Strong Nonlinearity Induced by Coaxial Alignment of Polar Chain and Dense [BO3 ] Units in CaZn2 (BO3 )2

K2MgMoP2O10 and K3Mg2MoP3O14: two new molybdophosphates exhibiting different optical anisotropies induced by variable dimensionality of the anion framework

By introducing the d0 metal cation Mo6+ into phosphates, two new molybdophosphates, K2MgMoP2O10 and K3Mg2MoP3O14, were synthesized by spontaneous crystallization, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. K2MgMoP2O10 shows a two-dimensional layer composed of the uncommon eight-membered ring [Mo2P2O16] formed by [MoO6] and [PO4], while K3Mg2MoP3O14 shows isolated [MoP3O14] clusters composed of [MoO5] and [PO4]. K2MgMoP2O10 and K3Mg2MoP3O14 have UV cut-off wavelengths of 277 and 271 nm, respectively, which are significantly shorter than those of most recently published molybdophosphates. To the best of our acknowledge, K2MgMoP2O10 exhibits the largest birefringence (a calculated value of 0.187 at 546 nm) among reported alkali metal or alkaline earth metal molybdophosphates, which provides a way to explore new birefringent materials. First-principles analysis of the electronic structure shows that the large birefringence of K2MgMoP2O10 mainly originates from the [MoO6] units.

Recent advances in rational structure design for nonlinear optical crystals: leveraging advantageous templates

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can expand the spectral range of laser outputs have attracted significant attention for their optoelectronic applications. The research progress from the discovery of new single crystal structures to the realization of final device applications involves many key steps and is very time consuming and challenging. Consequently, exploring efficient design strategies to shorten the research period and accelerate the rational design of novel NLO materials has become imperative to address the pressing demand for advanced materials. The recent shift in paradigm toward exploring new NLO crystals involves significant progress from extensive "trial and error" methodologies to strategic approaches. This review proposes the concept of rational structure design for nonlinear optical crystals leveraging advantageous templates. It further discusses their optical characteristics, promising applications as second-order NLO materials, and the relationship between their structure and performance, and highlights urgent issues that need to be addressed in the field of NLO crystals in the future. The review aims to provide ideas and driving impetus to encourage researchers to achieve new breakthroughs in the next generation of NLO materials.

A bifunctional primitive strategy induces enhancements of large second harmonic generation and wide UV transmittance in rare-earth borates containing [B5O10] groups

Strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge are two crucial yet often conflicting parameters that must be finely tuned in the exploration of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. In this study, two new rare earth borate NLO crystals, K7BaSc2B15O30 (KBSBO) and Rb21Sr3.8Sc5.2B45O90 (RSSBO), were rationally designed through a bifunctional primitive strategy to achieve an optimized balance between favorable SHG efficiency and UV transparency. As anticipated, both KBSBO and RSSBO exhibit a wide UV transparency window below 190 nm. Notably, these tailored crystals display strong SHG responses, with RSSBO achieving a remarkable enhancement in SHG efficiency (2 × KDP), surpassing that of most deep-UV rare earth borates containing [B5O10] groups known to date. Theoretical calculations and structural analyses reveal that the impressive SHG activities primarily stem from the [B5O10] groups and [ScO6] polyhedra. These findings suggest promising potential for KBSBO and RSSBO crystals as beryllium-free deep UV NLO materials.

Discovery of a new bimetallic borate with strong optical anisotropy activated by π-conjugated [B2O5] units

Birefringent materials with high optical anisotropy have been identified as a research hotspot owing to their significant scientific and technological significance in modern optoelectronics for manipulating light polarization. Researchers studying borate systems have discovered that adding π-conjugated units placed in parallel can significantly increase the birefringence of crystalline solids; some examples include [BO3] units, [B2O5] units, and [B3O6] units. However, there are not many borates with strictly parallel configurations of π-conjugated [B2O5] units. In this study, a new bimetallic borate Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3 with near-parallel arrangement of π-conjugated [B2O5] units was discovered. Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3 possesses the maximum number density of [B2O5] units, shortest dihedral angle of [B2O5] units (between the two [BO3]), and largest degree of [CdO6] octahedral distortion among all the currently known Sr-Cd-B-O tetragonal system borates, making it demonstrate a large birefringence of 0.102 at 532 nm. Theoretical analysis proves that π-conjugated [B2O5] anions are the primary source of the large birefringence of Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3.

Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O (X = NO3, Cl, Br): Exploring High-Performance UV Birefringent Crystals Induced by Coplanar π-Conjugated CO3 and NO3 Groups

Planar π-conjugated groups, like CO3, NO3, and BO3 triangles, are ideal functional units for designing birefringent materials due to their large optical anisotropy and wide band gap. The key point for designing birefringent crystals is to select appropriate functional building blocks (FBBs) and the proper arrangement mode. It is well known that the substitution strategy has proven to be a promising and accessible approach. In this work, alkali metals were chosen to regulate and control two different π-conjugated groups, CO3 and NO3, to build new compounds with large birefringence. Subsequently, three new compounds, Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O (X = NO3, Cl, Br), were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The aliovalent substitution between the [NO3]- anionic group and halogen anions [Cl]-/[Br]- has been achieved in these compounds. Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O feature the well-coplanar CO3 and NO3 groups in their crystal structure. This coplanar arrangement mode may effectively enhance the anisotropic polarizability of Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O. And their experimental birefringence can reach 0.094-0.131 at 546 nm. Diffuse reflectance spectra demonstrate that these compounds exhibit short ultraviolet (UV) absorption edges of ∼235 nm. Meanwhile, Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O also have an easily grown capacity under facile conditions. This work not only reports three new potential UV birefringent crystals but also provides a strategy to make the π-conjugated MO3 group coplanar.

