm. Comprehensive theoretical analysis links these exceptional characteristics to the unique NLO-active GeO3 4- units and the distinctive, highly ordered layered structures. Our findings deliver essential experimental insights into the development of Ge(II)-based optoelectronic materials and present a strategic blueprint for engineering structure-driven functional materials with customized properties.

(C4H6N3O)(HSO4): A Cytosinium Bisulfate with Large Birefringence and Moderate Second Harmonic Generation Effect Produced via Combining a Promising Planar Nonlinear Optical-Active Motif with a Tetrahedral Group

Investigating novel nonlinear optical (NLO) active units serves as a valuable method for broadening the research landscape of NLO materials. This study showcases the potential of the cytosinium cation (C4H6N3O)+ as a novel NLO-active motif through theoretical calculations. The title compound exhibited a wide band gap of 3.85 eV, along with a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 1.65 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and significant birefringence of 0.47. Its exceptional optical properties are primarily attributed to the synergy interaction between cations and anionic groups in the asymmetric unit.

KBa3M2F14Cl (M = Zr, Hf): novel short-wavelength mixed metal halides with the largest second-harmonic generation responses contributed by mixed functional moieties

The development of short-wavelength nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is indispensable and urgently required for further applications. Halides have been disregarded as potential NLO materials with deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edges due to their weak second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and poor birefringence. Here, two novel and isostructural halides, KBa3M2F14Cl (M = Zr (KBZFC), Hf (KBHFC)), possess structures that are formed by isolated MF7 monocapped triangular prisms and dissociative K+, Ba2+, and Cl- ions. Compared with reported metal halides that are transparent to the DUV region, KBZFC and KBHFC possess the strongest SHG responses (approximately 1, 0.9 × KH2PO4), which are contributed by the synergistic effect of MF7 (M = Zr, Hf) groups, Ba2+ cations, and Cl- ions. The zero-dimensional structures favour sufficient birefringences (0.12, 0.10 @ 1064 nm) for phase-matchable (PM) behaviours. The discovery of KBZFC and KBHFC showcases the potential of NLO mixed metal halides transparent to the DUV region.

[(C5H6N2)2H](Sb4F13): a polyfluoroantimonite with a strong second harmonic generation effect

It is of great difficulty to create a new antimonite with second-harmonic-generation (SHG) intensity larger than 6 times that of KDP. In this study, a polyfluoroantimonite strategy has been proposed to explore fluoroantimonites with large nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficients. Under the cooperation of chemical (highly asymmetric π-conjugated organic amine) and physical (viscous reaction medium ethylene glycol) methods, two novel polyfluoroantimonites, namely, (3PC)2(Sb4F14) and (3AP)2(Sb4F13), have been achieved. Interestingly, these two structures contain two new polyfluoroantimonite groups respectively, an isolated (Sb4F14)2- four-member polyhedral ring and an infinite [Sb4F13]∞- helical chain. More importantly, the polar (3AP)2(Sb4F13) displays a strong SHG intensity of 8.1 × KDP, a large birefringence of 0.258@546 nm and a high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) value of 149.7 MW cm-2. Theoretical calculations indicated that its strong SHG effect stems from the synergistic effect of the helical [Sb4F13]∞- polyfluoroantimonite chain and π-conjugated 3AP+ cation, with a contribution ratio of 48.93% and 50.77% respectively. This work provides a new approach for the design and synthesis of high-performance fluoroantimonites.

A Sharp Improvement of Sulfate's Birefringence Induced by the Synergistic Effect of Heteroleptic and Dimeric Strategies

As for tetrahedron-based ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals, it is so difficult to achieve a sufficient birefringence to satisfy the phase-matching condition. Thereover, it is necessary to greatly increase the polarizability anisotropy of tetrahedra. Meanwhile, the tetrahedra should be arranged as uniformly as possible. Based on these ideas, a new strategy that dimerizes the heteroleptic tetrahedra with heteroleptic atoms as bridges is proposed and implemented, resulting in a new compound, Na2S3O6, which crystallizes in a centrosymmetric monoclinic phase (phase-I) and a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic one (phase-II). In the phase-I, a large birefringence of 0.103 @ 546 nm comparable to those of many triangle-based crystals is confirmed experimentally, indicating the ability of [S3O6] group in improving the birefringence. Besides, the phase-II exhibits an improved birefringence of 0.056 @ 546 nm and a moderate second harmonic generation response of 1.4 × KH2PO4. In particular, the phase-II exhibits a typical phase-matching behavior under the irradiation of 532 nm laser. Moreover, the excellent optical properties of [S3O6] group are further verified by theoretical calculations. These results completely illustrate the validity of the design strategy. Therefore, this work lights a new route for exploring novel ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals.