Hydrogen bonding bolstered head-to-tail ligation of functional chromophores in a 0D SbF3·glycine adduct for a short-wave ultraviolet nonlinear optical material

The key properties of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials highly rely on the quality of functional chromophores (FCs) and their optimized interarrangement in the lattice. Despite the screening of various FCs, significant challenges persist in optimizing their arrangement within specific structures. Generally, FC alignment is achieved by designing negatively charged 2D layers or 3D frameworks, further regulated by templating cations. In this study, a novel 0D adduct NLO material, SbF3·glycine, is reported. Neutrally charged 0D [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs, comprising [SbF3] pyramids and zwitterionic glycine, are well-aligned in the structure. The alignment is facilitated by the hydrogen bonding, reinforcing a 'head-to-tail' ligation of [SbF3C2H5NO2] FCs. Consequently, the title compound exhibits favorable NLO properties, including a large second-harmonic generation efficiency (3.6 × KDP) and suitable birefringence (cal. 0.057 @ 1064 nm). Additionally, its short absorption cut-off edge (231 nm) positions it as a promising short-wave ultraviolet NLO material. Importantly, the binary SbF3-amino acid system is expected to serve as a new resource for exploring ultraviolet NLO crystals, owing to the abundance of the amino acid family.

Multifunctional Chiral d10-Metal Coordination Polymers: Tunable Photoluminescence and Efficient Second-Harmonic Generation with Circular Dichroic Response

A series of homochiral coordination polymers (HCPs), [M2(SIAP)2(bpy)2] [M(S)] and [M2(RIAP)2(bpy)2] [M(R)] (M = Zn or Cd, SIAP or RIAP = (S,S)- or (R,R)- 2,2'-(isophthaloylbis(azanediyl))di-propionic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), is successfully synthesized through solvothermal reactions, self-assembling d10 metal cations, chiral dicarboxylic ligands, and π-conjugated bipyridyl ligands. The HCPs crystallize in the extremely rare triclinic chiral space group, P1, and present 3D framework structures attributed to the strong intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking. Due to the unique crystal structures, the title compounds reveal efficient photoluminescence emission across a broad visible range, with significant brightness and color tuning by varying the excitation wavelength. Moreover, they exhibit efficient phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) with very high laser-induced damage thresholds, essential for high-power nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Intriguingly, the title compounds exhibit a measurable contrast in the SHG response under right- and left-handed circularly polarized excitation, thereby providing a unique case of SHG circular dichroism from the chiral centers of SIAP2- or RIAP2- ligand packed in the noncentrosymmetric environment. These exceptional attributes position these HCPs as promising candidates for multifunctional materials, with potential applications ranging from NLO devices to tailored luminescent systems with polarization control.

Polysubstitution Induced Centrosymmetric-to-Noncentrosymmetric Structural Transformation and Nonlinear-Optical Behavior: The Case of Na0.45Ag0.55Ga3Se5

Obtaining compounds with large nonlinear-optical (NLO) coefficients and wide band gaps is challenging due to their competitive requirements for chemical bonds. Herein, the first member with mixed cations on the A site in the A-M3-Q5 or A-Ag-M6-Q10 (A = alkali metal; M = Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te) family, viz. Na0.45Ag0.55Ga3Se5 (NAGSe), was obtained by a solid-state reaction. Its structure features [GaSe4] tetrahedra built three-dimensional {[Ga3Se5]-}∞ network, with Na and Na/Ag cations located at the octahedral cavities. Noncentrosymmetric (R32) NAGSe can also be transformed from centrosymmetric RbGa3S5 (P21/c) via multiple-site cosubstitution. NAGSe exhibits the highest NLO response (1.9 × AGS) in the A-Ag-M-Q family. Crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations suggest that the NLO response is mainly contributed by the regularly arranged [GaSe4] units. This work enriches the exploration of the undeveloped A-M3-Q5 or A-Ag-M6-Q10 family as potential infrared NLO materials.

AIB3 IIC2 IIIQ6 VIXVII: A Thioborate Halide Family for Developing Wide Bandgap Infrared Nonlinear Materials by Coupling Planar [BS3] and Polycations

Developing high-performance infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is urgent but challenging due to the competition between NLO coefficient and bandgap in one compound. Herein, by coupling NLO-active [BS3] planar units and halide-centered polycations, six new metal thioborate halides ABa3B2S6X (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br, I) composed of zero-dimensional [XBamRbn/Csn] polycations and [BS3] units, belonging to a newA I B 3 II C 2 III Q 6 VI X VII ${\mathrm{A}}^{\mathrm{I}}{\mathrm{B}}_{3}^{\mathrm{II}}{\mathrm{C}}_{2}^{\mathrm{III}}{\mathrm{Q}}_{6}^{\mathrm{VI}}{\mathrm{X}}^{\mathrm{VII}}$ family, are rationally designed and fabricated. The compounds show an interesting structural transition from Pbcn (ABa3B2S6Cl) to Cmc21 (ABa3B2S6Br and ABa3B2S6I) driven by the clamping effect of polycationic frameworks. ABa3B2S6Br and ABa3B2S6I are the first series metal thioborate halide IR NLO materials, and the introduction of [BS3] unit effectively widens the bandgap of planar unit-constructed chalcogenides. ABa3B2S6Br and ABa3B2S6I, exhibiting wide bandgaps (3.55-3.60 eV), high laser-induced damage thresholds (≈ 6 × AgGaS2), and strong SHG effects (0.5-0.6 × AgGaS2) with phase-matching behaviors, are the promising IR NLO candidates for high-power laser applications. The results enrich the chemical and structural diversity of boron chemistry and give some insights into the design of new IR NLO materials with planar units.

AYSO4F2 (A = K, Rb): [YO4F4] Polyhedra Enhancement of Birefringence in Non-π-Conjugated Sulfate Systems

A mild hydrothermal method was employed to successfully synthesize two new sulfate fluorides, namely, AYSO4F2 (A = K, Rb). They are isomorphic, and both contain [YO4F4] polyhedra and [SO4] tetrahedra in the structure. Theoretical calculations and experimental tests show that AYSO4F2 (A = K, Rb) have large band gaps (7.79 and 7.82 eV) and moderate birefringence (0.015 and 0.02 @ 546.1 nm), with significantly enhanced birefringence and band gaps as compared to that of the single alkali metal sulfates A2SO4 (A = K, Rb). Furthermore, theoretical calculations show that [YO4F4] polyhedra are the main reason for the band gap and birefringence enhancement. This work contributes to the advancement of structural chemistry in the field of rare-earth sulfates, offering a novel approach for the design of sulfates characterized by large birefringence.

Secondary-Bond-Driven Construction of a Polar Material Exhibiting Strong Broad-Spectrum Second-Harmonic Generation and Large Birefringence

Considerable effort has been invested in the development of non-centrosymmetric (NCS) inorganic solids for ferroelectricity-, piezoelectricity- and, particularly, optical nonlinearity-related applications. While great progress has been made, a persistent problem is the difficulty in constructing NCS materials, which probably stems from non-directionality and unsaturation of the ionic bonds between metal counter-cations and covalent anionic modules. We report herein a secondary-bond-driven approach that circumvents the cancellation of dipole moments between adjacent anionic modules that has plagued second-harmonic generation (SHG) material design, and which thereby affords a polar structure with strong SHG properties. The resultant first NCS counter-cation-free iodate, VO2 (H2 O)(IO3 ) (VIO), a new class of iodate, crystallizes in a polar lattice with∞ 1 [ ${{}_{{\rm { \infty }}}{}^{{\rm { 1}}}{\rm { [}}}$ VO2 (H2 O)(IO3 )] zigzag chains connected by weak hydrogen bonds and intermolecular forces. VIO exhibits very large SHG responses (18 × KH2 PO4 @ 1200 nm, 1.5 × KTiOPO4 @ 2100 nm) and sufficient birefringence (0.184 @ 546 nm). Calculations and crystal structure analysis attribute the large SHG responses to consistent polarization orientations of the∞ 1 [ ${{}_{{\rm { \infty }}}{}^{{\rm { 1}}}{\rm { [}}}$ VO2 (H2 O)(IO3 )] chains controlled by secondary bonds. This study highlights the advantages of manipulating the secondary bonds in inorganic solids to control NCS structure and optical nonlinearity, affording a new perspective in the development of high-performance NLO materials.

Ba4B14O25: A Deep Ultraviolet Transparent Nonlinear Optical Crystal with Strong Second Harmonic Generation Response Achieved by a Boron-Rich Closed-Loop Strategy

Discovering new deep ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is the current research hotspot. However, how to perfectly integrate several stringent performances into a crystal is a great challenge because of the natural incompatibility among them, particularly wide band gap and large NLO coefficient. To tackle the challenge, a boron-rich closed-loop strategy is supposed, based on which a new barium borate, Ba4B14O25, is designed and synthesized successfully via the high-temperature solid-state melting method. It features a highly polymeric 3D geometry with the closed-loop anionic framework [B14O25]8- constructed by the fundamental building blocks [B14O33]24-. The high-density π-conjugated [BO3]3- groups and the fully closed-loop B-O-B connections make Ba4B14O25 possess excellent NLO properties, including short UV cutoff edge (<200 nm), large second harmonic generation response (3.0 × KDP) and phase-matching capability, being a promising DUV-transparent NLO candidate material. The work provides a creative design strategy for the exploration of DUV NLO crystals.

Guanidinium Vanadate [C(NH2)3]3VO4·2H2O Revealing Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation and Wide Band Gaps

A new guanidinium-templated vanadate, [C(NH2)3]3VO4·2H2O, has been synthesized in a phase-pure form. It crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric polar space group, Cc, and the crystal structure is built upon a framework of guanidinium, vanadate tetrahedra, and water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds. Notably, optical measurements reveal that the material exhibits an approximately 9.6-fold enhancement in second-harmonic generation efficiency compared to its phosphate analogue. The enhancement can be attributed to the increased geometrical distortion of the VO4 tetrahedra. Furthermore, we found that the coordination number of the central vanadium atom significantly affects the optical band gaps. Among various coordination numbers, the 4-coordinate VO4 tetrahedra are found to be more favorable for widening the optical band gap of materials compared to the 5- and 6-coordinate vanadium polyhedra, as demonstrated by this work.

Ultra-Broad-Band-Excitable Cu-Based Halide (C4H10N)4Cu4I8 with High Stability for LED Applications

Currently, organic-inorganic hybrid cuprous-based halides are receiving substantial attention for their eco-friendliness, distinctive structures, and outstanding photophysical properties. Nevertheless, most of the reported cuprous-based halides demand deep ultraviolet excitation with a narrow excitation range that can meet the commercial requirement. Herein, zero-dimensional (0D) cuprous-based halide (C4H10N)4Cu4I8 single crystals (SCs) were synthesized, with an ultrabroad band excitation ranging 260-450 nm and a greenish-yellow emission band peaking at 560 nm. Excitingly, (C4H10N)4Cu4I8 also features a large Stokes shift of 300 nm, a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 84.66%, and a long lifetime of 137 μs. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the relationship between structure and photophysical properties, and the photoluminescence performance of (C4H10N)4Cu4I8 originates from the electron interactions in [Cu2I4]2- clusters. Taking advantage of broad band excitation and excellent photoluminescent performances, a high luminescence characteristic UV-pumped light-emitting diode (LED) device with remarkable color stability was fabricated by employing the as-synthesized (C4H10N)4Cu4I8 SCs, which present the promising applications of low-dimensional cuprous-based halides in solid-state lighting.

Chiral and Polar Duality Design of Heteroanionic Compounds: Sr18 Ge9 O5 S31 Based on [Sr3 OGeS3 ]2+ and [Sr3 SGeS3 ]2+ Groups

Chirality and polarity are the two most important and representative symmetry-dependent properties. For polar structures, all the twofold axes perpendicular to the principal axis of symmetry should be removed. For chiral structures, all the mirror-related symmetries and inversion axes should be removed. Especially for duality (polarity and chirality), all of the above symmetries should be broken and that also represents the highest-level challenge. Herein, a new symmetry-breaking strategy that employs heteroanionic groups to construct hourglass-like [Sr3 OGeS3 ]2+ and [Sr3 SGeS3 ]2+ groups to design and synthesize a new oxychalcogenide Sr18 Ge9 O5 S31 with chiral-polar duality is proposed. The presence of two enantiomers of Sr18 Ge9 O5 S31 is confirmed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Its optical activity and ferroelectricity are also studied by solid-state circular dichroism spectroscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy, respectively. Further property measurements show that Sr18 Ge9 O5 S31 possesses excellent nonlinear optical properties, including the strong second harmonic generation efficiency (≈2.5 × AGS), large bandgap (3.61 eV), and wide mid-infrared transparent region (≈15.3 µm). These indicate that the unique microstructure groups of heteroanionic materials are conducive to realizing symmetry-breaking and are able to provide some inspiration for exploring the chiral-polar duality materials.