Hydrogen bonding bolstered head-to-tail ligation of functional chromophores in a 0D SbF3·glycine adduct for a short-wave ultraviolet nonlinear optical material

The key properties of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials highly rely on the quality of functional chromophores (FCs) and their optimized interarrangement in the lattice. Despite the screening of various FCs, significant challenges persist in optimizing their arrangement within specific structures. Generally, FC alignment is achieved by designing negatively charged 2D layers or 3D frameworks, further regulated by templating cations. In this study, a novel 0D adduct NLO material, SbF3·glycine, is reported. Neutrally charged 0D [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs, comprising [SbF3] pyramids and zwitterionic glycine, are well-aligned in the structure. The alignment is facilitated by the hydrogen bonding, reinforcing a 'head-to-tail' ligation of [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs. Consequently, the title compound exhibits favorable NLO properties, including a large second-harmonic generation efficiency (3.6 × KDP) and suitable birefringence (cal. 0.057 @ 1064 nm). Additionally, its short absorption cut-off edge (231 nm) positions it as a promising short-wave ultraviolet NLO material. Importantly, the binary SbF3-amino acid system is expected to serve as a new resource for exploring ultraviolet NLO crystals, owing to the abundance of the amino acid family.

Two Acentric Zn-Based l-Tartrates with Moderate Second Harmonic Generation Responses and Large Birefringence

The discovery of novel organic-inorganic hybrid nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal materials holds great potential in advancing laser science and technology as they offer a wide range of benefits including easy synthesis, structural versatility, and high hyperpolarizability. Herein, the integration of l-tartaric acid (L-C4H6O6) and ZnSO4 gave rise to two acentric Zn-based organic-inorganic hybrid crystals, namely, Zn2(H2O)2(C4H4O6)2·3H2O (Zn-LT) and Zn2(H2O)(C4H4O6)(C4H6O6)(SO4)·4H2O (Zn-LTS). They both feature layered structures constructed by [ZnO6] octahedron, l-C4H6O6/l-C4H4O62-, water molecule, or [SO4] tetrahedron. Interestingly, they possess moderate second-order NLO effects of 0.28 × KH2PO4 (Zn-LT) and 0.57 × KH2PO4 (Zn-LTS), large birefringence of 0.075 (Zn-LT) and 0.069 (Zn-LTS), suggesting that the introduction of [SO4] groups with intrinsically weak polarizability and weak optical anisotropy induces the enhancement of the NLO effect while without reducing birefringence much. In addition, both of them display UV cutoff edges near 210 nm, indicating their potential as NLO crystals applied in the UV and solar-blind region.

Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4): A Giant Birefringent Sulfate Crystal Triggered by a Highly Selective Cation

Sulfate crystals are often criticized for their low birefringence. The small anisotropic SO4 group is becoming the biggest bottleneck hindering the application of sulfates in optical functional materials. In this study, we report a new method to significantly enhance the birefringence of sulfates. The title compound increases the birefringence recording of sulfates to 0.542@546 nm, which is significantly larger than that of the commercial birefringent crystal of TiO2 (0.306@546.1 nm). At the infrared wavelength, the birefringence of Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4) can be up to 0.400@1064 nm, which is also much larger than the infrared birefringent crystal of YVO4 (0.209@1064 nm). In addition, it also has a wide transparency range, high thermal stability, and excellent environmental stability, making it a potential birefringent material. Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4) features a novel two-dimensional layered structure composed of [Hg4(Te2O5)]2+ layers separated by isolated (SO4)2- tetrahedra. This compound was designed by introducing a highly selective cation in a tellurite sulfate system. The low valence low coordination cations connect with tellurite groups only, making the sulfate isolated in the structure. The steric repulsive action of the isolated SO4 tetrahedra may regulate the linear and lone pair groups arranged in a way that favors large birefringence. This method can be proven by theoretical calculations. PAWED studies showed that the large birefringence originated from the synergistic effect of (Hg2O2)2-, (Te2O5)2-, and (SO4)2- units, with a contribution ratio of 42.17, 37.92, and 19.88%, respectively. Our work breaks the limitation of low birefringence in sulfates and opens up new possibilities for their application as birefringent crystals.