One-Dimensional and Two-Dimensional Zn(II) Coordination Polymers with Ditopic Imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine: A Structural and Computational Study

Zn(II) coordination polymers are being increasingly studied for their stability and properties. Similarly, there is a growing interest in imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives, which show great potential in luminescence and pharmaceutical applications. In this work, we successfully synthesized and crystallized three new coordination polymers, using Zn(II) as the metallic node, dicarboxylic acids of different length and nature as linkers, and a linear ditopic imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivative, to explore the role of this molecule as a propagator of the dimensionality of the structure or as an ancillary ligand. Our work demonstrates the structural capability of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines in an unexplored domain for this family of ligands. Notably, we observed a pronounced ability of this heterocyclic scaffold to establish π···π interactions in the solid state. The supramolecular π-stacked assemblies were theoretically analyzed using DFT calculations based on model structures.

Novel antimony phosphates with enlarged birefringence induced by lone pair cations

Phosphates, whose obvious disadvantage is the relatively small birefringence, can be overcome by the introduction of post-transition metal cations containing stereochemically active lone-pair electrons. In this paper, two new compounds were successfully explored in the A-Sb-P-O system, i.e. Cs2Sb3O(PO4)3 (CsSbPO) and (NH4)2Sb4O2(H2O)(PO4)2[PO3(OH)]2 (NH4SbPOH). Transmission spectra show that CsSbPO has a surprising transmission range with a UV cutoff edge of 213 nm. First-principles calculations show that both compounds have a wide band gap (5.02 eV for CsSbPO and 5.30 eV for NH4SbPOH) and enlarged birefringence (Δn = 0.034@1064 nm for CsSbPO and Δn = 0.045@1064 nm for NH4SbPOH). The results of real-space atom-cutting investigations show that the distorted [SbOx] polyhedra originating from the asymmetric lone pair electrons give the main contribution to the total birefringence and overcome the disadvantage of small birefringence of phosphates but maintain wide transition windows.

From NaGa(IO3)3F to NaGa(IO3)2F2 and NaGa(IO3)4: The Effects of Chemical Substitution between F- Anions and IO3- Groups on the Structures and Properties of Gallium Iodates

Introducing F- anions or substituting F- anions with IO3- groups has been proven to be ideal strategies for designing novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar materials, yet systematic investigation into the effect of F- anions or the substitution of IO3- for F- anions on structures and properties remains rarely explored. Herein, two new gallium iodates, NaGa(IO3)2F2 (1) and NaGa(IO3)4 (2), were successfully designed and synthesized based on NaGa(IO3)3F by introducing more F- anions and replacing F- anions with IO3 groups, respectively. Structurally, in compound 1, the adjacent [GaF3(IO3)3]3- polyanions are connected in an antiparallel manner, resulting in a complete cancellation of local polarity. While in compound 2, all IO3 groups in 2D [Ga(IO3)4]∞- layers are aligned, leading to large macroscopic polarization. Additionally, chemical substitution also results in a qualitative improvement in the functional properties of compound 2. It possesses strong SHG response (12 × KDP @1064 nm) and broad optical transparency, coupled with large birefringence (0.21 @1064 nm), showcasing its promise as a promising nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal. The effects of chemical substitution between F- anions and IO3- groups on the structures and properties are discussed in detail.

Temperature-Induced Reversible Photoluminescence Switching and Ultraviolet-Pumped Light-Emitting Diode Applications of a Perovskite (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O Crystal

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid halides present many fascinating photophysical properties for promising optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray imaging, photodetectors, and anticounterfeiting. Herein, a centimeter-sized single crystal (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O with a 0D perovskite structure was obtained via a solvent evaporation method. A bright red emission at 618 nm with a larger Stokes shift of more than 300 nm and a long fluorescence lifetime of 6.21 ms were measured. Notably, a reversible PL switching from red emission to nonluminescence has been presented in the cycles of heating-cooling processes from RT to 100 °C. Furthermore, the temperature-induced luminescence shows a quick recovery after 20 conversion cycles, exhibiting excellent stability and temperature sensing. According to the structural and theoretical analyses, the temperature-induced luminescence is primarily due to hydrogen-bonding interactions between (MnCl6)4- and H2O molecules. Particularly, a temperature anticounterfeiting application has been designed based on its reversible temperature-dependent PL switching. Importantly, the ultraviolet-pumped LEDs fabricated by (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O single crystals are perfectly achieved. Anyway, this work clearly demonstrates that 0D Mn-based perovskite with temperature-dependent PL switching greatly extends its potential applications in electro-optical display, temperature sensing, and anticounterfeiting devices.

K(NH4)Zn2(PO4)2: a Beryllium-Free Sr2Be2B2O7 Derivative with Enhanced Interlayer Connectivity

A novel zinc phosphate derivative of Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO), K(NH4)Zn2(PO4)2 (KNZP), featuring [Zn2P2O8]∞2- double layers akin to the [Be2B2O7]∞4- layers in SBBO, was successfully synthesized via a moderate hydrothermal method. Through the substitution of BeO4 and BO3 with ZnO4 and PO4, the issue of toxicity has been effectively resolved, while the enhanced interlayer interactions facilitated by covalent and hydrogen bonding in KNZP overcome the inherent structural instability. Notably, KNZP exhibits a wide transparent window and a moderate second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, reaching 0.7 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), rendering it type-I phase-matchable, indicating that it is a promising UV nonlinear optical (NLO) material.

PbTeB4O9: a lead tellurium borate with unprecedented fundamental building block [B4O10] and large birefringence

Herein, the first lead tellurium borate, PbTeB4O9, with an unprecedented fundamental building block [B4O10] was successfully synthesized. The near-parallel alignment of [B4O10] groups and [TeO3] polyhedra resulted in a high birefringence (0.099@1064 nm). The structure-property relationship was discussed by using the first-principles calculations.

A Non-π-Conjugated Molecular Crystal with Balanced Second-Harmonic Generation, Bandgap, and Birefringence

Traditional nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are exclusively limited to ionic crystals with π-conjugated groups and it is a great challenge to achieve a subtle balance between second-harmonic generation, bandgap, and birefringence for them, especially in the deep-UV spectrum region (Eg  > 6.20 eV). Herein, a non-π-conjugated molecular crystal, NH3 BH3 , which realizes such balance with a large second-harmonic generation response (2.0 × KH2 PO4 at 1064 nm, and 0.45 × β-BaB2 O4 at 532 nm), deep-UV transparency (Eg > 6.53 eV), and moderate birefringence (Δn = 0.056@550 nm) is reported. As a result, NH3 BH3 exhibits a large quality factor of 0.32, which is evidently larger than those of non-π-conjugated sulfate and phosphate ionic crystals. Using an unpolished NH3 BH3 crystal, effective second-harmonic generation outputs are observed at different wavelengths. These attributes indicate that NH3 BH3 is a promising candidate for deep-UV NLO applications. This work opens up a new door for developing high-performance deep-UV NLO crystals.

LiGa(IO3 )4 : An Excellent NLO Material with Unprecedented 2D [Ga(IO3 )4 ]∞ - Layer Synthesized by Aliovalent Substitution

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the solid-state lasers for their ability to expand wavelength spectral to the regions where the directing lasing is difficult or even impossible, yet the rational design of a high-performance NLO crystal remains a great challenge owing to the severe structural and properties' requirements. Herein, a new noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar gallium iodate, LiGa(IO3 )4 , with a novel 2D anionic layer, is successfully designed and synthesized by the aliovalent substitution strategy based on classic α-LiIO3 . The 2D [Ga(IO3 )4 ]∞ - layer in LiGa(IO3 )4 is built from the GaO6 octahedra and highly polarizable units IO3 . Compared with its parent compound, the partial replacement of A-site Li+ cation with main group Ga3+ cation facilitates LiGa(IO3 )4 to possess excellent NLO properties, including the large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (14 × KH2 PO4 (KDP) @ 1064 nm), wide bandgap (4.25 eV), large birefringence (0.23 @ 1064 nm), and wide optical transparency from UV to mid-IR. These reveal that LiGa(IO3 )4 will be a promising NLO crystal.

Hydroxyl-Driven Enhanced Birefringence in Borophosphates

Borophosphates have become promising candidates for ultraviolet or deep-ultraviolet functional crystals. Through high-temperature solution method, four new borophosphates, K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH), were acquired successfully. Single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group, while P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) belongs to the centrosymmetric compound. It is worth mentioning that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) present the new fundamental building blocks [B2P2O11], [BP2O10H], and [BP2O9(OH)], respectively, as far as we know. Compared with K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) exhibit a larger optical anisotropy, further confirming the positive effect of hydroxyl groups on birefringence. UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra display that K2B2P2O9 and (NH4)2BP2O7(OH) have short UV cutoff edges. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations were conducted to comprehend their optical properties and electronic structures.

Ba3(BS3)(PS4): the first alkaline-earth metal thioborate-thiophosphate with strong optical anisotropy originating from planar [BS3] units

The first alkaline-earth metal thioborate-thiophosphate Ba3(BS3)(PS4) was designed from Ba3(BO3)(PO4) by S-O substitution and fabricated experimentally. The [BS3] pseudo-layers formed in the structure contribute to the strong optical anisotropy and a large birefringence of ∼0.11 at 1064 nm. The results enrich the structural and chemical diversity of chalcogenides.

Breaking the Inherent Interarrangement of [B3O6] Clusters for Nonlinear Optics with Orbital Hybridization Enhancement

The [B3O6] group as a prime functional unit provides borates with intrinsic properties that are modified by coordination to cations. Inherent [B3O6] cluster structures in borates exclusively made of them have a near-plane configuration, with more than 90% of them having a maximum dihedral angle of zero and the remaining ones being less than 13°. Although such an inherent configuration can produce considerable birefringence for good phase-matching ability, this is not conducive to obtaining high conversion efficiency and beam quality due to the walk-off effects in the nonlinear optical process. In this article, two new borate halides Ca2B3O6X (X = Cl and Br) were reported, in which the confinement effects of distorted halogen-centered secondary building blocks compress the existence space of [B3O6] primitives, resulting in the nonparallel arrangement between [B3O6] clusters in this series. Both compounds show large second harmonic generation effects, and more importantly, the broken inherent interarrangement of [B3O6] clusters makes them a moderate birefringence and small walk-off angle. Their moderate birefringence is due to the large angular alignment between [B3O6] clusters, resulting from the orbital hybridization between the Ca s and the O p orbitals of the terminal O atoms on [B3O6] clusters. Our model supports this viewpoint and offers guidelines for rearranging [B3O6] clusters' arrangements in borates.

Tailored Synthesis of Two Metal Borates KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) Exhibiting Wide Ultraviolet Transparency

Borate materials continue to command considerable attention due to their remarkable capacity for applications in deep ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Herein, two new metal borates KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) were extracted via the application of flux techniques. These two crystals adopt a centrosymmetric space group P21/c (no. 14), showcasing a layered structural configuration composed of isolated [BO3] plane triangles and [AlO4]/[GaO4] tetrahedra. Thermal analysis revealed that KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) exhibits an incongruent nature and possesses good thermal stability up to 1083 and 983 °C, respectively. Notably, these compounds display a short UV-transmission cutoff edge, approximately around 194 and 200 nm, accompanied by band gaps of 5.47 and 4.83 eV, respectively. Furthermore, KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) demonstrates a moderate optical birefringence of 0.026 and 0.025, respectively. Additionally, first-principles calculations were employed to shed light on the intricate interplay between the structure and properties of these compounds.