Molecular Crystals Constructed by Polar Molecular Cages: A Promising System for Exploring High-performance Infrared Nonlinear Optical Crystals

Polar molecular crystals, with their densely stacked polar nonlinear optical (NLO) active units, are favored for their large second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and birefringence. However, their potential for practical applications as Infrared (IR) NLO materials has historically been underappreciated due to the weak inter-molecular interaction forces that may compromise their physicochemical properties. In this study, we propose molecular crystals with polar molecular cages as a treasure-house for the development of superior IR NLO materials and a representative system, binary chalcogenide molecular crystals, composed of [P4 Sn ] (n=3-9) polar molecular cages, is introduced. These crystals may not only achieve wide band gap, large SHG response, and birefringence in a single structure, but also exhibit favorable physicochemical properties. We subsequently obtained a polar molecular crystal, α-P4 S5 , which demonstrated exceptional IR optical properties, including a strong SHG response (1.1×AGS), wide band gap (3.02 eV), large birefringence (0.134@2050 nm), and a broad transmission range (0.41-14.7 μm). Moreover, it showed excellent water resistance and hardness. These findings highlight the potential of polar molecular crystals as a promising platform for the development of high-performance IR NLO materials.

Guanidinium Vanadate [C(NH2)3]3VO4·2H2O Revealing Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation and Wide Band Gaps

A new guanidinium-templated vanadate, [C(NH2)3]3VO4·2H2O, has been synthesized in a phase-pure form. It crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric polar space group, Cc, and the crystal structure is built upon a framework of guanidinium, vanadate tetrahedra, and water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds. Notably, optical measurements reveal that the material exhibits an approximately 9.6-fold enhancement in second-harmonic generation efficiency compared to its phosphate analogue. The enhancement can be attributed to the increased geometrical distortion of the VO4 tetrahedra. Furthermore, we found that the coordination number of the central vanadium atom significantly affects the optical band gaps. Among various coordination numbers, the 4-coordinate VO4 tetrahedra are found to be more favorable for widening the optical band gap of materials compared to the 5- and 6-coordinate vanadium polyhedra, as demonstrated by this work.

Anisotropic structure building unit involving diverse chemical bonds: a new opportunity for high-performance second-order NLO materials

We define the anisotropic structure building unit that encompasses diverse chemical bonds (ABUCB). The ABUCB is highly likely to cause anisotropy in both crystallographic structure and spatial electron distribution, ultimately resulting in enhanced macroscopic optical anisotropy. Accordingly, the (PO3F)2- or (SO3F)- tetrahedron involving the unique P-F or S-F bond serves as such an ABUCB. The distinct chemical bond effectively alters the microscopic nature of the structure building unit, such as polarizability anisotropy, hyperpolarizability, and geometry distortion; this consequently changes the macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical (2nd-NLO) properties of the materials. In this review, we summarize both typical and newly emerged compounds containing ABUCBs. These compounds encompass approximately 90 examples representing six distinct categories, including phosphates, borates, sulfates, silicates, chalcogenides and oxyhalides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the presence of ABUCBs in DUV/UV NLO compounds contributes to an increase in birefringence and retention of a large band gap, facilitating phase matching in high-energy short-wavelength spectral ranges. On the other hand, the inclusion of ABUCBs in IR NLO compounds offers a feasible method for increasing the band gap and consequently enhancing the larger laser-induced damage threshold. This review consolidates various trial-and-error explorations and presents a novel strategy for designing 2nd-NLO compounds, potentially offering an opportunity for the development of high-performance 2nd-NLO materials.