Cs4 Zn5 P6 S18 I2 : the Largest Birefringence in Chalcohalide Achieved by Highly Polarizable Nonlinear Optical Functional Motifs

Chalcohalides not only keep the balance between the nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficient and wide band gap, but also provide a promising solution to achieve sufficient birefringence for phase-matching ability in NLO crystals. In this study, a novel chalcohalide, Cs4 Zn5 P6 S18 I2 (1) is successfully synthesized, by incorporating the highly electropositive Cs and the large electronegative I element into the zinc thiophosphate. Its 3D open framework features an edge-shared by distorted [ZnS4 ], ethanol-like [P2 S6 ], and unusual [ZnS2 I2 ] polyhedrons, which is inconsistent with the soft-hard-acids-bases theory. Remarkably, compound 1 simultaneously exhibits the large second-harmonic generation (SHG, 1.1×AgGaS2 , @1.3 µm) and a wide band gap (3.75 eV) toward a high laser-induced damage threshold (16.7×AgGaS2 , @1.06 µm), satisfying the rigorous requirements for a prominent infrared NLO material with concurrent SHG intensity (≥0.5×AGS) and band gap (≥3.5 eV). Moreover, to the best of the knowledge, the experimental result shows that phase 1 has the largest birefringence (0.108, @546 nm) in chalcohalide and meets phase-matching behavior demand originating from the polarizable anisotropy of NLO-functional motifs. This finding may provide great opportunities for designing birefringent chalcohalides.

KRb2(NO3)2Cl: a new birefringent crystal exhibiting a perovskite-related framework and a short cutoff edge

The combination of π-conjugated groups [NO3] and Cl-centered polyhedra generates a new birefringent crystal with a perovskite-related framework, KRb2(NO3)2Cl, which is the first alkali metal nitrate chloride synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group pbam (no. 55). In addition, KRb2(NO3)2Cl crystals with dimensions up to 7 × 1.5 × 1 mm3 were grown. Notably, KRb2(NO3)2Cl has a short UV cut-off edge (below 228 nm) and a significantly enhanced birefringence (Δn = 0.084 at 1064 nm). Theoretical calculations indicate that the birefringence enhancement mainly derives from π-conjugated [NO3] plane triangles.

K5[B3O3F4(OH)]2(NO3): the first hydroxyfluorooxoborate-nitrate with a short ultraviolet cutoff edge and large birefringence

The first hydroxyfluorooxoborate-nitrate mixed anion compound, K5[B3O3F4(OH)]2(NO3), was synthesized by the solution evaporation method. It displays a unique structure built by K+ cations, the hydroxylated and fluorinated six-membered ring [B3O3F4(OH)] and [NO3] groups. It possesses a band gap of 5.68 eV derived from the diffuse reflectance spectrum, which corresponds to an ultraviolet cutoff edge of 218 nm. First-principles calculations show that it has a large birefringence of 0.095 at 532 nm and the result of the response electron distribution anisotropy method indicates that all three anion groups contribute positively to the birefringence, verifying the synergic contributions from the multiple anion groups.

Heterologous Isomorphic Substitution Induces Optical Property Enhancement for Deep-UV Crystals: a Case in Rb[B3O3F2(OH)2]

Optical anisotropy is pivotal for optical crystals, and it can be characterized by the maximum algebraic difference in refractive indices. Improving the optical anisotropy, especially for deep-ultraviolet (UV) crystals, is still a challenge and of interest. Herein, a new hydroxyfluorooxoborate, Rb[B3O3F2(OH)2], was obtained by the heterologous isomorphic substitution strategy. Dual enhancement for the band gap and birefringence compared with the parent A[B3O3F2(OH)2] (A = [Ph4P]/[Ph3MeP]) compounds was achieved in Rb[B3O3F2(OH)2]. This considerable enhancement originates from the removal of organic components and the retention of a birefringence-active anionic framework. This enhancement pushes the application region from UV to deep-UV. This discovery not only expands the structural chemistry of borates but also demonstrates the viability of heterologous isomorphic substitution to design deep-UV crystals with enhanced optical property.

Cd2 Nb2 Te4 O15 : A Novel Pseudo-Aurivillius-Type Tellurite with Unprecedented Nonlinear Optical Properties and Excellent Stability

Oxides are emerging candidates for mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, their intrinsically weak second harmonic generation (SHG) effects hinder their further development. A major design challenge is to increase the nonlinear coefficient while maintaining the broad mid-IR transmission and high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the oxides. In this study, it is reported on a polar NLO tellurite, Cd2 Nb2 Te4 O15 (CNTO), featuring a pseudo-Aurivillius-type perovskite layered structure composed of three types of NLO active groups, including CdO6 octahedra, NbO6 octahedra, and TeO4 seesaws. The uniform orientation of the distorted units induces a giant SHG response that is ≈31 times larger than that of KH2 PO4 , the largest value among all reported metal tellurites. Additionally, CNTO exhibits a large band gap (3.75 eV), a wide optical transparency window (0.33-14.5 µm), superior birefringence (0.12@ 546 nm), high LIDT (23 × AgGaS2 ), and strong acid and alkali resistance, indicating its potential as a promising mid-IR NLO material.

Stereochemically Active Tin(II)-Induced Enhancement of Birefringence in SnII SnIV (PO4 )2 and SrSn(PO4 )PO2 (OH)2

Two new tin(II) phosphates, SnII SnIV (PO4 )2 and SrSn(PO4 )PO2 (OH)2 , were synthesized by the high-temperature solution method and hydrothermal method, respectively. Theoretical study indicates that by introducing tin(II) with stereochemical activity lone pairs (SCALP) in metal phosphates, the birefringence was enhanced, 0.048@1064 nm for SnII SnIV (PO4 )2 and 0.080@1064 nm for SrSn(PO4 )PO2 (OH)2 .

Target-Oriented Synthesis of Borate Derivatives Featuring Isolated [B3O3] Six-Membered Rings as Structural Features

Borates provide an excellent platform for investigating the optical nonlinearity and linearity of crystals as photoelectric functional materials. In our work, borate derivatives with isolated [B₃O₃] six-membered rings as structural features are the preferred system due to their simple functional units and excellent properties. Herein, by utilizing the target-oriented synthesis, a series of borate derivatives, A₂[B₃O₃F₄(OH)] (A= NH₄, Rb, Cs) (ABOFH), K_2.3Cs_0.7B₃O₃F₆ (KCsBOF), and Cs₃[B₃O₃(OH)₃]Cl₃ (CsBOHCl), with novel heteroanionic groups containing [BO_xF_4-x] (x = 0-3) and/or [BO₂(OH)] units were obtained. ABOFH, KCsBOF, and CsBOHCl construct different two-dimensional pesudolayers featuring [B₃O₃F₄(OH)], [B₃O₃F₆], and [B₃O₃(OH)₃] units, respectively. Also, the optical properties and the arrangement information of these anionic groups were studied. Among the total five compounds, (NH₄)₂[B₃O₃F₄(OH)] and Cs₃[B₃O₃(OH)₃]Cl₃ with enlarged birefringence and sufficient band gaps were screened out as promising birefringent crystals due to the optimally aligned configuration of birefringence-active heteroanionic units. The successful results of target-oriented synthesis indicate a more profound conclusion that the borate system now has more diversified structural chemistry, and an effective strategy was proposed to modify the arrangement and species of anionic units to optimize the performance of optical crystals.

Controlling the Nonlinear Optical Behavior and Structural Transformation with A-Site Cation in α-AZnPO4 (A = Li, K)

Regulating the crystal structure by A-site cation substitution is one of the effective methods to explore high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, two non-centrosymmetric (NCS) compounds, α-MZnPO₄ (M = Li, K) with short UV absorption edges 221 and 225 nm, are obtained by performing A-site cation substitution method. It is noteworthy that α-LiZnPO₄ (α-LZPO) achieves >10 times second harmonic generation (SHG) response (2.3 × KDP) enhancement compared with that of α-KZnPO₄ (α-KZPO) (0.2 × KDP), which is the only case among phosphates with different A-site cations. By structural comparison, it is found that the A-site cations play important roles for anion rearrangements, and further the structure features of the two compounds by designing two suppositional crystal models as well as performing other theoretical calculations are analyzed. The study confirms the feasibility to design promising NLO materials with strengthen SHG response and structural stability in orthophosphate system.

A Polar Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze with Colossal Second-Harmonic Generation

A polar tetragonal tungsten bronze, Pb_1.91 K_3.22 □_0.85 Li_2.96 Nb₁₀ O₃₀ (□: vacancies), has been successfully synthesized by a high temperature solid-state reaction. Single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction indicate that the structure of Pb_1.91 K_3.22 □_0.85 Li_2.96 Nb₁₀ O₃₀ crystallizing in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group, P4bm, consists of 3D framework with highly distorted NbO₆ , LiO₉ , PbO₁₂ , and (Pb/K)O₁₅ polyhedra. While NCS Pb_1.91 K_3.22 □_0.85 Li_2.96 Nb₁₀ O₃₀ undergoes a reversible phase transition between polar (P4bm) and nonpolar (P4/mbm) structure at around 460 °C, the material decomposes to centrosymmetric Pb_1.45 K_3.56 Li_3.54 Nb₁₀ O₃₀ (P4/mbm) once heated to 1200 °C. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements with 1064 nm radiation indicate that Pb_1.91 K_3.22 □_0.85 Li_2.96 Nb₁₀ O₃₀ exhibits a giant phase-matchable SHG intensity of ≈71.5 times that of KH₂ PO₄ , which is the strongest intensity in the visible range among all nonlinear optical materials reported to date. The observed colossal SHG should be attributable to the synergistic effect of dipole moments from the well-aligned NbO₆ octahedra, the constituting distortive channels with vacancies, and highly polarizable cations.

Na2BaB12O18F4: A Mixed Alkali/Alkaline-Earth Metal Fluorooxoborate with Two Unprecedented Interpenetrating Three-Dimensional B-O/F Anionic Networks and a Short Ultraviolet Cutoff Edge

Fluorooxoborates are promising yet largely untapped crystal materials for linear and nonlinear optical applications. The introduction of a strong electronegative F atom into an oxyboron anionic group offers a virtually unlimited chance for structural engineering and ultimately purposeful tuning of the macroscopic optical properties of the crystal. Herein, a new mixed alkali/alkaline-earth fluorooxoborate, Na₂BaB₁₂O₁₈F₄, was synthesized in a closed system. Na₂BaB₁₂O₁₈F₄ features a [B₆O₁₁F₂] fundamental building unit (FBB), which polymerizes into two new (first example) independent interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) B-O/F anionic networks constructed entirely from BO₃ and BO₃F units. Based on optical characterizations and the first-principles calculations, Na₂BaB₁₂O₁₈F₄ exhibits a moderate birefringence (0.054 @ 1064 nm) and a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (below 190 nm). The successful synthesis and characterization of Na₂BaB₁₂O₁₈F₄ may speed up the subsequent discovery of other mixed alkali/alkaline-earth metal fluorooxoborates.

LiCs3AlB7O14: achieving enhanced optical anisotropy via [AlO4] tetrahedron introduction to rearrange the anionic framework

Borate has become a hot topic because of its rich structural chemistry and excellent properties for functional materials fields. The rearrangement of π-conjugated B-O units is key to enhancing the optical anisotropy, but it remains a challenge. Herein, by introducing [AlO₄] tetrahedra, a new congruent melting aluminoborate LiCs₃AlB₇O₁₄ with [B₇O₁₄] clusters was discovered. This work confirms that the introduction of [AlO₄] tetrahedra can lead to the rearrangement of anionic framework of the borate system and thereby enhance the birefringence of LiCs₃AlB₇O₁₄. The birefringence is about 4.1 times higher than that of its congener Li₄Cs₃B₇O₁₄ with the same [B₇O₁₄] clusters. Similarly, the effects of [AlO₄] tetrahedra on the rearrangement of the B-O anionic framework are also demonstrated in other known borates.

A new polar alkaline earth-rare earth iodate: Ba2Ce(IO3)8(H2O)

A new alkaline earth-rare earth iodate, Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O), has been synthesised by a hydrothermal method and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) crystallises in the polar space group Pna2₁ (No. 33) with unit cell parameters of a = 15.5042(5) Å, b = 7.8841(3) Å, c = 19.5359(8) Å, V = 2388.00(15) ų, and Z = 4. The structure of Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) is characterised by zero-dimensional (0D) [Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O)]^4- units separated by Ba²⁺ cations. Large crystals of Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) with dimensions of a few millimetres have been grown. The UV-vis-NIR transmission spectroscopy measurements of the compound showed that it has a short wavelength absorption edge at 381 nm. Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) exhibits a relatively weak second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response, about 0.2 times that of KDP, which is mainly due to the fact that the polarisation effects of the IO₃ groups in the structure largely cancel each other out. The relationships between the structure and the physical properties of Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) have also been calculated theoretically. Ba₂Ce(IO₃)₈(H₂O) has a band gap of 2.44 eV, which is determined by the Ce-O and I-O interactions and is larger than those of many simple metal iodates. The introduction of alkaline earth metals favours an increase in band gap. Our work shows that the SHG and birefringence properties are closely related to the arrangement of the functional groups in the compounds.