Two van der Waals Layered Antimony(III) Phosphites as UV Optical Materials

Herein, two new Sb3+-based phosphites, Sb2O2(HPO3) (I) and Sb2O(HPO3)2 (II), were successfully obtained by ingeniously combining Sb3+-based polyhedra containing stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP) and HPO3 polar groups. Both reported compounds exhibit unique 2D van der Waals layered structures, [Sb4O4(HPO3)2]∞ and [Sb2O(HPO3)2]∞, respectively, which favors compounds with large optical anisotropy. Interestingly, the different curvatures of the two layers resulted in the two title compounds showing significantly different birefringences (0.079@546 and 0.046@546 nm, respectively). Both compounds endow wide optical band gaps (4.32 and 4.54 eV, respectively), which indicates their potential as promising ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystals. The synthesis of the two title compounds enriched Sb3+-based phosphites in the UV region and provided guidance for the subsequent synthesis of superior optical materials.

New Functional Groups Design toward High Performance Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Materials

ConspectusThe invention of the laser is a pivotal milestone in the evolution of modern science and technology. Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, which possess the ability to convert frequencies, have found widespread applications in laser science, information transmission, industrial Internet, and other cutting-edge fields within materials and optics. As modern science and technology continue to advance at a rapid pace, existing ultraviolet (UV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) NLO crystals struggle to meet the ever-growing demands of various applications. Consequently, the development of novel UV and DUV NLO crystals has become an urgent necessity. For a UV NLO crystal to be considered outstanding in the UV/DUV range, it must exhibit three fundamental yet crucial properties: large second-order NLO coefficients, suitable birefringence, and short UV cutoff edge corresponding to a wide band gap. However, these key factors often conflict with one another, making it challenging to achieve a harmonious balance within a single crystal. It is widely believed that these mutually constrained optical properties are codetermined by microscopic NLO-active units and macroscopic structure features. Therefore, how to design high performance UV NLO-active groups to balance these three key properties is an essential scientifically question and serious challenge. In this Account, we present three strategies for designing high-performance UV NLO-active groups: (1) The "tetrahedron partial substitution" strategy by employing various substituents to replace one or more atoms in the traditional nonpolar tetrahedral groups, might achieve the aim of increasing the polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability of the newly formed polar tetrahedral functional groups, such as from SO4 to SO3NH2 or SO3CH3 groups. (2) The "structure-analogue" strategy to develop a range of organic functional groups exhibiting more strong polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability by using inorganic π-conjugated groups, such as BO3 and B3O6 groups, as templates. (3) The "two in one" strategy for integrating groups featuring planar triangle configurations and tetrahedrons to create NLO-active functional groups possessing large band gaps, strong hyperpolarizability, and moderate polarizability anisotropy. These three strategies successfully guide us to design and explore various kinds of organic-inorganic composite NLO crystal materials with excellent performances, like Ba(SO3CH3)2, M(SO3NH2)2 (M = Sr, Ba), C(NH2)3SO3F, KLi(HC3N3O3)·2H2O, KLi(C3H2O4)·H2O, and so on. Finally, we briefly conclude these strategies and propose some prospects for exploring new excellent UV/DUV NLO materials with practical applications. These findings could inspire novel thoughts for researchers designing new UV/DUV NLO materials and providing abundant materials used in UV/DUV regions.

(NH4 )2 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ) and K1.03 (NH4 )0.97 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ): Mixed-Valent Polyiodates with Unprecedented I5 O12 - Unit Exhibiting Strong Second-Harmonic Generation Responses and Giant Birefringence

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and birefringence are crucial properties for linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, while it is difficult to further optimize these two key properties by using a single traditional functional building block (FBB) in one compound. Herein, a novel IO4 5- unit is identified, which possesses a square-planar configuration and two stereochemically active lone-pairs (SCALPs). By combining IO4 5- and IO3 - units, the first examples of mixed-valent polyiodates featuring an unprecedented bowl-shaped I5 O12 - polymerized unit, namely (NH4 )2 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ) and K1.03 (NH4 )0.97 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ), are successfully synthesized. Excitingly, both crystals exhibit strong SHG responses (16 × KDP and 19.5 × KDP @1064 nm) as well as giant birefringence (∆nexp  = 0.431 and 0.405 @546 nm). Detailed structure-property analyses reveal that the parallel aligned planar IO4 5- units induce the properly aligned high-density SCALPs, leading to strong SHG response and giant birefringence for both materials. This work not only provides two new potential NLO and birefringent crystals, but also discovers a novel promising FBB (IO4 5- ) for developing high-performance linear and nonlinear optical materials.

Intense d-p Hybridization in Nb3 O15 Tripolymer Induced the Largest Second Harmonic Generation Response and Birefringence in Germanates

We herein report two asymmetric germanate crystals, KNbGe₃ O₉ and K₃ Nb₃ Ge₂ O₁₃ , with different structures and optical properties derived from divergent polymerized forms of GeO₄ and NbO₆ groups. Remarkably, K₃ Nb₃ Ge₂ O₁₃ achieved a rare combination of the strongest second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 17.5×KDP @ 1064 nm and the largest birefringence of 0.196 @ 546 nm in germanates. It features unique [Nb₃ O₁₂ ]_∞ tubular chains constructed by circular Nb₃ O₁₅ tripolymers. Theoretical calculations reveal that the d-p interactions in the Nb₃ O₁₅ group are responsible for outstanding optical properties. This work emphasizes the significance of the polymerizable functional units in obtaining high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals.

NaHSO4·H2O: A Promising Deep-Ultraviolet Nonlinear-Optical Bisulfate with Large Birefringence and a Second-Harmonic-Generation Effect

Searching on the functional building units with ultrawide band gaps, large hyperpolarizabilities, and strong anisotropies is the key to finding new deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials. In this study, the polar covalent tetrahedral unit [SO₃(OH)]^- is studied by theoretical calculation and its excellent DUV optical properties are revealed. Moreover, we thoroughly investigate the known bisulfates, finding a promising DUV NLO crystal, NaHSO₄·H₂O. It exhibits a large second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of 1.5 times that of KH₂PO₄ and a short cutoff edge (shorter than 190 nm). Meanwhile, it has the largest birefringence of 0.042 at 546 nm among the DUV NLO sulfates. Our study suggests that bisulfates should be fresh and ideal DUV NLO candidates.

SbHPO3F: 2D van der Waals Layered Phosphite Exhibiting Large Birefringence

A novel antimony(III)-based phosphite, SbHPO₃F, featuring a unique two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered structure, has been successfully designed and synthesized via the simultaneous employment of optically active moieties including SbO₃F seesaw and tetrahedral HPO₃ groups. Its optimized layered arrangement formed by the alternating connection of 4-membered rings (4-MRs) and 8-MRs endows the title compound with desirable optical properties including a large birefringence and short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge, implying that it is a potential UV birefringent material.

Deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals: concept development and materials discovery

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV, wavelength λ < 200 nm) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal is the core component of frequency conversion to generate DUV laser, which plays an important role in cutting-edge laser technology and fundamental science. Significant progress has been made in both experimental exploration and theoretical design in the field of DUV NLO crystals over the past three decades. In-depth insight into "structure-property correlations", in particular, allows for rigorous and precise identification of DUV NLO crystals. In this article, we reviewed the current experimental and theoretical research progress while elucidating the core concepts and stringent criteria of qualified DUV phase-matched second-harmonic generation crystals. We also discussed the development of the DUV NLO "structure-property correlations" from first principles and how it has sparked interest in related materials, as well as future directions for obtaining potential DUV NLO crystals.

Heteroanionic Melilite Oxysulfide: A Promising Infrared Nonlinear Optical Candidate with a Strong Second-Harmonic Generation Response, Sufficient Birefringence, and Wide Bandgap

The achievement of balanced performance with a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, proper birefringence, and wide band gap concurrently is a crucial but challenging task in infrared nonlinear optical (IR-NLO) crystals. Here, we theoretically confirmed that the heteroanionic oxysulfide tetrahedron would produce improved polarizability anisotropy and quadratic hyperpolarizability compared with the monoanionic oxide or sulfide tetrahedra. When this anion-mixing strategy was applied, melilite oxysulfide with the four representative members A2GeGa2OS6 (A = Ca, Sr) and Sr2MGe2OS6 (M = Zn, Cd) was successfully discovered as a promising IR-NLO material system. Remarkably, compared with the monoanionic melilite oxides, these compounds exhibited unbiased performances of proper birefringences (0.106-0.143), strong SHG responses (>10× melilite oxide Ba2CdGe2O7, 1.3-2.1× AgGaS2 (AGS) @1570 nm) with phase-matchable ability, wide band gaps (2.95-3.15 eV), and large laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs, 5.6-13.4× AGS). The high structure tolerance of melilite offers a great possibility to improve the SHG response via tuning the orbital composition and hybridization near band edges. This work provides an effective approach for the design of high-performance IR-NLO materials.