Two Mixed-Alkali-Metal Selenates as Short-Wave Ultraviolet Nonlinear-Optical Materials

Two novel mixed-alkali-metal selenate nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals, Na₃Li(H₂O)₃(SeO₄)₂·3H₂O (I) and CsLi₃(H₂O)(SeO₄)₂ (II), have been successfully synthesized by an aqueous solution evaporation method. Both compounds feature the unique layers constructed of the same functional moieties including SeO₄ and LiO₄ tetrahedra: [Li(H₂O)₃(SeO₄)₂·3H₂O]_∞^3- layers in I and [Li₃(H₂O)(SeO₄)₂]_∞^- layers in II. The titled compounds display wide optical band gaps of 5.62 and 5.66 eV, respectively, according to the UV-vis spectra. Interestingly, they exhibit significantly different second-order nonlinear coefficients (0.34 × KDP and 0.70 × KDP, respectively). Detailed dipole moment calculations manifest that the large disparity can be attributed to the difference in the dipole moment of the crystallographically independent SeO₄ and LiO₄ groups. This work confirms that alkali-metal selenate system is an excellent candidate for short-wave ultraviolet NLO materials.

Li3B8O13X (X = Cl and Br): Two New Noncentrosymmetric Crystals with Large Birefringence Induced by BO3 Units

Enthusiasm for the exploration of nonlinear alkali metal borates remains high. Focusing on the Li-B-O-X (X = Cl and Br) system, two examples of noncentrosymmetric borates, Li₃B₈O₁₃Cl and Li₃B₈O₁₃Br, were obtained using a high-temperature solution method under vacuum conditions. Structurally, the Li₃B₈O₁₃X crystals exhibit two independent alternately arranged three-dimensional B-O network structures formed by the basic building block unit B₈O₁₆. The performance measurements demonstrate their short ultraviolet cutoff edges. The theoretical calculation indicates that the BO₃ units dominate the contribution to their large optical anisotropy with the birefringence, 0.094 and 0.088@1064 nm for Li₃B₈O₁₃Cl and Li₃B₈O₁₃Br, respectively.

Cs[B3O3F2(OH)2]: discovery of a hydroxyfluorooxoborate guided by selective organic-inorganic transformation

Selective transformation between organic and inorganic systems is crucial but still remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrated that selective organic-inorganic transformation is a simple but effective strategy to find new hydroxyfluorooxoborates. By replacing the [Ph₄P]/[Ph₃MeP] organic cations with Cs atoms, a new hydroxyfluorooxoborate Cs[B₃O₃F₂(OH)₂] with three-membered [B₃O₃F₂(OH)₂] clusters was synthesized. Theoretical analysis confirmed the effects of different components in the lattice of reported structure on the optical properties.

Organic Kainate Single Crystals for Second-Harmonic and Broadband THz Generation

Organic crystals with unique nonlinear optical properties have been attracting attention owing to their capability to outperform their conventional nonorganic counterparts. Since nonlinear material responses are linked to a crystal's internal microscopic structure, molecular engineering of maximally unharmonic quantum potentials can boost macromolecular susceptibilities. Here, large-scale kainic acid (kainate) single crystals were synthesized, and their linear and nonlinear optical properties were studied in a broad spectral range, spanning the visible to THz spectral regions. The non-centrosymmetric zwitterionic crystallization, molecular structure, and intermolecular arrangement were found to act as additive donor-acceptor domains, enhancing the efficiency of the intrinsic second-order optical nonlinearity of this pure enantiomeric crystal. Molecular simulations and experimental analysis were performed to retrieve the crystals' properties. The crystals were predicted and found to have good transparency in a broad spectral range from the UV to the infrared (0.2-20 μm). Second-harmonic generation was measured for ultrashort pumping wavelengths between 800 and 2400 nm, showing an enhanced response around 600 nm. Broadband THz generation was demonstrated with a detection limited bandwidth of >8 THz along with emission efficiencies comparable to and prevailing those of commercial ZnTe crystals. The broadband nonlinear response and high transparency make kainate crystals extremely attractive for realizing a range of nonlinear optical devices.

Noncentrosymmetric versus Centrosymmetric: Halogen Induced Variable Coordination Modes of Sn2+ and Structural Transition in Sn3B3O7X (X = Cl and Br)

Two new borate halides, Sn₃B₃O₇X (X = Cl and Br), were successfully synthesized via introducing Sn²⁺ with lone-pair and halogen into borate. Interestingly, halogen-induced variable coordination modes of Sn²⁺ and anion frameworks make them crystallize in different space groups, from noncentrosymmetric (Pna2₁) to centrosymmetric (Pbca). Sn₃B₃O₇Cl possesses an SHG response of about 0.5 times that of KDP, while Sn₃B₃O₇Br exhibits a large birefringence (0.123@1064 nm). The theoretical calculations were performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships.

BaB2P2O8F2: A Fluoroborophosphate with [B2P2O8F2]∞ Layers and Deep-Ultraviolet Cutoff Edge

A fluoroborophosphate, BaB₂P₂O₈F₂, was successfully obtained. Its structure contains a novel [B₂P₂O₈F₂]_∞ layer containing six-membered rings, which is formed by the fundamental building block composed of three types of non-π-conjugated groups, [PO₄], [BO₄], and [BO₂F₂]. BaB₂P₂O₈F₂ has a deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edge (λ < 200 nm) and a tiny birefringence (Δn = 0.007 at 532 nm), which originates from the constituent non-π-conjugated groups. The title compound enriches the versatility of the fluoroborophosphates, encouraging further research into DUV materials in fluoroborophosphate systems.

Discovery of SrZn2B6O12 with an unprecedented quadruple-layered configuration

A new borate, SrZn2B6O12, is found to show a quadruple-layered configuration. This rare quadruple-layer is stacked by two 2[Zn2B6O12]∞ double-layers that are constructed by two single-layers of 2[B4O7]∞ and 2[Zn2B2O4]∞.
